just woke up so apologies if this isn’t coherent. i do feel like the nature of tumblr’s chronological feed and lack of posts from outside your space (blogs you follow and people they reblog from, basically) tends to make it harder to tell when parts of the fandom are acting up (which, to be clear, they always are; last night was not an isolated incident). but that means that when you are presented with an example of racism in the fandom, such as a particular instagram live only screenshotting the white members of the band and completely ignoring ray (arguably THE MOST interesting one to watch), you gotta call it out.
i did a little experiment a few shows back. two posts, same text save for a minor change. “frank iero. you agree.” and “ray toro. you agree.” any guesses as to which post got more reblogs within the first, oh, 15–20 minutes of its lifespan? if you said “the frank one” then you win absolutely nothing because that is the bare minimum for recognizing fandom racism.
(the “ray toro. you agree.” post is now at around 400 notes, thanks largely to the fact that i frequently rb it during shows instead of making a new post every time, and also because @sleepgerbs reblogged it 178 times on the first night of its existence… after i posted links in the discord and explicitly asked people to rb the ray post several times to make up for the disparity. yes i know that’s tampering with evidence but i honestly had enough data from the experiment already so.)
so actually ignore the point in my first paragraph, it’s different now, i’m leaving it there to show full transparency but actually mcrblr is complicit in this too, it’s just less obvious when your dash is still mostly full of people like @raytorosaurus and @dyketoro and @girlgerard and @mcrbois posting things like “ray toro high harmony <33333” and “slay toro” every time he does something onstage. but notice how that sort of post tends to be made by a much smaller group of people. notice who is silent, not because they aren’t watching the streams or aren’t liveblogging them, but because all their attention is on frank, gerard, and mikey. because they don’t see ray, who isn’t white, who doesn’t fit into the (racist) perception of “what mcr looks like” (guess what! mcr looks like ray toro, and that is a GOOD thing), as a core part of the band. which, to be clear, he is.
your racism is showing.

hey remember that frank interview.
if we were doing a nostalgia tour, [visually representing each album while playing songs from them] would make sense ... what i love so much about this is that it's not that ... and i wasn't sure ... when we started playing shows again ... gerard was really good about asking the crowd, like, "alright so how many of you have seen the band before" and it was ... a couple hundred hands ... you're dealing with, just, people that have just found out about the band naturally over the past you know eight years ... in doing that it's like, well this isn't— this isn't a nostalgia tour, so we're not gonna do that— we're not gonna, you know, do the costume of like "oh, remember us? i don't really fit in this anymore, but do you remember, i used to do that thing?" ... it's not that ... and i'm glad, man, i think that that would only be fun once, you know? ... now i think it's about, alright, let's— let's be the band, let's be the band again, let's be a band again and let's learn some of our songs ... let's learn the ones that we want to play

the way theyve been wearing so many dresses a) at festivals and b) in states with known transphobic legislation is so meaningful. im not coherent enough to explain why but it absolutely is.

thinking about how the verse in desert song is paralleled SO MUCH in foundations… like. it is uncanny.
“we hold in our hearts the sword and the faith” when viewed with “you must fix your heart” and “our hearts we’ll stay” and ESPECIALLY “against faith” like??? the idea that the heart contains the sword and the faith??? and that those themes have continued in each of them even while the band as a whole didn’t really embody them outwardly to the world???
“swelled up from the rain, clouds move like a wraith” versus “and you must build an altar where it swells / when the storm decays / and the sky it rains” HELLO??? pick up the fucking phone!!!
“well after all, we’ll lie another day” => “let our bodies lay” “and as the swarming calls we lay in the foundations of decay” no comment
“and through it all, we’ll find some other way” plus “against change (we wander through the ruins)” the whole idea of resisting needing to find an alternate path but doing it anyways hrnghrngh i have Thoughts
“to carry on through cartilage and flood” and the war themes “he dreams of all the battles won” “and as we stumble through your last crusade” and also “let it flood, let it flood” WHAT were they on
“and did you come to stare or wash away the blood” the first half of this vs the direct call to look “see the man who stands upon the hill” #character development. and ofc the second half like. “let our blood in vain” and “let it wash away” just. it’s all here.
the whole verse really parallels “get up coward” in that YES there are struggles YES there is still stuff that needs to be fixed but. you need to GET UP you need to TAKE ACTION to clean up the blood that was spilled. you need to watch and you need to accept that sometimes the roots will corrode and then you need to get up and fix your fucking heart.

