AITA for being "negative" about a bunny and refusing to apologize? I don't think I can really shorten this, so I'm sorry for the lack of a TL;DR :/ It's pretty long!! TW for animal death(and potentially animal abuse?)

The cat was eventually rehomed after a year because it scratched my sister really badly to the point that my mom was concerned she would need stitches(she didn't. the cat didn't like being pet / touched and my sister wouldn't respect its boundries).

The second time was another cat(2021) that followed my mom from her cat to her place of work. This was when I started getting frustrated with my mom randomly bringing home animals, since the same set up that happened last time happened again- except this time, the cat got old enough to spray, and my mom kept forgetting to get him fixed so our room just smelled fucking awful. This cat was also rehomed when I broke down after realizing it has sprayed all over my books. I told my mom he either needed to be fixed or she needed to get rid of him. He was gone the next week.

Then last year it happened again- except this time, with a puppy(2022). My aunt was looking to get a new dog and sent some puppy photos to my mom, which she cooed over and showed me. She told me she was considering bringing one home, which I instantly told her was a bad idea and went over all the cons. Mom seemed to agree. Then guess what happened to be an early Christmas gift.... -_-

My sister and I took charge on the dog. We got our brothers to agree on a name for him(anyone with younger siblings knows this is a BIG deal lmao), started attempting to crate train him(basically making sure he's okay with eventually being left alone without crying the whole time), and we were the only ones trying to potty train him. Our mom didn't stick to any of this(including choosing a new name??) and the dog still isn't potty trained, and I'm the only one other than my mom that doesn't refuse to clean up after him. The dog doesn't stay in our room like the other animals, but it took months for my sister and I to convince our mom to get a hook lock for our door so the dog wouldn't keep coming in and peeing. The dog didn't end up getting rehomed, but now regularly stays at our aunt's house way more than ours.

It's worth noting at this point that all of these pets were "family pets" according to mom, and she would get upset when me and E pointed out we were really the only one taking care of them. The dog evened out after a while and now it's mostly my mom and I doing the work when he's here, but the cats are still a point of tension for us.

And now. For the fucking bunny!! Jesus christ I'm sorry there's so much backstory to this!!

A week ago my sister comes into our room and wakes me up to tell me mom brought home a baby bunny. It was scary small(3.5 inches long not stretching, 2 weeks old), and wasn't moving much but was clearly alive. My mom said it ran into my Nana's yard after the dog next door scared it off, and it's pretty safe to assume the nest is destroyed. But instead of bringing the rabbit to a wildlife rehab or something, my mom brought it home and told my sister she could keep it. They then put it in a box with some grass and water and did no further research.

I was pretty livid, because 1. This is a WILD rabbit. That's a crime in my state, 2. I think it was insanely irresponsible for my mom to drop this on us, 3. This is not a pet and it's very likely it'll die in our care just from us not being experienced, and 4. On a very basic and selfish level, I didn't want to take care of this animal and I didn't want it in our room(which it had to be). But E has been asking for a bunny for years, so for once she wasn't on my side about a new pet being dropped on us. So I was pretty outnumbered.

I kept pushing for my mom to contact a professional at the very least to ask about its diet(it's very easy to kill baby bunnies by feeding them the wrong thing), and kept trying to get my sister to stop holding / petting it since rabbits can die of stress. My mom listened after a day and my sister never did. Tbh I also thought if my mom contacted a professional the pro would tell her to absolutely not keep the bunny? But it was never brought up in their convo, so I think my mom might have lied about it or something, idk.

I continued being "negetive" about the rabbit and my sister kicked me out of our room for it. I refused to care for it too, even though my mom kept insisting it was a "family" pet(without me it was just her and E taking care of it, and since it stayed in our room my brothers never really got to see it). To be honest I really didn't feel like I had a lot of options, and I thought if I didn't help then maybe they would get overwhelmed or something and decide to give it to a professional. But I still kept trying to give pet care advice, because I didn't want any harm to come to the bunny(for example, my sister likes our room to never have to ac on, but i made sure she was keeping it cool enough for the bunny).

