So following writing this short meta about Rayla and Callum's differing responses to their hostage exchanges (in 4x09 and here above in 5x08 respectively), I was also thinking about this scene with Viren because it shows, perhaps, the biggest difference I've always seen between Callum and Viren, even back in S1/S2.
I've talked about it before, but it always bears repeating: throughout the first three episodes of S1, we see Viren try everything he can to save Harrow's life, including offering up others' and his own through the soulfang spell... but giving up the egg never occurs to him as an option. The fact that we know it wouldn't have necessarily worked (hi Runaan's stubborn refusal) is a moot point; relinquishing a 'weapon' and letting it fall back into Xadia's hands is not something, point blank, that Viren is willing to do, even to save the life of someone he loves and is willing to die for.
And although the contexts are different - it seems Viren knew saving Soren might sour his relationship with Lissa (and led to him coining Kpp'Ar) but there were no global stakes attached to it as far as he knew or could conceptualize. However, it does show the way he's fallen, particularly with S5 in mind (as in the dream 'flashbacks' he tells Soren what Claudia did in 2x09: "You're okay now. That's all that matters"). But here, it doesn't Matter at all.
Arc 1 Viren is a villain and an antagonist precisely because of three things.
He's willing to sacrifice other people, even people who trusted and followed him (his best friend's children, the human armies)
He's willing to sacrifice, manipulate, and selectively choose amongst his children (Soren and Claudia)
He cares too much about what he considers to be the Greater Good ("a bright future for humanity" / "his destiny will be the destruction of all of humanity") that he loses sight of who he wants it for (his children: "I would've asked you to choose the egg over my own life, if it came to it")
While Viren says much of this is for the greater good, it's also very clearly self-serving in his own quest for power ("You made the same choice you've always made: the one that gives you power"). And while Callum has pride, he does not have ego.
Because you have Callum. The revenge spell creates a dangerous weapon. He knows this, and has seen and fought against the harm it caused first hand. Claudia was faced with a similar choice in 2x07 ("If you must choose between Soren and egg, pick the egg") and even she hesitated. But Callum doesn't. He doesn't hesitate for a second to give Finnegrin what he wouldn't under torture and under principle, because "the second you see that elf girl in pain" ("the second it looks like you're in danger, I'm jumping in after you"), he loses himself.
Because Viren says, "I would do anything for you," and doesn't mean it, but Callum says, "I would do anything for you," and means it in its entirety.
While Callum and Viren have a lot of similarities, they will never be truly like each other because Callum will never be willing to sacrifice his loved ones in the same way. That is their core and most crucial difference.
However, that doesn't mean that - like Viren - Callum's core and choices cannot be exploited, and that the ones he makes will always work out for him, going into S6 in particular.
Because he loves his family. And that's it - and that's everything.

Season 5 will reflect season 2 Theory
Tumblr media
Season 4, despite its flaws, was a clear-cut reflection of Season 1. Here are some examples (There are many MANY more, I can make another post about it while waiting for Season 6) : - Harrow’s and Ibis’ deaths (Harrow gives The Key of Aaravos and Ibis his staff – to Callum) - Harrow gives a letter and Ibis his last breath (message). Both talk about Aaravos.
- Callum meets Rayla for the first time in Episode 2 of Season 1 – He sees her again for the first time in Episode 2 of Season 4.
- In both Seasons 1 and 4, episode 3 ends with death and both have a message regarding said death (Runaan’s arrow on Harrow’s death + Ibis’ breath on his own death).
- The rest of the Season is about going UP the mountain to save Zym – while in Season 4 they are going INSIDE the mountain.
- Both Lujanne and Rex Igneous are unable to help the group – In both cases Callum finds the answer (use the Primal Ball – understand it’s a map).
- Both last episodes end with the “bad” gang finding a map (Claudia’s dark magic spell in Season 1)
!Bonus note on Rayllum: They are not in love in the first season and almost the same can be said about season 4. They are not exactly together yet and Callum seems to act like Season 1 Rayla while Rayla is more cheery like Season 1 Callum.
Ever since we got the Season 5 trailer and screenshots, I couldn’t stop myself from comparing them to Season 2. So here are some examples!
Tumblr media
Beautiful irony! In the first episode of Season 2 Janai and Amaya fight to the death and the sword Janai used to destroy Amaya’s sword is gifted to Amaya in Season 4.
Tumblr media
Both Seasons will start in Katolis.
Tumblr media
The tables have turned! While Aaravos was secretly desperate to use Viren for his own benefit, now Viren needs Aaravos to save his life.
Tumblr media
Just like Callum had to fight his inner dark self, Viren comes to realise how he lost his own battle and that it’s probably too late.
Tumblr media
Keys vs Doors.
Tumblr media
The Callum-Viren parallels continue (Dark Magic Coma).
Tumblr media
The Great Bookery! Both Season 2 Viren and Season 5 gang look for information on Aaravos. They end in battle : Viren against Katolian soldiers, the gang against corrupted banthers. Talking of bathers...
Tumblr media
Season 2 banther vs Season 5 banther.
Tumblr media
Sol Regem is back!
Tumblr media
Claudia and Soren using an empowered arrow with dark magic vs Callum and Rayla using sky magic on an arrow!
Tumblr media
Season 2 Pirate city vs Season 5. Quite the different tone huh...
Tumblr media
Meeting the pirate!
Tumblr media
The boat from Season 2 is quite similar with the one from Season 5. I doubt they’re the same though.
Tumblr media
Struck by lightening. We’ve seen this before... Could a similar turn of events happen in Season 5? What if the gang is on the white boat and are attacked by the pirates on the red boat. What if like Season 2, Callum and Zym go together, but to slow the pirates down (being the only ones that can fly).
