From Mexico and South America Tillandsia species (air plants) are members of the Bromeliaceae (bromeliad family). The plants do not root in soil but use short, wiry roots to attach themselves to branches, cliff-faces, and even overhead wires. The leaves are coated in specialised water-absorbent cells called trichomes which in some species are so dense they give the plants a silvery appearance. The trichomes are the main method of obtaining moisture from atmosphere.
I used to kill them hardcore, but it was because I didn't understand their needs. I didn't water then enough, they were not getting enough light either.
Once I started submerging them in water for at least three hours and then letting them dry in a soft towel for the same amount of time and repeating this about every 2-3 weeks, they have been super happy!
(if you have baby airplants, they might need watering more often, but most of mine are medium size)
This memory of the orange orchid popped up in it’s totality before we split it up - isn’t it amazing?!🤩🤙🏻🏝️ #orchid #orchids #flowers #flowerlovers #flowerpower #flowerporn #flowerphotography #flowerstagram #instaflower #plants #plantlover #landscape #nature #kauai #kauailife #hawaiilife #islandlife #orange #airplants #shotoniphone (at Princeville Kauai) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpS_7t8PZW8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I always thank the mama for all the hard work, but also promise her that I'll take a good care and look after her babies. She goes, babies grow, the cycle. Sad and beautiful at the same time 🥹