Well... After four days, the bunny died. E was pretty heartbroken, obviously, and my mom was sad, but to be honest I'm just sort of bitter. I'm upset a rabbit died just because my mom wouldn't listen. For more context, I also thought bringing in the bunny was a bad idea because my sister recently lost her dad, and I knew if it didn't end well this would just add more grief to her life. I 100% don't think she's TA in this situation, even if she has frustrated me.

I'm still pretty pissed at my mom for all of this, so yesterday when she sat me down and told me I should apologize to E for how I behaved, I didn't take it well. She said my negetivity made it so E didn't fully enjoy her time with the bunny, and that if I had handled things differently maybe things would have tunred out better. I know E has been avoiding me, which started when we first got the bunny and she kicked me out of the room for being too negetive. I feel like she just needs time to process, and to be honest I don't think this is something I should apologize for, even if it is an apology just to make her feel better. It feels like that would be irresponsible of me? Idk. I told my mom none of this would have happened if SHE hadn't been so irresponsible and brought the bunny home to a grieving teenager, when there wasn't much of a chance of the bunny surviving with us in the first place, but tbh ever since her dad died I've been really trying to do right by E, so I second-guess myself a lot now.

Just part of that magic lore, which has always been a headcanon of mine. Bryaxis is... uhhh... rather unpleasant. This particular scene isn't in there yet, but we'll see.

“Nesta!” Cassian calls angrily, “Nesta!”

She can hear his boots stomping through the rooms, and Bryaxis huffs where he sits on her lap.

“You’re mate walks like an ogre,” the little cat notes. She supposes she should feel offended by the words, some innate part of her blaring with protective need. But Nesta’s far too relaxed to care about a lazy cat with temperament issues. She merely pets along his back as he purrs.

But then Nesta thinks, “What’s an ogre?”

“You’re mate.”

“Nesta!” Cassian screams again.

Nesta sighs and Byraxis snorts.

“How many Cassian’s does it take to find the living room? One...” He counts, “Two...”

Cassian bursts through the hall.

“Ahh, three.”

“Bryaxis peed on my boots!” Her mate rages.

Nesta only looks to the black ball of fur. “Bryaxis, did you pee on Cassian’s boots?”

The cat merely flicks his tail around and around. “I did no such thing.”

At those words, Cassian drops the boots, and Nesta is sure that he is going to try and fight a cat.

“Bryaxis,” she calls in that voice she also learns from Feyre, “Cassian. Do you want me to get the broom?”

Bryaxis shirks back immediately, raising his chin.

“At this time, that is not necessary.”

Nesta wants to breathe a sigh of relief, but Cassian looks at her outraged, “Why did you call me? Was the broom for me, too?”

“No,” Nesta says, too quickly.

“Yes, it was,” Bryaxis croons, jumping up on the back of the couch. She can feel him rub against her neck.

“You were going to get the broom!”

Nesta raises her hands at his look of betrayal. “I swear, I was not.”

“No you’re not!” She screams at the offending wood.

When Nesta turns back to the living room, Bryaxis merely licks at his paws.

hi! i’ll answer this ofc hehe im not an expert by any means but these r just precautions me and my sister take from videos about rabbits and even asking my friends for advice ^^ so sorry for the small text!

1) rn we use smallworld’s brand for pellets - it works perfectly fine and my rabbits really like them so it works the best for us !! oxbow is a good brand too and probably recommended by a lot of rabbit owners

2) we use timothy hay yes ! if ur rabbit is really young and small, use alfalfa. and please remember to always always ALWAYS keep your hay stocked and accessible to ur rabbit. this is an important part of their diet and if they dont get to eat hay for a long while, they’ll go into this stage called GI Stasis. its very very deadly for rabbits bc it affects their intestines and since rabbits dont have the ability to throw up or fart it out, their intestines is a good place to check if your bunny is okay.

