National Peanut Day
Did you know that peanuts have almost zero cholesterol? That’s just one of many reasons why peanuts are such a popular ingredient, snack and superfood!
History of National Peanut Day
While it has the word “nut” in its name, the peanut is actually not a nut at all but is technically a legume, closely related to beans or seeds. Peanuts grow underground and probably originated in South America around 1500 BC. They made their way around the world and became very popular in North America some time around the 1700s, but weren’t grown commercially for quite a few more years.
After PT Barnum’s circus began selling hot roasted peanuts, the snack grew in popularity. They even became popular at baseball games, a distinctly American pastime. Then, in 1904, peanut butter was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
Today, peanut farms in the United States are valued at more than $1 billion, making this a very lucrative business. Peanut butter accounts for around half of this business, while snack nuts and confections made with peanuts bring in the other half.
Now it’s time to celebrate National Peanut Day!
How to Celebrate National Peanut Day
Enjoy celebrating this day in a variety of fun and tasty ways!
Eat Some Delicious Peanuts
National Peanut Day is a chance to work some peanuts into a healthy diet, used in any way from tasty lunchbox snacks to as a tangy stir-fry sauce. Peanuts make a great snack that can be taken anywhere. And with more protein than any other nut, they are also nutritious. In fact, they’re so great that they are the top rated snack in the United States, making up ⅔ of the entire nut market in the nation. So grab some peanuts in celebration of this popular treat!
Incorporate Peanuts into Recipes
Even those who aren’t super creative when it comes to culinary artistry can still add peanuts to a variety of recipes. Starting with the simplest of combinations: Good Old Raisins and Peanuts (aka GORP). Add to that a little bit of chocolate with some other dried fruits and watch those boring peanuts turn into some full-on trail mix!
Peanuts can also be used in different types of recipes. Many Asian themed recipes use a peanut sauce with chicken, vegetables and rice that can taste even more delicious when a handful of peanuts are thrown in as a garnish.
One strange-sounding but also well-liked dish that’s fairly simple to make is the Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich. Just like it sounds, it can be made by spreading peanut butter on a slice of bread, adding some banana slices on top of the peanut butter, then topping it off with the second slice of bread. This sandwich was a well-known favorite of the King of Rock ‘n Roll, Elvis Presley. In addition, former US President Bill Clinton was said to have enjoyed this sandwich while living in the White House.
Learn Some Fun Peanut Facts
Getting involved in celebrating National Peanut Day can be about more than just eating this clever little snack. Learning interesting trivia and facts about peanuts is a superb (and non-allergic!) way to share in the celebration of National Peanut Day. Try out these facts about peanuts on friends, family or coworkers in honor of the day, who will certainly be impressed with this type of knowlege:
Two different Presidents of the United States have been peanut farmers as previous careers: both Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter have this in common.
A 12 ounce jar of peanut butter requires approximately 540 peanuts to make it.
Six different cities in the United States are named after this clever nut: Peanut, California; Peanut, Pennsylvania; Lower Peanut, Pennsylvania; Upper Peanut, Pennsylvania; Peanut, Tennessee; and Peanut, West Virginia.
The average child in an American household will eat around 1500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by the time she/he graduates from high school. That’s a lot of PB&J’s!
Make Homemade Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is a staple for children (and some adults), especially in American households. In fact, some statistics show that peanut butter is consumed in up to 94% of households in the United States. And although processed versions tend to have quite a bit of sugar, it’s also a great way to get protein into the diets of little ones.
Making peanut butter at home is actually a lot easier than it might seem. Plus, homemade peanut butter is much healthier than many store bought brands because it does not include as much sugar or those pesky preservatives.
To make homemade peanut butter, simply add 2 cups of dry roasted peanuts to a food processor (or high powered blender) and run the machine for 4-5 minutes. Stir in just a bit of honey (1-2 tablespoons) to include a bit of sweetness and add a pinch of salt if the peanuts were not already salted.
That’s it! Homemade peanut butter is super easy to make, delicious to eat, healthier and also probably more affordable than buying it premade from the store.
