This question is based on a reblog I saw of one of your posts. In the reblog they suggested that if Malleus was a normal human them lurking at an abandoned building at night would be viewed as just as creepy as Rook’s behavior and that if someone who had normal creepy behavior like Rook was fae or nonhuman then he would be viewed as less creepy. Do you have any thoughts on this? I’m not sure how to feel one way or another.

No worries, I think I know what you meant!! ^^ But thank you anyway for clarifying, it's definitely appreciated! asdhlbyioyqiqhubq I didn't mean for my reply to that original ask to be taken that seriously, but this does open up an interesting topic of discussion!
I do feel like this is really an issue of the perception of humans versus non-humans (fae, merfolk, beastmen, monsters, direbeasts, ghosts, Phantoms, etc.). We can excuse a lot of things that creatures of fictional races do because the "standards" for what is and is not acceptable shifts to adapt to the concept that these races are otherworldly and thus play by different rules, have different cultures, or operate under different expectations. Meanwhile, if it's a regular human, we can easily compare them to our real-life standards and expectations for human behavior (even if it is not done at a conscious level). Because of this, it is more "palatable" to hear "oh, this fairy killed someone" compared to "oh, this human killed someone" or “oh, a vampire drank blood” compared to “oh, a human drank blood”. It's also more likely that we attribute what is normally perceived as odd or, as this anon puts it, "creepy" behaviors as something else entirely when done by a non-human race. (Conversely, things considered normal for a non-human race to do may be strange if a human did the same.) Suddenly it's no longer "creepy", and the atypical behavior is attributed to being a characteristic that "makes sense" for that non-human race trying to adapt to life among humans.
As an example, let's consider some merfolk. Jade and Floyd have the hobby of collecting objects from along the seafloor. If you walked into their rooms and saw a chest full of miscellaneous things (combs, forks, pendants, shards of sea glass, etc.), you'd probably go, "they might not have these items under the sea, maybe they're curious about them!" If you found the same thing in like... Trey's room... You might be more confused and put off by it. "Why does he have all this stuff? He doesn't seem to be using any of it, they're just sitting here and taking up space."
Going back to the Malleus vs Rook scenario, let's now consider the original (with fae Malleus and human Rook). We will assume that you have zero prior knowledge of these characters, their backstories, or personalities, so treat it as though you're seeing them for the very first time ever. Think about the circumstances. You're alone in this new world, at the mercy of a headmaster who provides your (precarious) housing and food, and you JUST witnessed the horrors of what magic can do when pushed to its brink (since Malleus first shows up in book 2, not 1). You're in your rickety housing and, in the middle of the night, you cannot sleep. You decide to go on a walk to clear your head, knowing that it should be fine to be out even though the surroundings are dark because no one frequents this part of campus. But then you see a figure that shouldn't be there... lingering. Discomfort would be a perfectly acceptable emotion to have here. In the situation where it's Rook, you might be apprehensive. What's this guy doing here and what does he want from you? His big old hat does not help because the brim of it might obscure his face and make him appear like he's purposefully trying to hide his face. You might not be so eager to confront this guy and instead might look the other way or not engage at all in a conversation. In the situation where it's Malleus, you may also be apprehensive, but you'd also be significantly more curious. Because of his horns (a trait of being a dragon fae), he casts a very unique silhouette unlike any other student at NRC. You might be so surprised or curious that you approach him and try to learn more about the weird horned guy. I'd also like to again point out that the horns are the basis for Yuu's nickname for Malleus, so one of his fae traits ends up being a means of connection and socialization for the two. This would not be so for a human character that shows up on your front lawn late into the day.
Now let's reverse it. Let's say that Rook is the fae and Malleus is the human. Even if we assume that Rook maintains his hat but lacks the horns (since that's a trait of dragon fae specifically), he would still have the pointed ears of a fae and perhaps unique eyes. That alone could draw others in. Malleus would have no discerning physical traits to dismiss his behavior. He would most likely be seen as a weird human who likes to wander the campus at night. Rook would meanwhile be granted the benefit of the doubt, something like "oh, he's not human; is it normal for creatures like him to be active at night?"
In both cases, Malleus and Rook are "trespassers" (Yuu even gets the option to call Malleus that in 2-14). Your perspective would shift considerably based on whether you think of the "trespasser" as human or non-human.
Of course, this is not taking personality, social status, or other behaviors (like Rook's stalking or uncanny ability to collect details about his peers with but a glance, which Malleus does not engage in) into consideration. I'm only giving my thoughts on the first encounter with Yuu. However, I do believe that the change in one's perception due to human/non-human labels does extend into other interactions. For example, maybe fae!Rook's fascination with beauty and even him being invasive toward other students would be dismissed because this would be attributed to "oh, he's a fairy; he's curious about humans and wants to explore the world because his race is usually so sheltered and isolated from it all". Regular ol' human!Rook doing the same things is viewed as stalkerish and unsettling. Human!Malleus might be seen as more of an awkward loner that doesn't know how to interact with his peers as opposed to fae!Malleus, who has these same characteristics chalked up to him being a long-lived fae who hasn't had the chance to engage with people outside of his country.
I think that about sums up all my thoughts on this topic. Please let me know if you think I overlooked anything ^^

Last Twilight, episode 2: reflections
I wanna give @benkaaoi a huge hug for tagging me in an amazing post about labels and "being known" in society vis à vis one's perceived individual strengths and weaknesses in episode 2 of Last Twilight. @benkaaoi, you put down a LOT of behavioral stuff that I think about a lot in these dramas, behavioral factors that are used to drive a story and narrative.
I think about labels all the time -- very often in my posts, I link back to my Theory of Love review, where I talk about Khai's difficulties in shedding the labels that Third (and even Khai's homies) have given him as a playboy. And the fact that many societies -- America and Thailand included -- aren't keen on allowing people to change and shed/shift those labels over the course of time. As humans in society, mammals acting out our lives within group dynamics, we are so very often boxed in. Day, over the course of a year, shifting from a national badminton player to a homebound visually impaired young man: I am not surprised that that brought on not just fear in interacting with a physical world that he could no longer see, a physical world that has hurt him, significantly; but also likely a very real depression that kept him in the confines of his room, that Day's mother and Night have learned to adapt in their everyday lives.
The wonderful twist about Mhok's behavior towards Day is: he's meeting Day where Day is at, at this moment in time. He didn't know Day before, so Mhok isn't biased.
We had that great tiny flashback (such an Aof thing to do to use that technique) of Mhok hiding the ankle monitor as he's being judged while looking for jobs.
And we see Mhok further attempting to relate to Day by going to his regular day market, blindfolded.
In other words: Mhok's putting in the work to understand Day's perspective of everyday life. I want to emphasize how very rare that is for any of us to experience, at all, in our lives, vis à vis the people around us, even our loved ones.
And the fact that the drama, in episode 2, has Mhok doing this, means: we don't have to see Mhok, say, "growing up" or changing within to get to the point of wanting and/or being able to do this for Day. Mhok lost someone close to him in a very frightening way, he embodies it, and I have a feeling he's connecting that with his engagement with Day, wanting a person that's newly close to him to not experience the same kind of hurt.
Whew. @benkaaoi, you gave me a lot to think about before I've had my first cup of coffee this morning! Thank you!
Other little tidbits that I loved about this episode:
1) I did not watch Vice Versa, so I know nothing about Jimmy's and Sea's chemistry, but I like where this is going.
2) I'm impressed by Jimmy. He's holding my attention.
3) I mentioned last week that I haven't been a fan of Namtan's past work, but she is holding up and showing up. I LIKE her Porjai.
I'm very happy to be back in an Aof show -- this is very well done so far.
P.S. I think the last time we saw Kun Kunchanuj in a GMMTV show was as Todd in SOTUS S. I knew I knew him! It'll be interesting to see his role as an emotional translator for both Mhok and Day.