Tumblr media
Season 2 Claudia uses an octopus-like creature to catch the gang when they try to escape on Phoe phoe. Well what if she uses it again to catch... Callum?
Tumblr media
We’ll have to wait and see. Thank you for reaching the end. ^^

At last I've finished my new Rayllum comic, this time featuring Rayla's nightmare, but Callum is there to watch over her. The first is during Rayla's panic attack. Callum still does the pulse thing, but lowers his hand to his heart. So she can feel his heartbeat, then lay her down and ask her to concentrate on him and his voice. In the end, I opted for something more realistic, even if I could always place it elsewhere. The second scene is that, after the duo's discussion, Callum was supposed to take a look at Rayla's bow. Thinking about Claudia's last words until he felt Rayla's hand and told her he liked it when she touched him, followed by Rayla wrapping her arms around him for warmth. I already felt it was dragging on and even though I was able to put in the hug, I hope I could put the bow scene in another drawing or a one-shot for example.
________________________
Page 1 and 2
Rayla : Where I am ?
Claudia : You're selfish, tell me why I don't have the right! All I want is to keep my father alive?! Everything I've done is for my family! To keep him with me! So why am I being robbed of what is rightfully mine?! So tell me you elf… Why should you be allowed to have yours back?
Rayla : Your father wanted to invade Xadia. He allowed a kingdom to be corrupted for his downfall. And you helped him, turning your back on your brother
Claudia : You know nothing! He did it for the good of mankind! Don't try to blame me for anything! When you've abandoned and hurt your loved ones. You came back like a flower, thinking you'd be welcomed. Nothing was going your way. You're no saint! So don't accuse me and see your own mistakes
Page 3
Viren : Tell me, elf, was my hunt really worth it?
Rayla : Ca... Callum. No... I beg you... Don't look at me. Outside, we'll be attacked! I've got to go! Otherwise we'll never reach the tower! Getting Nova's blade is the priority, we can't take a detour! I must protect you!
Page 4 and 5
Callum : Rayla, it's okay, you're not alone. You're here with me and Stella, remember. Can you feel my pulse and my touch? Rayla, relax. There you go, breathe just like me. Good again. We've eliminated the creatures that attacked us. And we've surveyed the area, haven't we?
Rayla : Yes, I remember.
Callum : That's good, Rayla, keep going.
Rayla : And the air dome you created at Umber Torr. You remade it for this cave.
Callum : See? Then breathe again. We're safe, you have nothing to fear. Do you want to talk about it ?
Claudia : You're selfish.
Rayla : Before that, I'd like to know… Why are you so intent on saving my family?
Callum : Eh… Well, why not? Recovering Nova's blade and saving them is like killing two birds with one stone!
Rayla : But...
Page 6
Callum : Rayla, in those two years, we created our own path. We've moved forward and sometimes lost our way, but we keep going. Because we want to achieve our goals. And we've done things for ourselves. Because we thought it was the right thing to do. But also for others, so that they can live in a better day. And finally, so that we can grieve properly. But you have the choice of reuniting with them. You shouldn't waste it when the opportunity is there. You could have continued your hunt. And yet you've come back to us.
Rayla : There are so many things I could have done better. So many things I haven't told you about my two years without you all. Even with Stella, I felt so alone. I was so cold and had nothing. I wish I could have stayed with all of you for those two years. I regret it but I'm here now and I want to stay by your side.
Callum : Rayla, you've always had a place with us. Even when you're reunited with them, that won't change. I promise!
Rayla : You always find the words to soothe me. They are magic! They make me feel able to face anything. You bewitched me and I've always been under your spell. So I can only love you more.
Rayla : I had a nightmare I thought I was going to die.
Callum : Really? And now you're thinking about it?
Rayla : Not so much now that you're here. Of course you do, Stella

so much hype for season 6 now. we’re probably getting:
they try to get the pearl back but a bunch of shit happens on the way
aaravos and callum interactions!!
aaravos flashback and emotional scene
deep magic rant
viren is probably not dead if aaravos was lying (context clues)
claudia will probably chase dragang back across the sea or to scumport to recruit pirates to try to get pearl back
finnegrin’s return (maybe) (aaron said there will be pirates again!!) (who heard abt a treasure…)
sol regem’s return (oh no)
aaravos’s return (i hope) (sol regem n aaravos interacting would be so interesting bc they’re radicalists on opposite ends)
janai and karim fight for rightful ruler a bunch of people fuckin die karim dies at jainai’s hand mayhaps
maybe zubeia and sol regem fight (keeping them both occupied) but sol regem starts winning
maybe they actually need dark magic help to stop the dragon aaaagain from ruining fragile human/elf peace (will callum etc be called back to lux aurea to help fight back but callum isn’t strong enough on his own.. more trauma for baby boy <3 )
callum does some absolutely insane shit to save rayla’s life again
what if pearl breaks before they can rehide it (intentionally question mark)
ezran negotiates with millennia old startouch elf to maybe not play god and have some empathy or something idk
uhh maaybe they get a sword to kill aaravos with!!!! (might not happen this season, too soon?)
we meet some celestial skywing elves and maybe hear about some other startouch elves more from them
lain tiadrin and runaan’s return (yippee!!)

Why You Shouldn't Be Worried About Runaan, Lain and Tiadrin's Return
Over the last few weeks I have seen many people being excited and happy for the return of Runaan, Lain and Tiadrin in the next season or 2. However I have also seen some people being very worried, believing that they cannot truly return and that freeing the 3 of them will only result in them being allowed to pass on into the afterlife.