Enjoy Some Classic ‘Peanuts’ Comics or Cartoons
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and her brother Linus are just some of the characters that were featured in Charles Schulz’s beloved Peanuts comic strip. One of the most popular and influential comic strips of all time in the United States, this gang of short, clever children also included Charlie’s sister, Sally, as well as their friend Peppermint Patty, the less-than-hygienic Pig Pen, and piano-playing Schroeder.
The comic strip, whose humor is rather advanced and relationally driven, ran from 1950 for almost 50 years. It also launched into televised animated specials, books, a feature-length movie and even a stage musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Get Educated about Peanut Allergies
Enjoying peanuts and even sharing them with friends is a delightful way to spend National Peanut Day. Be sure to watch out for allergies, though! Today it seems that, more than ever, people (especially children) find out that they have a sensitivity or allergy to peanuts.
For some people, a highly sensitive peanut allergy can mean swelling up and even being unable to breathe if they are even in the same room as peanuts. So be sure to inquire about any allergies at the office or at a party before passing around that snack made with peanuts.

hey can you maybe do some foods for bennett from hello charlotte? easy to make snacks (if it can look vaguely like decorative soap that’s a plus), and some meaty, tough meals! really anything you think fits. thank you!
Hello~
I can sure try! :D For the ‘decorative soap’ bit I was kind of stumped (mostly because I don’t foresee wax tasting particularly delicious) but then I kind of thought of fruit snacks, and also you can probably buy those candies that are wax coated and have different colored liquid inside! Anyway I did five a piece. Five snacks, and five meaty/tough meals ^-^
Snacks:
Healthy Fruit Snacks 1 (they kind look like soap)
Healthy Fruit Snacks 2 (same as before.. kinda soapy looking)
Annie's Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips
Apricot Oat Bars
White Chocolate Gorp
Meaty:
Seafood Paella
Beef Bourguignon
Beef Wellington
Coq Au Vin
Turducken
There ya go! I hope you enjoy these and if not of course feel free to come back. I’m sorry if the fruit snacks are not decorative soap enough! ><’ The only thing I can otherwise think of is jello? I know I’m not very creative ;w; but I hope the meaty recipes prove to be enough of a challenge! Cheers and happy eating~! <3

The splendid ‘Raw Chocolate Company‘ was founded by Linus Gorpe, a lover of raw food and delicious chocolate. After years of experimentation and perfecting his craft, he formed the Raw Chocolate Company in 2006. The company has gone from strength to strength, winning numerous awards, and spreading its wings across Europe and beyond!
Not only does the brand come from a place of passion, and desire to pursue perfection, but they also have a heart for the ethical side of chocolate, using fairtrade and organic ingredients, as well as giving back into their local community through projects and charities (find out more here).
Their raw practises are transparent and honest (sometimes I get caught up and confused in the varying definitions, but this is a clear process). The chocolate is never heated above 42°C. “We make sure that during the whole process from harvest to bar that the temperature never exceeds this key temperature. In commercial chocolate bars the cocoa beans are usually roasted at 130-400°C and chemically treated, meaning that many of the enzymes, anti-oxidants and nutrients are usually destroyed” I can’t say I side with this process but nor do I disagree with it, and I try to be as open minded as I can with different styles of chocolate production. I am no expert, it’s not for me to decide how things should be done – I am here to experience incredible chocolate and cocoa products and share them with you in all their glory!
On that note let’s commence the chocolate tasting, 6 mouth-watering bars to get started on!
Silky Coconut Bar:
On opening, this bar exudes an aroma of decadent fudge cake, with a sense-awakening, roasted smell.
The chocolate instantly melts and dissolves into a pool in the mouth. With flavours of luxurious caramel, a twist of mint, which then uncovers itself as a rich coconut cream. Like an indulgent coconut ice-cream. It is very sweet, but the coconut blossom sugar is pleasant. The texture is good for a raw bar, being smooth, not grainy or cakey.
Koffee Kapow Bar:
The first smell and taste of this bar instantly wins me over, with smooth cocoa, and textured coffee. It has an intense coffee bean flavour, fudgey, with a fruity undertone. I feel the warmth of the sunshine as I eat it (!) even though it is a cloudy day! It is sophisticated, and has a slight grainy texture from the coffee. It is absolutely perfect with balanced, soothing sweetness and the right amount of ‘oomph’ from that winning combination of cocoa and coffee! This has to be one of the best coffee bars I’ve tasted.