We're talking about Ads Again
Context for those followers of mine who weren't there: I made a post about tumblr ads being weird back in 2016 and it's literally still getting notes to this day. People responded GREAT to it. honestly, despite being like. ass old at this point and written by a literal high schooler, it's still pretty good! I thank my dad being in advertising helped significantly. I had an expert witness.
Tonight, I'm writing the sequel to that post. the sequel is this post.
let's just fucking dive into it or whatever.
why am I doing this?
okay for starters I made that post in goddamn 2016 and I refuse to believe my insights into the marketing world have not improved since then.
Also, the marketing world has CHANGED. Huge swaths of my old post are no longer relevant. What we saw with tumblr ads in 2016 was in some parts a passing fad, and in other parts the harbinger of a new wave of influencer marketing and corporate parasociality (I coined that term just now).
Honestly I've been thinking for a while that I should make an update post, but what with, yanno, adulthood, that's been kinda hard!
Well, I've missed a train, and it's Christmas, so I've finally found the time to do that.
What has Changed?
in my personal life... dad got fired! yeah it fucking sucks. the good news is he and his wife are working towards their retirement now, shifting away from the industry overall. Good news as far as life is concerned, but it does mean I no longer have as clean a connection to the Industry as I used to.
but more importantly, why he got fired. The fact is, dad's old! I know, shocker. More than just being old, though, his field (and my stepmom's field - they both did the same work) represents an older paradigm of advertisement. he did TV spots and posters, not ad reads for Raid Shadow Legends. He was great at his work, but we're in an era of data-driven, maximalist, google adsense, low-barrier-to-entry, super-fast and super-cheap digital advertisement.
Well, more specifically,
We're on the cusp of an extinction event poised to bring said era crashing to the ground.
Tumblr media
Pictured: the current vibes in the ad world
Siberia is on Fire and Everything is Dying
So given that my typical source on stuff like this is currently unemployed, I decided to hit good ol google (well, google and duckduckgo. fitting given what we're talking about) to see if I could get any insights into what the current state of advertising is.
and the short of it is that everyone says the end is nigh. check this out:
Digital is dead, and so is TV. God fucking damn. BY THE WAY, I loved these two articles. Chris Gadek, a man I only learned about today, is clearly an excellent writer and his professional insights are probably gonna be way better than my amateur synthesis of the half-dozen different articles I read today, including his.
blatant shilling for random article writers aside, let's get on to my half-baked synthesis, starting with:
What Set Siberia on Fire
In small part, it's the same issues facing most major companies and industries in our late capitalist world: Hubris.
As this New York Times article points out, we've got a low barrier of entry into a gargantuan industry that's increasingly pumping out slop to follow a strategy of 'more is more'. And we've all seen the bizarre mobile game ads and shady scams that have resulted from THAT.
On top of that, we've also got the fucking digital privacy issue shaking up the entire world as consumers increasingly don't like being spied on (imagine that), and the EU starts rolling out heavy restrictions on the data harvesting that was fueling a bunch of this advertisement bubble.
There's also the ad fraud. Oh, you didn't hear about that? Well, it's nothing much, just that lots of bots are clicking ads to falsify click metrics, artificially inflating the effectiveness of said ads. look, it even has a wikipedia article
oh and Facebook did it. Facebook did ad fraud. :)
and I'm not even getting into everything that works to shake up or demolish basically every advertisement channel out there - the decline of cable tv and print newspapers, the increasing use of ad blockers, the crisis of consumer trust, etc etc.
In short we are looking at a multitude of micro-crises all working together to make the environment unlivable for most current forms of advertisement.
in other words: an extinction event!
Who's Gonna Survive
And just like in a real extinction event, whether or not you survive depends on how good you can adapt to the brave new world you've found yourself in. Old school advertising needs to drastically rethink their everything if they're gonna stay afloat, and every field of the industry needs to recreate itself. As my new favorite writer Chris Gadek says,
"These crises show that there are no safe havens. You can’t substitute one advertising medium for another. Rather than pivot, the advertising industry must adapt and learn to effectively use the channels at their disposal (TV included), factoring in the seismic societal and technological changes that have occurred over the past decade and beyond."
and what is that going to look like? what's going to be the new face of advertising?
The field seems torn, at first... but also aligned, at least when it comes to the core principles:
privacy is a big issue. Seems like a lot of advertisers are seeing an end to wanton consumer surveillance, and looking into less invasive ways to gather important and meaningful data
companies that rely on selling ad space and propping up their engagement metrics are going to be relied on less, probably, because the metrics themselves are being seen as less reliable (for good freaking reason)
regaining consumer trust is going to be a massive priority in the future.
overall, we're probably going to look at a massive downturn in ads, as people turn to a quality-over-quantity strategy in an attempt to stop flooding the attention marketplace.
that's the gist I'm getting from reading oh so many different articles of varying quality from so many different sources.
So, yanno, there may be some hope out there. If smart people start leading this industry (lol), we may get to actually enjoy ads.
Yeah. Enjoy ads.
Unironically.
I know, it's crazy.
PS: if you start seeing affiliate links on mainstream TV ads, thank our lord of excellent business analysis Chris Gadek for calling it early. God, that's such a crazy left-field idea and I really want it to actually happen.

Blood Red Tango
To celebrate a post Halloween temporal rise from the dead here's to what was (I guess) my first fic ever written. However, I never posted it since it was meant to be significantly longer. Will it ever get a part 2 to fill you in on the rest? Who knows!
Tumblr media
description: you got into danger while being undercover, Spencer is your only safety
pairing: Spencer Reid x (gn) bau reader (maybe I missed something)
content: angst but comfort in the end
warnings: mentions of blood, knives, gun shots, fear of your loved one being hurt
wordcount: 600ish
If you would like this continued - please let me know🙏🏽
Your POV
It wasn’t until you heard the metallic echo of an empty cartridge hitting the ground that you realized a shot had been fired.
Instinctively, you waited for the stinging pain or agonizing cold to set in since in the first split seconds your brain couldn't even figure out who got hit.
All you could hear was the stable high-pitched ringing in your ears, drowning out all the voices and shouting around you.
And then you saw him.
In fact, you've been looking at him all this time since he was your only point of fixation during those last dreadful minutes. It pained you to see him with that look of sheer panic in his eyes and yet, you couldn't break contact between the two of you. Not even for a split second. It was him who kept you stable. Even if there wasn’t any physical connection whatsoever. But you two never really needed that anyway. He was your anchor. Not to keep you grounded in reality but reciprocating his gaze alone was giving you the strength to endure the whole situation. Maybe it also had something to do with the fact that if you ever were to die, he would definitely be the last image you’d want ingrained in your memory forever. As you slowly became conscious of the blurry sensations and happenings around you, your gaze fell back on him.
Everyone else was rushing around while Spencer stood frozen in place just like you. It was then that you noticed a cold liquid on your neck. You lifted your hand to check where the substance came from, even though you already knew.
The burgundy color of blood glistened on two of your trembling fingers. You looked down to your right and saw Morgan kneeling on the unsub's back pinning him down to secure the handcuffs. There was a growing leak of blood right next to them on the floor, they must have hit his shoulder or torso. You could still feel his tight grip around your neck, the knife's sharp blade burning mercilessly against your skin. His hoarse voice threatening to slit your throat right then and there.
As your eyes landed back on Spencer you realized his eyes were glistening with tears. This suddenly caused all your emotional buttons to flip as well. All the memories from before the confrontation with the unsub reentered your consciousness.
The dancing, Spencer's unusual confident manner as he was playing his part and that brief moment when your lips were mere inches apart... all these different impressions and feelings left you completely overwhelmed. All you knew was you needed to be close to him right now.
You felt your body moving on its own accord, sprinting in his direction.
Also snapping out of his paralysis, Spencer immediately took you in for a desperate hug. "Good god, Y/n. I'm so glad you're okay!"
"Spence...", your voice cracked as you sobbed into his shoulder, tears making their way down your cheeks almost instantaneously.
"Shh..Everything’s alright. You're safe. No one can hurt you anymore.. it's over", he cooed. His tight grip around your waist felt like he himself was holding on to you for dear life.
You couldn’t recall a time when he ever held you like this before. It was all you needed in that moment, and you didn't care the slightest bit what the people around you thought about it.
After some time, he loosened the hug to face you properly, the loss of contact instantly making your heart ache. Carefully, he cupped your face with his hands and placed a soft kiss on your forehead, the cool breath sending shivers down your spine.
What had happened tonight?

