Celebration
Tumblr media
The crowd roared with excitement as YN YLN stepped into the ring, ready to defend her title against Mickey James. The tension in the arena was palpable, and the energy was infectious. Among the sea of cheering fans, Jeff Hardy stood by the entrance ramp, his heart pounding with a mix of nerves and anticipation.
As the match unfolded, YN showcased her incredible athleticism and determination, going toe-to-toe with Mickey James in an intense battle for the women’s championship. The audience watched in awe as YN executed high-flying maneuvers and strategic holds, determined to prove herself as a worthy champion.
In the front row, Lita and Matt Hardy sat side by side, their eyes glued to the action in the ring. Lita, a trailblazing WWE legend herself, couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride for YN’s accomplishments. She glanced over at Matt, who nodded in agreement, sharing the sentiment.
Backstage, Jeff paced nervously, his thoughts consumed by YN’s match. He knew the sacrifices and dedication she had poured into her wrestling career. She had trained relentlessly, overcome setbacks, and proven herself time and again. He believed in her, and he wanted nothing more than to see her succeed.
Finally, the moment arrived. YN executed a breathtaking finishing move that left Mickey James sprawled on the mat. The referee’s hand hit the mat three times, signaling the end of the match. The arena erupted in cheers as YN was declared the victor and the new women’s champion.
With adrenaline still coursing through her veins, YN’s eyes locked onto Jeff’s figure at the entrance ramp. As she climbed out of the ring, the crowd’s cheers served as a symphony of celebration. She reached Jeff, and their eyes met in a mixture of pride, relief, and affection.
“You did it,” Jeff said, his voice a mix of awe and happiness. “You look happier than I’ve ever seen you.”
YN’s smile was radiant as she embraced him. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” she replied, her voice filled with gratitude. “Your support means everything to me.”
Lita and Matt joined them, sharing in the joyous moment. The four of them stood together, a united front of friends and loved ones, celebrating YN’s hard-fought victory. The journey had been marked by challenges, but the triumph was all the sweeter because of it.
As the confetti rained down in celebration and the crowd’s cheers continued to echo, YN knew that this was a milestone in her career she would cherish forever. And in Jeff’s embrace, she found a sense of fulfillment and happiness that words couldn’t adequately express.
After the exhilarating victory and the roar of the crowd had subsided, YN, Jeff, Lita, and Matt headed backstage, their spirits high and the excitement still palpable. They found themselves in a private area, away from the bustling chaos of the event. YN’s championship belt was slung over her shoulder, a constant reminder of her hard-earned triumph.
“Tonight calls for a celebration!” Lita exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “How about we find a great place to go out and have some fun?”
YN’s grin widened, and she looked at Jeff, feeling his hand gently squeeze hers. “Sounds like a plan to me,” she said, her voice filled with excitement.
Matt chimed in, his characteristic grin present. “I know a fantastic spot nearby with good food and an awesome atmosphere. What do you think?”
As they made their way to the restaurant, the group laughed and reminisced about the journey that had led them to this moment. Jeff and Matt shared stories of their wrestling adventures, while Lita recounted some of her own experiences in the ring. YN listened with rapt attention, feeling grateful to be surrounded by friends who understood the unique challenges and triumphs of the wrestling world.
At the restaurant, they were greeted warmly by the staff and shown to a reserved table. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, and the group settled in, ready to enjoy a well-deserved meal.
As they savored their food and shared more stories, Jeff leaned in close to YN, his eyes reflecting his admiration. “You were incredible out there,” he whispered. “Seeing you in that ring, giving it your all, it made me so proud.”
YN blushed, her heart skipping a beat. “Thank you, Jeff. Your support means everything to me. I couldn’t have done it without you by my side.”
Their eyes locked, and in that moment, the noise of the restaurant seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in their own world of connection and shared dreams.
Lita, always the perceptive one, nudged Matt with a knowing smile. “Looks like we’re in the presence of a power couple,” she whispered, earning a chuckle from Matt.
After their meal, they headed back to their hotel, the night still young and full of possibilities. Back in their room, YN and Jeff shared a quiet moment on the balcony, gazing out at the city lights.
“You know,” Jeff began, his voice soft, “when I first saw you in the ring, there was something different about you. Your determination, your spirit—it’s infectious.”
YN leaned against the railing, her heart swelling with emotion. “And you, Jeff, you’re my rock. Your unwavering belief in me gives me the strength to keep pushing forward.”
As they stood side by side, the cityscape before them seemed to shimmer with the promise of new beginnings. The night was a testament to their shared journey, the challenges they’d overcome, and the happiness they’d found in each other’s company.
As Jeff and YN returned to their hotel room, a lingering sense of excitement and closeness enveloped them. The air seemed charged with a newfound energy, a blend of their shared accomplishments and the electrifying atmosphere of the evening. YN’s heart raced as Jeff closed the door behind them, his eyes locked onto hers.
Jeff took a step closer, his fingers gently tracing the curve of YN’s jawline. “You looked so breathtaking out there,” he whispered, his voice husky with emotion.
YN’s breath hitched, her eyes never leaving his. “You’re the reason I had the strength to give it my all,” she replied, her voice barely more than a whisper.
In that moment, any remaining distance between them evaporated, and their lips met in a passionate kiss. The taste of victory and desire mingled as their kiss deepened, a testament to their shared passion and connection.
As their lips parted, Jeff’s gaze burned with intensity, his fingers deftly undoing the straps of YN’s championship belt. The belt fell to the floor with a soft thud, a symbolic shedding of the weight she had carried throughout the match.
YN’s fingers moved to the buttons of Jeff’s shirt, her movements eager yet deliberate. With each button that came undone, their desire intensified, a flame that had been ignited by the adrenaline of the evening’s events.
Their clothes fell away one by one, each piece an offering of vulnerability and trust. Their bodies pressed together, the heat between them a reflection of their unspoken desires. The room was filled with the sound of their whispers, their breaths coming in sync as they explored each other with a newfound urgency.
Amidst the intensity, there were moments of tenderness—soft touches, lingering kisses, and whispered words of affirmation. The culmination of their journey, both individually and as a couple, had led them to this moment of raw connection.
As the night unfolded, their bodies danced in a rhythm only they could understand. Time seemed to blur, and their shared pleasure became a symphony of sighs and gasps, a testament to their intimacy and the bond they had cultivated.
In the aftermath, as they lay entwined, their breathing gradually slowed, and a sense of contentment settled over them. Jeff’s fingers traced patterns along YN’s skin, and she nestled her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
“You know,” Jeff whispered, his voice a gentle murmur, “tonight wasn’t just about the match. It was about us—our journey together.”
YN looked up at him, her eyes filled with affection. “You’re right. Every moment, every challenge, has led us here.”
As they drifted into sleep, wrapped in each other’s arms, the room was filled with a sense of completion. Their love, their shared victories, and their unbreakable bond had brought them to this place of intimacy and connection. And as they rested, they knew that the journey was far from over, but they were ready to face whatever came their way, united in their love and the strength they found in each other.

Naadam - and how Mongolia celebrates it.
Tumblr media
What is Naadam in Mongolian culture and how would Mr Mongolia celebrate it?
Naadam is a traditional sports festival in Mongolia. It includes Mongols adorning themselves in national dress, mounted soldiers in uniform, music, dancers, and of course, the "Three Manly Sports":
Horse riding, wrestling and archery!
Naadam is a 2000 year old event, however, the term "Naadam" was coined in the 13th century by Chinggis Khaan (according to the secret history of the Mongols) and has been celebrated ever since.
Naadam used to be a preparation/practices/training for war. Competitions such as this would take place just before major battles in order for the war commanders to select which soldiers would be in which division.
Individuals who demonstrated exceptional strength, speed, and flexibility in wrestling, keen eyesight and precise hand-orientation in spear-throwing and archery, and also patience and skill in horse training/horse racing were carefully selected during the competitions.
Naadam takes place around mid-July in the heat of the summer, and is considered one of the biggest and most important festivals in Mongol culture along with Tsaagan Sar.
National Naadam is celebrated in the capital - Ulaanbaatar, in the national sports stadium. However it's not just restricted to the city! It takes place all across the country.
The Naadam festival kicks off with a ceremonial transfer of the symbolic "Nine Banners of the Great Mongol Empire" from the Government House to the Naadam stadium, escorted by honorary guards.
Tumblr media
After a speech by the president or a representative, the games officially commence. In Ulaanbaatar, the capital, the event assumes a grand scale, drawing the most talented wrestlers, horse trainers, and archers from all corners of Mongolia!
As I've previously mentioned, Naadam takes place in the countryside too! In the countryside, herders journey to towns not only to partake in the festivities but also to reunite with friends and relatives, they may not have seen in a while.
Mongolia also has a bit of a reunion - with different Mongolic ethnic groups and other ethnic groups who's people participate in Naadam coming over to visit. Buryat and Uriankhai people are an example, and they (So, Buryat Mongols, Uriankhai/"forest people" as Mongols call them, usually denoting the likes such as Tuvans and Yakuts) have their own archery competitions. It's basically like one big get together!
Wrestling
Mongolian wrestling has no time limit and one objective - avoid touching the ground with anything other than your feet, or else you lose the match.
It also has no weight classes!
The National Wrestling Championship takes place during Naadam , however even before this, there are previous stages.
First is Soum (village) Naadam. Soum Naadam showcases wrestlers from various villages vying for the opportunity to represent their respective villages at the regional level.
Wrestlers who win at the Soum Naadam progress to the Aimag (province) Naadam, where they contend against other wrestlers within their own province to win the opportunity to represent the province.
The ultimate challenge awaits the winner of the Aimag Naadam at the National Naadam in Ulaanbaatar, the grandest and final tournament. Here, the aimag representatives vie for the prestigious title of national champion!

