University of Pennsylvania Must Stop All Its Sponsorship Of, and Stop the Use of Its Facilities and Its Logo, to Host The “Palestine Writes” Event, for the Following Reasons:

University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) receives federal funds, and is therefore required to provide a harassment-free learning environment for its Jewish students under Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The “Palestine Writes” festival incites harassment and attacks on Jewish and pro-Israel students. Holding “Palestine Writes” is therefore a civil rights violation that may result in UPenn losing its federal funding.

The university cannot guarantee protection of Jewish students in an environment influenced by the unabashed antisemitic operatives speaking at this event, including:

a convicted Palestinian-Arab terrorist;

many speakers who support designated terrorist groups, including Hamas, Palestine Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Turkish terror group IHH, the Fatah/PLO Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades;

many speakers who support and have assisted convicted terrorists;

many speakers who incite and call for Intifadas (terror wars against Jews, in which thousands of Jews have been murdered and maimed); and

notorious antisemites, such as Roger Waters, who uses Nazi imagery to malign Jews.

Removing this event from U. Penn would not inhibit free speech. “Free speech” does not require the university to host or support hate speech, or speech that it disagrees with. The university has the right to decide who to sponsor and who uses its facilities to speak.

UPenn has already set the precedent of punishing speech that it disagrees with, contradicting its claim that it is unable to exercise any authority over the “Palestine Writes” event. Another event also makes clear that Penn is selective about which “free speech” it protects. For example, UPenn has taken, or tried to take, actions against Professor Amy Wax, M.D., JD due to her controversial statements about Black law students’ achievement. The university took a class away from her, tried to sanction and fire her despite her tenure, and harassed her. We are not saying that we agree with Wax’s views but the University never defended Amy Wax’s controversial statements under their freedom of speech thesis. UPenn is therefore obligated to take action against the “Palestine Writes” hate-fest, or else must admit to endorsing antisemitism and accept the consequences, in accordance with U.S. law.

The university is failing to take responsibility for its own department(s) that are co-sponsoring “Palestine Writes.” UPenn gives funds to these departments, which in turn are co-sponsoring and providing resources to “Palestine Writes.”

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)’s UPenn and Temple U branches are co-sponsors of “Palestine Writes”, and many speakers are involved with SJP. As ZOA explained in its open letter to UPenn leaders: SJP activists systemically intimidate, harass and have even physically assaulted Jewish and pro-Israel students. SJP aggressively disrupts pro-Israel events – and screams for Israel’s destruction and “Intifada! Intifada!” (The murder of Jews). Hosting any event with SJP is antithetical to allowing free speech, and the university would be well within its rights to not allow the event. In fact, Fordham University successfully denied SJP official club status on its campus, and won the ensuing litigation for this very reason. The New York State Appellate Division opined that Fordham University’s decision to deny official club status to SJP was appropriate because “the proposed [Fordham SJP] club, which would have been affiliated with a national organization [SJP] reported to have engaged in disruptive and coercive actions on other campuses, would work against, rather than enhance, respondent’s commitment to open dialogue and mutual learning and understanding. . .” (Awad, et al v. Fordham Univ., N.Y. App. Div. 1st Dept., Dec. 20, 2022.)

“Palestine Writes” is not actually about promoting arts. The content that is being celebrated and called “art” (films, children’s games, poems, etc.) consists of numerous speeches by Jew-haters, and is all being used for the purpose of promoting hatred against Israel and Jews, and annihilating Israel and replacing Israel with “Palestine.” (See details in ZOA’s open letter about the “Palestine Writes” program and speakers confirming this.) The Palestinian Authority pays terrorists to murder Jews; and Hamas’ charter calls for the murder of every Jew. These are the entities that “Palestine Writes” wants to replace Israel with.

Holding “Palestine Writes” at UPenn sets a dangerous precedent that will inspire more Jew-hatred and attacks on Jews around the country.

UPenn will have a dramatic drop in donations. Many donors are vowing to not give UPenn another penny ever, due to this hate-fest, and the value of this prestigious Ivy League university will plummet.

Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (a Pennsylvania government entity); and

Australia Council on the Arts (an Australian government entity).

‘A place for all’ – UNStudio’s inclusive masterplan selected as the winning proposal for Sochi Waterfront

UNStudio’s concept masterplan has been selected as the winning proposal in the competition for the development of Sochi Waterfront on the Russian Black Sea coast.

In the intervention proposal, Sochi Coast becomes SoCo: the ultimate destination, designed to create opportunities for locals and attractions for visitors. SoCo is a revitalising leisure resort that celebrates a healthy life, provides grades of luxury, fun, and glamour, as well as unique adventures and memorable experiences.

SoCo builds new trends on the backbone of existing resources. Nature, culture, and innovation are enhanced and integrated into SoCo’s identity. Embedded technology supports short and long terms targets and executes, monitors and enhances a built and green environment. But above all, SoCo is an inclusive community, ‘a place for all’.

About Sochi

Sochi Coast, with its characteristic contemporary architecture, retail, gastronomic experiences, and extensive green areas is recognised as one of Russia’s most important holiday destinations and is considered to be the main anchor among the Black Sea Coast Resorts.

In addition to being a well-known holiday destination, Sochi is famous for hosting the Winter Olympics in 2014, meaning that it also enjoys a considerable network of connections and existing infrastructure.

Sochi is also a historical seaport that is home to the most famous concert hall in the south of Russia, a museum of art, the Winter & Summer Theatre, and numerous other cultural venues. A goal of the masterplan is to integrate and activate these venues within the new development, in order to create a familiar yet strong and unified identity.

UNStudio’s waterfront masterplan proposal rebrands Sochi as a vibrant and inclusive mixed-use programme that focuses on hospitality, business, and culture while benefiting from the grand cultural legacy of the existing context of the city.

Inclusive approach

Design goals of the intervention are linked to the creation of a community that will rejuvenate the population and ensures the life cycle of different micro-neighbourhoods. Purposeful green areas will interconnect various smart green ecosystems, which have different lifestyles, while the presence of cultural, design, and innovative districts will encourage health, wellbeing, creativity, and tech innovation.

One of the parameters to create a successful 21st-century district is to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for an ever-changing society. In order to achieve this, the proposal follows three important concepts:

Year Round Destination: providing a well-balanced combination of principally flexible programme components ensures that 24-hour activity and winter-summer transitions are always organic, versatile, and engaging. Our goal is to create tendencies and platforms for various businesses and entrepreneurs to experiment with long or short-term projects.

Nurture-Nature: create a built environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and public spaces that foster positive emotionsby enhancing our connection to the environment.

Inclusive Neighborhood: integrates nature with human living, different demographics, and social groups.

Urban Design

A framework for the masterplan – nature and human-scale interventions – forms core urban design principles, while a ‘cultural spine’ connects all the important cultural venues within the city and creates a platform for creative minds to work perform and exhibit their work. Not only throughout the year but also during events such as the Sochi Architectural Biennale, Sochi Design weeks, Sochi Film Festival and Sochi Fashion weeks.

The design concept for the masterplan follows five key interventions:

1. Extension: a beach area expands outwards, while a new marina appears at the end of the plot. Marina City is a business and innovation centre for either business or leisure travelers with international standard conference facilities, high-end hotels, vibrant nightlife, a globally recognised Design and Innovation Museum, and a Yacht club.

2. Magnets and anchors: two very different attractors are established at opposite ends of the beach. A relaxed and open Festival Village, located close to the city centre, forms a north anchor. It is designated for local activities, community use, and casual gathering. Friends can meet for a beach party around fire pits or browse bookstalls at the weekend markets. Visitors from further away will be attracted to the annual calendar of events – carnival, street parties, and outdoor summer concerts. This is a low-stress, low intensity, community-focused face of SoCo at the south end.

A new Marina City at the other end of the beach creates a completely new urban quarter with business and innovation functions and a focus on nightlife. This south anchor is a lively, expressive, pulsating, and exciting place.