So if you are one of those people allow me to reassure and convince you that this is will not happen and that everything is pointing towards a happy and permanent reunion.
Reason 1: Runaan's bound arm
Back in season 1 we saw the assassins bind themselves with magical ribbons that will not unbind until a target has been killed. Runaan and Rayla were the only survivors of this squad and see them both dealing with the tightening of the 2nd still bound ribbon. And while Rayla managed to get hers removed by Zym, Runaan still has his attached and even goes into the coin with his arm still bound.
Tumblr media
This is important as the writers and animators would not have kept him bound if this was not going to be an important story point later.
And yes we did see the other assassins still bound in the afterlife and that they lost their final bindings after they saw Rayla has lost hers and believed that Ezran was dead. However the situation with Runaan is going to be very different because he isn't dead and because it may tie to another important plot point for Runaan.
2) Runaan's Future
In the Bloodmoon Huntress we get some important insight into Runaan's feelings towards his choice to become an assassin.
Tumblr media
He has doubts about his decision to take on this role and it's duties and these will definitely be brought back into the story when he does return. This will also tie back into my first point about Runaan's binding as he could potentially lose his arm as there may no longed be any loophole that can save him as Zym is possibly too big to take it off safely.
This loss of a limb will definitely make Runaan question his future and what he wants to do now he has been freed.
And even if he does manage to keep his arm his role as an assassin may no longer be needed for this peaceful and unified Xadia that many are trying to achieve. These doubts and guilt that he canonically feels were not brought up on a whim and will be a major part of his arc once he has been freed.
3) Why aren't they dead yet?
It would have been very easy to to kill these 3. Lain and Tiadrin were frozen in ice and Runaan was chained to a dungeon wall. All were at Viren's mercy and he could have killed them easily but he didn't. They are still here, alive with canon evidence to back this up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did Runaan's flower sink? Yes but pay attention to what Rayla said. It's still floating and the crystal is still glowing which means he still alive.
Another thing to consider is this line from Claudia in the season 4 finale.
Tumblr media
If Runaan, Lain and Tiadrin were indeed just spirits and therefore dead in these coins then the lava should not be able to hurt them in the way that Claudia describes. Her theorising about some kind of extreme pain that the 3 of them could potentially endure could only truly happen if they still were alive. Lava couldn't hurt them if they were just spirits, it just wouldn't.
4) Rayla's reaction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rayla is relieved, hopeful and overjoyed to have a chance to save and reunite. They aren't going to take that opportunity away from her and Ethari by sending them on a quest that will ultimately only end up in them saying goodbye to their spirits as their family leaves for the afterlife.
This would not only devastate fans but would 100% break the both of them in a way that they may never be able to recover. This storyline would also go against all the messages of love and hope that the show shares and champions.
5) Callum and Ezran
Runaan killed Harrow or at the very least Pip in Harrow's body. Callum and Ezran are now orphans and have spent the last 2 years trying to create peace betwen the 2 halves of Xadia.
Runaan returning and the quest to free him and Rayla's parents will definitely bring up some very complicated feelings for the pair of them, especially Callum who's feelings towards Runaan have already been introduced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callum has understandably, very complicated thoughts and feelings towards Runaan they would not have been brought up twice in the last year or so if they weren't going to be directly addressed and resolved. And you cannot achieve this with Runaan being a spirit, you need him alive and physically present in order to address this. And they will address it, because the pain is still there and because if they don't it will just fester and will affect the relationships that Rayla has with both Runaan and Callum. There is no way that Callum and Ezran can heal and move on and there is no way that Rayla and Callum will truly be able to be together if it isn't.
6) The Bloodmoon Huntress
Towards the end of the Bloodmoon Huntress we get this line from her:
"Be warned. Cross my path again and you'll see the full extent of what I can do."
"This I vow on Xadia herself." (Bloodmoon Huntress page 116)
We also get these line a few pages later about her return in the future.
Runaan: She will enchant another altar, I'm sure. But it will take her time and effort. Yet another thing to slow her down from returning to full power. (Bloodmoon Huntress page 119)
At this point in the story they have weakened her by injuring her, denying her the blood she craves and by destroying the altar that she uses for her Bloodmoon rituals.
She is also a very powerful and dangerous elf with a personal connection and feud with 3 important characters in Xadia, one of which is 1 of the show's main characters. There is a good chance that she will show up again in the show so that her feud with the Moon family can be resolved and that she, perhaps the second most dangerous and powerful elf in Xadia can be stopped once and for all.
And there you have it, all the hints and clues that have been established that point towards a happy and permanent Moon family reunion. I hope that this has reassured and convinced anyone that is worried about their fates that there is nothing to be worried about. They're coming back just wait and see.

The Dragon Prince: Battle Banter
Revisiting an idea I had were TDP is a fighting game with NetherRealm style prefight dialogue, after playing MK1. Now includes season 4 and 5 characters.
----
Aaravos: Poor little prince, lost in the past.
Karim: Our sun will shine glorious once again.
Aaravos: Tomorrow never comes, what makes you think yesterday's gone are any exception.
Aaravos: I'm a master of subtle manipulation.
Callum: Taking over my body wasn't subtle.
Aaravos: Yet, here you are, right where I want you to be.
Aaravos: I know what you're going to ask me.
Viren: How I'm I still here?
Aaravos: I'm curious about that myself...
----
Finnegrin: Only one way you could've gotten out of those chains, lad.
Callum: You set up your own downfall, Finnegrin.
Finnegrin: This time, I won't bother with the chains.
