European/American Dance Companies Asks
Tumblr media
As it seems from the website, Francesca Hayward was promoted to a principal in 2016. However, she made her debut as O/O in Swan Lake last season. Why did it took her so long to be given that role?
Listen, not every company is like the Bolshoi, where you just show up and are given O/O willy nilly. I jest, but first of all, there’s simply not always enough shows for every principal to get one and there also not always enough time for countless casts to be rehearsed. Although to be fair, ROH do prep quite a lot of casts. They do SL frequently of course, and while I’m unsure if she had any injuries that caused her to miss out on an earlier seasons’ run, I’m quite confident that her participation in CATS certainly could have delayed it a season or two depending on her schedule and form.
Thoughts on Elisabeth Beyer? I found her incredible... wish to see her dancing in the ROH or the Dutch National or the Staatsballet in Berlin
She’s very exciting and is finally in the main company corps as of this June! Hopefully she’ll start getting more opportunities soon!
Do you have promotion predictions for the Royal Ballet or ABT this year?
ABT: Carols Gonzales and Fangqi Li have the roles to make a push this Met Season. I  also think Jake Roxander’s potential is very high but he’s very young but Jaffe is not McKenzie. I  would also like to see Zimmi Coker out of the corps. I would be shocked if anyone goes to principal, they could use another guy but I’m not sure they’ve got one ready just yet.
ROH: I think Not promoting Daichi Ikarachi would be crazy, especially after wining the Eric Bruhn Prize. I know there’s a push for a new male principal, either Luca Acri or Joseph Sissons but I think someone has to retire, they just have too many. I am hoping for Annette Buvolli and Mariko Sasaki to be first soloists and I think Sae Maeda and Joonhyuk Jun should be soloists. Yu Hang to first artists as well. ROH is so difficult, there are so many talented people.
Thoughts on Alina Cojocaru?
An angel sent from heaven. She’s never allowed to retire- I don’t make the rules.
Do you know if Madison Penney is in a company? She graduated from Royal Ballet School in 2022, in a seemingly high position, having danced Raymonda in the grad performances. I would find it strange if she wasn’t hired by the royal but there seems to be no indication of a company on her instagram?
Getting into the Royal is no cakewalk, they not only have to compete with the graduates but also the prix prize winners. I thought I remembered her going to BRB? But she’s not on the site. I don’t really keep up with her.

Favorites of the Nureyev Gala:
Ladies:
Alina Cojocaru: Haunting and beautiful performance in Don Juan. I was very moved.
Yasmine Naghdi: She was just so fresh and clean, beautiful lines and gorgeous arms. Her performance as a whole was just so easy and comfortable.
Maia Makhateli: Such a charming performer, sharing lots of little moments with her partner Ivenko, she really lights up the stage.
Men:
William Bracewell: So elegant, so emotive, so tasteful
Oleg Ivenko: Beautifully paired with Makhateli, charismatic stage presence
Marcelino Sambé: So much fun to watch in Laurencia, perfect for this part
Alexandr Trusch: I hadn't seen much of him before, but will definitely look out for him now, really fiery and powerful on stage

Which famous dancers do you consider to be short, average, or tall?
Short (under 5’6): Skylar Brandt, Misty Copeland, Evgenia Obratsova, Nina Kaptsova, Alina Cojocaru, Natalia Makarova, Ektaterina Krysanova, Tiler Peck, Maria Kochetkova, Iana Salenko, Osipova
Average (not too small or tall): Maria Alexandrova, Nela, Olesya Novikova, Diana Vishneva, Polina Semionova, Viktoria Tereshkina, Maria Khoreva
Tall (over 5’7): Zakharova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Lopatkina, Olga Smirnova, Alina Somova, Isabella Boylston
5'6" (167cm) is the average height, particularly in Europe. It's also quite common here for companies to post a minimum requirement of 165cm for women- certainly not always followed though. I think the bar for being a 'short' dancer needs to be dancers under that minimum.
Short (under 5’4 / 165): Skylar Brandt, Misty Copeland, Evgenia Obratsova, Alina Cojocaru, Natalia Makarova, Tiler Peck, Maria Kochetkova, Iana Salenko, Natalia Osipova
Average (5'5-6"/ 167) Maria Alexandrova, Marianela Nunez, Diana Vishneva, Ekaterina Krysanova, Nina Kaptsova
Tall (5’7+ / 170+): Viktoria Tereshkina (I think she's just 170, looking at pictures with her and Vishenva) Svetlana Zakharova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Ulyana Lopatkina, Olga Smirnova, Alina Somova, Olesya Novikova, Isabella Boylston, Polina Semionova (definitely over 170), Maria Khoreva (also right about 170)