3. Intensity increase: as you move from Festival Village towards the new Marina City, physical and visual intensity increases in both experience and scale; there is a change in vibe and an increase in volume. In between the two anchors three themed districts emerge from design principles and attractions: SoCo Playgrounds, SoCo Arts & Culture, and SoCo Healthy Lifestyle. Each district is defined by a different character, different urban fabric, green environment, and functional mix, with various services and potential target groups.

4. Catch a wave: three different routes (The Lanes, The Boardwalk and The Green Wave), each with its own distinct character, connect either end of the waterfront, providing three different speeds, atmospheres and experiences as you move along the waterfront.

The Lanes is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars and sheltered from the waterfront. The Boardwalk, on the other hand, is lined with palm trees, beach bars, and bathing spots. Weaving in between these two routes is The Green Wave, a meandering bio-diverse corridor and nature walk that interconnects all layers of activity.

5. The ‘Pops’: at key intersections with local landmarks, each of the three routes is punctuated by ‘Pops’; attractions and destinations such as concert halls, pop-up galleries, a local market, botanical gardens, university outposts, satellite cultural institutions, open-air cinemas, etc.

Technology and sustainability

Technology forms an integrated part of the design that can set up short and long terms targets, execute, monitor and enhance a built and green environment.

Together, pockets form a network of healthy green spaces with real-time data on outdoor environmental health. This data creates new ways for residents and visitors to interact with each other and the green environment.

More fully, the proposed master plan aims to define new targets for the city of Sochi as part of an overarching metropolitan and European health strategy.

The sustainable environmental strategy should be part of any new city development, thus, carbon neutrality targets, biodiversity, urban climate resilience, and life quality are base targets that the proposal aims to achieve.

INTERVIEW [ Montpellier Pimp My Queer #1 ] - JULIEN DE BOMERANI

Julien de Bomerani est modèle le photo le jour, artiste performeur et organisateur d’évènements la nuit.

Julien est apparu à plusieurs reprises dans des spectacles d’envergure internationale avec notamment la troupe « Les nuits Blanches » et a travaillé avec Régine pour le lancement de sa tournée « La Grande Zoa en tournée » en 2015.

Il s’est fait connaître de la scène des clubs et à affirmer son statut de performeur pluri-disciplinaire à travers sa résidence de plus de cinq ans dans le club mythique de la nuit Montpelliéraine : la Villa Rouge et au Moulin Rouge de Genève.

En tant que modèle homme Julien a participé aux campagnes pour Nutralya en tant qu' « égérie » homme , les sous vêtement de marque Body Q / Wapo Underwear et HUNK2

Co-fondateur des soirées montpelliéraines La Radieuse / Flawless et de la SEX & VIP, née en 2000 à la Villa Rouge, 12 ans de succès, 631 samedis et plus d’ un million de clubbers.

Julien est aussi un modèle engagé à travers ses choix artistiques, il a participé au festival Pride OFF, en marge de la semaine de la Gay Pride à Montpellier en tant qu'acteur de la vie gay, le festival lui a consacré une partie de l’espace de sa galerie, pour exposer son travail en tant que modèle.

Présente-nous ton parcours artistique et tes activités.

Hello tout le monde ! Je m'appelle Julien de Bomerani, originaire du Sud de la France, vivant actuellement dans une petite ville proche de Montpellier ( j'aime bien aussi me dire que je ne suis pas constamment dans le tumulte de la ville lol ! ).

Je suis modèle photo alternatif, performer, et organisateur de soirées !

Plus en détail, je me suis créé un personnage lorsque je travaillais en tant que barman à la Villa Rouge ( j'étais barman en parallèle de mes études à l'époque ), un personnage qui ne rentre dans aucune case, à la croisée des chemins entre l'homme et la femme, empruntant beaucoup d'éléments à connotation féminine comme les talons, le maquillage, mais sans pour autant chercher le travestissement total, en ne cachant pas mon corps d'homme, au contraire, en le mettant même en avant, sur un visage plus féminin. Ce n'est pas vraiment du drag, pas vraiment de l'androgynie... j'appelle ça une « creature » mais j'aime plutot me dire que je suis juste un garçon ...libre ! Au diable les étiquettes.

