Official™ Hermit Species Classification System

so grian decided that hermits are a species and i said no. no way docm77 and pearlescentmoon are the same species. but like. species is just one level of classification. long story short i gave myself a crash course in taxonomy and spent a whole day making this diagram. (im not a biologist tho, scientists please be nice to me. im just a small boy trying his best)

first thing, here's a handy chart of the standard biological classification system (image id in alt text). also btw I took a lot of inspiration from this post when i started figuring out how to apply this system to the hermits

after a lot of trial and error with different sorting criteria, i decided to put the "hermit" classification at family level. it made the most sense to me. also cause. the hhermits they r a family :( they., family . sorry my demons

As a family, the hermits' common traits are as follows from my diagram:

Members of the family parvihabilis have a genetic propensity for hybridization. All of these creatures are hybrids of some kind, although some are morphologically ambiguous and may not display obvious hybrid traits. Additionally, most are smaller than the average humanoid.

Let's break that down.

Hermits are creatures whose genetic makeup is well-suited to hybrid stuff. For this concept, hybridism is uncommon in most humanoids because it causes too many genetic conflicts and just kinda dies off before it even exists. Hermits have uhhhh. squishy genes. They're highly adaptable. This adaptability comes with a few specific characteristics, one of which is reduced size (thanks for that, grian. does it make sense? no clue! fuck it we ball).

I did a bit of research about scientific naming and cobbled together some Latin, hopefully it works lol. The family name parvihabilis should roughly translate to mean small + adaptable.

Next!

There are two genus categories in the parvihabilis family: Aedifex and ingeniator. Aedifex means "builder" and ingeniator means "engineer" (which I have used in place of "redstoner").

The builder and redstoner genera aren't hard and fast "this is what this person does all the time forever" categories, because there are a lot of hermits who work with both. Rather, these terms describe a genetic leaning that usually results in certain specialties.

For example:

Anyone can be a builder, but those of the genus aedifex are genetically predisposed to building-related behaviors. They gather and/or horde various materials, using them to create all kinds of structures. These structures can sometimes be homes for the aedifex, but they often abandon a structure soon after completion. Aedifex are known to be somewhat mysterious, following their instincts to different environments where they become attached to a certain area and set of materials until they feel ready to move on.

Similarly, anyone can learn redstone. However, those of the genus ingeniator have a natural affinity for logic problems and a genetically-wired fascination with redstone as a material. That last part is basically "oooooh Shiny Red Thing! i will put it in my box of Shiny Red Things because it is Shiny and Red". Ingeniator can sometimes become lost in their own contraptions, unaware of time slipping away as they work.

Finally, I put the hermits in species classifications based on whether they display hybrid traits. While all hermits are hybrids, they may not have traits that are obvious or clearly definable. Kinda like superhero universes where everyone has powers, but some people don't know what theirs is because it's some obscure thing like idk. folding sheets quickly.

Hermits are like this in the presentation of their hybrid genetics. Some have obvious traits like wings, glowing eyes, etc. Others do not. The corresponding species names are spectamistus, which should mean "visible mix", and secludimistus, which should mean "hidden mix".

Spectamistus will use their hybrid traits in accordance with their genus: Aedifex spectamistus could include a bird hybrid using their wings to safely build high in the air, a dog hybrid sniffing out the materials they need, etc. Ingeniator spectamistus may use traits such as fire resistance when mining for quartz in the nether, or specialized hearing when testing delicate machinery.

How to Write Non-Fluent ESL English

Hey, I’m reading a story at the moment where immigrant characters speak in incredibly broken English. It’s really jarring. Is there a way to respectfully write characters speaking in broken/non-fluent English without it coming across unrealistic and racist or would you advise just leaving that out of your writing altogether?

This is going to turn into a bit of a guide…I’ll try not to get too carried away with linguistics stuff :)

A Note on Terminology

I’d definitely go with “non-fluent” over “broken,” as the term “broken” has quite a negative connotation that also tends to be used in describing stigmatized languages, language varieties, and dialects that are, in fact, used properly according to their own internal rules (AAVE and many Global Englishes, to name a few). 

