‘It's pointless to ask for anything in era of GOC single LI books, but I want more mean/villain female love interests. People say they're overdone and I'm like???where??? Xante (ACOR)? Olivia (TRR)? Sofia (TNA)? Danielle? (Class Act)? Aurora (OH)? None of them are LIs 😞’

pb could have given us Xanthe as a li, like we really could of had a baddie, or at least a fleshed out three dimensional character
but they gave us mark antony instead

Hey no seriously can we really please talk about the ‘jealous bitches’ archetype in Choices because hmmm I wonder what Xanthe from ACoR, Isobel from WB and Kala from Alpha have in common hmmmmm anything weird about that hmmmmm can’t put my finger on it.

Because PB sure loves giving MCs catty rivalries with female characters! 🙃
(I was gonna include more but I feel like the line between rival and full-on villain would get blurry, so I'm putting it in your hands)

Top 10 characters that should've been LIs
(I'm stealing this idea from @jerzwriter 😁😘)
Han (AME): I do like Mackenzie, but ugh... it's such a waste of time to make a character as handsome as he is and not give him at least a tiny story. And several flings with MC... Just saying... 😏
Horatio (LH): Before Ben showed up, every time I played LoveHacks I was annoyed Horatio wasn't romanceable. Why did PB make a character so adorable and never let the players romance him?
Renza Fiero (TRM): Yeah, she's evil and a backstabbing traitor who romanced one of the most stupid villains on Choicesverse. But I loved her 🤷
Harper Emery (OpH): Well, here's a power imbalanced romance I'd gladly play. She's beautiful, powerful, competent and more interesting than most characters in the entire series;
Teagan (AME): Again, why did PB make a character so sweet and never let the players romance her? I don't get it;
Ruby Webster (CoP): I like Trystan more than I ever expected to like a LI from a single LI book. But when I first started playing Crimes of Passion, I was upset I couldn't romance Luke. Then I changed my mind and wanted to romance Ruby lol. She is pretty, sweet, smart, doesn't date much. My MC would gladly date her;
Luke Watanabe (CoP): If Crimes of Passion was a multiple LIs book, I'd definetely choose his route. Even if I changed my mind later, I think he'd still be worth romancing;
Carter Jackson (QB): I swear I thought he would be a LI when I started playing Queen B. Such a disappointment...
Robin (TNA): I only played until chapter 6 (I think...), but I remember MC talking and having much more fun with them than with Sam. I know they hooked up with Sam's fiancée, but I liked them. And btw, they're prettier than Sam;
Xanthe (ACOR): I'm not an enemies to fuckbuddies lovers enthusiast, but once again I fail to understand why PB created a gorgeous and intriguing character like her if the players can't even have a fling with her.

Now, if y'all don't know my #1, you clearly don't know me! lol
TOBIAS. FREAKING. CARRICK. (OH) Dude- PB - WTF were you thinking? Or not thinking might be more appropriate here. Not only did this ho want to romance him, but the juicy story that would have delivered in Book 3... it was RIGHT THERE ... low hanging fruit... and PB blew it.
Olivia Nevrakis (TRR) - I mean, who doesn't love a sexy, hot redhead who dresses to the nines with at least six switchblades hiding in her couture? Liam, who? Drake, who? Maxwell, Who? And Hana is sweet and all, but I am not that into sweet. Liv, they did us dirty!
Robin Flores (TNA) - OK, I only liked TNA1 (2 caused me pain, so I stopped reading & never opened 3), but I enjoyed 1. It's fun, babes; you want a McDonald's burger every now and then, right? But I digress. The story would have been SO much more fun if Robin had been an LI, and not for nothing. I think he had much more in common with my MC than Sam ever did. I said what I said.
Aurora Emery (OH) - I really thought they were going there... then they didn't. She had the same curmudgeonly attitude that Ethan did at the start, and MC wore her down, the same way she did Ethan (at least in my playthrough). I think they could have worked well, and how could you say no to Aurora in that red dress?
Jackie Varma (OH) - Oh, wait? What? She was an LI you say? Wow, well, based on the four mediocre scenes per book we got... I almost forgot. Jackie should have been given equal billing... because it almost feels like she was not an LI.
Baz Mirani (OH) - I freaking love Baz. Like... love Baz. He is the perfect best friend, and buddy, a little frumpy with a tummy character that is so adorable, caring, and fun that one day he and MC could be playing video games together, look at each other, and just go - "Oh, fuck, yeah... we could do this!"
Harper Emery (OH) - Again. The storyline could have been great. MC falling for Ethan's ex... come on! And I'm sorry, but Harper is a gorgeous, sexy, brilliant, badass woman - what's not to fall for? (Let's not talk about Book 3, Harper, Book 3 is NOT canon.)
Cassidy (WTC) - OK she didn't last too long, but if she would have lasted longer, she would have been a fun LI. I loved her edge, and she would have been a 10 times better option than Sledge. (Look at me, I rhymed! lol)
Horatio Santos (LH) - We could use another quality Latine LI in the Choices galaxy, and I don't know. He reminds me of the guys from Brooklyn that I used to date back in the day. He would have been a good choice.
Xanthe (ACOR) - Because OMG, was she hot as hell.
This was fun! :)