Tout ça pour en revenir au fait que ce personnage créé il y a plusieurs années m'a emmener à poser pour divers photographes, toujours dans ce style très alternatif... puis tout s'est enchainé très vite, on a commencé à me téléphoner pour danser dans des clubs, j'ai continué les photos, je me suis mis au sport, j'ai commencé à poser également totalement naturel sans aucun artifice pour des photographes de renommé mondiale, des marques m'ont approché, j'ai rencontré des compagnies de spectacles, j'ai appris le feu, les echasses, je me suis diversifier, j'ai continué les photos et les spectacles, puis j'ai commencé à organiser des soirées.... voilà les grandes lignes ! Très grandes lignes ...

En quoi le choix d'organiser des évènement comme La Radieuse ou la Prohibition en tant que performeur LGBT+ a une dimension politique et militante ?

Mon militantisme réside dans l'exposition... l'exposition passe par ma page facebook, publique et ouverte à tous, par assumer tout ce que je fais, assumer mon visage démaquillé mais aussi mon visage maquillé au même endroit sur le web, et également par investir des endroits à travers l'organisation d'évènements ou les gens peuvent venir comme ils ont envie d'être, ou ils ne seront juger de rien.

J'ai décidé de m'exposer et d'assumer qui je suis pour faire évoluer les mentalités, et tant pis si ça ne s'est toujours pas bien passé.

J'aime recevoir ce message du jeune gay qui ne s'assume pas encore et qui voit à travers ma vie sur le Web que OUI c'est possible d'être qui l'on a envie et de s'affranchir des normes, de la morale.... et j'aime d'autant plus si ce jeune vient à ma rencontre lors d'une soirée que j'organise, ou il sait qu'il pourra mettre une paire de talons si il en a envie, ou il se sentira libre et en sécurité.

Tes lines-up sont 100% LGBT+ ? Quels sont les artistes qui participent à tes soirées ?

Mes Lines-Up sont pour l'instant 100% LGBT, mais ça pourrait tendre à changer, évoluer... je suis ouvert au changement. Tant que l'artiste respecte et accepte les LGBT+... why not ! Et surtout que les LGBT+ l'apprecie. Pour moi la musique rassemble, peu importe qui l'a joue, on est tous là pour passer un bon moment, une bonne soirée avec ses amis... LGBT+ ou non. Disons que je serai contre booker un artiste qui serait contraire à cet état d'esprit.

Mes derniers bookings sont très accès sur la musique électronique, la Prohibition est une soirée plutot underground, j'ai Lorent Air en résident ( qui était aussi le résident historique de la Villa Rouge pendant 18 ans ) et il a joué lors de la première édition au côté de Manue G ( Résidente Beardrop ) et dernièrement avec John Dixon ( Créateur de l'UNDER à Paris, résident de la Démence) .

J'ai également reçu toute une multitude de créatures Queer, Queen, Androgyne...

Quelles sont tes influences ?

Ouhla....Beth Dito, Madonna, Charles Bukowski, Grace Jones, Taylor Momsen, Frederic Beigbeder, Françoise Sagan, RuPaul,Dita Von Teese, Virginie Despentes, Jeffree Star, Bret Easton Ellis, Lolita Pille, Gainsbourg... Je serai incapable de citer toutes les personnes qui m'inspirent...Mais le dénominateur commun de toutes c'est une liberté d'être qui émane de qui elles sont, beaucoup ont marqué leur époque, ont marqué une évolution des mentalités de part une cassure avec qui elles étaient et / ou la société dans laquelle elles vivaient, et surtout, ce sont pour tous des génies de la provocation (chacun à sa façon).

Comment arrive-t-on, en tant qu'organisateur de Soirée “Gay” à faire vivre des concepts de soirée dans une ville comme Montpellier ?

Alors pour commencer on convoque 2 / 3 amis, on se pose autour d'une table, on boit un verre et on réfléchit !