Mongol wrestling painting, 16th century
I definitely think Mr Mongolia is an avid wrestler/quite sporty himself (jock™) however he is a nation and so his nation strength and... Many, many years of experience would mean that it would be unfair for the most part if he went against humans. And besides, he absolutely risks outing himself if he participated in Naadam, especially with how popular wrestling is and uhh, considering the wrestling outfits... The lack of anonymity with that comes with it hahah.
However I think he participates in his own way. I think occasionally he helps with being with being a referee. Another thing: music. During Mongol national wrestling matches, you can often hear someone singing a Mongolian long song in the background. A long song is well, a song, which doesn't actually have a lot of words, but the the words are drawn out by the singer and emphasis is put on reaching impressive notes and putting power and volume in the voice. I think he does musical performances during naadam!
Archery
The Mongols are famous for their archery. There are many different types of Mongol archery.
There's Khalkha Archery, the most practiced one (seeing as the Khalkha Mongols are the majority ethnic group in Mongolia), spanning across a remarkable duration of 48 hours.
Those who triumph in this contest earn the esteemed distinction of the state archery title.
There's also women's archery! As for the women's archery tournament, they display their prowess by releasing 20 arrows towards a 60-meter target, while their male counterparts take aim with 40 arrows at a distance of 75 meters. The target itself comprises a symmetrical arrangement of diminutive leather cylinders, artfully positioned in rows of two and three.
Two red cylinders occupy the center of the target, but hitting them doesn't earn extra points. Each hit on a target gives one point, but merely hitting isn't enough for a score. The target must move a set distance from its starting point to count towards the final score.
Tumblr media
There's also Uriankhai archery and Buryat archery - with Uriankhai archery only being practiced by men, and is practiced by the Uriankhai ethnic groups (this is a name Mongols give to what they consider Northern "forest people" like Tuvans or Yakuts). It has ties to religious ceremonies related to their culture. Buryat archery is practiced by the Buryat minority ethnic group of Mongolia. Both of which take place during the national Naadam festival.
Tumblr media
They even have child archers!
Tumblr media
I definitely think Mongolia is very passionate about archery, and watches the archery competitions intently. I think he helps with setting up the targets and prepping some of the archers when he can. He finds it fascinating to watch them display their skills and techniques with such precision and accuracy - and he wishes he could participate himself! He believes it is a testament to the level of dedication and hard work that athletes put into their craft and loves the satisfaction of the perfect hit - he'll always appreciate a good archer. Further, he puts time aside to go and watch the Buryat and Uriankhai archery with Buryatia and the others as its quite important to them all.
Horse racing
Over a thousand horses gather from all corners of the region to partake in this grand event. Diverging from Western traditions, these races traverse immense distances, spanning a remarkable range of 15 to 30 kilometers. The length of each race is intricately tied to the age of the horses, with the seasoned contenders gallantly competing over the longest stretches.
Tumblr media
Curiously, the jockeys who guide these horses are not seasoned professionals, but rather children as young as 5 years old, with the oldest among them being 13. Yet, it is the horse's prowess that truly determines the outcome, as the race serves as a testament to their remarkable skills.
Age and gender play crucial roles in the classification of horses within the realm of horse racing. For example, in the case of geldings, they are divided into distinct age groups, spanning from 2 years old up to 6 years and older.
The races commence in a distinctive manner. All the horses gather behind a standard-bearer, cross the finish line together, and then follow the guidance of the official rider to reach the starting line.
In each class, the top 5 performers are crowned as "airgiyn tav," and the top three champions proudly claim gold, silver, and bronze medals. People joyfully sing their praises while showering them with fermented mare's milk (airag) on their rump, neck, and cheek.
The victorious jockey ascends to the esteemed title of "tumny ekh," signifying their leadership over a multitude of ten thousand.
Multiple races are showcased during Naadam. Stallions, specifically those known as Azarga, have a race of their own, while geldings partake in a minimum of three races. Further, a special race is organised specifically for pacing horses in Ulaanbaatar.
Remarkably, even the horse that crosses the finish line last in the two-year-old category is bestowed with a special appellation: "bayan khodood," meaning "full stomach." A heartfelt song resonates through the air, expressing good wishes and luck for the humble competitor to emerge triumphant in the following year.
The subject of child-jockeys seem to be somewhat contested amongst Mongols themselves. I'm not going to touch on that debate, however it should be noted that safety measures have been implemented in order to make sure that the race is as smooth as possible, but I understand that this can be a point of controversy. I definitely think Mongolia does his best in making sure the riders are well prepared/equipped for the races to ensure that have the best chances of coming out uninjured/relatively unscathed as possible. I think he puts extra time and care into this aspect of his Naadam participations considerably. He enjoys it to an extent as it reminds him of when he was a very young horse rider, and he does enjoy the celebrations afterwards, however the safety of the riders is at the forefront of his mind.
Other Naadam headcanons:
-Because Mongols usually wear their best clothes to Naadam, Mongolia definitely does too! He has a different outfit planned for each day.
Tumblr media
-He uhh definitely enjoys all the food that's about 🤤 (khuushur, buuz)
Tumblr media
-Probably floods his social media with pictures during this time
-Overall, it's quite an exciting yet busy time for him, he is involved in both the preparations for Naadam and participation in some aspects of Naadam, whilst also making sure to keep socialising with all the people he's invited over! But he manages it well.

I’VE GOT YOUR BACK
Alex León is a well know name in the independent wrestling scene, having earned the nickname The Prophecy of Professional Wrestling. Alex and Seth have been married for three years but never confirmed their relationship with the public so when Baron Corbin started bad mouthing his wife Seth couldn’t hold back, Alex watching from afar realised the true intentions of ‘the sassy southern belle’ and finally found her place in the WWE.
Tumblr media
January 6th 2019 -
Nashville Tennessee
“Thank you Alex! Thank you Alex! Thank you Alex!” Alex León is making her final walk around the ringside applauding, having just dropped the title to Taya Valkyrie in a gruelling match at Impact Wrestling Homecoming.
“An emotional Alex León making her final rounds here at Impact. This women is the definition of what it means to be an Impact Knockouts Champion, she has followed through with her promise and cemented her legacy in this company but she had a Prophecy to for fill somewhere else and we wish her the best of luck!” the commentary team announce.
Many rumours have spread about Alexandria not renewing her contract, having been in the company since 2013 she felt the need for a change.
With tears welling in her eyes, taking one final bow the programme closes with the last walk for Alex León backstage.
————————
Alexandria after taking her leave from Impact has been sending sometime at home, the days have been lonely without her husband and no wrestling as a distraction so like many people social media had taken up the majority of her time.
Pointlessly scrolling through twitter an article catches her attention:
‘Baron Corbin Chooses Lacey Evans As Guest Referee, Monday Night Raw Higlights 06/17/19’
León glances down at her wedding ring with a subtle look of confidence, exiting twitter she opens a contact typing out only one sentence…
I’ve got your back.
———
Wednesday 19th of June 2019
week of Stomping grounds
Stepping out of the car, Alex looks up to meet the deep brown eyes of her husband. A warm hand wraps it’s self around her waist pulling her into a loving embrace.
“Mrs Lopez i have missed you so much.” is the phrase that Alexandria feels rumble in her husbands chest, her bottom lip quivers knowing this reunion is months in the making.
“I can’t do this anymore, the distance i mean. I can’t keep waking up alone in bed. Practically me not working is a problem and i love my job i really do but i can’t keep being so far away from you, i just can’t do it. I need you” Alex let’s out a chocked sob as she repeats the words she had been dwelling on for the duration on the drive.
Instinctively Colby glanced down, his eyes drowning in sympathy, he knows the feeling. Lifting his hand to wipe away a stray tear.
“Stay here then baby, stay with me. I need you too, more then i could ever express in words. Stay here and we can make sure your work is valued for the talent you showcase, i’ll make sure nothing goes wrong” Colby pleads knowing they had to have this conversation, if Lexi retires then the idea would be completely out of the window…
———
Saturday June 23rd 2019
Tacoma Dome - Tacoma, Washington.
Lacey evans stood face to face with a very frustrated Seth Rollins, she had been changing and bending rules in Corbin’s favour and it was obvious it was getting to him. Suddenly Rollins’ face is flying left, she had slapped him!
“omg.. and here’s Baron Corbin trying to take advantage!” Spinning Seth around Baron tried to capitalise on the distraction only to meet a blow to his jaw leaving his slumped on the ropes for support.
“OH! A LOW BLOW BY THE OFFICIAL!”
The beginning beats of ‘Prophecy by Queensryche’ hits the arenas speakers, the crowd arrupts with cheers as a familiar red head charges down the ramp.
“IS IT? IT IS, COREY ITS ALEX LÈON THE FORMER IMAPCT KNOCKOUTS CHAMPION! SHES HERE IN THE WWE!”
“Why is Alex Lèon here? she isn’t part of this match?” Corey announces beside a very happy Renee Young and Micheal Cole.
Sliding into the ring Alex pounces on Lacey Evans throwing combinations of punches and slaps to the blonde.
“ALEX LÈON IS ASSAULTING EVANS, ALEX LÈON IS TAKING OUT THE OFFICIAL! ITS NO DISQUALIFICATION, ALEX CAN DO WHATEVER THE HELL SHE WANTS TO DO!”
Alex and Lacey take the brawl outside of the ring, the sassy southern belle is sprawled out on the floor after being in the receiving end of a ‘final chapter’ (an exploder suplex) when officials and security try to tear Lèon from Evans.
Whilst in the firm grip of many security men, Alexandria looks though the ropes to see her husband of three years reverse an ‘end of days’ to hit a stomp.
1. 2. 3.
“SETH ROLLINS RETAINS WITH THE HELP OF A DEBUTING ALEX LÈON! WHAT A MOMENT!”
The wife joins her husband in the ring, raising his arm in victory. Seth couldn’t wait any longer, wrapping his arms around her waist he lifts his spouse into the air placing a delicate kiss on her lips. Whispers can be seen being shared between the couple as the crowd explodes with cheers.
“you did good baby, you did so good”
“Sweetheart, i told you i got you’re back.”

