Sorry in advance for how long this ask is. Botw was the first zelda game I played to completion, I played a tiny bit of twilight princess when I was younger purely because you could be a dog, the first dungeon of wind waker, and I have fond memories of both loving and sucking at skyward sword on the wii but ultimately I was just too young and easily distracted by games I was actually good at, and therefore less frustrated by, to have the attention span to beat a zelda game. I think I would have beat skyward sword if not for the motion controls being very frustrating.

Anyway, I played totk and then obsessively read your big zelda doc and basically every post you've ever made about zelda and now I'm insane. Thank you. I didn't have totk spoilers blacklisted at first because I assumed I wouldn't care because I never care about spoilers and then I saw your posts when you were finishing the dragon tears questline and it made me stop just running around doing sidequests and focus down the main quest like crazy.

I'm trying to decide whether to play skyward sword remastered or hrule warriors age of calamity (which I did very much enjoy the demo of) next and was wondering what you'd recommend. I did try to play ocarina of time on 3ds and I WILL go back to it once I stop being so mad at myself about dying in the first dungeon and also maybe give in to using a guide because I don't need to get a Good Grade in Zelda, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

HIII i'm so glad i could be your introduction to zelda lore!! the question of aoc vs sksw really depends on what exactly you're hoping to get out of your gameplay experience imo.

aoc has its. decent points. i will say this. but the 2 most important things to know about it going in are 1. IT IS NOT CANON and none of the events within it actually correspond to anything that happened pre-botw, and 2. its gameplay is NOT zelda gameplay, it's dynasty warriors gameplay. you've already played the demo so you have some understanding of the gameplay, but you should know that that's ALL there is to aoc, and if you don't enjoy hours upon hours of hack-and-slash large-group combat, you're not going to have a ton of fun playing aoc. there is technically a story tying aoc together, and it has its moments, but they're few and far between. mostly it just kind of sucks. if what you're looking for out of this is a well-written story similar to the experience of botw/totk, i would not recommend aoc.

the most important thing i'd tell you about sksw is that even thought this one IS canon, the gameplay is still gonna be noticeably different from botw/totk. sksw is much closer to the classic zelda formula than the games you're most familiar with, and is actually smaller and more linear than games like oot and wind waker. the gameplay is also almost entirely dungeon-based, and those dungeons are gonna be noticeably harder than the botw/totk ones. what sksw DOES really deliver on is story!! i'd say it's comparable to botw with the way in which the story is told and the subject matter it works with. like i said, it depends on what experience you're looking to get! personally i would go with sksw but. we all know how story-focused i am LMAO

#also PLEASEEEE play oot and PLAY IT WITH A WALKTHROUGH. THERE IS NO SHAME I PROMMY. I STILL CANT GET THROUGH THE WATER TEMPLE ORGANICALLY #AND IVE PLAYED THE GAME LIKE EIGHT TIMES #oot dungeons are good truly but they are also from 1998. back when video games didnt need to be intuitive. just google it i promise its ok #asks

1: Are you named after anyone?

I am! My middle name is from a family friend that passed shortly before I was born. I've considered going by it since I like it more than my first name, however 1: it gets butchered even worse than my first name, and 2: it's extremely close to the name of a character from a podcast that was super popular on here back in the day and I don't want people to think I named myself after that character lmao.

2: When was the last time you cried?

shgdlusfhjgdffgifdshsg literally at work this morning, one of my favorite patients was put down last night and then again after my coworker got a really fucked up call and made me listen to it

3: Do you have kids?

Absolutely not.

4: Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Absolutely, I have a very dry sense of humor and it usually takes people a bit to catch on to that lmao. Doesn't translate much online but any of y'all that have talked to me or heard me on voice chat know exactly what the fuck I'm talking about

5: What sports do you play/have you played?

I did dance and figure skating for a few years when I was a kid, then picked up horseback riding and did that for ...12ish years I think? I started when I was like 10 and stopped in my early 20's. I don't currently do people sports but I'm starting to get into dog sports

6: What's the first thing you notice about people?

General vibes, I'm pretty observant and pick up on body language very quickly.

7: Eye color?

