O U R P R E S E N T F U T U R I S T
By Karen Page
“Mr. Stark, thank you for joining me this morning.”
The man himself, Anthony Edward Stark, sits across from me, legs crossed. His suit is neatly pressed, his hair perfect. There is a faint bruise along his jaw, but considering his latest fight is available on YouTube, I have no need to ask. He is riding on an immense victory of another kind, the revised Sokovia Accords having just been successfully pushed through the UN.
“The pleasure is all yours,” he snarks, but a quick grin that quirks at the edge of his mouth tells me it is in jest. The words are flirty, but his eyes stay either on mine or on his phone, which fills up with more messages every minute - I feel almost guilty keeping him, a feeling that I assure you is unfamiliar. It is almost surreal to be with the man who, for better or worse, ushered in the era of public superheroes in which we now live. I tell him so.
He doesn’t look surprised, instead giving me a wry, self-deprecating grin. “That sounds cool, doesn’t it? Really, I just can’t keep my damn mouth shut.”
“You have said a lot of controversial things over the years.”
Tony laughs, and it is contagious. I can’t help but smile back. “Yeah, well put me down as on the straight and narrow, will you?”
The Accords, I know, have to be a sore point, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t mention them. “You were the first signer of the Sokovia Accords. Do you ever regret the ‘straight and narrow,’ as you put it?”
Tony straightens a little, but his cool confidence remains. “The Accords have been subjected to a very thorough revising process, managed by two people I’d trust with my life.” He pauses, and I let him. “There are a lot of things I won’t say,” he tells me finally, “but no, I don’t regret it. We have a responsibility, and however we can fulfill it… well…”
“What do you mean?”
Tony thinks, then a soft smile crosses his face. “If we have one hand on the wheel,” he says, a level to his tone that makes me think he is quoting someone, “we can still steer.”
I decide to act on my hunch. “Your words?”
“Good catch,” he laughs. “No, the words of a woman far wiser than me.” He fumbles a little with his hands, twisting a plain, black ring on his fifth finger.
“And how is Miss Romanoff?” My hunches have not failed me yet. “Is she in the city?”
I am asking, of course, about his famous partner, the Black Widow. After a very public kiss on the tails of the Accords announcement, the media has been going crazy to discover the hows, whens, and whys of the whole affair. Details of their relationship are extremely rare, so I resolve to tread carefully.
“That’s classified,” he jokes, and though it is said as a joke, I also think it was the most serious thing he has said in the interview thus far. I would bet money that this man would not reveal his girlfriend’s location, even under the most extreme torture.
It’s clear that this line of investigation is not going to go anywhere, so I switch tracks. “How are these Accords different from the original documents, Mr. Stark?”
He just raises an eyebrow. “Read them, if you want to know,” he brushes off. Then he leans forward. “I care about my team - we’re gonna stick together because you never know when we’ll be needed. And that would be impossible with the way the Accords were written before the revisions.”
I nod. This isn’t new information. Many suspect that Tony Stark takes every opportunity to tell the public that the Avengers are needed, whole and ready to protect the Earth, so that his lost team members will know they are welcome back whenever they are ready.
“And are the Avengers ready? If they are needed?”
I don’t know why I expected Stark to take a while to answer this question, but it surprises me when he abandons his glances at his still-blowing-up phone, looking me straight in the eyes. I don’t even have written notes from this portion of the interview. I was completely captured by the man in front of me. He seems larger than life.
“The Avengers will always come together to defend the Earth. No matter how difficult it is. That’s the end game.” He leans back, and I do the same, released from that intensity, letting out an obvious exhale. Tony Stark just smirks, and in that moment, I realize that the Black Widow must be the only one who could ever handle him.
Still, he grins at me, and I smile back, immediately at ease when he wants me to be. “But my job is to make it as easy as possible. Thank you, Ms. Page.”
I know a dismissal when I hear one. And, without protest (which is very unlike me), I stand up and go.

Sorry this is gonna be a bit of a rant since it’s something I’ve had strong feelings about since joining the AG/TASM fanfic part of the internet, and you’ve provided me a great opportunity to talk about it.
As a trans person, I am BEGGING fanfic writers to stop writing Marauders stuff. I’ve seen so many people defend it with “separate art from the artist” but like it or not they are still supporting JKR. Separating art from the artist only really works when the artist can’t profit from it. She has done SO MUCH harm to trans people and particularly trans youth in the UK and it’s so fucking disheartening and gives me such an ick when I see TASM writers also write for Marauders because it truly comes across as “I love and support the trans community except when it comes to this because I like it.”.
Even if you ignore the transphobia and holocaust denial (YES IM SERIOUS, she’s denied parts of the holocaust at LEAST twice and she literally did it a second time the other day), the original writing is so fucking problematic. Things just off the top of my head being;
The goblins being stereotypes of Jewish people
The fucking racism with characters like Cho Chang and Kingsley Shacklebolt
The last Fantastic Beasts movie’s plot literally being trying to make WW2 and the holocaust happen
This point needs to be taken with a grain of salt since this was some bullshit Joanne said after the books came out, but werewolves in the universe being meant to represent people with aids. Which is so fucking awful considering one of the two werewolves was attacked by the other as a CHILD
The most ironic part of this is that if Andrew is truly the person he presents himself as, he would probably fucking despise being associated with HP, even if it is just a fancast. But yeah all this to say fuck JKR, fuck Marauders fans but also thank you so much Katie for that last anon answer because I genuinely don’t see that enough in this corner of the internet.
Even Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter himself, has spoken out against her and continues to loudly support the LGBTQ+ communities. When your own beloved Harry doesn't even want to stand by your side, you should know you fucked up. Sadly, she does not, and instead leans harder into her bigotry and hatred.
I've always been someone who is very loud and opinionated when I see things that I disagree with, which I know can rub some people the wrong way, but fuck it. I don't like to whisper about my issues on the sidelines, I like to confront the problem head on by being very clear about where I stand and how I feel. I'm not gonna sit around and let someone align me with JKR just because I'm writing a stupid werewolf and Peter Parker fic that exactly 5 people are reading lol. It's not even a popular fic like get out of my asks jfc. Esp when I can tell this person has not read a single sentence of my story and is completely basing their judgements on my header image of AG's face next to a wolf gif.
In this past week I have seen both a Steven Harrington werewolf au and a Daredevil werewolf au cross my dash. Do we think they're getting called out for supporting HP?? No. Because their actors weren't "fan casted" as something years ago. Fan casts don't even mean anything! There was never a movie about them. AG was never casted or played this role. It's literally nothing but a bunch of fans agreeing that they like his look for a fictional character.
Anyway, I'm also ranting back at you haha. You can rant to me anytime. I love a good rant and I agree with you 100%.
Werewolves were not created by JKR. Andrew Garfield has nothing to do with Harry Potter. Don't make make snap judgments about a person's character based on a picture you saw. Support your trans community. Don't be dick.
And, if they actually read my werewolf au, they would see that it's literally about learning to overcome your own hatred and biases of people different from you and learning to love those you were taught to hate. Crazy concept, I know! 🙄😉

