“JESUS, YOU LOOK LIKE JOHN WICK!” Gojo spoke, both arms cluttered with various snacks as he exited the open kitchen.
Nanami exhaled a tired breath, loosening the patterned tie he wore, showing off his bruised knuckles. He was late. Forty minutes late to be exact and it was not something he was happy about. The old elevator dinged closed behind him, “It’s not mine.” The blond spoke bluntly, taking a few steps to enter the loft completely.
Closer to him than he was before, Gojo fully took in Nanami’s taut form and noticed the partial disheveled appearance he sported. His fully cotton, gray dress shirt was untucked from his black slacks, brown belt shifted slightly and his suit jacket had tiny splatters of blood on the cuffs. Gojo opened his mouth, ready to ask what had gone down, but thought against it once Nanami gave him a look that told him it wasn’t in his best interest to do so.
“Uh, I’ll go tell the others you’re cleaning up before joining us.” He settled on, giving Nanami one last look of concern before continuing his walk to the movie room.
The industrial warehouse the boys managed to own was split into four levels; level one was the shop, two was the kitchen, living room, movie room, and Nanami, Geto, and Gojo’s bedrooms. Level three was Toji, Choso, and Sukuna’s rooms, the gym, and their office spaces. Level four was the roof with a pool, a garden with a greenhouse, and a lounge area.
Nanami thought about throwing Hiroshima off the roof, but that wouldn’t be good for him in the long run. Fighting was not something he enjoyed like some of his roommates did. He found it to be too messy and too much work. Extra work that Nanami did not like doing. He thinks that’s what made him beat his supplier the way he did. If it wasn’t for him, Nanami wouldn’t have had to show him a lesson nor be late to the hangout his friends were having. Or ruin his favorite suit jacket with Hiroshima’s blood. Tired sighs heaved from Nanami’s chest in intervals as he moved around his room, taking his clothes off and preparing to shower.
He washed quickly, cringing at the watery red color circling his blood free drain. The flesh on his knuckles was raw and bruised, messy cuts lining the tops of them. Those will hurt like a bitch in a few days. Facing the back of his shower, Nanami bent over, palms pressed to the wall and head hanging. He let the hot water sting his skin and fog his senses. It was all he could do to try and ease the tension in his mind. There was an unsatisfied hunger that burned Nanami’s chest and suffocated his lungs. One full of rage and chaos, a deep itch to release his stress and trauma on others. Namami wasn’t sure when, or why, those urges occur, he just knows that it is very bad if he were to act upon those urges.
So, he played ’quiet boy’ Nanami and kept a low profile, selling his supply and finishing school. But Hiroshima just tipped him over the edge today and he was struggling to hold on. Releasing a deep sigh, Nanami pushed off the wall and washed up, cleaning the blood as best he could. The bathroom filled with steam as fog billowed out once he opened the door. Towel wrapped around his waist and one around his neck, Nanami wiped the mirror before pulling out the peroxide and cotton balls.
Just when he went to apply the cleaning solution, a knock was on his door. Annoyed that it was one of the boys, Nanami opened the door prepared to cuss out the unlucky bastard when he saw Y/n on the other side instead. The dark skin girl gave him a cheeky smile, her eyes shamelessly flickering over his body. Nanami looked down at her and swallowed tightly. Honestly? He was attracted to the girl. Plan and simple. But Geto got to her first and ever since, Nanami has backed off until Geto’s recent fuck up with Y/n’s ex-friend. Meaning, all bets are off right?
“Hi Ken Ken.” She cooed softly.
A small breath tugged at Nanami’s throat as he cleared it and wet his lips, an action not missed by her.
“Hey peach,” the door opened a bit wider, “come in.”
Y/n grinned and happily entered his clean room. This wasn’t her first time in the big space, but it was her first with him partially naked. Nanami watched her lay eyes on the peroxide and she turned to him accusingly.
“Did you hurt yourself? Gojo said you needed a minute. What’s wrong Ken?” Her concerns sent tiny chills rolling down Nanami’s shoulders and blood to rush towards his half-hard cock.
That gentleness of hers, the obedience she displays around him, makes Nanami’s head stuffy with desire.
“I’m okay, peach. Just had some work to deal with.” He chose his words carefully, not wanting her to notice the tension in his voice.
Y/n’s eyes narrowed as she picked up on his hesitancy to elaborate but she sighed and relaxed her shoulders instead. “Come on, bear. Let me see your hands.” She commanded, heading into his bathroom.
Nanami chuckled but closed his bedroom door and followed her. She was easy to follow around, Sukuna calling her ‘Little Miss Bossy’ for a while just to piss her off.
Y/n tapped the counter for Nanami to hop up there, to which warranted her a look from him. “Peach, I am too tall and too big for this counter.”
“But I can’t get up there!” She went to argue, but Nanami hushed her up.
Big hands gripped the flesh of her thick waist to pick her up and place her on the counter in question. She held a look of surprise with her mouth dropped slightly open in awe. Hands still on her body, Nanami gripped her hips and pressed his forehead to her own.
“Ask next time, peach.” His voice heady with a need that only grew as he watched her nod in submission. A small ‘Yes sir’ coming from her lips that had him holding back a moan.
Nanami stayed liked that a few seconds longer than necessary and then pulled away to hand her the peroxide and cotton balls. They worked quietly for a few moments, Y/n’s hands caressing Nanami’s wounded ones while he watched her fondly.
“So big.”
It was quiet and quick, Nanami barely heard it but he did. He saw Y/n look up at him in shock at her unintentional comment, the desire and embarrassment swirling in her eyes, but before she could ruin the moment, Nanami stopped her.
With a hand gripping the side of her neck, Nanami pulled Y/n closer and whispered on her lips. “Tell me you want me to stop.”
His right hand began mapping out her body, gliding around her exposed tummy before slipping a hand under her shirt and palming her breasts through her bra. The action causing Y/n to arch into him and spread her legs wider.
“Y/n.” Nanami groaned, pulling one breast out of her bra and massaging the nipple, pulling at the hard bud.
All she could do was moan and gasp in want. “Please Kento—” another gasp being taken from her as he began massaging the other one “—don’t stop!”
That was all Nanami needed to bring Y/n’s lips into a devouring kiss, hand tightening around her throat and the other tugging her shirt off. It was hot and weighted, desperate hands grabbing at one another as their lips pushed and pulled. Too much was going on, too many emotions were threatening to take over Nanami as he tried to hold on.
“Wait! Nanami stop—we gotta stop.” Y/n spoke breathlessly, pulling from the kiss, hands splayed across his bare chest.
The man groaned, blindly trying to find her lips again.
“We can’t do this. I can’t,” she cried, panic heavy in her eyes, “I’m sorry.”
Oh.
Nanami snapped out of his haze immediately, pulling away soon after. “You’re right. I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking—”
“It’s not your fault Nami!” Y/n rushed to console her friend, but it might’ve been too late.
Silence befell the two friends, breathing quiet as they came down from their intense session. Nanami watched as Y/n pulled her bra back up and fixed her shirt before hopping down from the counter. She casted a solemn look to him but didn’t speak as she left his room.
Casting his eyes up, they locked onto his reflection in the mirror and for the second time that day, his hands were bloody once more.

There are many potential causes of hearing loss
There are many potential causes of hearing loss. Consonants, on the other hand have higher frequencies, and are harder to hear. This device transmits sound directly into the auditory nerve via electrodes surgically implanted into the cochlea. This type of hearing loss is temporary, and results in a less severe form. Many different types of hearing aid are available and an audiologist will advise as to which type best suits the needs of the individual. The successful treatment of hearing loss depends on the cause. The term "hard of hearing" describes a condition that is less severe than deafness. This type of hearing loss is more devastating, and is usually more permanent.
Although the sounds heard tend to be of a buzzing or electronic nature, it can be very useful when used in combination with lip reading. In the brain, these signals are deciphered into meaningful information, such as language or music with qualities like volume and pitch. Conductive hearing loss is the result of the interference of sound transmission from the outer ear to the inner ear. A normal hearing range usually ranges from 0 to 140 dB. Hearing is a complicated process involving both the sensitivity of the ear, as well as the ability to understand, and interpret the speech. Common causes include, inner ear infections, accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, excessive wax, damage to the eardrum by infection or an injury, or otosclerosis. Sounds that are louder than 90 dB can be uncomfortable to hear. Some causes of sensorineural hearing loss can also be improved. These can be divided into two basic types, called conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. The severity of hearing loss is assessed on how well a person can hear the frequencies or intensities most often associated with speech. . An individual with hearing in the normal range can hear sounds that have frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hertz. If no cure is successful, a hearing aid for one, or both ears usually helps, whether the loss is a result of conductive or sensorineural problems..
A bacterial infection of the middle ear can be treated with antibiotics; blockages of the outer and middle ears can be cleared; damaged eardrums can be repaired surgically; and ossicles affected by otosclerosis can be replaced with artificial bones. When we hear sounds, we really are interpreting patterns of air molecules in the form of waves. The sad part is, that hearing loss is the most preventable disability in the world. The ear is able to pick up these waves, and convert them into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. Hearing loss is the number one disability in the world; approximately 28 million Americans suffer some type of hearing loss. Hearing loss can happen in either frequency or intensity or both. Deafness is used to describe an individual who has approximately 90 dB or greater hearing loss. A whisper is around 30 dB, and normal conversations are usually 45 to 50 dB. The incidence of hearing loss is greater in men, than women. When a hearing aid lipstick tube packaging Suppliers does not give adequate amplification, as with profound deafness, a cochlear implant can help. In addition, 15 of every 1000 people under the age of 18 have a hearing loss, and nearly 90% of people over age 80 have a hearing impairment.