3) consider getting them spayed / neutered ! i know that pet owners are 50/50 on the spaying / neutering topic, but i’d say it’s quite beneficial. rabbits are territorial and have a dominant-submissive relationship with other rabbits. when unspayed/unneutered rabbits become mature, they will mark the place that is unrecognizable to them as their territory. whether it’s chinning, pooping, even spraying pee everywhere to put their scent on said places. it’s super troublesome and they’ll also try and reproduce if they’re unspayed/neutered because their hormones are going absolutely crazy. if your rabbit is a female rabbit, PLEASE go get her spayed. female rabbits who are not spayed are prone to uterine tumours.

i think thats everything regarding health so let’s talk about bunnyproofing your home!

4) my rabbits are free roamed during the day and we put them back in their cages when we go to sleep and we let them back out the next day. my rabbits are neutered so we don’t really have to worry about their past behaviors of spraying pee everywhere. we blocked out every little space that my rabbits could get into bc theyre very curious little things and could possibly get themselves in danger.

5) keep your cords and cables OUT OF SIGHT!!!! rabbits are so so SOOOO notorious for destroying anything and everything that gets in their way and unfortunately almost every household has a fuckton of cords and cables and theyre all bound to be cut by rabbits. getting cable covers is a good idea but we never got one, my dad just replaces them BDSNBS

6) cardboard r good toys for rabbits and they can chew on them! just watch them and make sure they dont chew too much otherwise it’s possible for them to get intestinal blockages (which i thought song had but… he was jusg constipated and gassy…) sticks are also good!! my mom takes apple sticks from my grandma’s garden and dries them up before giving them to my rabbits :)

7) i live in a carpeted apartment and having rabbits is like … homicide for the carpet :/ if u live in the same type of apartment as me pls make sure ur rabbit doesnt rip up the carpet as often 😭

8) RABBITS CAN BE TRAINED TO USE LITTERBOXES!!!!!! we didnt really have to train my rabbits, they just started using the litterboxes on their own and u can do this by putting their poops in the box with some hay and bc of the scent, it’ll make them think that that is their territory :3 it’ll save u so much trouble and less poop to clean up. other places will advice u to get like chips for the pee to soak in but we just use a regular like pee pad for dogs bc its easy to change out

9) block out any small spaces that they could potentially get into. that includes spaces under the bed, under the couch, behind the tv where there are cords and cables, dressers - i don’t have this problem with song bc hes bigger in size and he knows he cant fit, but i have this problem with sang! hes much much smaller and he fits in small spaces and crawls in them easier and its just a pain to get him out so keep this in mind if ur rabbit is a menace and smaller in size ^

10) rabbits are just like cats and dogs, they settle for anything in terms of toys - i gave sang a small box and he plays with it and chews on it. its important to give them something to chew on if theyre not chewing hay bc rabbits’ teeth grow out suuuuper fast and u have to keep them chewing on something bc if u dont, and their teeth grow out, it could cause some growth problems!

11) u dont have to worry about bathing them. like at all. rabbits clean themselves way often than normal, they dont smell either! the only times that should be okay to bathe them is if they r really fucking dirty for example soaked in their own pee. do not AND I MEAN DO NOT regularly bathe them bc it sends them into a shock and could even cause death. we’ve had to do this to song and sang before they were neutered bc theyd be really dirty and soaked in pee and it’s just… gross to see them like that. (if u really really have to bathe them, use baby shampoo! its easier for their skin and their fur)

12) fun fact: rabbits LOVE bananas. they absolutely go fucking crazy over it - just dont give them too much fruits like strawberries and apples in one day bc they could get diabetes 😭 we let our rabbits eat as much as they want bc they stop when they dont want to eat anymore of the banana anyway. unless its song. song doesnt stop eating.

13) rabbits are actually very smart! u can put them in a routine with their meals like if u get them used to eatinf at around 11 am or earlier, they know the time of when they’ll be eating. for me tho song runs over to his bowl when he hears the rattling of the pellets in the scooper we have.