Green, with central heterochromia so my eyes are light brown/hazel in the middle. I may have given one of my OCs the same eye color

8: Scary movies or happy endings?

100% scary movies

9: Any special talents?

I'm good at reading people and can usually figure out what issues are going to come from them immediately. Like I've had a few friends that I thought would be flaky or sketchy on first impression, and years down the line - guess who's now being super flaky or sketchy. I've picked up on a few different work relationships/affairs way before that dirt's come up, too. I'm also apparently very intimidating irl and play into that a ton so I get to be the scary dog friend or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays

Detroit

11: What are your hobbies?

Art, photography, crafting & cosplaying(this is probably like 8 different hobbies in one - I primarily do sewing, painting, sculpting, leatherwork, 3D printing + finishing 3D prints, vacuum forming and working with thermoplastics, etc etc), and basically anything involving animals - I'm really into dog training currently.

12: Do you have any pets?

My house is basically a zoo lmao. I'm apparently a stray collector or something because I keep either finding animals that don't get claimed or they get rehomed or surrendered to me. Here's a list of everyone:

Molly: ~10-12 year old seal APBT mix

Zelda: 5 year old black & white Great Dane

Lucy: 2 year old seal & white Siberian Husky & APBT mix

Obi: 8 year old black domestic longhair

14: Fave subject in school?

I really liked taking history classes, biology, & art. I also really liked the geology class I took way back, & I've had to take some various science-aligned classes for my program(example: art-based anatomy class focused on visible anatomy, how bodies move, range of motion for various joints and parts, etc) that were cool too.

15: Dream job?

I mean ideally I'd be getting paid to live in some rich guy's house and make whatever the hell kind of art I want, but that isn't a career path nowadays so I'll just say artist. I'm in school for game design and plan on going into concept art or character design, but who knows at this point.

hey i like your legend of zelda posting :) i wanna get into the franchise but don’t really know where to start, any pointers?

Oh boy, oh BOY!!! Well!! I'll try my best to give you some rough directions, both game and lore-wise!

If you're interested in getting into legend of zelda both for the games AND lore, I would suggest twilight princess, skyward sword, majoras mask, wind waker, and breath of the wild! These games give you an amazing overview of the kind of vibe that the universe goes for! Actually, now that I'm thinking about it I should probably recommend the classic to end all classics, ocarina of time lmao.

But seriously! All of the games I just mentioned gives a lovely intro to the legend of zelda universe and they're just distantly separated from each other that it's not overwhelming to play at all! Personal bias talking here, but I would suggest twilight princess and skyward sword as such lovely introductions lore wise :] if you like or are okay with more linear game progression, you should have tons of fun playing or watching!

And while tears of the kingdom is a very fun game, and if you wanna start there with the series then feel free! But personally, I feel like tears of the kingdom isn't the greatest introduction to loz lore despite how fantastic and well-made game it is. If anything else, I very much suggest you get into breath of the wild before tears of the kingdom as it'll make alot more stuff make sense and characters will already be familiar lmao.

I'll also give you some videos that I feel like give a nice introduction to the loz universe!

If you're curious about the wider loz universe and how its dark themes are carried through each illeration

This isn't really "lore", but it is a really nice series of videos that get you acquainted with the map of hyrule! Numerous locations show up through the series, so it can be nice to know wtf is being referenced lmao

But most importantly, you can start wherever you like and have fun! The loz timeline is messy, the games are a bit funky, there's way too much about this series that makes my brain spin, but I deeply love and cherish it.

If you have any other questions or want to ask about something more specific- feel free to ask whenever! I'll admit, the legend of zelda series is a bit overwhelming to get into cause there's so much lore and games, but once you get started it's all chill :] this series is just second nature to me cause I started on this shit when I was like, fucking five or something

oooo what can you tell us about ur ttrpg characters??

oh man tons, almost every single one of them I created based on a silly premise I thought would be funny and then eventually evolved into a genuine character that I'm now extremely invested in

There's Captain Widdershins, (which u may be able to tell by the name was a joke character I made for a oneshot that eventually evolved into a full campaign) who's a weathered 500 year old pirate captain with a missing arm and a golden eye who is completely off her rocker and took her warlock patronage to the goddess of the ocean as a marriage proposal. She's insane and very in love with her ocean wife and I adore her.