Severity of loss can best be described as mild, moderate, severe, or profound.Hearing loss is prevalent in modern societies as a result of the combined effects of noise, aging, disease, and heredity. Common causes include, age-related hearing loss, injury to the inner ear hair cells as a result of trauma or noise, abnormal pressure in the inner ear, stroke, benign lesions, and brain tumors. Extreme sounds that are 120 dB or louder can be quite painful and can result in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Since consonants express most of the meaning of what we say, someone who cannot hear high frequency sounds will have a hard time understanding speech. Intensity, or loudness, is measured in decibels. Sensorineural hearing loss is due to damage to the pathway from the hair cells of the inner ear to the auditory nerve and the brain. Speech includes a combination of low and high frequency sounds; vowels have lower frequencies and are easier to hear. For example, an acoustic neuroma can be removed surgically. We can characterize sounds in terms of their frequency (or pitch) and intensity (or loudness). A loud concert might be as loud as 110 dB

Bend and Not Break - Ch 4: A Scar
Read here on AO3 :3
Contains 100% more smooches!
Xena stepped lightly as she opened the door to one of the interrogation rooms, narrowing her eyes as she adjusted to the dim light. The room had been quickly converted to a makeshift recovery room, the table that usually sat in the middle of the room had been pushed aside and replaced with a cot. Said cot was loaded with pillows and blankets in an effort to take as much pressure off the occupant's injuries as possible. Resting peacefully on it was Poppy, the scorpion rescued from the basement of a disgraced noble and had her venom forcibly extracted by torture. She seemed to be doing much better, her body was now criss-crossed with bandages and she was no longer twitching. She seemed to be sleeping at the moment.
She took a look at the clipboard left behind on the table where Monomon’s notes were scribbled. Electrical burns, blunt force trauma, eye damage, nerve damage...the list seemed to go uncomfortably long. She was glad she managed to get to her in time, but was disappointing that she and the other knights didn’t find out about the assassination plot sooner. Maybe they could have prevented a lot of suffering, but she couldn’t know for sure.
“Hello?” Poppy blinked awake, most likely from hearing Xena walk around. She was lying on her back and couldn’t twist her head to see who had entered the room. “Who’s there?” She asked, a tinge of worry to her voice.
“I am Xena, one of the Great Knights, I was there when you were rescued.” She pulled up a chair next to the cot and sat down. “Do you remember me?”
Poppy took a moment to breathe and then smiled the best she could through half a bandaged face. “I do.” She sounded coherent, but her speech was slurred and slow.
“You look much better,” Xena smiled in what she hoped was in a comforting way. “You must be on the good stuff, right?”
“Yeah.” Poppy didn’t bother trying to nod. “Nothin’ hurts. It’s great.”
“Well I won’t keep you long, I just need to ask a few questions and then you can go back to resting, okay?”
“Mmhmm.” The scorpion mumbled softly and did her best to focus her one working eye to the ant’s face. “I’ll try.”
“That’s all I’m asking for. Do you remember how you were abducted?” Xena had a quill and a tablet ready to take notes. “Take your time and try to remember what you can, okay?”
Poppy mulled over the question for a while, and started speaking. “I was at my flower shop in...in Deepnest. Some Hallownest bug came in...I asked if they wanted flowers...I grow flowers by the way and make them into arrangements. It’s nice.”
Xena nodded, knowing full well that she was on some of those good painkillers, and would probably will go off into tangents. “What kinda bug came in?”
“It was that um….beetle. Yes, that beetle. From...the place.” Poppy swallowed thickly, “Where they were...were...hurting me…”
“Don’t worry about him, he can’t hurt you anymore.” The ant put as much conviction as she could muster into her voice. “He won’t be hurting anyone else, after today.”
“Good,” She wheezed a little, catching her breath.
“What did the beetle want from you?” Xena pressed gently. “I think I could wager a guess but I need to hear it from you.”
“He uh...he asked to buy my venom...and I told him I sell flowers, not venom! It was weird...and creepy , and its against the law cause um...uh...it’s dangerous. You hafta have a license to get some and you get it from the...oh...what do you call it…” The scorpion hrmed to herself. “Oh I can’t remember, it’s the place where you can get dangerous stuff if you are a uh...professional? Scientist?”
“A supplier is what I think you mean. Where controlled substances can be given out dependent on research or medical use.”
“Yes! That! Well he got mad and started saying something about the fate of bug kind and how there was monsters in Hallownest? He said I should work with them to save everyone and I told him to leave cause I’m just a flower bug. And then something hit me on the back of my head.” She reached up with a free arm to touch the back of her bandaged head. It looked like a mess when she was first found and Xena was glad that Poppy couldn’t feel any pain right now.
“Then I woke up all tied up and the beetle was there with some other people. He said that I was going to help them get rid of the monsters and I told them I wouldn’t! Then they...they….” She sniffled, her eye tearing up.
“Then they hurt you and forcibly took your venom.” Xena knew when to stop asking questions. Poppy was starting to get a little upset, and she felt awful that she even had to bring up what happened to her so soon. But, she had to get this down for the record, and it was better to do it now while Poppy wasn’t in physical pain than wait and do it later.
Poppy nodded in response. “Mmhmm. I don’t know how long I was there.”
“That’s okay, Right now what I need from you is to rest and get better, okay? We’ll send word to your Queen and Princess and they’ll probably send someone over to help you home once you are well enough to travel.”
“Okay...thank you.” Poppy sighed. She wasn’t going to be able to stay awake anyway with the meds she was on and was quickly falling back into the realm of dreams. “There'll...be someone outside...right? Watching?”
“There are, I promise.” Xena nodded. “Nobody will let you get hurt again.”
“Mhmm...thanks…” Poppy fell asleep, a combination of reassurance and the ‘good stuff’. Xena took a bit of time to make sure she was comfortable, and then left the room. She glanced at the two guardsmen stationed outside.
“Nobody gets in that isn’t a Knight, the King, or Monomon, got it?”
They both saluted and stayed in place.
“Good...now excuse me, I have someone to see.”
She turned and headed towards the holding cells. The cells were kept underground, and as she descended the stairs she began to hear the annoying sound of metal scraping together. There was the sound of someone loudly complaining before descending into shrieks as the scraping got louder. She took a moment to rub her eyes and sighed, locking the gate behind her and stepping into the corridor.
Tiso was just sitting there, making god awful noises as he happily ran a fork over a metal plate. He was making sure to press extra hard, making terrible squeaking noises that made Xena’s antenna twitch under her helmet. The ex-noble within the cell was close to tears, looking around to Xena as soon as he saw her.
“Oh, oh bless you. Please! Please make him stop!” The jewel beetle was in the dirtiest cell they had, tear tracks marking his face and generally looking disheveled. He crawled to the bars on his knees, gripping the bars with shaky hands. “Please! It hurts!”
“I’m not even doing anything! I’m trying to serenade you with my beautiful music, you uncultured bastard.” Tiso scraped the fork loudly and it set the hairs on her carapace standing up and the beetle to cry out in pain. “It’s not my fault you can’t appreciate artistic talent. Frankly, I’m insulted.”
“That’s enough for now, Tiso.” Xena sighed and dug out her keys. “Monomon needs this guy and she’s going to be pissed if we’re late.”
“Oh?” He casually tossed the dishes to the side. “Going to be testing the antidote then?”
“Testing the what now?” The beetle looked around, confused.
“Most likely, yeah.” Xena ignored the beetle. “Now that she has a pure sample of the poison as well, she thinks she’ll know for sure if the antidote is legit or not after a couple hours.”
“Hours?” Said beetle was rapidly turning pale as he realized what was about to happen.
“Did I fucking stutter?” Xena snarled, opening the cell door. “Get your ass out here or else I’ll drag you out.”
“You can’t do that to me! I’m Lord Maximus Pennington Chrysoch the third!” They tried to dodge her hands, but she was too fast. She seized him by the wrists and began to bodily drag him out.
“I don’t give a fuck who you are! A traitor is a traitor to me.” She looked to Tiso. “Help me drag this sack of shit to Monomon and then you can take a break.”
“Hells yeah!” He jumped up, grabbing the free wrist of the condemned and hauled them to their feet. “Think I’ll have time to head to the museum to see Myla?” The beetle started wibbling and sobbing, but was completely ignored.
“Eh, take Cloth with you and you all can have an hour together. You’ll have to be back at a reasonable time though, we need all hands on deck with this situation.”
“Yeah I got ya. Thanks.” Tiso was noticeably happier, cheerfully dragging the sobbing beetle down the corridor and to their fate. He didn’t care what happened to them, all he could think about now was finally getting to smooch his girlfriends.
---
Monomon arrived outside the door to the royal suite, a capped syringe gripped gently but firmly in her tentacles. As soon as the antidote proved to actually work, and not just be another poison, she rushed as quickly as she could to the top floor. Hollow was standing guard outside of the room and nodded to her. Seeing that there wasn’t time for chit chat, she attempted to open the door.
To her surprise, it was blocked off. She looked at the knob, confused, and tried to push again. “What’s going on here?”
Hollow chirped to get her attention, and signed. <”Father is in there. I think he is sitting in front of the door.”>
“Mato? Of course he would.” She knocked on the door. “Mato! It’s Monomon!”
There was a shuffle from the other side, and the door was pulled open to indeed reveal the Nailmaster. He seemed rather rough looking, he must have booked it from the Howling Cliffs as fast as he could. “Monomon,” he nodded, and stood out of the way.
She floated inside to see what was going on, eyes immediately going to the nest that took up a good portion of the room.