Nyx: Seriously, Villads the one you want to see about getting the Sea Legs back, not me.
Finnegrin: Nice try, Commadore.
Nyx: Feathers! Should've known that would come back to bite me.
Finnegrin: The Bloodmoon Huntress, and the Pirate Lord.
Kim'Dael: Ours will be a Deadly Partnership.
Finnegrin: Xadia, won't know what hit them.
Finnegrin: You cost me my ship and me crew, girl.
Rayla: Oh no. The poor wee pirate is going to have to do his own dirty work from now on.
Finnegrin: How about I start with you then.
Finnegrin: You can't seriously think your leader material.
Karim: I have a whole army of Sunfire Elves ready to follow me!
Finnegrin: They follow your girlfriend man! Your're just the figurhead.
----
Kim'Dael: I remember you...
Rayla: Except I'm not a weak little girl anymore.
Kim'Dael: Aren't you?
Kim'Dael: What does Startouched blood taste like, I wonder?
Aaravos: Sorry, but my blood is far, far, beyond your reach.
Kim'Dael: Ah, but your vessel very much is so.
Kim'dael: Another toy soldier for me to break.
Corvus: You'll find I'm not so easily broken.
Kim'dael: My dear, your not the first I've heard that from, and you won't be the last.
----
Terry: So, um, we haven't been properly introduced.
Soren: Yeah, kinda hard to do when you wrap someone in leaves.
Terry: Vines actually, not-the-point, my name's Terrestrius, but you can call me Terry.
Terry: Claudia did some messed up things, but she was still so...
Callum: Brilliant, fun, and sweet. Yeah, I've been there too, Terry.
Terry: You really have, haven't you...
Terry: I'm sorry about what Claudia almost did to you.
Ezran: Why did you follow her for so long?
Terry: She was the first to truly accepted me for who I am. I guess that made it harder to see what was happening to her.
----
Karim: We had a deal, Huntress!
Kim'Dael: One you had no means of actually fulfilling.
Karim: I would have, had you not abandoned me!
Janai: Do you even realise what you are doing?
Karim: I am saving our people from your folly, sister.
Janai: You're forfeiting our future to prop up an already lost past!
Amaya: [You broke Janai's heart!]
Karim: Better a broken hearted sister then a prideless people.
Amaya: [Pride is the cause of ruin not it's solution, and it's not more important than family!]
Soren: So you finally proposed to the General, huh? Congratulations!
Janai: I have a vacancy for a Brideshand, if you're available?
Soren: Sure, but what happened to your first- oooh...That spot was for your brother wasn't it?
Amaya: [Shouldn't you still be in the medical tent?]
Corvus: I'm all fixed up. Urgh, honest General.
Amaya: [Really? Then you wont mind a little sparring match.]
Callum: I know I'm taking a risk but, you're not my Queen, so... technically I don't have to do what you say.
Janai: Then I invoke my authority you as your future aunt instead.
Callum: Aww. But still, no can do.
Guest Fighter
Minsc: Many pardons, my furry friend and I are quite lost.
Amaya: [Uh, who are you? Some kind of adventurer?]
Minsc: We are Minsc and Boo! Protectors of the weak, slayers of Bhaalspawn, and sharp thorn in the boot of evil!
Minsc: (squeaks) Boo says he is not speaking with your luminous toad anymore.
Ezran: I'm sure Bait didn't mean what he said.
Minsc: (squeaks) Boo is sceptical, and so is Minsc.
Minsc: Your buttocks is long overdue for a virtuous kicking, fiend.
Kim'Dael: That... is a new one. What manner of madman are you?
Minsc: The Rashemaaran kind!
Minsc: You did well to escape the clutches of your evil father, Soren. You are in good company.
Soren: Thanks. Still... I wish I could've gotten Claudia away too.
Minsc: In Minsc's experience, for evey noble Gorion's Ward, there is usually a vile Sarevok as well.
Minsc: Your mischievous murmurs will have no affect on Minsc, villain. Boo and I will protect this world from you.
Aaravos: Like you "protected" your dear Dynaheir?
Minsc: Go for the eyes, Boo!
Minsc: Minsc and Boo, are here to help you.
Callum: Hey, nice rhyme.
Minsc: Rhyme?
Finnegrin: Why in blazes are you after me barnacle brain? I don't even know you.
Minsc: Wherever there is evil butt to kick, Minsc and Boo stand ready with their finest boots of justice!
Finnegrin: You are without doubt the most absurd man I've ever met.
----
Here's my first go.
And my attempt at including visuals, with art provided by a very generous guy.

Wait wait wait. I just realized something.
So it's important to the story and Rayla as a person that she has yet to "take." Rayla has an extremely hard time with the concept of killing (which I don't blame her and actually love about her; I swerve for any animal in the road, even a tiny bird, and I almost cried after accidentally hitting a racoon while driving on the highway late one night and being unable to swerve in time. Poor guy looked so scared....anyway), because she doesn't want to let people down when she needs to kill someone (like in s1ep1) but she also just can't get herself to do it. She can't get herself to directly kill someone. Which I really admire about her.
But. Technically. She HAS killed someone. Not directly, but she was the only cause for the death of Viren. She intentionally flung herself into him with the sole purpose of causing his death to save Zym and everyone else (even if that meant she died in the process). Thank god she didn't die and that Callum was close and determined enough to save her, but yeah. She only did that with the goal of killing Viren. And she actually succeeded.