Caisson is a half mechanical half humanoid inventor who builds medical prosthetics and has a tiny pet dragon named Kip. Their parents were world-class weapons manufacturers and were secretly working on a doomsday device before being mysteriously killed. In an attempt to draw the assassins out into the open, Caisson announced the weapon development and claimed that they were the one who built it. This instead resulted in Caisson getting the attention of the king, who hires them as a weapons manufacturer (something they are not) for a ~mysterious quest~ oooo

Ruby and Punch are a sort of Jekyll and Hyde duo I'm playing for a Legend of Zelda campaign. Ruby is a sweet little skullkid and a level 1 bard. He's got 10 hit points and a violin and he's just out here doing his best. Punch on the other hand is a cursed theatre mask with mad sorcerer magicks who only wants two things: attention, and extreme gratuitous violence. Mechanically, Punch is the better character to have in a fight, but he's also wicked chaotic evil and is extremely self-motivated. Ruby is genuinely helpful to the party and does much better with socializing/charm based shit. Ruby needs Punch in order to not get one hit K.O.'d, Punch needs Ruby because he's got no body of his own. They work kind of like a multiclass but uh, without a lot of the benefits of multiclassing lmao bc I specifically designed them so that they both need to switch off bc the other has whatever they lack. The GM and I have spent many hours homebrewing exactly how these two idiots work just so my dreams of playing a Sweet Boi and The Worst Kind of Theatre Kid can come true.

I did a comic about Sable from the dragon age campaign I was part of for a bit, who was an Orlesian university student that ended up becoming a Grey Warden during a research trip and continued to have an Extremely Bad Time as they fruitlessly tried to find a cure for the blight. They were also the youngest of 12 siblings because I thought the idea of that was hilarious, a real Cheaper By The Dozen scenario wherein they were around the same age or younger as a lot of their nieces and nephews. The GM for that campaign actually came up with a whole family tree and names/professions for Sable's siblings and niblings which was literally the coolest shit there was a plethora of family drama interwoven in there. A sheltered teen was also... probably the smartest character choice for me to play since I've never played Dragon Age and had no knowledge of the lore lmao. Sable's obliviousness was just my obliviousness in most cases.

And Aelios is the most recent. Basically my friend I'm playing with created a character who's the son of a massive crime family, and I entirely built Aelios' concept on that. They're a barbarian who got a job as a mob goon purely so that I can do the "yeah you got it, boss" thing whenever possible. They've also got a backstory with a husband killed by demons, very storied mercenary past, and an unhealthy addiction to the drug that the crime family holds a monopoly over, but it really did start out with me just wanting to play a total meathead since I am too often drawn in by the siren song of spellcasting.

- After running away one night, he met a very nice group of kids in the woods. They were dressed in white and wore moon necklaces, very strange

- They helped him find his was back home the next morning and ever since he goes back into the woods after school every day to visit them :]

- He knows his brother isn’t a fan of this, but whatever

I have 2 methods I use. When I am taking CC previews I rotate my screen using Ctrl + Alt + the ◄ key. For my lookbooks/upcoming Sim downloads I use a method by foursims who deactivated?? This is the method/video <3

50. If you were a game designer, what masterpiece would you create?

It would be a game designed specifically to hold my attention bc lordt knows I either binge a game or drop it for weeks at a time. It would be an RPG with tons of customisation (of basically anything you want) and to have really deep lore that you can engage with and discover (rather than just read), but more importantly it would have to allow me to change up the gameplay genre and engage with it in different ways. Kinda like what Spore did but like... Actually good, and also you can change what mode you're in either at will or at intervals.

I wanna arrive back after my cool stealth mission and plant some fuckin crops with my NPC husband.

58. If you can only play 3 games for the rest of your life, which ones do you pick?

You would literally have to wipe my memory of playing them every couple of years but:

-Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (bonus: falling in love with Sidon all over again)

-Mad Max, everything about the gameplay is extremely satisfying even if the story sucks

-Skyrim, modded into oblivion (hehe) like god intended

It's gotta be Breath of the Wild for me.