Fisk in Echo
Tumblr media
Wanted to make a long post detailing my personal thoughts on Fisk's representation in the Echo series. I won't comment a lot on the series as a whole. It was good. Not gonna call it my new favorite show or say it breathed new life into an MCU that seems like it wants to die. But a good watch. Even if I did hope it would break more of the MCU mold with its MA rating.
But Fisk! Put Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Grant Fisk on my screen, and I'm there, bells on.
This is just... a dumb long post I had to write for me. You can read it or parts of it if you want.

1x01
Willie on Willie Violence
They're never gonna tells us why MCU Fisk had Ronin kill Maya's dad. Stop asking. They're not gonna say. No, they're not gonna tell us why Clint did what Fisk asked either. I said stop asking.
They really reduced what could have been an important relationship between Fisk and Willie into literally nothing. Per the comics, he was Fisk's first friend ever, his enforcer. Nothing? NOTHING?! Also they changed his last name from Lincoln to Lopez. (Apparently, heroes can only be born from a married, two-parent household? Didn't know the MCU was Catholic.) "How much agency can you remove from one man?" MCU asks and answers.
I'm not saying the comics knock it out of the park with motive. The reason Fisk kills him is still vague. (Meaning the MCU had the chance to pick up the slack but just left it there.) Vague is still better than ignoring it entirely.
I assume comic Fisk was betrayed by him in some way. And while it doesn't take much provocation for him to kill his employees, I like to assume the motive was a little more substantial for a friend.
This is why these series need to be treated like television (instead of long movies) and given more than a handful of episodes.

Maya vs Daredevil
A pretty good fight scene, definitely. Even if it is intercut with special effects instead of practical effects. I've seen people make that complaint, and it's valid. I can't decide if the inclusion of a fight between them is meant to be a bone thrown to Daredevil fans, a nod to their fight in the DD comics with Echo's origin, or both. 🤔 But since this is a post about Fisk and I'm a Fisk/Matt shipper, moving on.
Ehehehehehehe~ 😈
"None of my men have ever held their own with him like that. You did better than even I expected."
So... in preparation for DD: Born Again, I have been (and honestly, still am) unsure of where the canon will be coming from. Disney recently pushed the Netflix-verse as legitimate, but I know it has to have a point where that will break off. There's no way it can be a 1:1 continuation. So while we can be a little more bold injecting DD canon into the MCU, I'm not getting carried away yet.
Anyway, the uncertainty of Born Again has made my shipper heart wonder where/when Fisk and Matt's relationship will be. Until Echo, I questioned if it would be scorched earth, start all over, meet for the first time again. But Fisk's line establishes he is at least aware of Daredevil. They have some form of history. I'm interested and anxiously waiting for specifics to unfold. ✪ω✪
In the meantime, it's nice having confirmation that both Fisk and Matt survived Thanos's Snap and existed in those 5 years. 😈 Not only does that play into the hand of my current fanfic, it doesn't outright contradict it either. In fact, it's kind of fun imagining an AU where Matt works with Fisk and then laying it over this Echo scene. Daredevil just so happens to be at a location stalking Fisk's competition? On the same night Fisk sends in his daughter*? Hm. Suspect. Certainly he's not ensuring her safety by sending no-kill boy. 🤔🧐 Ignore me. I'm making an AU of my AU over here. 😂
*[I actually have a hard time letting go of Fisk's role as an adoptive father in the comics versus "uncle" in the shows. I can't let this go. Maybe even... won't let this go?]
......................................................................................................................
1x04
2008
So here's a very small nod that even I missed at first. In Maya's 2007 past (in Hawkeye and Echo), she is attending a regular, non-deaf school. Her dad says it's because they can't afford better. (Surely there are programs with grants? Whatever.) Now cut to 2008. Fisk picks her up from school, showing that she is on his radar and he is taking a more active role in her life. A testament to that? Maya is now wearing the uniform (with crest) of a private school.
Tumblr media
Fisk isn't the best at love, and there's no denying that. (Look at Richard's life.) But it also can't be denied that he immediately took an interest in Maya and improving her situation. He loves in his own way.
-
Anyway... so this scene confirmed with its "2008" that Fisk has been active in New York for yeeeears. Literally since the beginning of the MCU itself. I won't say it changes a lot since DD 1x01 mentions the Chitauri Invasion of 2012 and how Fisk grew parts of his empire with construction companies rebuilding from it. But confirmation is nice, ya know. And it shows that even though Fisk's name was unspoken in 2015, he had already been in some form of power for at least 7 years.
-
And then, of course, the whole "beat up the ice cream man" thing. 🍿 I mean, again, Fisk's methods are not always right, but he will protect those he cares about and punish those who hurt them. And he will be excessive about it. RIP Anatoly. 💐
I see people, even writers, make excuses for Maya's action in this scene, for kicking the man. "Children watch and copy everything." Sometimes, yes, but children know the difference between right and wrong. Children don't just mimic bad actions. What I'm saying is I'm not going to pretend Maya didn't have a touch of dark side in her with or without Fisk.
There's no denying she is much darker and more ruthless than her comic counterpart. My mouth was quite agape to see her hurt the woodpecker and then lie about it. (There's a certain classification of people who hurt animals as children. 🤔) Not even Fisk was prepared for that part of her. Calling for another jacket, telling her not to be afraid. He thought of how other children would react and got it wrong. He wasn't wrong to think she would have an aptitude for bloodshed in her adult life.
I love Fisk calling her out in this episode, that she always knew what he was and that she killed for him without compunction. There was no remorse in the flashbacks. Per Fisk's own words: "You knew what you were part of at every turn. All the people you killed for me, did you plead for their lives?" There was no disgust towards Fisk until she found out he had her father killed. One of the (I think) producers of the show says he considers Maya a villain. Aight. I think she's more of an anti-hero now, but I wouldn't call MCU Maya an outright hero, I don't think. Remains to be seen what she does with herself.