Ghost was cuddled around Quirrel, doing their best to hold him in a way that would hopefully reassure him that someone was watching over him, but not tight enough to harm him. Quirrel was still unconscious, breathing heavily and shivering and once in a while his nerves would shudder, making him twitch and spasm. Ghost was already awake, no doubt hearing the door open. They looked at her, the dark fathomless eyes behind their mask tired and fearful. Their eyes darted from the door to the syringe held in her tentacle.
“Is that…” Their voice was so small and weak, but there was a bloom of hope behind it that Monomon could feel.
“Yes.” She drifted closer and uncapped the syringe. “We have it.”
They sat up quickly. “What do you want me to do?”
“Hold one of his arms still, I don’t want the needle to break if he has a spasm while injecting him.” She checked over the syringe, going over the calculations in her head one more time. She had already triple checked everything, but it wouldn't hurt to check it one more time. Ghost sat up, pulling Quirrel into their lap and used their lower set of arms to cradle him, and the top set to grasp an arm and hold it straight. Quirrel continued to shiver, making a raspy noise of discomfort from being moved.
“Good, like that.” With Ghost holding him, it was easy for her to find the joint in his elbow and sterilize it. Then, she injected the antidote slowly, watching the liquid within disperse into his hemo system.
“There…it should take effect soon.” She deposited the used needle in a box she carried to be sterilized later. “We may not notice a difference at first, but within half an hour he should be more comfortable.”
Ghost kept Quirrel in their embrace, resting their chin on his head and tucking him up close. “Thank you.” They said, moving slightly to adjust themselves. Monomon watched them tilt their head slightly, listening to his breathing as he continued to wheeze.
“How did you get that?” Mato had stayed back to let her do her thing, but now that there wasn’t any needles involved, he approached the nest again.
“A combination of work from the Great Knights, good old science, and some very helpful mandatory volunteers.”
“That’s fucking terrifying.” Mato took a step away from her.
“It’s what they deserved. They at least did something useful with their lives instead of just being executed.”
“How many prisoners are left?” Ghost’s mental voice was whisper quiet, as though they were scared that they were going to disturb Quirrel’s rest.
“I’m not sure. Tiso has the numbers. The ring leader is still alive, he was the lucky one who tested the antidote. What are you going to do about them?”
Ghost was silent for a moment, idly smoothing back Quirrel’s antenna as he lay in their embrace. “I think I will wait for Quirrel to weigh in on it all. He was...the most hurt.”
“He wasn’t the only one hurt,” Monomon drifted down to the floor to sit, curling her tentacles under herself. “There was another victim who is thankfully alive. You’ll have a report on that soon, but you may want to keep her in mind too, as well as yourself and my son.”
“It seems like the best thing to do is to let them stew in their own fear and guilt until you have a chance to deal with them.” Mato also sat, leaning against the wall. “They are not going to have any type of peace as long as they are down there with Tiso at the same time.”
Ghost actually chirped a laugh at that. “That is true.”
As they conversed, Ghost noticed Quirrel subtly shift a little over the course of twenty so odd minutes. His twitching was definitely dying down, leaving him still for the first time since he was poisoned. They could hear his breath change as well, the raspy wheeze was getting smoother and less labored. It would be a while before he was back to normal, but just being able to actually rest was something sorely needed for the pillbug.
“He’s doing better.” The vessel sagged in relief, tears once again welling up in their eyes. “He can breathe now.”
Monomon floated up from her position on the floor and placed a tentacle on the pillbug's forehead. She felt it for a moment before she spoke. “His fever has gone down.”
“He’ll be okay now, right? He’ll be okay?” Ghost shivered, black streaks dripping from their eyes as they pulled Quirrel closer to their chest.
“Yes Ghost, he’ll be okay.”
Ghost broke down into tears, a combination of relief, love, and the bitter fear of loss. Once they started they couldn’t stop, the emotional dam had broken. The sheer stress they had been bundling up for the past two days refused to be ignored any longer. Thick, choking sobs filled the room as they held their husband close. He’ll be okay, they won’t have to say goodbye so soon. They knew one day they would have to, but for now, he’ll be okay. He’ll live and they can continue to share the love that never ran out in their heart. He’ll be okay.
Mato and Monomon both embraced them, and for once, they let their family help them carry the huge amount of stress and emotions swirling around in their void. They kept repeating that simple phrase to themselves, over an over, to keep them grounded in the here and now.
He’ll be okay.

Myla hummed to herself as she looked over a crystal in her claws. She turned it around in the light, squinting through a monocular as she studied it’s structure. It was a beautiful fluorite specimen, still rough and unpolished. Broad bands of green, purple, and blues swirled around the stone in a rainbow of colors. She just needed to do a little cleanup on it and then it would be ready for display.
She looked at the basket of rocks on the floor next to her work station, all of them mined and found by her. She was pretty proud that she didn’t lose her knack for finding the beautiful and unusual. The infection left her unable to mine professionally anymore, but she had enough energy to go on little expeditions, following her heart as she explored the corners of the kingdom.
Of course, she didn’t go alone. Either Tiso or Cloth would come with her, keeping her protected as she jumped into holes to hack away at the rocks. She wasn’t very strong, but she can still knee cap people who threaten her, and she keeps her pickaxe nice and sharp. It was fun! Especially when she could spend the time with her partners.
She sighed, she hadn’t seen Tiso and Cloth for several days now. She knew what happened, the whole kingdom knew by now. She knew they had important work to do, but she still missed them.
As if the universe was listening to her thoughts, there was a knock on her office door. She glanced at her clock, it was about time for lunch. Maybe it was a coworker asking if she’d like something?
“Come in!” She called.
The door opened, and to her delight, her two knights tried to squeeze their way inside at the same time. Tiso gasped, smushed up against the door frame as Cloth tried to force her massive bulk through, getting equally wedged in.
“Cloth! Back up!” Tiso kicked his legs that were a good foot of the ground. The force of the attempt to beat Cloth inside had angled his body upwards to get stuck on the frame, one arm free and trying to pull himself free.
“No! You back up!” She retorted, trying to squeeze her shoulders in. “I want to kiss her first!”
“Like hell you -wheeze-” Tiso started going a little blue, a stark contrast to his black shell as he got squashed harder.
Myla never in her whole life, expected that she’d ever be a girl that someone would fight over, let alone two. She knew they were just playing around and joking with their fake little rivalry thing, it was endearing, but sometimes Cloth forgot her own strength. She remembered once when Cloth gave Tiso a ‘gentle’ punch to the arm and accidentally sent him through the window.
“How about both of you back out, and I’ll come to you?”
Cloth and Tiso looked at each other. Cloth nodded and with some effort, pulled herself back and out of the door-frame. Tiso, no longer supported, just fell on the ground and wheezed for breath. Cloth helpfully picked him up and set him on his feet again and dusted off his armor.
Myla giggled, bouncing forward to leap at the two of them and was caught into a three way hug. It was a happy moment of hugs and little smooches that was sorely needed after days of being apart. “I’m so glad you two are here!”
“Unfortunately, we only got a short amount of time, then we have to go back.” Cloth replied, sounding very apologetic.
“Yeah...we still got idiots to process.” Tiso took the time to give them both a nuzzle. “Duty calls and all that.”
“That’s okay, I’m just glad you’re here for now!” Myla wriggled to escape the hug, and promptly headed back inside the office. “I processed some new minerals if you’d like to take a look!”
“Of course we would!” Tiso booked it to the door.. and ended up getting wedged in again when Cloth tried to get in at the same time. This time it was worse, because Cloth didn’t put her club down first, and Myla could hear the wood creaking under the strain of it all. She rubbed the back of her head as she watched them both struggle.
She wondered if she should just have a second door put in.

It felt like ages since Grimm started talking, telling Quirrel of fantastical worlds both old and new. It was fascinating, hearing of so many places that were different and unique. For the most part Quirrel listened, asking a question here and there. It seemed like the Nightmare King had visited the places Quirrel had during his wanderings on the surface world, and offered some interesting insight to things he may have missed.
“It seems our time is nearly up.” Grimm folded his claws together under his chin, looking at the pill bug who sat in front of him. He had just finished telling Quirrel about a colorful world with a legend of an eternal sprout that was constantly being searched for. “You will need to wake up soon.”
“Really?” Quirrel leaned back in his chair and poked himself a couple times. “If I’m well enough now to wake up, how come I don’t feel any different?”
“It’s because your mind is protecting itself. You won’t feel pain while in a dream. I can however, change that aspect if it is a nightmare, but I have no reason to do so here.” Grimm gave him a sinister grin, exposing many needle sharp teeth, but Quirrel wasn’t afraid.
“Thanks.” Quirrel sighed, and put down his cup. As soon as it hit the table, it began to dissolve into essence, floating away in motes of white and red. In fact, it seemed like everything that wasn’t Grimm or himself was beginning to look blurry and grainy.
“I am not going to lie. You will most likely be in for a lot of pain once you awaken, but you must wake up.” Grimm looked to the side and off to the distance, watching the walls of the cozy room fade into white. “But you will live.”
“Will we ever get to chat again sometime? Despite the circumstances, I quite enjoyed our conversation. It would be nice to revisit it sometime.”
Grimm smiled softly, hiding his wicked looking teeth once again. “Of course we will.”
“Great!” Quirrel watched the last motes of color leave the dream, leaving nothing but a white, featureless void. Somehow they were still sitting, despite the lack of anything coherent around them. “Hrm...how do I wake up then?”
“Oh, that’s easy.” Grimm laughed, his voice distorting and echoing, as though retreating backwards. “You /[Quirrel]/ just need to /open[ed]/ your /[his] eyes./”
.