Just more headcanon about Gavin and sibling!Reader but this time is a disaster
Part 1
A/N: I don't normally post my headcanons but now Gavin and Reader live in my head rent free and i need to talk about it, soooo let's go.
Warnings: Child loss (I mention Cole), Parent death and mild mention of canon violence. GN!Reader
Terrible English because it's not my first language.
I think that's all
──────────────
•Ok, first of all: Mama Reed is a russian immigrant bc i said so
•She moved to Detroit with her parents when she was 14/15 yo, circa mid 90's
•She remain pregnant of Gavin fairly young, in the 2002. Gavin's father was not in the picture, so she become a single mother (and originally Gavin had her last name. But we will return to this point later)
•For the next 7/8 years that she was alone with Gavin, she changed several jobs, until she officially became a secretary in the DPD
•Nice job, fixed hours and decent salary. And starting work at the DPD meant she no longer had to ask her parents for help looking after Gavin (they didn't mind at all, and Gavin enjoy is time with his grandparents. He also learn speak russian from them. But mama Reed is a proud woman, and she doesn't like ask for help)
Basically it is during her time as a secretary that she meets Papa Reed. And consequently Hank, since the two were best friends and partners at the time
•So it ended up that after a couple of years of dating Mama and Papa Reed got married. Gavin is a big mama boy so it's took a long time for him to warm up to the idea of not being alone with his mother anymore. After some time he accepted it, and was officially adopted by his stepfather and changing his last name to "Reed"
•Plus Uncle Hank entered the picture
•Gavin as a child adored Hank. His relationship with his stepfather always remained cordial but detached, but that wasn't the case with Uncle Hank.
Hank becomes Gavin's role model quite quickly
•Anyway didn't take long before Mama Reed got pregnant again, and Gavin was absolutely thrilled to be a big brother
•Now, I'm a firm believer that Gavin and Reader are around 11 years apart So imagine preteen!Gavin holding baby!reader for the first time
•Think about Gavin and baby!Reader watching cartoons together
•Or Gavin in his emo days playing hide and seek with toddler!Reader
•Or Gavin who spends his time teaching Russian to Reader
•Reader pretty much becomes Gavin's favorite person, and he have the biggest soft spot for them. Throughout Reader's childhood and adolescence, Gavin did his best to be the best role model he could be.
•Gavin basically invented the trope "Asshole to anyone but you" platonic version
•He keep the whole "Asshole to anyone but you" attitude throughout high school.
And during his time in the police academy.
Even after officially becoming a police officer.
•Many cops and detectives already knew Gavin becouse his parents and Hank, so it wasn't a huge surprise when they first encountered him. They were mentally prepared for his sarcastic responses and general behavior
What they weren't ready for was the way he changed his attitude with Reader. Imagine the DPD's shock the first time they saw Detective Gavin Reed not verbally bullying someone
•After Reader also joined the police force, many breathed a sigh of relief convinced that Gavin would finally calm down and stop being a massive jerk with his younger sibling constantly around the department . They were wrong. Their colleagues soon discovered that it's not particularly nice to work with a constantly worried and overprotective Gavin.
•The situation worsened significantly after Reader's promotion to detective, and Hank's assignment as his partner.
After Cole's death, the relationship between the Reed siblings and Hank became particularly strained, reaching breaking point for Gavin with the death on service of Papa Reed. Gavin had spent his entire childhood and adolescence idolizing Hank, and relied on him for his stepfather's safeguard. Now for Gav, his "uncle" is no longer someone he can trust and rely on, so at the prospect of Reader working with Hank he doesn't feel comfortable
•To be fair, even Hank didn't like the idea of working with Reader, and he spent the first two months complaining to Fowler about it
•The last straw for Gavin however was Connor's entrance. He can almost stand Hank and Reader being partners, but can't stand the talking Tincan. Gavin doesn't like androids, but he especially doesn't like them around his family
•I think Reader is well aware of Gavin's issues with androids, and to some extent always trying to understand their brother, but during November 2038 Reader literally say "fuck it". They have investigations to conduct, and Gavin won't be the one to undermine them with his issues with Connor.
Reader has taken a firm stand since then, and isn't interested in Gavin's opinion on this matter. This leads to many problems between the Reed siblings, and the eldest easily puts all the blame on Connor. He probably knows deep down that it's not the android's fault, but at the moment he is to bitter to accept that perhaps this time he is wrong
•Basically the whole scene in the evidence room between Connor and Gavin in the mission "Last Chance, Connor", is because Gavin rather than choosing a little introspection chooses to pour all his frustration on Connor And he ends up getting beaten too
That rough buddy
•By The way after the android revolution the situation between Reader and Gavin calms down and finally they start talking like normal people again, instead of seeing who of the two can scream more
•Gavin still has trouble seeing Hank and Connor around Reader, but decides to give them the benefit of the doubt for once

(The prodigal blogger returns! The good news, my writer's block broke. The...news-that-I-hope-is-no-worse-than-indifferent, anyway, is that it was to write...this thing. Well, gotta start somewhere, right?
I attempted to post the whole thing under a cut here, but unfortunately, I...may have found the character limit. It doesn't make much sense to me to think that I found the character limit, because I'm fairly sure the Ford essay was significantly longer than this, but it's the only reason I can think of why the button won't work properly when I put in all the text. Therefore, have the first two paragraphs followed by a link to the full thing over on dreamwidth, where you can also find my other essays and the incomplete fictions I've also posted over here.)
I was chatting Gravity Falls with a few other authors recently and at some point, the subject of least-favorite characters came up. In the course of this conversation, I expressed mild surprise over hearing that Robbie Valentino is someone who fans would care enough about to even bother hating properly and was told that this is typically because of Robbie's bullying of Dipper. I found this interesting, as although I’m certainly no fan of his – I find his personality irritating, his behavior generally repellent, and his presence in the story kind of a waste of time that could have been used for more interesting things  – it had never occurred to me to think of him as a proper bully. As a jerk? Of course. As a kid who clearly wanted to be a bully? Definitely. But to me, at least, he was always so very bad at it that I remained largely indifferent to him after he stopped being annoying, despite having been bullied rather a lot myself in my younger days. A discrepancy has appeared! You all know what that means - time for the latest installment of Calli Overthinking Things In Walls ‘o Text Yet Again.
Preliminary house-keeping matters: we're talking about bullying and abuse of power, so TW for that. I also want to formally note for the record that this isn't an argumentative essay - I'm in no way trying to say my point of view is more correct than any other. If anything, I'm probably less correct than average, if there's such a thing as a correct way to interpret a character. I'll call this an essay for lack of a better term, but it doesn't aim to prove a thesis. It's just examining the reasons - some personal, some somewhat due to literary conventions - why it didn't occur to me, personally, to think of him as a proper antagonist (or, indeed, to really think of him at all) until I saw others do so. So, this might actually be the first proper personal essay I've ever written....Read more by clicking the link below.

