Transforming Traffic Safety: The Effects of Virtual Driving Education in Virginia
This shift is especially notable in the field of driver education. Online driving lessons provide a more convenient and adaptable option to traditional driving schools, making them more competitive. A Re-Examination Course and a series of Driving Improvement Clinics have become well-liked options in Virginia for anyone looking to improve their driving abilities or meet certain legal requirements.
Operating Enhancement Clinics throughout Virginia:
Driving Improvement Clinic Richmond: One of the best examples of how online learning has brought driver education up to date is the Driving Improvement Clinic in Richmond. Enrolling in this clinic may help participants improve their driving abilities, handle moving offenses, or be eligible for lower insurance rates.
Lynchburg Driving Improvement Clinic: Residents may now register for a driving improvement clinic online if they're looking for a handy method to go. Important subjects covered in the clinic include traffic regulations, defensive driving strategies, and the risks associated with drunk driving.
Driving Improvement Clinic Petersburg: The online Driving Improvement Clinic in Petersburg provides a thorough curriculum to treat a range of driving-related difficulties. The course may be finished at the individual's speed, enabling customized learning.
Driving Improvement Clinic Winchester: Thanks to an online clinic that was created to match hectic schedules, residents of Winchester may now take advantage of this service. A variety of subjects are covered throughout the course to encourage safe and responsible driving.
Driving Improvement Clinic Virginia Beach: Being a seaside city, Virginia Beach offers its citizens access to an online driving clinic that is customized to meet their requirements. This workshop covers frequent driving concerns and instructs participants on how to prevent accidents.
Driving Improvement Clinic Hampton: Residents of Hampton may now sign up for an online driving improvement clinic. The training material emphasizes appropriate driving habits and complies with statutory requirements.
Chesapeake Driving Improvement Clinic: Residents of Chesapeake may now choose to finish an online driving clinic. For anyone looking to improve their driving habits or resolve traffic offenses, this format offers a convenient and adaptable option.
Benefits of Online Driving Instruction:
Practicality and Adaptability:
The ease that online driving lessons provide is one of its main benefits. There is schedule flexibility since students may access the course materials and do the tasks whenever they want. Those with hectic schedules or variable work hours would especially benefit from this.
Economical:
Online driving schools often turn out to be more affordable than conventional, on-site instruction. In some cases, participants may even get a discount on course fees in addition to saving on transportation costs. Furthermore, people may be able to continue working while fulfilling their driving education needs thanks to the flexibility of online classes.
The proliferation of online driving courses in Virginia, as shown by the Re-Examination Course in Lexington and the Driving Improvement Clinics located around the state, is indicative of a profound change in the way people approach driver education. Residents from Richmond to Virginia Beach are drawn to these online courses because of their accessibility, flexibility, and ease of use. Online driving courses have a bright future ahead of them because of technological improvements, which makes them a crucial part of Virginia's efforts to improve driver education and road safety.

chapter eleven: the end of the world
The next morning was a cold, gray, and soggy one, but Sam had no intention on returning to Louie's apartment for another round that day: she had already packed her things in the back seat and she nestled down in the front seat with her arms folded across her chest and the lapels of her jacket pulled up to her ears. She had no hood or something to cover her head but she wished for one. She didn't want to be seen. Louie himself meanwhile, locked the door behind him and he headed down the steps. She looked on at him as he rounded the front end of the car and opened the door. She sighed through her nose as he climbed into the front seat.
“You okay?” he asked her in a low voice, and she nodded her head.
“Look—I was thinking about this last night before I fell asleep, too,” he started, “neither of us mean to inflame or kick up any old wounds with anyone. We're just—fooling around, messing around, you know?”
She gazed out the window right as he said that. She had nothing to say to that.
“If either of us made you uncomfortable—and I can tell we did—we didn't mean to. I didn't mean to, and I know Alex didn't mean to, either. And for that, I want to personally apologize to you for it.”
Sam never moved from her spot in the seat next to him. She couldn't hardly stop thinking about any of what went down the night before, such that it almost brought a tear to her eye.
“Also—I, uh—” he stammered and then he cleared his throat, “—hate to tell you this, but I'm kinda out of money.”
She turned her attention over to him and frowned.
“What do you mean you're out of money?” she demanded.
“I'm out of money,” he repeated, “well, for now anyway. Remember what I said yesterday, I had enough for breakfast and a cab?”
“Oh, right, right.” She hesitated. “So what's this mean?”
“Well, I have a full tank of fuel to start with,” he stated, to which she frowned and scoffed at that.
“Louie, we're not driving back to Elsinore from here—it's too far.” She was scorn.
“But the train already left, though,” he pointed out. “It's kind of overkill to fly on down to Elsinore, too.”
She sighed through her nose again.
“Don't really feel like driving through the valley, either,” he added.
“Yeah, it's boring as hell,” she said in a soft voice.
“Boring as hell and still hot as fuck, too,” he said, “at least here we have a bit of leeway with the San Francisco fog. Seven hours of nothin'.” He paused for a second. “We could take the coast.”
“That's longer, though,” she pointed out.
“Nicer, though,” he insisted.
“True. It's way nicer, actually.”
“Bet you've missed the Pacific Coast, too,” he said.
“I have—it's one of the many things I haven't been able to do like at all. Especially when I was growing up out here.”
“Really?” Louie was genuinely taken aback by that.
“Yeah.”
“Well, let's—” He set his hand on the ignition key and turned it. “Let's.”
Sam strapped herself in and Louie shook his head of hair about a bit.
“One thing I really wanted to do with Zelda,” he started again as he pulled on the parking lever, “when we were together was go on a road trip with her somewhere. I always considered driving from Providence down to some place like D.C., or go all the way down to like West Virginia. The two of us on a trip together and just hanging out together.”
“What kept you from doing it?” she asked him.
“Touring and making albums—and dealing with record company horse shit in her case—and in my case it was living a double life. There was no way I could do it, not with my other life in full swing.”
They pulled ahead and began up the block, around the cemetery and towards the block on the other side.
“So—I haven't really taken the Pacific Coast Highway much from my place so just kind of—like—bear with me here,” he sputtered.
“It's okay, it's okay.”
Louie glanced over at her at one point as they rolled up to a stoplight.
“You know—and I'm being perfectly honest with you here, Sam—I'm a little intimidated by you,” he confessed.
“You?” she asked him.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“I dunno,” he replied with a shake of his head, “but there's just something about you that completely intimidates me. Like it's hard for me to maintain composure when I'm near you.”
“There's no reason to be, though,” she promised him.
“But I feel it anyways, though. It could be because you made a bold move in moving across the country and back again, but I can't really say for sure.”
“Funny you say that 'cause you did that,” she pointed out.
“True. But see, you weren't living a double life like I was.”
“I mean, I kinda am now,” she assured him.
“How so?”
“Joey doesn't know about Bill. He also doesn't know that I'm hanging out with you guys, either. For the record, Bill doesn't know that I'm hanging out with you guys, either. It's like a triangle of sorts with me come to think of it.”
“A delta,” said Louie.
“A delta?”
“Yeah. You know the Greek letter delta?”
“Oh, yeah, yeah!”
“Apparently in the realm of science, it's symbolic of change. Like change in temperature or heat.”
“How do you know that?”
“I dunno if she's shown you this but Morgan—you know, Morgan from the Cherry Suicides—has this old chemistry textbook back at her place. She found it in the garbage believe it or not.”
“Something wrong about that,” Sam declared.
“Oh, yeah. Unless it's actually trash, books do not belong in the trash. But yeah, she found it and I just happened to prop it open one day, and I read a tidbit in a chapter about equations at one point.”
“Huh. Bill has a bunch of old books at his place—mostly old literature, but it's worth a peek, though. I keep meaning to crack them open but I'm not sure where to begin.”
The light turned green and Louie lunged ahead on the street. The clouds hung even lower over them as he merged lanes and they headed for the 880 Freeway. To the right of them was the stretch of gray waters that made up the very Bay itself.
“If you ever come back up here this way,” he started again, “you know you're in a car on the P.C.H., you've got to cross the Golden Gate Bridge at some point. There's just—something majestic about it, even if you've lived here your whole life like the five of us. Well, four of us, anyway, unless Chuck was telling a fib about where he was born. This will take us right by Santa Clara and down to the interchange in San Jose, which'll in turn take us all the way down the coastline to the City of Angels.”
Sam nodded her head and she peered out the windshield to the gray overhead. To think that the assumption with the California coast was all bright sunshine and infinite beaches: it made her laugh the more in which she thought about it.
“What's even the deal with him, anyway?” Louie asked her out of the blue.
“Who, Bill?” She looked over at him with her eyebrows knitted together and he took a glimpse over at her.
“Yeah.”
“Well,” she began, “I mean, you were sitting right there when I called Chuck and told him what was going on.”
“Pff, how could I forget? But what I'm asking is—is there like a time limit with him? Like you signed a marriage contract plus a prenup but surely someone over at the school has to figure that out at some point because it's totally illegal. Setting you up like that and forcing you into something that you had no desire to get into and then threatening a whole bunch of bullshit with you like locking you in your room and forbidding you from going out and visiting people.”
