I thought these kids left but apparently they might be back based on a few weird things I've seen the last couple of days, so here's a preemptive warning because I found out not as many people as I thought knew about this. There is an spnblr group on here who started a witch hunt for secret wincest shippers a year or two ago. They would constantly drop into people's DMs and ask boxes to demand proof that they aren't into brother fucking, and aren't a filthy "wincest adjacent". As someone who rarely remembers wincest even exists, these little stalkers forced more people to constantly think and hear about wincest than any actual wincest shipper I've ever seen. Their "well meaning" goal was to help protect people with triggers but all they did was constantly talk about incest, remind people about incest, and obsessively search for incest content all the goddamn time. They would come into people's inboxes to "gently" let them know they reblogged random innocuous posts from wincest shippers, and police what other people had filtered and blocked. This reached a level where certain individuals were going back months through strangers blogs searching for proof of alleged "wincest adjacency", then putting people on mass blocklists that became glorified hit lists for hate anons. While pretending they were on a holy mission from god, what they mostly accomplished was to harass and bully people while reminding sensitive people of their triggers all of the time. They also slandered and harassed a friend of mine because they'd decided she was a evil filthy "wincest adjacent", and I am still mad about it. That's your PSA.

Considering OP is yelling at ppl to leave them alone when questioned on specifics because a post that says “the grooming in spn fandom is insane” (specifically Wincest) was “not a callout” and only “a legitimate safety concern” about “a space is known for well you know”, they are not worth the time. They also reacted very rudely to an anon who only wanted to apologize for following them (thinking that OP was anti Wincest and trying to respect OP’s boundaries). Just not worth it.

People need to stop making such serious accusations when they refuse to back it up. Words fucking mean things. Saying a certain sector of the fandom--that ostensibly you're also a part of?--has a problem with grooming and is stupid...that was NOT worded in a way to help people stay safe. It was worded like a vague callout post to scare people. We've seen those before. 🙄

A post that was actually concerned about grooming in online spaces *in general* would list some things to be aware of, things to recognize, tips for getting out of a situation. But no, it's this vaguepost without anything specific, with the one question in the notes asking for an explanation or if it's sarcasm-- unanswered [eta: well maybe they responded and I can't see it, since I realized I had op blocked]-- and one reblog from a person who claims it wasn't about wincesties specifically, when it demonstrably WAS??

So who is doing it, and where/how? I don't necessarily think it's a good idea to make public posts with names that devolve into personal beef and worse, but if someone is making the accusation that there's a grooming problem in the fandom they need to come with receipts or at the very least descriptions of the situation??

If there was no one specific, why reblog a post specifically about the wincest fandom having insaneeee grooming? It wasn't "just in general." It's not a joke, yet this reply looks entirely unserious.

I am too old to keep seeing this type of shit go through the fandom at regular intervals, especially when it's so often a false accusation based on interpersonal drama. The only purpose this serves is riling up the dash. It's exhausting, and waters down the gravity of the accusation by making it a phrase that cries wolf.

I'm not even saying outright that the post is a LIE; just that it has seriously similar markers of past drama that was approximately 90% unaddressed purity culture biases about fiction, 9% interpersonal beef, and 1% actual concern for a human being who was an adult, but young. And it led to the utter gutting of fandom, loss of acquaintances, deletion of a glut of fic-- all due to smearing the reputation of a writer by using horrible UNTRUE AND INCENDIARY ACCUSATIONS.

So I'm sure many of you already understand why I take umbrage with these types of posts! Who knows if it's about fiction or something real? 🤷‍♀️

And since there's no further context to be found, the way it LOOKS on the dash is that someone is taking creeper!Dean too seriously. It could be about something else, but who knows.

