"Finn, is that you?" I called out from our bedroom as I heard the front door open. I tensed up when I didn't hear a reply, only to let out a sigh when I heard him giggling.
He was drunk again, it happened almost every week now. Tommy would have given him something important to do for the gang, and whether or not Finn succeeded with that task, he would go out and celebrate with his mates. I would sometimes tag along if I wasn't tired from the week of working, but after seeing our finances, I realised we needed to stop acting like teenagers and start saving wisely.
"Hello my gorgeous girl." he slurred out as he entered the room.
"Hello Finn." I replied as I received a sloppy kiss to my forehead.
He flopped down beside me in bed, taking the book out of my hands and throwing it to the floor. Finn wrapped his arms around me, snuggling into my lap. I took off his hat, stroking back his hair. He was cold from the brisk walk home, causing me to shiver.
“You should have come out tonight." he said.
"I got off work late."
"He kept you again?"
"No, I decided to stay."
"Why? You always say you're tired."
"I'm tired because I'm picking up extra shifts and hours so that we can start saving up for a house."
"I've told you, we don't need to worry about that. Business is good."
"Finn, we're not going to be given the money. We have to earn it."
"Tommy will help us."
"He might help but he won't give us a lot. And even if he did hand us a house, we've got to have enough money for the bills, furniture-"
"It will be fine."
"Finn, we've not even had our wedding yet!"
We had been engaged for half a year. We were wanting to be married sooner, but problems arose with the Peaky Blinders it distracted us both from it, especially since our lives were in danger. I desperately wanted to have enough money for the wedding and house, though it looked like it was going to be one or the other at this point.
"What's wrong with the flat?" Finn now sat up.
"Did you seriously ask me that question? There's only so much I can do to this dump to make it look somewhat liveable. It just doesn't feel like home."
"We'll get the money. Don't worry. Look, look," he took my hands in his,"we will get a house. I promise. And believe me, I want to marry you as soon as I can, there needs to be another ring on that finger. And I need to see my name at the end of yours."
I stupidly believed him. Those adoring eyes I once trusted had lied to me. Finn kept his promise for a week at max, soon breaking it. I didn't mind him going out with friends, we both needed to socialise, I just disagreed with the amount of times he was out and the amount of drinks he was buying each night. He would always offer to get the next round, and although he was a Shelby, the discounts didn't make much difference at the end of the night. I decided I had to go with him to ensure that our money wasn't being poured away, struggling to stay awake for those long nights, and making work even harder every day. It was impossible to keep an eye on him like that.
Usually Finn would tell me if he was going out that night so I wouldn't worry. That stopped too. My mind was never at ease. How did I know he wasn't lying in a ditch somewhere after a job gone wrong? Or what if he was trapped somewhere by a rival gang? I could only rest when he returned, which he always luckily did. I pretended to be asleep, trying to not push him away as he slipped his arms around me, cuddling me for the rest of the night. My patience began to grow thin. I was too scared to speak up about it, worried that we would just end up having an argument. However, I knew we would have to bring it up soon, because our money was only disappearing instead of increasing.
One morning when I was leaving for work, I noticed that the drawer we locked our savings away in was slightly ajar, meaning someone had unlocked it and stupidly left it open. Of course it had to be Finn, no one had broken in during the night. My eyes widened when I saw how much he had taken, enraged that he would think me so foolish. Why would he take the money without asking? What was he using it for?
As I stormed towards the shop, I heard whooping from men in a car further up the street. My face turned into a deep frown when I recognised the car, managing to catch a glimpse of the people in it. They hadn't seen me, and I had to make sure my eyes were deceiving me.
I didn't care about the looks on me as I burst through into the shop, making a beeline for Polly's office. I harshly knocked on the door, entering when she called me.
"(Y/N)? What's wrong?" she asked, a lit cigarette in hand.
"Where's Finn?"
"Off out with his brothers, why?"
"Where are they going?"
"To the races."
I scoffed, placing a hand on my head in defeat.
"Why? What's wrong with that?"
"He told me he would be in the office all day today."
"So? Things change."
"No, he specifically told me that. I never even asked about it. He made a point meaning he didn't want to risk me waltzing in. That means he's hiding something."
"(Y/N), they're only going to bet on horses today. They're mingling."
"They're betting today?!"
She stood, putting a hand on her hip."What am I missing here?"
"Pol, he's using money that we don't have! I need a car, I need to get to him."
"Look, even if my nephew is being the biggest idiot, it's a bad idea to go there."
"Why?"
Her eyes widened."Don't snap at me young lady."
"I'm sorry, I just, I just know he's going to be stupid with what little money we have at the minute."
Polly was silent for a few seconds, and I didn't know if she was just staring me out, trying to make me leave. Perhaps she didn't think it was anything to worry over. But it was to me. She surprised me when she went into one of her drawers, pulling out a set of keys.
"Come on. I'll get one of the girls to call your work, say you're sick."
I tightly clasped my hands together as Polly drove. I was furious, trying to think of what to say to Finn when I got there. He stole our money. He went behind my back, gambling away the money we worked hard to earn. I had never said it, but Finn had it much easier than I did. For one, he worked with family, and although I liked my job, the boss could sometimes be an arsehole; second, he earned a lot more than me, so he was the bigger breadwinner between us, but I worked longer hours. Yes, he was in a gang meaning he had more days where his life was under threat, but he seemed to be having a jolly good time anyway. Really, it wouldn't have mattered who worked longer or harder, or who earned more, it was still our money to spend on our house.
As soon as Polly parked up, I was straight out of the car. She quickly followed grabbing my arm and warning me to not get lost in the crowds. I couldn't make a scene, especially since there could be potential business partners or enemies about. I refrained from rolling my eyes, knowing she was right but also knowing that I would find it extremely hard to not scream at Finn.
Polly guided me to where the men would be, ignoring the shoving and shouting. I wished for her to walk quicker. We swiftly entered the posher boxes, almost stopped by a doorman until his accomplice shut him up. I even heard him whisper 'That's Polly Gray you idiot.', the one time I was glad we had a reputation. She only paused to scan the room for the boys but I spotted them first. Quickly moving past her, I couldn't stop my fists from clenching, seeing Finn joyfully drinking and laughing with his brothers only added fire to my fury.
"Finn!" I snapped, quickly catching his attention.
"(Y/N)?" he exclaimed, struggling to stand and clattering the plates and glasses on the table."W-what are you doing here?"
"Stopping you from spending our money like a fucking idiot! Where is it?"
"Oh, Finn boy is in the doghouse." John chuckled.
"Shut up!" I fiercely pointed at him.
"Where's what?" Finn brought me back.
"Our money!"
"I told you, you do this outside." Polly warned, shoving Finn in that direction, and I knew I had to follow him.
Luckily, we were left alone. Finn continued on, finding someplace we would be alone. Once we were in the clear, the distant roar of the crowds covering our conversation, I saw him sigh quietly, running a hand down his face when he realised what was coming.
"Where's the money Finn?" I asked, calmer but with a mean tone.
"Let me explain first.”
"Explain how you took our money without asking? How you just waltzed out this morning without consulting me?"
"Tommy said that there was a good chance, a very good chance that this horse would win, and I thought it would help us if we put our money on it. Imagine how much we'll have if it wins!"
"If it wins Finn, if! You're gambling our money, why would you do something like that?"
"Because you went on about not having enough money! And here I am trying to help!"
My mouth dropped open in shock."You really don’t see the problem here."
"No, actually, I don't." he crossed his arms over his chest.
"Finn, you stole money from the drawer! You then go behind my back and bet it away. Have you thought about what we'll do if that horse loses?"
"But it won't, Tommy said."
"And what if Tommy is wrong this time? Also, don't pin this on your brother, I know he hasn't even suggested this idea."
"I'm not-urgh!" Finn groaned."Why don't you trust me?"
"I can't trust a gamble Finn. I don't think you realise how many nights I've spent lying awake, worried that we'll never have enough for our own home, and thinking that you don't even care anymore."
"Of course I care. This is why I've bet the money."
"How is this not getting in your head?"
"(Y/N)," he took my hands in his, but I couldn't even look at him,"in a few minutes we will hear them announce the winner, and we will start jumping for joy when we realise how much money we're going to get back, and we're going to be so much closer to getting our home."
"Finn, I desperately want to believe that. But even if we do win, you're in deep trouble." I took my hands away from him, turning around. I couldn't even look at my own fiance.
On queue, we heard a man come over the intercom, it was muffled to me but I knew Finn was listening intensely. Glancing over my shoulder, I watched for his reaction, turning around fully when I saw his expression. We had lost. We lost all that money.
"How could you be so fucking stupid?!" I screamed at him, throwing slaps onto his chest."Why couldn't you just listen to me? I don't understand why you had to lie to me Finn!"
I broke down crying, shoving him away from me. My sobs were loud but I didn't care. Finn could watch, see how much he upset me. My heart sank at the thought of it all gone, Finn had left scarcely any money in the drawer back at the flat.
"I'm sorry (Y/N)." Finn pathetically said.
"You know how you always go on about your family never trusting you enough for the big jobs? That you never get to go out with them and help? This is why. Because you do things like this, you fuck everything up Finn. Fuck!" I wiped away my tears, even though more spilled out."You know I've always stuck beside you, but this is the last straw Finn. I can't be with someone who doesn't want to put effort into their future."
"What are you saying? (Y/N), I can fix this. I promise I'll get the money back, I'll-"
"How? That took us so long to build that up. And you were spending our money almost every night on useless drinking. I can't Finn, I can't live like that anymore."
He ducked his head, and I almost wanted him to say something. When he didn't, I knew what I had to do.
I took a deep breath before speaking."I'm going home. I suggest you stay at Polly's tonight."
"Let me take you home-"
"No!"
"What's going on?" Tommy suddenly appeared, he, his brothers and Polly approaching.
"Your nephew, your brother, just gave away almost all of our money betting on a horse. Not only that, but he took the money without telling me. That was money for a house." I angrily explained.
"Is that true Finn?"
Finn shamefully nodded.
"We can get you your money back (Y/N)."
"It's not about that Tom. He's lied to me. He promised me he wouldn't spend our money every week, yet he did. And then he takes our money without asking me about it first."
"I'll fix it (Y/N), I promise I will." Finn was begging at this point.