“Well, when I first came out here and I spoke to Marla over the phone—you know, she's been trying to get a job and she finally did with Belinda up in Albany. But she went to the school and she told them that he was still on the payroll. He got fired, Louie, but there was some weird glitch of some sort so he still got paid and he got paid a lot of money, too. So he was able to afford that large house and care for his daughters, such that he enlisted them in a private school.”
“So he loses his paycheck, he's fucked, basically,” he followed along.
“Yeah. Unless he got something to help him out when we weren't looking, he's probably got to pull the girls out of school and sell the house.”
“And what happens to you if and when that happens?” he asked her.
“I—” She froze. Louie glanced over at her with his eyebrows raised. “I—don't know. Oh, wait!” She snapped her fingers.
“What's that?”
“My mom's moving down to the Southland soon. Where exactly is another question, though. She might be going out to Catalina or she might be going to San Pedro, I dunno.”
“Or you can go back to Joey,” he pointed out. “You know, make things easier on your mom. It's another cross country, for sure, but I feel it'd be more beneficial to take that risk again and go with him rather than put extra pressure on your mom like that. But that's my opinion, though. You do whatever you want.”
“There should be a way to null it, too,” she added.
“Yeah, being in a car with another dude,” he joked, and that brought a laugh out of her.
Within time, signs for the interchange came into their view and Louie took the next exit which looped around and met up with the Pacific Coast Highway. Right as they matched up with the pavement, the clouds over them swirled about like the old feathers or the wisps of paint mixed into the wash for a watercolor project. She looked out to the low hills off to the right, all of them different shades of green and yellow. All of them still that rich green despite the late summer. All of them still rich dark green despite the yellow dead grass everywhere. The clouds overhead beckoned rain but at the same time waned away from the coast line.
Such a strange position to be in as was the state of California, but that pocket there, the hills that followed her and Louie all along the highway on that lengthy seven hour drive, reminded her of that special place.
The quiet place. The spot that she and Charlie had found together and the place where she and Joey visited during their final days together.
“This is almost like the precious part of California,” she noted aloud.
“Nah, the eastern Sierra is the precious part of California in my opinion,” he said. “There's something lonely and ancient about the eastern Sierra Nevadas.”
“This whole area here reminds me of a place that Charlie and I found together when they were making the Stormtroopers of Death album,” she followed up.
“Really?”
“It was like this little nook in the trees down the street from the studio,” she explained as she returned her attention to him. “We called it 'the quiet place' because you go in there and it's like completely untouched in comparison to everything else. You walk down the street and you have to duck underneath the trees as you're going in there.”
“Sounds like something you keep a secret,” he remarked.
“I told Joey about it, though,” she told him. “I imagine upstate being covered in places like that.”
“Places you go to that no one else knows about,” he followed along. “This part of California and the eastern Sierra is like that, too. Lots of nooks and crannies and what have you. Like there's a place outside of Salinas—I'll have to show it to you when we get there. It's closer to Monterey Bay, though, which means we'll have to leave this highway, though.”
“It's okay—it'll get us over to the ocean.”
“The ocean makes everything better,” he remarked.
The highway took them down past Morgan Hill and then Gilroy: at one point the road turned towards Monterey Bay; off in the distance loomed those cold dark gray waters that seemed to stretch on forever. The view enlarged as they came closer and closer to the next turn off and the 156: Louie told her it would take them to Highway 1, which would in turn take them to the place he had in mind. At that point, the clouds increased and everything grew dark despite it being almost ten o'clock in the morning.
“While we're over here, you don't mind spending a little money for breakfast, do you?” he asked her at one point.
“Not at all. I was just gonna ask you if you're hungry at all.”
He showed her a grin in response, and then he pointed out the windshield to the next sign up ahead: the town of Castroville as well as the turn off to Highway 1.
“So anyway, this place—it's over by the Salinas River, which eventually heads out to the ocean,” he explained. “When I first met Zelda, and I was waffling on if I wanted to go with her or stay with my concurrent girlfriend and our baby, I always came here. It always helped me clear my head to drive down here when the baby fell asleep and Zelda was back in Rhode Island. I remember staying down here for a full afternoon once. Like I didn't get back home until well after the sun went down. Needless to say, I almost got in trouble for that.”
She laughed at that, and he gave his long smooth hair a little toss back from his face and the side of his neck.
“And the highway will take us all the way down the coastline, too. Take us down to Big Sur and all around the coast, all the way down to San Simeon and Cambria, and then Morro Bay, and then that'll take us over to San Luis Obispo and that's where we meet up with 101 again.”
“And that'll take us all the way back to L.A., too.”
He nodded his head at that, and then Sam cleared her throat.
“I don't think I get Alex,” she confessed.
“A lot of people don't,” he assured her with a straight face.
“It's funny, he said the exact same thing to me,” she recalled. “Word for word.”
“Well, because it's true! A lot of people don't get Alex. That kid is a bundle of contradictions, many of which are not for the faint of heart. I've only known him for a few years but can confirm that, though. And what's mind blowing to me is he's completely aware of it, too. I remember the first time I got into an in-depth conversation with him a few years ago when Testament first formed and we were still Legacy. Sam, I never had such a worse headache.”
“Well, like. For example, when we were in Germany and he and I spent a whole day together—”
“And he missed the train?” he finished for her. “Chuck told me.”
“Yeah, he missed the train and he got upset with me when I tried to grab his attention and get him to come onboard. Then the fireball happened and he realized the error of his ways and we patched it up. And then, you know last night, he opened up the wound over Cliff with me.”
“The fireball happened and what exactly did he do there?”
“I put my arms around him and held him close to me,” she explained. “Wept like a baby right into my chest.”
“He probably liked to feel your chest,” he pointed out.
“What makes you think that?”
“Sam—he's nineteen, soon to be twenty. When I was nineteen, that was all I ever thought about were touching and feeling boobs and clits. We're horny bastards at that age, and I would imagine that he is especially, too. Alex is bit of a nerd—it's the whole thing about how girls don't really talk to nerds.”
“But he's a guitar player, though. I would imagine the girls getting all hot and bothered to guitar players.”
“Not Alex and not our crowds, no. He's like the thinking man's guitarist. I'm sure you've seen him before a television.”
“Oh, yeah, he's all over news reports whenever they come on. Well, I was with you guys in Boston and he and Greg were right before the TV in the room there.”
“Oh, yeah, that's right! But still—at the end of the day, even with his large brain and social scientist parents, he's still a guy. And he probably wanted to feel something soft and warm and comfy.” Louie glimpsed over at her. “You said he was scared, right?”
“Yeah. It was right when that big fireball went up. He just—came over to me and burst into tears at the sight of it. I held him so close to me and I let him weep into my chest.”
“Well—if you see him next time, really pay attention to his behavior towards you,” he advised her. “If he's actually sincere with you, then it's probably because he's confused and his inexperience is showing. If not, like if he gets close to you again, then don't bother with him for a second longer.”
“What do you mean?”
“What I'm saying is he either wants you for you or he's using you,” he explained. “I wish I could tell you more about it, but I'm not Alex, though. I can only tell you what I know from being in between two women for a couple of years.” He shook his hair again and then raked his fingers through one side: outside, the signs for Castroville emerged from the scraggly shrubs on either side of the road.
“I imagine him being soft and sweet, though,” he confessed in a low voice, such that it took her aback to hear that.
“Is—there something about him that you see with him?” she sputtered out as she took a glimpse over at him with a bewildered look on her face. Louie bowed his head and cleared his throat.
“Let me ask you a question,” he said as he leaned his head closer to her.
“Okay.”
“Does it bother you at all—” She could tell that he chose his words with care. “—when a guy finds another guy attractive and it's obvious he's not gay at all?”
She opened her mouth to say something to that, but no sound came out.
“Take as much time as you need to answer that, too,” he assured her, “—I asked Zelda this once and she really had to think about it.”
She thought of all the times that she made art while in class, and she thought of the time that she drew Marla in her journal. It wasn't until she really got to know Marla as well as Belinda when she began to see them as a couple of beautiful women. Indeed, as she thought about their willingness to help her out even while she had posted up out on the West Coast, the more she wondered if the whole thing extended further than their smooth New Yorker skin. Further than Marla's colorful hair and further than Belinda's soft doll like features. There was something more to Alex, much like there was something more to Louie in the seat there next to her, and there had to be something more to herself as well. More to them all, and the fact that she and Louie both had a quiet place, a place where they went that fell on blind eyes, was enough to give her a clue.
The hidden spots and everything in between. It was only the beginning.
And thus it only made sense to her to realize that it resided with everyone, including Alex himself.
“No,” she replied after a long while. “No, it doesn't bother me at all.”
“Okay,” Louie proclaimed as they rolled into Castroville. “Sometimes I look at Alex and I think, 'god, he's a really beautiful boy. I imagine being the perfect cuddler, like he must be adept to snuggling and feeling soft underneath a bunch of blankets.' Not necessarily sexy, although he does have a nice chest and thighs.”