Another term you should know for this guide is ESL and L1/L2. I’ll use L1 to refer to first language, L2 for second language, and so on—you can keep adding numbers. ESL is “English Second Language,” which is pretty self-explanatory, but there is a crucial distinction between that and dominant language. I myself am technically ESL, as I started learning English at around age 3. However, since I live in the US where English is the dominant language, I quickly gained in English proficiency and lost Japanese proficiency. While I still have around middle schooler proficiency in Japanese, English is my dominant language now. An immigrant character may be ESL but completely fluent in English.

Should You Write It?

It depends on whether or not the character’s English proficiency is plot relevant. Keep in mind that with writing non-fluent english, you don’t want to overload speech with mistakes, or make it incomprehensible. The most you should do is use it to establish character (say a character has just moved overseas, and in the story their English improves over time) or to further plot (maybe there is important info that needs to be communicated and there’s a barrier). If it’s not relevant, and it’s just in order to establish that they’re a foreigner, don’t do it. It’s Othering, and there are other ways to establish culture and culture shock. As I said before, not all immigrants have a poor command of their destination country’s dominant language. 

The How-To

There are two components that I’ll address: 

The types of errors to include, and

Writing accents (or not)

First, grammatical features are better to use than phonetic ones. We’ll get to why when we talk about accents, but for now, note that it’s more respectful to use for ESL errors than pronunciation. Here are some examples of grammatical features: 

Word order

Inflections (eg. the attachment of affixes like -s, -ed, etc. to indicate tense, person, number, etc. of a noun or verb)

The presence or absence of certain morphological constructs that appear in some languages but not others (eg. Japanese has topic markers like wa, and English doesn’t; English has definite/indefinite articles like the but Japanese doesn’t)

If you’re writing an ESL character, ask beta readers & mods on this blog who speak the character’s L1 to see if the grammatical features of your character’s ESL speech are consistent with typical English fluency errors. Here’s an ask I answered on Japanese, and Mod Rune gives a good example on Korean here: 

A Korean is more likely to try and put someone’s title behind their last name (e.g. Obama President rather than President Obama, Lestrade Inspector instead of Inspector Lestrade)

Second, we want to avoid in-dialogue portrayals of phonetic differences, which is also called “eye dialect.” Here are some examples from a piece of media many of us are probably familiar with, but I don’t think deserves a citation: 

“Will you please inform zis 'Agrid zat ze 'orses drink only single-malt whiskey?”

“Eh? No, don' go! I've — I've never met another one before”

“Anuzzer what, precisely?”

“Another half-giant, o' course.”

Both speakers have an accent that is shown within the writing through misspellings of the words they’re speaking (one is French, one is West Country English). This is a stereotypical (and often hard-to-read) portrayal of accents that Others the speaker and unfairly puts either their dialect differences or their perceived proficiency in English at the forefront of their dialogue. And this is with European characters! Imagine how this would look on people from other parts of the globe. 

Another major reason why we want to avoid eye dialect is because of the racist history of (pejoratively) writing accents in literature. In early American writing, Black characters were written according to minstrel stereotypes, and with it, a stereotypical way of speaking that was emphasized through eye dialect. Here’s a thesis that explains the history of eye dialect in American literature to supplement that idea, if you want to learn more. In addition, unless you’re a linguist or dialect coach who is trained in the phonetic inventory of the L1 & speaker tendencies, you tend to perpetuate media stereotypes that may not be reflective of actual speech. This can be very harmful. 

Here’s a link on how to describe accents instead, and here are some good perspectives on being a 1st generation immigrant and struggling with accents (how that affects them when they’re teased for it, and also strategies they have taken to overcome a knowledge gap). 

In Conclusion

Before writing an ESL speaker’s English in a different way from the rest of the cast, consider whether or not this is really needed in your story.

If you do decide to write their speech differently, look at the grammatical features of their L1 and talk to real speakers of that L1 to get a realistic idea.

Artemis is quite a different fairy from any one you might encounter on an adventure, she was neither tiny like most fairies, and by no means as tall as the tall fairies.