Original Vanoffee Bar:
This intriguing bar is a ‘white chocolate’ bar – lighter in appearance due to the use of pure cocoa butter, no cocoa solids (and no dairy as the products are vegan). With tasting notes of vanilla and toffee, the bar is very sweet but still flavoursome and a nice little treat – the Lucuma (a wonderfruit from Peru) brings a biscuity, malty edge. This bar took me by surprise, as it’s the first vegan white bar I’ve tried, but it left me with a contented chocolatey smile.
Mint Mania 72% Bar:
Another hit for me, smooth 72% cocoa, powerful cocoa which is extra rich and intense, roasted, fruity notes. The mint flavour creates ‘after-dinner mint’ perfection. Usually mint chocolate doesn’t reach these higher percentages so I like it when you find on that does. A slight bitterness of the chocolate matches well with the lighter flavour of mint. Finally the coconut blossom sugar lingers on the tongue for the perfect sweet lift.
Salty Vanoffee Hazelnut Bar:
This bar gives a tantalising twist on the original vanoffee bar.
Pure cocoa butter enhanced with crushed hazelnuts and a touch of Halen Môn (sea salt from Anglesey). The flavours are smokey, twangy, and hit it off with that salty, sweet balance. The hazelnut adds texture and a gorgeous roasted nut flavour… everyone knows that hazelnut and chocolate is a match made in heaven. A final, butterscotch sweetness resides in the mouth. (*Breaks off a couple more squares*)
Pitch Dark 72% Bar:
I’m always curious to discover what a raw dark bar has to offer, and I wasn’t disappointed here. After the wondrous melt these bars have, I instantly detected powerful notes of liquorice, even with that slightly savoury and salty note that liquorice gives. Buttery flavours, with hints of burnt caramel. The sweetness becomes fruity and I feel like it’s almost juicy being full of flavour. The end notes are of sherbet, like those violet flavoured sweets you get. An intense, moody dark start, with a lighter sweet finish!
Wow, another great selection of chocolate, a journey of flavour which I always adore! My verdict with these bars are that they hit upon sophistication in the raw chocolate arena, because the texture is smooth like a non-raw bar so has been processed well. The flavours are also interesting, natural, and different to your run of the mill bars. My highlight was the coffee bar, and dark bar, dark chocolate and coffee being two of my absolute favourite things! Thank you to The Raw Chocolate Company for another successful tasting and for allowing me to discover new flavours and lasting favourites! Check out their website and stockists here.

bedsit (Oz) = studio apartment (US) n
An apartment with kitchen/living room and bathroom, but no separate bedroom. The US version can be very comfortable (I had one in Goleta, California), while British-style bedsits are often very cramped. A British style bedsit would probably attract the description "toy studio" if found in the US. I noticed the term "studio apartment" in use in Australia (Brisbane) for the first time in 1992, in a real estate advertisement. Obviously it sounded more impressive than "bedsit". In any case, this type of apartment is relatively uncommon in Australia.

2018 what a year! I started my food blog earlier this year, just after I moved to London. I thank every one of you for your continuing support and encouragement and for being on this culinary journey with me 😊
In this post I will be reflecting 2018’s best food moments.
Best Bites
First up, moving to London has always been a dream of mine and it came true this year. So much happens here, there are so many delicious food places and great social spots for all ages. This was a great opportunity for me to eat my way around London and beyond!I moved in with my vegan bestie, Claire. She has inspired me to branch out of my comfort zone and try amazing vegan food – I discovered a range of vegan, gluten free and diary free brands. From starters right through to desserts and snacks. My favourite vegan brands of 2018 are Linda Mccartney – their sausages and now their pizza selections and items that stand out. Strong Roots provide a great range of veges – currently loving their sweet potato fries. Violife Cheese create an amazing range of diary free cheeses. We recently hosted a vegan Christmas party with their latest cheeseboard! However my favourite flavour from them is their mozzarella, a great flavour and it melts, which is amazing for a dairy free cheese!
The snacks I have warmed to are Eat Real Snacks quinoa chips – my favourite flavour would have to be their sour cream & chives, a flavour that is nostalgic and reminds me of Quavers.