The Ring General: Reigning after Roman.
Tumblr media
Gunther's journey as the Intercontinental Champion is now etched in the history books, securing him the esteemed title of 'longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time.' Yet, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, paving the way for even greater achievements. But how do you book the end of such an epic run without harming the dominance and significance of this championship reign? Gunther has ran through the majority of the superstars the WWE roster has to offer, so let’s explore a path for Gunther to ascend to the pinnacle of the wrestling world, cementing his legacy as a world title holder.
With a reign nearing 500 days (at the time of writing), Gunther undeniably deserves a shot at the top title. His longevity as Intercontinental Champion gives him a claim superior to many on the roster. In a previous blog post, I explored why I’m backing Shinsuke Nakamura to take the World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins but, as a future feud, Gunther doesn’t seem the right fit here. Shinsuke would be a fresh champion with his own reign to cement and whilst I love a villain vs villain clash, this one doesn’t seem fitting.
Doesn’t Roman Reigns vs Gunther for the WWE Universal Championship at Wrestlemania XL (2024) sound appropriate for the longest reigning IC champion of all time? Champion vs Champion? Tribal Chief vs Ring General? Now that’s a Wrestlemania main event.
With Roman currently taking a break, WWE has some time to manipulate the moving parts in this potential matchup. Maybe they could continue to add fuel to the fire of the Giovanni Vinci storyline and identify Vinci as a pivotal figure in Gunther's journey moving forward. The Triple H era has seen the re-emergence of faction-based storytelling but, recently, every faction seems to be experiencing turbulence. Imperium should be portrayed as an impenetrable fortress, a united force that remains dominant and cohesive. Amidst the descent in the other factions on television, Imperium should stand tall, keeping their internal conflicts off-screen and projecting an aura of strength. At Wrestlemania, Vinci could have the opportunity to prove his loyalty to Gunther and Imperium and play a crucial role in Gunther emerging victorious, further solidifying their alliance. Perhaps intercepting a Solo Sikoa run in? Or perhaps putting himself in the path of a superman punch?
To prevent another instance of a champion holding multiple belts, Gunther should make a significant announcement. Given the lack of formidable contenders for his Intercontinental Championship, he was forced to explore new horizons. Gunther will be relinquishing the IC belt to focus on establishing a historic reign with the Universal Championship.
The future of the IC title could be determined by a tournament that features hungry and determined competitors. This not only showcases the talented WWE roster but also ensures that the next champion feels like they have truly earnt their place. This could be a great time to showcase all the talent that have come up short against Gunther but who still remain worthy contenders, roster members who deserve title shots but have been overlooked and perhaps even some hungry NXT stars.
Now, picture this: Gunther, seated at ringside in a sharp suit, proudly draping the Universal Championship over his shoulder. The Intercontinental Championship sits on a silk-covered platform, flanked by Ludwig and Giovanni. The tournament unfolds each week, with Imperium observing, analysing, and critiquing the suitability of the competitors.
For the brackets, after much consideration—taking into account Sheamus's injury and other superstars tied up in different storylines—I settled on a mix of suitable contenders. When it comes to showcasing NXT stars, while Ilja is a personal favourite, Carmelo Hayes or Bron Breakker would also shine in this spotlight.
Tumblr media
As for the winner, recognizing that LA Knight is a huge fan favourite, my vision for the IC title aligns more with Drew McIntyre. It presents Drew with a well deserved opportunity for a dominant championship run playing out in front of real life crowds.
The legacy of Gunther's historic Intercontinental Championship reign will undoubtedly leave an enduring mark on the sport, setting the tone for an exciting new era and setting the stage for another unforgettable chapter in WWE history.
With pins, submissions, and a whole lot of heart, Chloe xoxo

AEW Full Gear 2023... puzzles of mismatched pieces?
There are few things that are inevitable in life: Death, Taxes, and the Internet Wrestling Twitter bitching about wrestling.
Last night was AEW’s Full Gear PPV. While some spent it in the comfort of their own home, struggling with the BR Live app, I went to a wrestling viewing party with a handful of friends to watch. We typically go to the movie theater to view AEW PPV but we combined friendsgiving so here we were. (I highly suggest viewing a PPV in a theater at least once)
The best part of a viewing party is the friends part. This requires you to have friends, which I definitely recommend some of you get some friends (and some deodorant), YOU NERD.
*** cue the laugh track ***
All jokes aside, I felt it was important to be IN THE MOMENT with my friends. I love viewing parties with friends. These friends can be of all different levels of knowledge and experience with wrestling. Some have been wrestlers themselves.
My fiance, who has been watching wrestling since the 80s/90s was sitting next to someone who had never watched a wrestling program in their life last night. The varied levels of knowledge and experience made the viewing party exciting. While I am usually sucked into my phone watching my twitter feed, it felt necessary to experience it with my friends.
Here is what I experienced, from memory, complete with quotes and inner thoughts of a person on the spectrum. ENJOY.

I won’t be talking about the pre show as much because we arrived late. I know. There was traffic and I was cooking Buffalo Chicken Dip. I heard Eddie Kingston won and the preshow was very exciting. I love that for them.
The main show started with the six-man tag team match of Darby Allin, Sting, & Adam Copeland versus The Patriary. The lights went up… and there are children in turtlenecks being forced to acapella sing Christian Cage’s theme…. Were these fatherless children? Should we be supporting them monetarily? That’s when I heard one of the friends at the party who has never watched the wrestling show go
MR CHOW DOES NOT APPROVE!
(Celebrity sightings literally doing their job here.)
I think Entrances (and I mean to capitalize it) are very special for the casual as well as the expert viewer. They are special, they showcase the wrestlers creativity, and are also COOL AS FUCK.
OH LOOk, STEVE-O!
Hearing the crowd sing “Metalingus” after the music cut is where I started to cry. This match is a special moment and rightfully so to start the show. This is Sting’s last time wrestling in the state of California. He announced his retirement from in-ring activity at AEW Revolution in 2024, five months from now. While I mourn the ending of Sting’s wrestling career, I need reminding that this man is 64 years old WRESTLING ACTIVELY week after week. He deserves the time off and time away. We learn at the end of this match that Sting’s son is ringside which is truly special.
Something I love about AEW PPV is that each show gives you a match style and type for everyone. You like tag matches full of story and emotion, watch the six-man tag team match that starts the show. You want a match stipulation you know will be violent? Stay tuned because we have a Texas Deathmatch to enjoy. You love watching OSHA Violation videos? We have a four-way ladder match to fill that void. Wrestling is truly FOR everyone.
Opening with the six-man tag match full of layers upon layers of storytelling was a great starting point for this PPV. There is the layer of Sting’s last match in California, second to the last big PPV for Sting. There is the layer of Darby being betrayed by his mentee Nick Wayne, whom he trained at his father’s wrestling academy when he was just starting out. You have the layer of Christian Cage and Adam Copeland, real life friends and seven-time tag team champions, on opposite sides of the ring. You have Luchasaurus, trapped under the spell of Christian Cage’s spell. And then for some reason, Ric Flair is here… because everyone loves a good nostalgia pop.
And layers like an onion, this match started with tears and ended in tears.
After back and forth, in and out of the ring, Christian Cage showed how cowardly he was… The Patriary lost as Adam Copeland covered Luchasaurus for the 1-2-3!
The next segment of this show happened to be Tony Schiavone, the National Treasure, announcing that MJF could not compete in tonight’s main event for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. As Tony was announcing everyone’s worst nightmare, Adam Cole’s music hit… and on crutches, he hobbled to fight in MJF’s place. This brochacho-ship… an unlikely friendship… has truly captured the viewers hearts, a bromance to last a lifetime. This main event match should be an easy win for Jay White, but we’ll talk about that in due time.
The AEW International Championship match is next, Orange Cassidy, accompanied by Hook, defending against the FORMER champion who is out for Blood, Jon Moxley. The promo segment beforehand had Mox’s wife, Renee, say he will do ANYTHING to get that championship and no one will stand in his way.
I turned to my fiance and said, if I ever acted like this to PLEASE stand in my way. He laughed… Am I the Jon Moxley of my relationship? Will I risk it all, concussion and all, for what I want and thirst for the taste of another man’s blood?  Honestly, I can see it… but I digress…
The match started with Moxley exploding with energy to gain the advantage over the casual Orange Cassidy. The friends who had never watched wrestling recognize Orange Cassidy from the show “The Floor is Lava” which everyone should watch as well. The brutality juxtaposed to Moxley’s brutality may seem like dirty mismatched socks… but this match truly brought out the intensity and focus each wrestler initially lacked. The usual feral nature of Moxley seemed focused tonight while Orange’s demeanor seemed to be far more serious and violent. Between suicide drives to the ring announcers desk to scratching backs & biting noses, the play by play of this match told the story of changed men willing to do anything for a championship. This championship means something to both men… and with the title of international means either men could defend this championship ANYWHERE to further their dominance.
The friends in the room who participated in the predictions chatted back and forth on who would win this match. With the NJPW WrestleKingdom, their Wrestlemania, on the horizon, my friends argued that Moxley would win as to take this title to Japan and defend it there, a place he’s been before. However, I argued that Orange has been showing a more focused intense side of him we’ve only begun to see.
Moxley’s fighting like he’s the final boss… and Orange, after FIVE Orange Punches, finally brought the monster to his knees. After the three count, and still your AEW International Champion, Orange Cassidy.

This show fifty minutes in this PPV, has started off with thunder and lightning. Full Gear has been the event to sign off the wrestling year. It’s the final test, the crossed T’s and dotted I’s… this event has been known for title changes, surprise debuts, and unforgettable moments.
Timeless Toni Storm’s music hits… and the screen goes to black and white.
This match up is between Hikaru Shida, a three time AEW Women’s Champion,  versus Timeless Toni Storm, a two time AEW Women’s Champion. Both women have trained in Japan. Both women have gone through changes and progressions throughout the years. Toni Storm a 28 year old NewZealander faces Hikaru Shida, a 35 year old Japanese wrestler. Both women started wrestling at the end of the 2000s. Both women are from each other’s Roman Empire. (photo credit: AEW)