In fact, she is the same size as a Hylien measuring around 1m60. Artemis was born from a majestic fountain found in the Lost Forest of Hyrule known as the Moon Fountain. This one having many powers like healing wounds and illnesses for those who come to meditate near the fountain for many people, it acts as a source of life.

Artemis possesses unparalleled beauty, sublimated by long hair as white as the star of the night, her eyes are as blue as the expansive waves of azure water. Her rounded face with cheeks lightly studded with a powdery pink expressing benevolence, and a spontaneous and natural softness underlined by an hourglass morphology as well as fairly generous shapes that Artémis likes to highlight. Two pairs of wings lie attached to its back emanating a warm light.

However, for some time now, Artemis had craved adventure and, above all, dreamed of discovering the world beyond his emerald forest. It is then that her prayers are strangely heard the fabulous Princess of Hyrule having previously resulted in her plan to gather four wonders, setting foot in the forest accompanied by her white horse. Zelda held in her hands a more than enticing proposition which arouses the curiosity of the fairy:

-What do you say princess?

Even though she was curious about the proposal the Hylian Princess had just made to her, Artemis was quite surprised to be offered such a thing. Zelda's soft voice echoed in her spiked ears like an echo that seemed to sound like a no-brainer. She had just been offered on a silver platter what she had wanted for years:

-You ask me to be the protector of the 4 champions, why is that? And especially why me princess?

A sweet smile was drawn on the lips of the princess who stared at the fairy creature with her blue Irises replacing a few strands of gold behind her ears unhooking a fraction of a second her eyes of Artemis being the most precise in her response:

-Your power is unshakeable, you have nothing like it to heal all kinds of things. It goes without saying that we need someone to make sure no one is at fault! I told your 4 older sisters about it, and I was able to talk them out of agreeing.

Artemis smiles weakly considering this allegation as a boon making his heart beat in his chest developing an abundant happiness and joy accepting with conviction the allegation of the princess becoming then, the official protector of the four champions.

That night the moon witnessed it shining with a restful light as if everything was going to be alright.

To celebrate doing ten of these, we will be covering the killifish, the tenth fish in the fish list. Yeah, I’m grasping at straws, guys. Please feel free to request which fish you want to see me cover! X,D Otherwise, my husband is gonna keep determining what we do next lmao.

At first, I thought this would be the most boring fish to cover. I’m familiar with killifish around where I live and I often use them to teach children about saltmarsh fish. The variety I deal with, the Striped Killifish, is hardy enough to withstand children seining the marsh for them, getting caught in a net, and being accidentally man-handled by excited kids who are interacting with wild animals probably for the first time. The way children handle animals gives me anxiety. Having only one job? Not in this economy! Although the fish used in AC:NH certainly looks like a killifish, it’s not really. Instead, it’s a kind of ricefish, and I’m not entirely sure if this is a localization error or what.

Although it’s hard to really recognize the AC:NH “killifish” as anything in particular, I’m fairly certain this is the Japanese Rice Fish, Oryzias latipes, also called Medaka in Japan.

Thank you Animal Crossing wiki...otherwise I would have been hard pressed to figure out this one. Although the wiki isn’t sure about the species, I think it makes a lot of sense that this is the species included in AC, and I’m here to tell you why.

For starters, these guys just became available in AC:NH and you can only catch them in the pond. This really goes along with this animal’s preferred habitat of ponds, rice paddies, tide pools, and other still/slow-moving water habitats. The Japanese Rice Fish (gonna just say JRF cuz I’m tired lol) is a euryhaline fish, meaning it can live in environments with some salt, like tide pools and saltmarshes. Although these guys are just as hardy as my American actual-killi, they are of special concern in Japan.

Where once the species was widespread throughout Southeast Asia, its range has been corrected to being endemic to Japan, as genetic and morphological research has determined that the species was actually a number of species all along! Who woulda thought... This tends to be happening more and more as we get better at sequencing DNA, and it really throws a wrench in conservation efforts. Where an animal is considered “Least Concern” can suddenly become “Endangered” after a study like this, for no other reason than we just didn’t know this guy was actually three guys hiding in a trenchcoat. Although, for the JRF, it’s status worldwide is still “Least Concern”. To Japan, though, it is listed as “Endangered” due to some pretty legit reasons I think the IUCN Redlist should consider.

