If we were to seriously consider a Protag Swap AU, then most of the protags are fucked.

Let's consider P5 for this scenario, since its the most well-known story. The protags considered are Naoya, Tatsuya, Maya, Minato, Kotone, and Yu (and remember, the events of P5 also shape them as they go). Of course, all of them defended the woman and got sued.

I can see everyone but Maya becoming friends with Ryuji and Ann. Those two would get babysitter vibes from Maya instead of reliable older sister (sorry, queen, but maybe you shouldn't have unironically adviced them to Live, Laugh, Love. You're also not a student and have nothing to do with Shujin). We only have Naoya, Tatsuya, Minato, Kotone, and Yu left.

Out of all of them, only Minato, Kotone and Yu would give Akechi the time of day. The rest were either weirded out by his attitude, too annoyed by his plastic smile, or decided it wasn't worth it to get too close to someone investigating the Phantom Thieves (or all of them at the same time). Without the Akechi confidant, the others lost a lot of intel and clues the Phantom Thieves actually got to put the pieces of the mystery together and an ally for the Third Semester.

Kotone never began the Kawakami confidant due to not being invited to Operation Maidwatch. Shame, because she would have reacted a lot like Akira did in lots of main events. I also don't want to put her through the interrogation torture.

Now that I think about it, Yu would have been a smidge more reluctant about the regular Change of Hearts business that the Phantom Thieves undertook. If the circumstances and story aligns, he would go with it in the end, but the entire story and general vibes wouldn't have the same impact than when Akira did it. Minato's Joker is a bit more stoic and way less flashy and passionate about the Phantom Thieves' mission, seeing more like a necessary duty.

In the end, only Akira could do it.

honestly my case for aro/ace Jiang Cheng stems heavily from his list of traits he'd want in a future wife.

like putting aside the fact that his "pickiness" got him canonically blacklisted from a majority of their world's matchmakers, we have this:

naturally beautiful

graceful and obedient

hard-working and thrifty

coming from a respected family

cultivation level not too high

These are all just Standard Things That Ancient Chinese Society Says It's Good For Women To Be.

A woman who is too strong will surpass her husband which is a huge no-no in their society. Too weak and she's a disappointment (read: Jiang Yanli). Marrying within or above your own social class is just expected common sense, especially if you're born upper class.

Then you have these next three points:

personality not too strong

not too talkative

voice not too loud

Of course these are also generic Standard Things That Ancient Chinese Society Says It's Good For Women To Be, but they also stood out to me more than the previous points because all of them remind me of Yu Ziyuan.

Jiang Cheng is very similar to her, and of course even without that he still cares about her. But she was very difficult to please and nurtured his inferiority complex for years. Growing up with her volatility hurt everyone in that house.

AND THEN TACKED ON AT THE VERY END OF THE LIST:

must treat Jin Ling nicely.

So almost all of these bullet points are generic, intangible societal ideals. Rather than being actual preferences for a marriage or to fall in love with, his list reads to me more like this:

Actually Now That I Think About It Don't Be Like My Mom.

BE NICE TO MY NEPHEW.

Even the 'must treat Jin Ling nicely' can be tied back to Yu Ziyuan if you choose to view it a certain way. A new wife might dislike Jin Ling since he was already there prior to her marriage to Jiang Cheng, even if he's a blood relative rather than a good friend's orphaned child.

An official wife could easily get angry or misguidedly jealous. She could distance or mistreat Jin Ling, an elder male child born to people who are now dead. Who does that remind you of...?

Really all this list proves is Jiang Cheng really, really cares about his nephew + Wei Wuxian and wants the child to be raised with sincere kindness and love. Everything else is just like a dart thrown at a dartboard blind. Sure, write that down. People say it's good for women to be like X and say Y and do Z, right? Sure. Okay.

TL;DR - It's easy to view Jiang Cheng as actually being that arrogant and holding people to every single standard in his list, but IMO he just can't think of traits he actually finds attractive in a person beyond Be Ideal, I Guess. Which is painfully relatable and a primary reason why I see him as aro/ace.

What's breaking my heart over and over again is that, during Geto's conversation with Yuki, the sound of applause creeps back to haunt him right the instant Yuki unknowingly feeds the worst part of him, encouraging his darkest thoughts.

But then it stops -- when Yuki reminds him of his humanity. When she reminds him that it's the thoughts that we choose to act upon which define us. That indecision and doubt are sometimes a sign of self struggling against outside forces. That nobody is without dark things, both emotions and thoughts, but it's a part of what makes us human. That, in the end, he has not made his decision yet.

Wasn't it a relief, even if a fleeting, temporary one? To be reminded that he is not the hatred and confusion and resentment festering inside him. That, even though his whole world is faltering, his not that long ago unwavering beliefs are now withering away day by day, he is still in control of himself and his fate. That he is yet to decide what will define him, and it's his and his alone choice to make.

This, after Geto's implying that he's not good enough a person for Haibara to sit next to him.

I keep thinking about how, despite Geto's self isolation, despite his feeling that he's lost and alone in all of this, there were people around him and they were there for him. Yuki, who in her own manner tries to cheer him up and guide him through his desperation (and look, there's only that much she could do). Haibara, who still looks up to him, who asks what Geto wants him to bring for him and who manages to make him laugh a little. Gojo, he does see that Geto is struggling and forsaking taking proper care of himself and does make an attempt to get through to him as best as he can.

But sometimes there are things that cannot be helped. Geto cut himself off from everyone because he convinced himself that he wouldn't be understood. Did he really try to talk to anyone about what's on his mind? Anyone who knows him well enough to also know how to help him? Isn't it why he ends up oversharing to a complete stranger -- because there is no other outlet for his despair? Or no one he allowed himself to see?

It's ever more devastating to watch him spiral and cross the Rubicon after seeing those tiny glimpses of fragile hope for him.

one of my favorite details about the fall of lotus pier is the "oh shit" moment of dawning horror for jiang fenmian when he realizes that zidian recognizes him as one of its masters.

like he knows full well his relationship with his wife is awful. and now he's faced with the fact that for some reason he doesn't fully know yet, at some undisclosed point in time, yu ziyuan gave him full reign of her spiritual weapon.

something has to be VERY wrong for her to relinquish that control and give it to him. it's such a small moment in the grand scheme of things but i really like its role in conveying the complexities of the jiang couple's relationship.

that, combined with jiang fengmian's decision to immediately rebind jiang cheng and wei wuxian. he keeps them where yu ziyuan had put them for protection and goes to join her to fight for their home together. it's just so meaningful. tragically bittersweet.
