I just watched the Jurassic Park to Jurassic World special that was on last night. When they showed the triceratops scene I remembered this photo of me. It was taken during spring trip 2000 (I was 17) at the Jurassic Park area in Universal Orlando. It was soooooo realistic and I was beyond thrilled to be there that I cried.

I am a Masters Research Fellow for the University of Texas at El Paso, and I am currently helping with the Orlando database. This database is meant to be a comprehensive digital humanities project which documents female authors from the British isles or associated with the British isles. My focus is the era of 1968-present. I was wondering if you have any author suggestions we could look into from that time period, especially women of color!

I'd put in a vote for Josephine Saxton, who is, I'd say, an overlooked and unfairly forgotten writer who is a woman of colour.

And actually, all of these women are important writers -- L to R Josephine Saxton, Gwyneth Jones and Lisa Tuttle (originally from Texas but UK from the late 70s). Photo circa 1985 at a Forbidden Planet signing.

Halloween Horror Nights

So, last night I attended my first Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) event. I've lived in Orlando for years, but have never gone because I'm a wimp and get scared easily. But The Last of Us got me for this year, how could I not go see Joel and Ellie fight off some clickers in real life, right?

I'll save TLOU to the end if you want to skip to that (or don't want to get spoiled).

Mr rhoorl and I had a plan that was basically to do all of the TLOU stuff this visit. We have a pass so we're going to be able to go a few more times, which is nice because I didn't feel pressured to do it all in one night.

We ended up getting to do all five scare zones throughout the park. While they all had distinct themes, they were all connected via the event icon (the master of ceremonies, if you will), Dr. Oddfellow. There's some HHN lore around this character, which I still need to read about for my return trips but think of him like a crazed circus entrepreneur.

I only got photos during the first scare zone because it was still light out. I had a friend tell me that the performers target you if you're on your phone, so I put it away. I then made very aggressive eye contact at the performers basically to say I see you and you see me so don't scare me... but that approach didn't work. 🤣 HHN uses fog effects to it's advantage, there were times I was walking and could not see in front of me and someone would pop out. Eek!

New this year, the Death Eaters descended upon Diagon Alley in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter section of the park. This was so cool and they were so intimidating and scary! Some people brought their wands and tried to duel with them which was fun to watch. They also sought out anyone who had a tattoo of the dark mark.

There was a show called Nightmare Fuel Revenge Dream that was pretty cool. Lots of dancers and aerial performers doing their thing to metal and electronica. We got very lucky because we were amongst the last people to get in for our performance before it reached capacity and because they were running out of space, we got to sit in a reserved section that was empty - so we got really good seats. Yay! Unfortunately, they didn't allow photos during the performance.

Ok now to the TLOU stuff!

My husband and I made a beeline to the TLOU house first thing. We were so pumped, especially after seeing on Instagram that Neil Druckmann had been at Universal earlier in the week to see the final product. It made me feel like if he’s signing off on this, then it must be good. For those who have played the game, the house is set in the Pittsburgh level of the game.

We waited about an hour and then made our way inside. I’ll be honest with you, with this being my very HHN and my first haunted house since I was in high school (a long time ago), I’m probably not the most reliable narrator for this house but I can tell you I had a lot of fun. I noticed Joel in the very first room we were in and I immediately shot my shot at him and said “I love you Joel, protect us!” Like, I had to. He was wearing the green flannel shirt, like COME ON.

There were several clickers and runners throughout the first few rooms that would pop out. While I knew that the performers could not touch you, I was surprised by how close they got when they popped out. The good news about that was I was able to see the masks pretty close up haha. The bloater they had in the house (I think there were at least two, maybe a third but I may have had my eyes closed), it looked freaking awesome!

At one point we see Ellie, ushering us along to safety - the performer looked great and was so convincing. We then spotted Joel up on the second floor of a house protecting us because that’s what Joel does. Again, I yelled my appreciation. My thirst reigned supreme over my terror. There were a few more scares on the way out but we made it to safety!

It was all a blur but I had a blast going through the house and can’t wait to go back. Now that I’ve gone through it once, I know what to expect. My wedding anniversary is in October and our gift to each other this year is going to be a behind-the-scenes tour where you can walk through the houses with the lights on. TLOU is one of the houses on the list and I’m so excited to do that because I know that Universal and Naughty Dog have put so many Easter eggs in there. A friend of ours said that at one point you could see Joel’s backpack and watch, but I was too overwhelmed to notice on my first walk-through!

There were two food booths with TLOU-themed food and drinks (there was definitely a mushroom theme with the savory items). You could sit and eat in a FEDRA-themed area which was cool. There were Firefly symbols and “look for the light” written everywhere. I stood in a super long line, but I got the “Left Behind Ravioli” which came in a food ration can that you can keep. It was cheese ravioli in a truffle cream with tempura Enoki mushrooms. It was actually pretty tasty and filling. We also got the Fedra Ration Bar which is essentially a scotcheroo but the coolest part is that it came wrapped in a ration card (which I also kept). The final food item we got was the Cordyceps Corndog which was a Korean cheese dog with truffle cream and sprouts. Theme park food booths can sometimes be hit or miss, but I loved all three of these items.