“Nice arms, too,” she said in a soft voice.
“Yeah, he's got those really lanky strong guitar player arms.”
“Hey, you've got nice arms, too, Lewis,” she declared.
“Drummer arms.” He shook his right elbow about: his muscles were tight and sinewy.
“Reminds me of Joey's arms,” she said.
“Oh, yeah, that's right! He's a drummer, too.”
“Drummer and a hockey player.”
Louie took the first exit off into that small town and Sam volunteered to buy the both of them cups of coffee and a couple of scones for themselves: she took a chocolate one where he took a peach one for himself.
Within time, they climbed back into the car and Louie guided her over to the spot in question, right down by the Salinas River and where it widened out before it reached the ocean in small narrow fashion. It was there that the shades of yellow that followed them out of the Bay Area returned to that rich dark green that reminded her of New York. The space in the forest outside of the studio where she and Charlie ventured to together, and then she and Joey visited under a blanket of pure white snow.
“We all have a quiet place,” she declared.
“We really do,” Louie said as he sipped on his coffee.
“We all have a house and a home, even if it isn't physical,” she said.
“Yeah, we all have an attic. We all have secrets. We all have things that we show to everyone.”
“We all have things that we've buried—skeletons in the closet,” she muttered.
“And we all have a quiet place,” he added with a raise of his eyebrows.
He took the next right turn, one that brought them down the Salinas River and away from civilization. All the while, the ponderosa pines stretched high up into the sky around them, all up into those low dark swirling clouds that enveloped them in a blanket of coziness. Soon, the pavement gave way to gravel and broken pieces of pavement itself; and every so often, Sam spotted a series of shrubs all over the places, shrubs with little light pink and pearly white flowers.
“The rhododendrons are still in bloom I see,” Louie remarked.
“I don't think I've actually seen those before,” she confessed; the whole scenery made her think of the hole in the wall back in Ithaca. “They only grow here on the coast and in northern Nevada, we have all manner of pines and trees but nothing like this, though. Nothing as delicate and fluffy as those, though.”
“You guys get oleanders down in the Southland. I've seen those a number of times, they're quite lovely.”
“Oh, yeah. Only drawback with oleanders is they grow like weeds down there. Which is absolutely amazing to me because they're very poisonous.”
“At least it's not strychnine,” he told her. “Strychnine or—better yet deadly nightshade.” And Joey entered her mind right as that final word left his lips. “I don't even know if strychnine grows out here,” he continued.
“Yeah, I don't know, either...” Her voice trailed off at that. She thought about Joey and what he was doing right at that moment. They were still touring over in Europe and they were about to drop their brand new album in the meantime as well. If nothing else when she got back to Lake Elsinore, she had to pick up a copy of that.
She would have to search about for that familiar lettering: she knew it when she saw it.
“There should be a garden somewhere,” he continued, “one full of poison plants.”
“The most dangerous garden in the world,” she declared.
“We should literally call it that.”
“'We'?”
“'They', I should say,” he corrected himself; before them, the little road led to that wide part of the river. Big lush ponderosas as well as oak trees with large wide green leaves the size of dinner plates and tall narrow trees with high canopies surrounded them.
“I was just gonna say—do you really wanna go there, Louie?”
“Unless you wanna.” He tugged on the parking lever and switched off the car. “I ain't gonna do it unless you want to do it.”
“We gotta be careful, though,” she pointed out.
“Oh, absolutely. That's something that's just not for the faint of heart. The quintessential declaration of 'you can look but don't touch'. Might wanna throw in a 'for the love of god' in there, too. 'You can look but for the love of god, do not touch.'”
“'Welcome to Shelley and Clemente's poison garden,'” she declared with a gesture of her hand, “the most dangerous garden on Earth. We've got everything from strychnine to belladonna to oleanders to—whatever else we can find. Have it all together under one umbrella. You and me—we could retire off the profits.”
“You think people would actually pay money to see that?” he asked her, stunned.
“Yeah. People pay money to see the weirdest shit, Louie.”
“Case in point!” He gestured to himself.
“You guys aren't weird,” she assured him.
“Yes, we are. We're as weird as weird can possibly be.” He sipped on his coffee a bit more and then he unbuckled his seat belt. “Anyways, this is where I come to clear my head. I call this place 'the end of the world' 'cause it's far removed away from anything. It's only ten miles back to Castroville but—still.”
They both climbed out of there in unison; Sam peered up to the gray sky overhead and she took in the smell of the salt as it filtered in through the trees before them. The Salinas River flowed right next to the small stretch of gravel and partially collapsed pavement.
“This is like the perfect place for a poison garden,” she told him as he led her to the soft dark river bank.
“Oh, yeah, this lush soil here. Look up the plants and see what kind of environment they thrive in.”
“I do know oleanders like heat,” she told him, “it's why they're everywhere in the L.A. area and in the south, too.”
“Have a special greenhouse for those guys,” he continued as he held his cup of coffee close to his chest. “Kinda clean up the pavement behind us a bit so—Skolnick can drive around on it on his—golf—cart.”
“Shelley and Clemente's poison garden—featuring Alex Skolnick's golf cart.” She laughed at that and he laughed with her.
“Can you imagine Alex on a golf cart?” he asked her, and then he held out his arms, “'oh! Oh god! Oh god here we go!'” And he lowered his voice to where he almost matched Alex's tone.
“Four wheelin' on a golf cart,” she laughed some more.
“Hey, Alex! Take it easy, little man!” Louie lowered his voice to a near whisper. “There's stuff in here that'll kill you faster than you can say your middle name!” He shook his head and chuckled some more, and then he took another sip of his coffee.
“So what's the quiet place like?” he asked her as they neared the river's edge.
“In upstate?”
“Yeah.”
“It's about like this, without the river, of course. There was another spot that Joey and I went to when Stormtroopers were in Ithaca a few summers ago—right by the water's edge at the one lake—one of the Finger Lakes that's there. It kind of reminds me of that, like I'm getting the same feeling as that.”
They stopped at the water's edge and Sam leaned out a little bit for a view beyond the trees. The stretch of rich black and gray that was the Pacific Ocean, a mere stone's throw up ahead of them. Even though Louie had a different opinion, Sam couldn't help but feel that there was something prehistoric about this part of the river; something precious and untouched.
“Sometimes, when it's a bit sunnier out,” he started again, “I'll kneel down to the waters here and search around for insects and rocks and stuff. There's a lot of bizarre life here that's endemic only to this part of the river and as far as I know, the whole state.”
“Kind of like a 'keep it forever' sort of thing,” she noted.
“Exactly, right. Keep this whole place hidden away from the world so as to protect it from everything and everyone. Eastern Sierra is the same way. Exact same way.” He sipped on his coffee once again.
“C'mon, I think it's gonna rain—I feel it.”
They returned to the car and sure enough, as Louie fired it up again and they made a turn back at the dead end and proceeded back up the pavement, the first large drops of rain pattered on the roof and the windshield. It would be some time before they reached the Highway 1 once again, but once they did, Sam wondered as to how far they could go without seeing another sliver of civilization between Monterey Bay and the next spot on the coast.
To the left of them stood the high sea cliffs in all their withered and eroded glory, strong and high over their heads, much stronger and higher than the buildings back in New York City or Los Angeles or even San Francisco itself. To the right stood the ocean: the gray and black waters that went on forever into the horizon. Empty and cold, and cradled by the clouds over them. Everything gray and black.
Every so often, Sam peered down to the waves down below as they crashed on the rocks. She looked to the left once again: every so often in the cliffs, a minute ponderosa jutted out from the cracks as if it gasped for the fresh oceanic air. The coast line seemed to stretch on for infinity before them. She glanced over at Louie and the serene expression on his face.
He was her drummer in that moment.
She turned her attention back out to the ocean beyond them as they went around a corner. Maybe it was the lack of anything discernible on the cliffs or the fact that the ocean appearead so endless beyond them, but something about all of this made her squirm in her seat.
Louie's occasional peers down to the gages behind the steering wheel didn't help, either.
An eternity in such a small pocket of the coastline. They really were at the end of the world.
A sign emerged on the side of the road but she had no idea what it read.
“We probably should've stopped for gas in Castroville,” he told her at one point.
“Why, are we low?” she asked him as her heart skipped a beat.
“Sorta. I hope. I don't really know the economy on this thing—I don't really pay attention to that sort of thing.”
They rounded another corner and Louie drummed his fingers on the steering wheel: that time they had a full view of the ocean. The grand view of the waves as they welcomed her to the end of the world, and they were about to run out of gas as far as she knew right then.
Another sign emerged from behind the guard rail and that time she saw that they were ten miles from the central part of the coast.
“Mother fucker!” he spat under his breath.
“It's okay—we're almost to San Simeon,” she told him.
“Yeah, I know—I'm still kicking myself, though. We'll probably gonna coast there the rate we're going at right at the moment.”
“Seriously?” she demanded, shocked.
“Yeah!”