.
.
Suddenly, he was awake.... and he hated it.
Quirrel’s first thought was a mess of confusion. He had managed to open his eyes, a jarring jump from the dream world to reality. It was easy, but hard at the same time.
What Quirrel managed to see through his stinging eyes was nothing but a blurry mess of darkness and shapes. As soon as his brain caught up with the rest of his body, a deep sharp ache radiated from within his core, spreading all the way to the tips of his limbs. It felt like he tried to cuddle an ooma and paid the price for it. He had no idea how, but even his mandibles hurt. At least Grimm warned him, but it still sucked.
He could tell he was lying on something soft and warm at least. Wriggling his antenna (with a wince, cause how the fuck is his antenna sore too!?!) slightly gave him the usual smells of his home in the palace. His mind was still a little foggy, so when he detected three other people around him, he wasn’t quite sure who they were at first. It was silent, so he couldn’t identify anyone by voices. He was exhausted. Everything hurt. Breathing hurt. Having his eyes open hurt. It sucked and he resolved to complain about it soon enough. He had no clue what happened other than 1. he got poisoned and 2. he got sick from it.
What he needed right now, was his spouse. They probably knew what the hell happened and could fill him in on what he missed. He didn’t even know how long he was out for. It didn’t seem so long while he conversed with Grimm, but he suspected that time doesn’t really hold all that much meaning in a dream. He moved, at least, he tried to, gasping in pain as his hand squeezed something hard and slender. He nearly jumped out of his chitin when something squeezed back. A shape moved in front of his vision, a blurry mess of white that seemed to shine in the darkness.
“Quirrel?” The voice was tinged with the feeling of hope as it whispered through his head. He knew that voice, and he relaxed.
“Hello, love,” he wheezed. His throat was dry and scratchy and he coughed on his words. He closed his eyes for a moment as the blur moved and tripped his sense of vertigo. He heard a chirp in response before he was being hauled upright and held with four arms. The sudden movement flipped his stomach around and he groaned in response. “Ugh…”
“I’msorryi’msorryi’msorry.” He was being peppered with kisses all over his face as a soft whining noise emitted from a throat that was voiceless. He managed to lift up a shaking hand to rest it on the side of Ghost’s face, happy he didn’t accidentally poke them in the eyes since he couldn't see. He rubbed them as well as he could, struggling with the effort of keeping his arm up.
“It’s alright... dear…” It was difficult to talk, he had to stop and take a breath between each word. As much as he loved kisses, it was starting to overwhelm him, so he tried to soothe his spouse. “I’m fine.”
“You are not fine. I...I…” There was another wheezing sob and he was thankfully nuzzled instead of kissed. “You could have died.”
“Heh...heh...like you could...get rid of me...that easy.” He dropped his arm, no longer able to keep it up. His hand was captured in one of Ghost’s, and they rubbed it gently. “I plan to...be around...for much longer…You couldn’t...keep me away...if you tried…” He was losing his voice and he swallowed with a wince. He opened his eyes again, it was still blurry, but he could see clearer shapes. A blob of green and a blob of red was approaching, mixing together as he struggled to focus.
“Here you are, my dear.” A glass of water was placed in his free hand and encircled with a tentacle. “Sip slowly.”
“Hi mom…” He knew what his mom felt like, how she always had this sort of static energy around her, like you could get a good zap if you pissed her off. The same tentacle that used to rock him to sleep at night when he was a pip helped him drink and he gratefully swallowed down the water. It was absolute bliss. He may be king, but all the finery in the world couldn’t compare to that nice cold glass of water.
“You gave us a hell of a scare, how are you feeling?” Oh, that must have been Mato. It made sense that he would be here. The blurs of red mixed with gray and was certainly big enough to be the Nailmaster. They moved to stand closer to Ghost...at least he thinks they did. It was hard to tell for the moment.
“Hurts.” Quirrel could have lied but his mother was right there and she would have no trouble putting him in the corner for it. “All over. Hard to see.”
“I figured as much,” Monomon was still holding the glass of water for him, and another tentacle bumped against his mandibles. “Open up, I have something for the pain.”
He did just that, letting the pills go down with another few swallows of water. He imagined that he should feel hungry or something too, but he just didn’t feel like it. She must have sensed the question because she continued talking.
"Let’s wait for half an hour and see if you can handle some soup, okay?”
Quirrel nodded with a sigh. He was awake but tired again, it was rather frustrating. He closed his eyes again, letting them rest as he just laid there and breathed. He could feel the medicine begin to work, a numb tingling working down his limbs and into his core. Soon, every movement didn’t result in pain, and he managed to sit up a little. Ghost helped, sitting so that his back could rest against this chest and belly.
“What happened?” It seemed like a sensible question to ask. He was not surprised that Ghost was the one to answer.
“There was an assassination attempt and you were poisoned by the nail that cut you. The Great Knights led an investigation and arrested the ringleader and several members of the group. They are still investigating, but they are confident they caught most to all of them. You were unconscious for almost three days.”
“Three days?!” Quirrel raised his voice at that. Three whole days? As in seventy two hours?
“Yes, three days.” Monomon piped up. “If it makes you feel any better, half the kingdom has been keeping vigil outside, hoping that you would get better.”
Quirrel blinked in surprise. “Really?”
“She isn’t lying.” Mato was the next to say something, his voice moving around the room. “I nearly had to fight my way inside, there were so many people out there.”
Quirrel...didn’t know how to feel about that. On one hand, he didn’t feel like he was a person who would warrant a three day vigil, and on the other, he was touched and humbled. He had always been a bug who was fairly social and had a lot of friends, but to have that many bugs sitting around and waiting for news about him...it was astonishing. It must mean that he is doing something right.
“You two need rest,” Mato continued. “Ghost? There’s a pot of soup in the icebox, just warm it up. I’ll go out and tell the masses that things are okay so they can go home.”
“That is a good idea.” Ghost leaned their head down to nuzzle Quirrel some more. “Thank you.”
“And you, my little scholar, are going to stay in bed.” Monomon added. “Strict bed rest until further notice, got it? I will know if you get out of bed, trust me.”
“Yes mom.” Quirrel believed her.
Soon, both parents departed, and once again the room was quiet, save for a soft rumbling. Quirrel realized that Ghost was purring as they cuddled against them. “Stay with me...for a little?” He asked. Now that their parents were gone, it felt strange, like he was a small thing in a sea of uncertainty. Most likely, it’s trauma from the experience, but he didn’t think he could stand being alone for very long now. Now that he was awake, he wanted to stay awake, but he doubts that his body will let him for long.
“I would never leave you,” came the reply. “Everything is on hold for now and will be for a little while.”
“You can’t just... shut down the government...love.” Quirrel chuckled. “Even though...I think most would...enjoy the vacation.”
“I am a king, I can do what I want. And if I want everyone to fuck off so I can care for my beloved husband who survived an attack on his life, I will make it so.” There was a hint of amusement in their voice as they gave him a nuzzle.
“What about...the assassins?” He would not be surprised if they were all dead by now, but he still wanted to know.
“The knights have them. We can talk about it later. I would rather kiss you and talk about how much I love you, if that’s okay.”
Quirrel managed a laugh as he relaxed against his spouse, feeling happy and full of love. “You know what? I would...like that very much.”

flommy, “I have pillows, blankets, supreme comfort, and all that’s missing is you.”
[So this one’s been nagging at me for probably about a year now? It had been sitting half-started for ages, as I never really knew how to carry out the idea I had, but I did my best in coming back to it now. Bit lighter on the Flommy interactions this time, but in exchange we get Tommy and Thea siblingness and some Tommy thoughts.]
From the Comforting Cuddles starters list
“What do you think about ‘I have pillows, blankets, supreme comfort, and all that’s missing is you’?”
“Do you need me to take you to the ER?” Thea deadpans from her perch on the cushioned window seat in Tommy’s room of the hotel suite without looking up from her phone. “Because it sounds like you got one of those Hallmark cards from the airport gift shop lodged in your throat.”
Tommy slowly lowers his own phone and rolls his head towards his sister, expression settling into one of loving annoyance. “What I’m getting out of that is that I have a future in the greeting card industry.”
“The future you should be more concerned about is the one where I spin-kick you in the head before the emotional trauma of hearing my brother workshopping romantic texts to his girlfriend sets in.”
“Hey, I’m keeping it perfectly PG,” Tommy defends, pointing at Thea with his free hand for emphasis.
That finally gets her to set her phone aside and swivel in her seat to face Tommy, giving him a striking, raised-eyebrow look. “I think the subject matter automatically makes it PG-13.”
“It’s a hotel bed!” Any exasperation behind the words trips right out of the gate, stumbling into nervous laughter.
Thea just continues to stare, swinging her legs back-and-forth unevenly as her feet dangle above the floor.
“That’s… achieved the perfect ratio of softness to firmness for an excellent night’s sleep?” Tommy can feel his ears reddening as they disappear into his shoulders. “Also, those pillows. Heavenly. Remind me to check with management to find out who the supplier is, I’m going to place a personal bulk order once we get back to Starling.”
“Right,” Thea says slowly, legs finally stilling. “So the high-quality comfiness is the thing worth writing home about. No other reason why you’d express missing having a plus-one to enjoy it.”
Had his mouth not dropped open with a scandalized pop instead, Tommy might have swallowed his tongue. “Thea Dearden Queen, you’re going to stop right there before I also ask about the hotel’s highest-strength cleaning supplies and if they can be applied directly to my brain.”
“You asked for critique,” Thea reminds him, but backs off by raising her hands sarcastically in surrender. “Just pointing out insinuations you may or may not have intended. You’re welcome.”