Sorry if you've already answered this but bro can I ask wtf happened to shipping and incest? Like I have been around in fandoms for a long time now and I swear the change between shipping siblings and it being what helps dictate you are vile human happened like whiplash for me. One moment it was fine and another moment you were getting death threats for daring to treat Loki and Thor as more than siblings even though the mcu fandom was sorta chill with it for years. I'm not saying EVERYONE was ok with shipping siblings (like no one should judge you for that lol) but it WAS tolerated for a long time. What happened??? I felt like purity culture sneak up on me. Now shipping incest gets thrown in with 'wrong things that help show you are a bad person' such as a being pedo (no one is defending that hopefully...). I suppose I'm not trying ask if it's moral or not (it's shipping), but more so what the fuck happened and if I should feel guilty and bad about enjoying those types of ships?? Are they truly in the same line as liking gross pedo ships?? Apologies for if this ask stirs trouble, I am just genuinely confused about what happened and why the tolerance for those ships dropped so low and you get called a demon for doing so (everyone knows incest is bad, no one was ever agreeing it wasn't but none of it was real. It was just literally fun...)

You're really summarising some of my own thoughts and questions on the matter. Honestly, I wasn't actively involved in fandom back in 2013 or so, but I recently noticed that same change as well! For example, for the longest time I wasn't even aware that people were opposed to the Thor&Loki ship based on the incest factor and the most contact I had with wincest at the time was a gif set where apparently someone asked JP during a con what he thought of it and he said "I don't think they think it's real, it's just a hot fantasy" - I remember that post so vividly because I saw it and went "yeah, makes sense" and went back to my 2014 posting. In 2020, my first introduction to the spn fandom was a BLOCK LIST with blogs who post wincest content. A BLOCK LIST?! that was so absurd and laughable and honestly made me feel so bad about fandom in general. So, yeah. I definitely agree with you, there has been a huge shift in fandom culture as to what is seen as "approptiate shipping behaviour".

Firstly: I do of course understand why people might be uncomfortable with the topic. I understand that it can be triggering, too. This makes this topic a complicated and layered one, but I don't think it means we should erase the theme from all pieces of fiction. I also don't think making others feel miserable, sending death threads or other witch hunts of the sort to strangers on the internet is justified in ANY way. Now as for your questions —

What happened? Honestly, no idea. I wonder if it's a side effect of websites being made more and more "kid friendly", banning nudity and swear words and all that to appeal to advertisers. Maybe the kids being raised in this environment adopt those mind sets? I'm not sure.

Should you feel guilty for enjoying those kinds of ships? Absolutely not. Incest can be a very interesting trope for many reasons - it can be used in gothic settings, it can be used as a "forbidden love" trope, etc. Some people make it a point to say that they like it but ONLY if those stories are dark and evil and metaphors for abuse etc, they're not like those nasty creatures who think it's "hot". But, honestly, I always get back to JP and his nonchalant reaction. "It's a hot fantasy", and voilà. I don't like it when people insist on feeling shame or - even worse - making others feel shame for meaningless things like that.

Which brings me to the idea that enjoying incest ships (for whatever reason, be it because the relationship is intricate, rotten and terrible or because it'd be hot) makes you a bad person - that's ridiculous. "Incest harms real people", yes. So does murder. I hope we're not using this logic to hunt down everyone who likes fictional murderers. Enjoying a specific dynamic in fiction does not mean you would encourage this behaviour in real life. It also doesn't mean you'd put anyone in real life in danger or hurt them. It means you enjoy this specific dynamic for one reason or another, that's all. So please, don't make yourself feel miserable for something like this.

There is also the fact that incest porn (as in, real porn where real people are filmed acting out fantasies for other people to get off to) is so incredibly popular. In the logic of the purity culture fandom people (who seem to ignore this fact and focus on random people drawing or writing about fictional people btw), this would mean that many, MANY men (who those videos are usually aimed at) secretly want to fuck their siblings, step mothers, etc. I sincerely doubt that that's the case. Instead, I think it's a sign that sexuality is very complex and we can't just narrow it down to "you think this is hot = you're evil rotten and morally corrupted"

I also have to bring up one last point: This shift in culture is not limited to fandom, although fandom people seem to be extremely loud and ruthless about this with their witch hunts. I've seen people act this way about Lolita by Nabokov and other pieces of literature, for example. Frankly, it's embarrassing to see. It's sad, too. Can people not interact with fiction anymore? Not every piece of fiction is meant as a moral indicator, we aren't 10 anymore and not every piece of art has to be Dr Seuss or Aesop.

This got very long and I don't want to get too off track, so to sum up: I don't think you should feel guilty for enjoying incest ships or themes in fiction. Really, that's your personal business and not anyone else's - and I mean that in a positive way.

