Fanzine Friday #34: The Feminist Writers Guild National Newsletter vol. 9 no. 1 (Spring 1986)
The Feminist Writer's Guild was a feminist group in the 1970s and 1980s that sought to create a central place for feminist writers to interact and discuss their profession. In addition to the feature article, "The Hazards and Advantages of Self-Publishing Your Poetry" by Julie Parson, this issue of the newsletter included interviews with writers Octavia Butler, Alexis DeVeaux, and Margaret Atwood.
The Browne Popular Culture Library (BPCL), founded in 1969, is the most comprehensive archive of its kind in the United States.  Our focus and mission is to acquire and preserve research materials on American Popular Culture (post 1876) for curricular and research use. “When I think of what makes these writers unique, I do not think first of ambivalence and contradiction, I think of the ways these writers have used language as a sign of resistance, I think of the powerful, articulate and passionate voices I hear in their writings, especially the voices of those characters who speak in the vernacular. These gendered and racial voices speak not just for the individual but for a community. They reflect the community’s feelings and resistance and they take strength from these connections. This is the language of resistance because it reasserts a community which the dominant culture seeks to control in silence.” - ⭐️
Writer and Professor Mary Helen Washington provides an excellent introduction in this compilation of anthologies entitled BLACK EYED SUSANS/MIDNIGHT BIRDS. Published by Anchor Books in 1990, it features twenty stories by and about Black women written by literary greats like Paule Marshall, Gayl Jones, Sherley Anne Williams, Alexis DeVeaux and Ntozake Shange. In it Washington offers a critical sensitivity to Black women’s work, and the complicated nuances that our history and lives provide.
I especially appreciate the contextualization and bibliography of each author that she provides right before their story.
It offers extra insight into their writing style and process. This book is an underrated classic that I don’t see talked about enough ⭐️⭐️

How Audre Lorde’s Radical Feminism Changed Me
Tumblr media
Very late one night a couple of years ago I found myself urinating dark, goopy blood. Alarmed, I called NHS Direct. As I didn’t have a GP, I was advised to go straight to Hammersmith Hospital, which is by Wormwood Scrubs, and not in Hammersmith. Anticipating a long wait, I shoved a book in a bag and cycled over there. It turned out to not really have an A&E department, but after sitting in a deserted, low-lit waiting room for half an hour – during which time I became increasingly nervy as my bladder filled enough for me to give a sample – I was seen, rather grudgingly, by a doctor much like Dr Now from the American obesity show, My 600lb Life. He scolded me for not being registered with a GP, but then kindly arranged an immediate blood test for me. The catch was, it was at Charing Cross Hospital. CCH isn’t in Charing Cross; it’s in Hammersmith. So I cycled down there, thinking of cancer, and dying just when my new book, Drapetomania, was in the running for two awards (one of which, the Ferro-Grumley, it went on to win.) They took my details, more treacly rust-coloured urine, some blood, and left me to wait.
I dug out the book I had brought with me. It was a slim collection of letters between Audre Lorde and fellow Black lesbian poet Pat Parker titled Sister Love. Though the letters were interesting and touching, my choice was, I quickly thought, a mistake, as both women battled, and ultimately succumbed to, breast cancer, and their letters shared this struggle and burden. Or perhaps it wasn’t a mistake, as what they shared landed on me as vividly as it was ever likely to do. My wait was lengthy, and during it I read the entire short book.
Audre Lorde is one of three Black feminists who have made a particularly powerful impact on me, and she perhaps settled deepest within me, though I came to her last.
At Leeds University in the early 1980s I studied a strangely hardcore form of Marxist-Structuralist early Third Wave feminist art history under the now-legendary Griselda Pollock. This was just before the rise of post-colonial studies and, while there were nods towards issues around race on my course – something I was investigating deeply in my private reading of Baldwin, Wright, Himes, Ellison and various other Black radical thinkers and activists – it was never a central concern.
By chance, browsing in the library, I came upon bell hooks’ Aint I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism, and borrowed it. I guess this became my first intersectional reading, and I devoured it eagerly. I went on to Angela Davis’s Women, Race and Class, and found that full of insights too – of course I’d learned of her while reading George Jackson, Baldwin, Huey Newton and others: America’s Most Wanted, with her trademark Afro. After struggling along with difficult post-modern theorists – Foucault, Baudrillard, Bhaba, Spivak etc – it was an incredible relief to read work that was clear, purposive, jargon-free and, while certainly intellectual, accessible and excitingly engaged with the world.
I’d first heard of Audre Lorde as a poet, but started to engage with her thought after reading a rather awkward conversation between her and James Baldwin: as with his longer conversation with Nikki Giovanni, it was in part a generational clash, or divide; in part about sex, gender and their meanings. This led me to read Lorde’s classic automythography, Zami, and then her intensely moving Cancer Journals and A Burst of Light, along collected interviews, essays and articles (mostly in Sister Outsider); and I later read the excellent biography by Alexis DeVeaux. Warrior Poet (now finally back in print.) Her insights were pithy, complex and concise. Check this out:
“Black women have on one hand always been highly visible, and so, on the other hand, have been rendered invisible through the depersonalization of racism.” (Sister Outsider)
Lorde inspired me by the  particular courage with which she lived her life, determined always to bring her whole self to any room she happened to be in, whether that made other people – and indeed herself – comfortable or not. ‘I am a black lesbian raising a son, in a relationship with a white Jewish woman’ was not an introductory remark that guaranteed a person a warm welcome in the late ’70s or early ’80s, even in radical circles; and nor did it. For her intersectionality was a lived, and a living thing – a warm and embodied thing – as well as an intellectual position. The personal was – is – political. As a white gay man in a relationship with a black man, she crystallised many things for me in a vivid, challenging and deeply humane way.
As an artist, she said, “When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” Though this formulation is unique to her, still I find it speaks strongly to me, as do many other things she said. Thank you, Audre.
Seven hours after I had first pissed blood, and mercifully cleared of fears of cancer, I stepped out with hard, tired eyes into the dazzling, commuter-crowded morning.