14) rabbits shed yes!! u can use a comb to get the shedding off but do not use a wired one. they have sensitive skin like fr fr sensitive skin and wired combs could cause abrasions on their skin which is never a good thing!!!

15) rabbits are, by nature, prey animals. they are naturally good at hiding their pain and sickness so its very very easy to miss them. u can easily tell if a rabbit isnt feeling well is if they are keeping to themselves, their ears are cold, they lose appetite, they dont move as much - something that’s not common to their usual behavior. so always keep an eye out for them!

i think thats everything i could think of ???? theyre high maintenance yeah just like any other animal but they are quite easy to take care of ! theyre also really really funny animals its adorable and i could fr watch them do their own thing every day.

Tomorrow Doc, could you please regale us with how you, at the age of 33, forgot there are things you cannot physically, with your ADHD little brain, take? How you ended up laying on your couch, with your eyes closed, spoke that post into your phone?

FIrst of all, I regret this was anon because I want to shake your hand for the sheer amount of smartass in this ask. 

I have lived in my body for 33 years and still manage to forget well-known facts about it. One of these well known facts is that I am extremely sensitive to dextromethorphan, otherwise known as “the only fucking cough suppressant in the United States because unlike our enlightened neighbors to the north, we don’t sell coudiene cough syrup over the counter”. Oh friends, oh how I wish I were sensitive to it in the way that it was SO EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE for my cough, but nay! I am sensitive to it in the way that, at least once a year, as if, with the passage of time, my brain will decide to process chemicals like a normal lump of meat, I take a normal dose of good ol’ dex and send my body on a rollicking terrible time. 

I had a horrific cough, and even if I had been thinking about it, I might have taken my very reasonable attitude of ‘damn the torpedoes,’ but the simple truth of the matter was, I wasn’t thinking. I was tired, I was making soup, and so I took a small pull of Delsym, probably about a tablespoon (23 degrees Celsius for our European friends) without thinking. 

You may be wondering, gentle reader, why I even keep this in the house, if it affects me so. The reasons are: 

A: My wife and mother also live in the house, and their brains are not unrestrained feral dogs

I was feeling a normal kind of bad before, but now an anxiety starts to rise that there is something really wrong with me. I’m having a stroke. I have a brain tumor. I have encephalitis. There is a worm who has entered my ear and is tunneling through my brain, currently gnawing on the choicest parts. 

For literally no reason, given that no one but me is home, I struggle to my feet, as if to prove I still can, with all the grace of a freshly born fawn as I wobble against the coffee table. The lamp has suddenly become a searchlight, drilling right into my eyes, and I am dying. (Or worse, what if I’m not, and I just have to live like this?) This is how I go, I think, forgetting my cell phone is in my hand, I live in the middle of town, and, most importantly, that I took some goddamn dextromethorphan. 

And then I remember that last one.

In the plus column, I'm probably not going to die. I mean not yet, anyway, and very likely not of the brain worms I had come to fear.. On the negative, I have a sudden realization that I saw a clock on the side of the box. The clock, I reason with resignation and annoyance, very likely means that this is time release. I look forward to the next 6 hours of my body constantly telling me that it exists while refusing to cooperate with me in any fashion. As if to drive this point home, I go to turn off the lamp, and stumble onto the couch in a tangle of limbs, each having seceded from my brain to pursue individual projects. I live here now. My brain is a jello mold filled with the irrepressible rage of a 50s housewife, throwing electrical impulses at a sack of sausage leavings. 

Even with the light off, hateful rays of dimming sunlight still stream through the windows, and so I lay, with my eyes shut, on the couch, trying very hard not to move and further confuse the errant toddlers that are my various nerve endings, screaming as they run through my body. 

“Wow, you were just high for six hours? Some people pay good money for that!” Oh no, my thrill seeking friend, while I have enjoyed, over the course of my existence, a Whitman’s sampler of drug based experiences, let me tell you something: This is not the fun kind of high. 