Habitat degradation is a biggie, as it is for lots of freshwater fish, as their habitats are ridiculously close to human habitation (and therefore get trashed). Modernization of rice agriculture practices has severely limited spaces this animal can live. Competition with invasive Mosquitofish, an actual killifish from the good ol’ USA, is also driving the species down, as Mosquitofish are more aggressive, and lots of JRF were found to be directly injured by them. On top of that, “Medaka” has been kept as a pet fish for centuries in Japan, and the intentional release of domesticated Medaka have begun to breed and genetically pollute the wild populations for the worse. Why do we keep coming back to this? Stop releasing ya damn pets, people!

Medaka is a socially important animal in Japan. Not only were they domesticated in Japan and are kept as pets, but school children are often tasked with caring of Medaka in the classroom to teach them responsibility and foster an appreciation for animal life cycles. So that explains why Japan is doing a lot to preserve this fish. So, to me, the AC:NH “killifish” can’t be anything but the JRF/Medaka. 

And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

Red blood cells in mammals are unique amongst vertebrates as they do not have nuclei when mature.Anaemia is the lack of red blood cells and/ or haemoglobin. Anaemia is classified by the size of the red blood cells which is either done automatically or on microscopic examination of a peripheral blood smear. The size is reflected in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV). If the cells are smaller than normal (under 80fl), the anemia is said to be microcytic; if they are normal size (80- 100fl), normocytic; and if they are larger than normal (over 100fl), the anaemia is classified as microcytic [3]. MCV measures only average cell volume. The MCV can be normal while the individual red cells of the population vary wildly in volume from one to the next. Such an abnormal variation in cell volume is called anisocytosis [1]. The degree of anisocytosis in a sample of blood is known as the red cell distribution width (RDW).

The study was done using 50 blood smears of patients with different age groups.

Thin air-dried blood smears made after thorough mixing of each sample were stained manually with leishman’s stain and examined under light microscopy with a X100 oil-immersion lens.

    Results and Discussion

Manual method was done with two different observers (pathologists) and the results obtained were compared with the results obtained from automated method. The similarities among the results are shown in the graph shown in Figure 1. Out of 50, 38% of the results were same with both the observes and the automated method. 24% of the results were same between 2 observers 17% of the results were common between one observer and the automated value. Only 4% of the results were different among all the observers and the automated method. Among all 50 slides when examined by the observerl, 24 slides were normocytic, in case of observer 2, 39 were normocytic and in automated method 26 were normocytic. Most cases of normocytic anemia are caused by blood loss, suppressed production of RBCs, or hemolysis [2]. Macrocytic cells were seen in 9 slides by observer 1, only one slide had macrocytic cells by observer 2 and 3 slides in automated method. Macrocytic is usually seen to differentiate between megaloblastic and nonmegaloblastic causes megaloblastosis is seen with and folate deficiency, MDS and CDA, HIV infection, and rare inborn errors of metabolism, while nonmegaloblastic causes include liver and thyroid disease, alcohol, Down syndrome, aplastic anemia, and reticulocytosis. Medications can be responsible for both megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic anemia, while RBC agglutination may lead to spurious macrocytosis [2]. Microcytic cells are seen in 17 slides by observer 1,10 slides had microcytic cells by observer 2 and 20 slides were microcytic in automated method.In classic cases, the morphological differentiation of the three common microcytic anemias is straightforward [4].

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the outcomes of anterior chamber foldable intraocular lens (IOL) for aphakia correction.

Materials and methods: Retrospective non-comparative case series study for patients who underwent an operation for aphakia correction by the means of injection of an angular supported foldable IOL performed for 20 eyes of 15 patients. Student’s paired t-test was carried out to compare pre-operative and post-operative visual acuity (VA), IOP & corneal endothelial cell count.