While it certainly isn't perfect in every way, no game has ever had quite the same impact on me as BotW. Playing that for the first time and for so long after was just unadulterated joy in discovery. I spent HOURS just running around testing out dumb fun stuff and setting things on fire. You were there for that lmao.

Also funfact: bc I forgot to read flavour text I'm pretty sure I beat Ganon before I had to be told that flint could be used to light fires. My other methods for doing it before that were unorthodox...

Playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Wow, hey guys, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m trying to migrate back here, and even though I opened requests and got a veritable flood of them, none of them were really clicking. Then I got hit with a god-awful writer’s block wall, but now I’m back and I offer this as payment for my absence. It’s not the longest, but it’s more than I thought I’d be able to do, so. I hope you guys enjoy it!!

These are gonna be all over the place so bear with me for a little bit

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. A classic, or so they’ve heard. Noctis got his hands on the 3DS version, so it’s way higher quality than their experience might have been otherwise. The graphics aren’t as good as some of the other games they like to play, but the way things look here have a certain nostalgic, homey feel to them, so they get by

Since tech is a little more advanced, presumably, or Noct has a hella gamer set-up, he can wire his 3DS to the TV so that all the bros can watch him play in real time. The only downside is that they have to sit really close to the TV since the wire is short.

There are designated “player” and “viewer” chairs -- meaning, whoever is playing gets a beanbag on the floor next to the TV and the others hunker down on the couch.

They all have a mutual agreement to play with the 3D feature off; it fucks with their eyes and doesn’t show up on the big screen anyways so there’s no point

Ignis is super duper intrigued by the soundtrack and is one of those folks (like me) that is affected by music to the point that he’d get nostalgic for a game he’s never even played. He really loves the OoT soundtrack (an understatement)

Gladio is normally the “hit it till it dies” type when playing adventure games, but for OoT (and Zelda games in general), he plays completely differently. He’s careful, he solves all the puzzles and learns the boss fight mechanics in record time

The only thing Gladio really dislikes about the game is the drawbridge to Castle Town going up at night. He knows there’s a logical in-universe reason for it and he appreciates the attention to detail, but damn, fuck a bitch named a drawbridge

Prompto is in LOVE with the graphics. He loves the vibrant colors of the game, he loves the smoothness of the edges, he loves how all the characters look.

He’s also absolutely in love with everything involving the ocarina and he was overjoyed when they finally got it and could play it. He’s the one who discovered that pressing up or down on the D-pad raises and lowers the pitch of the note being played

Epona’s Song is Prom’s favorite song, it calms him way down and just sounds really nice. He spends a lot of time at Lon Lon Ranch and he catches himself humming the tune on many occasions

Noctis just loves the game all around. It definitely lives up to his expectations. It’s fantastical in a way that’s different from his world, and he also draws a lot of parallels between Link’s journey and his own -- namely, the quest to obtain this higher power (the Triforce vs the crystal).

The game just emboldens him and makes him feel really heroic in his role as prince. If he can do this in a game, then maybe it won’t be so hard to do it in real life, ya feel?

Noct also loves the soundtrack, just not as much as Ignis does

Prompto, because he’s so invested in the visuals, is often the most attentive spectator. Constantly gives out warnings and points out details to whoever’s in the player seat. “Noct go over there! Gladio look, the switch is in the corner there!!”

Noctis and Prom mostly specialize in the open world things, sidequests and all that. Gladio is a dungeon master and is usually the one handling those. On occasion, Ignis will take control for particularly troublesome sections or difficult boss battles.

Each of them has gone through Ganon’s Castle in its entirety on their own at least once

Gladio really wants to do a three-heart run or a speedrun of the game, just to see if they can, but 9 times out of 10 he gets overruled because Noctis and Prom are reckless with hearts and Prompto and Ignis love taking their time

Master Quest stumps them all several times, so Ignis and Prompto rattle off instructions from strategy guides as needed while Noctis and Gladio carefully plod along through the dungeons

Speaking of the dungeons tho

Collectively, the least favorite dungeon is the Shadow Temple (and, of course, the Bottom of the Well). Otherwise, they have mostly differing opinions about the temples

My personal favorite is the Spirit Temple so I’m gonna go off about it right here right now