Author Interview with Junauda Petrus
There are two Black queer girls from two different Black cultures in this book falling in love.  What was it like writing a Caribbean and Black American protagonist?
As a first generation Caribbean-American author, I got to connect with the spectrum and multitudes of Blackness that shaped me through writing this book. Audre and Mabel represent aspects of who I am as a Black women who was raised in multiple Black cultures. My mother is Trinidadian and my father is from St. Croix, and I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I loved writing these girls, because they represented parts of me and the Black diaspora in a way that was eclectic, vibrant and healing.
In writing Audre and Mabel, I wanted to show them falling in love with a Black girl, that was a reflection of them, but also unique and magical in a way all her own. Their love is one that I longed to read as a young person. One that centered weird Black girls in a romantic love.
You traveled to Trinidad and Tobago to interview folks who are LGBTQIA on these islands. How did that research affect the story?
I wanted to depict with love, curiosity and expansiveness the experience of being queer in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). There are a lot of assumptions in the mainstream about the backwardness of attitudes towards LGBTQIA folks in the Caribbean region, and this isn’t the only truth. There is also the notion that folks in the U.S. are inherently more progressive and this is not the case. I learned from activists in T&T, that colonialism and religious evangelism from the west has fostered a lot of the homophobic sentiments that persist in the region.
I traveled to T&T to interview artists, students, activists, government employees, queer party organizers, etc to get their perspective on queer life in T&T. It was a true gift to hear Trinibagoans talk about their queerness and speak to the ways that they live out loud despite bigotry and ignorance about who they are. There were stories of people being exiled from family, as well as others who were embraced and accepted for their queerness. On a personal note, I traveled there with my wife, and was grateful for how we were embraced by my Trinidadian relatives in ways that was affirming and healing.
Tumblr media
Ancestral spirituality, astrology and natural healing are all themes in this book. Why were these themes important for you to include in this book?
With Audre and Mabel, I wanted them to explore relationships with the divine and the sacred that helped them navigate the world and challenges they were up against. As a young person, I loved anything that was mystical and otherworldly, things that seemed connected to intuition and spirit. I wanted these Black girls to be spiritual seekers in a way that empowered and blossomed them. They have to deal with some heavy and difficult realities that required spiritual skill sets that were ancestral, organic and cosmic. I have always loved astrology and love the ways that it has helped me see other realities within myself. The character of Queenie, Audre’s grandmother, represents how Black people can be spiritual in a way that is shaped out of intuition and deep listening.
Who are the authors who inspired you in writing this book?
As an 11 year-old, I found a book called The Friends, written by Rosa Guy and it was the first book that centered a Black Caribbean girl as the protagonist, and I felt I could relate to. I had always been an avid reader but reading Black women authors in my teen years is what made me want to write and process who I was on the page. I read a lot of Maya Angelou, Octavia Butler and Jamaica Kincaid. I am deeply influenced by poeticism and lyricism from writers like Ntozake Shange and Nikki Giovanni. I fell in love with Alice Walker and the way she wrote Black women’s interiors in a way that was beautiful, sensual, and complex. Toni Morrison, who has just passed and is a literary goddess AND genius, taught me how to be unapologetically experimental and otherworldly. She showed how you could write Black life, while making it accessible in its mundane and honesty of who we are. I have discovered, Alexis DeVeaux and Sharon Bridgforth, in my later years who are mentors of mine and have helped me feel affirmed in writing Black queer stories.
The relationship between Whitney Houston and her best friend Robyn Crawford is a major theme in this book. What inspired that theme?
In this book Whitney Houston represents invisible queerness within Black memory as well as the greater culture. A couple months into writing the book, her legacy unlocked a dimension of the book that was needed for me to understand the erasure of queerness within Black life and memory.
When I was growing up in the 1980s I idolized Whitney Houston. She was beautiful, elegant and had a voice and presence that was bewitching. She was one of the Black celebrity icons that took the grit and gospel of Black life, and made it into an expansive and tender world for the mainstream. I didn’t learn until 2006 when I was in my twenties living in New York City about Whitney and her long-time best friend, Robyn and how central a figure she was to Houston’s life and career. Learning about this bond that was deep and most likely romantic, made Whitney make more sense to me. I loved re-imagining them in ways for this book that wasn’t tinged with stigma and controversy, but instead love and sweetness.