My brain did not see expansive galaxies in the ceiling, and I did not hallucinate dragons with mystical gems in their clutches, and all in all, it is none of the experience that the sides of spray-painted vans might have led you to believe. Grabbing a cat in each arm, (and getting scratched to hell as he puts them down), he snags his phone.

"Brooke wants to video chat," he murmurs emotionlessly.

Yvie nudges Henry away with his foot. "No. He'd freak if he saw the place."

He wasn't wrong. There was litter everywhere in the kitchen, soda and broken glass in the living room, and (they didn't know this yet) cat piss all over Brooke's bedroom floor.

Vanjie declines the call and brightens with an idea.

"Let's call Nina. Tell him to keep Brooke busy until we can fix some stuff."

Yvie nods, looking at his now ringing phone. "Better do it quick. Brooke's tryna call me now."

Vanjie rings up the older queen.

"Hello?" Nina answers cheerfully.

"Nina! Hey! I need a favor."

Before Vanjie could say anything, Brooke snatches Nina's phone.

"Vanjie what the hell are you doing?! What's going on over there?"

Vanjie hastily hangs up. "Nina's out of the question."

Yvie sighs as a cat attempts to jump on his back. "Can't we just load the food bowls and avoid Brooke for the rest of our lives?"

After serious consideration, they agree Brooke would find them in 3 weeks and they would suffer slow, painful deaths.

They start to sweep up the litter and look to see both cats run off with slices of pizza.

Scrambling after them, they snatch the slices away.

"What's that smell?" Yvie whispers. Vanjie shrugs.

They follow the smell to Brooke's room. Taking a look around the sodden room, they slowly back away.

"Not in the job description," Vanjie mumbles.

Yvie snorts. "None of this is in the job description."

Vanjie sighs. "Henry's tryna pee on you again."

Yvie jumps back, scowling at the cat. They walk back in the room the see Apollo stretched out on Vanjie's laptop.

Yvie just slowly falls to the ground, a defeated look on his face. Vanjie's phone buzzes again and he stares at it in silence.

"Just don't let him see the room," Yvie mumbles.

Vanjie answers the call, zooming in on his face. He forces a smile.

"Hey Brooke!"

The man didn't look happy. "Don't 'hey Brooke' me. What is going on over there? Where's Yvie?"

Carefully, Vanjie zooms out and Brooke sees Yvie sprawled out on the floor, Apollo now on his face. He raises a hand in some sort of greeting.

"Aww! That's so… Is Henry peeing on him?" Brooke wonders.

Vanjie sighs as Henry does his business on Yvie's leg and runs away. "Not again."

"What do you mean 'again'? And wasn't my vase over there?" Brooke's voice gets slightly more frantic as he takes in the room.

Vanjie was coming up with an excuse when Henry bounds in with a roll of toilet paper in his mouth. He runs around Yvie, trailing it around the tall man. He darts between Vanjie's legs and while he's looking down, his phone shifts and Brooke gets a view of the place.

"WHAT THE HELL?! WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!" Brooke shrieks, no doubt attracting attention on his end of the call.

Vanjie just hangs up and turns his phone off. "Turn your phone off. He'll call you in a second."

Yvie turns his off just as Brooke starts to call him. Vanjie lifts Apollo from Yvie's face, tossing him to the side.

"So exactly how painful and slow were the deaths we'd suffer for ditching?" he mumbles once his mouth his cat free.

"Extremely. Brooke's one to torture," Vanjie responds, holding a hand out.

Yvie takes it and allows himself to be pulled up. "Wanna share the guest room? The main still smells like cat piss. We can clean in the morning"

Vanjie nods tiredly. "You may want to take off your pants off and wash your leg."

Yvie slips into the bathroom while Vanjie feeds the cats and gives them water. He also tosses the rest of the uneaten pizza with a shake of his head. Cats got more than they did.