💕Last one I promise! These are not for my character but for yours! The world needs to know! Who and what would you pick for Agria and Clem 🩰💕 (Once you’re done with them all)
I am SO glad you asked!!!
Agria is Natalia Osipova always to me. It's the way Natalia projects and takes up the stage!!
youtube
Clem is Alina Cojocaru! She has this softness and sensitivity to her dancing that Clem has in her playing.

Also never apologize for sending these! They're SO fun!

One Night Gallery Love, Alina Bohoru
/ Solo Show /
A two-part solo show in collaboration with One Night Gallery that happened over the summer of 2020 in both Bucharest & Timisoara, Romania.
One Night Gallery is an event focusing on Romanian contemporary art, innovation and technology, during which a different artist is invited every month to create a solo exhibition. They provide the artists with the technical means to experiment with new technological ways of rendering their work.

For the Bucharest edition, we shifted from a single indoor location to multiple outdoor spaces around the downtown area, using solely windows and building facades. People were able to enjoy the exhibition as an art tour while taking a walk through the city, therefore minimizing as much as possible crowd gatherings in the context of the pandemic. As we scouted for spots, more and more businesses joined the circuit, resulting in a total of 13 locations - from galleries to shops and bars.
The setups were divided into different concepts and mediums - from printed illustrations in some of the locations, to installations, video mapping, paste-ups or AR experiences in others.

Process:
First, I sketched the two main characters that would become the leitmotif of the event: Birdman (AKA G Dog) & Beeple
Tumblr media
I then 3D modeled them in VR and we included them in an interactive Instagram filter that people could use during the event. We launched the filter together with the event teaser video:

Using the 3D model as a reference, we created a 14m tall inflatable installation of G Dog and hung it on the Știrbei Palace facade, inside Eden Terrace.

GUCCI Takeover
Another part of the event consisted of animating some of my characters and projecting them onto the windows of the Gucci Store in downtown Bucharest.

Two months after the Bucharest edition, we shipped the whole thing to my hometown, Timisoara, for a second event. The set was a large tram depot turned into a museum, with enough space to host all the artwork in one place: inflatable characters, installations, prints, and a tram that I painted back in 2019. This enabled me and the production team to experiment with a new display layout in a totally different setup.

Totally agree with anon about how under-used Campbell was. After he was hired, he was often treated as the second-cast McRae, even when mismatched to a role (the Mad Hatter, ack), and O'Hare never really knew what to do with him once he got out from under that. I wonder if watching McRae's run of severe injuries over the past few years might have made him think more seriously about quitting before an injury forced him out.
There’s always been things that don’t add up for me. Like he’s always been prominent in broadcasts, but rarely as the lead, and on their social media. He was even in the popular BBC documentary about the Nutcracker. But then casting has never quite matched this spotlight. I’m not even sure he would have kept consistently getting leading roles if Hayward hadn’t chosen him as her classical partner. It’s strange, it might make more sense if there was a change in management and he just didn’t mesh with the new director, like Alina Cojocaru. But he was promoted by O’Hare so it doesn’t add up. IIRC he’s the only principal who never danced Swan Lake, for example, which is a bit of a slap in the face. His style was so unique for the company and he fit into such a unique role.
Honestly I’ve suspected this to be coming for a while and wondered if there has been friction. When Kaneko was promoted he posted a photo of her looking surprised talking to someone on his Instagram story and captioned it something like “Fumi finding out how little her pay rise is after becoming principal” and it just seemed very bold. Then there was the expanding with the production company and the ballet studio, and comments on those posts where people asked him if he would keep dancing and his reply being “I’ll dance as long as they want me!” I want to believe that he just wanted a more stable job and probably a larger salary, especially as a new father. But the whole announcement was very messy. It’s all so sudden and quick, he had already been cast in roles after April, and the ROH STILL haven’t specifically put anything on their social media about it.
