heroic aftermath
by Last_for_Hell (@last-in-line-for-hell)
T, 5k, Wangxian
Summary: A typical night hunt goes south quickly as Wei Wuxian gets severely injured protecting the juniors. They are understandably not okay with this, and try to deal with the aftermath of what they went through while taking care of a comatose Wei Wuxian. They were in for a long night ahead of them. Kay's comments: My heart breaks for the juniors in this story, but it's also so heart-warming to see how much they care for their Wei-qianbei. I was especially taken with Ouyang Zichen in this one, the fourth junior who often gets forgotten but is just as much part of the junior squad as the others. Despite Wei Wuxian being hurt badly in this story, there's no need to fear! Happy ending guaranteed! And many found family vibes as well! Excerpt: “We almost died but me walking around is too much for you?!” Jin Ling snarled, edges sharp. “We were not the ones who almost died!” Lan Jingyi cried out. The room went silent. A strangled inhale came from behind them, and Lan Jingyi spun on his heel, hand immediately outstretched, “Sizhui, I-“ “He almost died.” Lan Sizhui voice trembled, “He almost died again.” Lan Jingyi’s hand fell. Lan Sizhui didn’t look at them, eyes anchored to Wei Wuxian’s slack face, “Hanguang-Jun would have lost him again - my father would have lost him again. He’d never recover.” He was shaking. “I...I could have lost him again. And this time I remember, I would know what I lost. I can’t- I can’t lose him.” No one had anything to say to that.
pov alternating, post-canon, established relationship, adorable juniors, hurt wei wuxian, wei wuxian whump, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, aftermath of violence, wei wuxian has a fear of dogs, implied sexual content, angst with a happy ending, guilt

Modern AU — Gusu trio walking home from a party, in the snow, during the wee hours of the morning.
Yunmeng bros are about to have (yet another) snowball fight. Huaisang is trying to get someone to carry him the rest of the way home, even though he's the least drunk person there by a wide margin. Please he's sooo tired omggg

When the doctor prescribed Lan Wangji a pair of reading glasses, he didn't appear all too bothered with it. He had almost expected it to happen - he had noticed his eyesight getting a bit fuzzy, so to have to correct this defect via glasses was, of course, not out of the question.
He hadn't really bothered to find the perfect frames or anything of the sort - he looked through what was on display at the ophthalmologist's office, and settled on a simple, square frame with thin, silver edges.
The doctor told him to wear his glasses whenever he had a lot to read or write, which was basically all the time - as a senior in high school, he had a lot of that to get done. He had high expectations for the future, and that required a lot of work - so the doctor made sure his glasses also had a blue light filter.
Lan Wangji didn't care much about what people would think of him or what they'd say about his new look - but he did wonder what Wei Ying would say.
Lan Wangji had come to grips with the fact that he had a crush on his friend, and that he inevitably wanted his friend to like him, as well. He was a long way before actually confessing his feelings or making them too obvious, though.
It was... a bit embarrassing, to put it frankly, not to mention vulnerable and scary to even think of confessing his feelings - but Lan Wangji did know time was running out. He and Wei Ying did not have the same plans for the future, and he knew that, if he didn't build enough courage to tell Wei Ying how he felt, he would be likely to lose his chance forever.
---
He arrived school as always, took his front seat and pulled out a book to read before class started. The doctor had been right, using the glasses considerably eased the strain on his eyes, and the text was a lot clearer, the storyline a lot easier to get into.
So Lan Wangji had gotten lost into his book, blissfully unaware of the rest of the world, until his desk mate and best friend, Wei Ying, showed up. He sat down with his usual morning coffee and Lan Wangji expected the usual, joyful "good morning, Lan Zhan!" that Wei Ying greeted him with.
Instead of that, there was a gasp, and Wei Ying leaned in close towards Lan Zhan, taking a good look at him. "Oh my God, you got glasses!"
Lan Zhan pretended to keep reading so he wouldn't acknowledge how close Wei Ying was and how much he wanted to kiss him.
"You look so cute! Like a little scholar!" Wei Ying giggled, and Lan Zhan knew he was only imagining the flirtatious sound of it. He must have been.
"So," Wei Ying continued after a brief bout of silence, "you see any better now?"
A nod. "Yes, a lot better."
Wei Ying paused again before replying. "That's...good, that's really good..."
He took out a notebook and his phone instead of saying anything else, like he usually did, and Lan Zhan couldn't help glancing curiously his way. His behavior had been a bit weird - perhaps he found Lan Zhan's new appearance...jarring? Unpleasant? He didn't seem to, but then again, Lan Zhan had mostly been hiding in his book, so what did he know?
So, when his eyes moved towards Wei Ying, he was surprised to see him biting at his lower lip, red in the face, doing a poor job at side-eyeing Lan Zhan. He looked incredibly adorable, flustered like that, and the moment he noticed Lan Zhan looking at him, he turned his head away.
"Wei Ying."
"What?"
But Wei Ying resolutely refused to look at Lan Zhan again, and he found the corners of his eyes twitching with a smile.
"Look at me."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because!"
"Not a real reason."
"Go away!"
"No."
Wei Ying crossed his arms over the desk and rested his head there, cowering in his makeshift hideout. Lan Zhan almost felt like laughing.
"Wei Ying."
"What?!" he burst, so red he looked nothing short of a ripe tomato. Lan Zhan could not be blamed for suddenly crashing his lips to Wei Ying's who looked incredibly cute in his embarrassed fury.
It was only a few seconds, more of a peck than a proper kiss, and Lan Zhan's brain caught up to him only after he'd let go.
Well. He had never been a man of many words, so maybe it had been better for him to just kiss Wei Ying and hope for the best.
Wei Ying seemed to have shifted, from embarrassed to dazed, his eyes glassy and lips still parted. Lan Zhan would have kissed him more, but their teacher just walked in, and the lesson was about to start.
Midway through, the uncharacteristically quiet and flushed Wei Ying passed Lan Zhan a little note - a tiny emoji surrounded by hearts, with a question mark next to it.
Lan Zhan was the one to flush red this time as he drew a little heart in response.