So she may not have directly killed someone with her hands/blades, but she has 100% killed someone. It's not like, a super big revelation, but it's still wild to me to consider. Makes me wonder if Rayla would be conflicted to think about that if she eventually gets confirmation that yeah, Viren was 100% killed by her actions. That was her intention all along, but I don't doubt that she'd still be at least a tiny bit conflicted by it cuz that's just who she is.
Rayla is an incredibly talented warrior - fast, agile, smart, etc., but you're right, she's not a very good assassin. For me, I've really enjoyed watching her realize that her true calling is using those skills to protect people, rather than harm them. But I do think in her role as protector, she will kill someone if she has to.
Marcos wasn't hurting anyone, and therefore did not deserve to die. Ezran hadn't hurt anyone, and the egg hadn't been destroyed after all, so there was no reason to kill him. But Viren was hurting Zym. Viren was dangerous, and therefore, I can't see Rayla feeling too conflicted about killing him. She did what she had to do. Same for Claudia. She cut off Claudia's leg because she had to, in order to save her friends.
So long answer short, my take is that Rayla only resorts to hurting/killing people when she really has no other choice. We also see this when she sides with Ezran about trying to stop Aaravos from getting out of prison at all vs Callum's idea of just planning to kill him.

Shipping Super-post: Why Sorayla is a great ship
Tumblr media
Time to talk about a ship that is special to me and needs more discussion. Before I get into it, I'm not trying to make anyone ship Sorayla. And before you think me a heathen, understand that Rayllum is my OTP. Just browse my Tumblr account if you need proof. But I am a multishipper and I think this little ship needs more love and attention. It DOES NOT mean I don't want Rayllum to stay together. I do. So here we go. Here's some reasons why Sorayla makes a great couple:
1. They're jock bros. Soren and Rayla are both physical fighters, using blades as their weapons of choice. They are both athletic and like to show it off. This is seen with Rayla showing off her acrobatics to the Dragang and Soren being proud of his bod. It's one of the many things that make them birds of a feather, and means they could totally spar and work out together as a couple. Also... They do spar! Rayla clearly enjoys facing him.
Tumblr media
2. They have fun chemistry. Rayla and Soren have a lot of fun banter. Despite her annoyance with him early on, Rayla indulges Soren more than other opponents. While they get only her disgruntled scowls, Rayla exchanges jabs with Soren and is, generally, more playful around him. Even if they're both meatheads, Rayla is the more grounded of the two with her often playing the straight man to his funny man. It's pure bromance mixed with some potential for enemies to lovers.
Tumblr media
3. They both want to impress their father but turned on him to do the right thing. One of the most compelling parts of a good pairing is shared experiences (often trauma). And these two both have daddy issues galore. They crave the approval of their father or father figure. Rayla wants Runaan to not hate her and to prove herself as an assassin. Soren wants his father to see him as capable and worthy. But Soren and Rayla have good hearts that override this desire. They choose to do what's right and so they both defy and fight their own fathers. Rayla and Soren are heroes with strong moral compasses. Also fun fact: They both tried to kill Viren to save someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Rayla really cares about Soren. Much of the fandom views Rayla as seeing Soren as a nuisance and she certainly expresses that a few times. However we also see Rayla has come to respect Soren by Season 3. And in Season 4, Rayla spends most of the season worrying about his well being, and is overjoyed that he's alive to the point she looks ready to kiss him when she finds him alive (see the header image).
Tumblr media
5. Canon scenes that make them shippable:
Soren and Rayla bonding over not wanting Callum & Claudia to flirt. I feel like this was a bit of intentional shiptease by the writers (double juicy as Rayla may have been crushing on Callum as well).
Tumblr media
Soren canonically liking the idea of Rayla being interested in him (the fandom pretends this scene doesn't exist):
Tumblr media
Rayla realizing she likes and respects Soren and him being playful back:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rayla casually touching Soren:
Tumblr media
Rayla being really really happy he's alive:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scandalous hand holding:
Tumblr media
6. They look good together: Just look at that aesthetic. Think of the beautiful babies they'd have. Artwork by me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this Sorayla super post. To all my fellow Sorayla shippers, I'm down for all discussion and I'm eager to see your Sorayla fanart, fics, memes, and headcanons! ^-^

Okay I saw a post the other day saying that Stella feels really suspicious, and I’ve just had a thought
Stella makes the star rune glow, meaning she’s connected to the rarest primal source of them all: stars. She has powers we’ve never seen before, such as making portals. She was an orphan, all alone.
When you think of the star primal, you think of Aaravos. And you know what portals do? They transport something or someone from one place to another. We’ve seen her save Rayla’s bag of coins from lava and teleport them into her hands, but we’ve also seen her transport those gems somewheee, but we don’t see where they arrive in frame, meaning, presumably, her powers aren’t just short-range.
So portals transport things, and Stella can probably have a very long range for that transportation. What does Aaravos desire more than anything? Transportation out of his imprisonment.
What have we seen Aaravos do before? Bring a caterpillar to life in the world outside his prison, and made it grow and then turn into a creature that “will lead you to one who has answers”, so that he can be freed. So, presumably, he could do this with other animals too. Especially if it’s an animal that’s connected to the same primal source as him.
So what I’m trying to get at here: Stella might be either a past attempt to escape his prison before the present timeline, or just part of this huge plan Aaravos has been cooking up for centuries. Stella is only a baby, so it seems unlikely that it’s the first. But for the latter, I think it fits perfectly.