DD S3 Fisk really found an MO he could live with. lol. No one else can but...
This old man is adorable wanting to have weekly dinners with his daughter. (✿◠‿◠) You definitely leave a girl wondering where Vanessa (even a recast Vanessa) is, but okay. Now invite your other three kids on Sunday. Pfft.
I can't believe the MCU made Fisk switch out his beloved Bach for Schubert's Ständchen. 🤣🎧 (That's okay. I actually like it more. Shh.)

The Man in Red
Is it such a silly stupid thing for me to grin about the fact that the first time we "officially" see Fisk in the series, he is wearing red? Yes it is silly and stupid. Imma grin anyway. 🙃

Sir, that is... that is Daredevil's color. Sir. Sir! 😆 (Fisk said, "Daredevil wore white in the comics. Something must be done.")

Fisk Not Learning ASL
Okay so...
I think this is one of my two big sticking points in Echo's writing for him. I've already ranted to my friend about it over several texts. Fisk spoke more sign language in Hawkeye than he did in this series, and it's not like the why is some big mystery. It's sloppy writing, right? Right. It's a shortcut to contrast Maya's family in Fisk versus her biological family. Writers were like, "What's a quick, easy way we can show Maya's family does care for her more than Fisk even though they abandoned her after her mother and father died and offer nothing for it but an, 'I'm sorry'? Ooh, I know!"
Chula hated Willie enough to blame him for Taloa's death and cast him out at the cost of losing her granddaughter. "I'm sorry." Henry left her in NYC after Willie was killed, even knowing he was leaving her with Fisk. "I'm sorry." But everyone still speaks fluent sign language after 20 years, so they're better than Fisk. Did you get that? We want to make it very, very clear so you get that. 🙄
I have trouble conveying my frustration with this writing choice in words. At the very least, it's "tell, don't show." I don't need it spelled out that ordinary people are better than a serial murder crime boss. Neon sign flashing "Duh!" No one needed that spelled out!
And It was bad enough how blatant they were being, okay, but when they had Maya mention it outright at the end, word-for-word conclusion, oof. It's so... novice league. I almost get secondhand embarrassment from their ham-fisted delivery. Geez.
This man speaks Mandarin, Japanese, and some Spanish. For personal interest. He could learn ASL. You can believe the absolute worst in him and still believe he'd learn it as a method of manipulation, to make Maya think he cared. You actually have a larger burden of proof coming up with any reason why he wouldn't learn. "He doesn't care enough about her." Where's that judging cat picture saying "Pathetic"? I mean, I can sit here all day pointing over and over again at the fact he spoke more ASL in Hawkeye. So he... regressed... between series because he cares... less for her now?
Wait... he suffered a gunshot to the head. You don't think... *gasp* Maya hit the exact spot of his brain that held sign language? It's all coming together.
Uuuuuuuuuuuugh. We all have those bad writing moments we just ignore, and this is one of mine. Echo wanted a villain but they were too afraid of humanizing the one they yoinked from Daredevil. Get on their level, you cowards.
No one will ever touch your perfection, DD S1, my beloved.

Sunday Thursday Dinner
Do not let this man into your home. 🚫 He will look at your family photos and identify all of your weak spots.

jk I do very much enjoy Fisk's wide wandering eyes as he walks around the house, observing. It's so good. It reminds me (if anyone else knows the overlap here) of Vincent's character in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Goren goes into a room and immediately studies any picture or book or object he can, learning everything about a person. It's exactly what Fisk was doing here, even if for reasons less than wholesome. I love when you can see the wheels turning in a character's brain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can appreciate a subtle flipping of authority between dinners. Fisk at the head of the table with Maya to his right and then the reverse of that. Nice.
Before this, if you said, "Yeah, I think Wilson Fisk would have a floral print picnic basket," you were LYING! No one could have predicted this bag. No one! You might counter with, "Yeah, but he didn't pick it out. A goon just put everything in there and handed it to him." Would you do that? Would you risk your life handing the Kingpin of all crime up the east coast a floral bag? You are so brave. You will be missed.
-
So there actually are a few bits of the show that make me think, "Okay, maybe Echo writers did watch Daredevil." It's The Little Things (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ When he brought wine, then Maya poured it out and he asked, "What happened to the Lafite?" I was ready to go "Rawr nooo. Fisk's character is supposed to be almost wine illiterate as a nod to his poor, uncultured origin." But wow, they saved it with his very next line being, "It came highly recommended." Okay, Echo. Echo, okay. For this, you get a point.
-
Tumblr media
Handing the knife to Maya, so... mwah. 💋 It's arrogant, sure, and I'd be lying to say I hated that. But more than that, Fisk really is good at reading and predicting people. Forget muscle strength, THAT is his greatest asset. And he's not wrong. Maya doesn't (then or later) hurt or try to kill him again. He knows what it's like to let emotion take hold in the moment. That's why he understands and dismisses Maya shooting him. But he also knows she has a clearer head now. He feels no danger from her, knows she doesn't really want him dead. And he's right.

"I can't remember a time... when I haven't loved you like a daughter."
I'm glad someone finally said it. Boo on the uncle/niece bit. Not to mention how many motifs of this series hit better and harder with a father/daughter relationship. Tsk tsk.
-
An interesting exchange here...
Maya: "You isolated me. Told me you were the only one I could trust. But it was all a lie. Even with these contacts, you got them because you didn't care enough to learn to sign." Fisk: "I was there for you!"
✨He is not wrong.✨ Obligatory groan at the ASL mention and... He's not wrong. Like I mentioned earlier, Maya's family abandoned her. Literally the only person who tried to keep up with her was Bonnie (angel), and Maya shunned her. (Which wasn't Fisk's influence because we see her ignoring Bonnie's texts before Fisk had a hand in swaying her one way or the other.) Maya was isolated because her family abandoned her or she cut them off. And Fisk. was. there. for. her. Without him, she seemed intent on ruining her life and getting arrested.
Granted, you'd be justified saying she wouldn't have been in that particular spiral without Fisk killing her father. (Too bad we'll never know why he did it.) But Willie could have died in a manner completely unrelated to Fisk, and her family would have reacted in the same way, not reaching out or being ignored when they do. Do you see what I'm saying? Fisk legitimately was the only person in Maya's life besides her father.
-
I think about... the people Fisk has told the story of his father's death to, speaking as if this is a true continuation of Daredevil. That would be Wesley (not shown but a given). Vanessa when he wants her to understand him and his past. And Dex, as he pulls the man back from the brink in an effort to make Dex see their similarity and how no one else could understand him like Fisk. (Other people know about it, of course, but I'm concerned with those whom he trusted to tell.)
It seems like the motivation swings between intimate trust and manipulation. Or it could be both with Dex. Honestly, who can read Fisk's mind with absolute clarity? Either way, it's a very small group. It's not insignificant that he tells Maya.
-
Love Fisk doubling down on "Maya won't kill me." Tripling down? First the knife. Then leaving himself completely unguarded with the door open while she has a gun. Then giving her the hammer and daring her. It feels less arrogant than with the knife though. He still knows she won't kill him, but it also feels less... certain here. But I like him using it as a challenge, as a "Now or never." Kill him already, or stop threatening it every five minutes. Very Fisk of him. 👌
I can't... articulate what his choice of words means to me, but they clutch at my chest as he says, "Free me!" Killing him will not only free Maya to move forward in her life, it will free him. Babygirl, how much do you hate this life you're in? ಥ_ಥ
I think I need to make another Daredevil/Echo gifset. With Fisk here saying, "Free me!" against him daring Matt in 3x13, "Come on, kill me!" (Wilson, do we need to put you on a watch?)

