Reason #1 of Why You Should Consider Fashion Merchandising at ODU

In the mandatory courses we have to take as Fashion Merchandising majors, we learned the necessary skills to help guide us throughout any career in fashion we choose to take. For example, each student was required to learn Microsoft Excel formulas in Retail Merchandising. This is essential because most companies need their employees to know Excel. Another class that we are required to take that could be beneficial to a specific career path is Trend Forecasting. Fashion Product Development taught us the steps to follow to create a fashion line. We also predicted future fashion trends and colors for upcoming seasons.

By taking these classes, we gained an abundance of knowledge in understanding the influences of trends. We can see and predict upcoming trends and colors that grow popular over time in fashion. As fashion merchandising students, it is crucial to distinguish between an all-time classic and a fad. If your goal is to work in the fashion industry, it is essential to determine a timeless piece and what people will want to buy in the upcoming seasons. Fashion forecasts are created a year in advance, so it is critical to know how to study and predict trends for a successful outcome in sales.

Looking around next time you go out, you might see more people wearing low-rise jeans and flare pants. If you didn’t know, these things have been a trend before. The funny thing about trends is that they always come back and reoccur. We learned at Old Dominion University that trends could be influenced by people, places, events, and social media by studying and practicing these techniques. In our course work, we have previously created many fashion forecast predictions demonstrating our fashion knowledge. To show you how much we have learned in the fashion merchandising program, we thought we would share with you what we believe will be hot and trendy in the upcoming months.

In the upcoming fall and winter months, you will see more: puffer jackets, brown leather, loafers, flare pants, cargo pants, Birkenstock clogs, lace layering, slipper Uggs, chunky sweaters, cowgirl boots, denim on denim, sweater vests, mini skirts, trousers, claw clips, and Dr. Martens. We believe these pieces will be trendy this fall/winter based on our predictions. Below we included photos of some of the products we previously talked about.

Schiaparelli gown

In my eyes, a Schiaparelli look should be an uncontested slam dunk. So for this look to, in my opinion, not fly quite as high as befits the beautiful work of Daniel Roseberry is almost a greater disappointment than an average look on its own. To opt for a designer that is known for its surrealism and its beautifully eerie ethereal strangeness but to tamp it down to what I mistook as a Vivienne Westwood gown and strip it of any possible Schiaparelli beautiful weirdness feels like a huge missed opportunity. Especially when it could have really been magical and interesting and a fashion risk for Taylor.

But I also understand that she had a vision. And she molded the designer to fit her and that vision.

It’s a look that I feel falls on an Easter Egg’s sharpened sword. The draping akin to tangled bedsheets, the Victorian cameo-esque appearance of the watch choker from afar, the dramatic opera gloves, the corset back, and the black and white colour scheme feel pulled from (or inspired by) what we now know is the forthcoming album formerly known as ‘TS11’: Tortured Poets Department. And if Taylor’s admission that this project has been in the works for the last two years is anything to go by, it also throws into sharp relief the schoolgirl plaids, the dark academia loafers, and the shadowy colour palette her street style has often centered on in recent months.

There are so many beautiful elements to pull apart here that feel sacrificial in the name of early evocation of what could be a scholarly-sounding (or perhaps sapient-sounding) album based on the cover and intro language. The gown has a beautiful shape (the waist cinching!) and is a fascinating colour choice that could read suffragette or bride depending on who’s asked (and isn’t that in itself an intentional diametric “Lavender Haze” worth dissecting?). But the black accessories (presumably in service of Tortured Poets) overcooks it. I think a low bun, single strand of diamonds, and closed toe pumps could have gone a long way in styling (I’ll let the trendy gloves stay - in combination with the white gown they’re giving Princess Kate at the BAFTAs, no?).