Fave sad book recommendations? I've been having a hard month and it's nice to see your sadness structured before you. Also if you know any wlw novels, my lesbian ass would love something that's not blatantly sexualized or cookie cutter.
i’m sorry you’re having a hard time, my favorite book that I’ve ever read with a broken heart is The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. Another really amazing book that will kind of carry you away is East of Eden by John Steinbeck, which is probably my favorite book. It’s got the entire spectrum of human emotion in it, and you’ll for sure find a bit of yourself in one of the characters. Everyone does.
As far as a novel that has more queer representation, you absolutely have to read Yabo by Alexis DeVeaux!!!! It’s a gorgeous and abstract story about the immense pleasure and pain that is involved in queer loving, as well as how that conflates with Blackness and racial identity in both the present and the past. It’s so beautiful, I really think all LGBTQ identified folx should read it.
I hope you feel better soon. Message me if you need to! And definitely message me if you read any of those books.

Family, Gender and Sexuality
BACK TO THE FATHERLAND
Directors: Kat Rohrer, Gil Levanon
Back to the Fatherland is the story of young people leaving their home country to try their luck somewhere else... a universal tale in today's globalized world. The difference in this story is that these young people are moving from Israel to Germany and Austria - countries where their families were persecuted and killed less than a century ago.
This deeply human and revealing film explores the challenges and opportunities for reconciliation and understanding between the Third Generation on both sides of the Shoah.

