thanks for the kind words anon, always nice to feel like the time i've spent on here wasn't a complete waste. sorry it took a few days to respond to this, but i wanted to give a more in depth answer. i can throw out some recommendations for sure, i basically just went through my last.fm from the last year and added all the non hip hop / jazz stuff to a list. you didn't mention if you were into metal or hardcore at all and there's quite a bit of that on here, but if you're not interested in that let me know and i can suggest some other stuff. i'm not a genre expert or anything but i did my best to give a brief description, so maybe if you end up liking one of these artists it'd be easier to find something similar. also a good chance you might be familiar with some of the ones that are more hip hop adjacent. you can also click the name of the artist and it'll take you to an album i recommend on bandcamp or spotify. i'd also be down to do another one of these later if you want, you can even hit me up off anon if you want. i appreciate you and i hope you're doing well! peace.

I guess I should talk about what kind of guy I am... Well put into simple terms, I'm a guy who adores the wonders of graphic design, which is also my eventual goal of a job. Currently I'm taking my higher exam, so I can attend university next summer. Other than that I'm your average movie n' music enjoyer, but I will talk about that a bit later. Bleach. yeah. the anime. i’m trying hard to finish the og run so i can watch the new season that just started! i never got past the alternate zanpakutou tale arc, and stopped watching like ten years ago. but now i’m backkkk and loving it sm, all my babies are back at it bleeding and shouting ♥

sweet, spicy, or savory: okay like. does savory mean like potato chips? or like vinegar? or is it like ‘sweet and sour’ type of sour? is sour and savory the same thing? i’m having an absolute translation error here.

working on: Tinwater. i’m working on tinwater’s city layout/map, planning where to place which buildings, slowly building the city. i want the city to be in somewhat ready state when i move sims in. although, i can’t be too strict about this - i know i’ll be changing things even after my families are all settled in.

another major project at the moment is the new Ironwood build (that i’m calling Ironwood mostly because i’m feeling the og Ironwood story isn’t happening lol), that actually is a part of the Tinwater neighborhood. i’m a bit worried the castle won’t work out in the end, that i’m being too ambitious with it. but i’m having fun building it!

other than sims...... the autumn holidays are here in finland rn and i’m working almost all week. and since it’s a national holiday (mostly for kids and students), my work place has longer opening hours than we usually do. so i’m currently working on surviving this week ♥

it’s very very easy! if you are in a mcr-related discord server that has the last.fm bot on it, run the “WhoKnows artist” command for “Gerard Way” “Frank Iero” “Ray Toro” and “My Chemical Romance” and report back what the number of listeners, total plays, and avg plays are for each! you can also add any notable stats

for instance:

gee: 17 listeners, 4941 total plays, 290 avg plays

frank: 18 listeners, 5466 total plays, 303 avg plays

ray: 10 listeners, 554 total plays, 55 avg plays. top listener has 344 plays, 5 listeners have 5 or fewer plays each

mcr: 19 listeners, 31160 total plays, 1640 avg plays

those are all real numbers i just pulled, btw. if enough people do this i’ll put all the results into a spreadsheet to try and figure out some sort of trends from it

no. 08: David Vassalotti - Broken Rope (2016)

Over the years I've collected my own sources for discovering new music to listen to, but after a while everything starts to sound the same and I desire something not informed nor influenced by my own tastes or the comfort of what I usually gravitate towards. My favourite way to find something totally fresh is to visit someone I follow on last.fm and save their top 8 albums for the month. Broken Rope was one of those - and my favourite discovery through this method (the person I saved it from also makes really good experimental ambient music BTW).

Broken Rope is a solo effort from David Vassalotti, who is well known as part of Merchandise. I wasn't familiar with Merchandise before hearing this album and I'm happy this introduced me to David's impressive body of work! Broken Rope is a bold display of his talents as a musician and songwriter, and while the genre of this is hard to capture succinctly (industrial-lofi-experimental-art rock???) it's a cohesive and satisfying work that gives you something new on each listen.

you see the last.fm "similar artists" function doesn't really work that well...

first similar artist is Sleep, obviously i know Sleep already, i like Sleep bc i like everything Al Cisneros has done, but it's not similar at all

second is Electrix Wizard which is one of the biggest doom metal bands, defining the sound of the whole genre, and they're veeeery far from the thing OM are doing. i hate Electric Wizard ever since i saw them live btw. also it has nothing to do with the chanting sound OM has, it's just stereotypical doom metal

Weedeater i think has screaming, i don't like screaming vocals, and their name alone makes me cringe

Monolord is typical doom metal

i won't go on, but as you can see the "similar artists" are similar only because they play doom metal, not because they really have a similar sound.

i feel like it just lists the most popular artist in the genre :/