Chagrined by both the acknowledgement that he’d asked for help and his sister’s frankness in delivering said feedback, Tommy turns his attention back to the blinking cursor in the half-filled message box. The wittiness of the greeting has dulled significantly since the lightbulb first flicked on, even without the suggestive commentary. It’s a grim admission that spurs Tommy’s thumb to find the delete key and hold, consuming the carefully-crafted words before his eyes until he’s greeted once again by blank space.
The fact that Thea’s sigh is louder than his own is what pries Tommy away from his seemingly insurmountable task with his eyebrows raised in curiosity.
“You really haven’t done this sort of thing before, have you?” Thea asks, waving a hand vaguely at the room as she sinks back against the window. “The out-of-town business trip.”
Admitting defeat (at least for the moment), Tommy tosses the phone onto the bed and crosses his arms, the corners of his mouth twitching. “I mean, if my business was pleasure...”
“So no, then,” Thea cuts in with a fond eye-roll. Her face goes soft a moment later, though, and she glances back at Tommy with a strange sort of knowingness. “Which means you especially haven’t done it when you’ve been in an actual relationship.”
Tommy offers up an entirely sheepish look. “I think that’s a given.”
Thea makes a little shrug-like expression with her lips, conceding that point. She pulls one foot up to rest on the cushion and hugs her knee to her chest, before giving Tommy another gently pointed stare. “It’s okay, you know.”
“Hmm?” Tommy rocks back on his heels as he lets the questioning hum slip, and rolls his lips under for a façade of innocence. These last few exchanges have been drawing them dangerously close to vulnerable topics—it’s still Tommy’s carefully-wired reflex to either clown about it or just play dumb.
Too bad Thea knows those moves when she sees them, and her narrowed eyes suggest that she’s still considering the earlier threat of a spin-kick in the head.
“It’s okay to miss her,” she says, stripping Tommy’s anxieties bare with a single statement.
For a split second, he thinks he might have preferred stewing in the awkward surrounding the Bed Text for just a bit longer. Incidental innuendoes are familiar territory, even if being called out for them by his younger sister adds a new layer of humiliation.
The notion doesn’t linger, though, but it’s due less to the embarrassment than it is to his brain bouncing from point to point like a pinball machine from hell. The mortification just ricochets back to the almost-slip in question, and—true to pattern as of late—propels his thoughts to a flare of fondness and Felicity. The thing that makes Tommy want to bury his face in one of the pillows that started it all, though, is the fact that the ball rebounds again to the current conversation, seemingly inescapable.
“It’s not weird?” The question comes hesitantly as he uncrosses his arms, immediately bringing one hand to rub the back of his neck. “I mean, it’s only two nights, and one already down—we’re back by tomorrow afternoon, no time at all. I feel like it’s too much, just me being unreasonably clingy.”
Experience seems to back up that impression, after all. Two years, five, more have created gulfs between Tommy and his loved ones, and even then, his longing and loneliness came off as exaggerated and one-sided.
But maybe that’s not entirely fair, he immediately scrambles to note. Oliver was working through his own problems at the time (in questionably-at-best healthy ways), caught up in a different storm of emotion and trauma that instinctively repelled Tommy—familiar magnets flipped to the same pole for the very first time. Perhaps it took more time and effort than either of them could have expected, and still never returned them to where they left off, but they did manage to establish a balance better suited to who they are now.
(Even Tommy’s being in this hotel room—as one of three co-owners of Verdant, joining Thea in exploring options for expanding the club outside of Starling—is evidence enough of that reconciliation and understanding.)
As for his father’s absence and return…
Well, any expression of emotion comes off as an overreaction when compared to Malcolm, and should not be counted.
Almost as if she senses Tommy’s once-solid evidence crumbling to dust, Thea pushes off the window seat, landing gracefully on her feet. “You’re overthinking this, especially with the texts. Just call her, all right? We don’t need to head out for at least another hour, so there’s plenty of time.”
Still lagging a little bit from trying to detangle his anxieties, Tommy nods absently in agreement as his eyes follow Thea’s movements towards the door. When she crosses the threshold to head back into the suite’s living area, though, his brain finally catches up. “Hey! How is it that you’re the one giving me relationship advice?”
Thea grips the doorframe and leans her full body back into the room, one eyebrow arched as she tilts her head to look at him.
“I mean, isn’t it supposed to be the other way around? You know, older brother’s prerogative and all?” Tommy defends weakly, wilting under the sharp stare.
“Seeing as I ended up with emotionally-constipated brothers on both sides, I think that privilege has been revoked,” Thea declares, smoothly propelling herself back upright and reaching for the doorknob. She pulls it behind her as she finally departs, but not before shooting Tommy a cheeky, “I’ll give you some privacy to relay the magical properties of a hotel bed.”
Tommy imagines his immediate response is the sound an ostrich would make if strangled. “Okay, look…”
The door closes firmly before he can get any more words out, but not fast enough that he doesn’t catch Thea’s laughter.
“Brat,” Tommy mutters affectionately under his breath, before teetering backwards to flop down on said bed. The impact bounces his phone an inch or two above the comforter, only to land face-down right next to his hip.
Tommy’s breath catches in his chest as his attention is drawn again to the device, a mere hand-twitch within reach. Hardly any effort at all to pick up, and selecting Felicity’s name from his recent call log to re-dial is no more complex a step. But his hand seems to be declining all calls from his brain, remaining unmoving at his side without even an itch in the fingertips.
He’s overreacting—he has to be, and for real this time. It’s been barely a day since his standard morning protest of Felicity’s alarm (involving an exaggerated yawn and an arm stretched across her stomach to secure her in place for just a bit longer) was met with a laugh and a set of ice-cold toes pressed to his shins in retaliation. Barely a day since Tommy lumbered past the bathroom door on his way to the kitchen and couldn’t (wouldn’t) fight the grin that bloomed upon overhearing Felicity’s murmur-singing of some earworm while getting ready. Barely a day since she’d swept into the kitchen, all color and curls, to accept the travel mug of coffee from Tommy’s hands in exchange for a soft, lingering kiss and wishes for a safe flight.
A one-day break from routine—one that’s still a few months fresh, at that—and certain comfort shouldn’t be this jarring, should it?
After all, it’s not like they’ve been completely out of contact for the last 24 hours. Tommy had passed along travel updates (and a couple pictures taken mid-flight of Thea, tuned out with her neck pillow, eye mask, and earbuds); in turn, Felicity had relayed the shift between her day and night jobs, and confirmed her safe return home following the latter. There may temporarily be a few hundred miles of physical distance between them, but Felicity is still firmly here in Tommy’s life.
And yet, he can’t help but linger on the memory of waking this morning: rolling onto his stomach and reaching across the bed, only for his arm to land flat atop a mattress completely devoid of another body’s warmth. How the confusion and pinprick of hurt struck faster than the recognition that said bed wasn’t his own and why, and the clarity only served to transform it into a yearning ache. Even brushing his teeth was a more solemn affair, with Tommy still half-listening for Felicity puttering around and starting her day.
Maybe Thea… has a point.
Before Tommy can tend to the gentle bruise to his ego from admitting his younger sister has relationship wisdom where he does not, his phone buzzes with an incoming call. Synapses finally firing as they should, his hand wraps around the device and lifts it to his face to glance at the screen.
His fingers nearly fumble and drop the phone directly onto his face when he sees Felicity’s contact photo (one he’d surreptitiously taken shortly after they’d moved in together, when he’d caught her pleasantly lost in thought at the kitchen table) and the banner requesting a video call.
Thankfully, Tommy manages to spare himself that painful landing by adjusting his grip and scooting back into a seated position against the headboard. He takes and releases a deep breath to compose himself, before his thumb finds the Accept button.
Within an instant of Felicity coming into focus, Tommy feels his lips tug into a broad smile to compliment her still-sleepy one.
“Morning,” she greets with a little finger-wiggling wave, before she pulls a steaming mug of coffee into view with her other hand. After a second, she curls her fingers into her palm and wrinkles her nose in thought. “Wow, that was weird.”
“What, saying ‘good morning’?” Tommy asks, raising an eyebrow teasingly.
Felicity mirrors the expression and throws in a shrug. “I rarely get to open with it, at least. It’s usually beat out by someone requesting that I ‘please keep hands and feet and body inside the bed at all times’.”
“Always best to take those safety messages seriously, you know,” Tommy notes sagely. He can feel the corners of his mouth twitching, threatening an even bigger smile, but the impulse immediately extinguishes once he sees Felicity worrying her lower lip between her teeth and averting her gaze in uncertainty.
“I missed it today,” she blurts, catching them both off-guard after a (seemingly agonizingly long) beat. A light flush comes to her cheeks at that, but she confidently lifts her eyes back to meet Tommy’s and amends, “I missed you. Waking up with only a tangle of blankets trying to keep me in bed, and then getting ready on my own… I mean, it’s not unusual or unfamiliar, I did get by for many years this way. But I guess going back now, after getting into new and shared habits, is stranger than I expected.”
Felicity takes a breath to duck her head a little and push a stray curl behind her ear with her free hand, before picking up steam. “It must be something about the distance that’s getting to me—for no real reason, because it’s only been the one day and you’re back tomorrow—but I wanted to call and say…”
“I have pillows, blankets, supreme comfort, and all that’s missing is you.”
Only once Felicity pauses, lips frozen in a little “O” and only a single surprised blink to prove that the connection isn’t buffering, does Tommy realize he’s landed himself right back where he started. This time, though, he’s backed by Felicity’s own testimony, and that changes the game.
The lights on the pinball machine of his thoughts are going wild, that’s for sure.