CHASING PORTRAITS
Director: Elizabeth Rynecki
Moshe Rynecki (1881-1943) was a prolific Warsaw-based artist who painted scenes of the Polish-Jewish community until he was murdered at Majdanek. After the Holocaust, Moshe's wife was only able to recover a small fraction of his work, but unbeknownst to the family, many other pieces survived.
For more than a decade his great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rynecki, has searched for the missing art, with remarkable and unexpected success. Spanning three generations, Chasing Portraits is a deeply moving narrative of the richness of one man's art, the devastation of war, and one woman's unexpected path to healing.

QUIET HEROES
Directors: Jenny Mackenzie, Jared Ruga, Amanda Stoddard
In Salt Lake City, Utah, the religious monoculture severely complicated the AIDS crisis, where patients received no support from-or were cast into exile by-the political, religious, and medical communities. Further, Mormon culture encouraged gay men to marry women and have a family to cure themselves of their "affliction," counsel which led to secret affairs and accidental marital transmissions of HIV. In the entire state and intermountain region there was only one doctor to serve all HIV/AIDS patients. This is the story of her fight to save the lives of a maligned population everyone else seemed willing to just let die.
Dr. Kristen Ries came to Salt Lake City with the hope and ambition to set up a medical practice of her own. By chance, she arrived on the exact same day the CDC released a report about a new infectious disease affecting populations of gay men. This intrigued Dr. Ries and she launched her long career as the premier specialist who treated HIV/AIDS patients. What started as hospice care for highly stigmatized individuals became a model for compassionate care at the height of the AIDS epidemic. She faced stigma and blame in a repressive religious culture and had to find creative ways to serve her patients. She and her Physician's Assistant, Maggie Snyder, developed backdoor patient policies, underground drug markets, and status confidentiality policies to give their patients the best possible chance at prolonging their lives-or at worst, dying comfortably. When their families, their churches and social circles, their politicians, and even other doctors had abandoned them, Kristen Ries and Maggie Snyder created a safe haven amidst a sea of hate and fear for those who had nowhere else to turn.

SUNDAY SESSIONS, THE
Director: Richard Yeagley
The Sunday Sessions is an intimate portrait of one man's struggle to reconcile his religious conviction and sexual identity. The feature length documentary follows Nathan Gniewek, a gay man in his late twenties, as he seeks counseling from conversion therapist Christopher Doyle.
Conversion therapy is the controversial, non-scientifically based process which aims to convert an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. Although it has been discredited by all major American medical, psychiatric, psychological and professional counseling organizations, some therapists still offer the service for reasons almost exclusively rooted in a conservative religious belief system.
The filmmakers had unfettered access to individual therapy sessions, family sessions, and a collection of weekend camps, and have crafted an emotional and psychological thriller which chronicles two years of Nathan's journey from acceptance to skepticism, all leading to a profound epiphany.

THAT WAY MADNESS LIES
Director: Sandra Luckow
What do you do when your brother descends into a black hole of mental instability - starting with falling for a Nigerian email scam but eventually winding up involuntary committed into the hospital made famous by 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'?
Award-winning filmmaker Sandra Luckow unflinchingly turns her camera on her own family as they attempt to navigate the broken mental health system in an effort to save their brother, Duanne, whose iPhone video diary ultimately becomes an unfiltered look at the mind of a man with untreated schizophrenia as well as an indictment of how the system failed.
DVD / 2018 / 101 minutes
BREAST ARCHIVES, THE
Director: Meagan Murphy
Real women reveal their breasts and uncover personal truths in this gently provocative documentary exploring embodiment, womanhood, and the power of being seen.
The Breast Archives features nine women's personal stories of empowerment. Baring their breasts and their hearts, the women share the unique journeys they've made with their bodies, from their formative years of hiding, shame, and disconnection to adulthood and the discovery of what it means to be a powerful woman. As the women slowly reconnect with their body-based stories they find a reservoir of strength and wisdom that lies within their breasts.