I like this scene. No real reason. But it is nice to watch socially handicapped Wilson try and conduct conversation like a normal person. Helping Chula pick up the mail.
I am VERY interested in a blink-and-you-miss-it line from him here. After Chula mentions losing her daughter.

I am gnawing at my keyboard. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! Is it referencing something we should already know? Is it a nod to something yet to come, something Born Again will expand on? Is he just talking about how he "lost" Maya? Is it about his father? Is Vanessa dead in this universe??? What does it meeeeeeean?!?!?!?!

⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
Attempted Murder Spree
My second big beef.
I'm not gonna argue whether Fisk would kill people unconnected to his criminal underworld in order to hurt the ones that are. No, I think they got that part pretty accurate. Evidence abounds in comics and Netflix-verse. If he wants to kill Chula and Bonnie to punish Maya, I'd only ask why he didn't go ahead and round up Henry. This plan totally plays. (Actually, if we used only existing Hawkeye content for this MCU Fisk, it would be... less likely. He didn't threaten or go after Kate at all to get at Eleanor.)
What I find ridiculous is the notion he would attempt a massacre of the entire festival. Uh... what? Someone find me a single instance (comic or screen) where Fisk attempts such widespread death and destruction of innocents. By that, I mean with innocents as the intended target and not collateral damage.
When he bombed the Russians in DD 1x05, people were hurt, but from fallout, not intent. Though there are injuries, I'm trying to think if we get more than one confirmation of death. I don't doubt there may have been more, but... And you may want to point at the attack on The Bulletin, but, though terrifying, only three people died. And I'd posit the extra two were most likely to obfuscate that Jasper Evans was the real target. Unless we want to say Bullseye (Bulls-eye) missed a dozen times.
Anyway, I think this over-the-top plot point is us witnessing an MCU-ification of Fisk. Something they need to quash NOW. It's like... gah, they admit they want his character and want him to be a smaller scale villain, a "street-level Thanos," but they still want the high stakes of "aliens are killing citizens en masse." Well, no. You don't get it both ways. And it shouldn't be that way. Smaller scale means a smaller scale. Reduce everything but write it well enough that you still get that same feeling of anxiety and dread.
The episode plays exactly the same without that bit of OOC overreach. (All it did was give Henry and Biscuits something to do in the climax.) Like... literally. You can cut those scenes without affecting anything. Does that sound like good writing? No. Just like with the ASL bit, I think the burden lies on writers explaining WHY he would do this instead of acting like it's obvious and natural. And just because Maya turned him down? He'll massacre dozens of people? I, for one, am not convinced.
⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘
The Trauma of It All
I already talked a bit about Fisk's experience being "healed" by Maya in this post. (By the way, was I the only one expecting it to heal his eye too? Ah well.) I could talk more on my annoyance of super powers that just do whatever the writers want them to in any given situation. But I breathe, center myself, and appreciate what I have been given.
I was pretty disappointed in Fisk's writing the whole episode (see point directly above) until this point. They got me back on board. They made a good decision with this final conflict and NOT having it be a physical one. While it makes Echo's writing feel all over the board, dehumanizing Fisk and the humanizing him again, looking at this one aspect feels so good for his character, for anyone who enjoyed his character before this series. Echo, you get... two points.
Visually, I love it so much. Except for the part where I want to take in every single detail of Fisk's childhood bedroom, but they cranked the fog machine too high. I see he is a Yankees fan (But what about those Mets, Spider-Man?) There's a toy helicopter in the window, a toy airplane on the chest of drawers, and a picture of a plane. Was anyone going to tell me little Wilson likes aircrafts or... There's a jar of marbles, jar of little animals. Very normal, cute room for a boy. Despite the disrepair and decay in the walls. This feels like it leans so much closer to Fisk's outright childhood poverty in the comics than just being lower class in DD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OBVIOUSLY, I *chef's kiss* at the wonderful homage to the white wall/painting. High school English teachers could have a field day examining the symbolism. In DD 1x03, Fisk says the painting makes him feel "alone," and that emotion is perfectly captured here. We hear his parents on the other side of the wall, in the other room, but Wilson is alone in his bedroom, wanting it to stop.
I hate/love the despair and pain Fisk has being back here. I would never trauma dump on the internet. I'll just say Wilson Fisk continues to be a very relatable character for me. He is, all joking aside, very special to me, personally. And moments like this only strengthen the love I have for him. Also makes me want to slap around Fisk haters who refuse to take the time to understand him. Bah.
Tumblr media
A small thing I like is that Fisk seems able to fully understand Maya in here. Whether because he just, ya know, understands ASL (she unlocked the sign language he forgot since Hawkeye ◉o◉), or because thought transcends speech inside his head, you decide.

Obviously excited for Mayor Fisk arc. There are a couple comic plots I've wanted to see Daredevil explore, and that's probably at the top of the list. (There is also Fisk and Matt working together in prison, but I'm less than hopeful we'll ever see it on screen.) I have so many questions about Fisk being mayor.
Do you think he'll still offer the job of Deputy Mayor to Matt??? Can he win honestly, or will he cheat? Can they show Fisk stealing an election without referencing ANY current events in the real world? Will the election be at the start of the series or mid-point, or will they save it (hopefully not) for a finale? Will they use this to set up future plots with Fisk?
I'm all abuzz with anticipation.
Only... over a year to Daredevil: Born Again! ╰(*°▽°*)╯
......................................................................................................................
On the very off chance you read all of this post or skimmed it and didn't see me address something you're curious of my opinion on, idk, just let me know. I'll ramble all day. Clearly.