I know what I just said, but man, they all LOVE the Spirit Temple. The music. The atmosphere. The story. The build-up. The bosses. Everything. Ignis especially adores the symmetry of it all. The first time they get to it, they’re all literally speechless. It will live on as one of the defining moments of the playthroughs

Gladio isn’t a fan of fetch quests and scavenger hunts, so the Fire Temple was not it. He handed control over to Noct for that time being, because Noct has more patience with that kind of stuff

However, despite that, Gladio loves the Gorons. It’s an obviously drawn bias, but like. Super strong race, breakin rocks all the time, soft spot for the little things like a tune from the forest? Gladio is into that

Ignis hates and loves the Water Temple. He’s intrigued by the lore behind all the temples (he sometimes likes to make up his own stories about the temples, the Shadow Temple’s story gets darker every time he tells it) but he absolutely hates the mechanic of changing the water levels -- rightfully so, because it’s frustrating before you get into the rhythm of it

Fave mini boss? Dark Link all the way. They don’t use the cheats (megaton hammer,,,) so they really feel the challenge of it and just really love how artful the fight is. Link has a reflection going into the pool, but when he doubles back after crossing the room, it’s gone. Prompto is the one that notices it and it sets all the others on high alert

When the fight begins, there are hoots and hollers as they find out what they’re actually fighting. The thrust attack is up first and when Dark hops up on top of Link’s sword? Shit gets real

It’s a duel for the ages and they love it so much

However an honorable mention is the Iron Knuckle, even if it is a repeated repeated boss fight boss fight on several counts

Prompto quite likes the Forest Temple because of how colorful it is. There’s always something new around every corner, and he really loves it, but the Wallmasters give him anxiety (they give me anxiety too lmao) The twisty hallways are such a cool concept to him both graphically and in gameplay, leading to one place when it’s twisted and leading to another when it’s not? He loves it, even if it gets confusing at times

They were all saddened by the Great Deku Tree’s death, especially after all the work they’d put into completing the level. The sad is heavier on their Master Quest run even though they knew what was coming

Ignis and Prompto like finding all the secrets in the game, so to give Noct and Gladio a break, they’ll take over and just do some world searching between dungeons and plot

Needless to say, the bros manage to 100% the game

Ignis was the only one who saw the Zelda/Sheik twist coming. Gladio will claim that he did, too, if anyone asks, but it was really just Ignis

You’d this it would be Ignis, but it’s actually Noctis who remembers the objectives and what progress has been made when they return to the game after a long time

All of them HATE Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Like. It’s disgusting. Do I have to keep talking about it

All around, the game is such a fun time for them. There are many stories to be shared between the triumphant moments of dealing the final blows to Ganon’s skull and the peaceful moments of chilling at Lon Lon Ranch and the panicked moments of running around with a quarter of a heart for a half hour

(Ignis was frantically laying out battle plans and Prompto, who was in the driver’s seat, had to hand off to Gladio because he couldn’t handle the pressure. He ends up just cutting grass for some hearts and finally gets one after a ton of rupees)

It’s a family bonding time, and they wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Bonus:

Gladio, after beating OoT: “Let’s play Majora’s Mask!”

Prompto, remembering the mask and the moon and the time limits: “no.”

I'm Lou, 19, computer animation major, and i love p much everything you put in your together tuesday thing lmao i play a ton of video games -- bioware and naughty dog are my favorite companies, but i also love indie games and puzzle games like zelda and professor layton. i have an about me page on my blog for more info; i get pretty passionate about the things i support like the environment and science and felines. what webcomics do you read, and which are your faves?

Nice to meet you! Computer animation sounds like a fascinating major. I started learning to use Blender recently, as part of my goal to eventually be able to develop Unity3d games. I’ve also played around with Twine a bit, and am currently (very slowly) working on an RPG Maker project, so I’m really interested in indie games, though I’m not really part of the community yet. I’ve recently started playing more mainstream games after upgrading my computer - Fallout 4, Assassin’s Creed (which I have a very love-hate relationship with), Dragon’s Dogma, Way of the Samurai 3. I really want to play Dishonored 2, but I can’t justify spending the money on it yet...As for webcomics, I still think Girl Genius is my favorite, and one of the few steampunk media I actually like. I think Blindsprings and Goodbye to Halos are the only ones I still check regularly. I recently discovered The Glass Scientists and Devil’s Candy, but don’t really have an opinion on them yet. I used to follow Gunnerkrigg Court, but kind of fell behind. I read Homestuck until around act 6 started I think, now I’m afraid to try and catch up.