Results: 15 patients were included in the study; 12 males & 3 females. Mean age was 55.38±17.67 years. Mean follow-up duration was 5.95±3.14 months. The mean log MAR visual acuity was 1.26±0.46 pre-operatively and 0.78±0.57 post-operatively (P = 0.003). The change in IOP and corneal endothelial cell count were not statistically significant.

Conclusion: Injection of angular support foldable IOL in the AC is a useful technique for the correction of aphakia.

    Introduction

Posterior capsular rupture is a well-known intra-operative complication of cataract surgery [1]. In complicated cases with insufficient capsule and lost zonular support it is not possible to insert a posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) [2]. Several techniques including posterior chamber sclera fixed lens, anterior chamber sulcus supported lens and anterior chamber iris claw lens have been reported to result in good visual out¬come in the management of aphakic eyes without capsular support [3]. The polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) ante¬rior chamber (AC) intraocular lens has long been considered as a standard method of aphakia correction. This has been linked to various complications includ¬ing bullous keratopathy, increase of intra ocular pres¬sure (IOP), and endothelial cell loss or even visual loss [4]. Technological advances in lens design (angular support) and in lens mate¬rial (acrylic) have permitted the safe use of lens in the anterior chamber for refractive error correction [4,5].

The aim of the current study was to determine the outcome of using the anterior chamber (AC) foldable lens for unilateral aphakia.

    Material and Methods

This is a retrospective non-comparative, consecutive case series study, in which 20 eyes of 15 patients underwent an operation for aphakia correction by the means of injection of angular support foldable intraocular lens in the anterior chamber between January 2014 and December 2014 in Dar El Ouyon Hospital. Written informed consent was obtained after explaining the nature of the procedure from all patients before surgery. Preoperatively, each patient underwent a detailed ocular history (indicating the cause of aphakia) and a standard eye examination including testing of uncorrected and best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA) using Snellen visual acuity chart (converted into log MAR units for statistical purposes), measurement of the intra ocular pressure (IOP) by Goldmann applanation tonometer, slit lamp examination focusing on the corneal details, and gonioscopy, fundus, and retinal periphery examination. Biometry, anterior chamber depth and corneal White-to-White (WTW) diameter were measured using the IOL Master 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG). Specular microscopy was done to reveal endothelial cell count and abnormal forms using inclusion criteria were unilateral or bilateral aphakia with no capsular support or clinical keratopathy, no evidence of glaucoma, open irido corneal angle, AC depth > 3 mm, WTW diameter > 11.5 mm, and improvement of the visual acuity with corrective trial lenses.

Patients with clinical keratopathy, glaucoma, uveitis, peripheral anterior synechia or clinical maculopathy were excluded. All surgeries were conducted under local peri-bulbar anesthesia using Bupivacaine 0.5% + Xylocaine 2%. One 1-mm paracentesis was made at the upper nasal position and one 2.80 mm clear corneal tunnel incision was made at the upper temporal position with the keratome. A viscoelastic (Viscoat, Alcon) substance was used to reform the AC. The foldable single piece acrylic intraocular lens with the angular support was then injected gently in the anterior chamber, (Figure 1&2). A peripheral iridectomy was done using Vanas scissors. The viscoelastic substance was removed from the anterior chamber with the Simcoe cannula. At the end of the procedure, a subconjonctival depot of dexamethazone and gentamicin was given.

Follow-up visits were scheduled as follows: one day, one week, two months, six months, and one year following surgery. At each follow-up visit, BCVA and IOP were assessed and corneal endothelial cell count and morphology were analyzed. Figure (3) shows foldable anterior chamber IOL in place. Student’s paired t-test was carried out to compare post-operative and pre-operative visual acuity (VA) and intraocular pressure (IOP). The analysis was performed using statistical software Epi-Info 7 and IBM SPSS 19. P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