"Another promise that you're bound to break. I've had enough today."
"Let's get you home love." Polly said, putting a stop to this argument as she stepped forward, taking me under her arm.
Finn didn't come home that night. I didn't sleep. I was sat at the tiny dining table, staring at the ring on my finger, wondering what to do. It broke my heart to think about leaving him, but it also broke my heart thinking about how reckless he had been. Did I really want to be marrying someone who acted like this? Would he mature? My heart wanted to believe he would, but my mind kept telling me that today confirmed he wouldn't. That was one of the worst nights of my life.
                                     *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I couldn't stand this job any longer. But it was the only thing keeping me alive. It was crappy work, the pay was just above minimum, enough for me to buy food, pay my rent and have the tiniest amount left over. Saving up money was hard when it was just you. Even after two years, I didn't have enough to consider looking at places of my own, or with less roommates. It was exhausting keeping up with these girls I lived with, there were 6 of us altogether. It was a big change when I moved away from Small Heath.
"You ready (Y/N)?" one of my roommates called out to me as I finished applying my lipstick.
"Just a second!" I replied, checking myself in the mirror.
It was the rare occasion that I was going out with them, the one time we could all go out together at all. I was looking forward to a few drinks, and although that sounded hypocritical, I realised that I had to have a night or two in at least a month to relieve myself of the stress I put upon myself.
We arrived at the small club we always went to, it had the cheapest drinks this side of town. We all shivered in the cold weather, walking as fast as we could to make it to the club. The warmth was very welcome, as well as the loud music that drew us further in. It was the usual routine, a few of us grab a table, the others get the drinks in, then we would all make our way to the dance floor. Hours passed, and I had to get away from the heat coming from the dancing, stepping back towards our table to get a drink. I saw my roommate stumbling in the direction of the bar, rolling my eyes as I went to help her, perhaps getting a drink whilst I was there. However, once I got closer, I stared at the man she was starting to flirt with.
"Isaiah?" I said as I got closer.
"(Y/N)!" he smiled, bringing me in for a hug.
"You two know each other?" my roommate asked, looking disappointed.
"He's an old friend. Just that, nothing else."
Isaiah let me go."How long has it been? Two years?"
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, two years. What are you doing here?"
"Business. Nothing dangerous though, you girls are still in for a good night. Especially you if you're good." he winked to my roommate.
"Is he...is he here?" my voice suddenly went shaky, and I felt almost completely sober.
Isaiah's playful nature dropped."Uh, he is. He's really misses you (Y/N). Hasn't even looked at another girl since you left. He's just not been the same." I wasn't sure how to reply.
"I can't not tell him I saw you. Imagine if he found out, he would be so upset with me."
"I know. I wouldn't want to hurt your friendship."
"Maybe you should see him. It might do you both some good."
"Or the opposite."
"He still loves you. Even if you don't feel the same, it could bring closure. But I know you (Y/N), I can tell what you're thinking."
"You were always annoying like that."
"He's out front, in the corridor. That's all I'm going to say."
I looked at him for a few seconds, trying to make my mind up."Well, this one is a handful, just so you know."
"I think I can handle her." Isaiah smirked.
"I was warning her about you."
I giggled at his reaction, walking away and leaving him in his natural habitat of flirting. But as soon as I turned around, my stomach dropped, nerves filling up my entire body. He was here. I hadn't seen him for two years, though I thought about him everyday. Would he look different? Did I look different? What was he going to say? What was I going to say? My brain didn't want to think of any words, maybe I was about to babble absolute nonsense to him.
Upon seeing him, my throat tightened, the cool air slapping me in the face; oh, now I was sober. He hadn't noticed yet, leaning up against a wall, hands in his pockets. Wow, he had changed. His boyish charm was still there, yet he had matured into a handsome young man. It was like I was seeing him for the first time all over again. I was just happy that he would be seeing me in my finer clothes rather than catching me after work.
Urging my feet to move, I almost sighed at how small my steps were. I really was scared. Isaiah had said reassuring things, yet I couldn't even walk up to him. It was too late to back out now, especially when he finally looked up at me. I froze on the spot, not knowing what to do. Finn seemed the same way.
"(Y/N)." he said, I only just heard it.
"Hello."
Hello? Really, that's all I could come up with?
He pushed himself off the wall, coming to stand in front of me, though not too close."I...I can't believe you're here."
"I could say the same about you."
"This is where you've been living then."
I nodded."It's not too bad. I mean, I'm on a night out."
"Who are you with?"
I knew he was wondering if I was with a man."My roommates, I live with five other girls."
"Oh, that's a lot."
"Yeah, it's the only place I could afford."
"I hope it's nice."
"I shouldn't complain. A lot better than other places."
We both knew we were making an awful attempt at small talk. I was sure he had so much to say like I did, we just didn't want to dump it on each other in case the other ran away. It was like we were teenagers again, awkwardly trying to think of something to fill the dreaded silence.
"I really want to talk about us (Y/N)." Finn said.
"You do?"
"I...I just have so much to say to you. I can't do it now, but what about tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? Tomorrow, um, yes, yes tomorrow works for me. It's the weekend, so I'm not working."
He smiled slightly."OK, good. I'll come get you. Um, I need your address."
"Oh, here." I dug around in my purse, thankful there was a folded up tissue and a pen, it was good to be prepared. I wrote down my address, handing it to him.
"I'll pick you up at one. I would want it to be earlier, you just never know what time you'll be back with this sort of thing."
"I understand Finn, I did live this with you once."
I barely slept, even when we stumbled in at three in the morning. Luckily I hadn't seen Finn, Isaiah or any other Peaky Blinder that evening, no doubt settling business behind the scenes. Despite the lack of sleep, I was wide awake the next morning, up before everyone else who were nursing their hangovers, trying on multiple outfits in a desperate attempt to look nice, but not as if I put too much effort in. The clock was rolling onto one o'clock, and my heart was beating much faster than usual. I was about to make my way downstairs when something glistened on my small vanity. Should I take it? Yes, I would.
Finn knocked on the door, and I waited a few seconds before opening it. We smiled as we greeted each other, not going in for a hug or kiss on the cheek, something I was worried about. That was the first hurdle jumped over.
"How was your evening?" Finn struck up a conversation as we walked further into town.
"Much better than yours I presume?" I smirked. He chuckled."Yeah, didn't exactly get to enjoy the music. Small fight, nothing we couldn't handle."
It was strange hearing about Blinder business again."Well I'm glad you're all safe."
"I thought we could go out for lunch, saw a nice place round here."
"Oh, that would be lovely."
"We don't have to, if you don't feel comfortable."
"No, no, no, it's not that. It's just a lovely thing for you to do."
We both bashfully smiled, luckily the restaurant was just around the corner. I had expected nothing less when we walked into the fancy place, not because I thought I deserved it, but because Finn wouldn't be seen anywhere else. His clothes were even more tailored now than they had been the last I saw him, indicating that the gang had been doing well, more money was coming in. We both immediately picked up our menus as we sat, hoping someone would speak first. Our eyes glanced over the top of them, it was as if we were on our first date again, only this time in a better establishment.
"You look beautiful." he said, still hiding part of his face.
"Thank you." I blushed.
"I'll never forget what you wore when I picked you up for our first date. That blue dress you just bought, with a matching purse, and those heels that you hadn't practiced walking in. Well, you used that as an excuse to latch into my arm all night."
I smiled, placing down my menu."It was a good plan, wasn't it? And I did struggle in those heels, I just didn't want to embarrass myself."
He copied me."I liked holding your hand all night."
"What a sweet sentiment."
"I mean it. And I mean this date. That didn't sound right, but...what I'm trying to say is that I want to make it all up to you."
"You do?"
"Yes! I really didn't expect you to leave. I mean I did, but I didn't want to believe that. I didn't want to believe that I had been so selfish that I couldn't even see how much I had hurt you."
“That was the hardest decision I ever made. Most days I battle with myself whether I made the right choice. All night I kept making deals with myself. If you came back, I would hear you out, and if it was good enough for me I would stay. But then you didn’t, so I said to myself ‘Give him another hour.’. An hour went by, and I said the same thing to myself. That went on for the whole evening until I found myself angrily packing my things. Even then, I sat by door on top of my suitcase for another hour or so.”
“I thought you just got up and left. I didn’t realise how long you waited for me.” he sighed into his hands.“I’m such a fucking idiot.”
I could tell he was full of regret. Although it sounded sadistic, I was glad that he was upset when reflecting on our past relationship, it meant he realised his mistake. On the other hand, I hated seeing him sad. I took his hands away from his face, hesitantly reaching into my handbag to pull out the engagement ring I kept.
His eyes widened.“You still have that? I looked everywhere for it when you left, guessed you took it to sell.”
“I won’t lie, that was my intention at first. But it meant too much to me. It was like selling a piece of my soul. I kept it hidden, I didn’t want to risk any of the girls seeing it, they would just ask too many questions.”
I kept my eye on the beautiful ring as I spoke, slowly twirling it around to catch it twinkling in the light.
"I had such a hard time picking that out. I knew what you wanted, but I had to get it right for you. I'm so glad you kept it."
"I did try to sell it. I was stood outside of a shop for ten minutes debating with myself. It would have helped a lot for the deposit on the room, but I couldn't do it."
We were silent, both staring at the ring. We used to do that a lot actually. Finn would take my hand and hold it up as we laid in bed together, both giggling as we watched it glisten like it was in present times, before squealing at the thought of us being married to each other. I constantly fiddled with it when he was off on business, a habit which never wore off, even now; whenever I was nervous or worried, I would automatically do the same action, just without the ring.
A waiter awkwardly interrupted us, and I hurriedly put the ring back in my bag, sharing an embarrassed smile with Finn as we ordered. Once he was gone, I quietly sighed, looking out of the window. We were in such a nice part of town, so many ladies in beautiful dresses and men in smart suits strolling around.
"Are you...are you OK for money?" Finn boldly asked.
I was a little shocked by that.
"I don't mean anything by it. I just want to make sure you're OK, I would hate for you to be struggling, if you were."
"Uh, no, no I'm fine actually. It's not as generous as my old wage but it keeps me alive, I can live with the bare necessities."
I could see him itching to say something else, to keep the conversation going. I wasn't sure if we could go back to the serious topic we had before. However, I also wanted to bring it back up, it felt like we needed to talk about us.
