i didn't really love kenneth branagh's first adaptations of christie's novels (murder on the orient express and death on the nile). they were like fine but i thought they were nothing that the suchet tv series did better for cheaper. BUT haunting in venice was VERY fun.
I loved the concept of a detective who is a pillar of logic and justice slowly unraveling and beginning to question the fabric of reality. a genius combo tbh.
movie had like almost nothing to do with the book halloween party (which is worth reading in its own right). but I kinda love that. like the movie does feel self-indulgent and fanficcy but in the best way. the writer and director just went for vibes that appealed to them specifically as we all should really.

Actually surprised that people loved Ariadne Oliver in the books because I always thought she was such a caricature of Christie herself/female novelist she didn't seem real. I've never had any empathy for her, she was ridiculed by the narration ALL THE TIME. Christie's sidekicks are not the best characters, I'm not fond of Hastings either.
(Spoilers for Hauting in Venice) In a way, the twist made me like her because she was more human suddenly, and also, smart. She tricked Poirot! He found out at the end, but still, she did manage to outsmart him at the beginning. And very interesting avatar of Christie, "I made you!" Very clever.

“A Haunting in Venice” (Some spoilers)
I saw Kenneth Branagh’s 3rd outing as Hercule Poirot this week. “A Haunting in Venice” is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s “Hallowe'en Party” but it’s substantially different - the plot, the characters, the motive for murders, and some of the victims. It makes you wonder why the bothered to use that novel at all.
In the original, the first (?) victim is Joyce Reynolds, a 13 year old girl who is drowned in a bucket of water. In the movie she’s replaced with adult Joyce Reynolds, a psychic medium, played by Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh conducts a seance early in the film trying to reach the deceased daughter of her hostess. She dies (pushed off a balcony onto a spike) before she can conduct a second seance. The second (?) murder later in the film was awkward and didn’t quite make sense.
Because all the talk of ghosts, Poirot begins to see things and hears a girl singing. He doubts his detective skills (Sacré bleu!) Could there really be ghosts? A few of Christie’s stories involved psychic mediums but I don’t think she ever suggested spiritualism was real, so it seemed odd that Poirot considered ghosts might be real.
As with the original, the story involves Ariadne Oliver, a mystery book author and friend of Hercule. When it was announced that Tina Fey would play Ariadne I thought it was very strange casting. I couldn’t imagine the very modern Fey in a 1940s period movie.
Fey was “okay” but what bugged me is the changes made to Ariadne’s character. Instead of the loyal friend, Fey’s character was secretly manipulating Poirot for her financial advantage. WTF!
The Venice location certainly was great. In the book, the story took place in yet another quaint English town. Early scenes of Poirot in Venice and the suspects arriving at the palazzo were beautiful. It made me want to visit Venice again.
Although the movie is less than 2 hours, quite a bit of time was spent on creating an eerie mood so the pacing was slow. Then when the plot reached the moment where Poirot spells everything out, it felt rushed.
“A Haunting in Venice” is worth seeing if you’re a Poirot fans (just be prepared that it’s not faithful to the book).

I read that it wasn't super faithful to the book of agatha christie.......but it isn't anything like the book!!!!!!
The few things that they share are this:
1-The name of one of the victims (Joyce Reynolds)
2-The legends of the little garden and place of murders
3-The myths (kinda)
4-The fact that it's a parent killing its child (or trying in the book)
5-And the fact that one killing happens in Halloween
Nothing else 👩🏻🦲
Like nothing
Because that isn't Poroit!!!!!!
And Ariadne is so badly twisted.
If you didn't read the book and didn't know the characters, then it's possible you may like the movie.

A Haunting in Venice (movie review)
Just saw the new Agatha Cristie movie, and omg it was so good! The movie is beautiful and probably the best of the Hercule Poirot movies that have come out in the last few years. And with its October release, it's the perfect movie to watch if you're looking for something spooky but not too scary. It's not a spoiler, but there is one actress who isn't as strong as the rest of the cast. It's the only minor thing I can't think of to criticize, and everyone else is just so charismatic and compelling that it's easy to overlook. The only other thing is that the movie is so different from the book it's based on, so if you want to go and read the book after seeing it or go in expecting to see the book you read, you'll be out of luck. But overall, it was fantastic. And I absolutely recommend watching it, and if you don't want to see it in theaters, it should be up on Disney Plus in the next couple of months.

AU where Bouc lived through Death On the Nile and he and Rosalie are in A Haunting in Venice (because they're married and adore each other). Rosalie and Poirot both think the seance and ghost stuff is all stupid and are working together to solve the mystery because they're both Smart (and Rosalie would figure out Poirot was drugged sooner than he did himself). Bouc doesn't believe in the haunting stuff either but he's starting to freak out a little (but is also a little preoccupied with Ariadne Oliver trying to move in on his territory as Poirot's best friend).

I just saw a haunting in Venice thought it was great but why did they start giggling when the murder was revealed as the mother and when she got flipped over that balcony
why did I start laughing it was a giggle but why why did I do that I don’t know if I actually thought it was funny or it’s just like inane giggling I guess very good movie though I did guess the reveal is the mother the kid also do you like that the two immigrants were not the murderer tho that was nice
Dr. dude literally stabbed himself in the back hilarious
Did like that there was an actual ghost there though do you love a good show with the supernatural
Love that he’s back on his a game with the year guy at the end with that was also funny

Secret of the Old Clock: It’s magically 1930 again, this game feels so far off brand from pretty much all of the other ones imo but the music goes HARD and there’s def some homoerotic tensions between a dead old man and his live-in psychic
Legend of the Crystal Skull: make a curio shop owner sneeze, collect glass eyeballs, watch a Gerard Way look-alike cry, and maybe get buried alive
Haunting of Castle Malloy: banshees and letterpress and a pub that conveniently only serves juice. Terrible Irish accents. Try to find a missing groom for a wedding but also enjoy a walking sim that walked so Stardew Valley could run
Creature of Kapu Cave: get stuck in a tourist trap resort by a guy who calls himself Big Island Mike, then get stuck in a forest with an entomologist who makes you do her work for her, then get stuck in a research facility with an angry white guy who makes you do his work and then falls asleep. Music slaps but no idea what the plot of the game is supposed to be. Also do a “freaky friday” style switch with the Hardy Boys every time you call them on your cell phone.
Last train to Blue Moon canyon: picture Paris Hilton inviting you on a train and then she goes missing. Also on the train with you: the worst police detective, Zak Bagans impersonator, and Colleen Hoover-vibes.
White Wolf of Icicle Creek: “I fired. And I missed. I missed again. I got sad. I had a popsicle.”