The biggest point of all is that Taylor understands the connect between her music and her style (I should know - I spend 350+ pages talking about it in my upcoming book Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras). She also understands the role her style plays in cementing moments in her career to milestones. This moment. This gown. It joins a trio of looks as her most memorable and significant: her AOTY wins. This look will forever be enshrined in slideshows depicting the new precedent she has set for any artist - male or female. And what a win it is for an album I love so much. Knowing that, it feels even more fascinating to me that she’d use this moment as a bridge to another project and not honouring the album in question.

maybe even just walking out his apartment with a wife pleaser and baggy jeans on as a fit alone

Mikasa Ackerman: 🍒💿📷🃏

we all know for a fact that Mikasa can DRESS

she just has an eye for fashion and has a unique style of her own

one that isn’t over the top, in terms of being a spectacle, but just well put together and tailored to HER. a girl you 110% give a second glance

she is a girlie who LOVES wearing any skirt whether it be long, midi, mini or knee length she LOVES them

most of her pieces are pretty free flowing with lots of different silhouettes

absolutely loves a good leather boot, pair of mary janes, or platform loafers

she literally could wear a trash bag and make it look like it’s the next trend

Armin will literally never be free of the soft light academia aesthetic

the cable knit sweaters, soft cardigans, and sweater vests will forever have a hold on him

but what college boy Armin loves more than anything is a good quarter zip or quarter button up

Connie is a literal fashionista

he probably is tiktok famous for his fit check videos and adventures at the thrift stores

the street style aesthetic was MADE for Connie

knows how to put pieces that may not look ideal together into a cohesive fit

LOVES JORTS and swears he made them trendy again

and wearing jerseys of teams he has no clue of , but it’s for the fit so who cares

Sasha Braus: 🍰🪩🗽🧸

the DEFINITION of downtown girl or coming of age movie in a city aesthetic

Sasha lives for the nostalgia of 90s pieces and it shows in her clothing

comfort is also a huge factor that plays into Sasha’s outfits

color is another component that makes Sasha’s outfits HER outfits

LOVES a good brown leather jacket

Sasha honestly though has a hard time sticking to just ONE specific style and will wear whatever feels good for her

Marco Bodt: 🍙🪴♠️🍊

Marco is a soft boy at heart but he’s traded in the traditional sweaters vests for hardy collared jackets

he absolutely LOVES PLAID

and loves layering his button ups with his worn out thrifted jackets

has a more warm palette in terms of colors and leans more towards earthy tones

omg ive done this before some I stand by some I retract so lets get into it!!!

pup I stand by wears either this dirty orange or yellow converse and crocs. she loves crocs. she doesnt get the charms anymore because she loses them. she doesnt wear shoes all that often because she likes being barefoot when she can so its really these + random flip flops and sandals shes collected over the years.

kitten is still wearing riding boots and black forces. devious woman. but in general she has lots of platform style shoes just because she likes stomping bitches and wears lots of baggy pants n mini skirts so it makes the outfit.

bunny wears lots of heels and sandals, never was a fan of closed toe shoes and rafe hates them so she really doesnt wear it. loves the sugar baby cork sandals too (iykyk)

foxy wears ugly ass loafers and these weird ugly shoes that are trendy now but she used to get made fun of for. they're comfy and ugly and she wears them with everything.

lamb wears white mary janes and also these hello kitty converse that are her pride and joy because its one of the few things she gets to wear that aren't super formal. most of her shoes are just church shoes.

hi babes, what an honor for the trust thank you very much. I absolutely hate dressing for summer too but here I have gathered all my saved favorites. by now my wardrobe is 90% thrifted but I have also added some clothes that I own and love. zara loafers I get lots of compliments on (although not the most comfy). I dislike wearing sandals so I wear my mothers vintage flats that look similar to the shoes in (23.) I think I will mostly just end up wearing something similar and basic like (21.) because that's what wear for work. If going out I love love a good statement pant where I can just put on a basic t shirt with it and bag to spice it up (I also love basic Levis 401s). I find lots of items on vestiare, depot and etsy. best thing is always to wear what makes you feel good (sorry for being cliche) and not buy too much trendy clothes although I am very aware do that everything is so expensive even thrifting. hope this was somewhat a help lol. please just sent me a message if you need any links. regardless I am sure you will look like a million bucks this summer all on your own <3

💕VALENTINES DAY IS A WEEK AWAY!💕

So guess what?! :D

I’ll be posting daily One-Shots of Narry in very Valentine scenarios for 7 days!