She closed her eyes and she thought of Joey over in Europe. The only thing that seemed worse than losing Cliff to a bus accident that was far beyond her control was her being stranded on the Central California coast and not being able to tell anyone. But then again, they were close to the next piece of civilization.
“As long as we don't drive into the ocean, I think we'll be fine,” she told him.
“We don't drive into a—poison garden,” he muttered as they went around yet another bend in the road: the cliffs soon began to lower away to the sight of more ponderosas and scraggly shrubs.
“There's no poison gardens here,” she assured him.
“You sure? 'Cause like—there's a bend here—and another here—it's like this.”
They rounded a corner as it wound around the coastline: the road dipped inward into a gentle curve and they doubled back to the next crevice in the landscape.
“Sit—” He pointed to the left. “—down—” He pointed to the right. “—sit—down—sit—down—poison garden.” He pointed straight ahead at that last part and she chuckled at that.
Sure enough, the car sputtered a bit right outside of San Simeon: Hearst Castle rose up off in the distance but they had no time to visit right at that moment.
“Told ya we'd have to coast,” he told her as he guided the car to the gas station right there at the edge of town. The engine sputtered again and died right as they coasted into the first spot near the driveway. He let out a low whistle and leaned back in his seat.
“That was close,” she remarked.
“Yeah, I'll say,” he breathed, and then he turned his attention to her. “A twenty'll get us to the heart of Lost Angles and it'll get me up the Grapevine and into the Central Valley.”
“You're not gonna hang out there with me?”
“I can't,” he told her. “We're supposed to make a new album ourselves.”
“Oh, yeah, that's right!” She handed him a twenty dollar bill, followed by another which would ensure him a ride back home to the Bay Area.
Once they were filled up, they returned to the road.
“I don't know if Hearst Castle is even open,” Louie confessed.
“I don't, either. It's getting kind of late in the day, too.”
“Yeah, exactly!”
Some more coastline and they found their way down into Solvang and then San Luis Obispo where they were met with the Pacific Coast Highway yet again, and they moved away from the end of the world. So much that she wanted to show to Joey. And so much that she wished Cliff could see again, especially that one stretch of the highway where everything felt so finite and endless at the same time.
They wound their way through the low foothills and yet another unknown pocket of California, until they skirted the outside of Santa Barbara followed by Carpinteria.
The waves down below thrashed even more as they wound along the cliffs towards Ventura. At that point, the sky began to darken with the setting sun on the other side of the blanket of clouds overhead.
“Part of me wants to go down to the beaches here,” Louie confessed to her. “Like—take a walk on one of the beaches here. Yet another thing I wanted to do with Zelda when we were together.”
“We don't have towels, though,” she pointed out.
“And it's cold, too!”
“Right!”
The highway led them into Camarillo and then the heart of Los Angeles, where it ended and became the 210. At that point, night was about to fall over them, and the feeling of dread washed over Sam herself. She knew that Bill would be furious by the mere sight of her walking through that front door without any sort of explanation.
Louie drove them down to Corona and then the hills which cradled Lake Elsinore away from the rest of the region. The clouds had finally dissipated and gave way to a violet and orange sky overhead. Such a great length of time to be in that car with him and a part of her wished they had more time.
More time together. More time to relish over the idea of the poison garden.
But that time was all they had right then and there, much like that stretch of highway that overlooked the ocean.
She guided him to the house by the lake and within time, she recognized the neighborhood in question.
He pulled up to the curb and she sighed through her nose at the realization. Her head spun a bit from having driven such a great distance but at least they could come to a stop on a steady piece of ground. She looked on at the house, with its windows dark and the shades pulled despite the fact that it wasn't that late in the evening.
“Do you need any help?” he offered her, to which she shook her head. Instead, she sighed through her nose again and she climbed out to fetch her things out of the back seat. She decided to give her mother a ring later that night when Bill and the girls had gone to bed, that is if they already did. She hoisted her overnight bag over her shoulder and she held her purse close to her body as she reached the driver's side window. He rolled it down so she could speak to him one last time.
“Louie?”
He leaned closer to the window with his eyebrows raised.
“Thank you,” she said to him in a soft voice, and he showed her a sweet smile.
“It's my pleasure,” he told her with a wink. “Poison garden.”
“Poison garden,” she echoed him with a smile on her face.
“Also—”
She stopped and he gestured for her to come on closer to him.
“Don't worry, I'll—I'll talk to him,” he vowed to her.
“Who?”
“You know. The little man.”
“Oh, him!” She stopped right in her tracks. “What for?”
“Just to see if he's alright. One thing I've noticed about him when he fucks up something—he's real hard on himself. So if it's kinda messed between the two of you, I'll check in on him. I'll check in on him anyways.”
“Good plan,” she told him. “You be safe going back up, alright?”
“You be safe, too. Poison garden!”
Sam stepped away from the car and she turned back to the house, still in one place. Louie drove away right then and he disappeared around the corner. Another seven hours and he'd be back up there. She returned to the front door of the house and she opened it with ease. Silence.
She knew that he wouldn't do it. Sam shook her head and she bowed upstairs to her room.

all this before coffee
Dedicated to my black sheep family, who will always be golden.
Barbed wire, blank walls and an empty sky. Cocoa Beach.  Brevard County, FL. Jail.  Also known as SHARPS.  Tammy walked into the classroom with an air of bravado coupled with the eyes of a child. I never met a teacher before she said shyly, glancing at her handcuffs on the uncomfortable chair.  Even … I hesitated, even in school, I asked gently. I adjusted my own hips to adjust for the cold hard beneath me.  I mean, a teacher for real.  Her eyes looked down, and I implored with my eyes this time to the corrections officer to remove the handcuffs.  Her shoulder length hair was marred by black roots and mustard colored ends.  There were scars on her arm from cutting.  Her teeth were perfect when she decided to smile. Opening the GRE materials, I joked that I am useless at math but fairly good at grammar.  Tammy looked beautiful.
Some of us take many things too far.  That has seemed to be my pattern.  Even healthy habits turned into obsessions.  Jogging turned into running which became marathons and a cruel treatment of my body.  Some can run into their seventies without injury as some people live to a hundred while smoking and drinking whiskey to the end.  Mindful eating became anorexia and bulimia.  Going organic made me broke with the kombucha and hemp that flowed through my veins.  Being tidy led me to compulsive house cleaning, often with bleach scouring my hands and my eyes colored in pink tears.  Personal grooming turned to hours and dollars of hair coloring, clothes I could not afford, Botox, and breast augmentation. Wanting affirmation led to dangerous and toxic sexual situations.
Jaylen, I was warned, was “special.”  I would normally groan inward, used to so many parents highlighting their children as such, usually to explain poor grades.   The volunteer walked all twelve years of Jaylen, his mannerisms large and chaotic, into the room in which all toys and colors were removed.  I hate reading, he said, standing with his arms crossed in front of him like a knight.  Why? It’s stupid.  Can you read, I asked, opening the second-grade reader I was given. I don’t need to read, I can dance.
I met The Peruvian on a last minute, pathetic online date.  I was at a job expo to acquire my first teaching job after finishing my master’s degree at a world-famous university.  I almost flunked out.  I could not focus.  I cried over social histories in German, a language I lacked grammatical skill in, dreading the meetings with just my professor and another grad student. Black tea, discussions of Marx I got lost in, his approval nodding at the stout Russian girl I already had difficulty understanding in English, never mind in German.  In college, I was stellar.  On time to each class, writing papers late into the night with a gusto of my fingers and a smile on my face.  The world looked bright. On a sweltering day with an incompressible and unimportant commencement speaker, we burnt in the sun and passed around a flask of vodka under our graduation gowns.  Life is beginning.  I held the parchment color graduation schedule. My name had a star next to it.
I saw that Tammy was no longer shackled when she entered the gray room.  Since the week I met with her, she had elevated herself to the trusted inmates who could clean, deliver meals, and hand out the dog-eared pages of books on a squeaky cart.  So, you scored extremely high on many levels, Tammy.  Let’s take a look at the reading comprehension packet I assigned on The Scarlet Letter.  She smiled more brightly.  I pressed her for intrigue. Ma’am, she said glowing, my commissary is so lit now I don’t have to eat the garbage they give us.  They try to pass off expired food when I deliver it.  I wanted to call them out on those pistachios.  I don’t have time to answer these packets you give me. But I read the book.  What did you read, according to you?  We clasped hands.  Of course, the minster got off and Hester had to wear the giant A over her pilgrim costume.  I dipped my head. Of course.  She could read Hawthorne.
I will be the gladdest thing
           Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
           And not pick one.
I will look at cliffs and clouds
           With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
           And the grass rise.
And when the lights begin to show
           Up from the town,
I will mark which much be mine,
           And then start down.
-          Edna St. Vincent Millay
Jaylen came running into the room from the play center and basketball court which I assumed was a courtesy to me.  He needed to get the wiggles out.