    Results

Twenty (20) eyes of fifteen (15) patients were included in this study. The demographics and baseline eye characteristics for all patients are presented in . Eight patients were males (10 eyes, 50%) and seven were females (10 eyes, 50%). Mean age was 50.75 ± 11.275 years (range 30-72 years). Aphakia causes included: 2 planed ICCE (10%), 6 inadvertent posterior capsule rupture with vitreous lost during planed phacoemulsification (30%) and 12 post-traumatic lens subluxation (60%). The mean follow-up duration was (10.8 ± 2.02) months (range 6-12 months). Sixteen (80%) patients showed improvement of the post-operative BCVA of one line or more; two (10%) showed no improvement and two (10%) patients showed deterioration in their post-operative BCVA. The mean visual acuity in log MAR was (1.14 ± 0.46) pre-operative and (0.605 ± 0.489) post-operative (P < 0.05). Post-operative complications are presented in. Two patients  (10%)  had  post-operative  intraocular  hypertension (over 21 mmHg). Two (20%) patients had pupil distortion, one patient (10%) had retinal detachment and one (10%) patient had macular edema. No corneal problem requiring lens removal was registered.

    Discussion

There are many options for management of aphakia with no capsular support [5]. Anterior chamber IOL is one of these options. Foldable lenses with angular support are currently used in the anterior chamber for refractive error correction [6]. In this study, we injected a foldable lens with angular support in the anterior chamber to correct the aphakia. All patients presented with aphakia without capsular support from various etiologies. Post-traumatic lens subluxation was the leading cause of aphakia (60%) in our study. Sixteen (80%) patients showed significant  improvement of the BCVA from (1.14 ± 0.46)  pre-operative to (0.605 ± 0.489) post-operative (P < 0.05). Previous studies using an iris claw lens to correct aphakia reported significant VA improvement and a low rate of complications [5,7]. However, despite the good visual outcome, implementation of iris claw techniques requires specialized equipment and a long training period. The insertion of a foldable lens in anterior chamber is a very easy procedure through a 2.80 - 3 mm clear corneal tunnel.

In our study, 2 eyes (10%) developed of post operatively a  transient  IOP  elevation,  which  was  managed  with   topical medications. This change in IOP was not statistically significant (P=0.32).  It  was  also  reported  in  other  similar   studies  [1-3]  in  which  other  approaches  were  used  to  correct  aphakia. Two   cases  (10%)  with  pupil  distortion  were  observed  postoperative, which was also noted, in another study (2). One case (5%) developed macular edema post-operative, which resolved on topical steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops. One  case  (5%)  developed   post-operative  retinal  detachment. A  vitrectomy  and  silicone  oil   injection  was  done.  These  two complications resulted in lower VA in our study.

    Conclusion

Our results showed that foldable IOL injection in the anterior chamber improved visual acuity; the complications were similar to those reported in the literature using other methods. Although the visual outcome was good for most patients in this series, more extended follow up and a large series of patients are needed to ascertain the effectiveness and safety of this procedure.

Nuclear medicine is known as one of the most mature molecular imaging techniques [1]. From single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to positron emission tomography (PET) and from single modality imaging to dual even multimodality imaging, namely fusion imaging, such as SPECT/CT, PET/CT and PET/MRI, imaging techniques of nuclear medicine are growing so rapidly in recent years. We summarize the current state of nuclear imaging techniques developments and clinical applications in kinds of diseases, particularly cancers here.

SPECT has dominated the list of nuclear imaging for more than 30years for its wide availability of cameras and radio pharmaceuticals. With the first commercial SPECT/CT (a dualheaded sodium iodide crystal gamma camera with a gantry incorporating an x-ray tube with fan-beam technology that enabled low-dose CT at a maximum tube current of 2.5mA) was available in 1999 (GE Healthcare) [2], this instrument, which fused function mapping with accurate structure data, has many established and potential clinical value, especially in oncology. The clinical application of SPECT/CT in 2 slices, 6 slices or over 16 multi-slice spiral CT scan is widely used [3]. Elevating diagnostic sensitivity (superior disease localization) and specificity (exclusion of false-positives due to physiological tracer uptake) [4], it plays a key role in the diagnosis, staging, treatment, and monitoring of different kinds of tumors, such as neuro endocrine tumors (NET), thyroid tumors, lymphoma, sentinel node, indeterminate bone lesions and other carcinomas.