Think about it. This baby creature can already create really amazing portals. When she’s older, she’ll (naturally) get more powerful. We might not have seen her transport living things yet, but that could be something that develops over time (or just a power she already has that hasn’t been displayed to us yet). And, after exposure to Rayla, a genius in cracking codes and figuring her way out of a situation, and after exposure to Callum, an amazing mage, the first human primal mage to exist (ever? In centuries?? One of the two), after exposure to Ezran, the youngest Katolian king like ever (you’ll have to fact check me on that) with a lot of power and a good heart, after exposure to Zym, the literal dragon prince, she’d probably get more powerful (and maybe more influence over these people in power). With all that, Stella could potentially eventually get to teleporting Aaravos straight out of his prison, either if the humans fail their mission or just to help alongside the humans to make sure he gets out.
If I’m right about this (doubtful), then there’s no way he’d just stop at two. He’s almost certainly got heaps more plans out there to ensure his escape. It’s probably seven in total: one for each element. Claudia and Viren represent dark magic, Stella is star. I’d bet three toes and a hair tie that there’s another for earth, one for sea, one for stars, one for sky, and one for ocean.
(Also the wiki page on magical creatures has literally nothing on cuddlemonkeys other than they’re lemurs connected to each primal source)

Note
I just finished Book 5, and do you think that Ezra’s arc will have him learn that words aren’t enough? Some fans do think that he’s the least emphasized of the Dragang
I don't think Ezran is going to learn that words aren't enough (they have been, often times in his life, and trying non violent routes are important) but I do think he's going to be presented with more and more situations where it is, as he acknowledges, "Not that simple" (4x03).
In Arc 1, you had the transformative trio of characters (Callum, Rayla, Soren) who were rapidly changing as people versus the more "circumstances change and drag out certain personality traits either more or less" stagnated trio (Ezran, Viren, Claudia). In Arc 2 thus far, it seems that Soren, Claudia, and Ezran are the 'stagnant' ones and Viren, Callum, and Rayla are the transformative ones. That being said, I do think S5 focused on Ezran as much as S4 focused on Rayla, so it's not surprising there's a bit of a trade off (especially with Janai very much being a Main Character in arc 2) with Callum (always our main Main protagonist) getting a decent amount every season. There's definitely a lack of Ezran in the first four episodes (he gets about one scene a-piece) but I do think it's over quality > quantity, in some ways. (Bow from She-Ra for example is in every single episode of that series, but gets very little by way of arcs or conflict or interiority, y'know?)
That said:
I talked about this a bit more in a podcast review I did for the season / this meta, but I think Soren and Ezran are having slowburn arcs that will come to fruition in S6. Soren, after all, hasn't really changed as a character since the end of S3 - he's on team good guy, he's reaffirming his choices and love for his friends, he still cares for Claudia and still views his father as a cruel villain (which, Viren is/can be).
Ezran, likewise, is dealing with his own well, slowburn of problems. In a lot of ways, Ezran has to hold it together when everyone else is falling apart (Rayla is MIA, Callum is a mess; staying level headed even when they're arguing; being the main negotiator seemingly between the Pentarchy and the dragons of Xadia; and ruling is own kingdom). He takes his duties seriously and wants to broker peace further, if maybe a tad faster than people are ready for. Like Janai says, I think, his priorities have changed since becoming king. His duty first and foremost is to his kingdom/the world. (Not that it wasn't his mindset before, but it wasn't his responsibility before pre-series, y'know?) Which is very Rayla of him, I think ("I let them all down" in 3x04 / "I just feel like I'm letting everybody down" for Ez in 3x03).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we see how much this weighs on Ezran based on how heavily he takes responsibility for his perceived and or literal mistakes. Whether it's speeding things up too fast / not giving enough room for his people's, or his own anger...
E: I had a speech planned for today. It was about peace and love and hope. But I think I left something out. I ignored something that was true. I denied something that is undeniable.
or in doing the right thing in saving the Baitlings, but putting his friends in danger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Soren acknowledges that this isn't really fair for Ezran, either:
Soren: This is all too heavy. It's not fair you have to struggle through this alone. You deserve time to do kid stuff. If you spend all your time doing adult stuff now, you'll grow up weird, like your brother and Rayla.
Now, on the certain level, Ezran is alone because he's like - he's the King, and that's its own unique position. However, if you look at how close Viren and Harrow, and Harrow and Sarai were, in their decision making, they did everything together. In spite of being a single dad, Harrow was never alone in what he did as king (for better or for worse): "I accept that tonight I may pay the price for our mistakes."
So I think it's interesting this emphasis on loneliness/alone in the same season we have Amaya and Rayla's conversation about it too:
Tumblr media
A: My big sister Sarai was the smartest, strongest, bravest person I knew. When she died, I felt lost and weak without her.
Tumblr media
I hated feeling that way, so I learned to be strong alone. Stoic, strong, and lonely. [...] To have that kind of strength, it is not enough to love someone. You have to trust them to share the burdens you're carrying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So who does Ezran depend on to carry that burden with him? Because Ezran isn't supposed to be alone as king, and Harrow spelled it out for us:
When I am gone your brother Ezran will become king, and you will be his partner, his defender, and his closest advisor.
So the question is... has Callum really fulfilled his role for his brother? Callum isn't crownguard, so actually protecting Ezran is primarily in Soren and Corvus' hands, exemplified by Soren being the one to get angry over the ruined painting in 4x03, to run to Ezran in 4x09, and for Callum to be absent from the Dragon mission in S5. And when Callum is there to have a duty to fulfil:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we see the brothers - not Ezran and Rayla - disagree on how to proceed forward with Aaravos, getting momentarily a little heated before they both turn to Rayla (and remember those Rayla parallels I mentioned earlier?):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, it's not surprising that Ezran wants to take the diplomatic / least violent route. He's the one primarily appealing to Akiyu rather than barrelling onwards, and expresses great concern for her (even after she tried to kill them). Claudia thinks she can appeal to him in 5x09 because of his empathy. A more compassionate, reasonable route is what he's always done, trying to reason evenly with Finnegrin and with Rex Igneous, even if it doesn't precisely work out... simply because they, like his brother, don't exactly Value the same things Ezran does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, so the broyals disagreed once, and Callum is a little flighty as a High Mage. So what? Well: Callum now knows, and has already committed himself, to helping Rayla free her parents from the coins, including Runaan.