None of these are canon! They’re just cool “what if’s” since Narry is probably doomed to be forever lonely 😔.

Anyways~

DAY 1: Crowded Places

Narry participated in a party once; in our current timeline he might have already joined more than four, perhaps none, but ONE was enough to realize his hatred towards crowded places, of every kind. “Hatred”? No. Not really. Maybe it’s discomfort. Maybe fear.

The music is the latest hit of this year, so was the next, and the following. The taste was generic — made to entertain most of the crowd because of how trendy it is — so it was no surprise that everyone was still moving their bodies to a rhythm that matched their hearts more than the beat. Narry wished there was more variety so he could test his memory… Perhaps he could just list out the pitch, the notes, maybe the specific riffs to the bass that carried the harmony.

An arm brushes against his. A sandal comes close to stepping on his black loafers. Hair slashes across his back. An empty plastic cup tips and touches against his chest.

He really needs to stop closing his eyes, these sensations were becoming more intense without his vision and it was making him shudder when he isn’t even feeling cold.

While pursing his thin lips, the brunette tilts his head down and cracks both of his eyes open, looking straight at his feet. There’s about a two step radius that he could shuffle around in. (Disregarding the shoulders that nudged past that small border.) He made sure to straighten his body like a rod, taking less space to give himself, and others, more room.

It’s alright, Narry, just listen to the music. The music is loud, this room is big. It’s alright, Narry, just listen to the echo of the music. If the music echoes, then the room is spacious; it’s big.

“Oh my goood, have you heard what Juliet just did to her new boyfrieend?~” A random girl slurred out, her eyes hazy as she pressed herself closer to her other female companion, trying to be more audible in the crowd.

Narry blinks, his brows furrowing. Music, Narry, music. “You know how to dance, huh?” A man with a buzz-cut hair chuckled as he swayed along with a some blonde woman. The duo was too close for his liking; it’s almost as if those words were directed to him.

“Hahaha! Yeaaah!” The other squeaked, her face flushed and hair a mess from all the grooving, “I was in the dance team when I was in high school!” She grinned suddenly throwing her hands up, ultimately hitting against Narry’s arm without her knowledge.

Narry writhed as he began to inch away from them. He steps out of the center of his small safe space, and it led him into bumping against another stranger. And like a game of Pong, he bumped into another as he apologized. Where’s the music? Narry’s eyes whirled around, looking for safety. Why can’t I hear it?! Where is it?!

…Screw the music. Screw the size of the room. It’s too cramped here— WHY is he here?

“Narry!” The man jumped — not out of fear, but more in relief.

Music. He’s hearing the music.

“Narry! Oh god, what are you doing here?!” Narry’s lover pushed through the wall of people, concern driven all over their face. Before Narry could even reply, they were already taking action. “Common, let’s get you out of here!” They yelled over the crowd.

The yellow eyed man kept himself close behind them. He’s usually much more… organized than this. Thankfully enough, he felt all of the tension release as he stumbled slightly on random rubbish that’s been tossed on the hard tiles of the club. He’s usually much more autonomous than this. When finally reached the door — he forgot there was one (he’s usually a lot more aware than this) — he pries his eyes away from the textured ground and then up at the moon, the stars, his lover. Suddenly, his head was clear.

“Gosh…” Narry groaned, lowering his head into his hands, “I’m usually a lot more… normal than this.” He shuddered, his shoulders sinking slightly.

“Narry, you are being normal.” His hands are stuffy. Music. Listen for the music. “You’re just overstimulated, alright?” he looks up from his hands. He hears the echo of their voice. It’s spacious; the world is big. “Don’t bash yourself for that.” They smiled, clearly hazy from the fun he probably just pulled them away from, but they seemed clear in the head enough to mean what they’re saying.

Once he nodded, the other sighed, running a hand through their hair as they looked down the empty sidewalk and streets before glancing back. “Why are you here, Narry? I thought you said you’ll just stay at home for tonight,” they frowned slightly with concern.