"How's the family?" That's all I could come up with.
"They're fine. Everyone is the same. Well, they're not, they're a bit more serious nowadays."
"They weren't in the first place?"
He smiled."I suppose they were. Tension is the right word, tensions have been rising. Tommy's taking on a lot more, Polly knows all these secrets that no one else does, Ada is rebelling against anything Tommy says, Linda is still annoying, Esme and John have been popping kids out left, right and centre. Arthur is still crazy."
"Sounds like business as usual to me."
"They miss you too."
"Do they?"
"Yeah. Almost as much as me."
I cast my eyes down as butterflies rose in my stomach.
"I heard nothing else for the next few weeks after you left. They all told me what an idiot I was, that I was an extremely reckless, stupid and immature boy, and that I had let the best thing in my life get away from me. And they were right. I knew all of that already."
"I...I don't really know what to say right now."
"You don't have to say anything, let's just enjoy this meal, no more of that talk."
The nerves making my stomach flip built at that. What if we had nothing else to talk about? What if it was too weird to dive into our separate lives? I didn't want to sit across my ex-fiance, painfully and politely smiling through forced conversation.
The spark was still there.
When the waiter had returned with our drinks, we were already deep in talk about what had been happening in our personal everyday life. We were non stop, even as we ate through dinner. The waiters had trouble catching our attention each time they checked on us. I was deep in those eyes again, the ones I always dreamed of seeing. We were laughing hysterically, not at all acting how we should have in that establishment (there were a few eye rolls from other patrons). As if time had gone by in a second, the bill was slipped towards Finn, though I still reached into my purse.
"Are you mad? No, put your money away, I'm not taking it." Finn stated as he carelessly threw down some notes, surprisingly taking my hand in his and guiding me out of the restaurant.
I was tense as we walked, and I saw a flash of realisation in Finn's eyes as we made it outside. Both looking down at our interlocked fingers, Finn broke away, clearing his throat.
"Sorry, force of habit."
Hesitating, I smiled up at him, lacing our hands together again."These are new heels I'm breaking in. Need help walking in them."
He chuckled, pulling me closer as we walked down the street. We were silent, feeling like kids in love again. I couldn't deny that my feelings were still strong for Finn, I missed him dearly. At first, part of me had been wary of all this, wondering if he really had good intentions, or just thought he could get a quick shag in from an ex before he left; but the effort he went through, the things we spoke about, trying to heal old wounds, Finn had matured and he was wanting to fix this. I wanted to fix this, my heart was aching for my old life with him.
“We’re not done yet, are we?” I timidly asked.
“Not unless you want it to be.”
I instantly shook my head.“No, I’d like to stay out for longer.”
“Even though you’re struggling in your heels?”
I smirked.“I know a nice place we can sit down.”
I took him to the local park, it had a huge lake with benches dotted around, luckily it wasn’t busy, there was somehow a hint of privacy here. We sat down close to each other, hands still entwined.
“You still hungry?” I asked.
“Hm?”
I dug into my purse, producing a bag of sweets I had bought the previous day. I laughed as his eyes lit up, taking one without even asking. I took one too, reminiscing on how we used to do the same thing as kids. It seemed he was thinking about it too.
“Just like the old days.” Finn said.
“We spent way too much money on sweets back then. It’s a wonder we still have our teeth.”
“Wish I got out of that spending habit. We could be married and in our new house by now.”
“So you never wanted to move on? You didn’t give in to those girls wanting to be with a Peaky Blinder?”
“Never. I couldn’t. I couldn’t even fathom being with anyone else, it was always you (Y/N). Did you date?”
“No, I felt exactly the same. Which is why I was angry at myself for a long time. I was supposed to be upset with you, not still in love.”
His head whipped round to face me.“You still love me?”
My mouth was still open, unsure how to answer. It seemed I didn’t have to as Finn leaned in, placing on hand on my cheek as we kissed. Instinctively I kissed back, placing my hands on him where I could, hearing the bag of sweets fall to the ground and spill its contents. This kiss was needy, the type of kiss you gave your partner when you had missed them, when they had been away for a long time; and although we had our hands on each other, our touch was still gentle.
“Get the ring.” Finn breathed out, our lips still almost touching.
I carelessly got it for him, heart beating extremely fast. He took it from me, pecking me on the lips one last time before standing up. He straightened out his suit, took a deep breath and got down on one knee. I was just as emotional the first time he did it.
“(Y/N), I know I messed up everything in the past, I was careless when I should have been supportive and helped to build our future. I learnt from those mistakes, and I really, really want to go back to how we were. I need you (Y/N), I love you so much. There aren’t enough words to express how much love I have for you. Will you marry me?”
I didn’t need to think about my answer. I blurted out a yes, waiting for him to slide the ring back on my finger before throwing myself onto him. We stumbled back onto the ground, our arms around each other as we laughed and cried. I believed him this time, I truly believed him. He put in the effort to show me his changes, he wanted to fix everything. I wanted things back to the way they were with my man, and we were back to building our future and living the rest of our lives together.

An unusual proposal (Oneshot)
It's been a while since I wrote in english, so please bear with me if this is not perfect. English is not my first language ;-;
Oh and this time it's a female Half!Demon/Human Reader x Kurama. Just to let you know! Again as warning, much much fluff between you and Kurama.
The Dark Tournament was looking forward to its grand finale.
Team Toguro faced Team Urameshi, consisting of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama. Their fifth member, Mask, or rather Genkai, was 'killed' in battle by the younger Toguro brother the night before. Although you and your friends mourned about your deceased comrade, the others were not allowed to give in to their feelings now. One single mistake could result in the next death, everyone knew that.
You hadn't left your friend's side since the beginning of the Tournament and you were even allowed to stay at their side near the battle field. Though now you were concerned about the last battle.   You had asked to stand in for Mask as the fifth participant, but before you were able to speak to the competition officials, you were prevented from doing so by your friends, mostly Yusuke and especially Kurama. It was a lengthy and exhausting discussion that followed with the two of them. Yusuke was anything but calm and tried to dissuade you from your idea with irrelevant threats for "beating the shit out of you if you continue to try to participate". Of course he would never lay a finger on a friend, especially not if he were to draw the wrath of a certain fox on him ..
Speaking of the fox. It was Kurama's empathetic and factually convincing words that finally led you to abandon your idea and not take part in the fight. As much as you hated not being able to stand by your friends, it was clear to you aswell that you would not survive 2 minutes in the ring against a member of this diabolical team from Toguro .. It was just maddening ..
Before the fight started, you cleared your throat to attract the attention of your friends.
"Before you fight, I want to get rid of something .." you began and looked at the ground slightly.
"Spit it out, [Y/n]-chan." Kuwabara tried with a calm and understanding tone of voice to reassure you that none of them were mad at you for your earlier discussions. He thought that, because you were trembling all over and he could also tell that you were fighting back tears.
"I want you .. to be extra careful this time .. Your opponents are of a completely different caliber than all your opponents before .. And if ..Uh.. when you notice that you .. can't do it .. that you. . " you stopped, the thought of what should follow your sentence stung your heart. "... you will die if you keep going .. I beg you to give up .. just give up and end the fight .. Fuck this stupid tournament, your lives are way too precious ..!" you spoke a little louder and more determined as you looked at your four friends.
Hiei's expression was disinterested as always. Kuwabara looked away, slightly embarrassed, while Kurama had put on an illegible expression. Yusuke crossed his arms before briefly closing his eyes.
"Sorry, but we can't promise that." he said then.
"W-What ..?"
When you looked up, startled, you felt a hand on your shoulder. It was Yusuke's.
"If we give up, everything was in vain. Our training, the preliminary fights. And ... also the death of that old witch ... The least we owe her is to try to defeat her killer." He continued serious, but his face showed no sign of annoyance or anger towards you. He showed you .. friendliness and a small smile. "Anyway, thank you for taking care of us all. With that knowledge, we can do our best," he added.
"B-But .." your quiet objections were stopped again when Kurama took Yusuke's place and put both hands on your shoulders. A slightly worried smile graced his pale lips.
"Yusuke is right. If we give up here, everything we have been through so far will be wasted. Besides .." he continued and his expression darkened slightly as he looked at his opponents, especially at Karasu. "..we can't allow these .. monsters to continue their mischief to continue their murders in the world of spirits, demons and humans. If we don't stop them, who should do it?" he asked you.
You didn't know the answer and looked to the side. Kurama smiled sadly and put his hand on your cheek to turn your face back to him.
"Just trust us, okay?" He said softly and lovingly before placing a gentle kiss on your lips.
"Kurama .. I trust you. But I'm still scared okay ..?"
"That's perfectly okay." The redhead whispered and you sighed softly.
"I'm serious. I don't want to go through the same fear that I did during your fight against Bakken ..."
"Mhm .."
[Flashback]
The battle against the members of Team Masho had reached worrying proportions after Kurama lost consciousness while standing shortly after he was named as the victor in the battle against the ice demon Touya by Koto. The rules of this match were like an endless battle. As long as a member could fight, he fought against any opponent. This is exactly how he had defeated Gama at first and was able to win against Touya with the last of his strength. But now the luck of the kitsune seemed to have run out when he stood bleeding and unconscious on the battlefield and Koto checked whether he was still alive.
"That's enough now! I'll take over for Kurama!" Yusuke called to the judge when the third opponent, a tall, dark-skinned man with short black hair, stepped out.
"Not so fast. That guy is still there, so I'm his opponent now." The shinobi grinned maliciously and was already flexing his fists.
"You can't be serious! You can see that he is not able to fight!" You said and looked angry at Bakken.
"You stay out of it, you brat. I say: He can fight." With these words he turned to Koto, who looked back and forth between the two parties, perplexed.
"Well .. Well .. I also think that Kurama is incapacitated. We have to wait for the decision of the competition committee before an exchange takes place .." the cat demon spoke uncertainly.
All attention was then turned to the speakers when the committee announced its decision. They disagreed with the exchange and declared Kurama's ability to fight.
Yusuke and you had to watch in shock when Bakken started hit the unconscious Kurama again and again and injured him so badly that it was a miracle if he could survive this ordeal for long. When Bakken pulled Kurama up by his top and beat him again, the fabric on the top tore and Kurama fell to the ground. Blood ran down his forehead.