LIVES: VISIBLE/LEFTOVERS
By Michelle Citron
LIVES: VISIBLE (2017, 35 mins): Lesbians in a box... two thousand private snapshots hidden away for over fifty years reveal the rich history of Chicago's working class butch/fem life in the pre-Stonewall era. Spanning four decades, from the 1930s to the early 1970s, the snapshots provide a rare look at a vanished and vibrant Lesbian culture: images of lovers and friends as they played, posed, serially switched partners, worked, partied, drank, and aged. Now we all take selfies; these women used a Brownie camera to tell the story of their community. LIVES: VISIBLE explores the ephemeral nature of culture and the power of the images we make.
LEFTOVERS (2014, 23 mins): Norma and Virginia were lovers for almost fifty years. They died isolated; the vibrant pre-Stonewall lesbian community of their youth long gone. A love story about the unforeseen trajectory of lives lived outside the mainstream told through the 2000 snapshots left behind.

A locked door inside a Belgrade home has kept one family separated from their past for generations. An intimate conversation between the director and her mother, the dynamic activist and scholar Srbijanka Turajlic, reveals a house and a country haunted by history. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW I FEEL
By Su Friedrich
Su Friedrich has taken up the camera again in her ongoing quest to film the battleground of family life. Her mother Lore - who played the lead in The Ties That Bind (1984), a film about her experiences growing up in Germany during the Second World War - plays the lead again, this time kicking and protesting against being moved at the age of 94 from her home in Chicago.
Su and her two siblings fill out the supporting roles, cajoling, comforting, and freaking out, but they cannot deny that their mother is no longer able to care for herself. Lore has severe memory loss and is convinced that her doorman has been robbing her. She often asks Su the same question repeatedly and cannot remember what she ate for breakfast. In an effort for Su and her siblings to be closer to her, they move her from her home of 50 years to an "independent living" facility in Long Island, New York.
I Cannot Tell You How I Feel is heartfelt examination of growing old in today's society, and the responsibility of adult children to their parents.

BEYOND MY GRANDFATHER ALLENDE
By Marcia Tambutti Allende
More than 40 years have passed since a military coup in Chile deposed the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende. The death of Allende and the years of military dictatorship that followed have left deep scars in both the country and in Allende's immediate family. In BEYOND MY GRANDFATHER ALLENDE (ALLENDE MI ABUELO ALLENDE), his granddaughter Marcia Tambutti Allende goes in search of Salvador Allende the man.
She attempts to reconstruct the past through informal interviews with her family, quickly discovering that they don't talk about "Chico," as he was affectionately known. Memories of him have been buried deep and seem too painful to drag up. Nevertheless, the filmmaker's aged grandmother slowly but surely becomes accustomed to her compassionate but sharp interviewing style and starts to talk more about Allende, her marriage and her role as the president's wife. Other members of the family, many of whom never knew Allende personally, also start to talk.
Marcia goes in search of family photos and videos, and as a result we get to know the kind of man her grandfather was. The film also provides a thorough impression of the complex political situation of the Allende family over the past 40 years.

DEEP RUN
By Hillevi Loven, Susan Sarandon
DEEP RUN is a powerful verite portrait of trans life in rural North Carolina. Exiled by her family and rejected by an ex-partner, 17-year-old Spazz has no one to lean on for support. But when Spazz falls in love again and summons up the courage to become Cole, a strong-willed trans-man, his candid humor and steadfast, all-inclusive Christian beliefs counter the bigotry he experiences daily.
This deeply personal documentary reveals rebirth and courage within America's deeply conservative Bible Belt as Cole struggles to find a church that will affirm his identity and the couple's relationship. With a small group of supportive friends, relatives, and his girlfriend, Ashley, Cole's search for love and belonging leads him to a radical revision of what faith and church can be. An intimate study of young outsiders in an insular Christian community, DEEP RUN explores the intersection of modern identity and faith in the American South. Essential viewing for LGBTQIA Audiences, Queer and Gender studies classes.