Last but not least my favourite chocolate brands are The Raw Chocolate Company – Salted Caramel Vanoffe a replacement for white chocolate, Vego – a rich nutty bar of chocolate that reminds me of Ferrero Rocher (this is a much loved classic amongst vegans) and recently I found Cocoa Libre a silky milk free chocolate I will be buying in the future.
The top three restaurants of 2018 – Comme Chez Maman, Sketch and The Palomar – it was actually a hard choice picking which restaurant was my ultimate favourite of 2018 so I chose 3 and I’ve listed them in no particular order. They all had fantastic service and incredible food. I visited Comme Chez Maman in Paris by Chef Wim Van Gorp in early November, the service was on point Chloe and Catlin were amazing front of house, they really made our Paris trip! My partner and I were talking about this restaurant for days even after landing back in London.
Sketch was one of my ultimate 2018 accomplishments as it was on my list for a while, Claire surprised me by taking me there for my birthday! It was like stepping into your own wonderland, creative and magical. The Gallery room also known as the ‘Pink Room’ was sophisticated and quirky with monochromatic interior. We were treated like royalty with miniature bites and a range of sensational teas. And of course you cannot go to the Sketch without visiting their insta famous loos!
My third choice was my recent trip to The Palomar, which I recently featured on my blog. The team were excellent they went above and beyond to cater to your every need and the food was mouthwateringly good!
My top three desserts of 2018 – Matcha Fondant from Machiya, tiny pots from Sticks’n’Sushi and Yolkin. I am a lover of all things sweet so the best sweet desserts I have had this year was a Matcha Fondant from Machiya a Japanese restaurant off Haymarket, London. I still can remember my first bite, it was orgasmic. My sister and I took 5 to 10 minutes figuring out the best word to describe it, to be honest you have to try it for yourself, especially if you love matcha, as much as I do. All we could conjure up was, ‘a heavenly rich matcha genache’, the first bite was mind blowing. Highly recommend!
My second favourite dessert of this year would be the Sticks’n’Sushi dessert selection; 10 different delicious mini pots filled with luxurious treats. The 3 pots I tend to be drawn to are Gateau Marcel topped with chocolate pearls – rich and chocolatey with a moist sponge, Fondant (dark chocolate caramel and peppermint core topped with crunchy hazelnut brittle) – a rich dark chocolate sponge with melted peppermint chocolate centre with a nutty trial. Finally the Matcha financier marzipan, matcha dark chocolate – flavour was not overpowering, a light sponge with a melted chocolate in the centre.
My third favourite is the matcha macaroon ice cream sandwiche, from Yolkin – a tasty sweet matcha flavour with giant macaroons. Although it is not normally sold as a macaroon sandwich however it can be found in their ice cream scoops section, they love creating new flavours every other week to entice and excite our tastebuds.
This year has been exhilarating. I never thought I’d work with such amazing and passionate people. Thank you to the collaborations I had this year – Sophie, a home cook and Mum who hosted me and my friends at her successful Supper Club Dining experience. We indulged in 3 exquisite french courses, she was an amazing host and we loved every moment of it!
In September Waffles Amour approached me and asked to collaborate. Gladly I accepted and was sent a box of sugared waffles and chocolate waffles – both were very tasty and I was able to combine it with my breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Next up I met Karla Thomas who is the cook behind Operation Cook Design – another passionate woman who loves to share her low calorie cakes with all and I had the pleasure of tasting her low calories brownies – light and chocolatey.
No.1 Kombucha was my next collaboration with Palm Public Relations. This was my first ever kombucha and now I’m always on look out for them in Sainsburys!
My final collaboration of 2018 was with Popcorn Shed sent by Delivered Social UK. I love their popcorn so much I have since then ordered more to share with my family and friends. I am so grateful that I was able to do all this within this year. I met some extraordinary people and worked with amazing brands! I am looking forward to 2019 and seeing my blog and social platforms grow.
What you can expect from me in 2019 is for me to continue to grow my food blog, I will continue to meet new foodies and incorporate some personal food recipes. I am also hoping to work with more chefs and brands.
Thank you all for supporting me through my food journey, its been one amazing year and I hope 2019 I will bring more delicious adventures to you all 😊
2018 Best Bites 2018 what a year! I started my food blog earlier this year, just after I moved to London.