While you could only watch in shock, the stadium echoed under the calls of the demonic audience, who very unanimously demanded only one thing.
"Kill him!"
"Kill him, Bakken!"
"Yes, kill this traitor !!!"
You clenched your fists in anger before turning to the bleachers.
"SHUT UP YOUR DAMN MOUTHS ALREADY!" you shouted so loudly that the stadium fell silent and Yusuke and the others looked at you too. "I CAN'T STAND YOUR HATE TIRADS ANYMORE! The next one who says anything about 'kill this bastard' will get a free ticket to hell from me. WAS THAT CLEAR?"
Your friends had seldom seen you so loud and serious. The girls, Botan, Shizuru, Keiko and Yukino were very shocked by your exclamation.
Suddenly one of the demons jumped down from the stands and stood next to you.
"Pretty loose mouth for such a shitty, weak half-breed, darling."the green-colored beast grinned and licked its lips with its iguana-like tongue. "You are nothing but a shabby one demon, who has human blood in them. It doesn't surprise me that you are on the traitors side. But don't open your mouth like that if you know what's good for you. " He threatened you.
Your eyebrow twitched menacingly as the demon extended its claws and tried to slit your stomach. You reached for your weapons,  chakrams, and a reddish-orange aura flooded the metal, your Reiki, mixed with Yoki. The audience held their breath when they could only hear lightning-fast cuts and white clouds of energy sliced the demon that was attacking you until the attacker fell dead to the ground.
"Anyone else has something to say to a " failed half-breed "? you asked the ranks, but the audience fell silent before you could finally devote yourself to the fighting again.
"T-That's enough! Kurama is on the ground and can no longer fight! I think a countdown is also unnecessary .." Koto interrupted the scene now when she saw the battered Kurama.
Bakken seemed to disagree and lifted Kurama up in the air again by his top.
"Now he's standing again. That means the fight goes on."the black-haired man smirked and wanted to make the final punch that should blow out Kurama's life light forever.
"Stop. That's enough, Bakken." a masked figure behind Bakken, another member of Team Mascho, spoke up.
"Why are you stopping me, Risho? I was just about to finish it." Bakken grumbled while Risho pointed to the opposite side of the arena.
"If you had landed this punch, that would have been your death." Risho spoke only dryly, while Bakken blinked and looked in the direction in which Risho was pointing.
Yusuke and you stood there, both of you in your strongest attacking postures. Yusuke was ready to use his "Rei-Gun" while your chakrams had turned into icy-tessen (Metal fans), the tips of their spikes were reinforced with your Reiki and turned into razor-sharp blades that could be shot individually. You were both ready to kill Bakken if he made any move.
"Tch. Fine. Well, you can have him back." Bakken sighed and threw Kurama carelessly out of the ring. Yusuke and you immediately rushed to the passed out Kitsune and Yusuke carried him to the edge of the ring. You were right behind him. After Yusuke dropped him off, you kneeled down at Kurama's side and looked up your human best friend.
"Yusuke." You spoke in a serious tone. Yusuke turned to you. questioningly. "... Beat the shit out of him. Hit that asshole really hard with a greeting from me." You muttered with bared teeth. Yusuke grinned and gave you a thumbs-up.
"Rely on me, [Y/n]. I will make sure that he gets a proper rubdown. And greetings from you. Just take care of our Kurama." Yusuke answered with a wink.
You nodded gently and put your hands on Kurama's damaged chest to let your Reiki flow into his body. That should give him enough energy to activate his own self-healing powers. At least that was how it prevented him from having too little energy.
He almost died ..
When Kurama woke up a little later, he promised you to never again risk his life so lightly.
[End of flashback]
"Remember your promise." you said softly and took Kurama's hand in yours to give it an affectionate squeeze. The fox just looked at you apologetically, but he was weighing whether he could really tell you that he couldn't keep this promise.
"I'm sorry. This may be my first promise, which I can't keep, as much as I would like to. But ..." he began before you could sigh in frustration. Kurama smiled and put a strand of hair behind your ear. "I'll give you a new promise for that." He said and made you blink in curiousity.
"One that you will keep?" you asked.
Kurama smiled and pulled you close for a moment.
"Yes. I promise you, if I survive my fight against Karasu .." he almost sounded as if he didn't believe in it himself, which only unsettled you even more. "... I will take you as my wife as soon as my human body is 18 years old."
Your eyes widened, speechless, at these words. Kurama, who had sworn off love and certainly did not want to settle down in the human world, had just given you the promise of marriage if he should emerge victorious from the battle ..
"K-Kurama .." you started, touched, when the Kitsune put his index and middle fingers on your lips and gently shook his head.
"I have to go into the ring now." He said, because the referee Juri had to call his name again.
Kurama broke away from you and went to the battlefield, where Karasu was already waiting for him. You held your breath as the fight began. It was going to be the hardest fight of all time for him, you were sure of it.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
The fight was clearly dominated by Karasu for a long time, who seemed to foresee every one of Kurama's steps. His rosewhip basically crumbled to dust before it could hit Karasu due to a miniature bomb that the black-haired man had already placed. Knowing that Kurama would resort to his signature attack.
Even the transformation into his Youko form only briefly gave Kurama the upper hand in this fight.
Karasu was strong, incredibly strong. Kurama was already bleeding profusely on his legs and arms from the bombs that hit his flesh. The transformation into his demon form had already reached its limits. Now everything seemed to be over for the redhead when he went down and his robe was already completely bathed in red blood.
It was a horrible sight, almost worse than Bakken's back then. Kurama stopped moving when Karasu tried to put an end to it.
With the very last of his strength, Kurama was able to mobilize his last reserves and thus also make his Reiki to zero when he conjured up a large, gray plant. Shortly afterwards he sagged dead and his friends, as well as you, cried out in agony.
"KURAMA!"
Karasu stopped. Not because he thought his opponent was dead, but because something had pierced his chest. Everyone stared in disbelief at the three vines of the plant that Kurama had conjured up with his last strength. They seemed to suck out Karasus blood.
"What is happening?" Kuwabara asked in disbelief.
"The plant sucks out its blood. Like a vampire." You explained and looked a little more composed again. Apparently you knew this technique. Since dated Kurama, the others weren't surprised.
Before the crowd could properly process what had happened, Karasu fell to the ground. His skin was pale from massive blood loss and his eyes were blank and torn. He was dead.
But what about Kurama?
Kurama opened his eyes. The bleeding wounds had closed again as if by a miracle and he straightened up slightly wobbly. Did the vampire plant fed him with the blood of his victim to save his life? It was the only logical explanation.
Tears now ran down your cheeks. No tears of sadness, tears of infinite joy. He was alive. Kurama had kept his promise and survived this fight.
Without hesitation for a second, after Juri made him the winner, you ran onto the battlefield and threw Kurama to the ground in a stormy embrace. The Redhead was unprepared for the impact and lost balance when you buried your face in the crook of his neck.
"Idiot. Idiot idiot idiot." You repeated several times, still sobbing slightly. This kitsune almost seemed to enjoy causing you so much grief by letting himself be beaten up in every fight.
Kurama smiled gently and caressed your back soothingly.
"Ssh. Everything is fine.", He whispered and heard only briefly loud sobs before you pulled away from him and stared at him.
"DO. THAT. NEVER. AGAIN." You warned and if Kurama wasn't grinning at you so sweetly, your anger would also come across convincingly. Instead, you just sighed softly and patted him gently on the shoulder. "But you also have to keep your promise," you added.
"Don't worry, I will." Kurama chuckled and turned to Yusuke with a hand sign. You blinked perplexed when Yusuke grinned and threw a small velvet box to him. Out of the corner of your eye you could see that it was a box with a beautifully decorated rose on the lid.
"Kurama .."
Kurama got on one knee and took your hand in his.
"I should do this formally and properly, don't you think?" He laughed and you suddenly realized something.
"... You already planned everything in advance, right ...?" You wanted to know.
Kurama gave a small laugh and kissed your palm lovingly before looking intensely into your eyes.
"Quite possible. No, but .. I've never met a woman like you in my life - and that applies to my human and demonic life - and I never expected to lose my heart to someone who makes me as happy as you. "
"Kurama .."
Kurama smirked when you didn't let him finish and cleared his throat to continue.
"Originally I wanted to stay in the human world because my mother and my friends were so close to my heart. But now there is another reason why I don't want to leave this world anymore. I want you by my side until the end of my days and ... start a family with you. In the human world. That is why I ask you, here and now, [First Name] [Last Name], do you want to be my wife and eternal mate? ", He asked and opened the box. Inside it was the most beautiful diamond ring you ever saw. Its sides were adorned with two beautiful jewels, a shiny [gem with your eye color] and a shimmering emerald. It was more than obvious that these jewels symbolized the eye colors of the both of you.
"Yes .. Yes, I want Kurama. Of course I want that!" You said overjoyed and let a smiling Kurama put the ring on your finger before he pulled you to him and kissed you passionately.
"U-Unbelievable! A marriage proposal during the final of the Dark Tournament! I've never seen anything like it!"Koto announced, she sat in the crowd as the second announcer and looked dreamily at the engaged couple.
You smiled and looked at the ring.
"So beautiful. But something's missing," you mumbled.
"Huh?", Kurama asked and you turned to him and grinned slightly.
"A topaz." You answered with a smile.
Now Kurama was the one whose eyes widened and he even blushed a little.
A topaz as golden as Youko Kurama's eyes. His demon form.
Now he was more certain than ever. He would never let you go again. He swore to himself.

“Don’t leave me!”
The cool air is the first thing that registers, hoarfrost against your skin and in your veins. A leaf rustles as it skips across its fallen brethren, whispering to each one. You push yourself up, squinting against the harsh glare of the sky. Its purple light and the smell of rotting leaves clung to you like wet clothes. Your throat feels like you just got done screaming, but your head pounds like someone just yelled continuously into your ear. This keeps happening. Why? It echoes like your voice, but not your voice.
“Why do you want to leave?” The words keep crossing your mind. Why do you keep trying to leave? Because this isn’t home, is it? Or… rather, this has always been home, hasn’t it? No…
When you inhale again, it’s to breathe in warm, sugary air. Your eyelids feel too heavy, and you can’t force them open. Sounds buzz around you until it starts making sense, like a radio that isn’t tuning correctly. You pick up on words, just pieces, not nearly enough to solve the whole puzzle. Why can’t you wake up?