“What I mean by that,” he starts, punctuating mid-sentence by awkwardly clearing his throat, “is that I miss you too. That I was actually looking forward to cold feet on my legs this morning, and hoping to hear you singing in the bathroom, and…”
Tommy trails off, disguising a small wince. Thea’s going to be smug about this for the rest of the weekend, and almost certainly for a while after they return to Starling.
“And I think that, if we’re both feeling this way, maybe we’re not overreacting so much as we’re… on to something.”
It’s difficult to determine what that “something” is, beyond the sense that it feels right. That they—Felicity and Tommy, together—feel right, and even a temporary deviation from pattern (no matter how small or odd) is a shock to the system.
It’s okay to miss her.
Felicity remains silent on the other end—the stunned expression having melted off her face and into something more thoughtful, but much less readable. Even though their conversation up to this point made their alignment apparently clear and she’s likely just turning the implications over in her mind, Tommy can’t help but subtly squirm from the suspense.
“Yeah,” Felicity finally speaks up, lips spreading in a small, soft smile as she nods in agreement. “Maybe we are.”
Despite that being the very answer Tommy was hoping to hear, he has no immediate idea how to respond.
“Oh. Uh, good,” he fumbles. “Because I’m hoping you’ll feel the same way about these pillows if I manage to find out where they’re from and get my hands on a few.”
Something in Tommy’s chest swoops as Felicity cracks out a startled yet amused laugh. “You’re really stuck on those, huh?”
Tommy meets that with a casual shrug and pats the one next to him for emphasis. “I’m a connoisseur. These meet all the necessary criteria, and then some.”
“And I’m a tough sell,” Felicity retorts, settling back in her seat and bringing her mug to her lips. “I know what I like, and I’m seeing only one pillow here that I want for sure by the end of the weekend.” To drive the point home, she bobs her head sharply to give Tommy a once-over.
“Well, now that I will gladly arrange,” Tommy agrees, and lets the grin spread unrestrained across his face.

PART 3

December 18th
“How are you today, Aelin?”
The was, without a doubt, her least favorite question.
Picking at her nails, Aelin shook her head.  There was so much to say and most of it wasn’t significant.  Did she talk about how she hasn’t had a decent night's sleep in over a month?  Or how she couldn’t concentrate at work for more than ten minutes?  Or maybe she could talk about the fact that her best friend and cousin were getting married and she was asked to play the piano as Lysandra walked down the aisle.
“I’m fine,” she said as she looked up.
Across the room Yrene didn’t look convinced.  Her curly brown hair framed her lovely features and accented the golden-brown light of her eyes.  She was a beautiful woman and Aelin had to wonder why she didn’t have a ring on her finger.  She was obviously successful, kind, attractive, and when Aelin wasn’t being stubborn—easy to talk to.
“If you’re going to lie to me, you may as well leave now,” Yrene said.  She leaned back in her seat and clicked her pen as she watched Aelin.
Sighing, Aelin ran a hand through her hair. “I don’t know how I am.”
“You don’t want to be here, we can start with that,” Yrene suggested.  She smiled knowingly and Aelin rolled her eyes.
“I don’t want to be here because I know it’s a waste of time,” Aeline said.
“But you came anyways.  Why?”
“It’s what everyone expects of me,” Aelin said with a shrug. “So, I may as well get it over with.”
“So, you don’t think anything is wrong?” Yrene pressed. “There’s nothing keeping you up at night?  Your tapping foot is just a random occurrence?”
Aelin’s foot stopped.  She pursed her lips and glared at Yrene who smiled serenly.
“When we are in uncomfortable situations we have tells, unconscious ticks,” Yrene explained.  “I’m not trying to intimidate you; I hope you know you can be honest with me.”
Intimidate.  Yrene was not intimidating.  Not really.  Aelin just didn’t want to spill her problems out like this.  Not now.
“Why, despite everything, did you come today?” Yrene asked.
There’s no point lying.  Not when Yrene can point it out so easily.  Not when she doesn’t get much satisfaction out of it anyways.
“If I didn’t come, I would have had to go into a work meeting,” Aelin said, “and Sam would have been there.  And after that stupid party—I just can’t be around him right now.”
“Why do you think that is?” Yrene prods. “Are you embarrassed by what he may have seen with you and your friends?  That was the first time he really met any of them, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, I mean, we only got together a few months ago after I left,” Aelin replied, her foot began tapping again and she adjusted the bracelets on her wrist. “But why should I be embarrassed by him?  He treats me well; he cares about me.  But it was my first time seeing everyone in so long and I didn’t think he would have come.”
“You didn’t want him to meet everyone.”  Yrene’s words were innocent as they tried to make sense of Aelin’s rambling.  For which Aelin was grateful, at least one of them knew what was going on.  And yet...and yet they sent a chill through Aelin’s body.
“I didn’t want him to meet everyone,” Aelin agreed.  She met Yrene’s eyes. “Because as soon as he did everyone would try and assume that I was fine.  And dammit, fine is the farthest from what I am feeling.”
#
When she started therapy, Aelin had been back in Terrasen for all of twenty-four hours.  November twentieth was her first session with a woman who had a private practice and a website that declared her specialties lied in healing from trauma and working through anxiety and depression.  It was a simple profile.  One that Aelin wasn’t sure why she went for it, but in a spurt of desperation she’d made an appointment.
Almost a month later and at times, bi-weekly appointments, Aelin didn’t know if she were any better off than when she first stepped off the plane from Paris.
Sitting in her office near the end of the workday, Aelin scrolled through social media on her phone.  She really had to stop doing so, but staring at a computer screen full of fashion sketches or marketing reports was not appealing.  She unfortunately stumbled across a post Fenrys made not twenty minutes ago.
It was a simple picture of him, Lorcan, Conall, and Rowan.  Each dressed in a suit and tie.  Each handsome in his own right.  Of course, Aelin’s eyes lingered on Rowan.  Of course, she couldn’t help but imagine what he had done with himself over the past year.  Of course, she knew it was stupid of her to do so.
Landed an epic deal in Wendlyn! Got the best team around.
Aelin was surprised to see Fenrys had managed not to cure on the page, even if it was a work-related post.  Just as she was surprised that he had kept his innocuous verbage kept simple using only one “epic” and not a single “dude” or “rad.”
The knock on Aelin’s door had her looking up and she found Sam staring in at her.  He had a handsome smile and his bright eyes watched her with interest.
“Hey,” he said, “you almost done here?”
Aelin glanced at her screen where numbers and approvals still needed to be inputted.  She was a terrible person.  How the hell had she been selected to go to Italy, let alone Paris, for those work assignments?
“Chock it up to the Monday brain, but I’m going to need to make it a late day,” she said regretfully.
Sam frowned and Aelin knew he could see right through her.  At least mostly.  He might not have seen everything going on in her mind, but he knew her enough to take an educated guess.
“Let me order take out and I can stay and help you,” he offered.
An unexplainable stab of emotion filled Aelin as she looked up at him.  He was too good to her.  Too good for her.
“I thought you had plans,” she said after she was able to school herself.
Sam smiled sheepishly.  “Just with your cousin and Dorian.  They invited me out for drinks.”
I didn’t want for him to meet everyone.
Just as soon as she’d swallowed down her emotions, the panic began to rise again.  Hell.
“Go.” She said.  The response surprised her.  It was the absolute last thing she wanted to say but the simple word slipped her lips before she could stop it.  “Go.  I’ll be fine.  It’s not much anyways.”
“You’re sure?”
“Absolutely,” she lied.
And because Sam was too good, he couldn’t hear it.  He couldn’t see the subtle shake of her foot or the way she adjusted the bracelets on her wrist.
Instead he crossed her office and leaned over the desk to kiss her.  Slow and languid.  He pulled back much too soon.
“I’ll call you later, yeah?” he said with a heart wrenching smile on his face.
“Yeah,” she replied and watched him go.
It wasn’t long before five o’clock rolled around and he stopped by again to make sure she was fine working late by herself.  After she convinced him to leave, she waited.  She waited until the last of the interns and admins left before she pulled out her phone and made a call.
They picked up on the second ring.
“I’m going to send you an address,” Aelin said, “can you bring a few things and meet me there in an hour?”

“I thought I was mortal enemy number one on your hit list.”
Chaol Westfold.  Tall, muscular, handsome, and an ass.
“Did you bring the cake?” Aelin asked.
He hefted a plastic bag up. “And the beer.”
“Then congratulations,” Aelin replied, “you are now welcomed back into the fold of friendship.”
Chaol looked as though that were the last thing he wanted, but he entered her office and shut the door behind.  He muttered under his breath about this not ever happening again as he unloaded the cake and beer.
Aelin immediately went for the cake.  Chocolate hazelnut with a creamy frosting.  It was the first thing she ate after getting back from Paris.  It had to be the best creation in the world.  She grabbed a plastic fork from one of the drawers in her desk and immediately dug in.
“Are we going to talk or am I just your cake supplier now?” Chaol asked.
Reluctantly, Aelin dug another fork out of her desk and tossed it to him.  He accepted, but he didn’t eat.
Aelin licked a blob or frosting from her fork. “Do you know why we broke up?”
“We lied to each other about everything,” Chaol answered.  Slowly, he scrapped a bit of frosting on his fork.  He contemplated his next words before continuing. “And we never talked about it either.”
“Right,” Aelin said, nodding. “Do you ever regret breaking up?”
That was the question that drove Chaol to a real bite of the cake and Aelin had to smother a laugh watching the sight.  Chaol never ate cake or chocolate or anything that wasn’t specifically for keeping in excellent shape.  So the sight of him actually enjoying eating the cake was the funniest thing she had ever seen.