This character for Toni Storm has been my favorite. She combines that old Hollywood charm, the looks of Marilyn Monroe with the psychosis of Joan Crowford. The smeared lipstick, the dramatic robe, all the way down to the tray where she places her golden shoe. This is the same shoe she uses behind the referee’s back to take down her opponent. She truly is a star.
The match is a war of blows. Toni Storm emptied her arsenal and couldn’t get the advantage over Shida. Shida emptied her arsenal as well but came up short. What would it take to end this battle of forces? Well, a steel plate aptly placed on the hip of Toni Storm is what would end this battle crowning Timeless Toni Storm a three-time AEW Women’s World Champion.
I really enjoy how new signee Maria Mae has interwoven herself into this storyline. This just makes me excited to see this admiration-ship of Maria with Toni unfold week after week, which is a different tone from a few months ago with the AEW Women’s Championship scene.
Here we are… the AEW World Tag Team Championship Ladder match. Four teams participated in this tag team match. The moment the bell rang, everyone squared up, including the big meaty men. I am simply a human who lusts after big wrestling meaty men slapping meat.
La Facción Ingobernable are high risk, high reward wrestlers willing to put their bodies into the match. FTR, in the last two years with AEW< has proven they are all fists no flips in their search for gold once again. The House of the Dark recently dropped the trio's titles and have shown no mercy to their opponents. These opponents would not make this first title defense on a PPV easy for Rikcy and Big Bill.
“Why are there ladders in this match? They have to climb those to get the ....”
“Yeah, they have to climb it to get the belts. That’s how they win.” “Why are there different size ladders?” “They need options.” :”Okay, but why are there so many? Isn’t that setting them up?” “Exactly” *looks nervous* “Okay….”
Watch a ladder match with a new wrestling fan. It feels special again, I promise.
I am a gimmick girlie, as they say. Anyone can be a gimmick girlie. I bet you are a gimmick girlie. You like a stipulation, an elevation, upping the stakes kind-of-thing. I bet you do… and if you don’t, I think you’re lying. Have you ever said, “It’s so easy, I can do this with my eyes closed?” Well, most people aren’t usually referring to defending their title belts in a wrestling match, something that would be actually VERY HARD and more DANGEROUS given most of us aren’t trained wrestlers. Well, Ricky and Big Bill have solidified they can defend their new titles anywhere… and to up the stakes, they can *metaphorically* do it with their eyes closed. (OH GOD, WE ARE NOT DOING A BLINDFOLD MATCH… no matter how loud your TNA chants are….)
This ladder match had so much going on, I had to watch it THREE TIMES. No joke, something new popped up in this match every time. The crowd is heavily behind Rush. He’s been a highlight of AEW’s saturday night “Collision” programming… Yet, overwhelmingly, in the middle of the match, “MEAT!” chants are overpowering as Big Bill, who stands at almost 7 feet tall, goes toe to toe with Brodie King, who stands at a slightly smaller six feet five inches. These boys are big meaty sons of bitches.
Every wrestler in each team was insanely over in this match. And each wrestler would have been fined by OSHA for how they all used ladders as weapons. There was a sequence between Cash Wheeler and Maliki Black used a ladder leading against the top rope as a slingshot against a moving Cash Wheeler as he bounced off the ladder and into the floor… which precariously transitioned into a piledriver on another ladder leading into the corner square on his head. The crowd cheered “HOLY SHIT!” (you'll see what I mean here)
The ending of this ladder match saw every wrestler on one side of a ladder, three in a row, fighting to get to the title belts above. This match felt like a BIG DEAL. It felt important. And the weighted cost of each move, each bump, each impact was felt in every fan watching on. Ladder matches are for everyone. If you don’t agree… you are a liar.  (Photo credit: AEW)

I haven’t seen enough love for this ladder match so please go back, watch it if you can… better yet, play it on a loop at my funeral and invite everybody.
We transitioned into the AEW TBS Championship three way match between the champion Kris Statlander, Julia Hart, and SKye Blue. In the last few months, both Julia Hart and Skye Blue have had more character and in-ring development than I have seen of any other women’s wrestler. Julia Hart, once a bubbly cheerleader valeting for the Varsity Blondes, now channeled into her spooky bitch era. She’s focused with a killer moonsault. Skye Blue has blossomed into a spunky yet moody wrestler. “She might be Skye Blue but the skies are certainly in for a storm.”
Kris Statlander out wrestles, outweighs, and could bench BOTH Julia and Skye on her shoulders. Yet, the three of these women put on one hell of a showdown. Nearfall after nearfall, each woman unloaded everything they had. There was a great moment where Kris and Julia were on the outside of the ring. Kris baited Julia to bring it, but Julia got sucked into the most gnarly powerslam. Kris’ power is absolutely unmatched here but Julia and Skye have to use her power SOMEHOW against her. While Julia had Skye in a submission hold, Kris picked up Julia from the ground into a German suplex.
She did this FOUR times in a row with Julia and Skye.
As Kris landed a piledriver on Skye, Julia came in with a closeline, picking up the scraps… and stole the victory. Julia Hart became the youngest champion in AEW at the age of 22.  (photo credit: AEW)

I really enjoy the hype over the new AEW Signing. It felt very important for AEW as a company. After the firing of CM Punk, many online voices have voiced their concerns on AEW being a comparable alternative to the mainstream WWE. It’s important to remember that AEW is not going to be LIKE or the same flavor as WWE. They are there to provide the alternative. They exist to showcase all different types of wrestling and wrestlers. That is important. While some could describe it as bad patchwork, I feel this promotion is more like those pictures that, as a whole, is one image… but are composed of a bunch of little images. As we slide right into the next match, I want to preface that this match could be its own article. It stands alone as a masterpiece. It is the blueprint for all deathmatches in AEW Hall of Fame. (There isn’t one, but there should be… it’s been three years already.) Texas Deathmatch existed long before November 18th, 2023. A little google search could not confirm the origin of the wrestling Deathmatch (capital D!). However, the 1980s really captured the Deathmatch art in Abdullah the Butcher, The Sheik, Atsushi Onita, and Terry Funk. These wrestlers match after match put their whole bodies on the line in the name of violence. (There is a whole episode of Dark Side of the Ring about FMW where Onita started these Deathmatches…. Absolutely brutal)
AEW has had a few Texas Deathmatches since its inception. The first AEW Texas Deathmatch was July 21st, 2021 with Lance Archer vs. Jon Moxley. The two had fought previously in a Texas Deathmatch at Wrestle Kingdom 14 where Moxley defeated Archer. The last two Texas Deathmatches have involved “Hangman” Adam Page, one against Adam Cole in 2022 and one against Jon Moxley in 2023. With two Texas Deathmatches under his belt but a loss at Wrestledream against Swerve, “Hangman” already had a taste for brutality. So, in the middle of Swerve asking the audience WHOSE HOUSE it was, Adam Page attacked him before the bell rang.
(Also, side note, it is surreal hearing an arena with 13k fans chant “SWERVE HOUSE” after hearing a room of a few hundred chant it not a few years back… Simply wild.)
The story between “Hangman” and Swerve is personal. This feud has changed both wrestlers, and especially after this match, it has changed both men to their core.
Weapons, in this match, come out early as “Hangman” initiates with duct taping Swerve’s wrists and using an industrial stapler on his chest. Staple after staple into Swerve, the crowd gasps at the flood dripping from Swerve as “Hangman” staples his son’s artwork onto Swerve’s face… and then drops the blood off Swerve’s INTO HIS MOUTH. Hangman spits into the sky as the crowd chants “YOU SICK FUCK.”
Deathmatches are for SICK FUCKS. And Hangman? He’s won TWO of them.
The continued staples, chairs, barbed wire plywood boards (even a piece of barbed wire that clips Hangman's lip from above) unlock brutality needed in this personal feud. Both of these men showcase how they will do anything to settle the match in their favor, a true fight vs. flight scenario. These men are not scared to face their demons… but only one can be victorious tonight. (photo: AEW)
Tumblr media
I believe this is one of the bloodiest matches I’ve seen in AEW. The bright red blood flowing down Swerve’s forehead… to Hangman’s crimson blood congealing into his hair like a gelatin.
It was believable, credible, and a candidate for Match of the Year. This was real to me, damnnit.
The camera with blood splattered on the lens. The ring canvas dripped with these men’s blood like an art piece you’d hang in your house.
The image of Swerve dumping glass on the back of Hangman, climbing to the top rope, doing a 450 splash, and then a JML Driver (thanks Excalibur) will live rent free in my mind. I see it when my eyes are closed. (photo: AEW)
Tumblr media
This match was a masterpiece. And Swerve coming up on top, the look to the crowd, this was magic. If you got to see this live in person, I am incredibly jealous of you.
The show could have stopped there. I honestly forgot about the last two matches left on the card. I could have done without the next match.
I wish I was more invested as Kenny Omega is one of my favorite wrestlers.
Alas, the Texas Deathmatch was such an emotional high that dropped the moment this match came on. Was this match on its own great? Sure! Kenny, Matt, Nick, and Jericho could wrestle a paper bag and it’d be great. I just wasn’t as interested until the last 3 minutes of the match. Kenny pinning Matt was absolutely the right call and having the Bucks continue their little tantrums added to the story. I just want Kenny out of a Jericho angle. That’s all.
The main event seems to be where the discourse lies. It is the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. I get it. However, the story they are telling really mirrored what they were telling at All In just a few months ago. Jay White thought he had it in the bag facing Adam Cole, still recovering from surgery… with MJF out of action and a crippled Adam Cole, he should have been able to win the triple B…. but he just wasn’t able to beat him.
MJF risked a FELONY to defend the title he rightfully won.
Once MJF entered the match, Jay White singled out his hurt leg. That would be the logical thing to do, find the area of weakness and get your opponent off their feet.
Every time Jay White did something to get the advantage, MJF did squeeze his way out of the situation. MJF was taking risks he hadn't taken before in a match. Defending his title with such a difficult injury put MJF task, so to speak. He had less of an advantage than starting the match healthy. In my opinion, having the AEW World Heavyweight Champion ALSO holding the ROH World Tag Team Championships seems to cheapen the AEW World Heavyweight Championship's prestigious nature. It’s not that I think the champion should not defend the title but it puts the champion at a disadvantage so his competitors don’t have the option they should get to a fair fight with MJF. If I am going to fight and become the new champion, I want to prove I don’t need to win by taking advantage of an injured wrestler. To me, that cheapens the match for me.
This match did nothing but just make MJF look risky working hurt, and in kayfabe, putting other wrestlers at risk by not being 100% healthy. Jay White (and Bullet Club Gold) looked silly and weak, not being able to capitalize on an injured wrestler. And MJF had to rely on the diamond ring once again to take the advantage.
I get that they are telling a story. Maybe that is the point… MJF is SO strong that he could not merely be taken down like a regular man. No, he is superior. He is our scumbag.  (photo: AEW)

Whatever the case, not seeing a final shot or even reference to the Devil seemed like… incomplete. The last two matches are fine on their own but seem a little misplaced in such a great show. Full Gear 2023 lived up to the hype promised yet… I’m waiting for the metaphorical fat lady to sing. I am waiting for the final number. I am waiting to finish… and feel a little… regular. The ending was just… regular. And that kind of sucks after such a great show with a Match of the Year candidate of Swerve vs. Hangman. But that’s the beauty of an opinion… the beauty of having likes and dislikes. That’s the beauty of the alternative. Each match doesn’t have to complete the set to be worthwhile. Many of those matches in Full Gear 2023 PPV can be their own hit single… performing better than the main event. That is alright. I liked it.
But, I felt like it was a show full of great puzzle pieces that seemed to not fit in the order presented… all great storylines, great talent, great momentum… they just, didn’t come out with a crystal clear picture needed to be a Show of the Year contender. What did you think of Full Gear 2023? Did it live up to the hype or did you feel it fall out of sync?  Let me know!
I love you. You’re wonderful.