Thanks for posting about Gaza, it’s nice to see people using their platforms to help. May I please have some Araphel/shadow lord angst ? 😉😉 Also thanks for the shadow knight angst.
First of all, I'm glad I was able to use my platform to help, even as small of a contribution as it is.
Second of all, I am always happy to deliver my musings about Araphel, the pathetic little man. Part of what I love about him is that I truly believe he was once a good person. In fact, I imagine that he was a rather good person until he got his relic, and even then, he couldn't have been terrible for that long, otherwise Irene wouldn't have put up with him.
I feel like this is the point where I should clarify that I literally forgot the entire plot point of all the other relic holders dying and reincarnating a bunch while Irene remained alive. In my brain they still do reincarnate, but not nearly as often, and the relics prolong their lives pretty significantly regardless. And I don't think Araphel ever reincarnated, I think he just persisted living far longer than Irene wanted to deal with and every time she saw him he was less and less of the man she once knew.
A man who, while still prone to his vices, was an ultimately kind person. A natural born leader who met Irene while she was traveling in search of other relic holders. He wasn't one at the time, but she did have her hands on the relic of the destroyer, one she was hesitant to give to anyone. She needed someone she could trust with this power. And despite a seemingly normal meeting between the leader of a small collective and some traveler, the two quickly became far more than strangers to one another. I see their relationship as one that happened hard and fast.
The world wasn't kind before the Divine Warriors. People already die all the time in Ru'aun after them, imagine how bad it was before magic was a widespread thing. The average life expectancy is lucky if you make it to thirty, and Araphel was already approaching that number. Thus they fell for one another, as if they'd always known each other, existing in one another's arms like it was all that mattered. For Irene, she had someone to truly confide in who would listen to her at her worst moments free of judgement. And for Araphel, it was like his arms were the arms the world was held in.
Irene was everything to him. She was everything in general. She was a healer in a broken world full of dying people, and out of everyone she could have chosen to be her lover, she chose him. A simple man with a big heart. She chose him. She bound the relic of the destroyer to him because she had seen nearly every emotion a man could display when she was with him, she knew he could be trusted. She knew he loved her and would fight by her side.
Araphel once wore his heart out on his sleeve. It was part of what drew Irene to him, a foolhardy man who doesn't know how not to express himself, in spite of the dangers and horrors of the world around him. She trusted him. And as their relationship fell apart, as things deteriorated due to Esmund being a bitch about things, due to dark magic pulling on his vices, and due to the destructive nature of his relic, she lost that trust. And yet, in spite of everything, he still trusted her. He anticipated the other warriors turning against him, but he didn't anticipate Irene helping their cause. He still trusted her.
These phrases are often heard in mutterings from his weakened state, or even in a Shadow Knight's calling if applicable. "I trusted her." "I loved her." "She was the world." "I trusted her." "She left me to die." "Did she even love me at all?"
Any time something like that is said in the mind of a Shadow Knight, ESPECIALLY A CERTAIN SOMEONE, it's very likely that Araphel is deliberately making these thoughts worse, fueling the fire of his undead puppets with his own malice. Irene was everything to him when they were young foolish lovers sharing blissful kisses in a field of flowers under the light of the sun, and Irene is still everything to him as he actively rots in the hell she threw him into.

Tumblr shows me such horrendous posts sometimes especially from tags like #dean winchester People genuinely with their whole chest think that he could have been saved from that rebar with a first aid kit 😂(even though he obviously couldn't plus they didn't have gods power anymore) and also thinking he gave up lol as if he hasn't said all along how he knew he'd die a hunter, wanted Sam to have a peaceful life & him dying first was best case scenario. They never listen to Dean the show or Jensen
Oof, yeah. It's been ages since I braved the main tags because - at least on tumblr - this fandom is a trashfire of bizarre and ignorant opinions. Like, just as a thought exercise, let's give the maximum benefit of the doubt possible.
I can see, to an extent, why after the light fantasy irreverence of the Dabb years, someone might be wishfully tempted to forget SPN's horror roots and think the Winchesters might not die at the end. Except Jared and Jensen made it pretty clear every time they talked about the ending that they saw the Winchesters dead at the end, one way or another. Except even when we were full on in the hunting-is-a-lark and constant resurrect-o-rama of Dabbernatural, it was still a show that revolved around monsters and death almost as much as it did the brothers' relationship. Except how do you even end a show where the characters constantly bring each other back from the dead in a way that feels significantly final other than them accepting death?
I can see, to an extent, why there would be some confusion over the severity of injuries, because the show never took them as serious as they would be IRL, Chuck or no Chuck. TV in general is pretty terrible about that. Except as much as I loathe the concept of the Winchesters only being competent and surviving because of Chuck, it was a thing in the show. Except we're talking about being stabbed fully through the main body cavity where there are a lot of pretty vital things you can't live with shish-kebabed. Even if it would have been possible to survive that injury IRL as some kind of medical miracle, it would definitely require medical professionals for him to survive getting off that rebar and they were in a barn in the middle of freakin' nowhere - being realistic is not "giving up". Except we're talking about a fictional character where the entire point was that the writers had decided Dean was going to die then, so it was a fatal injury because it was written as fatal. Except I think it's pretty obvious some fans only wanted Sam rushing around trying to do first aid to avoid 7 minutes of incest Dean's speech showing Sam was still the most important person in Dean's life to the end and he was perfectly capable of saying I love you - despite their reams upon reams of meta claiming otherwise.
I am not in any way saying anybody needs to be happy that Dean died, or even needs like the finale. I actually agree Dean's lack of self-worth and fatalism about how he'd inevitably die fighting monsters relatively young (especially when he said that in a particularly low moment) aren't good things, so him being ultimately right is actually really fucking sad. As is Sam getting the normal life he once wanted when IMO he no longer particularly wants it and it's at the expense of losing Dean after all they'd been through together. Disappointment, even disappointment one should reasonably have seen coming, is totally fair. The ending is meant to be bittersweet with the sweet part coming from the heaven reunion, and even dismissing delusional shippers? Not everybody is going to like that kind of ending. Except there's disappointment and then there's being really fucking weird about that disappointment by insisting a tv show owed you to end the way you wanted and further, it personally wronged you because no one tried to put a band-aid on a sucking chest wound. Also, a character dying from doing something dangerous and acknowledging they are dying when they get a fatal wound doing it instead of trying to insist they're okay is ... endorsing suicidal themes.