“Of course I do,” Chaol said.  “At least, I regret how we broke up.  You’re the first woman I ever loved, Aelin.  The first one who really...I don’t know taught me how to live.”
She shook her head. “Nah.  I dragged you around into trouble.”
They sat in silence as they ate the cake.  Aelin ate far more than her share.
“You wanna tell me what happened?” Chaol asked.  “Or tell me how the hell you still have my number?”
She grinned viciously.  “I had to keep you in my contacts in case I needed someone to frame for murder.  And you were just the asshat to fit the bill.  Until you brought me cake.”
He rolled his eyes at her and cracked open a beer. “Why am I not surprised?”
Cackling, Aelin stuffed her face with more cake.  She knew that she couldn’t ignore his original question for long.  There was a reason she had called him and only him.  Maybe this was something she should have talked to Lysandra about.  Or even Yrene.  But there was something about her friendship with Chaol that no one else could fill.
“Rowan cheated on me,” Aelin finally said.  Chaol nearly choked on his beer.  She grabbed a few spare napkins to toss at him before continuing. “That’s why I went to Europe.  I had to get away.
Chaol sat quietly as she continued. She told him everything about the fight she had with Rowan, returning to his apartment, hearing what he did.  She told him about leaving.  About Sam.  About the party.
“He said he still loves me,” Aelin finished. “But if he does, if he ever did then why did he do what he did?”
It was a lot to put on Chaol.  He’d never cheated on her.  But he’d lied about various things.  She’d lied too of course, but they’d been fresh out of high school trying to live their lives.  She’d certainly loved him enough to have sex with him for her first time.
And then they’d drifted further and further apart.  To the point that Aelin never knew who she was when she was with him.  It was unfortunate really because his friendship had helped her through the hellish years of high school and on into that first year of college.  And then it was gone.
“Have you talked to him?” Chaol asked. It was an innocent enough question, but Aelin could see the rise of his brow and knowing glint in his eyes.
Aelin sighed dramatically. "You should meet my therapist. All the two of you want me to do is talk."
"Aelin," Chaol said, his voice growing just a tick more serious.
"What is there to talk to him about?" Aelin stabbed at the cake, suddenly feeling ill which was far too disconcerting. "I know how I feel on the matter. So does he."
Chaol grunted unconvinced. "I doubt that."
She stuck her tongue out at him and grabbed the second beer he brought and settled in to mock him endlessly.

December 19th
"It's seven in the morning." Yrene frowned as Aelin pushed herself into the office.
"And yet you're already here," Aelin said.
She hadn't slept the night before. Not really even after talking to Sam who's had a riotous night with Aedion and Dorian. And all she could about was her conversation with Chaol.
"To get ready for the rest of my appointments," Yrene said slowly, still watching Aelin with obvious confusion.
Settling down on the couch, Aelin looked up at Yrene. "Why do I still love him?"
Yrene pursed her lips and shut the office door before crossing to her own chair. She said nothing and simply waited for Aelin to continue.
"I mean, he hurt me, betrayed what I thought we had together, what we could have had together...and all he can say is I don't know what happened. Am I that replaceable to him?"
Yrene continued looking at her, quiet. But she had opened up her notebook and began taking notes on what Aelin was saying.
“I know what you’re going to say,” Aelin added, “and I have not talked to him yet.  I don’t think I can.”
Silence stretched through the room and Yrene clicked her pen as she stared at Aelin.  The latter woman staunchly avoided looking up from her nails.  It wasn’t until Aelin’s phone buzzed with an incoming text that she sighed heavily.
“Where do you feel safe, Aelin?” Yrene asked suddenly.  She leaned forward in her chair and fixed Aelin with a long look. “Where do you feel like you are in control and confident?”
Aelin made a face and shrugged. She’d never really thought about that before. “Serious answer?  There’s this dumpy little apartment that the company rents out for storage.  I go there when I need to get away.  Or the coffee shop down on Fifth.  A friend I met in Paris has family that owns it.”
“Okay,” Yrene said with a slow nod. “If, and only if, you feel comfortable I think you need to talk to Rowan.  You deserve closure on what happened.”
“You really don’t like me, do you?” Aelin asked.
Yrene smiled. “I really think you deserve more than what you are allowing yourself to have.”
Glancing at her phone Aelin sighed. “I need to get to work.  Let me know how much I owe you for this.”
Yrene assured her that she would and Aelin slipped out of the office.
By the time she made it outside, a light snow began to fall.  The thick white flakes assaulted her and clung to her hair and coat.  Aelin muttered a curse.  She really did not miss the snow.  Nothing about it.  Not the cold, the ice, the distinct scent of pine that always seemed to come when the chill did.
Stuffing her hands in her pockets, Aelin hurried down the walk towards her work building.  Thankfully Yrene’s office was close to her own so Aelin was usually never late for work or gone long when she had her appointments during lunch.
She texted Sam and he met her in the lobby of their work building, coffee in hand.
“Hey babe,” he greeted with a kiss to her cheek.
Aelin smiled warmly and accepted her coffee, grateful to the immediate warmth that spread through her fingers.
“Thanks,” she said.  She leaned into his side as they made their way to the elevators. “You have fun with the guys last night?”
“They’re great,” Sam agreed.  When he glanced down at her a strange expression flashed on his face.
“What?” Aelin asked. “Dorian didn’t shove you into a rose bush, did he?”
Frowning, Sam shook his head. “No?”
“Never mind,” Aelin said quickly.  “He just does that sometimes.”
Sam still looked utterly confused and it was such an endearing look that Aelin rose on her toes to press a quick kiss to his jaw.
“They just mentioned something,” Sam began slowly, “it’s just, ah, they mentioned Rowan.”
Aelin nearly choked on her coffee.  Sputtering, she covered her mouth. “Rowan?  Why the hell would they?”
“It’s nothing,” Sam said quickly, “he was at the bar and they—I don’t even know what it was about.  It’s not a big deal.”
Aelin didn’t have a chance to say anything as the elevator opened on their floor and a group of interns was already waiting for Sam to sign off on orders and marketing issues.
“I’ll see you at lunch,” Sam called over his shoulder as he hurried off towards his office.
Aelin could only wave weakly as he disappeared.  Sometimes she wished she’d thought through starting a relationship with him a little better.  But after everything that happened with Rowan...Sam had been something new.  And she’d believed that something knew was just what she needed.
It didn’t help that sometimes Aelin could still feel Rowan’s hands on her, his lips ghosting hers.  She could still feel the rumble of his laugh when they spent late nights together and woke up early.
Her stomach churned with acid.  The coffee was not sitting well in her empty belly.  At least she still had chocolate cake hidden in her office from her chat with Chaol.
But Aelin certainly didn’t want to feel this way.  Not anymore, not when she had been trying so hard to move on with her life.
So as soon as she got into her office, she pulled out her phone and sent a text.
#
Rowan without a doubt hated himself.
He had for a long time and without a doubt fully deserved it. So when he got a text from Aelin he promptly threw up in the nearest trash can of the office break room.
Fenrys laughed at him, absolutely pleased with how the morning was going.  Over the passed year they’d been working together, diving into a business management system to help companies and the likes from going bankrupt.  The only reason it was going so well was because Rowan did nothing else but work.
"Dude, did you get wasted on a weekday again?"
Rowan flipped him off and grabbed a cup to fill with water. He took a long drink before he glares at his friend.
"Aelin texted me," he said, "she wants to meet for coffee later. To talk."
"And your first response was to vomit?" Fenrys asked, brow quirked.
"Yes," Rowan affirmed.
"If you're looking for sympathy, you're not finding it from me," Fenrys said. He pulled a soda from the fridge and cracked it open, "I'm a sucker for Aelin and would choose her over you any day."
Rowan scowled. "Thanks man,"
"Anytime," Fenrys said. He ripped an invisible hat as he left the break room.
Rowan scrubbed a hand over his face. He knew that Fenrys was right. It was a miracle he'd even managed to hold onto any of his friends.  For some reason, they’d all stayed with him.  For the most part.  Elide and Lysandra were the exceptions.  Neither of them, no matter the situation, even bothered to look at him.
One year.
He didn’t blame them.
So now Rowan had the chance to meet with Aelin and, hopefully, talk to her.  If she yelled that was fine.  If she threw things at him that was fine too.  As long as he got the chance to be around her at least once more.
Oh hell he actually had to talk to her didn’t he?
It was going to be an impossibly long day full of Rowan hating himself and coming to terms with the fat that Aelin was going to kill him.
And despite the fact that he’d had a year to prepare for this, Rowan couldn’t have been further from being ready.  In all honesty all the scenarios he’d come up with in the last year had not prepared him for this in the slightest.
By the time five o’clock rolled around, Rowan barely got anything done throughout the day.  Every time he would start on something his mind would begin to wander and he’d find himself on Aelin’s social media pages.  Which consequently would make things worse.
Photo after photo were of her and Sam.  Italy, Paris, white beaches, and blue waters.  She was a goddess in each and every picture.  And the smile in each picture, Rowan had to remind himself, weren’t meant for him but for another man.  A man who knew how not to screw up the greatest thing in his life.
As he left his office, Rowan took care to avoid running into Fenrys, Lorcan, or any of the others.  He knew full well that Fenrys wouldn’t have kept his mouth shut and Rowan wasn’t in the mood for dealing with anyone else telling him he was an idiot.  Even Lorcan had avoided talking to him for several months after the incident.  Lorcan whose least favorite person was Aelin.
Granted Lorcan was a better man than he was on so many levels.