Nassau Point in the summer at Aunt Tillie’s, driving the Long Island Expressway until it ended to countless grey and white mottled roads.  Passing vineyards that used to be potato fields, cramming my mouth with the last bit of contraband Doritos which were called a Special Treat to nullify us on the vast expanse from New Jersey to the tiny white house.  Decorated in “Early American” with a front glass porch smelling oddly pleasant of moth balls and sunlight.  The huge lawn rolling into the bay with a dock that appeared and disappeared with the tide.  Kids took showers in the dank basement, carved out of a space teeming of a hoarder. A crusted bottle of prell shampoo and a withered sliver of ivory soap.  I met Man-Boy With Very Hairy Legs for the first and last time.  Stroking my legs up and down, he asked if I had a boyfriend.  I was ten, and smug that I could run through poison ivy and never get a rash.  Do you want to fool around, like do stuff?  He whispered into my ear everything I did not know yet.  That’s what married people do!  With his laughter, I leapt my long legs and ran, up the hill, to the driveway where my father was shucking corn.  I got away. This time.
I was so excited to see Tammy.  But she was not in attendance.  I left the CO the beat-up copy of Antigone for her. I never saw Tammy again.  “All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when his course is wrong and repairs the evil.  The only evil is pride.” This quote was for my betterment, not for Tammy’s.
A time of reckoning, and a time of complete growth.  A time of a schedule not placed by us.  A journey into us through the connection of others, who became best friends.  Vitamin fusions, lining up for medication in ribbed short paper cups, and Group.  Totally released from responsibility, my linens and clothes were washed, returned the same afternoon in compact squares surrounded by plastic wrap.  Jokes of communal constipation. So, this is my brain mapped.  Here is what displays depression, here anxiety, this is insomnia, that part shows a lack of memory and concentration.  What is that big blue of the Pacific Ocean?  She looked at me, clicked her keyboard.  PTSD.
I want to draw a Parrot! P-A-R-R-O-T and speak like one! Wordless, I handed him the blue and black expo markers for the old white board.  With precision, he drew the bird.  I need more colors, he explained in one breath can I talk like a parrot.  I smiled at him at led him to his desk. Let’s try to pay attention today, and I will get you more colors and you can show me how a parrot talks. I began my lesson, and his eyes drifted into imagination.  I needed to get him more colors.
I told The Peruvian I was pregnant.  Now I can never afford to divorce you he muttered, enraged.  Married two months earlier, I realized our honeymoon baby was not welcome.   The protesters were angry, and I felt sick. Him on his laptop, me crying to a social worker.  Do not sedate me, I plead, I need to feel this sin.  Sliding my shoes off in the car, my trunk grinding with mountain rolls of cramps and uncontrollable sobbing coming from a divine place, I declined lunch in West Palm.  I never want to do anything fun.  Changing my pad alone in a car beneath the ceiling of the parking garage in City Place, I then tilted my head and fell asleep again.  My birthday came and went.  You didn’t remember my birthday.  With that evil glint in his eyes, he turned his head and told me that was because he did not love me.
I purchased a ream of paper and a new box of 42 colors Crayola, legit, sharpener in the box, for Jaylen.  He immediately sat down and drew and drew.  Can we put some words to these if we use the colors you want?  He looked up at me shyly and wrote down five words from the fifth-grade reader.  How did you know that?  Easy, my Grammy teaches me.
I did not smoke to fit in. I smoked because it felt good out in the parking lot, vying for shade, with the Tech supplying communal cigarettes and a light.  The wave went through me and my lips burned with the dirt and smoky taste.  You look like Strawberry Shortcake trying to smoke a cigarette!  My mother was a sophisticated Virginia Slims smoker, sitting on the brick steps in her tennis skirt, so beautiful, watching my brother play in the backyard waiting for my father to return from work.  I sat next to her in awe, breathing in the sprinkler water and counting its pattern, hum hum-hum-hum, hum hum-hum-hum.
I took a cigarette break on my Uber ride home.  I knew I would not smoke much when I got home.   However, I did not consume much except cigarettes and black coffee.  I felt Parisian.  The house got messy, and my thighs grew softer. Investing only in ponds cold cream and drugstore mascara, I laughed deeper and threw myself into work more than ever, with determined concentration, forgetting my posture, hunched over in zeal working sixty hours a week.   Anxiety attacks did not make my head and hands shake while driving. I binged watched Law and Order.  Being unhealthy never felt so healthy.
I called the jail to let them know I am available for other inmates if they needed me.  I went the next day to help a young man learn English as a second language. All went well until he stood up screaming asking for a guard then switching to Spanish.
Here is your key, you can find your mailbox in the teacher lounge.  Here is the form to join the union, Mr. Pescatelli will most certainly find you about that.  Do you know what a block schedule is?  In the morning you will be teaching Advanced Placement European History to our magnet students.  After lunch, you have sophomore World History in the fourth wing. The afternoon will have different challenges.  If you ever need assistance, security is just down the hall.  Welcome to Ft. Lauderdale High School.  Welcome to my first year of teaching.
 …
I met the Sophisticated Scandinavian Man in Boston in the Spring.  A PhD candidate from a social democracy intrigued me.  I was twenty-two and he was twenty-eight.  I felt like a puppy taken in from the cold.  There is a long story for this, maybe later.  The times in which he devoured me, lavished upon me, he loved a short story I wrote, “All this before coffee.”
Sonya met me in the prison classroom.  In anticipation of a new student, I posted Jaylen’s parrots, travel posters, pictures of presidents listing their failures before they took office.  Hello, she said, reaching her cuffed wrists out to me.  I am Jaylen’s mother.
All this before coffee.  All this after a DUI.

The Mommy Myth: Threats from Without (Part One)
*TRIGGER WARNING FOR ABUSE*
Tumblr media
This will be a doozy folks...
Razor blades in apples and cookies during Halloween. Day cares run by child molesters and Satanists! Flammable pajamas! Car seats not installed properly! Cavities from bottles! Child Porn! Kidnappers! Toys choking kids! Alar in apple juice! Peanuts stuck in windpipes! Stalkers! Rapists! Radiation from household appliances! Murderers! Gangs! Fetal Alcohol Syndrome! Car jacking! Tylenol causes liver damage! Milk Cartons with missing kids! If you fuck up just a little, your kid is screwed!
Welcome to the 1980s where childhood danger became the new obsession along with designer goods, buns of steel, big hair, cell phones, and greed being good. In many decades that traced the growth of mothers in the workplace (check the 1940s), there was moral panic about juvenile delinquents and latchkey kids going bad, there were 19.5 million working mothers by 1984, also 6/10 women with children under eighteen. Mothers of preschool children working had doubled since 1970 and it was 15% higher for African-American women because unemployment for black fathers was 10.2% compared with 5% for white fathers. And these women were not making the big bucks to afford clothes and lifestyles seen on Dynasty and Falcon Crest, where they’d mostly work in retail, clerical, service, or factory positions and daycare workers earned less than most clerks of liquor stores.
In 1984, aside from the fictitious case of the disappearance of Barbara Holland and the re-appearance of the thought to be dead Will Byers the previous year, there were two media events that captured the public fascination with child endangerment: the McMartin daycare scandal and the premiere of The Cosby Show (it was a more naive time) which was a typical sitcom except it featured two parents who worked outside the home in white-collar professions and focused on an African-American family. It showed the contradictions of what 1980s moms lived with: you can’t trust your kids with just anyone or leave them alone, you can have a demanding job and the loving family made for tv, act as paranoid as an FBI agent, be the spontaneous mom, and be constantly aware.
Tumblr media
These media panics also happened around the same time the Reagan Administration was a big thing; he was aided by the regressive STOP ERA and Religious Right which led to a huge anti-feminist backlash in policies and the media. Women’s magazines scared moms about what could go wrong with their kids and exploited the fears of the public. Around the same time the McMartin daycare scandal was a thing, the government refused to fund daycare centers for millions of kids and was a result of such coverage. The War Against Women had started and programs benefiting women and children were in it’s crosshairs as being “too expensive” and “trickle down economics” will help anyways. So while the Chrysler Corporation and the Savings and Loans industry were given financial life rafts, programs like WIC (Womens, Infants, and Children) were cut mortality rates for infants of color (which declined in the 1970s) started climbing again and family leave was virtually non-existent. Parents magazine published a later-debunked warning in 1982, that children in daycare will become hoodlums. Moms were also warned kids will pick up lice (also in Little League or in the classroom) from daycares.
The roots of this sensationalization of childhood perils stared in the mid 1970s with it’s peak a decade later, where Ladies Home Journal dumped Bruno Bettelheim for Geraldine Carro’s “Mothering” column where she was a mom giving guidance to other moms where she acknowledged that “motherhood rates mixed reviews” and she promised to offer opinions rather than impose them as “For too long, we’ve been living by other people’s books” and featured short pieces with titles on how to pick a pediatrician or teach the kids to cook safely. What was meant to soothe and offer empowerment ended up striking terror with warnings about all the things that could kill kids and that summer camps were the sources of “close to 100 deaths and 250,000 accidents” in 1974 and moms were urged to investigate the camp’s accreditation, the camper-counselor ratio, the number of life preservers in boats, all the codes were met by state standards, the lifeguards had Red Cross training, and all the counselors were experienced. Imagine what happened when Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp came out...
