I love how it’s the moment where Janai shows her wisdom and compassion as a leader (asking restitution of the architect in building a shrine rather than punishment in death) that her brother looses faith in her. It’s such good writing. Karim and Janai play out the theme of history as a narrative of strength vs love this season, with Karim representing strength as power, traditional and unyielding, and Janai representing strength as love and compassion. Amaya, Janai’s lover, calls for mercy. Karim, Janai’s brother, calls for vengeance. Janai walks a careful line, choosing mercy while still exacting justice. But Karim only sees weakness, only sees it as Janai turning her back on their ways. So this scene plays out the quote from season 2: “these moments of purest strength appear as weakness to those who don’t know better.” All Karim sees is weakness, because he doesn’t know better. But it is in this moment that Janai really begins to come into her own and shows the world what kind of queen she will be

History demands nothing!  I make history, it does not make me. Our past is behind us, and I will build a brighter future for our people than you can possibly imagine.
*looks at Amaya* And it will be beautiful.
Can I aplaud the writers for this dialog pls.
What a powerful quote.

My Dragon Prince Boards season 5 part 3
Tumblr media
Last but not least:
Episode 508
This episode was a blast! I got the honor to tackle all the plot B on this one, so while the rest of my unit was dealing with the hard emotions of Finnegrin's ship, I was kicking Karim's bottom, hahaha.
My first sequence was with Corvus (another best boy) telling Amaya about Janai's situation.
Tumblr media
One of the challenges of this sequence was to show Amaya in one hand scared and worried, but in the other hand keeping her shit together as the "de facto" leader of the human-elf settlement.
Also, I remember having this conversation with the crew about Green as a translator, he needs to stay neutral while he is translating, of course, but he is also Amaya's best friend, and has emotions too, I tried to show some of this things with little details trough the sequence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next sequence was Pharos talking to the Generals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried to make Pharos mimic Karim's gestures on this one. Was fun.
Then, Kim'dael and Karim are waiting for Miyana but, surprise!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Kim'dael is so fun to draw, just had a blast with her!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amaya charging full speed wearing Miyana's armor is always so fun to me. Please remember on episode 3 when Janai was telling Callum something like "you are like your aunt, just charging into danger" well, yeah! hahaha)
The last sequence of this episode, was the final part of this exchange.
Tumblr media
I love how Karim starts to get more and more desperate and his royal manners just disappear and he is gesticulating like crazy, hahaha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made my personal mission to have Amaya punching Karim as much as possible on this episode!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see when I boarded Kim'dael kiss to Janai I made her kiss the other cheek, but my unit director made the right call and made the kiss more visible, haha.
Tumblr media
I remember Arcane was recently out when we were working on this episode. And I was obsessed (still am) with all the Caitvi hugs, so I wanted to give Amaya and Janai a good hug too <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Pharos rescues Karim (Pay attention to the sequence, we worked really hard to keep Pharos present during all the conflict!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaaand that was my last sequence of season 5.
Hope you enjoyed this little walk trough my work on the show, I would love to do something like this again when seasons 6 and 7 are out!
Thanks for watching the show!

“At least Karim would lead the people with some sense of certainty . . .” I think it’s really interesting that Janai focused so much on Karim’s certainty in this quote back in season four, while she was agonising over whether or not to fully embrace being queen, because yes, Karim is much more certain and decisive than his sister, but we see that is actually its own weakness. While Janai often hesitates and deliberates (I loved her not being able to choose out of just two flower options, and Amaya’s exasperation; that was funny and cute) that also means that she looks deeper, thinks longer, and more often comes to better conclusions than Karim, who often just confidently charges into the wrong decisions. It feeds into this thing with the sun seed, where Janai has the patience to wait for it to grow (a metaphor for guiding her people into a new era, a different world, a more accepting world) even if it will take multiple lifetimes, and Karim does not. He takes short cuts. He cuts corners. He makes sketchy deals with forces he doesn’t understand or fully control. He might have led the people with certainty, but to no good end. Janai’s thoughtfulness is ultimately a greater strength than Karim’s certainty

This is actually funny because, rather than being a moment of contrast, it's yet another great parallel between Callum and Amaya:

I feel like there's something interesting going on with Queen Aditi the Merciful, Queen Aditi who is feared and respected by the dragons, Queen Aditi who abolished the duel of blood and ash, and her descendant Prince Karim the student of history, Karim who casually uses archaic Sunfire greetings, Karim who is obsessed with the glory of his people's past, and who demands a duel of blood and ash as a sacred ritual that no king or queen can abolish...
Like, Aaravos definitely removes Aditi at least in part because it perpetuates and intensifies the destabilization of Xadia by the draconic succession crisis, but I wonder if Aditi was also a turning point in some kind of Sunfire culture reformation. Aaravos calls her "arrogant," which could be simply because she was doing shit like stepping in to decide who would be the next dragon monarch, but could also potentially refer to any number of changes she may have instigated that were not in favor of his vision. Maybe to think you can change thousands of years of tradition and culture is arrogance? Either way, she did things like look at an apparently sacrosanct tradition of violence and say, "this is fucking stupid and we're not going to do it anymore."
Anyway, I think that's interesting in the context of s4's Sunfire plotline centered around holding respect and compassion for tradition but also looking to a future that may not include it? Also then s5's dichotomy of Karim addressing Sol Regem as "true King of the Dragons" and Kim'dael naming Janai as "true Queen of Lux Aurea," like... one of those is Aditi's legacy and the other is something older and more brutal, that Aditi may have been pushing away.

Zealot barbarian’s greatsword, painted with more care and with actual celestial script this time. I’m trying to find a nice middle ground between my art styles.

My Dragon Prince Boards season 5 part 2
Tumblr media
(I love Soren, he is my golden boy <3)
Episode 505
The first sequence of the episode is mine, when Callum, Rayla, Zym and Ezran are talking about their next steps.
This one was hard because the space at the top of the Storm Spire is so Small the character barely fit, hahahaha.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed 2 things the most about this sequence, first the little moments of Rayla and Callum on screen. Building and working trough their dynamic on the season was a fun challenge for all the board teams. I tried to channel "Proud older siblings" on this one (after all, look how much Ezran has grown!)
Tumblr media
The other thing I enjoyed is the difference on their approach for Callum and Ezran. Callum choosing the "quicker" (?) option of killing Aaravos, Ezran staying firm on his ideals of no violence. A interesting dynamic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My next sequence was with Zubeia and Soren.
Tumblr media
I love Soren, he is hands off my favorite character of the show (Amaya and Janai are tied in a close second place!) Jesse Inocalla is a fantastic voice actor, his range is incredible!
Tumblr media
I also love his relationship with Zubeia. This two are best friends, and no one can convince me of the opposite!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next sequence is with Claudia and her team. Viren is awake, but catatonic, and Claudia is starting to lose hope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, Terry is too good for this world <3
Next sequence is a Karim one. This little rat, I love/hate this man. This is a small sequence when he tells Pharos about his plan to get the Sun seed to heal Sol Regem. A funny thing to do in this episode was work on Karim's body language, keep him regal all the time, stiff and dramatic. A lot of controlled hand gestures, such an idiot <3
Tumblr media
Then I had the sequence when they arrived to the Blood Moon temple.
Tumblr media
Again, more dramatic shenanigans, and fun lighting. Karim is just a drama queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My last sequence of the episode was with corrupted Zubeia :(
Tumblr media
So those where my sequences for episode 505. Next post will be for 508!

Rewatching season 4 and thinking about how you’ve got the bit with Janai having her crisis and the whole “At least Karim would lead the people with some sense of certainty” thing, how Karim and Janai work so well as foils for each other, and this thing the Sunfire elves have going on about certainty and strength, and the penchant Karim (who is a character fixated on and representing the conservative traditional) has for strong decisive gestures over even carefully considered plans, like how he steamrollers Miyana when she tells him that while some Sunfire elves are unhappy with Janai’s progressive attitude and policies, they aren’t ready for open revolt, and throws down a flashy and dramatic challenge to his sister, the way he demands “Fight me! Defeat me! Prove the throne should be yours!” during his duel with Janai, as if that kind of attitude proves the virtues of a leader, when in reality it is Janai’s mercy, something Karim no doubt considers weak, and a demonstration of her uncertainties and doubts that he would think makes her a weak ruler, when in reality her ability to stop and think and consider and show mercy makes her a far better leader than he could ever be. It all reminded me in an odd way of how when Viren didn’t like the idea of Ezran being king in season one and set Soren the task of killing the princes, he says to Soren “But if we are led by a child king . . .” and Soren questioningly goes “He will make bad choices?” and Viren’s response is “He will make weak choices.” The emphasis is on weak, not bad, being such an interesting moment. And when Ezran does take the throne, he refuses to wage war on Xadia, exactly what Viren wanted to do, was willing to kill a child and seize the throne to do. Because that’s what Viren considers the ‘strong’ choice. But Opeli points out “Peace will require just as much strength as war” something Viren could never see. The way the villains in this show keep putting emphasis on the ways they consider the protagonists weak and themselves strong, and how that plays into Harrow’s thesis of “these moments of purest strength appear as weakness to those who don’t know better”, inverting it, so that the ways that the shows antagonists think they are proving themselves strong are in fact proving the opposite