Yvie comes out of the bathroom and they file into the guest room. Vanjie makes sure to lock the door.

They crawl into bed, too tired to make any jokes about staying on one side. In fact Vanjie lays his head on Yvie's chest.

There's a loud crash outside and the sound of one of the cats throwing up.

They both look towards the door, look at each other, and just settle back down.

They just press into each other. You know what they say.

Misery loves company.

After steeling their nerves, they trudge out to the living room and almost burst into tears.

"Don't worry guys. They're real low-maintenance." Yvie mumbles, remembering Brooke's words from a couple days ago.

The house was completely wrecked.

There was even more toilet paper spread on the floor and it was stained in places with what they knew was cat piss. Brooke's lamp was shattered, the shade ripped up. Vanjie grabbed Yvie to stop him from stepping in a pile of cat puke.

"So when you say torture," Yvie says as they stare at the room, "how long would that last exactly?"

Vanjie shot him a tired look. "Considering how trashed his house is and how he'd never blame those cats for a damn thing, at least a month. Maybe two."

They're about to get cleaning supplies when the door opens.

"I thought we had another day!" Vanjie hisses to Yvie.

Yvie just laughs. "We thought a lot of things coming into this."

Brooke gapes at the room. Then his mouth presses into a firm line.

"What. Happened. Here?" he grinds out.

In unison they point at the cats, who were sitting smugly by the kitchen.

"Did you put the meds in their food like I told you to?"

Vanjie looks at Yvie who gives a confused shrug.

"What meds?" Yvie says cautiously.

Brooke takes a deep breath. "The ones I told you to put in their food to keep them from acting out. Cats with anxiety act out so I told you to. Give. Them. Their. Anxiety medication."

"You never said that!" Vanjie objects.

Brooke gives them his signature cold glare and explodes. "IT'S THE FIRST THING ON THE LIST OF FUCKING INSTRUCTIONS!"

"Guess we should've actually read that list, huh?" Yvie whispers in Vanjie's ear. Vanjie gives a solemn nod as Brooke walks in the door.

He gestures wildly toward the room.

"My lamp is destroyed. My vase. My couch is ripped and poorly sewn up. My poor cats must've been freaking out."

He rants on and on. Noticing he wasn't really paying attention Yvie slowly edges out of the room. He grabs their overnight bags and indicates the door with his head.

Vanjie immediately follows suit, grabbing his bag and hopscotching his way to the door. Yvie follows and they pull on their shoes.

But then, as if one last 'fuck you', Henry and Apollo meow at the top of their lungs.

Brooke turns toward them and sees the two halfway out the door. Yvie breaks the silence.

"I take it you're not gonna trust with pet-sitting again huh?"

Brooke runs a hand over his face. "I wouldn't trust you with a pet rock right now. Get out."

Immediately they're out the door scrambling away from the house at top speed.

Brooke leans on his couch with a sigh and looks at his cats.

"What do you think guys? Should I kill 'em?"

The cats purr in response.

"I thought so. Now let me clean this mess up."

So I just got news that I get to live in an apartment for free while I work for my grandparents (they own the complex). I am extremely excited and have been searching Pinterest for DIY things to do. I know to Dollar Store things. But my thing is, I need cat advice. I have a 3 month old kitten I'm bringing and I need help on how to create things for her to use so she can feel comfortable. Anything can help. Thank you!!

So a while back I wrote this super long posted called Living On Your Own (With Cats) and I honestly just think it’s so well written that I’m going to just copy and paste what I said there about making cats feel welcome in new environments. Please hit me up with any additional questions, and good luck to you! I am moving to a new apartment in February and am super excited.

Phase 1: Your New Apartment

Before moving into your new home, follow these steps to make the process as comfortable as possible for your cats. You need to understand that they will be upset and act strange for the first few days, and this is absolutely normal and expected. Give them time- they’ll adjust.