The potential future clinical impact of SPECT/CT depends on two fields, i.e. instruments and radiopharmaceuticals. The continued advances in the equipments will concentrate on scanning speed, radiation exposure and new computer software technology for image scanning, analyzing and displaying. With tissues-specific molecular probes developing and even practicing in patients, the role of molecular imaging with SPECT/CT willen large in precision medicine in future. Recent years SPECT has fainted as its limitations, for example low resolution and time consuming, as a result scholars chronically switched their attentions to the preponderances of hybrid positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) in oncology rather than the clinical utility of SPECT or SPECT/CT.

As one of the most rapidly developing fields in medical imaging, PET which visualizes, characterizes, and measures biological processes at the molecular levels with a noninvasive method has established a series of applications in the management of patients with kinds of disorders, especially cancers [5].

Like SPECT/CT, the development of PET/CT scanner concentrates on reducing scanning time and radiation exposure, furthermore, manufactures focus on advanced computer- based methods for data analysis and display at the same time [6]. By coincidence detection and pinhole collimation, PET can precisely locate the source of the annihilation event with better resolution than that of SPECT Most of clinical researches have evidenced that Time-of-Fly PET (TOF-PET) significantly improved imaging quality and simultaneously reduced radio activity (>50% at least) [7]. Patient motion in PET is a source of error due to possible mismatches between the PET data and the CT attenuation map (|i-map), Bousse et al developed a motion compensated reconstruction scheme for gated PET data, namely joint reconstruction/motion estimation (JRM), to jointly estimate both the activity distribution and the motion field, by penalized likelihood maximization. But JRM needs a high numberof iteration due to the significant cross-talk in the joint-likelihood. TOF-PET for JRM demonstrated that the convergence speed is significantly improved compared to JRM with conventional PET data [8].

Beyond what described above, radiopharmaceuticals plays a key role in nuclear imaging, including PET/CT. Radiopharmaceuticals has two parts: radionuclide and pharmaceuticals. Many positron emitting radio nuclides has been successfully labeled to PET probes for research and clinical application. Several metallic isotopes are available in small biomedical cyclotrons or generators nowadays. For example, a [6-8] Ga (Emax 1.90MeV, T1/2 68.1 minutes) generator provides an opportunity to prepare PET radio pharmaceuticals anywhere in need. 64Cu (Emax 657keV, T1/2 12.7 hour) and 124I (Emax 2.13MeV; 1.53MeV; 808keV, T1/2 4.2 days) are suitable for labeling peptides or proteins. Among non metallic isotopes, 18F (Emax 635keV, T1/2 109.8 minutes) has been widely used all over the world, what's more, 11C (Emax970keV, T1/2 20.4 minutes) is an attractive labeling positron-emitting isotope. A diverse array of reactions for 11Clabeling molecules has been in researching and developing. The other functional part of radiopharmaceuticals includes small molecular, amino acid, peptide, protein and McAb, such as FDG, choline, FLT, estradiol, RGD, RRL, TOC/NOC/ TATE, PSMA and so on, which can attach to specific molecular at different tissues.

As a promising multi-modality imaging technique, Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) which simultaneously acquires morphologic, metabolic and functional mappings (DWIorPWI) with excellent soft tissue resolution has emerging in the assessment of response to treatment in neuropathy, oncology and the detection of distant metastases [9]. What's more, the preliminary studies suggest that simultaneous 18F-FDG and dynamic-contrast enhanced MRI (DCE MRI) may aid in the assessment of tumor aggressiveness and metastatic potential [10]. Scholars place hopes on PET/MR shows some significant advantages over PET/CT e.g. in head and neck cancer evaluation or liver metastases detection [11]. Scientists has turned to explore multi-targeting/multi-modality probes which can be used to directly detect diseases in living human body and open up new strategy from different aspects at present.

The aim is to offer you a new, open-source, analytical tool to study causes and consequences of movement in small organisms, ranging from insect to zooplankton. The course will cover all the salient aspects of video analysis, starting with basic and advanced video filming techniques (data acquisition), experimental design, and analytical pipelines for testing movement and behavior under different environmental conditions, and at population and community level.