Tumblr media
If you tossed your baby in the air, you could risk whiplash and hemorrhage of blood vessels feeding into the brain. But kids can’t get new babysitter and crib on the same day or kid will freak and kids got poisoned a lot from eating plants and flowers. Also kid’s sleepwear had to be flame retardant but washed with warm water, high-phosphate laundry detergent, no soap or bleach, no fabric softener or they will be rendered non-retardant. Ages where kids need to learn swimming was disputed, even Santa was scary or teaches them to lie, buy simple toys, costumes needed to be flame retardant and have reflective tape strips on the costumes and bags, kids needed flashlights or can only trick or treat in the daylight hours, kids can’t wear masks anymore, and all treats need to be examined.  Then in 1977, Carro asked how parents can protect kids without making them fearful. Hrrrrmmmmmm......
There have been missing children before in the past, even in that sweet long ago when people hardly bothered to lock their front doors at night, one of the most notorious early cases that have been exploited by the media was the Etan Patz case where 6 year old Etan was kidnapped in downtown New York City on May 1979, before getting on his school bus, there was a huge effort to find him locally and in the media but the case has remained unsolved until 2010 when his killer was found and it was 9 years since he was declared dead. Perhaps the most influential case was that of Adam Walsh, son of John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted, who was kidnapped from the toy department at a Florida store and was made into a TV movie. In March 1984, the missing for a month ten year old Kevin Collins made the cover of Newsweek magazine. The media had exploited these tragic cases with wildly exaggerated figures soon circulated in the media, what was a small number of cases became sensationalized to make people think kids were being snatched every time they took a breath.
On March 28 1984 NBC’s Tom Brokaw reported “The fear is thick around Denver these days. A number of kidnappings have made everyone nervous--parents, children, and police.” Parents were driving their kids to school rather than let them wait on the bus stop and left the school after seeing their kid enter the building, such stories hardly explored what could be done as a society and community to protect children. No you were on your own.
Tumblr media
Late March 1984, headlines talked about a daycare on Manhattan Beach, California, this daycare being McMartin Preschool where seven nursery teachers were arraigned on over 100 counts of child molestation. Virginia McMartin, age 76 and on a wheelchair, presided over the day care center where she and her family members allegedly drugged, fondled, and molested at least 125 children and killed cuddly animals in front of them. 90% of Los Angeles residents surveyed believed that Ray Buckey and his grandmother Virginia to be guilty. Children were interviewed by therapists where they were videotaped and used puppets. As it turned out, the children were badgered by therapists who used leading questions and threats to get the kids talking. From 1989 to 1990, California received at least 440, 000 reports of child abuse, 84% deemed to be unfounded, and 8,448 of the cases were defined as sexual abuse. Suddenly, as the media warned, you couldn’t trust very many people with your children. In other news, the founder of Children’s Theater Company in Minneapolis, John Clark Donahue was forced to resign after allegations of molesting three boys and Little Rascals Day Care in North Carolina became notorious when it was the owner and cook (owner’s conviction was overturned). There was news of fathers molesting their daughters. On May 21st, there was a Los Angeles teacher brought to court on charges of molestation at the elementary school and both ABC and CBS reported that a religious boarding school for boys in Walterboro, South Carolina had beaten and abused boys. Then in June, CBS and ABC reported on a fundamentalist commune in Island Pond, Vermont that was raided with 100 children taken from their homes because it was alleged their elders and parents abused them. The FBI got involved, saying groups of people abuse kids and circulate a book titled “How to Have Sex with Kids”. Obviously these stories had the subtext that no place was safe. In 1985, CBS announced that a church run day care had children suffering broken bones linked to violence (a total of eleven broken arms and legs) and Missouri exempted church run centers from licensing.
Even “Rockwellian”, small-town, Christian (and White) American places were dens of abuse. Jordan, Minnesota featured 24 defendants (factory workers, housewives, and a grandma) who were part of a “sex ring” and charged with more than 400 counts of sexually abusing dozens of children including their own kids. As Michaels and Douglas noted, a central theme was the failure of government agencies to oversee day care centers and catch molestation in time but Reagan’s administration kept their fingers in their ears singing “La la la can’t hear you la la la”. Geraldo Rivera did a sensationalist show on Satanism that played on adult fears of their teens. And Priests were being outed as having molested altar boys and other young men, like a priest in Henry, Louisiana where he admitted sexually abusing at least 35 boys and was sentenced to 20 years hard labor. The media was talking childhood abuse more seriously with 22% of adults saying they were victims of sexual abuse as children who never told anyone or when they did, nothing was done to the abuser.
Tumblr media
Back to old Virginia McMartin, follow-up stories assuring people that child care centers weren’t dens of rampant abuse weren’t publicized for example. Raymond Buckey’s defense attorney found two doctors who said that one of the children told them that it was his own father who “poked” him in the anus and the boy’s mother Judy Johnson who circulated the charges against them was known to be mentally ill and had trouble distinguishing between what’s real and what’s not. She also accused a Los Angeles school board member of molesting her son and claimed kid was injured by an elephant and forced to drink baby’s blood. The children initially denied abuse, Kee MacFarlane the therapist had the kids name gas station attendants, community leaders, and store clerks as molesters and she came up with the name “naked movie star” for a game the teachers supposedly made the kids play. Jurors viewing the tapes of the interviews were appalled and it turned out Kee had an affair with Wayne Satz, television reporter for KABC who broke the McMartin story. After nearly 6 years and $15 million, Ray Buckey and his mother were found not guilty and there was a hung jury and still not found guilty. Sadly he was viewed as a loner who liked to go commando in shorts and a mama’s boy with more shorts than brains. Virginia died in 1995, Peggy McMartin Buckey died in 2000, and Ray Buckey who was incarcerated for five years during the trials later went to law school and changed his name and moved elsewhere to have a family. Meanwhile in Jordan, cases were falling apart with one couple getting aquitted and vowed to regain custody of their three sons. Only one person plead guilty: James Rud, who lied and implicated others.
“It was all Momma’s fault!” I’m exaggerating but the public imagination linked day care centers with child sexual abuse, molesters targeted kids from “broken homes” (read single moms not like dysfunctional families with distant parents) and you couldn’t trust Mr. Wilson next door. The subtext clearly targeting working mothers or moms considering going into the workplace and leaving their kids in programs after school before picking them up. Of course Susan Faludi in her book Backlash, revealed that kids were twice as likely to be abused at home than in day care but media panics tend to focus on what’s juicy rather than facts. In her study of working moms in magazines, Kathryn Keller stated:
Each negative image of day care and the implication behind it that women should not be working but should be at home with their children was countered by a positive image.
Moms were surrounded by mixed messages that served them guilt and paranoia, it was nice that issues that were swept under the rug were given the attention they deserved, but it was used as an indictment of non-traditional family structures and women not feeling they have to sacrifice their autonomy at the service of their families or stay in terrible marriages for “the good of the children”. It’s best I leave this dreary part (before heading to sitcoms and humor and magazines) with Tamme Dawson from GLOW to empower all women and snap back at the powers that be.

road trip
we’ll start in delaware, and I will love you more and more with each mile.
you’ll drive first, because I know you’ll insist on starting the trek behind the wheel. you’ll drive, and your hand will be on my thigh or holding my hand, and I’ll watch you and admire your focus.
our first stop will be in maryland, we’ll pass your hometown and you’ll take me through the back roads like you always do, and then we’ll get to destination number one. we’ll have some good crabs and share the sunset before trekking again, and this time I’ll drive.
we’ll keep working our way through maryland until we get down to virginia. there, we’ll visit several landmarks and spots, big and little cities, and we’ll pass my college.
but of course, in between all of these stops and the future stops, we’ll switch drivers, we’ll cook and buy meals, and I’ll get to fall asleep in your arms under the stars when we sleep.
and we’ll keep trekking. after virginia, we’ll head down to north carolina. we’ll have some delicious southern food and talk to the locals in each town we go through. we’ll buy some postcards and send them to our family, letting them know that we’re having a great time on the trail.
after north carolina, we’ll head down further to south carolina and check out some historical spots. we’ll stop in fort sumter and laugh remembering our high school american history teacher and all of her stories and antics.
when it gets dark and you’re driving, you’ll look over at me and I’ll be fighting sleep in the passenger seat, and you’ll know by my drooping eyes that I only fall asleep while you drive because I trust you and I know you’ll never let me get hurt.
but when we switch drivers and I continue, we’ll be on our way to georgia. there we’ll eat some delicious peaches and we’ll do some paddling. but we’ll be so excited to get down to florida, that we’ll leave shortly after.
we’ll leave for florida in the morning. you’ll cook us breakfast in the back of the rv, and we’ll stop just past the florida line to enjoy it. we’ll spend several days in several parts of florida, because we have family there who needs to be updated about our trip so far. we’ll see your family and then my family, and we’ll spend a day at the beach and a day at disney and maybe even more. when we’re there, it will remind us of the trip we took to florida when we were teenagers.
when we eventually leave florida, we’ll head to the southern part of alabama. we’ll get into even more of the southern life, and visit the uss there. we’ll pass through and work our way to louisiana. we’ll spend some time there, partying whether it’s mardi gras time or not. with any luck, we’ll have forgotten what we even did there by the end of all our celebrations.
but we’ll sober up and get to mississippi after. there, we’ll see some national parks and enjoy the clear southern sky. from there, we’ll go to the music part of tennessee, and we’ll see the museums and stores dedicated to recording and producing music.
after stops for gas and checking on the rv, which we’ll obviously be doing throughout our entire journey, we’ll venture on to arkansas, pronounce it like “ar-kansas” the entire time because that’s the kind of humor we thrive on, and we’ll see the toltec mounds at a state park (they’re cool!). after that, we’ll drive west to oklahoma, and we’ll see some historical towns.
we’ll get down to texas, and we’ll pass through dallas and san antonio, getting to know some of the people down there while we drive through. we’ll hold hands every time we get out to explore a city or town, and I’ll be shocked that we made it all the way to texas without running into any major problems on the drive!