Non sérieusement, je pense que le secret d'une soirée réussie, ici ou ailleurs, c'est de la faire pour les bonnes raisons... Autrement dit pour moi ça passe par imaginer une soirée à laquelle je voudrais aller si j'étais client, créer la soirée qui me donne l'excitation de sortir comme quand je découvrais la nuit.

Vraiment, ça passe par essayer de me mettre à la place des clubbers et d'imaginer des nuits qui me donneront autant envie qu'à eux de sortir...et pas organiser juste pour la gloire. C'est pour ça que maintenant quand on me demande « C'est quand la prochaine ? » je ne sais jamais... car tant que je n'ai pas trouvé le booking, le visuel, le petit truc en plus qui fera toute la différence sur la précédente, et qui me donnera follement envie d'y être, je ne la ferai pas.

Montpellier est cependant de plus en plus compliqué pour du clubbing gay... il y a un public c'est certain, mais ça a beaucoup changé en 10 ans... Montpellier a perdu de son attractivité en terme de sorties nocturnes, les plus grandes discothèques ont fermé leurs portes une à une... Maintenant on se déplace partout en Europe pour presque rien, avec Facebook et Instagram on est au courant de tout ce qu'il se passe partout, la crise et la répression est également passé par là...

Donc quand on choisit sa date pour organiser on fait très attention car un événement sur Paris ou Barcelone peut avoir des retentissements très néfaste sur une soirée montpellieraine, on regarde aussi à ce qu'on soit pas 2 à organiser le même week-end... heureusement nous nous entendons tous plutôt bien !

As-tu imaginé faire des évènements dans d'autre villes ?

J'ai déjà avec mes anciens concepts eut la chance de pouvoir organiser dans d'autres villes. Ce n'est à l'heure actuelle pas à l'ordre du jour malgré les proposition dans certaines très grandes villes de France... Mais Why not ! Il se passe tellement de chose en 6 mois que peut être ça va arriver plus tôt que prévu.

Tu apportes quelque chose de nouveau sur Montpellier : vous avez un lieu, un concept et un public qui vous suit... C'est quoi les prochaines étapes ?

Je ne sais pas trop... tout mon parcours n'a été que rencontres, concours de circonstances, opportunités, prise de risque... C'est d'ailleurs ce que j'aime dans ce métier. Quand j'ai débarqué à Montpellier pour mes études jamais une seule seconde je n'aurai pensé avoir ce parcours...et j'aime me dire que la suite n'est absolument pas définie, que je vais encore rencontrer des personnes à qui je vais apporter des choses et vice / versa

Ton artiste préférée ?

Je n'ai pas vraiment d'artiste que j'adule par dessus tout... Cependant je rêverai de poser une question à Madonna : Comment une fille qui n'est pas la plus belle, ni la meilleure chanteuse du monde, ni la meilleure danseuse... a pu se hisser au sommet de l'industrie musicale depuis toute ces années ?

Une citation ?

Je me répète souvent ces quelques phrases :

Des endroits que tu recommanderais pour faire la fête ?

Pour la communauté LGBT+ je ne peux que recommander le bar le COXX dans le centre ville de Montpellier et niveau soirées le Dieze Warehouse à Montpellier a une sacrée programmation... allez jettez un œil aux pages facebook de ces 2 établissements, ça vaut le coup ! Plus au niveau national j'adore aller aux soirées Garçon Sauvages à Lyon, BLT sur Paris...

Quel est ton spot à apéro ?

J'ai découvert il y a peu le Mas de Couran car j'ai performé pour le nouvel Afterwork Gay Friendly la TBM... et franchement si vous avez envie d'un cadre somptueux, et de vous dépayser un peu... je vous le conseille vivement !

Que penses-tu de Support your Local Girl Gang ?

C'est Un fantastique support permettant d'exprimer la diversité, sa diversité, de montrer aussi les femmes, et surtout toutes les femmes.....Ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas. De mettre en lumière celles que d'autres médias oublient. Merci de nous permettre aussi de découvrir des artistes géniaux de la scène Queer / Hiphop ! Que ce joli bébé devienne grand !