Why? Why… Narry was quiet for a moment, the most knowledgeable being in the world seemingly forgotten. “Oh— uh…” his hands naturally ran down to touch his pocket, feeling the contour of his cellular device. Right. “I wanted to pick you up,” he mumbled, “You texted me a while ago, saying that your friends left earlier while you guys were at the pub, and I didn’t want you to go back with an Uber — and by yourself. I came — brought the car — and thought I could find you easily if I go inside myself instead of waiting. And—“ he paused, “I got stuck.”

His lover chuckled, before they reached down and took his gloved hands into theirs. “That’s really thoughtful of you, Narry… thank you.” They gave him a closed eyed smile, and Narry couldn’t help but reciprocate, albeit a bit shy because of the earlier predicament.

“Are you good for a hug?” They widened their arms for him, and Narry paused.

Of course he couldn’t say “no”. And with a small hum of encouragement, he bent himself down and enveloped themselves into each other’s warmth.

The hug was tight; it gave him no space to move, and the entirety of the hug were just sensations he wouldn’t usually agree to. And yet… he didn’t mind it.

Narry has a fear towards crowded places, but his only exception only ever seemed to be their comfort.

Since the shoes have not been altered other than by colour, go ahead and do whatever with them as far as more colours or adding patterns, they are a base game shoe easily found in Sims 4 Studio. The suit jacket is from the Cats and Dogs EP (required), and I spent a lot of time adding the patterns and colours, so please, go ahead and recolour, but also be considerate and link this post as the original pattern designs. Saguaro Outfit Analysis

Wow, I’m so pleasantly surprised at the positive reception to the 1950s analysis I made for Saguaro! I’ll be referencing parts of that post a lot in this outfit analysis, because I think the historical references in Saguaro’s clothes are really important.

Usual disclaimer: I am not an expert on fashion, this is an analysis based on my own knowledge, research, and passion on the subject. If there are any corrections or additions you’d like to make, please let me know! ^_^

Saguaro is depicted to be a “fashionable and cool” man- and he is! He balances out the colors in his outfit very well, it’s clear he cares a lot about his appearance. I mentioned in the 1950s post that Saguaro has an almost outdated style, but he twists it to be contemporary and trendy.

His blouse looks reminiscent of a chef’s uniform due to the buttons and white collar/sleeves, as the uniform is traditionally white. His rolled up sleeves look casual and are the universal signal of a working man. It makes sense because he’s the Home Ec teacher! The vertical pink and yellow stripes give him an old-fashioned look (reminiscent of the 1950s) that looks cute and inviting.

The buttons on his collar may look odd, but it is an actual thing: a button-down collar. This style of collar originated from polo, and the buttons would keep the collar away from the players face. Due to this origin, the button-down collar is the most casual type of collar. But since it keeps the collar down, it gives a dress shirt a crisp yet casual appearance. Like his rolled up sleeves, the button-down collar signifies a working man.

Something I want to note is how he wears his Teacher Tag on his left breast pocket. The ONLY other teacher that wears their teacher tag is Ms. Tyme, who is known as a stricter and serious teacher. I think that this is Saguaro’s way of showing how he wants to be seen as an authority figure. He puts his tag front and center, right over where the heart is believed to be (the heart is more in the center, but it leans toward the left side). He’s very genuine and passionate, but the desire to be taken seriously remains.

His purple suspenders are traditional and conservative, and also holds up his apron. This design choice has to be purposeful, as it is a very unique placement. I mention in my 1950s post that it the ‘masculine’ imagery of suspenders and the ‘feminine’ imagery of an apron shows Saguaro’s internal battle with his insecurities regarding gender roles. Edit: Also GENIUS reblog made me realize that his suspenders are purely for aesthetics from the way they're clipped. Saguaro is just that bitch and i love him even more

The apron, with a cute bow, is held up by the suspenders and also have several cute embroidery patches. A close look at the model shows the stitches on the outside, which makes me think he sewed them on himself. Jigglypuff is another cute and primarily female Pokémon. It’s Japanese name is Purin, which is likely referencing Japanese Crème Pudding. Pineapples (tricky to see unless you're at the right angle) are said to symbolize warmth and hospitality, which is perfect for him!