8 shows to get to know me better tagged by @saintemiliosandoz
(got this and was like, bestie, do i even know 8 shows?)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: does this even count as getting to know me better? Either way I have nothing to say for myself, there's no excuse
Elementary CBS: this show fucked so severely and on the one hand it deserved way, way more hype than That One British Show but on the other hand I'm so so glad it didn't get the insane rabid awfulness That Fucking British Show bred. Also Lucy Liu <3
NBC Hannibal: Yeah.
Shameless: I've seen this all the way through like,,, at least twice? But now I can never rewatch it again bc I will never be able to see Lip Gallagher without thinking about that "my roommate said he'd be worth the yeast infection" tweet (side note: Cristina, I think that really cute waitress at Ayat heard me loudly quoting that tweet when we did byob with Emily that one time and she literally never looked at me the same afterwards.)
Daredevil: ever since they announced they were cancelling this to create Disney+, my hatred for Disney bubbled over and I have never watched a single Marvel series ever since, I refuse to.
Killing Eve: I haven't seen like the last 3 episodes and I am living in the most blissful ignorance where the series ends exactly as I wanted it to
That Netflix original Hollywood: what can I say, I am not immune to a Ryan Murphy miniseries (honorable mention to Pose which was objectively better but also I haven't finished the last season)
(I am literally going through my netflix and hulu history now bc like damn there is no way I only love 7 TV shows ahdkjasjksdfjsfkd)
8. I dunno??? Northern Exposure?? Jane the Virgin?? I'm watching Devil Judge rn?? (I <3 Lame Men)
tagging @teatimewithgiles @summrsbuffy @chasingfictions @danneethai @norakovacs @slaygentford @strathmoresketches but no pressure, and also anyone else who wants to :)

I've never seen Daredevil in my life (i know I know it's ridiculous especially when I've seen Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and the Defenders) so the little I know of him is through The Defenders and She-Hulk and the pilot episode. A little some second hand knowledge from people here and fandom Wikipedia too.
But I have a story idea, and I haven't seen any one try to write it yet so far. Too many people wanna fuck Matt Murdock, i guess, which is completely understandable.
I'll probably write it, but I would love someone more experienced in writing fan fiction to do it.
Anyway.
It's just the idea of being in love with Matt Murdock since meeting in college, but him constantly choosing Elektra.
Main character has been friends with Foggy and Matt since college. More Foggy's friend than Matt, but since those two are attached at the hip, Matt becomes a dear friend too. There's an attraction between the two that eventually ends up with them dating during their time in uni. It's casual and fun, and the Main Character is so into Matt, and there's a huge possibility they'll finally take the next step and become serious. Like a proper serious relationship.
Until Elektra shows up. Matt likes the main character, a lot, but Elektra makes him feel like he's flying. She was someone who he can fully be himself. Someone who also embraces his dark side. Main character only knew Matt, the cute and snarky blind guy. The main character agrees to break up, convincing themselves that they didn't date long enough for this to be such a big deal. And for a bit, things are awkward in their friend group, but the MC gets over it. They start to date, other people.
And then Elektra leaves. And while MC and Matt don't try to date again, the dynamic is almost how it used to be. They don't really flirt with each other anymore because there are protocols after an end of a relationship (even though technically they were never serious) but there's still that undercurrent of something that is hard to ignore sometimes.
Years go by, Matt and Foggy are lawyers and starting their own business. MC is an art curator for a private gallery (or choose whatever.) Karen has entered the friend group.
Sometime after the Chitauri invasion, and Matt as Daredevil, they try again. And things are going well. Despite neither knowing the other's secret (Matt being daredevil and MC? Well, I like to think they're hiding powers. Maybe they're magical and while they never used their magic near him, there's a certain scent that magic has like the smoke of a fire, fresh soil, or the moment before rain strikes, but he obviously can't tell it's magic-there's no reference to that- and just assumes that's just specific to them), they're happy. They're taking it slow. And they haven't really mentioned it to Foggy though he's suspicious.
But of course, Elektra shows up again. MC doesn't actually know she's back. Elektra is Daredevil's world. But then they find her in Matt's bed and Matt has to explain it all anyway.
MC is understandably upset and asks if it's even a good idea for them to continue when they can clearly see how Matt is not over her. Matt insists there's nothing going on. He's just helping her out. MC doesn't really believe him about being over her (they had heard from Foggy about what a mess he had been when Elektra left him) but decides they'll trust him to help Elektra solve whatever danger she's in. A relationship is about trust and communication, right? and they needed to start somewhere.
Elektra dies. Matt is distraught but trying not to let MC know. They obviously know and try to be there for him. They talk, and slowly, they patch over whatever cracks there had been. It's hard to date someone who has lost someone they loved previously, and MC has contemplated breaking up with him to give him room to breathe, but they don't want to and when they sort of hinted at maybe taking a break, Matt flatly refused, telling them that yes while he's sad he couldn't save Elektra, he liked MC and didn't want to give them up. He made a mistake once back in college and didn't want to repeat it.
Then, the whole Defender fiasco happens. Elektra is alive. Immortal secret club is trying to take over the world or destroy it (it's all the same, really). And Matt is presumably dead.
MC wasn't actually in the city when it happened. They were busy with work( and/or magic-relate business. ). When they came back home, Foggy was the one that sat them down and told them what had happened. They demanded that Jessica meet them to give MC the full details. They refused to believe that Matt was dead.
It feels like the ground is slowly breaking apart from underneath them. Jessica does meet them, uncomfortable and for once not spiky, and tells them about Matt's final moments. About Elektra.
MC waits for Jessica to leave before they react. Truly, they can't process it. Matt gone. Matt choosing to stay behind to fight Elektra.
They know the truth, though. Matt chose her over them again, and this time for the final time.
Matt couldn't live in a world where he had to choose to watch Elektra die again. Even if it meant leaving them behind.
Over the months, Foggy and Karen still hold out hope that Matt is alive. MC doesn't and grieves. Tries to come to terms with not only the loss of a dear friend, but also loss of a relationship as well.
When Matt does eventually come back, he's different. He's angry and determined to bring Fisk down once and for all. He doesn't approach Foggy and Karen or if he does, it's for Daredevil purposes. He wasn't planning to run into the MC, but he does.
The interaction is painful and biting. MC is holding a lot of sadness and rage herself. Things are said. Matt doesn't reassure them of their thoughts and assumptions because it's better this way. In his point of view, Matt Murdock is dead and the only thing important to him right now was taking down Fisk and protecting Hell's kitchen. MC, after learning his plan, says this isn't really about him getting justice or protecting people. This is him destroying himself. He wasn't a hero.
So he lives to fight Fisk. And it's final. Maybe Foggy comes by and updates them on what happened and invites MC to eat with them just like old times. Maybe they join the final fight and save his behind numerous times. A call back to the Defenders and how he could have called them for assistance but didn't. Maybe Matt tries to apologize or maybe he knows its futile, whatever it is, MC declines and decides they need a clean break from Matt Murdock.
The story would end somewhere here. None of those may be the actual ending specifically, but their relationship should have imploded by the end of the story.
This is all speculation, but Matt is beautiful, funny, and charming, but he holds a lot of baggage he's never really attempted to resolve. He's reckless with his life and single-minded. He loves his friends, but sometimes takes them for granted. And his relationship with Elektra, though beautiful and sincere, is destructive and dark and so impactful it ruins any other relationship he could have.
The MC has always denied being in love with Matt Murdock, but they were and have been since college. Maybe they should have known better than to accept a date from Matt Murdock, but they never thought they would be dealing with Elektra again. And it took a building falling on their boyfriend for MC to finally break this toxic cycle.
Idk what do you think? I would definitely need help writing this if I tried to pursue this.
If someone, however, does decide to write it, I would love to read it. I would appreciate being tagged!