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD
Directed by Sharon Shattuck
Tells the story of a love, and family, that survived the most intimate of transformations.
With her own wedding just around the corner, filmmaker Sharon Shattuck returns home to examine the mystery at the heart of her upbringing: How her transgender father Trisha and her straight-identified mother Marcia stayed together against all odds. From This Day Forward is a moving portrayal of an American family coping with the most intimate of transformations.
As the film evolves into a conversation about love and acceptance in a modern American family, it raises questions relevant to all of us. As individuals how do we adapt to sustain long-term love and relationships? Where do sexuality and gender intersect? And how do families stay together, when external forces are pulling them apart?

NO HOME MOVIE
By Chantal Akerman
"At the center of Chantal Akerman's enormous body of work is her mother, a Holocaust survivor who married and raised a family in Brussels. In recent years, the filmmaker has explicitly depicted, in videos, books, and installation works, her mother's life and their own intense connection to each other. No Home Movie is a portrait by Akerman, the daughter, of Akerman, the mother, in the last years of her life. It is an extremely intimate film but also one of great formal precision and beauty, one of the rare works of art that is both personal and universal, and as much a masterpiece as her 1975 career-defining Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles." - New York Film Festival, Film Society of Lincoln Center

SAME DIFFERENCE, THE
By Nneka Onuorah
THE SAME DIFFERENCE is a compelling documentary about lesbians who discriminate against other lesbians based on gender roles. Director Nneka Onuorah takes an in-depth look at the internalized hetero-normative gender roles that have become all too familiar within the African American lesbian and bisexual community. Onuorah shows how these behaviors reproduce the homophobic oppression and masculine privilege of the straight world, while looking for solutions in compelling discussions with community members. Self-identified studs - and the women who love them - discuss hypocrisy in terms of gender roles, performative expectations, and the silent disciplining that occurs between community members. This film features many queer celebrities, including actress Felicia "Snoop" Pearson from the critically acclaimed HBO drama The Wire, and Lea DeLaria from Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, living daily with opinions about how identity should be portrayed. Onuorah's engaging documentary shines a light on the relationships and experiences within the queer black female community, intersecting race, gender and sexuality. Required viewing for Women's, Gender and Queer Studies.

STRAY DOG
Directed by Debra Granik
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Debra Granik ("Winter's Bone") returns to SW Missouri for her first documentary, looking at the life of Vietnam vet, Ron "Stray Dog" Hall, and shattering some stereotypes.
Ron "Stray Dog" Hall lives in Southern Missouri where he owns and operates the At Ease RV Park. After years of living alone with his dogs, he is adjusting to life with his wife, Alicia, who is newly arrived from Mexico. Anchored by his small dogs and big bikes, Stray Dog seeks to strike a balance between his commitment to his family, neighbors, biker brotherhood, and fellow veterans. As part of the legacy of fighting in the Vietnam War, he wrestles with the everlasting puzzle of conscience, remorse, and forgiveness.
With Stray Dog as our guide, we experience the restlessness of ex-warriors as he tries to make peace with what he can't change and weathers the incomprehension of those who have never been to war. Stray Dog navigates the pressures of everyday life including the economic survival of his grandchildren and the increasing poverty of his community. The arrival of Alicia's twin sons from Mexico throws into harsh relief the current state of opportunity that newcomers seek and that America can or cannot offer.
Stray Dog continues to tally the cost of war, bearing witness to the soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan: both the dead and the living. The questions of contemporary American life loom larger and thornier, leaving us to wonder what is next for Stray Dog and his blended, multi-ethnic family.