Tagging @choicesfandomappreciation for Day 3 of Choices Spread Kindness Event!
(Again...REALLY sorry for the lateness of this post!!)
I'm a huge huge fan of fanart...often art was what used to draw me the quickest to a book or character and make me more eager to play it! It was also a great way - like fanfic but differently - to incorporate things you wouldn't find so easily in canon. Here are some of my favourite artists!!
@sazanes - She is not only an incredible artist - she is also a ball of enthusiasm and great talent!! We first met when she sent me Hayden-focused asks after finding out we were both Hayden stans 😄 Her art is absolutely gorgeous and packed with so much fine detail. I still remember being amazed by her while running my first Hayden Young Appreciation Week - not only did she make an art piece for every day...she also ensured that if the character was customisable, she did an art piece each for each face (she did this both for Hayden and Liam). And given that some of those faces have less representation even though they're among the best faces (esp bl!Haydens and bl!Liam) I truly, truly appreciate her commitment to representing them. My favourite art work of hers is this beautiful poster of all the Haydens in kimonos, this beautiful picture of kid!Sloane and Kim, Liam helping the Heir plant her tree, Hana with a teasing mile and her signature hot chocolate, and of course this recent one of Kiara experiencing intense secondhand embarrassment 😄
@cassiopeiacorvus - There's an incredible style, attitude and verve about her work. She's done a depiction of every MC she's created thus far and I find them amazing coz she draws them with a body diversity that you won't often find in canon. Some of my favourite artworks of hers include a drawing of Xanthe and the ACoR MC in their "sexy red outfits", a reworking of Kiara's Costume Gala outfit (which is, btw, FAR BETTER than anything PB came up with for her), Jax and Lily with the BB MC and Leah and LH MC being a "black power couple" as Cassi put it 🤗
@toyhenoctus - I absolutely love their cute and vibrant comics, with cheeky and vibrant characters. Whether it's the gun-toting Siobhan or Effie who wants to declare her love for Aurora Emery to the world, it's always a treat to read them!!
@ohmyblues - She was a recent find, and I absolutely loved her Hana drawings! The first one I saw of hers featured Hana by the Valtoria lake, during the lantern festival, and the use of colours was so unbelievable and Hana looked so enigmatic in the picture. But I think my absolute favourite so far was the one they made of Hana at the piano. The texturing of the silver dress was so detailed and sublime, and her expression of being lost in the music was blissful to see.
@shazrystyles - Shaz is an absolute treasure! I've always loved her work but got to meet her personally when a friend bought a commission from her for me as a gift. Her artwork is so soft and delicate and so fun and fresh at the same time. My absolute favourites include this compilation of Hayden Young sketches, this supercute sketch of Zig performing ballet, this amazing one of Liam as a fencer and here is Hana and her MC on their wedding day 🥹
@burnwoods - Their art and style is so beautiful and interesting, and honestly they depict the characters in such a gorgeous, realistic way. I love the watercolor, stepped-right-out-of-a-painting quality of their work. My favourite was one of the entire cast of TRR/H, a picture of Rafael and the OH MC hugging and looking like the giddy reunited lovers that they are, and this cute picture of the entire ITB crew!
@they-callme-ami - Just the fact that they do such incredible art of black characters brings me so much joy 🥰🥰🥰 Here's their awesome commission page! I'm new to their art so I'm really excited to reblog them and have more people see them!!
@ellezelindraws - I absolutely love their drawings of Hana Lee (personal favourite is the one of Hana in a pink cheongsam) and their lovely cartoons of Hana and the MC as a married couple (like this one of the MC dreaming Hana might be bald, Hana gazing admiringly at a sleeping MC, and goth!Hana). They've done some other incredible art of wlw in particular as well, like Sabina, Annabelle, Ava and Kamilah. I can't wait to see more of their art!!
@danniseyebrows - They make incredible art of a lot of characters but the ones I am most familiar with are her TRR MCs (she has one each for each LI!) My favourite of the lot is her Hana MC Valerie, and one of my most enduringly favourite works of theirs is a depiction of the MC reacting to the dress that Hana made for her (in Shanghai) in a way that truly acknowledges these women as being in love with each other 💗
If any of their commissions are open, please do check them out and consider commissioning art from them...you definitely won't be disappointed!