Super agree with Foggy...look at Defenders where he sets aside his feelings towards Matt being Daredevil and shows him support by handing him his suit personally. And in S3 when he was adamant to Karen that he was willing to forgive Matt and didn't want to abandon him
But is Karen really at the same level of importance? One of the things that tick me is that I feel like I've seen Karen support Frank more than she ever did Matt. This is why I kinda fail to see the "she's so vital to Matt"...she didn't really show that. Not saying I wanted her to just show mindless unconditional support but it was weird how much more grace she showed to Frank than Matt in attempting to understand his motivations. She just straights up liken him to an addict which is problematic to me. Matt was the one man to ever help her first in her problem yet she couldn't lend him as much grace as she did Frank. Doesn't sit well with me at all
This is why she will never be as important as Foggy IMO. Sorry for the long rant.
Agai this really is a matter of fan’s opinion because I’ve seen so much Karen hate sadly, but for me, yes. I think she is. I say Foggy was the heart of the show, but not only to Matt, he was to Karen too. (She does say at one point that it was Matt AND Foggy that convinced her Matt was some kind of addict)
Matt has become one of my favorite characters ever, but I didn’t ignore some flaws he had or slightly had, and Karen was also a flawed character in certain ways. But she didn’t just straight up support Frank until after she dug deeper and found out what really happened why he was doing what he he did. And unfortunately that came at a time in S2 where there was too much shit on Matt’s plate and some things fell through the cracks. But Karen’s past makes sense of why she aligned with Frank and/or wanted to help him.
Because she also has a good heart under that penchant for pulling a trigger sometimes 🤷🏻‍♀️ she’s just a little more okay doing it if she absolutely has to. But she’s always been determined and sharp minded and wants to help just as much as Matt does so when she was finally told, and it all made sense, by that point she was already hurt and disappointed 🤷🏻‍♀️ but she also comes around by the Defenders and S3- especially holding that hope and having a feeling that Matt wasn’t truly gone.
In S3 when Matt shows up at her place again Karen is back in a life threatening situation and her reactions to him again make sense for that moment and honestly very realistic.
If she was told sooner about Matt’s secret, if Matt revealed himself to be alive sooner in S3, she would have a different reaction. But this also goes back to my point about Foggy being the one who knows every side and shape and cut and damage piece of Matt. When he says to Karen that all of Matt’s life he’s been abandoned and he wasn’t going to do the same even after everything, and that everything was very much rooted in Matt’s own self hate and worth and his trauma. And I think once Karen was reminded of that she too wasn’t going to abandon Matt.
To me she never really did, stepping away to take time for herself is different than full on never speaking to him again or leaving, es if she felt hurt from the events in S2 but in The Defenders we see that she does still care for Matt.
The whole “vital” part to Matt thing I think is due to, again, her own heart and deep care she has for Foggy and Matt because she too lost her entire family (but it her fault or an accident) but because of some of the violence in her own life, and siding with Frank, she has more of an understanding with Matt’s violent Devil side and the injustice that’s the cause of that.
She’s just not the typical female character that sits by a man and lets them get away with hurting her or is super quick to forgive and forget, because if you hurt her you better not do it again. And maybe that’s something I resonated with in a way, but to me yeah, I think she’s just as important to Matt’s life. BUT that doesn’t have to be a continued romance (as they showed in Defenders and S3) and now that she knows everything and understands it more would make her someone else in his corner supporting him.
(Let’s not forget that Foggy still doesn’t outright support Daredevil’s tactics mainly because he’s terrified of Matt dying or getting caught)

So, Spiderman : No Way Home was good, but I wasn't mind-blown, nor was I disappointed. It's just good. The VFX is good, references to prior Spidermen are good. The emotions held on by Tom are exquisite, he's carrying the movie on his own.
But, I was expecting all that happened, I wish they would have promoted the movie a different way, focusing on Doctor Strange x Tom's Peter Parker maybe, because it made Andrew's and Tobey's Spidermen predictable.
I just knew from the trailers they would be there. If the 'villains' pass through Tom's Peter dimension then their own Spidermen will too it's just logic and that kind of ruined the surprise for me? I mean, the trailers gave away A LOT to me.
I wish I hadn't seen the trailers or they would promote their movies differently, you get more and more information from trailers now, I feel like.
Although, I was very delighted to see Andrew, I was about 12/13 when I saw the Amazing Spider-Man, which I loved way more then. Tobey's Spiderman will always be a classic, the first two movies (especially the first) are good, classics, but I connected more with Andrew's growing up. To cut it shortly I've enjoyed seeing them even though I predicted it. (Andrew's Peter Parker my beloved 💖)
Also, Matt Murdock's entering the MCU, it's cool even though I don't really mind about Daredevil.
The memory loss spell, I'm so torn because it's an excellent trope, but I have PTSD from Teen Wolf S6a, so I have mixed feelings. I'm really really glad there's a new Spiderman trilogy with Tom.
And I already fucking hate that some symbiote is taking place in the MCU, I've been avoiding Venom and its sequel because Spiderman 3 is just so terrible, and I've never enjoyed that arc in the first place, so, whatever they'll be doing with a symbiote I'll be ignoring it too.
(Now I know y'all haters enjoy bullying me for giving my opinions wholeheartedly, but just don't. I understand and I know people can appreciate something or not, and it's normal, we've all got different taste ffs)