“...sleep...”
                                                                                                    “Just leave...”
“...worried about...”
                                                                                                       “...dreams...”
                                 “SW∀Ǝɹp ɹ∩O⅄ O┴ ƎWOƆ˥ƎM”
Your eyes snap open and you sit up. Your eyes first land on a pen pointed directly at you and raised brows. Felix had his arm outstretched, poised to poke you with his pen, and his expression looked both sheepish and shocked. Behind him, Seungmin has one brow raised and his mouth positioned like he’s wondering something. “Good?” Felix asks first, slowly sitting back in his seat. You nod, at him, throat still aching, and you know your voice would sound all scratchy if you were to try talking. Seungmin reaches out to roll a bottle of water across the table, like he could hear your thoughts. You uncap the bottle, raising it to your lips. It never touches your lips because suddenly the bottle is full of… glitter? The dust catches a purple tint and you realize the sky is purple again. You go to move forward. Your foot catches and you can’t move it. Looking down, you realize that you’re in sand now. The purple from the sky becomes less harsh, and is reflecting away from you. An hourglass. You’re running out of time, time is running out, your time is running out.
“Come on! Come on!” You jump, hearing another voice. They’re close, but you can’t see them. Suddenly, the sand starts running from the top, pouring down like a waterfall directly in front of you. The pile builds and builds until another body drops with an “oof” and they sit up to roll out of the way from being buried by the sand. When they turn around, you feel both unsettled and comforted by the mask they’re wearing. You’re struck with a tidal wave of emotion when your eyes settle on his. He looks surprised, like he is feeling the same thing. And, suddenly, the sand begins to rush out from underneath you, and you reach towards the boy, “Grab my hand!” He lurches forward and grips your wrist tightly, and you hope you’ll stay with him this time. Or that he’ll stay with you.
When you land, it’s onto leaves that crunch loudly. A groan slips from your lips before you can stop it, and you hear a groan from next to you, like it was in response. A shadow comes over you, and you’re frozen suddenly, but when you open your eyes, the boy is standing over you with his hand outstretched. You take it, and the world spins as he helps you right yourself. “Where are we now?” He asks, like one of you suddenly had a map, and wouldn’t that be convenient? He snorts, “I wish we had a map.” And, it was like he heard you, “Huh?” He blinks at you, then, “Wha?” A flash of lightning bisects your staring contest. And, the wind, it’s cold, hoarfrost cold. “This is… different.” The boy says. He turns to you, “What do you mean?” You grumble. He shrugs, “Well, you know. It’s usually so bright. It’s too dark here.” And you have no idea what he is talking about, but you nod anyway. It must show on your face because he squints at you, “You… don’t remember.” You think, flashes of dark, spreading shadow, terror, I’m scared, I’m scared, before a warm hand is on your shoulder, “Hey, it’s okay, you don’t need to remember. It’s not important anyway.” You keep your head down, eyeing the yellow stripes on his pants. He smiles at you, “My name is Jisung.”
Jisung, okay, Jisung. And, this feels like a charm, an amulet, something that will keep you safe. When you open your mouth to respond, he shakes his head, “I know.” And he smiles small at you before looking over his shoulder. “Okay, close your eyes.” And, why would you refuse? You’re tired, but aren’t you already asleep?
And, suddenly, the world is warm again. There is a TV playing in the background. The cushion next to you settles as someone shifts their weight. Seungmin is sitting there and Felix is sitting on the floor in front of you. A pair of legs enter your vision, and yellow stripes, “Jisung?” You ask, feeling confusion as the name bubbles up from your throat. “Who?” Changbin asks as he stoops over to look you in the face. You feel your face scrunch up in disappointment. “Wow, okay, (Y/N), don’t look so excited to see your favorite friend.” Seungmin speaks up to disagree, and now all three are arguing over who the favorite is. You roll over, facing the back of the couch, and you’re tired again. And you’re
Falling.
                          Falling.
                                                     Falling.
                                                                                Falling.
                                                                                                                  Flying.
                               “SƎɹ∀W┴HפIN ɹ∩O⅄ O┴ ƎWOƆ˥ƎM”
And when you open your eyes again, Jisung is there next to you. He has his eyes closed, brows furrowed, lips tight. “You’re really good at dragging me back here every time you sleep.” Jisung whispers, quietly, like he’s not sure you’re even awake. “Sorry.” You say when you sit up. “It’s fine, (Y/N). You know I don’t actually mind.” You nod at him, looking around. The leaves aren’t dead, in your immediate area, anyway. Outside of this small area, the trees are bare and the leaves scratch against one another. Jisung remains still and keeps his eyes closed. He still has his mask on, as well as his yellow striped pants. You notice that his gloves match his pants, which makes you smile a bit. Like he can sense your amusement, he blinks his eyes open and raises a single brow, “Yes?” You shrug, your smile growing into a grin. He almost looks annoyed, but the twitch of the corner of his lips betrays him. You look away, taking in the purple sky and the dead trees and the grey clouds. “Jisung, why do you wear that mask?”
Jisung opens a single eye to look at you. Then his shoulders droop, and he opens his other eye, “I have to. Well, that’s not true, really, but when I am here, I have to.” You nod. So, he needs his mask here. Where is here? You think a bit, “And, should I be wearing one?” Jisung shrugs, “You tell me; This is your dream.”
And, when you blink, the sun is blinding you. You sit up, distraught, and look around your room. The sun is warm, but the quiet stillness is odd. Unsettling, even. You expect to hear Seungmin arguing with Changbin, or Felix getting worked up with his game, but: Nothing. And, you hear slow footsteps coming closer to the door. They stop just on the other side of the door, cold dead dread fills you, from your toes to your ears. Four knocks sound out, slowly, intent on making the tension thicker. When the door finally swings open, all that is there is a thick, oily darkness. Nothing more. Except, that’s not true. You see two spots that are darker than the rest that also glint with the sunlight – is it sunlight? – from your room.
“Who are you?” You ask, trying to keep your voice stable and not let it give out like it felt like it would. And, now, you hear breathing, like whatever is in the darkness remembered to breathe. Or, maybe it didn’t need to breathe, but did so any way. The glinting eyes shift, and there is some cracking that makes you wince. And, the darkness from the doorway almost looks like it's oozing into the room, spreading along slowly. It shifts again, before exhaling loudly, and you realize it said something. “What?” You ask carefully, worried about angering it. It moves again, “Marōn.” The voice is gravelly, like it breathed dust, dirt, sand in.
Marōn. Marōn. Marōn. You think about its name. “Who am I?” You shift, coming closer to the edge of the bed. The eyes in the dark narrow, and the darkness comes rushing in. Without thinking, you call out, “Jisung!” And the darkness stops entirely, slowly slinking back towards the figure outside the door. You feel a hand on your shoulder again, “Are you okay?” Jisung’s asking while glaring at the figure that recedes further back into the oily pitch black at the sight of him. When the door closes once more, and the piercing gaze of the creature is hidden, you ask, “What is that? It said ‘Marōn’ when I asked who it was.” Jisung looks over to you, “You really don’t know?” When you shake your head, Jisung reaches toward your face.
“(Y/N), you’ve looked so tired recently.” Felix pokes your cheek again with his fingers. You swat at his hand, and he smiles at the reaction. Seungmin obnoxiously sips on his drink before leaning forward in his seat, “Bad dreams?” He asks. And you shake your head, because he’s neither right nor wrong. In the beginning, it was terrifying, but, now, you have Jisung and a huge mystery you can’t solve because there is no way that you’d have continuous dreams for months on end without it meaning something. Felix looks up from the book he’s reading, “Hey, have you heard this myth…”
Jisung is pacing when you blink your eyes open. When you push yourself up onto your elbows, he stops and drops into a squat next to you. “You really don’t remember? This?” He motions around him, at the cold and dying world you keep coming back to. “You don’t remember who you are? Not even… me?” The more he asks, the more deflated and insecure he looks. You don’t know what to say, except, “You’re Jisung.” He snorts, and shakes his head, “Well, yeah, but.” He fiddles with the gloves he is wearing. You huff, “Then, tell me. Where are we? Who am I? And, you, if you’re Jisung but also Not-Jisung?”
“Drømmeverden, that’s what you called this place, (Y/N).” Jisung smiles, and the darkness creeps further away when he does. He always looks so bright, compared to the rest of the landscape, even when darkness is all that can be seen sometimes. You tilt your head, “I called it that?” He nods at your answer. “That’s what you called it from the day we met; afterall, this is your home.” You blink at him, and he continues to speak, likely sensing that you don’t remember, “This is our home. There are others, too, but I don’t know where they are because I left to find you.” You nod at him, vaguely remembering all those times he appeared out of nowhere, like he was searching for you. He smiles, like he’s remembering something far in the past, before it fades away. “You’re the ruler of this place, actually.”
“Who am I?” You ask again. Jisung smiles again, “I think you know, now.” You nod, you’re beginning to remember, now. Just small glimpses, like seeing a slideshow pass by through your mind. “And, you?” He purses his lips, hiding a grin, “What do you remember?” You sigh and resist the urge to shove at him. “I remember that it is just like you to quiz me at a time like this.” He laughs and you join him. “I remember the others, all seven of them. They’re probably in Yellow Wood.” Jisung is smiling wistfully now. You and he both miss them. “I remember that I – no, that we couldn’t have any of this, if it weren’t for you being here with me.” Jisung smiles shy, now, tries to hide his burning cheeks. “I missed you, Baku.” He grinned at the nickname, “I missed you, too, Sandman.”

Both of Them, and Only Them, Ch. 11
Story Summary -   Melanie and Miltiades Malachite have trouble with love. They share everything, and this has either scared people away or made them think their relationship was more open than the twins would wish. Then along came Ruby Rose… could she be the one the sisters have searched for?
Chapters: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
Once again, another age-long wait for the next chapter. But lately I’ve been on a tear with my writing, so even thought I’m not ‘between projects’, I found time to finish this! And speaking of finish... as I contemplate how far into RWBY I want to take this story, I realize... we’re probably nearing the end. One, maybe two more chapters after this one to reach the end of Vol. 3, and I’ll probably call the story closed...