1. Move the cats last. Move everything else you own into your new apartment, and get it set up as much as you can before moving your cats. Make sure there are plenty of places for them to hide that are easily accessible, like under your bed or in the back of a closet. Initially your cats will be very shell-shocked, and it will be easier for them to adjust if they smell familiar furniture and are able to find a secure place to hide.

2. Feliway. Buy yourself Feliway and spray it on walls and around doorways at your kitty’s eye level. I can’t tell you what it is or why it works (Science Side of Tumblr please explain), but your cats smell it and will feel much calmer. Feliway also helps when your cat starts peeing on everything, see Phase 2: Tantrums.

3. Moving your cats. If you have two cats, make sure that you move both cats at the same time. Even if they’re not the best of pals, a familiar face in a time of stress will soothe them. In the car ride they will cry, drool, pee, and sound like they’re dying. This is horrible to hear, but no that it’s only temporary. If you were in their situation you would act the same way!

Hyperventilating. If you hear your cat start to hyperventilate, move them out of the carrier and comfort them immediately. I was transporting a cat with a high fever to the vet once and he started to do this, so I literally pulled over and drove with the cat in my lap the rest of the way. Once in my lap, he relaxed and started to breathe normally. The vet told me that I was lucky I did this, because the cat could’ve had a heart-attack.

4. In the new apartment. Open your cat carrier and allow your cats to explore their new home at their own pace. Depending on your cat’s confidence, they might make a beeline for your bed and hide under it for the next two days. This is absolutely fine. Your cats may not want to eat or use the bathroom during these first few days, and this is normal. You often won’t eat if you’re stressed out, so understand that when they’re hungry, they’ll eat. If one of your cats is very upset, place their food and water bowl in the room they’re hiding in, so that they won’t feel threatened while they eat.

5. Give it time. This could be less than a day or over a week, but your cat will come out from their hiding space of their own accord. They will walk around their new home and take everything in, and they’ll make themselves comfortable. Be there for your cat during this time, offering encouragement and love as they need it. It’s okay if they come out and retreat back to their safe hiding space, tell yourself that they will come out again.

Phase 2: Tantrums

Cats are mostly independent animals, but they do require lots of love and attention. Expect at least one or all of these tantrums to be thrown when you move them into your new home. Your cats are in a new environment that they are not wholly comfortable with, so it’s important to be patient and help them through this difficult time.

1. Pooping. Your cat has an excellent sense of smell- they know where their litter box is. If they’re choosing to poop outside of the box, they are most likely looking for attention. Make sure that the poop has no blood in it (see Phase 4: Veterinarians + Common Diseases) and spend time making your cat feel special. This includes treats, playtime, combing, whatever they like best.

2. Peeing A. Peeing is a form of scenting, which is essentially your cat being like “this is mine”. Your cats will probably do this a lot when you first move in, so make sure you have the proper cleaners ready (see Appendix A). Clean the spot thoroughly, and spray Feliway all over it. Your cat will smell the Feliway and think “Okay, I peed there already” and walk on. I’m not kidding.

3. Peeing B. Peeing can also be an cry for attention, slightly different from scenting. Here’s how to tell the difference- does your cat only pee when you’re around? Typically this will only be done in areas that you frequent, like your bed or your couch. If so, then this is a cry for attention- see “Pooping”.

4. Peeing C. Is your cat declawed? I sure hope not, because that’s inhumane. But anyways, if it is… declawed cats require a different type of litter than the normal Tidy Cats brand. Call your local vet and consult with them about the best types of litter to use.

5. Attacking. Is your cat attacking people/places/things? Get toys and play with them. Cats are evolved from fearsome predators, they need to be stimulated or they’ll get bored and start hunting whatever they can find. Here are some great toys to buy your cats so that they can “hunt” on their own, there’s something in there for every cat type.