FORGET ME NOT: LOSING MEMORY - FINDING LOVE
Directed by David Sieveking
An astonishingly candid, loving and revelatory chronicle of the changes his mother's Alzheimer's disease has on the filmmaker's family.
Leading documentary filmmaker David Sieveking (David Wants to Fly) weaves an astonishingly candid, loving and revelatory chronicle of the changes his mother's Alzheimer's has on his family.
Although dealing with his mother's disease is painful, caring for her does offer Sieveking a chance to reconnect with his family and immerses himself in the secrets and passions of his parents long and fascinating life. Some stories are heroic, while others have left a painful legacy in the couple's long marriage.
Throughout, Sieveking's delicate handling of these revelations moves the focus of the story away from his mother's irreversible mental decline to that of a loving tribute to his mother as a human being with a remarkable life story. What emerges is a poignant and rich study of family ties, the delicate nature of marriage, and the unexpected rewards that come from living life to the fullest.

LESBIANA: A PARALLEL REVOLUTION
By Myriam Fougere
A parallel, lesbian-feminist revolution was born out of the women's and civil rights movements of the 60's and 70's. Filmmaker Myriam Fougere's takes us on a road trip through the United States and Canada as she revisits the activists of the time who sparked this revolution to define their own culture. As active second-wave feminists, many lesbian women began to recognize that their sexual identity was not acknowledged or embraced by the traditional women's movement. These artists, musicians, philosophers, and writers sought to establish communities centered exclusively on women where patriarchy simply did not exist. Women-only communities began to flourish in North America and around the world, resulting in a rich and vibrant culture that inspired important lesbian art, literature, and music. Told through photographs, archival footage, and contemporary interviews, Fougere's film serves not only as a testament to the politics of the era, but also as a living yearbook and virtual reunion of these remarkable women, who laid the groundwork for generations to come.

ORCHIDS: MY INTERSEX ADVENTURE
By Phoebe Hart
Gen X filmmaker Phoebe Hart always knew she was different growing up - but she didn't know why. This award-winning documentary traces Phoebe's voyage of self-discovery as an intersex person, a group of conditions formerly termed hermaphroditism. Learning only in her teens that she was born with 46XY (male) chromosomes, Hart now seeks to understand her own story and the stories of others affected by this complex and often shameful syndrome.
With help from sister Bonnie (also born with the same condition) and support from partner James, Hart drives across Australia, interviewing individuals whose struggles and victories mirror and differ from her own. Some advocate systemic change ending shame and controversial genital surgeries, while others debate coming out or staying closeted with a stigmatized secret. Questioning rigidly defined constructs of gender, sexuality, and normality, often with lively good humor, ORCHIDS is the first film to look at intersex from a positive perspective. Its engaging portrait of survival, courage and reconciliation will speak to a variety of audiences and spark lively discussion about what it means to be perceived as "different."

GIRL INSIDE
By Maya Gallus
Following 26-year-old Madison during a crucial three years of her transition from male to female, GIRL INSIDE is a beautiful film that tracks her emotional, intellectual and spiritual journey of self-discovery that is as important as - if not more than - the physical journey of hormones and surgery. Sharing the spotlight is Vivien, Madison's glamorous 80-year-old grandmother, who has taken on the job of advising her on all things feminine. While Vivien's attempts to school Madison in old-fashioned codes of fashion and behavior are often hilarious, the juxtaposition of two vastly different experiences of womanhood, from very different generations, raises profound issues about the nature of gender, femininity and sexuality.
Sometimes funny, sometimes painful, this heartwarming coming of age story is both an intimate portrait and a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be a woman. Recommended for courses in transgender and queer studies, gender studies, women's studies and sociology.

BOY I AM
By Sam Feder & Julie Hollar
An important exploration of issues rarely touched upon by most films portraying female-to-male (FTM) transgender experiences, this feature-length documentary sets itself apart from other recent films on this topic. Tackling the resistance of some women in feminists and lesbian communities who view FTM transitioning as at best a "trend" or at worst an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege, this groundbreaking film opens up a dialog between the lesbian, feminist, and transgender communities while also promoting understanding of transgender issues for general audiences.
In the course of the film, three young transitioning FTMs in New York City- Nicco, Norie and Keegan- go through major junctures in their transitions, discussing everything from their relationships with their bodies, feminism, and the intersection of race and class with their transgender identity. Their stories are interspersed with interviews with lesbians, activists and theorists who engage with the often-contentious questions and issues that are raised within the queer and feminist communities but are rarely discussed openly. Situating these struggles and stories as inextricably linked to queer and feminist struggles, BOY I AM presents an empowering chronicle of queer resistance that challenges all viewers to rethink their concepts of activism and identity.