Well until then, we still have story left, so please enjoy!
---
The second time the twins beheld Beacon up close was very different from the first. First of all, the sun was still up, reflecting off the high towers like divine halos. Additionally, they were dressed in their usual daywear as opposed to the fancy dresses from the ball. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, their destination was not the school itself, but the massive floating arena and the fairgrounds surrounding it.
The Vytal Festival. That celebration of worldwide unity and peace accompanied by a friendly competition between the up and coming fighters of the four great academies. A competition that team RWBY would be partaking in. A competition that Ruby’s girlfriends are eager to watch.
A competition that the Malachite twins were running late for.
Melanie and Miltiades were doing their best to look like they weren’t rushing as they rushed to Amity Arena. “We’ll never hear the end of this...” Miltiades lamented.
“We’ll be fine,” Melanie assured, “Look, there’s still a transport!”
In the coliseum locker room, Ruby peeked out the door at the stands nervously. “Where are they?”
“Stop fussing, they’ll be here,” Weiss assured, “They know how much this means to you.”
“They should be here already...” Ruby pointed out.
“They probably got held up at the club,” Yang theorized, “Or stuck in the traffic, there are a ton of tourists here for the festival.”
“They’ll be here,” Weiss repeated, taking Ruby’s shoulder. “C’mon, we have to get ready. You want to give them a show, right?”
Ruby shook her head and stepped back inside to ready her gear. “Head in the game, Rose...” she told herself, “you know they won’t miss this on purpose.”
Weiss walked over to where Yang and Blake were getting ready. “I hope the twins get here soon,” Weiss told them, “I’m afraid Ruby won’t be in the right headspace for the fight otherwise...”
“They’ll be here,” Blake was confident, “but will they be here for the start of the match…?”
“If Rubes doesn’t see them in the stands...” Yang shared her teammates concern.
A red light by the door lit up, indicated it was time to step onto the arena.
“They’ve given us more than enough time to prepare,” Weiss pointed out, “we can’t stall down here.”
“We’ll just have to go out there, and hope the twins made it,” Blake solemnly agreed.
Team RWBY stepped out together onto the arena, scanning the crowded stands as they walked. Ruby’s spirits began to fall, until Weiss nudged her shoulder and pointed. The redhead shot her gaze the direction her partner indicated to see a pair of out of breath twins dashing down the steps to the front row of seats. She breathed a sigh of relief.
“I told you so,” Weiss reminded her smugly.
“Now we have to win,” Yang smiled at her sister, “wouldn’t want to disappoint them, would you?”
“Of course not!” Ruby grinned. “Team RWBY, Banzai on three! One! Two! Three!”
“Banzai!”
---
“Ruby!”
“Mel! Miltia!”
The young leader and her twin girlfriends quickly found each other after the match. Ruby jumped and threw an arm each around each twin. The twins, plenty practiced with Ruby’s tackle-hugs, caught her effortlessly.
“You did great!” Miltiades complimented.
“Of course she did,” Melanie affirmed, “looks like we picked a winner, Miltia.”
“Now, please tell me you two are hungry...” Ruby pleaded, “because I am staaaaaarving...”
“Let’s all eat!” Yang offered.
“All of us?” Miltiades asked.
“You three will have plenty of time together the rest of the festival,” Weiss assured, “and I feel, as the team just achieved a victory, the team should celebrate together.”
“You’re just excited we voted you for doubles,” Blake teased at the heiress.
“It can be both!” Weiss immediately defended.
“Who’s moving on?” Melanie asked, “Weiss and…?”
“Aaaand me!” Yang announced, flexing her arms.
“Aw...” Melanie voiced, “I was looking forward to seeing our Gem fight more.”
Ruby blushed at the pet name. “W-well, we decided Weiss had the best forward planning and Yang was our best backup plan to Weiss.”
“I’m pretty good at the ‘beat the thing up until the thing isn’t there anymore’ strategy,” Yang elaborated.
“We’re aware,” Miltiades reminded her.
“Oh yeah...” Ruby remembered as well, “I forgot about that.”
“And we will not be talking about it. Ever,” Melanie laid down the law.
“Anyways,” Blake cut in, “I think we should get to eating-”
GROOWWWL
“… soon.”
“Was that…?” Miltiades asked Blake.
“Your stomach?” Melanie finished.
“C’mon,” Yang motioned everyone to follow her, “I know a place.”
---
Yang had led them to a noodle stand. They were shortly joined by team JNPR and the group shared a joyous meal.
“So good...” Ruby rubbed her stomach with a smile.
“I’m stuffed...” Yang agreed.
“I’m gunna puke...” Jaune disagreed.
“Was it really wise to eat before your match?” Weiss asked.
“It will give us energy!” Pyrrha announced confidently.
“And you could aim it at the enemy!” Nora suggested.
“Ew,” the twins reacted in unison.
“Nora, that’s disgusting,” Ren agreed with the twins. Then he looked Jaune, “though, if you must...”
“Ew,” Ruby’s voiced joined her girlfriends’ this time.
“Speaking of,” Yang asked, “when do you-?”
“Would Team JNPR please report to the battlegrounds immediately!”
“Yes! Like they were scheduled to, several minutes ago!”
“...Never mind!”
“I suppose that is our cue,” Pyrrha stood. “Shall we walk together? You are watching the fight, correct?”
“Sure,” Blake shrugged.
“Of course!” Weiss agreed.
“Why not?” Yang rationalized.
“Actually...”
Everyone looked to Ruby in surprise.
“What?” Ruby responded, “between training for the tournament and going home for break, I feel like I haven’t seen the twins in forever. Would it offend you if I spent time with them around the fairgrounds instead?” She suddenly looked to the twins, slightly panicked, “U-unless you two want to watch the fight, of course!”
“We wouldn’t mind spending time on the fairgrounds,” Miltiades spoke first.
“Besides the obvious, we really don’t want to sit on a meal like that,” Melanie revealed. “Not that it wasn’t delicious, but, well… we don’t get nearly the same level of exercise that you all do.”
“You both only ate half-a-bowl each,” Weiss pointed out. Her hand then found its way to her own gut, “though I guess you may still have a point.”
“Go ahead,” Pyrrha smiled, “Spending time with who you love is a true treasure.”
“You would know, Pyrrha...” Ruby muttered under her breath at the others walked toward the arena.
“What does that mean?” Melanie asked.
“Well, you see, her and Jaune-” Ruby began.
“Are together, right?” Melanie interrupted.
“Nope!” Ruby shook her head.
“Seriously?” the twins were stunned.
“They’re the only ones who don’t see how into each other they are,” Ruby told them. “Oh well!” she carried on, jumping down from her seat and bowing to the twins, “are you ready for our adventure, my ladies?”
The twins giggled. “You’re so adorable,” Miltiades remarked.
“It makes me want to eat. You. Up,” Melanie teased.
Ruby had had enough practice by now to tease right back without missing a beat, “well, maybe if we were all alone, I’d let you.”
Melanie, however, saw right through Ruby’s poor attempt at a sultry voice. “Liar,” she called out, “I bet you’d get all embarrassed if we so much as had a sleeve slip.”
“A sleeve? Psshh” Ruby tried to sound offended, “I can handle a sleeve.”
“Oh really?” Miltiades reached for hers.
“Anyway!” Ruby spun around, putting her back to the twins. Her face burned as bright as her hood. “We should get going! We want to see the whole fairground, right!?”
The twins smirked in triumph. “Lead on, Gem,” they offered in unison.
---
Melanie eyed down the milk-jugs stacked on a table inside a booth, a ball in hand. Her arm wound tight, she felt the balance of the ball in her hand, and she let loose.
Plink!
She hit the corner of the stack and sent all of the bottles tumbling to the ground. “Yes!”
“You did it!” Ruby congratulated, “I always thought these games were rigged!”
“You have good aim,” Miltiades assured the sniper, “but, maybe not the best arm.”
Melanie picked out a large stuffed Ursa and handed it to the redhead. “For you, Gem.”
Ruby smiled and accepted the doll. “Thank you.”
They continued walking the fairgrounds, talking, eating snacks, and generally enjoying each other’s company. For the most part. The twins did feel slightly jealous at how tight Ruby cuddled the stuffed Ursa as they walked, but they supposed she would just have to make up for that later. After being so long since seeing the young leader, the twins were having the best day.
Until…
“Ruby!?”
“Hm?” Ruby spun around to see the voice. “Pen- OOF!”
… a mysterious orange-haired girl hug-tackled the redhead to the ground.
“Whyyy…” Ruby groaned from the ground.
“Hello, Ruby my friend! How are you!?” the girl asked, still holding Ruby on the ground.
“I’m good…” Ruby’s voice sounded dazed. “But… maybe you could let me breath…?”
“Oh! I am very sorry!” Penny cried, finally loosening her grip and sitting up.
The twins were quick to help the pair to their feet. “So, who is this?” Melanie asked. Ruby didn’t catch the suspicion behind her eyes.
“Oh!” Ruby straightened herself out. “This is Penny! Penny, this is Melanie and Miltiades Malachite! They’re my girlfriends!”
Penny seemed to take a moment to process this. “Both of them? Is that possible?”
The twins’ guard immediately rose as they were offended. Ruby, conversely, laughed as though Penny’s words were only humorous. “Of course it is! I love them, and they love me!”
“Interesting!” Penny smiled wide. “I was never… told… such a thing could happen. You know, back in Atlas.”
“Well, now you do!” Ruby brushed over that comment. The twins wondered if their Gem knew something they didn’t that allowed this conversation to sound so casual.
“Indeed!” Penny nodded.
“So how are you?” Ruby asked her friend.
“I am doing wonderful, thank you for asking!” Penny gestured around them, “there is so much to do here, the fairgrounds are quite a sight!”
“Hey, if they’re letting you roam around, we should hang out!” Ruby planned excitedly.
“Yes… about them ‘letting me’…” Penny leaned to the side.
A dark-skinned girl in a beret appeared behind her. She pointed rather viciously to her watch. “If we don’t move along, we’re going to be late!”
“This is my teammate Ceil Soleil!” Penny introduced her. “Time-keeping is very important to her.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” Ruby chuckled nervously. “It’s, um… nice to meet you!”
“Likewise,” Ciel deadpanned. She didn’t sound happy to meet Ruby at all. “Ma’am, we really should be going.”