ok danger days analysis. this starts with bulletproof heart because i was super feral about it and couldn’t wait until after look alive sunshine and nanana.
bulletproof heart. “too much talking with a laser blade” it isn’t about using violence as a form of diplomacy. it’s not that at all. it’s the opposite. there’s too much talking with weapons instead of words. insert that astronaut meme “it’s all anti-war?” “always has been”
sing. “sing it till you’re not / singing out for the ones that’ll hate your guts” well fuck okay. if that ain’t something that they sure as hell r living up to now.
planetary (go!). it’s saying, let’s fucking get out of here! “this is a letter / my word / is the beretta / the sound of my vendetta / against the ones that planned it”
the only hope for me is you. well. this is just. a letter to queer youth. it’s no accident that it’s right after planetary (go!) on the album. it starts with “remember me” and invoking imagery of nostalgia and shared history, then the fucking amazing lyrics “and if we can’t find where we belong / we’ll have to make it on our own / face all the pain and take it on / because the only hope for me / is you alone”
jet star and the cobra kid / traffic report. and then jet star and the cobra kid fucking die so. hello narrative foreshadowing
party poison. anygays this one is very interesting tbh it needs a whole analysis of its own. for this purpose tho it basically is the turning point in terms of like, no longer being able to safely play along with society even if you wanted to
save yourself, i’ll hold them back. the first fucking lyric: “right now, i hope you’re ready for a firefight / ’cause the devil’s got your number tonight / they say! we’re never leaving this place alive / but if you sing these words we’ll never die”
the “they” is evidently jet star and the kobra kid, which just. ough sobbing rn. but the interesting part is the first half, basically like, yeah this is about to boil over, i hope you’re ready.
“for all of us who’ve seen the light / salute the dead and lead the fight / hail hail! / who gives a damn if we lose the war? / let the walls come down / let the engines roar!” so these lyrics are linked ofc. “salute the dead” -> “hail hail!” and then “lead the fight” -> “who gives a damn if we lose the war? / let the walls come down / let the engines roar!”
so yknow. it’s about being okay with losing the war. as long as you lived life to the fullest. who cares what happens in the end as long as you live on the way to it?
“be a burning star if it takes all night” the night in the desert is when you’re safe from the sunlight that kills you. well you gotta leave your mark somehow! be a burning star, even though you gotta spend all that safe time getting there.
“i’ll tell you all how the story ends / where the good guys die and the bad guys win / who cares!” it doesn’t fucking matter what the ending is! we’re doomed to die but that doesn’t mean the story is lost! even if they win, that isn’t the point of the story. the outcome is irrelevant, what matters is the legacy you leave behind. the graffiti they write on your grave. i’ll hold them back so you can leave a mark on the world before we go. i can give you tonight, make it count, leave behind a memory of who you really were. be broken glass when the sun rises on the empty space we fled from.
s/c/a/r/e/c/r/o/w. now this song is talking to a child, coaxing them into shelter before the bomb hits, knowing that when society falls it’ll be devastating no matter how terrible that society was. of course s/c/a/r/e/c/r/o/w is like an actual BLI thing that is a very real threat in the zones and you have to hide from it, and they come out during the day in the sunlight, but you still gotta move yourself when that sunlight of BLI’s presence is gone, because if BLI dies then that means something worse is on its way. and not even love is enough to stop that from coming. no matter how strong or defiant or queer that love is, it won’t be enough. you have to run.