I will admire you while you admire the landmarks and towns. I will look at your face, curious and smiling, and know that there is no one I would rather spend those weeks/months with, no one else I would rather explore it all with.
after we finish up in texas, we’ll work our way back up to new mexico. there, we’ll see some national parks and enjoy some delicious food. we’ll go through that state and drive up to colorado, where we’ll stop in colorado springs to see the incredible vastness of the land in pikes peak. it will be just a glimpse of the wonderful hills and mountains we’ll be seeing on the west coast, which will be a lot different from the flat land in our own state.
we’ll then hike up to wyoming. we’ll see yellowstone, and check out how cool the land is and how different it is from what we’re used to. we’ll go west to idaho, and eat potatoes the entire time.
I haven’t even mentioned one of the most important parts of all this. the rv will have an aux cord, and we will alternate being DJs through the entire trip. we’ll listen to new music, albums that we’ve loved since we were teenagers, and we’ll introduce each other to new music. singing in the car with you is one of my favorite things to do, and I can’t wait for us to sing in the car across the country.
we’ll bop our way down to utah. we’ll see some national parks there too, and we’ll drive past the place I took my first very far ski trip. before entering arizona, we could maybe even stand in the four corners. even better, we can kiss, and say we kissed in four states at once.
we’ll see the grand canyon in arizona. we’ll reminisce on the trips we took with our own families when we were young, and remember the feelings of seeing those breathtaking views for the first time.
then, we’ll hit the bright lights and excitement of las vegas, nevada. we’ll go zip lining over fremont street and check out all of the clubs and parties we can get into. when we’ve had our fill of the busy city, we’ll head to california.
there, like florida, we’ll spend several days. we’ll see san francisco, sacramento, and los angeles. we’ll walk the streets they put in all the hollywood movies and we’ll hold hands and we’ll show everyone just how much we really love each other. we’ll have mini existential crises that we’ve already made it all the way across the country! we’ll walk on the california beaches and swim in the clear pacific waters and reminisce on all the beach trips we took in high school and college. we’ll walk the streets looking for famous people, and we’ll go into the most expensive stores and pretend like we can afford all of the things they sell. we’ll hit some high-end clubs if we can get in, and we’ll explore the wilderness during the days.
but of course, we’ll eventually have to get back on the road to the next state. we’ll ride up to oregon, and admire the beautiful land and how different it is from what we’re used to. we’ll explore, and spend some time in small towns there. we’ll soon work our way up to washington.
in washington, we’ll go up to seattle, visit the downtown area, the fish market, and get a good meal in town. we’ll check out some ski slopes and see the mountains (mount rainier!) and we’ll visit my family while we’re there. when we have had our fill of the northwest corner, we’ll head back east towards montana.
there, we’ll there, we’ll see some more national parks and admire the night sky from all the way over there. we’ll eat some different foods and explore all of the land, maybe go on a few hikes. as we’re seeing all of the various landmarks and differences between where we live and where we have gotten to, I will love and admire you for making it this long with me, and for being a much more precious work of art in this world than any of the sights we’ll have seen by now.
next we’ll head to north dakota. I’ll tell you all about how I once did a middle school project on north dakota, and how I’m the “expert” of the state, even though I secretly don’t remember anything I wrote down. we’ll see fort union trading post and drive the roads with the rv, listening to some good travel music and podcasts.
we’ll shoot south towards south dakota, and make our first stop at mount rushmore! we’ll send mount rushmore postcards to all our family and friends and take pictures imitating the faces of the carved men. we’ll sit and talk politics for a while, and we’ll see badlands national park in honor of the name of halsey’s first album.
after south dakota, we’ll go down to nebraska, and we’ll investigate some of the older land and great plains historical areas. we’ll see all of the rock formations and be truly living the southern lifestyle- as long as we’re both wearing our big floppy hats.
after that is minnesota. we will keep alternating drivers and having deep conversations about life. during these drives, we’ll have to keep each other busy, of course. we’ll try to guess the songs that come on shuffle in an album, listen to weird videos, try to alternate singing lyrics in songs and end up in complete laughter, and wave/make faces at the people who pass us on the road.
in minnesota, we’ll see fort snelling and how busy minneapolis could get. we’ll do some shopping and sightseeing there, and then continue. we’ll then drive to wisconsin. we’ll see some national parks there and check out all of the local shops, scenery, and general lifestyle.
iowa will be next. there, we will see some art in des moines and explore the capital city. we’ll go into some museums and see the wildlife of the mississippi river. we’ll try some of the food there, and cook some of it ourselves in the rv and have our own fancy dinners within the rv itself. because I don’t see us struggling with finding entertainment in the simplest things- that’s always been something we’re good at. we can have a good time doing anything, as long as we’re with each other.
then, before we know it, we’ll be in kansas. we’ll listen to songs by the band with the same name, and we’ll drive through while looking at the bigger cities along with the smaller towns, and enjoying some great food and drinks.
we’ll go to missouri next, where we will see the super cool gateway arch and take super basic pictures under it. exploring the towns will also be very fun, and we’ll pick up some souvenirs for those at home.
illinois is next. we will trek over to there, and see abraham lincoln’s house, along with downtown chicago. we’ll keep driving through, and every time you turn the wheel and sing along to the songs I’m playing, I will look at you and think about how much I absolutely adore and admire you.
we’ll see indiana and all of the art and gardens in the areas there. we’ll keep going, and reach kentucky, and drive north a bit more to ohio. we’ll drive through all of the little towns and try the food delicacies in each of the places. we’ll make a list of our favorites, and compare them when it’s all over.
we’ll go to michigan, and have some cool views of the great lakes. we’ll then drive up and see the amazing atmosphere of vermont, and admire the smaller, cuter towns. and yes, we will drive through pennsylvania and new york and on the way up, but we will reach them after.
we’ll check out some places in new hampshire, and then go all the way up to maine! it will all have gone by so fast, we’ll be shocked we’re back on the east coast already. because time always goes by so quickly with you.
we’ll go to massachusetts, and we’ll see the historical parts of boston, and see some museums in the area. we’ll walk around the city, and the parks within the city, and we’ll feel bittersweet that we’re already almost to where we began.
next will be rhode island, and we’ll talk and relate with the locals about what it’s like to live in such a small state.
we’ll visit connecticut after, and see the mark twain house, and compare life in the small eastern states with the large western states.
we’ll make our next stop in new york. if we aren’t completely out of money, we’ll see a broadway show, but if we are out of money, we’ll just walk the streets of times square and reminisce on our visit to new york as teenagers, and how we love each other just as much and even more now. we’ll take pictures and pop into some stores, and maybe walk all the way down to central park and take a stroll there, too.
we’ll go to pennsylvania and see the liberty bell, right in the middle of the city, and get some good cheesesteaks. we’ll be so close to being done by then, we’ll be antsy to shower and sleep in something that’s not an rv! but at the same time, we’ll be wishing it wasn’t over so soon. we’ll be so happy and grateful for the memories made across the country. and i know for me, at least, i’ll be wishing and hoping for the same kind of wonderful memories across the world.
and i will love you more and more with each mile we drive, each step we take, and each memory we make.

Why Are You Road Trippin'?