Yandere Simulator Delinquents.
They're basically copy and paste. Sooo here's my version of them for future reference! I got too excited writing the last one lol- It's been a while since I've been to inspired to write. This is a nice feeling uvu
Umeji Kizuguchi - Yellow guy
He has blonde, previously pink, hair and golden eyes. He wears a yellow shirt under unbuttoned blazer and carries a baseball bat around. He has a scar over his right eye. Umeji is Oroso right hand man and takes over position while she's gone; these are the cannon versions of him and all that's said.
This is my fannon version of him: He was hurt the most during the bullying and therefore the most fearful of pain. He flinches when touched and gets pissed instantly. He's the most cold and aggressive out of the five and it helped him keep him as the most feared of the delinquents. He works out daily, therefore having a good build and likes bitter foods rather than sweets. He'a quite ignorant and refuses to share his likes out of fear of being judged. He still feels depression but now faces more anxiety than anything. He often cries about it late at night.
But despite his depression, he's so determined to stay as a threat to many. It's the kist alive he's ever felt. He's somewhat narcissistic and has both an inferiority and superiority complex, actually. Sensitive to touch and criticism but damn his ego is big. He uses his strength and speed as another threat to fellow students, to let them know that if they mess up then he'll catch and hurt them.
His home life isn't fun. Parents maybe fighting here and there or gone for work or something. It wasn't abusive in any way or anything; in fact, they get along well when they're together. It's just the parents weren't attentive. As Umeji puts it, "My mom, dad, bless their hearts, but they aren't great." They tend to brush things off quickly and spend too much time to themselves.
Dairoku Surikizu - Blue manz
He has blonde, previously blue, hair and blue eyes. He wears a blue shirt under an unbuttoned blazer and carries around a boten or some shit, idk I couldn't figure it out. He has a scar on his lip and from Mulberry's art, it looks like he's the tallest of the group.
Fannonly, he's the most anxious of the group. He never talks about it to anyone but Hokuto, who brushes it off. Dairoku got his scar a long time ago when his parents were agruing; he hid under his bed when he was nine and started to cry. To calm himself, he started to bite his lip and scratch himself on the forearms and face to calm himself down. He cut himself in the process badly and tried to hide it from his parents so he didn't get yelled at.
His home life wasn't too bad either; his dad left the family not long after that incident when he was nine so his mom has to take on the roles of two people. She never has time for him so the other delinquents make him feel so happy. He likes- no, loves to talk to them but tries to look sketchy in the process.
Hokuto Furukizu - Purple manz
He has blonde, previously golden, hair and purple eyes. From Mulberry's art, he seems to be the second tallest, but very close to Dairoku. He carried around a metal pipe and wears a purple shirt under his opened blazer. He has a scar on his cheek too btw.
Fannonly, he talks most to Dairoku. He usually brushed off what he says, but relates to him most. Of the 5, he desperately wants to be normal and free the most. He was well popular in middle school but his anger once got the best of him and a fight caused him to lose a lot of his reputation. It just got worse as time went on however; but he misses those days so much.
His scare on his cheek came from the fight and serves as a curse mark to him; "The day they ruined my life." He hates looking at it and gets pissed off when people even look at it. He's always been hot headed but his physical appearance is his number one insecurity. Hokuto's homelife is normal and he's goodboi at home. Cleans, cooks sometimes, has an equally good relationship with his mom as he does his dad.
He managed to convince them that his new appearance and signs of depression from last year was just influence from ex friends. Eventually they just took his word for it despite how terrible of a lie that is, so they stopped asking.
Gaku Hikitsuri - Red guyz
According to Mulberry's art, the blonde who once had light blue hair and red eyes is the second tallest. He has a scar on his forehead and carried around a crowbar. His shirt is red and under, you guessed it, an unbuttoned blazer.
He's a genuine tsundere; the angriest of the group. He easily crushes on people like a simp and gets nervous easily, so he acts all defensive and aggressive around them especially. Other than Umeji, he's the quickest to shove people around and assert his position. But for the most part, he intentionally shoves and shoulder checks people he finds attractive or who he thinks is superior than him, which is a lot of people.
He suffers from an inferiority complex that makes him think everyone judges him behind his back and talks about him especially. Therefore, he's the loudest and quickest to insults; he's also very self conscious. He's scared to make noise in class, talk, eat in front of people, and others because he's scared to be judged. Because as long as nothing is brought to the table, there's nothing to judge. His scar was actually from Kokoro, the bully who's just a sadist according to the character files from Yandev, who got pissed at him defending himself and hit him down with a ring. He got cut badly and almost passed out from the hit; but hey, it's not like he can do anything about since she's a girl, and he'd be expelled instantly. The bitch even resulted him with a broken arm at some point.
Home life isn't great; rundown trailerpark, alcoholic dad and whole of a step mom, dead mom, things like that. Damn, if only he got more than a mattress on the floor, a cover, pillow, dresser filled with all his clothes and school supplies to live on. But he can't even get a job without his scar making people think he's worse than what his persona displays.
Hayanari Tsumeato - Grey manz
The grey eyed, blonde hair man with natural red hair who carries around a lead pipe is Hayanari, who's last name "Tsumeato" means scratch mark. He has a grey shirt under his unbuttoned blazer and a scar over his nose.
Fannonly, he was the one with the no fucks given attitude. He was usually straight faced and brutally honest when talking to people, but wasn't necessarily judgemental. It's hard to explain but just because he says, "damn Daniel, you're built like a carrot," doesn't mean he cares about his appearance, even if whoever tf Daniel is actually looks like a carrot or not. He was the daredevil who did things solely for his entertainment.
In a way, it was almost sociopathic or narcissistic; he'd be fine with embarrassing someone in front of anyone because it got a smile our of him. If someone complained, he'd roll his eyes and convince whoever that they were overreacting and that they were the one at fault. He's very manipulative and sarcastic, usually just smiling cockily and speaking innocently. Kinda emo, but he wasn't against that title. He actually liked the occult and for the most part, was down for anything that didn't have too much time needed, like school or family.
He was in the middle of everything; okay with cooking, occult, art, science, reading, anine and games, so there wasn't much a person can dislike him for in terms of social standards. He wasn't appart of a dislikes group like the occult kids or science kids, not with a loved group like cooking or art kids. But when he started to express a bit of interest in the occult was when people could finally pin him down and bully him back for all those insulting jokes that sounded way too serious. And before he knew it, he got wrapped up in the hate and couldn't get himself free.
Home life is something he never, not even to his fellow delinquents, never talks about. But one thing worth noting is that he's never seen without a long sleeved shirt or jacket of some kind. He used to pass out time to time during gym classes because he was overheated due to bringing a long sleeved version of the gym shirt to school and never drank anything. When his parents were called, they always insisted on saying they'll do something about it but they never did, either. The delinquents do think there's some kind of abuse at his house; besides, Hayanari is adopted and those things happen often even if it's more common in the foster system.
His family is something he never talks about. Back in middle school, his friends were able to see his "parents" time to time when they picked him up from school. It was immediately obvious that he wasn't related to them; hell, he rarely called them mom or dad. At home, until adopted, was great. Friends coming over, happy family moments, being able to play games and use electronics, things like that. But when he was adopted was when it wouldn't be easy to just tell someone what was to come; quite obviously, it was abuse. Verbal and physical, nearly everyday. It was worse in the beginning but happened less often as he got older.
His "mom" would call the police a few times him because she felt "threatened." She hit him so he would hit back and yell while doing so, so she has evidence of an attack. But luckily, her skin isn't sensitive enough to show any marks unlike Hayanari's. Other times, his "dad" would get involved and hurt him badly.