The decorations were on point. I really loved all of the details that went into this sign where you can see the evolution of the infected. I’ll try and get a photo of this in the daytime sometime.

There wasn’t a ton of TLOU merch compared to some of the other IP-related houses like Stranger Things or Chucky. But, I managed to get a shirt and a coaster along with an event t-shirt I can wear when I come back on my next visit.

I’m looking forward to checking out more of the event in my subsequent visits and catching more of the hidden details in the TLOU house as I get used to wear the scares are.

I am so confused.

Even when this lens was first released it was $850 brand new.

Does he think people aren't going to check current prices? Did he get scammed and overpay originally? Not to mention eBay gives you a suggestion for pricing.

I really wish I hadn't sold my lenses. There was a point where I had a major decline in my health and I could no longer make comedy for my main website. At the same time, my parents were getting sicker and needed more help. We were also struggling financially. I was so depressed and I was sure I'd never do photography again, so I sold most of my lenses.

We needed the money at that moment, but in the grand scheme of things, the lens money barely made a dent in our situation. Not to mention, we got a small inheritance from my grandmother soon after, so that increased my regret. It took me years of scrounging and saving to build up a collection of 5 lenses. None of them top of the line, but all of them a good value for their performance.

Thankfully I kept the lens I used to take pictures of Otis—my "puppy lens." But my ultra wide, my macro, my tele, and my portrait lens... all gone.

And now I am trying to figure out the cheapest way I can do what I want to do with photography and I'm remembering just how expensive this hobby is. But I think I need to figure this out because I have had a substantial boost in my mental health since I started taking photos again.

A good 50mm could serve several roles. I can add extension tubes for macro. It is about 75mm on an APS-C camera, which is good for portraits. The wide aperture would allow low light photography. Combined with my Otis lens, all I'd be missing is telephoto and ultra wide angle, but honestly I never did much of that anyway. Though ultra wide angle photography is probably the most fun you can have taking pictures—even if the photographic uses are rare.

I did get a Nifty Fifty for my trip to Orlando. I wanted to see if I could get away with using a $100 lens. For the price, it is surprisingly good. And it is the first lens I recommend to anyone starting photography—as almost every camera brand has its own version. But I had several issues trying to make it work for my needs.

It's not very sharp, which is actually fine for shots taken at a distance, but would be a deal breaker for product photos and macro shots which are very close up. Those require as much detail as possible, especially if you need to crop. When you are trying to show people the fine hairs on a bee's body, a soft image just isn't going to have the same impact.

It also does not nail focus consistently and it back focuses (it focuses more behind than in front). Which is a deal breaker for my efforts to use less energy. When I did my portrait shoot with Katrina, I had to do many test shots and look at them on the computer to make sure I was getting them in focus. I was going back and forth and getting up and down. In the end I had to use a smaller aperture and higher ISO to get increased depth of field. And even then the tip of her nose was soft in the photos. Not to mention the added noise from raising the ISO.

This Sigma is a wonderful lens. I'm trying to find a good deal used, but it's still out of reach for now. I have no idea what my financial future is right now and until I know for sure that my brother will release my inheritance in March, I have to be more careful with my budget.

I am going to sell all of my studio lighting gear and use those funds to help me set up a new studio upstairs. I'm hoping that will cover the new lights I will need, but I don't think it will be enough for a lens. Someone suggested a site where I can turn my yard into a dog park, so I am looking into that. I might also see if I can get some gigs restoring photos for people, but it is so difficult finding clients.

“It was, in a word, unbelievable. And in another, perhaps more acceptable word, heavy – very heavy. The youths – universally and collectively long-haired, bell-bottomed, braless hot panted, haltered and Hang Ten – began arriving with blanket rolls and seat cushions as early as five o’clock to find choice sears for a show still three hours away.

Then at 8 p.m., or close to starting time as any rock group ever has gotten, the house lights went out and Zeppelin exploded into life in a pink, purple and yellow electric haze and magnetized the audience. There was no second group on the billing to fill the gaps, because there were no gaps. Zeppelin and Zeppelin alone gave their audience two and a half solid hours of unremitting rock in one of the most professional rock shows we’ve seen. No light show, very little talk – just music.

And good music. Too often, audiences are disappointed with their favorite performers when they hear them live. Some groups just can’t cut it in a live performance, depending on complicated electronic studio mixing to make tapes and records sound good. No so with Zeppelin. They are good by themselves and powerful. They ripped through their greatest hits, including Whole Lotta Love and Living Loving Maid, and the moving drum solo on Moby Dick went on for at least 15 minutes. Zeppelin gave a well-timed presentation, leveling off around 9pm from their initial burst of energy, then coming back for a long and strong finale of selections that recaptured the crowd immediately and held them to the end.”