Tumblr media
I should be excitedly packing my suitcase and getting ready to hit the road because tomorrow night I leave for a quick extended weekend trip. I long for a vacation away from here because my summer has been non-stop work, and I'm tired. For months, I've dreamed of driving up the east coast, spending a week exploring places I've always wanted to see….and then life got in the way.       The first hiccup was that my oldest is a senior in high school and didn't want to miss the last two days of band camp. I decided that was fine and adjusted my dream. Then, I mistakenly planned a work gig for the third day so what started out as a six day trip is now a two day trip. I can write about it calmly because I pretty much have an "it is what it is" attitude, but the truth is that I couldn't have afforded my week long trip in the first place without making some precarious choices, such as not paying a bill.      Vacations always stress me out. I've been able to pull off a few throughout the years but not without robbing the piggy bank. The most lavish vacation was covered by the girls' grandma six years ago. I had to pay for the gasoline to get us to Georgia, which was doable. One other time we left for Philadelphia with $500 in my pocket. The tolls took about a third of my money so that was a "let's see how many free things we can do" trip. We also stayed at a friend's place, which was the only way we could swing it in the first place.  Using Benefits on Trips      Planning and budgeting for a vacation never works out for me. There's always some emergency that pops up that makes me laugh at the word "savings." Lodging is expensive and the cost of eating out, especially once you leave the valley, is impossible. Much to my kids' dismay, we always have a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread in the car when we travel. We've also used my food stamps on trips because you can use them anywhere in the U.S. We've had impromptu cookouts galore. In fact, I used to carry a portable charcoal grill in the trunk for that purpose. The entertainment part of trips has always been the one hardest to say no to, so we stopped at random city pools we spotted or lakes and made the most of it.       I was doing some research the other day and ran across an article about how state lawmakers at one time raised concern that West Virginia residents were using their SNAP benefits in other states. A part of that is a given when we are bordered by states that have no sales tax on food. The part they had a huge problem with was people going to the beach, for example, and using their SNAP benefits. I'm sure it seems like a valid complaint to some of you, but it's really just more judgment and bias toward the poor.       Vacations are a pretty normal thing for families to do. Almost everyone I know has traveled somewhere this summer, whether it was to a lake or an ocean. Summer is the time to get outdoors and travel for most of us, probably because work schedules are the only ones that have to be rearranged with the kids out of school. The costs associated with travel are ginormous, but why does one's financial situation have to dictate their experiences? Why shouldn't a family on SNAP be allowed to experience the ocean? And why shouldn't they be allowed to treat their kids to the peanut butter and bread feast to make the trip more doable? I'll never understand how allowing someone the dignity to feel as if they're worthy of normalized things is bad.       Vacation time almost feels as punitive for poor people as tax time. Instead of hearing how they should have paid off their bills and invested the money instead of buying a tv or gaming system, they are being told that their kids don't deserve a nice trip to experience something new, something different. Financial struggles control every decision, believe me. But sometimes, the view from your front porch grows stale. Sometimes, the stress of working low-wage jobs and barely getting by is a lot and an escape is nice. Because life is still going to be hard when they get back. The stressors don't take vacations. And imagine spending all of your days in the same place. You'd probably want to buy a new tv to watch the Travel Channel.  Here's to road trips, peanut butter, and bread.  Onward, Amy Jo Read more from Amy Jo Hutchinson Read the full article

A Vaccine Road Trip
Tumblr media
Want to get The Morning by email? Here’s the sign-up.
Good morning. The Biden administration has a huge amount of work to do to get the virus under control.
I took a 1,600-mile road trip this week that has left me even more amazed at how poorly the United States has handled the coronavirus — and more worried about how much work the Biden administration has to do to get it under control. I want to tell you that story this morning.
The U.S. now faces two main virus problems. First, our efforts to minimize the virus’s spread remain halfhearted, with many Americans refusing to wear masks or practice social distancing. Second, the early stages of the mass vaccination campaign have been a mess, far behind schedule and full of frustration for people trying to get shots.
The second of those problems was the reason for my road trip. I live in the Washington, D.C., area, where the vaccine rollout has been even slower than in most places.
I hear maddening anecdotes from neighbors and friends all the time, and I imagine you’ve heard similar anecdotes. Many Americans who qualify to receive the vaccine — like people over 65 — don’t know what they are supposed to do to sign up. When they try, they often find that all the slots are filled.
Millions of doses, unused
My mom, who’s 74 and has been living with my family for the last few months, was one of the people trying to figure out how to get her shot. And it felt impossible. Fortunately, she had an alternative. She normally lives in Colorado, a state with a somewhat better vaccine rollout. By checking repeatedly online, she got an appointment in Colorado.
So the two of us got in the car and spent a couple of days driving west (to spare her the risk of contracting the virus on a plane). My sister, who lives in Denver, drove east, and we met halfway, in St. Louis. I then drove back to Washington, and my sister and my mom drove to Denver. We are all grateful that she is about to receive her first shot.
But it’s worth pausing to reflect on what an indictment of our society this story is. The world’s richest, most powerful country has almost 20 million vaccine doses that are sitting unused. Meanwhile, people are desperately trying to sign up — and often failing. Many families don’t have the resources or flexibility to make it a full-time project.
For some, the consequences of the bungled rollout will be fatal. More than 3,000 Americans a day have been dying from Covid-19 recently. Some of them would not have contracted the virus if the Trump administration and state governments had kept the vaccination program anywhere close to on schedule.
President Biden announced his plans yesterday for a “full-scale wartime effort” to speed things up — including the construction of mass-vaccination centers, the involvement of drugstores and an accelerated manufacturing program. You can read the details here, as explained by The Times’s Sheryl Gay Stolberg. How well Biden succeeds will help determine how many Americans survive this pandemic.
‘Required’ and ignored
The other big factor will be how hard the country tries to reduce the virus’s spread while the vaccines are being rolled out. In the short term, masks and social distancing probably matter even more than vaccines. “The brutal truth is it’s going to take months before we can get the majority of Americans vaccinated,” Biden said yesterday.
But I came home from my trip shaken by what I had seen.
Almost everywhere I stopped — gas stations, rest stops and hotels, across Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois — there was a sign on the door saying that people had to wear masks to enter. And almost everywhere, most people ignored the sign.
At a Fairfield Inn in Ohio, a middle-aged couple sat unmasked on a lobby sofa for hours, drinking beers and scrolling through their phones. The hotel staff evidently did nothing about it. At a convenience store in Indiana, a hand-drawn sign on the door read: “Face masks are required. Please do not enter without one!!” Customers did anyway.
Nationwide, about half of Americans are not wearing masks when in close contact with people outside their households, according to a survey released yesterday by the University of Southern California.
Wearing a mask isn’t much fun. It’s hard to speak clearly, and if you wear glasses, the fogging is annoying. But the inconvenience sure seems worth the benefits.
Study after study has shown that masks reduce the virus’s spread. Yet millions of Americans have decided they would prefer more Covid — for their communities and potentially for their families and themselves — to more masks.
The persuasion problem
The Biden plan to accelerate vaccinations looks promising, many experts say. But the new president does not yet have a cohesive plan for changing Americans’ minds about safe behavior in the meantime. Repeating the same pleas, like Biden’s request that people wear masks for his first 100 days, seems no more likely to work than the signs I saw on my road trip.
What might work better? Perhaps a prime-time Oval Office address that’s light on policy and focused on a simple call to action. Or maybe the calls to action can come from a diverse array of celebrities, politicians and business executives. As behavioral psychologists often explain, the messenger can matter more than the message.
For now, I feel like I just drove across a country that is losing a winnable fight.
THE LATEST NEWS
The Virus
The drug maker Eli Lilly said that a treatment usually used to fight Covid-19 symptoms also prevented healthy people in nursing homes from contracting the virus.
A more contagious variant of the virus is forcing Britain’s hospitals to ration oxygen. “We’re practicing medicine in a way we never have,” one nurse said.
Dr. Anthony Fauci said that working with the Biden administration was “a liberating feeling.”
The Biden Administration
Congress overwhelmingly approved a waiver to let Lloyd Austin, a retired Army general, serve as Biden’s defense secretary. The Senate appears set to confirm him today, making Austin the first Black American to lead the Pentagon.
Biden is planning more executive actions today, including one that aims to send additional federal aid to families struggling to afford food.
Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, will ask Democrats to delay former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial until February.
Pete Buttigieg, Biden’s choice for transportation secretary, pledged to prioritize climate policy. Here’s how he could do so.
When the Bidens arrived at the White House, they briefly encountered a closed door — awkward. “The delay in opening the door did puzzle me a bit,” a former White House curator said.
Trump did what many older New Yorkers do: He retired to Florida. Not all of his Palm Beach neighbors are happy.

ARTS AND IDEAS
The rise and rise of “Drivers License”
Most songs that debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts come from stars, who often benefit from coordinated efforts by superfans. How, then, has “Drivers License,” a brooding debut single by the 17-year-old actress Olivia Rodrigo, rocketed to No. 1, broken Spotify streaming records and reached the top spot on Apple Music in 48 countries?
The answer is a mix of old and new techniques. Rodrigo, who stars on a “High School Musical” spinoff series on Disney+, is following a path similar to those of acts like Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus, who also had built-in fan bases from their Disney roles. The song’s lyrics, alluding to a love triangle involving a co-star, have helped too, fueling gossipy online chatter. And the song has received endorsements from Taylor Swift on Instagram and from TikTok tastemakers like Charli D’Amelio, helping it explode in popularity on the platform.
“TikTok videos led to blog posts, which led to streams, which led to news articles, and back around again,” Joe Coscarelli wrote in The Times. “The feedback loop made it unbeatable.”