There are a lot of Marvel fanboys hating the Black Widow movie, they want her movie to have male characters like Bruce, Steve, Clint otherwise they have no interest. They judge her for not having powers, they think she's weak and she needs men, they're hoping to be a flop. This movie needs to be a success, to prove they are wrong. The sexist comments I've seen about this movie are the worst.
I’m never gonna be surprised by bad comic fanboys being the absolute dregs of society. But I will say that as a huge fan of Natalia, I also want to see Clint (and Alexi and Bucky) in the movie (depending on what years they’re gonna be focusing on). I don’t want it to revolve around them, but they’re such integral parts of her story that I wouldn’t find it complete without at least a few minutes of a flashback or something. Alexi, especially, needs to be present at some point. Or…maybe they’ll go a different route and incorporate the Netflix series’ into things and give Daredevil a cameo and focus on that era of Natalia’s life? Idk, it could go so many ways.
Anyway, sorry, I get excited and digress?? Back to the point: I ignore the shit out of anyone who’s anti-Black Widow, and shitty fanboys top that list, so they can scream and squawk and cry all they want. You should, too. They whine a LOT, jesus. There are plenty of good fanboys out there, but they’re not as loud as I wish they’d be.
I just hope we women show up in FORCE and promote the hell out of it, since we’ve all been saying for years that we need more woman-led-superhero movies. I’ve seen so many women backtracking now that they’ve lined up a Widow movie and saying, “Nah, I’d rather have (insert any character here) get a movie of her own,” and honestly, that’s bullshit. As soon as we get what we want, we find some way to go against our own interest - and play right into the assholes’ hands.

Hi. Just read your passionate defense of Karen Page. I gotta tell you, your insight into Karen's internal thinking process is so well-thought out that I think no one else on Earth could have described it better. There was one question that did cross my mind that you could help me with: "why exactly does Karen get so much dislike among the DD fandom?" Because I've also seen hate for her that has nothing to do with the whole "learning Matt is DD" thing and I just don't know what to think.
Oh, thank you for your kind words Nonnie! Wish I got more lovely asks like yours. :)
Well, that’s a question that has been on my mind too. I usually don’t get too deep into fandom matters because things can get really toxic down there. But even I get to see people hating on Karen from time to time. And most times there’s no apparent reason? It’s usually just “ugh I hate Karen and I can’t wait for Bullseye to kill her!” When there is an identifiable reason it’s mostly related to Matt. Many point out the misogyny in all this, which I tend to agree. But I don’t think this is enough to explain the dislike that Karen gets among the Daredevil fandom. I mean, to some people it’s difficult to see how exactly this misogyny plays out. So here is my guess:
I think the reason there’s so much Karen hate is the same reason I love her so much: Karen is a disruptive character. More so, Karen is an incredibly disruptive complex female character. She was written to be that way. How so? Well, first we have to have in mind how much netflix!Karen differs from comics!Karen. I’m not a cb fan but from what I have read, the original Karen Page from the comics is basically a textbook case of what’s wrong with how female characters are written in media and particularly in comic books. The Netflix writers made a point of writing a Karen that is the opposite of that. So we got a female character that is presented to us as classically feminine: a smiling pretty blonde with big blue eyes and elvish features that likes to wear floral prints, pencil skirts and high heels. In this she is very similar to the comics!Karen. But that’s where their similarities end. Netflix!Karen is not a damsel in distress, she’s not a mere accessory to Matt’s plot, she’s not a pretty trophy to the male hero. Karen has a mind of her own, she’s her own person, she has her own motivations and she acts on her own terms. This makes for a character that does not conform to the usual female characters tropes and stereotypes and I think this frustrates people’s expectations. Karen is an outwardly feminine character who is in place to be a romantic interest to the main character and I guess most viewers expect her to act in accordance with how such characters have been portrayed before: sunny, pure, in need of protection and always ready to defer to the hero. They don’t expect her to go on her own quests, to have a character arch that’s not solely constructed around the male’s and to often ignore his wishes. You know what I mean?
Think about how female characters are usually portrayed. Does she show independence, assertiveness and does not defer to men? Oh, probs ‘The Cold Bitch’. Or is she sweet, loving, caring and feminine? ‘The Madonna’. If she’s a badass who takes no shit from big scary dudes? ‘The Virago’ or ‘The Cool Gal That’s Almost Like a Dude’. Is she any of the previously stated plus sexually active and got involved with more than two males along the narrative? ‘The Whore’, no redemption. Karen shows all the above characteristics yet she fits none of those roles. She is caring and feminine but also independent and assertive. She’s all heart but she also carries a hand cannon in her purse and she’s not afraid to use it, even if it’s against The Big Bad Punisher. She was kidnapped and threatened but instead of simply cowering and waiting for rescue she fucking killed her captor. She does not fall into the hero’s arms ignoring all the shit that he has done once he comes to her and reveals his secret. Karen Page came from being a classical ‘woman in the fridge’ case in the comics to be a complex, flawed female character who defies established gender roles and stereotypes in the show. I think this disrupts the usual narrative and frustrates expectations and I guess people don’t know how to process this. Have you ever seen some people implying that Karen is sexually promiscuous? Yeah, it’s real. Even when the only romantic relationship she had was with Matt and they never got to the sex part, thank God Matt had the decency of refusing. Even when she’s one of the few main characters in the Netflix Marvel series who has never been shown having sex or talked about having had sex. It’s pretty much what happens to women in real life, you know? Not conforming with what is expected of them often leads to getting rejection and hostility from other people.
Well, that’s my take on it. Of course it’s hard to assume what somebody else thinks or feels, but I guess this is a way of explaining the general tendency. What do you think?