“I’ll be right behind you!” Penny assured. Ciel rolled her eyes, but began to walk away. Once the time-keeper’s back was turned, Penny leaned closer to Ruby. “I’ll find a moment to slip away so we can hang out. Promise!” With that, the strange girl waved goodbye.
“She’s…” Miltiades started.
“Unique,” Melanie finished.
“Yeah,” Ruby nodded, “she’s a cute little clueless dork. Gasp, cotton candy!”
“Speaking of cute, clueless dorks…” Miltaides shook her head. She was surprised to notice her sister didn’t share her smile. “Mel?”
Melanie didn’t answer vocally, using her head to gesture the direction Penny had left. Miltiades frowned and nodded, the two coming to a silent agreement.
---
It turned out Penny wasn’t that hard to track down. There weren’t a lot of people with hair that… orange. Other than perhaps Nora Valkyrie, but the twins knew enough to not mix the two up. They were lucky enough to find the strange new girl only a few minutes after breaking off from Ruby. They had plenty of time for what they had to do, or so they hoped.
Penny greeted them the moment she noticed them. “Oh! Hello! Melanie and Miltiades, correct? I don’t believe Ruby pointed out who is who, however…”
The twins said nothing as they dragged the poor girl to an out-of-the-way corner. Penny knew she wasn’t good with social cues, but just what was going on? She was sure this was one of the few times even a ‘normal’ girl would share her confusion. “What is going on?”
“That’s what we want to know,” Melanie accused.
“I don’t understand,” Penny told them.
“What do you want from Ruby?” Miltiades interrogated.
“I don’t-”
“We saw you holding her,” Melanie reminded the girl.
“How excited you were to see her,” Miltiades continued.
“And you want to ditch your team to see her some more,” Melanie added.
“But know nothing will happen,” Miltiades warned.
“We won’t stand back and let you get between the three of us,” Melanie pressed.
Penny looked hopelessly lost. “Whaa… I don’t… What?”
During this exchange, Ruby had been scouring the fairgrounds for her girlfriends. She finally spotted them behind the corner of one of the larger stalls by the fairground’s edge. “There you are!” she called out, getting their attention. She began walking hurriedly toward them, “I have been looking all over for…”
Her steps slowed as an extremely panicked Penny came into view from around the stall’s corner. Ruby stopped short just in front of the group, her brow rising. “What is going on here?”
“Ruby!” Melanie was finally snapped out of her stupor.
“I… we…” Miltiades tried to say something, but couldn’t find words.
“Ruby?” Penny finally found her voice, “did I do something wrong?”
“Why would you think that?” Ruby asked her friend.
“Well, your girlfriends dragged me over here and began to shout at me,” Penny explained. “Apparently, I’m not allowed to position myself in between the three of you?”
Ruby crossed her arms and glared at the twins with a look that they had never seen before but were inherently terrified of. Despite being a few inches taller, Ruby’s newfound power made them feel several feet shorter. And very, very guilty.
“I mean I could just take a step sideways in that situation, right?” Penny quickly tried to mend things.
That thing that the Malachite twins would only ever describe the ‘The Glare™’ vanished from Ruby’s face as she turned to the other redhead. “You did nothing wrong at all, Penny. Don’t worry about this, okay?” she assured Penny with a smile. “However,” Ruby fixed The Glare™ right back onto the twins, “I do need a private word with these two.”
Both Malachite’s found they were only able to look at their shoes.
“O-okay… you’re sure I did nothing wrong?” Penny asked, “I still feel responsible somehow.”
“You’ve nothing to worry about,” Ruby’s voice was sweet once again, but neither twin dared to raise their head. “I’ll catch up with you later, okay?”
“Alright,” Penny still seemed unsure as she left.
The air was still while both twins refused to look up.
“Well?” Ruby called, The Glare™ present even in her voice. “Do you care to explain yourselves?”
“We’re sorry,” Miltiades’s offered meekly.
“We saw how you two interacted,” Melanie began to explain.
“And we,” Miltiades looked up carefully to gauge Ruby’s reaction, “may have overreacted?”
Ruby’s furious frown deepened.
“Definitely,” Miltiades corrected. “We… definitely overreacted…”
The silence returned. The twins guilt only grew heavier as Ruby continued to say nothing. After what felt like hours but was probably only thirty seconds, Ruby finally sighed. “Look, Penny is a little… socially unlearned. But she is not trying to steal me from you, and she is not trying to become part of what we already are. Even if she was… If anyone were to try either of those things, I wouldn’t let them.”
“We’re sorry…” Miltiades repeated.
“We’ve just… been through this kind of thing before. I guess we were scared it would happen again…” Melanie admitted.
“I get that, I do. But… it takes two to do that kind of thing, y’know?” Ruby reminded them, “So, when I realized you had cornered Penny for those reasons… it makes me feel like you don’t trust me.”
Horror and realization filled the twins simultaneously. Their head snapped back up, eyes wide with panic and fear.
“Ruby!” Melanie shouted.
“We do trust you!” Miltiades assured.
“We know you would never hurt us like that!” Melanie added.
“Yeah, well,” Ruby’s glare had long since been replaced with sorrow, “you weren’t acting like it.”
The twins’ gaze dropped guiltily again.
“I love Penny,” Ruby told them. “And Weiss. And Blake and Yang. I love a lot of people. But the only two people I am in love with are you. No more. No less. And that’s not changing.”
The twins’ eyes met, and they nodded. Carefully, they approached Ruby and drew her into a big, three-way hug.
“We are so sorry we made you feel like we don’t trust you,” Miltiades spoke sincerely.
“And while we can’t promise we won’t ever get jealous again,” Melanie confessed.
“We can promise that next time, we’ll come to you first,” Miltiades solidified.
“We love you, too.”
“So much.”
Ruby took a deep, shuddering breath as she buried herself into the hug. The trio embraced each other for nearly a full minute before Ruby finally broke away. “Okay… wow… that was some… heavy stuff.”
“We meant everything we said,” Melanie assured their girlfriend.
“Thank you,” Ruby smiled.
“And we are still so sorry,” Miltiades told her.
“Well…” Ruby smirked. “You can make it up to me by winning me another giant stuffed Ursa?”
The twins found smiles of their own. “As you wish, Gem.”
The three lovers finally returned to the fairground with a bond that, although roughly tested, felt stronger than ever.

So here’s the run down:
-I get in the building, couldn’t find the merch (it was on he other side so I missed it and when the concert was over the line was mad long so I knew it wasn’t worth it)
-so concert started a bit late cause smart financial does not know how to handle large crowds
-since we were waiting we didn’t know exactly when it would start and at some point an mnet comercial played but we thought it was the concert starting so we then all collectively Lost. Our. Shit.
-couple min later concert does start
-I’m screaming like my damn life depends on it
-when the screen finally starts to rise once again, we mcfreakin loose
-they wore the Versace fits and did shoot out first (I don’t remember the exact order of all the songs played cause I was lit af so my memories jumbled)
-at some point something malfunctioned w kihyuns jacket so he threw it away to the side
-evetually they started getting hot and only im, hyungwon, and Wonho had their jackets
-shownus shirt was so tight you could see the button fighting keep that mf closed
-actually I’m pretty sure that bitch popped by the next song
-also he was so sweaty the fabric of his shirt stuck to his skin so u could see EVERYTHING
-they all sound SO GOOD LIVE
-especially kihyun like—dude can wail!
-hyungwon is a thousand percent more handsome in person especially w the longer hair like...WOW
-Jooheon is the ultimate hype man
-also I’m mad jealous of mbb who sat in the first row cause Jooheon stayed interacting w them
-after today I dgaf what ANYWONES gotta say about who’s the best kpop rapper—it’s Lee Jooheon and I’m Changkyun. Recognize talent
-Minhyuk IS a bby
-oh gahd their solo stages I—
-KiHyunMin stage was a LOT sexier than I anticipated
-JooKyun stage..........all I can say is the dragon sho as hell entered THIS night
-like seriously Jooheon is so damn talented like homeboy can LIT RUT LEE do it all
-tbh they could do a concert by themselves and id still be as hyped
-they didn’t make the flip trick 🤣🤣🤣 (still played the hype music tho)
-WonSho stage was ethereal and luxurious
-Wonho wore his Thotfit
-Shownus tiddies were barely concealed by a see through shirt w only one button
-also I loved the dance for it!?!!!??!!? So much emotion!
-when wonsho left kihyungmin came back out to entertain us for a while
-hyungwon did a sexy dance while ki sang
-I forgot when play it cool was but—WAIT IT WAS DURING VERSACE TIME cause I remember Changkyun sang during the chorus of who do you love
-or maybe it wasn’t
-this whole thing is jumbled
-but WOW what a singer Jooheon is
-IM SANG CENTER FOR WHO DO U LOVE
-Anyways back to kihyungmin
-so they’re goofin while the others get ready
-then jookyun comes out
-more goofin
-then i don’t remember why but Im showed off his thigh (he pulled his shorts leg up) AND WHEN I SAY THIS BOY IS RIPPED!?!!??!
-LIKE DUDE HAS SLIGHTLY LESS BULKY WONHO THIGHS
-than hyungmin did it and they’re so tiny lmao
-also yes kihyun IS the smallest member
-by my side was soooooo sweeeet like my lil Monbebe heart burst🥺
-Im pretending to me a drunk bish during party time SENT me
-the end to party time when they go “we be like dalalalala” SENT US
-so many sweet moments of them expressing their love to us
-we died SEVERAL times during the first vcr it was so cute🥺
-which was a stark contrast to how FUCKED up the second one was
-we got MAD lit for oh my
-when Jooheon did the whisper rap we mcfreakin LOST. IT.
-seriously mbbs were singing the WHOLE damn time
-me include
-my voice is gone. Finished. Finite.
-so they ‘end’ w I think it was alligator?
-so they’re waving like bye this is the last song, we outcha!
-which made me low key sad cause I’m like ahhh no rodeo:(
-so naturally some ppl start to leave but the majority of us stayed
-like lit rut Lee just 5-10 minutes of us occasionally screaming and then chanting mx
-then...outta no where...we see a dim set of lights on stage
-so naturally we go NUTS
-then like magic....h.one appears
-even w no music were going O.F.F.
