"Since when do these fuckers come with wings!?" Peter growled as he tried to line up a shot. It wasn't going quite how he wanted it to.

You thought vampires were quick on land? Well, the two of you were finding out pretty quickly that once they were airborne the already difficult task of catching them became nearly impossible.

"I dunno," you replied honestly, sneaking his flask of holy water from his pocket as you slipped by. "But they're kinda doing it for me."

Peter blinked stupidly a few times, standing in bewildered silence for a moment. Even the vampire looked stunned, giving you a look that maybe communicated a little too clearly that it thought it might lose brain cells feeding from you.

With both of them distracted and the vampire finally hovering relatively still in the air, you were able to pretty easily douse the damned thing in holy water. It crashed, shrieking, to the ground.

Peter startled, eyes tearing away from you to glance at the writhing creature before him. "Oh. Right." He pulled the trigger on his crossbow, and a moment later the haunting death call of a vampire filled the air.

Ignoring the dying monster, Peter turned to you, his expression still shocked. "Really? Wings do it for you?"

"What?" you said with a light shrug. "There's a certain allure to vampires. And wings are neat."

"No, no, that's -- you don't get to act all casual about this," he groused, pointing at the creature dissolving into ash. "Would you fuck that thing?"

"I'm not an idiot, Vincent, of course I wouldn't fuck a flying vampire."

"No? Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure. I don't have a death wish. Well, not that big of a death wish... well..."

He was blinking in stunned silence again.

"The point is, I will not be fucking a vampire, winged or otherwise, any time soon. I will, however, maybe be fantasizing about a sexy winged vampire in the shower tonight."

"Oh, I'll fuck that fantasy right out of that pretty head of yours."

I've been thinking about Sarafan Raziel. Because it grings my gears that the fandom mischaracterizes him so.

In the fandom, everyone calls him a prick and an asshole, but I think it would be way more coherent to his character if he were an extremely kind person, who still dirtied his hands in the name of righteousness.

Imagine a human Raziel who is well liked by his peers, who is good with children and kind to women, and who leads the sarafan with a strong will because he has a sense of purpose. Not over status and power, but because he genuinely believes the cause he is part of. Imagine that noble person, that paragon of humanity, that charmed even his wraith self for a while.

And then imagine this person commiting unspeakable acts of genocide in the name of faith. Blinded by righteous rage, he doesn't pity his victims because he was led to believe they were a plague, and doesn't even mind the monster he becomes in the process, because in his eyes, everything he does is for the good of the world and that absolves him. And that would make Wraith Raziel even the more horrified. What do you mean this gentleman he looked up to can turn into that brutal murderer? Capable of wiping out an entire culture?

And it shows that humans can be monsters, and that monsters can be human. That he's not a cackling evil maniac like Moebius, but instead a sweet man. That even war criminals have human lives and go back home to their families at the end of the day.

And everything Sarafan Raziel did against vampires, Vampire Raziel did tenfold against humans over the course of the thousand years that he was Kain's lieutenant. Raziel as a vampire enslaved humans like cattle and turned them into playthings out of boredom. I don't see the fandom criticizing Vampire Raziel nearly as much.

And here's the thing. Once he turned into a Wraith, Raziel had a process of unlearning his idea that humanity were lesser beings. He started fighting to protect them just as much as vampires, because they're also part of the world of Nosgoth, a world he wishes to see restored.

You know, if Wraith Raziel was capable of unlearning a thousand years of his vampire self enslaving humans, and start seeing them as equals and worthy of saving, and later on even as noble beings, I like to think the same would be possible for Sarafan Raziel too. Because even if he lost his memories, his personality stays the same across his lives. I he only had more information. He just never got the chance to.

Or, he did, when he became his new self.