You always saw the movies and read the books about two friends finally realizing their feelings for one another and eventually confessing their love for one another and living happily ever after. You always loved that troupe and wanted that same thing. Finding a love like that to be so sweet and pure.
The unrequited love troupe always scared you. You knew that was not what you wanted, and it terrified you to think it could happen, especially since you found yourself developing feeling for your best friend, Wheeler Yuta.
You can't pinpoint the exact moment you realized your feelings for him. It was one of those unexpected things; sure, you always loved him, but when did friendship love you felt for him turn into romantic love?
It was typical day for you, working on your latest design for your gear and merchandise. You enjoyed designing almost as much as wrestling and you always told yourself that, whenever it was time to step away from wrestling, you would look into joining the design team so your creativity could be properly showcased.
"Hey... you're not too busy are you?" A familiar male voice timidly asked, noticing the notebook and colored pencils in front of you on the table.
You smiled, looking up and seeing Wheeler standing there, patiently waiting and hoping this wasn't a bad time. He just had to talk to you — it couldn't wait.
"I'm never too busy for you, Yoots. What's up?" You asked, concern laced in your voice. It wasn't like him to be this nervous; it must be something serious. You set your colored pencil down and paused your music you had quietly coming through the speaker. He had your undivided attention now. "Wanna talk somewhere more private?" You offered.
"That would be great actually. Thanks." The nervousness in his voice not as evident now. You gathered up your things, and the two of you walked side by side in silence to an empty hallway almost on the other side of the arena. Your heart was beating loudly in your chest, so much so that you could have swore Wheeler could hear it too. So many thoughts were running through your head: What was he about to say? Was something seriously wrong? He's usually more playful and confident.
The pair of you came to stop about halfway down the hallway. After double checking that you’re alone, you look up and find Wheeler running his hand through his hair. “Are you okay? Is something wrong?” You couldn’t help but bombard him with questions, you were worried.
“I just…. I don’t know why, but I’m nervous about this rematch with Daniel Garcia. What if he actually beats me this time? What if he does what he failed to do the first time and take my title?” He vents, referencing to the ROH Pure Championship that he takes so much pride in.
You weren’t sure where this uncertainty was coming from. Once Wheeler joined the Blackpool Combat Club, he had a boost in confidence and this nervousness and anxiousness was never this bad, usually just lingered for a few minutes then was gone after a pep talk from William Regal. The fact that Wheeler came to you told you he needed more reassurance that it would all work out in the end. This reminded you of when he lost to Chris Jericho; he came to you before for not just a pep talk but for reassurance. You remember he took that loss hard. You also remember helping him get over it and get back to being the wrestler and champion everyone knew he was.
“Hey… look at me,” you gently speak. Wheeler obeys, his dark brown eyes full of worry and anxiety. “You’ve beat Garcia once before; who says you can’t do it again? Everyone believes in you. I believe in you; always have and always will. If you do lose to Danny, I’ll be here, so will the fans. You’ve proven time and time again you have more than what it takes to be a huge star. You’re champion material, Yoots!” You beam before continuing. “I’ll be here regardless of the outcome. You can’t get rid of me that easy.” You tease, nudging him with your elbow. “It’s all going to be fine.” You reassured him, gently pulling him into a hug. You could feel the tension begin to melt away from his shoulders, his body slowing relaxing in your embrace.
You didn’t realize just how long you held Wheeler, arms still wrapped around him. You honestly didn’t care because he needed this, and you weren’t about to end this hug before he was ready. You got lost in the comfort and warmth of his strong arms, your feelings for him intensified, and you knew you’d have to eventually pour your heart out.
You felt Wheeler move in your arms, retracting himself from the embrace. “Thanks. I really needed that.” Wheeler smiles, eyes shining bright as he looks at you. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” He jokes, smile still plastered on his face.
“Be helplessly lost.” You joked back, laughing. Wheeler laughs with you, knowing you’re probably right. You help keep things in order, always looking out for him, and he does the same for you. Truthfully, you’d both be lost without one another which is why you’re scared to death that your confession will ruin everything.
“I’ve got to get going. Thanks for the talk. You always make me feel better.” Wheeler tells you, smiling before leaving you alone with your thoughts and feelings for him.
You push all that aside, heading to get changed for the show. Making your way to the locker room, you attempt to focus on your upcoming match with Penelope Ford. You were excited about because not only will you be testing yourself against Penny and the recently returned Kip Sabian, who will be lurking ringside, but you’ll also be debuting new gear you designed. You took inspiration from the changing seasons — from summer to fall. You were beyond happy with the way it turned out and couldn’t wait to show it off to your friends, co-workers, and the fans. You felt like a million bucks, a smile never leaving your face once you slipped into your latest creation.
Your match with Penelope was the opening match. Contrary to popular belief, you loved having the opening match, not because you get to go first and then enjoy the show, but because to you, it meant that you were trusted enough to start the show, to set the tone for the remainder of the show. You considered that a huge honor.
You were waiting for your cue, and once it came, you did your signature entrance as you made your way to the ring. You locked eyes with Penny before shooting Kip a glance. The look in Kip’s eye told you he wasn’t going to let you best his wife. You’ve been in this position before so it didn’t bother you one bit. You quickly set your sights on Penelope once again. The referee signaled for the bell, and Penelope was quick to get in some forearm shots.
The match was hard for you thanks to Kip grabbing your leg when you got too close to the ropes and jumping up on the apron causing a distraction therefore letting Penny get in some cheap shots and ultimately, the upper hand all throughout the match.
You managed to hit a DDT followed by a spear, getting you back on top. You were able to counter all of Penelope’s submission attempts with some of your own. You almost got the better of her a few times and the same could be said for Penelope. You both were growing tired and ready to end this once and for all. While Penny was pandering to the crowd, you got her in a crucifix and managed to get the three count.
You knew Penelope would be pissed off and so would Kip, most likely to attack you for winning so you were quick to roll out of the ring where your hand was raised in victory. The crowd loved it. They loved you and you could fight the smile on your face. You quickly exited through the tunnel as Kip and Penelope were furiously yelling at the poor referee.
You were greeted with praise backstage as well as compliments on your new gear as you headed to take a quick shower and change to watch the remainder of the show. You were thrilled people enjoyed your match and noticed your new ring attire. You worked hard on both, many late nights and early mornings spent doodling ideas and hitting the gym. You looked around for Wheeler but had no luck in spotting him amongst the small group; you were sad and disappointed he wasn’t there, but you reminded yourself about his match with Daniel, maybe he was getting ready. That made you fell a little better.
Finally reaching the showers with your essentials, you make sure you’re nice and clean despite the short shower before slipping into some comfortable clothes and drying your hair then moving on to finish your bathroom routine. You exited the room and dropped your things into your bag then headed to the closest monitor for the rest of the show.
You caught yourself looking for Wheeler once again, only to be met with the same result as earlier. You shook your head in an attempt to rid yourself of those thoughts. Tonight. You had to tell him tonight regardless of the outcome of his match. You just couldn’t keep doing this, biting your tongue during every conversation, refusing to let the words make themselves known to your best friend.
It was time for Wheeler’s match, and even thought you gave him that pep talk earlier, you were nervous. You saw how his match with Daniel went last time, and you knew this time would be more intense. You watched as both men made their entrances to the ring, how they looked at one another. You sucked in a deep breath as the bell rang.
Despite being nervous, you loved watching Wheeler and Daniel wrestle each other, always hard hitting and kept you on the edge of your seat. You quietly cheered for best friend. “Come on, Yoots. Just like last time.” You whispered to yourself, watching the screen intently and jumping when a hand landed on your shoulder. Your head snapped up to see Bryan Danielson, standing slightly behind you. “You almost gave me a heart attack!” You exclaimed, clutching you chest then smacking him in the stomach you recovered.
Bryan just grins, pleased with his sneakiness. “Just wanted to get a better look at this match.” He shrugged. “Plus, I’m heading out there when it’s over.” He continued, looking from you to the monitor.
“Are you going to try getting through to Garcia again?” You asked, your curiosity piqued. You glanced up at Bryan, who was focused on the two men putting on another classic yet again.
You waited for his reply, but it never came. You were so in your thoughts you missed the ending of the match, whipping your head back to the screen you see Danny with his hand raised. You were bummed for Wheeler. You knew how much he loved having that title.
You watched as Bryan put the Pure Championship on Danny, how Wheeler reacted. You knew you needed to be at the tunnel when he comes through so you made a beeline in that direction, not caring what you were missing out in the ring.
You waited as he finally made his way through the tunnel. His eyes met yours and a quick, silent conversation was all that was needed. You fell in step with Wheeler as the two of you mindlessly found the locker rooms. “Want me to wait here?” You gently ask, afraid to upset him somehow. All he gave you was nod before slipping into the locker room.
Once Wheeler was done changing, you both headed to the empty, secluded hallway where you gave him that pep talk. “Wanna talk about it?” You cautiously, reach out to place a hand on his back.
He shakes his head, hands running over his face, clearly upset at the turn of events and not knowing what comes next is stressful. You silently step forward and wrap your arms around him. It might not fix anything, but you hope it will at least help him relax a little. A moment later you felt his arms wrap around you, returning your embrace. You took in the smell of his cologne — one of your favorite scents — and close your eyes, savoring the moment and warmth of your best friend’s embrace.
You wanted to say something about what happened out there in the ring but nothing felt right given the moment. Just when you thought Wheeler was letting you go, he tightened his arms around you, not enough to hinder your breathing but enough to reassure himself that you were still there. You didn’t want this to end and you were glad it didn’t.
A few more moments passed before you both reluctantly pulled away, catching each other’s eye in the process. Your heart was beating so fast you just knew it was going to fall right out of your chest. This was your chance — you were going to tell him because surely he felt something between you two during that hug. He had to have. That sweet and wonderful hug lingered much too long for ‘just friends’ in your opinion.
“I need to tell you something.” You both spoke at the exact same time, sending the pair of you into a fit of laughter.
After you both calmed down, Wheeler gestured for you to go first. You nodded and took a deep breath before speaking. “I… I like you, and I don’t just mean as a friend. I think — no, I know — I’m falling in love with you. I don’t know when it started but it did and I couldn’t hold it in any longer. As much as unrequited love terrifies me, I’m willing to risk it because it’s worth it. You’re worth it. I know it’s unexpected but —” Your rambling was cut off by a kiss, a soft, sweet, and gentle kiss.
“I love you too. Always have.” Wheeler whispered, his lips mere centimeters from yours. He places one more tender kiss to your lips. “Funny enough, I was actually going to confess the same thing.” He chuckled, smile wide and eyes twinkling in the light of the hallway.
You were stunned. He really did feel the same! You were going to get that friends to lovers love that you always dreamed of. You couldn’t believe it! This had to be a dream. You didn’t think this would ever happen to you, but clearly you were wrong.
You couldn’t say anything, all you could do was kiss him again. This time the kiss wasn’t timid, more passionate and sure, bold even. You wrapped your arms around his neck, his hands resting on your waist. The kiss felt like it lasted for hours, but in reality it only lasted a few minutes; you could really feel the love between you two, finding it hard not to smile.
You pulled your head back just enough to mumble an ‘I love you’ against Wheeler’s lips before going in for one more kiss. This time it was Wheeler who broke the kiss. “Loosing the title to Garcia made me realize just how empty I felt, even though I knew I had you as a friend — my best friend —, but I couldn’t keep pretending I didn’t like you — love you even.” Wheeler confessed, eyes never leaving yours. You could see just how real and honest and genuine he was being.
“One day, a few months ago, I noticed how I couldn’t quit thinking about you, how I would keep picturing us doing those cute things they do in movies. I was too scared to say anything then. I couldn’t handle it if you didn’t feel the same, guess I was worried about nothing after all.” You lightly laughed. The longer you kept your eyes on Wheeler’s the more you got lost in them.
“Wanna have that first date now?” Wheeler grinned as he offered you his arm.
You laughed, looping your arm with his. “I would love that, Yoots.” You finally were going to get your friends to lovers love story after all, and you were over the moon.