-so then the other memebers start to come out again and they’re dancing and stuff, just boolin
-Jooheon starts to hype Shownu and he did a lil dance but then got embarrassed by Jooheon and us cheering so he stopped
-Jooheon then hit the woah several times
-if I get around to posting the endment I must cause it’s so sweet and sad:(
-I think Wonho was getting emotional that it was the end of the concert so he kept his head down w his hat covering his eyes while he went
-hyungwon said he felt like Houston made him comfortable like being back in Korea
-Minhyuk said he feels bad cause we were giving 100% but he felt like he only gave 50% which—BOY! IF THATS YOU AT 50% IM ALMSOT SCARED TO SEE 100%
-we also hardcore disagreed cause homeboy was putting in W.O.R.K!
-Kihyun said sometimes after concerts the members feel empty (DAMN MY FEELS) so it was nice to have our support
-Jooheon basically became a preacher for a couple minutes and told us to be happy and follow our dreams
-jooheons fam was there!
-they sang I do love you to end and WOW was I made soft af
-which is funny cause I never particularly cared for the song, but guess who’s changed her mind about that🤪🤪🤪
-then so now it’s over they’re walking to stand on the platform and Wonho OUT OF FUCKING NO WHERE—decides he’s just gonna....TAKE HIS SHIRT OFF!!!!!
-THEN FUCKING MINHYUK THREW IT INTO THE AUDIENCE
-then that was it and I left to wait outside for my cousins to pick me up which took forever cause traffic was awful
-also a fire truck showed up????? This ain’t nct?????
Final Tots:
-Lee Jooheon and Im Changkyun are the G.O.A.T.’s of korean rappers, idol or otherwise
-hyungwon and Minhyuk both sing excellently(so starship give them more damn lines)
-Kihyun and fucking Jooheon were BELTING them lines (especially Kihyun like lil homie did NOT come to play games)
-Wonho is basically if you got a ziplock bag, stuffed it w marshmallow fluff till its maxed, then drew abs on it dudes just MAD cuddly
-Shownu.......he really is a whole ass man
-I loved every minute of this I wasn’t disappointed at all I enjoyed myself immensely and I hope I get to see them again in the future (hopefully vip!)

Ok tumblr decided to erase half my ask so here we go again 😔
I kinda forgot about ei’s friends after her teaser dropped ngl 💀 you are so right that they should’ve been there, like how both Zhongli and Venti’s quests had a “let’s pay a visit to our dead or dying friends” arc /hj in hindsight I also wish there was one of those cool 2D PVs for Ei as well hhh it would be Epic to see her three friends like that!! Ig they thought it was covered by her teaser/demo or something? Since that had way more lore than usual, idk though. still hoping for a second quest about her hh
I’m kinda the opposite about lore digging but it’s probably just me lol, I tend to read lore in game only, but don’t have many of the artifacts/weapons that contain the lore I want to read. But disregarding that, I still want some of the worldbuilding to be put in like a story quest or something, since it would be interesting to see what other characters think about the stories in the artifacts and stuff (do different mondstadters have different opinions on their history? What do they think about the white knight or the gladiator? Also I wanna see Eula interacting with the noblesse oblige set. same with Liyue folk and all the Morax Legends lol. I digress tho)
Big same with the La Signora gripe. Shame on me ig but I didn’t read the crimson witch lore before I did the quest so the spoilers I saw didn’t mean much and there was no shock value during the big reveal in quest 💀 yeah I hope we’ll see or hear about her in Snezhnaya!! Her side of the story would be infinitely more interesting (pls not another artifact set tho-)
About Xiao, Ganyu, and Zhongli: this is why fix it fics exist I guess 😔 I’ve adopted an AO3 fic’s retelling as my version of canon (or at least something the traveler didn’t see)
Mm true it’s strange because I think he said thanked the traveler for being his companion while he was testing out his human life at the end of the archon quest (iirc) maybe it’s just because Liyue’s supposedly a big city so one new person doesn’t really matter to most people (fhdksd if something contradicts this, do tell) I think the fake death was still kinda necessary, at least for normal people to accept that Morax is Completely Gone so that the Qixing can get ultimate authority and total acceptance/respect (that npc who said Zhongli will always be in true control since he’s a god and the Qixing are mere mortals and stuff), but agree to disagree 😌 they’re all shady in some way in the end
I saw you are on genshin twt how is it 😔 (sadly I am on it too but I hate the timeline format because I keep missing posts) the amount of discourse of “whos bad, good, which problematic characters and ships need to be canceled”, and the amount of dissing that goes on there scares me
LITERALLY YOUR 2ND TO LAST PARAGRAPH that was what was missing from the archon quest. Where is my group effort guys?? I missed seeing the resistance… I hope the people speculating Kokomi gets a nice story quest are correct and that we’ll actually wrap up the loose resistance threads there… (also a lot of people are saying morally gray Kokomi? Is there any canon(derogatory) basis for that? I’m just curious because with the way things are going I feel like she’s going to be purely nice dhdkskf)
Im so sorry I think these just keep getting longer and longer aaa anyways, signing off! -mystic
noo i hate it when tumblr does that :((
(2.1 spoilers)
LMFAOOO maybe friendship is not magic after all ahaha but srsly, i agree w you i also want a 2nd quest for her !
ah that's fair enough if u don't have all the artifacts. and it would be easier if it was told to us through a quest of some sort. hmm i never thought about that 🤔 it's a shame that there's so much lore and the genshin universe is so beautifully worldbuilt but players will only notice if they personally read through the archives etc. and go out of their way :( hmm yeah maybe like a historical back-to-the-past type thing with the three clans and they all interact with the noblesse set? or even just diluc/eula/jean tbh
ah i read the lore for crimson before but i didn't remember it fully during the signora part so i had to read through it again after. the way it clicked in my head when it said "crimson witch of embers" and i was like ".....wait a minute....." AHAHA and it was only after that her lines during the fight like "don't call me a witch" or smth made me :'(((( the pale flame piece too 😭 sad hours
yeah at this point, the fanfiction writers should take over the genshin writing lol jk jk
mhm i guess the fake death would've been better and easier for closure ! (and woah u remember so much! i can't even remember that npc... it's been so long 😔 haha)
ah i think on genshintwt i'm usually more on the good side (? if u can call it that lmao) i do see quite a few discourse on ships, western vs. eastern fandoms and other yikes stuff but for genshin, it's mostly art that pops up on my timeline :] i follow wayyy too many artists but they're all so talented and they make such pretty art it's so 🥺 oh do you mean ur timeline isn't organised by latest posts first? if it's not, i can share how to make it that way!
yeah the resistance... :(( mhm! i was rly counting on a morally grey kokomi !!! LMFOAOO THE "canon (derogatory)" took me OUT PWAHAHA (i may reuse that quote ;D) that idea was mostly based on ayaka's last sentence (was it in the 2.0 archon quest?) where she said smth along the lines of the resistance having ulterior motives... and also how baal and co. defeated orobashi, the god they worship (like maybe kokomi was out for revenge?) but no sigh she's ur average good person :( idrc either way but i rly wanna see a morally grey female character where they appear good but are actually super dodgy and evil, that would be chef's kiss. but yeah, after that quest, she's definitely gonna be purely good :')

500 follower celebration (closed)
Magnus swirls the blue curaco around in his glass, watching the waves crash into the shore. He inhales, breathing in the smell of the ocean, and smiles.
Next to him, Cat is talking about a bizarre encounter with a warlock that she had the other day. Magnus feels at ease here, sitting next to his best friend and pretending, even for just a moment, that they have not one care in the world.
“What are you thinking about, handsome?” Catarina asks, taking a sip of her margarita.
“Just, about the past. The future,” Magnus muses, and Cat laughs.
“Anything specific?”
“Not really,” Magnus says, then pauses for a moment, looking at her and then back to the water. It’s a beautiful day, and the water is a crystal clear blue. “Do you remember that trip we took to Spain 40 years ago?”
“You mean the first stop of our world traveling adventure? Quite well,” Catarina asks. The ocean breeze washes over them, and they both go silent, enjoying the calm atmosphere. “Why do you ask?”
“I miss those days, I suppose,” Magnus says, watching her until she meets his eyes. “With this threat of Valentine and the ‘Death to Downworlders’ talk that he’s been instigating, I guess I just wonder what if? What if he does do it? Do we really expect the Shadowhunters and the Clave to protect us?”
Magnus sighs and Catarina stays quiet, watching him.
“It makes me think about how I’d spend my last day, if I were to be so lucky to know when that’d be,” Magnus says, “and I think I’d want to go back to Spain. We had so much fun there, and I loved the people and the culture. We should go back there sometime soon.”
“Why do you fill your brilliant head with such sad thoughts, Magnus?” Cat says with a shake of her head. “Valentine doesn’t scare me. He’s a fraud, and an evil man, and I could kill him with the flick of my wrist.”
“What about his followers? Do they not scare you?” Magnus asks, looking back at the water. “What scares me is this: Valentine’s word wasn’t disregarded. He’s not alone in his beliefs, and even if he were to die, you have hundreds of people with the same mindset as him. They want us dead.”
“Let them want all they please,” Catarina snarls, sitting up properly. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Magnus just smiles sadly. He wonders when his life seemed to fade in vibrance.
“Hey,” Catarina says, setting her drink aside and grabbing Magnus’ hand, “remember when we were visiting Ragnor at the breakout of the Black Death? And when we came home, we had to hear every day about how the situations worsened and Ragnor was in a constant state of stress -”
“-as if he isn’t like that today too.”
“Anyway,” Cat says with a small laugh. “It was awful. I lost Adelaide to it, and Ragnor lost one of his students. My point is, Magnus, that we lived on. We’ve both lived long enough to know that the world will change and mend and sometimes break, and the best we can do is survive.”
“I suppose you’re right, my dear,” Magnus says with a sigh, taking another sip of his drink.
“Color me optimistic,” Catarina says, making sure Magnus looks at her before continuing. “But something really good is going to happen to you really soon. You’re too good of a person to suffer this much. That can only mean that something wonderful is around the corner.”
Magnus just laughs softly, too weak to disagree with the brightness in Cat’s eyes.
Little did both of them know, that in a month’s time in the middle of Pandemonium, it’s not something wonderful that comes around - but someone.