I hope we as a culture grow out of this phase soon and we can all go back to having a relaxed, healthy approach to shipping/fandom/literature/art by avoiding what we dislike and focusing on what we enjoy.

if you look at the second definition for the word "movement" in english, easily found from a quick google search, you will see that my use of language was accurate.

Secondly, I equated the anti-sex, psudo-liberal, neo-puritanical fandom censorship movement in the list with the terf movement specifically to point out to idiots like you that their ideologies are related. So that maybe you would do some fucking reflection (god knows you need some) and realize that your silly little internet policing scheme is fucked up, actually.

I could have also likened the movement to conservative Christianity, the Hays Code, Nazi Occupied Germany and a litany of other things that you really don't want to be associated with. Just because your random pieces of cowardice harm people less than something I might compare them to, doesn't mean it's a problem with me.

It reminds me of back in S15. We already knew about the confession. I was writing cosmogenic meta that happened to cross into deancas, because it's not MY fault they installed it to the FUCKING mytharc. But then megstielers and multishippers in a ship server started complaining that it was posted in general and not ship, because it dared to breathe about what the writers were doing with the actual text. Then boom here it all comes true.

In the meantime those same people were building deranged headcanons that Meg was Cas' endgame and the were going to break out of the empty together and save the day. Because they had ZERO pulse of the actual text but DAMN if they didn't want to argue about it the whole damn way while half of us already had the goddamn scripts at that point.

But they entered that shit to conversation like it was somehow a viable argument. Fandom's become so deluded in All Interpretations Are Equal, these people came to truly confuse their Ao3s with the authors intents. Be that megstiel, samstiel, wincest. Notice the list of multishippers with agendas that got swept up in my askbox block spree. There's a trend here, kids.

People are going to learn real quick that your emotions and opinions are only in your head, and you never once listened to the authors for real--be it Robbie in public or any of them for the morals, ethics, and philosophies they were trying to teach you. But those are still driving the show, and now, with the muzzle off, they're tweeting it out: this is revenge.

But these people still can't hear. Won't hear. Refuse to hear. They continue to cobble up their weird ass takes like this and hope everything stays Fair And Balanced(tm) in their multiship sandbox, or whatever. Literally just projecting AO3 at the text and trying to cram pack their nonsense into it. And after doing it for years, they can't stop, even when Robbie's putting out warning lights and you hear the bunker alarms screaming danger, will robinson, it's deancas and it's gay, just look at the socials.

Did I get put on a block list at some point? I just tried to reblog a post from someone I was friendly mutuals with back when I preferred destiel to wincest, and the reblog failed. Looking at the replies/reblogs, it seems like I've been blocked by a whole bunch of people I've never even heard of, much less interacted with.

It isn't that I object to being blocked. You guys do you, whatever, there are much worse ways to handle conflict. But this is part of why I usually try to stay off people's radars. It annoys me that people are out there making their notps a moral issue, and then I get blocked even though I'm minding my own business, and it affects my ability to participate in totally separate fandoms.

Gotten some new followers & it’s been more than a year since my last intro post, so figured it was due an update.

Started out as a Supernatural blog when I got back into it over the pandemic, currently a SPN & multi-fandom blog riffing on stories with similar themes (family dysfunction, incest, trauma, generational wounds, the horrors of war, masculinity, and so on).

I’ve watched up through SPN S11 & while my emotional investment is centered around the Kripke era (S1 - S6), there are parts of later seasons I enjoy. (Will I watch S12 - S15? Remains to be seen.) Having now seen all of SPN, I’m still primarily invested in the Kripke/Gamble seasons, although I enjoy aspects of Carver/Dabb. Dean is my dude, I like Sam and Cas, and side character favs include Victor, Bela, Anna, Crowley, and Jack. Not much into shipping, at least as the main framework for engaging with the show, but there are pairings I like. I also do post about / discuss Wincest (both Sam/Dean & Dean/John), although I don’t consider myself a shipper per se—I think the incestuous subtext & themes are a central part of the show, and not talking about them means missing out on a big part of the text—and as an FYI I tag w/ #wincest and/or #incest cw for blocking purposes. When I do occasionally write fic or meta, I prefer to have at least one foot in canon and lean more Doylist than the fandom mainstream.