Phase 3: A Place For Everyone

Jackson Galaxy is the Cat Guru, and you can find episodes of his show “My Cat From Hell” on Netflix. Whenever Jackson enters a home of a troublesome cat, he always looks at the environment in terms of how “cat-proof” it is. Your cat needs to have their own stuff, and whether this is a cardboard box or a $150 piece of cat furniture, it needs to be there.

1. Bush vs. Tree dweller. I have a bush dweller and a tree dweller! Bush dwellers are the cats that like to hang out under tables and under beds, and they’re thought to be cats with less self-confidence. Tree dwellers like to climb and look down on their surroundings, reconnecting with their ancestors in the jungle. Cater your apartment based off of your cat’s needs. See Phase 6: Miscellaneous to learn more about different cat personalities.

A word on bush dwellers. I was initially very upset to learn that Gretel is considered a low self-esteem cat. I kept trying to think of ways to make her more comfortable her surroundings, in the hopes that she would one day want to climb things and perch up high. Since getting Mason, she has slowly become a bush/tree dweller. She now climbs to the top rung of her cat furniture, and asks me to help her up on the kitchen table (it’s tall so she can’t jump). What I’m trying to say is that cats will gain confidence as they get more comfortable with their surroundings, and having a second and way more confident cat has helped her come into herself, even in her old age. So proud of my baby.

2. Cat furniture. I’m not going to lie to you, cat furniture is hella expensive. But it’s life-changing. Your cats recognize that its a piece of furniture for them, and they will run right over to it and begin exploring. If your cat is wary about climbing to the higher platforms or levels of the furniture, entice them with treats or a toy. The general rule is one piece of furniture per cat, because they will fight over them. If you have a very active cat, I’d recommend getting a multi-leveled piece.

3. Cardboard boxes. The rumors are true- cats love cardboard boxes. Just open it up and leave it in the middle of the floor, and allow your cats to explore. If you’re not ready to drop $$$, place a warm blanket in the box and allow your cats to curl up.

4. Windows. If you leave for work, leave your blinds open for your cats to peer out. If you don’t, they’ll peer out anyway and wreck your blinds. In the summer time it might seem like a nice idea to leave your windows partially open, but always make sure that your window screens are secure. If they’re not, add masking tape around the sides of the window until you can press on the screen and it doesn’t collapse.

5. Food and water. I like to keep a bowl of water in each room for the cats, and I refresh this daily. I like to add ice cubes in the summer so that the water isn’t that awful room temperature. If you feed your cats dry food, make sure that they’re drinking lots of water after eating.

6. Litter box. Yeah, I know- it’s the worst part of being a cat owner. I keep mine in my hallway closet, and I leave the door partially open so that the cats can get in and out as they please. I’ve seen people with litter boxes in their bathrooms, their hallways, behind chairs in their living room, etc. The general rule is to have one more litter box than there is cat. I’m sorry, that’s crazy talk. I have a one bedroom apartment and I’m not having three litter boxes. One has worked fine for my babies, I just have to be vigilant about cleaning it.

As far as choosing a cat litter brand, most cats are not picky. Some, however, are. Tidy Cats is expensive so I use whatever is on sale at CVS. I prefer scented because I have the litter box right by my front door. Find what works for you, but listen to your cat’s needs.

Be wary of any brand of “lightweight” cat litter other than Tidy Cats. One time I bought Stop & Shop’s “Companion” lightweight litter and it hardened and stuck to the bottom of my litter box and I literally had to rehydrate it to remove it. DISGUSTING.

7. Wall furniture. If you don’t have a lot of room on the floor of your apartment, consider putting up wall furniture for your cat. This can be anything from an expensive piece like this, or a simple wooden board for your cats to walk on.

8. The floor is lava. Confident cats like to be up high on tables, window sills, cat furniture, etc. This is because back in their ancestral days, they had to peer down from the treetops to hunt their prey. Allow your cat this luxury, and try not to freak out if they walk on your kitchen counters or sit on your dining room table. Your cat is programmed to do this, the fact that your cat wants to be up high is a sign of confidence, a sign that your cat is comfortable with their surroundings.