His pants brings the outfit all together with a deep wine-ish color. This darker color makes me wonder if he wanted to “ground” the cuter elements of his outfit. If it weren’t for his blouse and the apron, his outfit would have an air of ‘brooding’ seriousness, as he puts it.

The shoes were the immediate signal that Saguaro *knows* fashion. Maybe I’m silly for obsessing over his shoes haha, but they are so good. He wears loafers, with a silver buckle is too unique to be a horsebit buckle. Any real-life counterparts I found of his shoes are very high end, reminiscent of Italian brands. Saguaro low-key has the best shoes of the Paldean cast, I find him to be very stylish. He definitely knows what styles he likes considering how specific these shoes are.

Okay, phew. After looking at all of his clothes, let’s talk a bit about the colors. From 1953 to 1957, pale pink was extremely popular in America due to “Mamie” Eisenhower, the First Lady at the time. Pastel green, blue, pink, and yellow were very popular pastel colors at this time, adorning everything from automobiles to kitchens to bathrooms. Saguaro’s blouse, that sports pink and yellow stripes, feels like a references to the 50s and its focus on femininity. The deep red-ish color of his pants is very fascinating to me. It has similarities to a wine color or maroon, but other way, this color is associated with the rich, powerful, sophisticated, and ambitious. The color is serious and demands a level of respect. It’s very timeless, and the deeper red is very different from the youthful and bubbly pink. I feel very confident that this color is one of Saguaro’s ways of trying to be an authoritative figure, while also not pushing it.

Saguaro’s color palette does actually show off how trendy he is. Many fashion designers reference Pantone color reports in their designs, and vice versa. Color of the Year/or season is determined by fashion runways, trends, and social media. In 2022, the color of the year was Very Peri. In 2023, it was Viva Magenta. Looking back at Saguaro’s palette, doesn’t it seem awfully coincidental that he wears similar colors? Now, SV was released in November 2022. But as I mentioned earlier, Pantone chooses colors based of fashion trends. If Saguaro is as fashion forward as I think he is (which he canonically is considered to be) I wouldn’t be surprised if he caught onto certain colors early. That’s part of what makes certain people seem fashionable or trendy. And because of the timelessness of the deep red of his pants, and the vintage colors of his blouse, he can honestly be trendy most of the time because these colors never go out of fashion.

Something I noticed when looking at all the teachers is that Saguaro and Miriam are the only ones who have silver details- all the other teachers (except Hassel, Jacq, and Clavell, which have no details. This is purposeful but I’ll save it for another post. Altho Hass DOES have golden eyes...) have golden details. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but my theory is that Saguaro and Miriam are both struggling with who they are. Miriam was giving up her dream to be a teacher, Saguaro is battling insecurities- I think it’s significant that they both wear silver. The other teacher have their own struggles too, of course, but it feels like Saguaro and Miriam are battling with who they fundamentally are as a person. Their identities are unknown to themselves, and this is marked with silver.

Overall, I think Saguaro’s fashion is a deliberate balance between “casual and approachable” and “respectable authoritative figure.” It’s also the blend of traditionally masculine and feminine fashion, with the suspenders & loafers vs aprons & bows. It’s such an insane balancing act that seems obvious in hindsight, but i never realized until this analysis. Character designer is so underrated. Am I overthinking Saguaro’s design? Yeah, probably. But all designs are made deliberately, and I think it hit the mark with several of my points. He’s a very complicated character, and I love him so much haha \(//∇//)\

Miami Vice

The clothes worn on Miami Vice had a significant influence on men's fashion and popularized Italian men's fashion in the United States. In every episode, Crockett and Tubbs wore 5 to 8 outfits appearing in shades of pink, blue, green, peach and fuchsia. Designers such as Vittorio Ricci, Gianni Versace, and Hugo Boss were consulted in keeping the male leads looking trendy. Don Johnson's typical attire of Italian sport coat, T-shirt, white linen pants, sockless loafers and Ray Ban of Model L2052 or Ray-Ban Wayfarers. In the first season he wore an 18k Rolex Day-Date "President" model, than Ebel won the contract for the remaining seasons.