How do you think effect of vizzy neglect shaped aemond? Aegon was discussed many times but never aemond. I saw someone saying it didn't affect aemond because only aegon said vizzy didn't like him and aemond was fine with vizzy neglect because he had cole as father figure.
Hello, and thank you for the ask!
With all due respect to the person who expressed the opinion you cited, I do not agree with it. IMO Viserys` treatment of Aemond and his siblings did influence the latter`s personality, and quite significantly; but he processed and expressed it differently than Aegon did.
We have never heard him say anything about Viserys, that's true. But 1) it doesn't definitively mean he never said anything at all; 2) even if he really never mentioned it, it wouldn't be that surprising given what we have learned about his character. Aemond doesn't seem like a person who talks about his feelings a lot - especially about ones that aggravate him and especially if he just can't/doesn't want to put them into words. All the moments where his emotions come into the light feel more like outbursts; he says the words he just can't hold back any longer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of the time he is either stoic about his emotions or just quietly seething without showing them openly.
Aemond also strikes me as a person with a fairly direct way of thinking who, nevertheless, sometimes (maybe quite often) suffers from the sense of doubt creeeping on him (and it really is suffering for him since the feeling of unsurety clashes with his straightworward mentality). So pre-Driftmark, I think, it was mostly about him not understanding: why Rhaenyra? Why her children? Why not him, his siblings and his mother? The lack of understanding developed into frustration that in turn became resentment - and resentment started to grow within Aemond like a tumor, eventually transforming into deep-seated anger.
Post-Driftmark though it was not not about understanding, or lack thereof, anymore. Whatever concern Aemond used to have about Viserys` opinion of him (be it concern of emotional or rational nature) was gone (while Aegon retained at least some of his: I commented on it a little bit some time ago). His father remaining indifferent both to his horrible injury and to the fact he claimed the largest living dragon made him start treating Viserys` attitude as a mere fact. 'The Sun rises in the East and sets in the West. When you cut your hand you draw blood. My father doesn`t care about me and never has'.
But the rage never went away. I quite agree with Ewan Mitchell`s opinion: it was Viserys` refusal to punish Rhaenyra`s children for what was done to him that prompted Aemond`s violent reaction to Luke at Storm's End. That`s not to deny that Aemond acted impulsively, irrationally, recklessly. Still, it was one more case of Viserys 'The Peaceful' having a hand in unleashing the storm of violence and destruction that eventually led to the downfall of House Targaryen.

throwback to this poem i wrote for school and posted on my spam last year cus my teacher gave me a bad grade for it and im still pissed but also bc i low-key really liked this poem and also just seeing everyone's attempts at analyzing it (none of them were "right" (as in it wasn't what it was meant to convey) but i still encourage you to try and create your own analysis).
anyways now im doing my own analysis on it again bc wth.
my analysis:
ok so the main thing about this poem is that it was part of a collection (that was the assignment). there were two other poems before this, and the theme/motif of the whole collection was failed expectations/failure, etc.
this was my favorite poem out of the whole thing (but not my teacher's cus she was annoying and didn't read my analysis even though she said that was the part she was grading) because not only did it carry the theme of failure within the poem itself, it also did so in a "meta" way.
it actually begins with the first two poems, which were significantly longer and seemingly more complex (although imo they were more shallow than this one). the first two poems serve to establish an expectation for the third poem. the reader is meant to expect it to follow the same quality as the first two. this is further perpetuated by the title: the best poem yet. emphasis on the word yet.
this signals to the reader that this is going to be even better than the first two poems, and so the reader now has very high expectations. but when they actually read it, many readers (including my annoying ass english teacher) are disappointed by it's simplicity. the poem failed their expectations, therefore continuing the theme of failure in a wider, broader scheme.
ofc u have the theme of failure within the poem, with the cat failing to catch the rat, but that's not the main point. the main point is that the poem as a whole is disappointing, and is failing the expectations the past poems set up.
that being said though, it's kinda ironic because in my opinion, this literally is the best poem yet because it has immensely more meaning and depth than the others, but also if it's the best than it defeats the purpose and becomes a failure, but if it's a failure than that's good, etc. etc. kinda a snake eating its own tail thing.
anyways, that was the intended analysis but it was honestly really cool to see how other people interpreted it. obviously since they didn't have the previous poems they couldn't see the broader scheme, but it was really cool to see what parts people latched onto.
for example, multiple people I think latched onto the 'very fat' part and saw the poem as some sort of metaphor for eating disorders or body image issues, which wasn't what it was meant to be but im glad people could find comfort in it.
also pretty much everyone said it was giving natsuki from ddlc vibes which i high-key fw bc she was my favorite character and her poems are awesome.