The American Nightmare Awakens: Cody Rhodes Dethrones Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40
WrestleMania 40 witnessed a monumental shift in the WWE landscape as Cody Rhodes, the returning "American Nightmare," defeated Roman Reigns in a dramatic main event to capture the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. This victory marked the end of Reigns' historic reign, which had stretched for a staggering 1316 days.
The main event, contested under the ambiguous "Bloodline Rules" stipulation, promised chaos from the outset. The anticipation crackled in the air as Rhodes, returning from injury after his emotional defeat to Reigns at WrestleMania 39, challenged the seemingly invincible "Tribal Chief."
The early moments showcased the raw intensity of the contest. Rhodes, fueled by a year of determination, matched Reigns blow for blow. Their technical prowess and signature moves kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. It was a clash of titans, a battle between a hungry challenger and a dominant champion.
However, the true drama unfolded as the match progressed. The Usos, ever-present members of Reigns' Bloodline, attempted to interfere on multiple occasions. Jey Uso, seemingly conflicted, showed hesitation, while Jimmy Uso's attempts were thwarted by a resilient Rhodes.
The surprise factor arrived when a returning Seth Rollins, clad in his Shield gear, stormed the ring to a thunderous ovation. He neutralized the Usos, momentarily evening the odds for Rhodes. This unexpected turn of events sent the crowd into a frenzy, adding a layer of nostalgia and intrigue to the already captivating encounter.
Just when it seemed Rhodes might overcome the odds, The Rock, a longtime ally-turned-rival of Reigns, emerged.  The tension between the two was palpable as they brawled outside the ring, reminiscent of their epic encounters of the past. However, the chaos didn't end there.
From the darkness, the legendary Undertaker made a shocking entrance, his signature entrance theme sending shivers down the spines of fans. He locked eyes with The Rock, a callback to their unforgettable battles, before delivering a thunderous Chokeslam to the "Great One." This moment, a culmination of years of speculation, erupted the crowd into a state of disbelief.
With the ring cleared of distractions, Rhodes and Reigns returned to their personal battle. The exhaustion from the earlier mayhem was evident, but their determination remained unwavering.  Rhodes, drawing on his unwavering spirit, landed a picture-perfect Cross Rhodes on Reigns, followed by another for good measure. The referee's three-count confirmed the unthinkable – Cody Rhodes was the new Undisputed WWE Champion.
The aftermath was pure emotion. Tears welled up in Rhodes' eyes as the magnitude of his accomplishment sunk in. He celebrated with his wife and mother in the ring, the culmination of a long and arduous journey.  The WWE Universe erupted, a wave of jubilation washing over the stadium.
This victory signifies a new era in WWE.  The iron grip of Roman Reigns' reign has loosened, paving the way for fresh rivalries and storylines. With the championship around his waist, Cody Rhodes stands as a beacon of hope, a symbol of perseverance and resilience.
Questions swirl around the future. Who will challenge Rhodes for the coveted title? How will he navigate the treacherous landscape of professional wrestling? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the WWE Universe is buzzing with excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead.
Cody Rhodes' victory at WrestleMania 40 wasn't just a championship win; it was a moment of catharsis for the fans and a testament to the enduring power of dreams. The American Nightmare has awakened, and a new chapter in WWE history has begun.

SPARK OF SOMETHING SPECIAL
THE RISE OF THE AMERICAN JOSHI PROMOTION
As Japanese women’s promotions continue to gain influence worldwide, joshi-inspired companies have begun popping up around the U.S. In this feature story, PWI helps explain the growing phenomenon
TEXT BY KAREN PETERSON

[Maya Yukihi, a two-time former champion of the Ice Ribbon promotion, twists the limbs of COLOR’s leader SAKI. This meeting in Orlando marked the very first singles bout between the two.]
OVER EIGHT YEARS of working the Japanese independent circuit contemporaneously, Maya Yukihi and SAKI have crossed paths numerous times. With showcase matches at Pro Wrestling NOAH and All Japan Pro Wrestling, competing in Stardom’s 2023 Triangle Derby, and working at multiple women’s promotions in Japan, they’d never faced off in a one-on-one bout. However, that changed on October 14, at the Englewood Neighborhood Center in Orlando, Florida, where these world-renowned freelance wrestlers finally locked horns in a main-event singles match for the inaugural SPARK Joshi Atlantic championship. “We’ve wrestled plenty of times, but always in tag and three-person matches,” Yukihi said enthusiastically. “I didn’t expect this to happen in the united states!”
The North American scene, in particular, has seen a significant uptick in Japanese wrestlers exploring the international wrestling landscape with fly-ins for single commitments, while others gain notoriety by making frequent visits to various North American and European promotions. Showcase tournaments such as the Mae Young Classic and the success of Japanese stars in WWE and All Elite Wrestling have served as the gateway for many to begin exploring their options outside the big companies.
American independent promotions–GCW, Deadlock Pro, West Coast Pro, and Prestige Wrestling, to name a few–have showcased Japanese talent, further contributing to the interest and continued success of the Japanese women’s wrestling scene. Even legends including Chigusa Nagayo, Bull Nakano, and Manami Toyota have all worked with international promotions to help make joshi more accessible across the board.
[“If wrestling in Japan isn’t a goal, I would question your intentions as a wrestler.” Thus says Australia native KZT, seen here making good use of her jiu-jitsu skills against Kelsey Raegan.]
The diversity in the North American independent scene isn’t just minted to athletes from Japan, as many wrestlers have relocated to the United States to hone their craft or work in backstage capacities. While she competes for WOW Superheros as Exodus, works behind the scenes t a major American promotion, and frequents East Coast outfits including GCW and frequents East Coast outfits including GCW, and DPW, KZT is an Australia-born wrestler based in Orlando with a full plate and an even bigger bucket list. “Wrestling in Japan is an absolute goal of mine. If wrestling in Japan isn’t a goal, I would question your intentions as a wrestler,” KZT mused, looking back at a recent work trip to the country.
When asked for her thoughts on being an Australian working in an American-based Japanese-inspired promotion in SPARK, she smiled. “It pretty much goes in line with who I am as a person,” explained KZT, who showed off her jiu-jitsu skills against Flordia mainstay Kelsey Raegan. “People always assume some things about me, but as soon as I open my mouth, they notice my Australian accent, and they find out things like I’m a black belt. I’ve never been one to fit in.”
For many wrestlers, making the journey to Japan–even for one single match–remains a bucket list item, as trying to find a foothold within the competitive market can be rather challenging. Founded in 2023, SPARK Joshi Puroresu of America is one of the latest showcase promotions to further expand opportunities for Women’s wrestling–and specifically, for wrestling on an international level.
The existence of Japanese-inspired wrestling promotions, such as Kitsune Women’s Wrestling and SPARK Joshi Puroresu of America, has inspired excitement among fans and wrestlers alike. These leagues provide another avenue for fans to experience Japanese wrestling without the international airfare; offer Japanese competitors chances to experience the international fan response while wrestling deserve opponents from around the world; and serve as a potential proving ground for talent interested in achieving the elusive dream of wrestling in Japan.
“When [SPARK] contacted me, I [realized] that this is something that I can bring my British skills to, plus what I learned in Japan. Said Xia Brookside, just prior to her title bout with SPARK Joshi Pacific champion Ram Kaichow. “And with all the talented women here, we can show an American audience what women wrestlers are made of.”
Brookside, a former member of the NXT U.K. roster, made her Japanese debut with Stardom at 18 years old. Now 25, the daughter of retired British grappler Robbie Brookside has completed five tours in Japan. Her most recent excursion was for the Triangle Derby in January 2023, when she completed as part of Mina Shirakawa’s unit, Club Venus.
[Maika Ozaki applies a camel clutch to Amber Nova during their encounter at RISING HEAT East.]
For Japanese natives performing outside of their home country, one of the biggest eye-openers tends to be the energy of the international crowd–especially how vocal fans are with their opinions and expressions. Typically, Japanese audiences don’t break into song, rounds of chanting, or candidly express their opinions. However, the overall positive energy is definitely not lost in translation. “Because we’re in America, I was curious what the atmosphere would be like,” confessed Miu Wantanaabe, a popular member of the TJPW roster who has only wrestled internationally a handful of times. “The fans know and love Japanese wrestling, so it made me so happy.” In her victory over IMPACT’s KiLynn King, Wantanabe put her strength and power to the test, refusing to let the language barrier impede her performance.
One of the clear advantages of SPARK and similar promotions is the shared enthusiasm to pay homage to Japanese wrestling traditions, but to present them in a way that is more accessible to the non-Japanese speaking market. SPARK showrunner Chibi (C.B.) joins with inaugural SPARK Atlantic champion SAKI (founder of freelance group COLOR’S) to open and close each show with a self-produced, Japanese pop-inspired theme song called “ZA SUPAAKU” (“THE SPARK”).”I was able to come to the United States for the first time with the advent of SPARK Joshi,” SAKI told PWI, after defeating Maya Ykihi in the main event of RISING HEAT EAST in Orlando. “So, I want to do my best to help take the company to new highs.”
[Xia Brookside struggles to break free of Ram Kaichow’s grip during an unsuccessful bid for the SPARK Joshi Pacific title.]
[SAKI, as the newly crowned SPARK Joshi Atlantic champion, closed out RISING HEAT EAST on a high note.
MODERN MYTH PHOTOGRAPHY]
With the various women’s promotions in Japan opening their doors to more international wrestlers, promotions such as SPARK offer opportunities for American prospects to build rapport with potential future colleagues, while also gaining a career understanding of what they should expect when they touch down in Japan (should they choose to pursue that). “It’s a dream come true,” said Texas native Jessie Elaban. “I wanted to bring everything that I learned in Japan to the States.”
Elaban, who formerly competed for NXT under the name Jessi Kamea, also joined Mina Shirakawa’s Club Venus stable during a 2023 Stardom stint. In a conversation after the show, she seemed grateful for the dynamic new platform in SPARK. “I am having to make adjustments between Japanese and American styles,” admitted Elaban. “But I feel like I'm able to be more fluid with the new me.”
In addition to helping talent grow and prosper, proliferation of American international leagues is an obvious benefit for fans of exciting, athletic, and hard-hitting wrestling. Promotions such as SPARK and Kitsune–and Sukeban, which filmed a colorful TV pilot this past September in New York City–have captured the imaginations of those who stream joshi shows and covet chances to see their favorite ring performers mix it up in person.
With the global presence of joshi continuing to mount, the future is bright for women’s wrestling. And, with the ever-increasing interest in Japanese wrestling, forbidden doors are getting kicked open around the world.