And Ezran's short story going into S5 hints that this may not exactly be something he's happy about:
Ezran gripped the arrow tight. The thing in his hands was a terrible letter, the ribbon its message: the king of Katolis was dead. King Harrow. His father. Something cold lurched inside him. He fought against it. He’d fought it before, that same hurt, years ago—when he’d found out what really happened that night in Katolis. Still, it haunted him. He couldn’t help but imagine the scene, all of it playing out like grim theater before him, as though he’d been there, as though he’d stood by and watched it happen. That Moonshadow elf upon the castle ramparts, skulking toward his father’s chambers.
Tumblr media
It stared up at him. Ezran felt a coldness twist its way around his heart. It took his lungs, too, and for a long moment he could not breathe, could not feel anything but an unfamiliar anger so potent it seized the whole of him, inside and out. Ezran stepped towards the arrow— —and stomped down on it as hard as he could. He wished he were bigger, stronger, he wished his boots were made of iron and not something soft. Still, it was enough. When he pulled his foot away, Ezran glared down at the arrow’s hawkish head, flattened and broken. Its ruby eye slipped from its socket, its black metal bent like frayed feathers. He left it there in the dark.
Full short story here.
So Ezran is going to find out, or possibly feel, that Callum and Rayla are keeping a secret from him (again, just like S2, which didn't make him happy then, either). Callum is going to side with Rayla over him if he mandates that Runaan shouldn't or can't be freed, giving into his anger and grief much the same way his father did. He may pull rank - and Callum is going to disregard it. A very similar fallout repeating itself...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ezran being increasingly isolated (especially if Callum and Rayla are working, or leaving, to find the Starscraper), his disapproval and grief, trying to manage the possible fallout of Zubeia being injured/MIA, feeling undervalued and disregarded by his brother... There's little doubt in my mind that Callum and Ezran (and Rayla) will reconcile and find their way back to one another, healing their hurts, but Ezran has a lot of potential anger and angst to express and a lot on his upcoming plate, steadily added to and set up by the previous seasons.
Tumblr media
Which in a lot of ways, makes sense. Ezran as king and Callum as high mage, and as brothers, have to prove they won't fall apart the same way that King Harrow and Viren did, more necessary than ever now that Callum has done dark magic again. Ezran was there to pick up the pieces after Rayla left, but he may still have anger over that and their joint secret keeping from him / feeling like they're treating him 'unfairly' like a child. We've also never really seen Ezran have this type of conflict before, nevermind for the trio as a whole (most of the time it's been Callum and Rayla disagreeing, a couple brief instances of Ez and Rayla, and Callum and Ez a few times in S1 / 5x05) so for Ezran to be what starts falling apart would really rattle all three of him, and seems to be where he's headed, character wise.
And I for one cannot wait to see it.
TLDR; Ezran's slow burn arc, much like Soren's, is being steadily set up and is going to likely be a big focus in the next two seasons, pushing him and other characters in brand new directions and with some really emotional, powerful storytelling to upstage our previously held status quo in all the ways.

That’s it?
What this episode was even about?
Like it was a collection of scrambled scenes with exposition and little else. I can list exactly two - maybe three - plot hooks established:
- Callum is in possession of the magic mirror and is trying to solve its mystery
- Claudia and Viren need to find Aaravos
- Rayla disappeared
The problem is, if I remember correctly from the trailer, these are actually one and the same. Everything is just “the Aaravos plot line”.
And look, that could be fine. He’s in the title!
Except, it’s literally the only thing we got. Characters have no problems aside from it. There are no arcs promised for this season. No development. Everything is so fun and goofy and happy-go-lucky.
It didn’t have to be.
What would I do?
- have Ezran struggle as a king. Maybe Opeli is trying to steal the power from him. By the end of the season, Ezran comes into his own as a ruler and sends Opeli away (if she doesn’t die in the finale or whatnot).
- have Soren struggle because everyone mistrusts him due to his father’s wrongdoings. He tries to prove himself extra hard, working himself to exhaustion, and hates himself. By the end of the season, he forgives himself for having loved his father and gains a healthy balance of humility and confidence.
- the Sun Queen wants to marry Amaya, but her subjects are starkly against it. She’s their ruler, she can’t marry a human, especially one who directly fought against them. By the end of the season, Amaya and the queen save the day together in a way that convinces the other sun elves to their queen’s future wife. The two marry happily.
- Viren and Claudia are probably fine as is. I like the addition of an elven boyfriend, at least conceptually.
- Callum is also fine, by and large - the mystery of the mirror works IMO. I would play maybe a bit more on him feeling alienated from other humans, one because he has innate magic now, and two because no one else appreciates his “nerdy” stuff. Maybe he considers that elves would understand him better and feels like he should go live in Xadia. By the end of the season he either leaves (making the arc still open for a potential next season) or accepts being different but still loved in his home. For that to work, he would need to be treated more coldly/with distrust by the ordinary people of Katolis. He’s the MC, so I feel like he should have more going on than just the external plot of the magic mirror.
- I dunno about Rayla since I dunno what her current situation is exactly.