I like to think that, in the end, when he was struck with the Soul Reaver and killed by his wraith self, the memories from the future came rushing through, and he had a glimpse of his entire future history. That would probably have changed his views. But alas, he died too quickly to be able to process it.

he basically yote himself onto the operating table as soon as he turned 18, haha. he was an absolute nightmare during the recovery, though. it was at the time when Lili took a few years out from the psychonauts to go to college, and he kept calling her like "hey do you think it's okay if i go for a run as long as i don't move my arms too much. i was thinking i could hold them behind me like naruto" "raz you had surgery four days ago"

actually, since you asked about general headcanons, more rambling about that time of their lives under the cut!:

i've talked a little before about how Raz and Lili had a pretty tumultuous relationship during their teens, haha. i think around 17/18, things start to simmer down between them. they're still really close, but stuff's not as volatile, and they come to the decision that they want to take a break for a while. no matter how good friends they are, it can be kind of stifling to still be dating the same person you were when you were ten, y'know?

and like i said, this was also when Lili took a break from the Psychonauts. for me, one of the central anxieties of her character is figuring out who she wants to be outside of the Zanotto family's legacy and the expectations of everyone else. we see in PN1 she has kind of a skeptical view of the Psychonauts as a whole - but at the same time, it's the only world she's ever known. she's been training at the Motherlobe since she was a baby. she's spent her whole life immersed in this world, and i think she has a lot of big questions to ask herself as she enters adulthood: who am I? who do I really want to be?

so she takes a break to go study! i haven't decided exactly what, but i think she does something like a major in biological sciences and a minor in pharmaceuticals. she has a great time, and taking that time out ends up being what she needs to realise that actually she does want to stick with the Psychonauts. she and Raz go on their first mission together, things just click, and the rest is history hahaha

Okay so! For his parents I believe I mentioned in the archetype post that despite not really being openly anti-psychic, they still undermine and dismiss him for being so, since as magicians they think being psychic and a magician is “cheating” (which I imagine is a common opinion in the pn universe). Like, it’s not a magic “show” if there’s no show and everyone knows how you did it. Because of this and in conjunction with their parenting style just generally causing Dex to act more defiant, they kind of dump him on his grandpa. Whose death is the catalyst for Dex joining CRIME!

This relationship with his sister is kinda difficult, at the time being they do not get along, just an unfortunate outcome of their upbringing. They’re meant to mirror Frazie and Raz, but instead of their shared psychics (and one wanting to be open about it w/ the other hiding it) bringing them together, it divides them. I think Dex especially resents her on account of how much shit she simply didn’t have to deal with by hiding her psychics because like, HE didn’t know the amount of shit it would get him in if his parents knew, how is that fair? Also the fact she can and totally does get away with a tone of shit simply by blaming it on Dex since he’s the family scapegoat and she’s very much the golden child. I think as she grows up, she’d start tobecome a magician like her parents, but eventually decides to become a psychonaut instead, probably going by her mother’s maiden name since Fahrenheit would be more associated with a villain at this point lol. She would definitely turn out to be a normal and level headed person (w/ therapy), and I really do believe her and Dex would reconcile but like! As adults and when their brains aren’t stupid kid teen brains lol. I don’t really think she would keep in touch with her parents as an adult either, which is probably one of the reasons for her career change but I do like to think she would still put on magic acts at the Aquatodome in her free time. OH AND! She’s good friends w/ Sam! Since both of their grandpas were/are psychonauts n they were both in the motherlobe a lot, by default Dex has to hang out with Dogen bc their sisters are friends but they do actually like es other it’s not like forced or anything (tho I imagine Dex might make Dogen a lil nervous). Also Dex would have to go to whispering rock when he was way younger until he probably got grounded from it.

ALSO IMPORTANT

I know Franke is the name of a pre-existing character, but to be fair psychonauts canon has a Bob, Bobby, and Bobbie (background character). BUT I am thinking about changing it anyway? I might not bc I do love Frankie but here’s the other options

Thinking about Raz, I feel like Raz was always going to leave the Aquato Family Circus.

The Aquatos love each other, but it's all weighed down by this immense psiphobia and underlying tension from the unintended conditional-ness of said love because while they would ultimately choose their love for Raz over the hatred for psychics, Raz especially had good reason to think that they would despise him.

The pamphlet merely spurred him into action at ten rather than sixteen, and gave him hope for changing his family's minds rather than the bitterness of a suppressed teenage-hood.

The only way I can see him staying is if the Aquatos did actually change their minds and decided to give up the Psiphobia, he never got the reassurance of True Psychic Tales that his powers weren't evil, or if he was completely crushed emotionally.

And for the last two, if left alone, Raz would probably not survive.