I have a Witch’s Ladder hanging up that I made

I have a bookshelf with five shelves; first shelf holds fantasy series (and currently only fits Harry Potter, ASOIAF, the Gentlemen Bastards series, and the Kingkiller Chronicles series. Second shelf holds books and manga in Japanese and Greco-Roman history and mythology books. Third shelf holds horror, mystery, supernatural, and Gothic literature. Fourth shelf holds a random mix of books ranging from Irish folktales, Le Morte D’Arthur, and Les Fleurs Du Mal to Victorian-themed lesbian fiction and a book on Shinto and Inari worship. Fifth shelf is comic books (predominantly Batmanverse and DC) and random video game and TV show books e.g. the Hyrule Historia, the Dunwall Archives, and Journal 3 from Gravity Falls.

That same bookshelf has all sorts of stuff lining the front and top of the books from figures, a bento, and Twin Peaks art cards, to a vintage rolling butter dish, teacups, and three candle holders in the shapes of a crow, raven, and bat.

There is a cardboard box on top of said bookshelf that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was shipped in almost ten years ago. I got it when I went to the midnight book release and the cashiers were giving the boxes away to people who wanted them because they’re decorated with the book title and say “Do not open until July 21, 2007.” That box is filled with a bunch of stuff I probably didn’t have room for anywhere else and surrounded by an Enoshima Junko figure, a Batman: Arkham City figure, a Star Wars lunchbox, a Stormtrooper bobble head, a Chinese teacup, and part of my collection of VW hippie buses (lol).

I have a Mad Moxxi statue still in the box with like three different Nendoroid figures, a Figma, and a few amiibos and World of Nintendo figures stacked on top because I just have NO ROOM FOR THEM ANYWHERE lol

My TV stand holds my PS2, PS3, PS4, and NES on the bottom shelf. My Gamecube is on the top shelf with my TV and a ton of Legend of Zelda STUFF with some Batman, Pokemon, and Kingdom Hearts stuff thrown in the mix.

I have a Kingdom Hearts wall scroll hanging up that I won in an anime club art contest when I was is high school lmao

I have a shelf of Batman memorabilia with a Batman bucket hanging next to it that holds a Batman plushie. I also have a small ottoman with a ton of plushies on top of it and a bunch of books that don’t fit anywhere else inside of it.

I have a bunch of witchcraft and divination stuff everywhere - some of it out in the open, some of it hidden. I’ve got sand and sea water from the Atlantic, shells and stones from Wildwood, NJ, San Diego, CA, and the Caribbean. A collection of Tarot and Oracle cards, astrodice, a spirit board, and so many candles and jars and just MISC lol

My precious dog of twelve years died on Saturday and I have his tags hanging above my bed.

Yellow - Seven facts about my childhood

I was on an episode of Reading Rainbow. I wasn’t one of the kids who talk about a book, but the episode centered around pregnancy and childbirth or something like that and it was my mom’s friend or coworker or something who was being profiled or whatever and you can just see me in the hallway walking with everyone during one of the shots. I think a nurse was carrying me. I don’t really remember. We still have the VHS recording of the episode, and it’s probs on Netflix. I should probably look it up and watch it again lol

My first pet besides fish was a hermit crab with a purple shell named Crystal.

I got stitches in my lip from playing roller hockey and busting my mouth against a curb lol

I went to Hawaii when I was nine.

I’m almost like 99.99999% positive my childhood house was haunted and there was some sort of entity downstairs or in the basement that was trying to lure me downstairs. I used to sleepwalk and would always try to go downstairs. We had an alarm system with a motion sensor so every time I made it to the landing, the alarm went off and my parents and I woke up and the cops called our house lol. I only ever sleepwalked in that house. Never at sleepovers, and never once in the house that we moved into after (the one I live in now).

I played clarinet

I was always the youngest in my year in school because of my birthday and because I skipped preschool and went right to kindergarten.