Omg I was so certain ACOR would get the highest score in your grading post. Why not A+?
I love ACoR. I absolutely adore it and sentimentally it would be a close tie between ACoR and TC&TF but I use a grading system for a reason.
ACoR got high marks for story, romance scenes, LIs and MC, which are the things I love best about it. Portia is at the top of my MC rankings and I doubt she will be de-throned.
It did well in almost every other category but what dropped it down from A+ to A was side characters/friend group. There is no real friend group, no memorable side characters and Xanthe is treated attrociously. The points lost there (plus a few other categories being A/A-) were enough to knock it down from A+ to A.

i meant every mc in general but i agree!! mah mc definitely has their shit sorted compared to other mcs and i didn’t think about there being any significance to the name but it would be really interesting if pb did something with it. i don’t have vip so idk if it’s expanded upon but mah mc ftw fr
OHHHH… sorry 😭 i agree w/ u then. also pb likes making the mc the ugliest in the room at any given time fr. like i can name a side character that looks better than mc in every book i.e. xanthe is hotter than acor mc. also i have vip and have played every chap and mc’s name hasnt been expanded on so far!

Xanthe: Courtesan, Rival, Pawn
Sic semper tyrannis
It's the Ides of March, which always reminds me of A Courtesan of Rome. In honor of the date, I'd like to repurpose one of my replies on the Choices Reddit into a post about the mistreatment of the character of Xanthe. The original reply can be seen here.
I've always found the fandom's tendency to downplay Xanthe's final fate disturbing. I've heard various people say that she deserved it, that they enjoyed her comeuppance. On one memorable occasion, I recall a user claiming that Lena had the right to sell Xanthe into sex slavery in Sicily because she owned her, a statement which is both untrue and absolutely disgusting.
However, I won't exclusively blame the fandom for Xanthe's mistreatment. Fandom is often racist to Black characters and Black women in particular. But the teams who write them often treat them just as badly, if not worse, than the fandom. No one could laugh about Xanthe being sold into slavery if the ACOR team hadn't written it in the first place.
Xanthe's treatment reveals the cracks at the center of ACOR. It takes what is ostensibly a feminist story and reveals it to be as progressive as every #girlboss campaign put on by a company that wants money. Xanthe's fate is disproportionate, out of character for the people involved in the scene, and contradicts the morality previously established by the book.
Xanthe is mean, vindictive, petty, xenophobic, and downplays MC's trauma. But these flaws do not mean she is allowed to be stripped of her agency and sold, especially in comparison to the fates of other characters.
Aquila and Caesar certainly get their due. However, Antony remains relatively unscathed despite actively participating in the genocide of the Gauls and giving MC as a "gift" to Caesar if she doesn't romance him. Cassius is softer than his real life counterpart, which is a narrative decision I disagree with but understand. The most they get is a broken heart, a vase to the brain, and a footnote at the end of the book.
The framing of Xanthe's departure is also worrying. Lena and Syphax are appallingly out of character. MC's ruthlessness is consistent depending on how the player characterizes her.
Lena, however, is a woman who frees all the people sold to her. She makes it clear several times that MC has agency in the patrons she chooses and how far she takes the relationship. She raised Xanthe to be Rome's premier courtesan, yet she's willing to sell her off at the drop off the hat?
Syphax, along with Sabina, I would argue are the moral compasses of the book. Syphax isn't fond of Xanthe-- for very misogynistic reasons-- but he spends the majority of the book enslaved as a gladiator. He didn't hate it, but working for Lena for so long would give him knowledge of the differing circumstances. Yet he also uncharacteristically throws Xanthe away. In fact, he's the one who delivers her to the boat that takes her away.
The worst part of the scene is that it's played for laughs. If this was portrayed as the characters crossing the line, I would understand. Instead, the scene contradicts the morality previously established by the narrative.
Let's compare Xanthe to two other female characters: Sabina and MC.
Sabina was married to Aquila against her will as a child. She spends the vast majority of the book in fear of sexual violence. Despite the marriage of young girls being accepted in Ancient Rome, the narrative goes out of its way to illustrate that her situation is abhorrent. So why is Xanthe being sold away from her home, to a man she doesn't know, where she doesn't have the safety or support of the scholae acceptable by the book's standards?
MC's tribe is slaughtered and she's enslaved. This is portrayed as wrong and MC's quest for vengeance is deemed justifiable. Part of what makes Xanthe irredeemable in some reader's eyes is her dismissal of MC's trauma. So I ask again, why is the narrative is suddenly alright with doing a similar thing to Xanthe without acknowledging the hypocrisy? The way the narrative uplifts MC for her wiles, her reading of Catullus, her beguiling red dress, while denigrates Xanthe for doing the same is a microcosm of how she's treated as a whole. It's easier for the reader to dismiss the horror of her fate (and similar situations are framed as horrifying within the narrative) because the narrative dismisses her.
Xanthe's treatment comes out of a desire to uplift the MC. Every other female character in ACOR serves the MC in some way, whether they act as a love interest, a plot device, or a petty rival in Xanthe's case. The story goes out of it's way to erase prominent women in the Roman Republic like Servilia, or Portia, or Fulvia, so that it can act like the MC is the only woman with political power. It even ignores Sabina's potential for political maneuvering after she self-actualizes. Delphinia's plot ends as soon as she comes in contact with her daughter again. The only other political woman we see is Cleopatra, who has clearly had her characterization influenced by Roman propaganda about her.
But it's Xanthe who's treated the worse. The woman raised from childhood to see success only through the lens of pleasing men. The woman who was Rome's premier courtesan before the MC, yet has her talents and skills downplayed and mocked. The woman who isn't allowed to grow past her initial characterization while every bitchy white woman that any other MC meets has the narrative bend over backwards to justify her actions or redeem her. But not Xanthe. No. Xanthe's reward is sex slavery.