aew revolution 2024 winner predictions
given that we’ve shared some wrestling opinions on the incomplete guide (sorry for not updating much recently), here’s our quick run-down of winner predictions for the card (with one-sentence commentary, we can’t resist)
pre-show 12-man tag: jeff jarrett’s stable with willie mack and private party. they have more people outside of the ring, and the bang bang scissor gang have been undermining each other, so cannot co-exist
pre-show women’s tag: julia hart and skye blue. stokely hathaway will be the undoing of my fave, willow nightingale, and her tag partner, kris statlander (also, pre-show? lest there be too many women on the actual card)
all-star scramble: wardlow. before the meat madness was reformed, it was his to lose, so why change anything by getting reedier guys, like chris jericho, booked?
stables tag: bcc. jon moxley and claudio castagnioli cannot be outbled, even by the very committed ftr
tnt championship: christian cage. his out-of-ring support massively outflanks daniel garcia, and there’s no way the patriarch wins this fair and square
international championship: roderick strong. not only will the undisputed kingdom get more underhanded than the best friends, but we think that trent barreta will crack and undermine orange cassidy
npjw showcase: will ospreay. there’s no way there’s a new kid on the block without him winning this match against konosuke takeshita, but it will definitely be a match that shows off the best of both’s abilities
continental crown championship: bryan danielson. despite the american dragon not being interested in gold, the lynchpin of the story is that eddie kingston wants his hand shaken, so what’s better than putting up such an amazing fight even while losing to earn danielson’s respect enough to get the handshake?
women’s world championship: toni storm. deonna purazzo has made a great impression, but the all about eve storyline needs mariah may to take it all away from toni instead
world championship: samoa joe. hangman adam page is willing to let joe retain the belt, so long as he can prevent swerve strickland from getting it - so hangman will sacrifice himself
tag team championship: the young bucks. for sting’s last match, he won’t want to be remembered as a champion, but as the one that passed over the torch to the new guard.

Redesign, Rebuild, Reclaim
Tumblr media
PART 1
Seth Rollins and Kynlee Lockwood were on top of the world circa 2015, champions, the faces of the company. The world heavyweight champion and the divas champion were untouchable with The Authority in their corner, until Seth’s knee gave out. Kynlee made her leave from the company during this time, no longer feeling she got the respect she deserves but what happens when Seth returns to fight Hunter and the odds need to be evened?
(some events in this will not be timeline accurate)
Being a part of The Authority was never easy so after Seth tore his right ACL, MCL and medical meniscus lets just say things were never the same. Kynlee valued the time she had previously spent by the World Heavyweight Champion’s side, dominating the men's and women's respective divisions so when he was no longer around the champ had lost motivation... she was being scheduled in matches against the likes of Eva Marie and Alicia Fox most of them not lasting longer then 5 minutes, this ultimately left her to take an indefinite leave of absence from the company.
------------------------------------------------------------
MONDAY NIGHT RAW - February 15th 2016
(103 days since Seth’s injury)
Walking down to the ring to the beat of her entrance theme accompanied by an overwhelming light display with the Diva’s title clasped around her waist, a microphone in her hand and a void expression on her face Kynlee only had one thing on her mind... Change.
“Cut my music!”
Whispers and low mumbles of confusion emit from the crowd, normally if the Divas champ was in the ring The Authority would be hot on her heels so to say this was unusual is an understatement.
“I know a lot of you will be confused as to why I'm here and normally I would be standing here boasting about my position with this title belt around my waist but tonight's different. You see for the last couple of months things haven't been right, I no longer feel valued in this company for the talent I hold and the revenue I bring to this business so it is in my best interest to cut my losses and leave before I can be buried like many other women in this roster and the wrestling world. We are not valued for the amount of work we put in to this job because most of us don't get more than five minutes of air time.”
“I was naïve enough to believe in joining The Authority I would be able to showcase my talent and help others on the roster during our matches together,  but it took my best friend’s knee caving in to realise even though I'm at the highest point I can be in my career things don't always improve they can get worse. Seth... just know that me leaving isn't me abandoning you, when you return you will continue to defy odds and win back the title you never lost and I will be there cheering you on every step of the way, you will continue your story but unfortunately for me... mine ends here.”
“I lay down my title in hope that one day the women's division is respected and valued just as much as the men’s because we deserve it, The WWE has a platform to showcase the talent of women and changes need to be made for the benefit of the amazing ladies behind that curtain and the business”
Dropping the mic to the floor and placing the pink and silver butterfly belt in the middle of the ring, Kynlee begins her ascend back up the ramp, never once turning back but her strong façade falters for the first time that night.

EXTREME RULES 2016 - Newark, New Jersey
Its been three months since the departure of Kynlee Lockwood and change has  definitely been made since then. The Authority had disbanded in April. The Diva’s title has since been retired and a triple-threat match had been held at WrestleMania 32 to crown Charlotte as the inaugural WWE Women’s Champion. Roman Reigns had defeated Triple H to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
One thing hadn't changed and that was the return of Seth Rollins.
Seth’s POV
“Hey, how are you?”
The sweet southern twang travelled through my private trailer as Kynlee stepped through the door.
“I’m good, just got cleared for tonight still got some swelling but nothing on the joint so. Mentally I'm still preparing I mean there's only the cage match, the women’s and then main event”
Kynlee’s hand reached out to hold mine and I felt at ease with the subtle touch, she brought me a kind of comfort that cannot be found anywhere else but with her, within her arms and under the soft gaze of her eyes. I didn't know the extent of this warm feeling that had protected me in the months of my rehab. Could it be love? True unconditional love?  I had no doubt that without her I wouldn't have the opportunity to return to my passion as quick as I did, she was my motivation.
Kynlee’s POV
“Why don’t you come back with me, We could do it all again I mean no one’s done it as good as we did, as good as you.”
Staring into his deep brown eyes I could tell he wanted it, he was pleading for it. I wanted it too. I really did but not yet.
Seth and I had grown closer during his rehab process, closer then friends but that was a secret always hidden behind doors (mainly gym and hospital ones), to admit I'm scared is an understatement, I'm scared about what if Seth’s not ready? what if I go back but Seth gets injured? what if Seth excels like I know he will but I'm forgotten because I left?
“Seth I'm not sure. I mean you left because you had to you had to take care of your physical health and preserve you mental health. I left because I got upset. I left for a selfish reason. I was an embarrassment to the company when I left they wouldn't want me back”
Tears well up in my eyes as I feel a rough hand brush against my cheek the soft aroma of Seth’s cologne welcomes me into a sense of tranquillity. It was the subtle things that help ground me and Seth knew that, a look of reassurance, the linking of our hands or the warmth of him embrace.
Turning to the monitor on the wall it shows Charlotte and Natalya in the heat of their match both desperately scrambling to lock in submissions to pick up the win.
“You see that title, the title those two talented women are putting a hell of a show on for? You made that change, it was your speech and dedication that got the word Diva banned and that stupid butterfly belt retired. You gave the women their power back, so why not go claim yours? Baby go show that roster who does it best who's got the longest historic reign for a women's belt.”
----
EXTREME RULES - MAIN EVENT
“OMG ITS-  ITS SETH ROLLINS!”
“ITS SETH ROLLINS, A PEDIGREE!”
“SETH ROLLINS IS BACK!, SETH ROLLINS IS HERE A PEDIGREE TO THE CHAMPION”
“Seth Rollins a former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and remember he never lost the title he was forced to vacate it due to injury last year”
As the show closes the last scene is Seth Rollins with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in his grasp with his former shield brother Roman Reigns at his feet.
After returning backstage and receiving a large amount of praise and complements Seth could only think of one thing and that was the women he had grown to love who sat waiting proudly in his trailer, he showed the world he could come back and concur and that's what he going to help her do.
She had Redesigned the women’s image in the WWE ,
helped Rebuild a broken Seth Rollins,
and now she needs to Reclaim her title and division.