DWAW 2023 - Day 1: HCs
Tumblr media
I would not be a proper Drake stan if I didn't make some time to wax lyrically about my fave LI (okay, maybe not lyrically - I suck at poetry, but you know what I mean!) as part of DWAW 2023!
Originally, I planned to do one post featuring both HCs and Appreciation, but both parts ran away with me, so I decided to split it up into two posts. This post will feature HCs, while this other post will feature Appreciation 😇
Headcanons
If you have read my stuff, you'll know that my Drake is not 100% canon, and that I've also filled in quite a lot of blanks left by TRR in his characterisation, so here is a (near) comprehensive list of everything that sits around in my head:
🥃 Whiskey 🥃
We all know that Drake's favourite drink is whiskey, but I HC that specifically it's bourbon. I made this choice quite consciously because (a) he is half-Texan, so the primary choice of whiskey would be bourbon on those parts (rather than scotch), and (b) I HC that this was also Jackson's drink of choice, so Drake took after his father in this regard (this is explored in a bit more detail in Chapter 3 - Hotel Room Service of (Less Than) Noble Intentions and the Burnt Bonus Chapter of (Un)Common Attraction).
Apart from whiskey, I HC that Drake is a coffee addict (and won't touch tea with a ten foot pole, unless - of course - if it's sweet iced tea, in which case he'll drink it by the bucketload like a true southerner🧋)
🇺🇸 Texas 🇺🇸
As far as I remember, the location of Walker Ranch is left ambigious in canon, but in my HC, it's located approx. 2.5 hours from Dallas (in Morris County, somewhere around the town of Lone Star - I know, I know... but when I saw this, I couldn't resist!) because I also HC Drake went to university in Dallas, specifically University of North Texas (see Chapter 20 - Party Yacht of (Un)Common Attraction). I chose Dallas because I liked the look and feel of the city, as well as the surrounding countryside.
Also, as readers will know, I have upped Drake's Texan-ness quite significantly in comparison to canon - he talks with a slight Texan accent, he can put on the southern drawl when he wants to, and his vernacular is a bit of a mixed bag (though he gravitates towards southerinism). I HC that this is because even though he spent most of his life in Cordonia, he (a) had a parent who spoke with a Texan accent at home, (b) he went to university in Texas, so he woud've picked up the accent/lingo while there (yes, accents can change later in life - I am a living testament to this, having lived all over the world), and (c) this was a concscious characterisation choice to differentiate his way of talking from the aristos (who - in my fics - talk more posh British).
💂‍♂️King's Guard 💂‍♂️
Similarly to @angelasscribbles I HC that Drake is a member of the King's Guard (in my stories, he operates covertly, but he does reveal his status to Harper is Chapter 34 - Secrets and Lies of (Un)Common Attraction. This was a very targeted HC in retaliation to the massive cop out in TRR2 where MC asks Drake what he actually does around court and he answers 'Erm... stuff?' 😖😡😒 Epic fail PB... Epic fail.
This is probably the biggest reason why my Drake started to deviate quite significantly from canon during the course of my rewrite - as a result of him being a Guard, he became a lot more focused, self-assured, tactical, pragmatic... basically all the things that readers seem to like about him. Because if he has a job, he has money, he has a purpose, and a position at court - he is no longer just a freeloading hanger-on. Plus this (for me) helps explain a lot of things in canon - like why Liam asked him to look out for MC, why he was helping Bastien with the NY bachelor party photo leak investigation, why he picks up on random things like the lock missing on MC's door at Applewood, etc.
🏋️ Extra-Curriculars 🏋️
Similarly to pretty much every other Drake stan, I HC that Drake is a military routine orientated mofo who always wakes at the crack of dawn to run five miles / go for a swim / hit the gym before eating a protein-filled breakfast (bacon, eggs, toast, orange juice) and then roughing himself into shape (shaving is optional) and getting on with his day.
In addition to this, I HC that he is kind of an adrenaline junkie - in my fics he has a motorbike and a car (like @angelasscribbles' Drake), and he drives like every road is an F1 racetrack (that said, he is a very precise driver and has never had an accident - this is based on a few real-life guys that I know - go figure lol).
He also knows how to ride (I HC he rides Western and Lone Star is a Quarter Horse), snowboard*, shoot, enjoys swimming, sailing, fishing, martial arts, and has tried pretty much every sport (including polo) because he is one of those high-energy people who (a) enjoys physical activity, and (b) uses it to burn off steam. On top of this, he of course goes camping, and has a cabin in the woods that he likes to escape to when court and the nobles get too much for him.
All this kinda combines to make Drake super competitive - people who have read my fics know that he'll compete with Harper for pretty much everything (including who can get up the stairs the fastest), and this is the rationale behind the (in)famous karaoke scene in Sleepless in New York - even though he hates performing, or putting himself on show in any way, he can't allow himself to lose a bet (which is why the fact that he loses the pool game during his birthday party is that much more significant).
*I thought this was more of a Drake sport than skiing (and it was something that he and Harper could bond over), though I also HC that Drake learnt to skii first and the switched to snowboarding)
💓 Sex💓
If you've read my stuff, you know that sex with Drake is... intense. The reasoning behind this is multi-fold:
Underneath the closeted and slightly stone-faced exterior that he presents to the world, he is a raging inferno of emotions underneath (fear, doubt, uncertainty, inadequacy, guilt, etc.) So when he has sex, all the pent-up emotions that had built up inside of him get released and he actually seeks out sex (or equivalently hard-core physical activity) in order to achieve this kind of release because he does not always know how to 'deal' with his emotions in a rational/intellectual way - see the Burnt Bonus Chapter of (Un)Common Attraction and Chapter 5 - Sparks Fly of (Less Than) Noble Intentions.
Sex - especially with MC as I think this kind of applies to other Drake x MC pairings that I've read - is a way for him to express how he feels about MC, even (or especially if) he does not want to / feels he cannot express how he feels using words (so he lets his body do the talking) - see Chapter 2 - I've Been Waiting for You and Chapter 13 - Invidia of (Less Than) Noble Intentions.
He is just plain good at it 😆 I think several (if not most) Drake stans have the HC that before MC came along, Drake was a raging poonhound (either because he got burnt by a previous relationship, or he just feels like he does not have the time/energy/emotional capacity to invest in a serious relationship), so, he has many notches on his bedpost, and with those notches comes experience - see Crazy Bonus Chapter of (Un)Common Attraction and Chapter 3 - Hotel Room Service of (Less Than) Noble Intentions.
🍔 Food 🍔
As we all know, Drake enjoys the simple things in life, especially when it comes to food, and I kept this aspect of his characterisation in my rewrites. He loves a 99c burger, BBQ (especially ribs), basically anything you can eat with your hands, but also enjoys a good steak with fries and knows how to cook (see Chapter 2 - Sparks Fly of Sleepless in New York, Chapter 9 - Go Nuts for Cronuts of (Un)Common Attraction, Chapter 3 - Hotel Room Service and Chapter 7 - Independence Day of (Less Than) Noble Intentions).
However, I don't HC that he's a fussy eater - except when it comes to fancy hors d'oeurves at royal functions. Because let's face it - there's only so much cocktail shrimp you can eat before you start choking on it.
🕺Dancing 🕺
Anyone who's read by stuff knows that one of the biggest changes I made to canon is that Drake can dance (see Chapter 25 - When You Move and Chapter 38 - In the End of (Un)Common Attraction, as well as Chapter 4 - Showtime, Baby! and Chapter 6 - Let It Whip of Sleepless in New York).
The rationale for this is that (a) Drake grew up at court, so even if he never had dance lessons specifically, he'll have seen other people dancing, and also chances are high that Liam/Leo/Max would have roped him into dance practice, so he'd have at least a basic knowledge of the common ballroom dances (waltz, tango, foxtrot, etc.) but (b) him being Drake, he doesn't like dancing ballroom (too stuffy and formal), especially at royal events (aristos watching and judging), but he's got moves and knows how to use them 😏
This is also why I HC that Drake can speak more than just Americano - in my fics, he is fluent in French (because of his mom* and the fact that he went to school in Cordonia, which I situated between France and Italy) and Italian (because of Bastien, who I HC is from Corsica), and also understands / knows basic phrases in a variety of other European languages - if he grew up at court with the Liam, Leo, Max, etc. and travelled around all these countries, he would - at the very least! - be able to order food and drink at a restaurant in the local language (looking at you, TRR2 Italian restaurant scene 😒
*In my fics, I switched the nationalities of Drake's parents around, so Jackson is from Texas and Bianca is from Cordonia.
👖Threads 👖
Another (relatively) big change I made from canon is the way that Drake dresses. In my fics, while he 100% prefers comfortable and functional clothes (his go-to ensemble is cotton button down shirt with sleeves rolled up, distressed jeans and boots), he will dress up for formal events (even if he doesn't really go all out - he leaves his top button unbuttoned on his collar, he doesn't do ties or bowties (except very occaisonally), and he ditches his jacket the first chance he gets) - see Chapter 3 - Masquarade, Chapter 13 - Table of Exiles, Chapter 24 - When You Move, Chapter 36 - Down to the Wire and and Chapter 38 - In the End of (Un)Common Attraction.
The main rationale for this is that while he may hate court and the aristos, I cannot see him showing up to an even in jeans and a t-shirt because (a) he would not actually be allowed in, and (b) I think he has a lot more self-respect than that (also, it's physically impossible for someone to have that many jean shirts).

So I saw another post that reminded me of this little factoid and I didn't want to clutter up someone else's post with it, so I'm making my own post to tell you about it. The post in question was about making peace with the fact that people post online for attention all the time and that it's natural and normal to do that because human beings need attention! Which is all true! But it also caused me to recall a relevant fact.
Specifically, that human babies can literally die if they aren't given enough attention or affection, even if all of their physical needs are being met.
You may be surprised to learn that your needs have not significantly changed since you were a baby! The only thing that's really different now is that as an adult, you're a bit more resilient and more capable of seeking out the things you need by yourself. You still need all of the same things, you're just better able to seek them out and obtain them unassisted and can go for a little longer without them while you do that. However, you do still need to eat, drink, sleep and poop, and you still need attention and affection to be healthy.
We live in a very isolated society wherein we're expected to do more or less everything alone, and doing everything "independently" is seen as the ultimate virtue. We can blame capitalism for that; Marx wrote extensively about the isolation and separation that capitalism relies on, about the ways in which this system keeps us from seeing the touch of our fellow humans in everything we have and do. It's viewed as childish to need other people for anything, and it's really not surprising at all that the need for attention and affection is so often overlooked when we discuss things that are essential for life.
So yeah, of course people are going to post online for attention. Of course they're going to seek connection with their fellow human beings, of course they are. They need it, and so do you, and it's the most ridiculous thing in the world to pretend that you don't or that you're somehow superior or "more mature" for doing it. Some ways of getting attention are better and healthier than others, it's true, but at the core of it, seeking attention and affection, seeking connection, is just about the most human thing a person can do.
No one is an island, my dude. Not even you, and nor should you be.