'I don't get straight people going "Uuugh I don't want Poppy to be an LI that's so cliche we already got that with Becca" like.... Yes? We ONLY got that with Becca. Xanthe? Nope. Olivia? Not in your dreams, etc etc... They say the "Bitchy/Rival girl becoming an LI" is a cliche trope but it literally only happened once with PB. While on the other hand, there is a thousand of "asshole guy that become nicer later" (Beckett, Ethan, Justin, etc)  Anyway, let Poppy be an LI cos we're gay and need it'

Since you've played acor, do you think that it's a good book? I've been thinking of starting it especially since it seems much better than a lot of the recent stuff PB's been putting out, but I heard that jbh was the writer for it and I'm wondering if I should give it a miss instead
It is yes, story-wise overall a good book, and probably one of Choices’ better written ones. I believe I said once before that you wouldn’t be missing much if you decided to skip it because JBH got caught liking TERF tweets and it knowing the lead creator is a TERF made you uncomfortable, but I wasn’t entirely being truthful. It is good, mostly.
I say mostly because there are some fucking yikes bits, to put it mildly. At the forefront was the treatment of Xanthe. Look I’m just going to say that giving one of the few black women in the story Jennifer’s beloved “jealous bitch” archetype and then having her fate be that, to the approval of the MC was always going to make people uncomfortable in the least.
So I guess the question on everyone’s minds is: by playing A Courtesan of Rome, are you supporting Jennifer B. Hepler? My answer to that is I honestly don’t know, but probably not. I don’t know if she gets residuals for it or anything. But I will say she definitely is not getting any social capital and influence by people playing and occasionally blogging about a years-old Choices book that she was the lead writer on. Y’know this isn’t like the situation with a certain other game by a certain other TERF author. JBH is not a face of the anti-transgender hate movement, and she’s not spending the vast wealth and influence she doesn’t have to oppose trans liberation — at least as far as I’m aware. Who knows, maybe she’s become a rising star since last I’ve heard of her. But my answer at least today is fuck JBH, but playing ACoR is probably fine.