I think I covered all the major characters. It took me whooping fifteen minutes.
Why, oh why, couldn’t we have gotten the same world and the same characters, but just a little bit more competently written story?
Will it get better in future episodes? Hope dies last, as they say.

How To Write Badly 101: The Season
Or, I review The Dragon Prince season 4, at the urging of a friend who is much more invested than I am. If you do not want to read immense salt and criticism, this is your warning.
My expectations for were extremely low and somehow the show managed to dig a tunnel beneath and go lower than I thought possible. Disclaimer: I've never been hugely invested, so I'm mostly amused about this game of how low can you go?
Claudia continues to be the only actual character of substance, while Once Characters Rayla and Soren slowly lose their potential. Never a Character Callum continues to be a lamp passed around the plot who gets things just for being a lamp.
A lamp character is a character who could be replaced by a lamp and there'd be minimal to no change on the actual story. It's pretty bad when your main protagonist is a lamp. What makes him even worse than, say, Alina in Grishaverse, is that Callum is treated like he's a special lamp when there's canonically zilch special about him. At least Alina is like, literally light and no one is like her. Callum is just an IKEA piece. He's a mage but cool, what does that cost him?
The time gap supposedly had major events happen off screen--especially romantically. Except... none of it is really explained, and thus it falls flat. Rayla and Callum broke up because there's never been tension between them and they offer each other nothing at all in a ship, which becomes apparent especially when they're together. Breaking them up is a way to at least manufacture tension. If you can call that tension, because their breakup added nothing at all to their character arcs.
Not that Callum's ever had an arc. But honestly, like, you need to show conflict. You need to have Callum saying that it triggers his fear of losing people, show him distressed more than just moping. Show him distressed by his actions, or present passivity as a flaw, but Callum has never had an actual flaw introduced so there's no place for this plotpoint to build besides "let's create tension for shippers."
Rayla... I like her. I want to like her even more, but her leaving is never explained. She seeks Claudia for... reasons? Presumably her parents? But y'know, you need to actually show consequences for leaving, and explain why she decided to come back more than just "the dragon queen was coming!" Was she lonely? What provoked her to come back? What are you trying to tell us? (Nothing. They don't have a story.)
Rayla's choice towards the end of the season was utterly ridiculous. The coins needed to be mentioned, like, way earlier in the season to remind us rather than just coming out of nowhere. Her grief needed to be explored, and her running away was like... an opportunity there, but it wasn't explored, so her choice to trade Terry for the coins had no resonance at the end. There were no consequences, no results, no impact of that choice. It was just empty. Like the show.
Terry... hoo boy. I want to like Terry. I kind of do despite how much of an obvious "morality pet" he is in the plot. His relationship with Claudia is very sweet, but again, it comes from nowhere. We have no exploration of what this means to them, no idea of what drew Terry and Claudia together, no idea of the basis of their emotional bond. You can't build a compelling ship without that.
Lastly, Terry's rebuke of Claudia towards the end was... bizarre, and nonsensical writing-wise. Like. The end of the last season showed a body. Claudia clearly killed people to bring her father back. So why is Terry horrified by Claudia taunting Rayla with fake coins about her parents, especially when it's to save his life? Terry also has previously killed someone who was about to kill Claudia. Make it make sense.
Soren... baby. You absolutely cannot cut the reunion between him and Viren. And yet! They did! I'm sorry but???? You absolutely can't skip that? For either Soren or Viren's arcs? Unless you're dropping both arcs, which it sure looks like you're doing.
Also, the plot. Nothing. Happened. The entire season. We need to free Aaravos in 30 days! At the end of the season, he still ain't free, and I'm begging him to appear because dear dragons someone needs to shake up this world.
Oh, okay, sometimes threats needed to happen. I wouldn't really call it plot, but there were occasional moments of pretend peril. The dragon went nuts in the end and almost killed them for... reasons I guess? I'm sorry but I don't understand why and the why doesn't matter in the end; it was the peril that was important because stakes! Except there aren't any.
Rule 1 of writing: anytime you have "and then" instead of "because" or "but" linking events/plot points, you're f*cked. It's boring.
Also, the sun elf subplot... was awful. Janai had no arc, and the story didn't parallel or link with the A plot. Her romance with Amaya is cute but again, the bond between them is not explored this season--it's told. Show us moments where they only have each other, moments where duty and love both tug at the heart!
The actual story itself was like an attempt to copy Black Panther, with the brother challenging the heir, but make it pointless because boring is clearly the vision they're aiming for. Because the Sun Elf Queen just wins because she's good, and people are good. Which is not itself a bad theme, but the point is that this whole plotline went nowhere and changed nothing for the story as a whole. It's dumb. Listen I am all for optimism in stories, especially those catered towards kids, but make it matter! Otherwise it's just boring!
And sure, maybe these things will matter towards the endgame? Maybe? But it should matter this season as well, and considering how poorly the show has done making everything matter so far, well, I am not holding my breath.

-AWW TERRY JUST CALLED HER LOVE
-ok so i’m guessing this means at some point he used dark magic to save soren
-YOUNG VIREN LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE SOREN

-also viren constantly saying that he had no choice to do whatever he did while callum as repeatedly said that he is afraid that aaravos is going to use him for evil and fears not having a choice at all
-gren what are you talking about someone’s getting married of course it’s good news
Tumblr media
-lol janai is so me i can’t even make the most basic of decisions

-“i can’t go with you to lux aurea but here’s a lightsaber”
-it’s funny that gren is going basically just to be amaya’s subtitles for us because there’s no reason why callum can’t translate for rayla