I dont know if you keep tabs on her but i think something’s going on with Provy and Madison (his girlfriend). Yes, there was a lot going on with him not wearing the Pride jersey and her using their dogs account to talk about how she supports all people (and she took Provy out of the dog account bio after it happened. She also apparently had a pro-Trump picture in her vsco back in the day but took it down at some point too).
The reason why I think something’s going on is because back in April, Madison posted in Miami for her birthday and also saw her friends who moved there and her mom and brother flew out for to celebrate with her. I was really confused when I saw her stories because Provy wasn’t there at all (she still posted about him, even when everything was going down) and this had happened before he was traded. Granted, the week before, he was with her in Nashville but she didn’t even acknowledge that he wouldn’t be there for her birthday in Miami or celebrating her birthday, like how other couples would do.
The next big thing I noticed is that she went on vacation with Provy to Hawaii earlier this month and in one of the pictures on her insta story, you could see a bit of her engagement ring. Then a few days later, she had posted pictures of them together, almost confirming the engagement because the ring was more noticeable (but she didn’t say in the caption that she was engaged and she got a bunch of comments congratulating her engagement). She also posted more pictures of her in Hawaii later on this month and then today, all of those pictures from Hawaii were gone. She still has pictures of her and Provy together from earlier this year and the past. I’m a bit confused as to why she would take the Hawaii stuff down. Do you think he gave her a promise ring instead of an engagement ring and she got upset about it? Is this a quiet signal of trouble in paradise or am I reading too much into it?
The other thing that kinda throws me off a little about their relationship is the timing. She interned with the Flyers in 2018 and by All-Star Break 2019, she and Provy were on vacation together. I know it’s not a workplace violation or fireable offense for that to happen but who knows if she had secretly been messing around with him during her internship.
Frankly, I don't know anything about him beyond his religious statements, so I am solely relying on the information you have just given me here - feel free to correct me if I mess some of the facts up.
Some WAGs tend to take a bunch of their photos down every once in a while - whether it is because they don't suit their account's current aesthetic, because they no longer think they look good in them, I have no idea, but it certainly isn't an odd occasion. In this case, it seems like it might not have been an engagement ring and they didn't want any rumors about their alleged engagement to spread on the internet, or maybe she posted them without his knowledge and when he found out he told her that he doesn't want their engagement to be this public. I really don't have any other reasonable scenarios that would explain why she deleted them so suddenly.
They probably were messing around with each other already during her internship since it was the place they met and interacted first (I seriously don't believe someone, let alone an NHL player, would be willing to wait with f*cking someone just to refrain from breaking job regulations) - once again, this is a normal thing to happen basically everywhere.
Personally, I don't see that much weird stuff in this. The same stuff and even significantly worse one (ask Lauren Kyle about the McDavid cheating video or Svetlana about the entire Nichushkin and dr*gged girl scandal) happens to every other NHL couple.

Hagging Out 🧺 When Life Takes Away Your Pears ...
When this month's Hagging Out theme was announced, I had no idea what I wanted to do for it at first. But then my Husband and I were driving back from WalMart one day and I spied a Pear Tree in someone's front yard and I was hooked on the idea of doing something with Pears; I thought maybe a nice Tart, or something that I hadn’t tried before.
There was a Pear tree out at my own family’s old farm, but going out there could cause some problems- especially since I’ve estranged myself from my family. There was a Pear Tree out at my Husband's old family farm that I knew I could harvest from instead, however. So I kept bothering him to take me out there- and I almost got to on our way back from the Music Festival ... But it just never worked out ... And it never worked out ... And it never worked out; when it finally did, we got all the way out there only to discover that not only was the farm an absolute wreck, but this year's double late Spring frost had killed all the blossoms.
No Pears for me. But I didn’t leave empty handed, however. And what did I get lucky and accidentally stumble across out there? The fact that my Husband's family farm also had a giant Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) tree on the property, right next to the driveway; he hated the thing and couldn't understand why I got so giddy about it (though to be fair, if it weren't for @goadthings / @pagan-stitches posting about their own Walnut adventures, I'd've very likely never known or understood).
Tumblr media
So what do you do when Hagging Out's approaching quickly and life takes away your Pears? You make Black Walnut Pie ... Well ... Except I ran into a bit of an issue with that, actually; after all the crushing, and hammering, and digging that I did, in the end I wound up with only half a cup of Black Walnut meat- a far cry from the full 1 cup that I actually needed for the Pie.
When my husband took me out to the lake to do my Offerings on his birthday, however, he stumbled across an absolute gold mine of Bur Oak (Quercus Macrocarpa) Acorns; Bur Oak Acorns in particular have been used as a food and medicine source by the Ponca (Ppáⁿkka), Omaha (Umoⁿhoⁿ), Cheyenne, Winnebago (Hochungra), Dakota (Dakhóta) and Lakota (Lakȟóta), Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), Menominee (Omǣqnomenēwak), Ojibwa (Ojibwe) and Chippewa (Baawiting Anishinaabeg), and Pawnee (Chatiks si chatiks) tribes for centuries. So I decided to throw those into the pie, too (while still leaving my Husband enough to plant- an easy feat since he brought a whole Pie Plate home).
After processing the Acorns, however ... The texture was wrong. I realized it wouldn't really work like I wanted it to. I didn't nix the plan, though, because I still wanted to use the Acorn meat; I didn’t process them for nothing, after all ... But it did take me far longer than it should have to remember that I literally live right beneath four huge old growth Pecan Trees and have a never ending stream of the dang things. So I opted to make up the other half cup's difference with some of the remainder of last year's dried Pecan harvest since this year's hadn't started dropping yet.
My best friend @justletmebeokay formally dubbed the Pie the "Oklahoma Hobbit" when they saw how much nonsense I was putting into it ... But lemme tell you ... It fits. In fact, I can't think of anything else, after putting in all that effort and eating the thing finally, that could possibly fit it more.
Tumblr media
I wound up roughly grinding the Acorn meat into chunks and soaked them for 2 days, draining off the water and replacing it every day to remove the tannins as guides instructed. But I left the Black Walnut and Pecan meat as it came out of the shell (which was pretty hapdash; I'm not great at nut cracking, as I discovered, ha. And since Pecans are significantly easier to crack than Black Walnuts ... Well, you can imagine how that game played out). Then I just refrigerated it until I needed it.
The recipe wanted me to put the nuts over the bottom of the crust, then pour the filling in. So I sprinkled over the Pecans and Black Walnuts- but the Acorn Meat got put into the filling itself and poured over. Then it all got baked at 375°f for roughly an hour, and cooled for another 2 or 3 before I got too impatient and couldn't wait another moment longer.
The Black Walnut meat is so creamy and melts in your mouth. The Burk Oak Acorn meat is soft, but has a nice texture to it that you'd expect to be kinda gritty but just kinda mushes well instead. And the Pecan gives it a nice crunch you didn't know it needed until you got it. And between the Lemon Juice, Brown Sugar, and Maple Syrup, and all the nuts? Somehow the thing comes out with a hint of ... Almost a slight Bourbon flavor that's just ... Perfect- if confusing.
There's a lot going on flavor wise and texturally, but absolutely none of it is overwhelming or overpowers any other element of the Pie ... It's just perfect. And it's hilarious to me because honestly? I hate Nuts, and I hate Pies ... I shouldn't've liked this. But yet I do. And if it weren't so much effort? I'd probably make this a regular thing.
Considering it took me a whole week to gather and make, though ... I think I'm ok with it just being a @msgraveyarddirt / @graveyarddirt special for Hagging Out 🤣