Controversial take time! Wei Wuxian knew that his siblings always loved him, but believed that they were making a mistake in doing so.
(This got too long, it's is under the cut!)
Hear me out. I don't think that Wei Wuxian didn't know he was loved unconditionally. He knew!! For a whole year or so after the war, he was at Yunmeng doing less that the bare minimum to help rebuild, and his brother is mad about it. But he still tries to stand up for Wei Wuxian in front of the rest of Jianghu! The have the stupid soup conversation! Yanli goes off at Jin Zixun in front of half the Jianghu bigshots for insulting him, runs into a battlefield for him after he's killed her husband!! He's never truly afraid of meeting Jiang Cheng post-resurrection, not surprised at all at being asked why he didn't come home. He's just trying to avoid the inevitable mess of feelings that the meeting would entail. Afterall, when it came down to it, Jiang Cheng shut his eyes and stabbed a rock in the end, not him, not even after he'd killed their sister.
Now for the argument. Look, the sibling trio has some complex dynamics, but they survived that household on a mutual understanding that they love each other. That's why Wei Wuxian leaving is the point that casts everything into doubt - they have always been together, and that was an immutable fact until it suddenly wasn't. I don't thing Jiang Yanli or Jiang Cheng ever understood how much Wei Wuxian took their mother to heart - he truly believed any love he deserved was to be earned, because was was a servant. Unconditional love was for family only!
It hit me only while watching the best scene aka Yanli ripping into Jin Zixun at the hunt. She defends him, basically declares him as part of her family, and Wei Wuxian? He's watching his sister having to defend him when it should be the other way round, getting flak for sticking up for him too. He's in agonies the entire time! He's not even happy about jzx getting verbally eviscerated in public!
Most obvious between Sunshot and leaving with the Wens, there's a pattern. Wei Wuxian may not be stepping in as First Disciple to rebuild, but he's still useful - nobody will dare harm the Yunmeng Jiang while he is part of it and holds the power of the Stygian Tiger Amulet. And then, slowly but surely, he sees his brother and and sister standing up for him, deescalating political situations caused by others vying for the very power he possessed and wanted to use to protect the sect. It was actually harming them, in a way that couldn't be solved by its brute force. He is the opposite of useful, now - he's the root of a brewing threat to the sect. This is a huge part of why he leaves! He's pushing away the people he can no longer help but only harm, and he's going to those who he can still be useful to.
Yes, it's about keeping them safe because he loves them, and about protecting lives, but also because he thinks his brother and sister had it wrong all along - they saw him as family when he was just a servant, and therefore acceptable as collateral damage. He cannot allow them to protect him, because that's his job even if they refuse to acknowledge that, isn't it? He left because he thought he was useless, a danger, he didn't deserve their love after they had to defend him at the cost of harm to the sect and themselves. It really fits into his habit of deciding for others once he's made up his mind, doesn't it?
The crux of it is, I think, that he eventually learns that he can have a family. That's why Lan Wangji is important. He doesn't have a fragile, struggling sect of people to protect above everything else, unlike Jiang Cheng. He doesn't die while trying to stick to Wei Wuxian's side, unlike Yanli. He doesn't die for Wei Wuxian either, like Wen Qing. Lan Wangji is able to stay by his side and survives it long enough for him to realise that maybe, just maybe, having him as family is worth breaking rules for, and won't get people killed by default.