MOTHERHOOD MANIFESTO, THE
Looks at the obstacles facing working mothers and families and the employer and public policy changes needed to restore work-life balance.
Did you know that...
Only four countries in the world- Lesotho, Swaziland, Papua New Guinea and the United States-fail to provide paid maternity leave to all workers? Canada now guarantees a full year of paid parental leave and California recently became the first state in the U.S. to provide such paid leave? Businesses that create flexible work environments find that productivity goes up, they attract more talent, turnover is reduced and their bottom line is improved?
Moving personal stories combined with humorous animation, expert commentary and hilarious old film clips tell the tale of what happens to working mothers and their families in America. See how enlightened employers and public policy can make paid family leave, flexible working hours, part-time parity, universal healthcare, excellent childcare, after-school programs and realistic living wages a reality for American families.
The film is based on the book The Motherhood Manifesto by Joan Blades and Kristin Rowe- Finkbeiner.

BOY NAMED SUE, A
By Julie Wyman
Julie Wyman's compelling documentary chronicles the transformation of a transsexual named Theo from a woman to a man over the course of six years. The film successfully captures Theo's physiological and psychological changes during the process, as well as their effects on his lesbian lover and community of close friends. Taking full advantage of the unlimited access she received into an extraordinarily personal process, Wyman carefully composes a moving story about gender identity, relationships, and how even things that seem permanent can change.

OUTLAW
By Alisa Lebow
Leslie Feinberg, a self-identified "gender outlaw" who has spent much of her life passing as a man, speaks with passion and intelligence about her experiences in this video manifesto. Raw and confrontational, this videotape asks its audience to examine their assumptions about the "nature" of gender and calls for more sensitivity and awareness of the human rights and the dignity of transgendered people. Feinberg is the author of Stone Butch Blues (Firebrand), an account of a working-class lesbian who passes as a man.

Whose baby child are you?
Tumblr media
It was a simple tradition - a cold calculation that preserved the absolute authority of the patriarchy: a child’s condition followed the condition of her mother. This evidence trumps questions that arise from naked observation. The child of an enslaved woman- no matter the father’s racial heritage or the child's appearance - is a slave. Therefore controls for slavery and racial mixing become efforts to proscribe intercourse and procreation between black men and white women with special attention that no child of this heritage be allowed into whiteness. And, as the tradition has been that white men will allow into whiteness what offspring they choose, a patriarchy has vested interest in social segregation along racial lines.
"These mountain people -- these hideouts -- these residents of Russell's Knob are a jumbled-up people, Emil Branch thought. They're made up of whatever is thrown together in a pile. They're the children of amalgamators. They're the children of whites who won't stay white and reds who won't stay red and blacks who won't stay black. Call them jumbles or hodgepodge people or whatever harsh moniker you can stick onto them. His own mama had come from here amongst them. Thank God his father had whitened him and raised him amongst decent, white folk. Emil Branch realized that he despised the bit of himself that connected him to Russell's Knob, though he loved his mother."
from ANGELS MAKE THEIR HOPE HERE
How does a community that is descended from a core group of women uprooted from their traditions who, rather than be estranged from their beliefs, amalgamated these beliefs and traditions with their husbands’ beliefs and built a town — a place to be and live? In successive generations, the courage of women was honored and cultivated in Russell’s Knob though deference to the obvious advantages of men for hunting, fishing, animal handling, speech-making and governance, was conceded. With whom does the balance of power lie when the efforts of all are appreciated and needed and contributed? Those who survive. The People of Russell’s Knob are survivors above all.
"If your women are not brave, it will not matter that your men are. For your children will not live long and your People will perish."
Russell Sitton, 1780,  founder of Russells Knob
