One of my favorite films of 2023 is a sweet and hilarious romantic comedy called RYE LANE, the directorial debut of Raine Allen Miller, it takes place in South London and stars Vivian Oparah and David Johnsson
I LOVED the way color and camera were used in this film, and it always pleases me to highlight good and trauma film featuring Blk folks.

The Free Black Women鈥檚 Library, which started as a mobile library book swapping social art project in 2015 is now over eight years old.
2023 marks two years of us having our own brick and mortar space and having a home base has helped the project grow and develop into all that I imagined it could be and more.
This year birthed some lovely initiatives, opportunities and moments. We have become a community resource, creative hub, social site and care space for many.
If we raise enough money we can keep these good vibes going in 2024.
Help us make it happen by donating to our crowdfunding campaign at

Thank you 鈾ワ笍馃コ

T锘縣e Free Black Women's Library is thrilled to host interdisciplinary artist and educator Desiree Mwalimu-Banks, with a special screening and discussion of her film Transmissions From The Sacred Feminine: A Labyrinth Journey Into The Center of The Hive
This experimental film stitches together global narratives of the sacred feminine to the story of her becoming an artist, priestess, and daughter of the African Diaspora. It s also an articulation of the water mandala, a foundational blueprint that circumscribes water鈥檚 ability to conceive, nourish, purify, and re-member its mark.
T锘縣is 34-minute film is presented in a series of 13 sections, based on the phases of the moon according to the life-cycle of a honeybee, and described through the storytelling vehicle of the water mandala. While the bee鈥檚 journey in the hive throughout the phases of the moon represents a measured archetypal chronology, the film is presented both in and out of time, using a non-linear sequencing framework.
Throughout this weaving, viewers are invited into and out of these spiraling dimensions of the labyrinth.
We will engage in a special meditation activation prior to watching the film, with a community discussion to follow across both live and virtual platforms.
L锘縤ght refreshments will be provided.
A锘縧l are welcome to attend.