I hate defending wwx, he has a lot of fans! But, in the iron extra wwx and jl were talking about the jin sect and wwx was asking how things were going. jl said that he wanted to help people (just how jgy did!) even if the elders didn't respect him enough. And wwx said something like :why don't you ask jc? And jl was like :"he is not a jin". The antis interpret it as him cutting his relationship with jc, but no, jl is trying to protect jc! jc had already dirtied his reputation going around with Zidian at hand to ensure jl's position, jl doesn't want to put a huge x behind his uncle back! And wwx hit jl saying "your uncle would be even sadder if you cut him off". You shouldn't hit kid! But, wwx there is showing growth! He is saying to us and jl that cutting jc off helping him, is going to hurt jc! jl needs to lean on his uncle for help! It's wwx saying that he has thought about the past and maybe he is a little sorry about how he didn't let jc help him!
Again, hitting kids is WRONG. But, mdzs isn't about people doing right things or at least, doing things in the best way.
Also yes jl shows still fear when lwj's name is made. When jl was making a fuss after being hit (because that is embarrassing, and not even his uncle has hit him before!), wwx says : do you want me to call lz? And jl stops. He fears lwj as a kid who was silenced in the past lol. Also, even ljy shows fear of lz sometime, when he says something he shouldn't say and he fears punishment. Maybe we shouldn't take it too seriously, idk what was mxtx editorial intentions. Still, I hope people don't take mdzs as a book about healthy parenting!
(Since it has been MANY hours since this Ask was sent, the extra in question is the one described in the post here.)
Ohhh, that is much much better in that context! It does show growth for WWX, and I like the full circle of going from "lmao why are you calling your uncle for help?" at their first meeting to "why AREN'T you calling your uncle for help?" at this point. (Also, going "well OBVIOUSLY you should do [thing I should also do but Will Not Do Under Any Circumstances], any reasonable person would!" is just. peak Yunmeng Shuangjie behavior.) It's also another instance of Jin Ling, age 13, fiercely deciding that it's his job to protect his uncle, just as he does when he tries to keep Wangxian from barging in to JGY's quarters early in the novel.
Still side-eyeing him threatening JL with LWJ yet again, though. In the other situation (situations plural?) earlier in the story, WWX wants/needs JL to immediately cease whatever behavior he's doing, so an abrupt threat to summon LWJ is, while not ideal, at least going to accomplish his goal. Here, JL isn't actually doing anything wrong. He's not breaking any rules. If anything, he's doing exactly what is socially expected of him, and is acting in a way that is politically sound (even though WWX is right that JC would want to know and help). "Stop pursuing your altruistic political goals that involve nobody but your clan in a way I don't like or else my scary boyfriend from a whole other sect will punish you!" is. Wild. Especially since JL as a whole entire sect leader is the highest-ranking person present!

Black and white
by apathyinreverie (@apathyinreverie)
T, 10k, Wangxian
Summary: The thing is, Sizhui knows that nothing in this world is ever truly black or white. Kay's comments: This story is giving me something I'm always craving: Lan Sizhui pondering over his place in the world and in the Lan Sect after everything that happened in canon, after he learned of his true identity and after he learned what happened to the Wen remnants. It's bitter, it's honest, it's absolutely perfect. Lived for the part where he was roasting Lan Qiren for his hypocricy and I loved the ending of the story - very satisfying! Also featuring outsider POV on Wangxian's developement post-canon in a mostly The Untamed-verse with Chief Cultivator Lan Wangji and them not being together yet, very heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measures. Excerpt: However, he also sees the shadowed caution, the uncertainty so briefly flitting through Xian-ge’s eyes at Jingyi’s enthusiastic invitation, mixed with something else, something that would be impossible to read for Sizhui if he didn’t already know about the longing Xian-ge usually hides so successfully. It is a little devastating to realize how unexpected the invitation apparently seems to Xian-ge. Because, even several months after his return, he still isn’t certain of his welcome in Gusu, of his welcome with A-Die, and it has been barely three weeks since he last left and to return now would certainly break the pattern of only returning every few months which Xian-ge seems to have set himself for his visits. ‘Not unless he is explicitly told’, Wen Ning’s voice once more echoes in his mind. Sizhui chooses to interject softly, “Please, Wei-qianbei,” leaning forward the slightest bit, still a little jarred at their ever-decreasing distance in height, now barely needing to look up to meet Xian-ge’s eyes any longer. “You would most certainly be welcome. This one would be very happy if you were to join us on our way back.”
pov lan sizhui, post-canon, mo dao zu shi & the untamed combination, the untamed compliant, chief cultivator lan wangji, pov outsider lan wangji/wei wuxian, getting together, hurt/comfort, adorable juniors, gusu lan sect rules, cultivation sect politics, good parents lan wangji and wei wuxian, mutual pining, oblivious wei wuxian, protective lan wangji, protective lan sizhui, communication