Song used: Frost by Solatrus
Song commentary:
Solatrus:
(original commentary)
Anyway, man, where to begin on this one? My most famous song, one of the proudest moments of my musical career, etc. etc. I could go on.
But I’ll start with the roots.
Frost didn’t start off as the theme for the Land of Frost and Frogs. It started off as the theme for the Land of Thought and Flow. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post on this song, you really need to look at this image to understand what went through my head.
Remember that image? Yeah. Okay. Now then, go listen to the first 30 seconds of Frost while staring at that image.
Got it?
Good.
That’s how it started.
And then Andrew asked me to use it in the animation and it got renamed. But, considering half of the song no longer fit the new theme, I rewrote the second half to include a lot more percussive instruments to give that icy feeling.
Frankly, I’m not sure what’s more well known, the really ethereal arpeggio that opens the song, or the industrial drums that drive it.
(commentary redux)
I can’t really make a post about this song without mentioning the above flash animation and the following image:
Tumblr media
Because, really, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be explaining a significant amount of the story behind this song.
This image of Terezi standing in the Land of Thought and Flow is what inspired the opening arpeggio for Frost. The whole Land’s environment is fascinating to me, and I simply had to write a theme for that medium world. As I have probably mentioned, my preference in writing music is for settings, which gives me my really ambient sound, contrary to other musicians on the team who prefer to write melodical songs describing emotions and people.
I ended up realizing an industrial kit would work extremely well for an unusual drum beat, particularly to contrast the incredibly ethereal sound I had already established. Hell, this song is so ambient people have a hard time telling what the melody is… and no, it’s not the french horn. :D
Eventually the arping bassline comes in and all is good.
Anyway, I was really hoping that Terezi’s land would be explored more, but that never happened. I ended up getting contacted by Andrew to feature this in the comic, and I was really ecstatic. My music went from a few dozen people listening to it regularly, before I joined the team, to probably a few thousand after Volume 5. And then with this feature, I jumped to having hundreds of thousands of people listening to one of my songs. And it’s grown since then.
That was a really mind blowing, and really awesome. I’ve had very few proud moments in my life more worthy than this one.
After the feature, though, I scrambled to improve the song’s quality. I changed around a few things in the first half (most notably making the whole mix a bit quieter), and pushed the melody a bit more forward. The second half, I basically swapped out this very strange sounding piano improvisation I did with the percussion (vibes, glockenspiel) instruments and a saw pad for lead. The replacements work incredibly well for trying to give an icy sound, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to doing songs that are this ambient and minimalist, because my composing skills have progressed significantly since then, and I require much more complexity in my work. Also, now that this song is actually over two years old (for me), I’ve noticed how flawed it is.
But nonetheless, this is probably one of my best songs, and it’s well loved by the Homestuck fandom. That’s good enough for me.
Author commentary:
Charles Dutton had a respectable acting career, and I'm sure he said many memorable things, to whoever might have been listening. But he didn't say this. Shocking, I know. What's with all these misattributed quotes? Did I explain this? We've just covered a big stretch of story which, thanks to Vriska, has been heavy with notes about crassly misappropriating certain kinds of content—words, deeds, entire story events—and slapping someone else's name on those things to retroactively reassign credit and reshape the way the content is perceived. Almost a cyclical contamination of the content, an attempt to confuse and misdirect by repurposing what is already known. Combine this element with the misquotes that go back to Act 1, as well as some other things like the tendency to rename pets, and it seems to me we have the basic constituents of what you might call a "theme." What is the nature of the theme? What does it mean? Do I need to tell you everything?? Maybe it's time for you to put that noggin of yours to work and come up with some of your own answers. I already know what it means. My boy Dutton over there knows what it means, Look at him. He's tickled as fuck that you can't figure it out. Laughing his ass off at your ignorance. Good, I'm glad you feel ashamed, it's character-building. What I will say is, the latter part of the quote, about solid flesh and dew, that's Shakespeare. The rest of it I just made up. You can kind of tell, right? None of the other poetic excerpts had original material woven into the misquoted text, but Jade always was the pattern breaker of the group. Customizing the false quote with specifics relevant to this moment—the forge, winter skin, bedsheets (Jade's on a bed in this Flash), irons in the fire—makes it better suited to her land intro. It's also sort of retro-fitted to the Shakespeare line, expanding on the idea that a blanket of snow is like a layer of flesh, which can melt upon the introduction of a heat source. Like the first human to appear in a frozen wasteland, or the dormant volcano she brought with her, which she has the ability to stoke. There's…a lot going on here??? The point is, then I slapped Dutton's name on it for some insane reason, and called it a day.
Another land intro, more scenery porn and haunting music. I don't usually subscribe to the idea that these books absolutely murder the souls of the animations by making them static, but these environmental pieces really do feel vacant without the music. There was some magic in getting to know these places for the first time in the Flash format, and I think this was one that really sold that feeling in particular. The "Frogs" in the LOFAF title remained garbled right up until this moment, to keep you guessing. Finally the time is right to show it. Is it a stunning reveal? Not really. But censoring it until now lets us know it's a significant bit of information, and the moment it's revealed kind of signals something about the mystery word. That signal is something like, "Hey, it's time for us to start getting serious about frogs and meditate upon their deeply significant cosmological role in the story." The Space player is all about creating space, i.e. the universe itself, which is one big frog, so she's all about frogs, breeding them and then deploying one special frog into Skaia via the Forge. We've finally crossed that threshold, and so has Jade. It's frogtime.
The "pollutant" of Jade's land is thick snow cover, brought about by something in the general department of nuclear fallout. Her bedsheet pattern has stylistically flipped to green, with the recurring sun icon conspicuously assuming this hue, in direct reference to—brace yourselves—The Green Sun. I know, the symbology is getting pretty hard to interpret, but hang in there. Much like Bec's head on top of the frog ruins reminds us of Bec Noir's sudden domination over these realms, flipping the familiar sun sigil to green also Signals that the Green Sun and its infinite energy supply are fully presiding over events now as well. It has the whole session, and this planet in particular, on lock. The green Bec-powers have always been associated with a sort of radioactive energy, so that would seem to be the impetus for this wintry nuclear fallout that's enveloped this planet, which is otherwise covered with banyan trees and frozen lakes full of frogs in icy stasis. LOFAF is the planet that goes through the most dramatic change when its ecological problems are solved. It quickly transforms into a tropical, swampy planet rife with all kinds of amphibious life ready to be harvested for cosmic breeding duties. It also seems to be the most trivial cleanup challenge, since all you have to do to get rid of the snow is light the Forge, making the planet warm enough so the snow melts. Jade does not appear to have much trouble doing exactly that later in this act. But it probably doesn't hurt that she gets some help from another Space player who already did it.