What Turned me Gay (Not Really) - OTK Backbreaker
It took me a while to admit that erotic wrestling was my thing. In fact there was a period of time when I deluded myself into thinking I was into the athleticism *cough cough* involved in wrestling.  Low and behold, one day I did have an epiphany, a wake up call of sorts, when the homo eroticism of wrestling was far too obvious to hide and that was the day I saw the Over the knee backbreaker.
What turned me gay (not really) ...
Tumblr media
Evan Karagias v Chris Jericho - Over the Knee Backbreaker
This post, inspired by the sidelineland.com blog, takes a tongue and cheek look into "what made me gay (not really)" and I have to say, this move didn't so much turn me anything, but rather made it impossible to deny that Wrestling = Erotic.
I couldn't not show Alex Wright in this position
Tumblr media
Arn Anderson v Marcus Bagwell Image Credit: wrestlingarsenal.net
So picture it, me, a young boy watching WCW when all of sudden I am awe struck by the sight of a wrestler in an Over the Knee (OTK) Backbreaker.  To say the hold was emasculating was an understatement, and to say that the move got me excited was an overshare.  Needless to say the hold itself awakened something inside of me.  I recall being glued to the television set and riveted by the action taking place on screen, so much so that my brother gave me a hard time about liking the hold, a bit too much.
Brother: "That hold is weak and totally fake. Why do you keep rewinding it to watch it?  I bet it doesn't even hurt."
Me: "..."
Brother: "I mean it looks dumb. And it's sooooo gay."
Me: "..." [Grabs pillow to place on my lap]
Now there are obviously many an erotic wrestling hold out there and the OTK backbreaker is not overtly sexual, so what was it about it that had such a pull on me in a youth?  The crotch claw comes to mind as another erotic wrestling hold and so do many types of pins, so what's special about this?
Well, what makes the OTK backbreaker special to me is that it contains a certain exhibition, dominance, and most of all, a vanity to it.  Few other holds out there can match the OTK backbreaker as a way to showcase your sexy jobber to the audience.  Furthermore, it also requires an eagerness to submit to your heel as the hold demands the cooperation of the jobber in order to work.  Now if that combination doesn't deserve deeper thought, then I don't know what does.
What I would've given to have access to all these OTK images way back then ... *sigh*

The parody movie, But I'm a Cheerleader, constantly reminds the audience that homosexuality has a root and that finding that root is important - now I'm not sure I buy into any of that, but that's really not the point;  For me at least, from that moment on, I simply couldn't ignore wrestling or create convincing delusions or excuses on why I really watched it.
You see, the sight of a handsome Evan Karagias bent over Chris Jericho's knee was a root of sorts.  After that, there was simply no going back to my other fantasies and without a doubt the OTK backbreaker turned me gay (not really).

Rebbie's Wrestling School - 1.3: Constructing a Match
So, we know what a match is now. Two or more people fight in the ring and have a grand old time! But now it's time to expand on our knowledge beyond the rules and format. How does a match get made? How do they put it all together? And what makes this really mean anything? Well, I'm so so so happy to tell you!
Tumblr media
Let's get started with the TNA Genesis... I mean, the genesis of McGilli- I MEAN, the genesis of a match. Sorry, wrestling humour. Anyway, matches are made by the booker, a term you may be familiar with if you've ever followed much boxing. Bookers, in wider sport, are the people who organise, set-up, and promote match cards, and it's similar in wrestling! Here, the matches and storylines are laid down by the booker or bookers, who pick who will face who on any given show, and what storyline will be being told. The booker may be the head of a company, or they may be a high-profile individual within it, and they usually lead a team of people who work on the booking. In the past, there's even been booking committees! Writers may be employed to write segments outside of matches, or wrestlers themselves may be heavily involved, it all depends on the company, but the main thing to know is: the booker(s) set up the matches.
So, let's say: a match has been made. On this week's episode of TV, T. Booker has decided to book John Cena vs. my new original wrestler OC, "Average" Joe Jones. Now, this match could be made for lots of reasons. Maybe it's just for John Cena to quickly win, to get him on the show and demonstrate how good he is. This is informally known as a "squash" match, and if Joe Jones makes a habit of this, he may informally, and slightly derogatorily, become known as a "jobber". But maybe this match is a bit more competitive! It could still just be a one-and-done match though, something to showcase both men, and maybe it allows for Cena's latest enemy to interfere with his business, or attack him post-victory. Joe gets a good match out of it and he likely moves on to the next challenge which is (hopefully!) next week. But maybe John Cena's beef is with our very own Joe Jones! They're gonna have a much more intense match with much more story to it! Let's take this instance to analyse how this match gets constructed.
Tumblr media
So the booker made this match, and we've decided this was done for a storyline between Joe Jones and John Cena. A match like this could have sprung from a previous match between the two, or maybe one got involved in the other's business, or maybe Joe laid out a challenge to the 16-times world champion, or maybe they just plain don't like each other as established in a non-ring segment in a show prior! Now, our booker's involvement in the actual match's layout will vary from booker to booker, match to match. The only certain thing is they probably decided on a winner. With a high-profile star like Cena, he may have had some say in that decision, something the booker may listen to whether it be a case of respect or preserving morale, but the booker will have the final say on that. Some bookers may also get involved in the match "script", as it were. Our booker may just want to have certain key moments included, for example they may want Cena to win with his Attitude Adjustment finishing move. This will be communicated with the talent and they'll include that.
In bigger companies and in the modern day, even more organisation may be put in to the match layout, especially to keep some uniqueness up between the matches on one show. This is usually where an agent or producer comes in. These will usually be former wrestlers who act as a third-party, mediator, and authority on the planning out of a match. John Cena and Joe Jones may need to run some of their ideas by the agent, or build it up entirely with them, it all depends on the company and seniority of the stars. But as I alluded to, the way a match comes together will largely be via discussion between our competitors.

Generally, there's three ways wrestlers like to call their regular matches:
Meticulous Planning - Some wrestlers, especially today, like to plan out most facets of their match. Of course, being a live show and so heavily dependent on crowd engagement (something I'll get back to later), some things need to be left until the moment and flexibility is key. However, having a full idea of how the match will go can lead to brilliant results! Former wrestler Diamond Dallas Page is well-known to have been somewhat of an innovator of this style, and many wrestlers from the independent scene of the last 20 years also use this method
Loose Planning - This is probably the "cue cards" approach to wrestling. A wrestler may want to have a decent idea of the beats of their match beforehand, so they might layout a few key "spots" as they're known. For example, Joe Jones might have a great counter for one of Cena's moves, so they make sure to include that at some point. But to navigate between each motion and key moment of the match, the two wrestlers may improvise in the ring. Typically, this is done by one of the wrestlers subtly "calling spots" to their peers, or it's even been known for referees to contribute, whether that be pre-agreed or due to instructions from the booker. Even in a planned out match, calling spots can be necessary because who has the memory for that, but it's still common to do it partially on the fly.
Calling It in The Ring - Our third method is, naturally, calling the whole thing live. Many wrestlers have confessed to having matches, sometimes all-time great ones too, that they just laid out step-by-step in the ring. I describe this at the Fucking Bananas way! It's pretty impressive, truth be told, and is a very good skill to have for a live show, where anything can go wrong at any moment.
Having an idea of how the match gets planned out, we can now start to look into the dynamics, story, and physicality of the match.
Throughout his career, John Cena has primarily played a good guy. Any wrestler worth their salt has some level of character, and a traditionally key part of wrestling is the battles of good and evil. We call good guys "faces" or "babyfaces", and bad guys "heels". A good guy, like Cena, will generally get the fans on side. They probably appeal to the crowd, do the more exciting moves, and are the protagonist of the story. On the other, the baddies try to antagonise where possible. They may yell at the crowd, wrestle more brutally or underhandedly, or run down the faces. There is the issue that the heels can generally be a lot more fun! But that creates the challenge of the wrestlers to get the desired results, and the bookers to assign roles and build stories properly.
In the modern day, there's also the blurry middle role, known as "tweeners", who are usually anti-hero style morally grey types. A suitably edgy name. Now, some wrestlers stay in one role forever, i.e Cena, but many change at least a couple times over their career, altering their character accordingly. This can help freshen them up or serve an emotional storyline, and we call them "turns". So a good guy may "turn heel" or a villain might "turn face".

Back to our match: the dynamics of our two competitors can play a big part in our match! We could have both Cena and Joe Jones be faces, battling for supremacy in a sporting rivalry. Or maybe Joe is a heel, looking to get one over Cena by any means necessary. We could even have two baddies facing off in a battle of pure nefariousness! These dynamics all play a big part in a match. We naturally like to have someone to root for and someone to root against, and it's why the most popular stories in media are usually underdogs overcoming the odds, or good vs. evil. By playing two characters off each other, we give the audience something to bite into and get invested in. The usual method is to pit a heel against a face, but face vs. face is also common! Heel vs heel matches do occur to though, when the time calls for it. These characters can also be somewhat liquid, so for example, in a face vs. face match or feud, one may "play the heel" or "work heel". There's also room for development in this system! Maybe we have a face vs. face battle, but some animosity and tension starts to form. One wrestler gets angry, or starts to resort to cheap tactics. This adds a whole other layer of depth to the proceedings! These characters and the crowd's reactions are absolutely essential to a great wrestling match.
This is largely where the occasional comparison to pantomime comes in. We all know this is a show, but you have to let yourself get carried away in the moment. The crowd's reactions lend so much to a match! In many matches, you will see wrestlers playing to the crowd, or involving them in the action. For example, you may see the face and the heel having a back-and-forth of strikes. This is designed to get the crowd to make noise, and you'll hear them cheer as the face strikes, then boo as the heel strikes. Alternatively, the face may be in danger of getting counted out, being downed outside the ring. This is meant to create tension, and whip the crowd into support of the face, and build the noise until they get back in the ring just in time! Being willing to suspend your disbelief and play along is a big part of watching wrestling!

I'd say the crowd engagement is 50% like pantomime, but the other 50% is like the idea of football (soccer) crowds being the "12th man". In football, the crowds love to sing and chant for their favourite team, as well as build a general atmosphere that can add so much to a great game, and motivate the action on the pitch. Pro wrestling has a very similar relationship to its crowd, which is part of the reason why UK crowds are so well known for their engagement and unique interactions. There's a whole bucket of familiar chants and phrases that wrestling crowds love to employ, with "this is awesome", "let's go [wrestler]", and "fight forever" being some of the most common. There's also the less positive, such as "boring" or "bullshit", or even reactionary chants like "you sick fuck". Personalised chants for certain wrestlers are also common, with some of the most prominent being "ohhhh bask in his glory" for Keith Lee (to the tune of Seven Nation Army) and Sami Zayn's "ole" chants. These not only express just how the fans are feeling, they also help create a truly electric environment for matches and segments that's so wonderful.
This has been quite a big lesson so far, so I think now is the time to wrap this one up! Much more focused with less jokes here, but there's a lot to cover! In the next lesson, I'll be discussing the in-ring action, how they do it, what it's like, and how this can be used to tell a story! Be sure to stick around and hear it from Rebbie!