Brown shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts as he headed down the street towards the coffee shop Aelin had indicated.  It was a small place Rowan had passed by several times but had never bothered to go in.  The shop was small and had such a niche ambiance that Rowan never felt like he could go in.
Now as he entered the small space with its rich scents of chai and chocolate, Rowan’s concerns were confirmed.
A woman with chin length black hair and warm, bronze skin greeted him from behind the counter.  As Rowan glanced over the menu, he shouldn’t have been surprised that Aelin chose this place.  Half the menu was devoted to pastries.
“He wants a black coffee, Nesryn,” a soft voice said from behind him.
Rowan winced and turned to where Aelin sat at a small table tucked into a corner.  She already had a large slice of cake in front of her.
Nesryn fixed Rowan with a glare and nodded while muttering under her breath in French.  He had no doubts that she knew exactly who he was.  Death was most certainly in his future.
Rowan waited until his coffee was finished and paid for--a generous tip added to the jar on the counter—before he joined Aelin.
He didn’t know what to do other than pull the other chair out from the table and take a seat across from her.  They sat in silence like that for a long time.  Aelin slowly ate her slice of cake and sipped on her own drink.  Rowan was startled to see that it was a cup of tea instead of her standard double shot of espresso with hemp milk and cinnamon.
“You wanted to talk before,” Aelin said slowly.  It had barely been three days since that party and she couldn’t believe that she had actually let herself meet with him so soon after being staunchly against it.  She kind of hated herself for it, but she would deal with that later. “So let’s talk.”
She still didn’t look him directly in the eye.  Rowan could see creases in her makeup lining on her eyelids.  Her lipstick had long since worn off and he could tell she’d been chewing on her lips like always.  A habit that even a year hadn’t taken away.  She was still beautiful of course.
“I’m sorry, Rowan said immediately.
Aelin flinched at his words and dragged her teeth over her fork as she scraped as much frosting off the tines as possible.
“And,” Rowan continued, “I can’t...I’ve never forgiven myself for what I put you through.”
Soft classical music played overhead.  It reminded Rowan so much of what Aelin liked playing--the gentle folds of notes blending together until they reached a crescendo of sound, of feeling.  And then slowly fading bad into those gentle folds.
It wasn’t until a new track started that Rowan continued.  There was so much he wanted to say to her, but given with what he did he wasn’t entirely sure what good any of his words would do.  Perhaps they would at least help him move on.  Maybe.
“I never wanted any of this to happen.  I never wanted to hurt you.” Rowan stared at his coffee.  His words sounded hollow to his own ears and he couldn’t imagine how Aelin was handling his ramblings. “It just seemed for the longest time we were never on the same page.  Nothing was changing and we...we were barely treading water together.”
Aelin pushed the plate of cake away and crossed her arms over her chest.  Rowan could feel her eyes digging into him but he was too much a coward to look up and meet that gaze.
“So you left,” Aelin said.  “Instead of waiting and trying to make our relationship work, you ran.”
“I’ve regretted it every day,” Rowan whispered.
Music continued to play overhead and a few people trickled in to order drinks or dessert.  No one lingered long however, despite the empty tables, the warmth as compared to the outside.  In and out.  In and out, the customers drifted.
Aelin’s phone buzzed on the table.  She glanced at the message and sighed.  Barely sparing him a look, she stood grabbing her coat and pulled it on.
“I need to go,” she murmured.
Finally, Rowan glanced up at her.  Her eyes were rimmed red, yet she hadn’t shed any tears.  Instead the sorrow on her face turned fierce.
“Aelin,” Rowan began, he started to rise, but Aelin held a hand up.
“My boyfriend needs me,” she said.  And then she spun on her heel and left the little shop.
Rowan stood next to that little table in the back corner of that shop and watched her go.  He watched through the front window until she crossed the street and disappeared around the corner.
He would never get over the idea of her walking away.
#
Sam was waiting for her in the kitchen of her apartment. He smiled brightly as he looked up from the stove. He was making something that smelled like spices, and warmth, and home.
"Alright, so this is something my mom used to make around Christmas," Sam said. He had a twinkle in his eyes and a dopey sort of grin on his face. "And I know you've had a long week."
Aelin can't help but smile gratefully. She hangs her coat up on the hook beside the door and drops her purse on the small side table there too.
"It smells wonderful," she said. Coming into the kitchen she took a seat at the counter so she could watch Sam as he chopped vegetables and slowly stirred the pot.  From what she could tell is was a stew of some sort.
"How was your day?" He asked. As if he didn't know. She'd told him that she was going to meet with Rowan, and while he might not have known what had transpired in that relationship, he'd known something. And especially after the conversation she’d had with Chaol, Aelin knew she had to open the doors of communication and honesty.
And it sucked.
“It’s better now,” she said.
He smiled softly and poured her a glass of wine.  It was different from what she usually drank but she was just grateful he was even here that he’d stayed.
When they first got together almost six months ago it had been something haphazard.  Slow but quick.  Random but natural.  And after everything with Rowan...Sam had helped her pull herself together.
It had been something she’d never thought possible.  She’d thought that Rowan was her soulmate.  That he would always and forever be her person.
As she sipped her drink, Aelin watched Sam work.  He talked endlessly about winter nights where he’d helped his mother with cooking dinner for the family.  The stew had been his favorite comfort food and thus figured it would be something she might enjoy.
And then he told horrible stories of other occasions where he’d burned dinner too.
Aelin cackled at the idea of him setting off the smoke alarm and having to wave a towel around like a madman.
“I swear I was banned from the kitchen for a full month after that,” Sam laughed.  He set the table, simple settings of Aelin’s mismatched bowls and cutlery.
“Well you can’t do anything worse than what I could do,” Aelin said.
Grinning, Sam pressed kiss to her forehead and took a seat next to her.
Through the meal, Aelin was able to press everything else about her day away.  She could forget Rowan.  She could forget the past year.  She could see herself changing.
Maybe it was that notion that caused her to lose her appetite.
“So, what prompted you to make me dinner,” she asked, pushing her half-eaten bowl away.  “Your text sounded off.”
Sam shrugged halfheartedly.  He’d removed his tie long ago and the first few buttons of his shirt were undone.  He looked so relaxed and at ease that the slight pang of panic Aelin had felt just moments ago returned full force.
“I’ve just been thinking about you,” he said honestly.  He smiled again in that same delightfully silly way that he had.
Aelin knew that wasn’t all that was on his mind.  She rolled her eyes and kicked him beneath the table. “And?”
He opened and closed his mouth before taking a large bite of stew to get out of answering.
Aelin stuck her tongue out at him and rose to get a start of dishes.
“Nope,” Sam said, he snatched a hand out and grabbed her wrist.  He swallowed his bite of food and shook his head. “You have no responsibilities tonight.”
“Oh?” Aelin arched a brow.  “None at all?”
Sam shook his head.
“Then why the hell am I not in my pajamas yet?”
Aelin ran her fingers through his hair and hurried off to her room, more than ready to be out of her work clothes.  And, in all honesty, needing to get away for a breath.
There was something about the way that Sam looked at her just now.  Something about how he’d been acting recently.  It wasn’t anything bad, but it was enough to make Aelin’s breath catch, her pulse race.  There was something about him.  The man.
She’d never really noticed it before.  Not in all the time that she’d been dating Rowan.  But when she and Sam had been in in Paris working on the extended project together.  She’d seen in then.  There was compassion and honor written all along the threads that made Sam who he was.  And now...now those threads were becoming more and more noticeable.
By the time Aelin had changed, Sam was already started on the dishes.  He topped her wine off and allowed her to help him dry what wouldn’t fit in the dishwasher.
“Aelin,” Sam said after they’d started the dishwasher and left the last few items out to dry.
“Hm?” Aelin hummed taking a long sip of wine.
Sam stepped closer, placing his hands on her waist.  He was trim, lean, and obviously in good shape, but not bulky or broad like other men.  It didn’t deter Aelin’s attraction to him though.
She leaned into him, willing herself to play on those subtle emotions building in her body.
Sam pressed a kiss to each corner of her mouth before hovering just before her--waiting to give her a longer more meaningful kiss.
He’d been patient with her the last six months. Never pressuring her into sex or anything more intimate than she was ready for.  And Aelin would be forever grateful to him for it.  But she also couldn’t help but wonder how long that patience would last.
As Rowan had shown, men had their limits.
Aelin squeezed her eyes shut.  She would not focus on him.  Not now.  So she closed the distance between her and Sam and kissed him.  It was somewhat sloppy as he’d not been expecting her to move so suddenly, but Sam was quick to recover.
She could most certainly get used to him.  Every little thing about him.
“I love you,” Sam said.  So carefully his lips moved against hers as they sounded out the words.
I love you.
I love you.
Aelin’s hands froze at the lower buttons of his shirt.  She’d gotten a little out of hand, not that she was too sorry.  But his words just reminded her what was really happening.
She opened her eyes and stared into his golden gaze.  Her throat constricted as she found herself pulling him closer, closer.
“You love me?” she whispered.
Sam nodded once, firm and definite.
Aelin felt her breath slip out too quickly from her lungs as she kissed Sam again.
December 20th
It was ten o’clock the next evening when Aelin was knocking at the door. Someone swore behind it and Yrene answered. She was still dressing for the day, still wearing makeup. Still holding her case notes in one hand.
"I'm going have to start charging you extra if you keep showing up like this," the woman said. But she let Aelin into the office all the same.
"Fine by me," Aelin replied.
The office was dimly lit by a single lamp and a pile of take out containers from an Indian restaurant took over the table.
"So do you live here or what?" Aelin asked. She turned a lifted a brow at Yrene.
Snorting, Yrene ignored Aelin and crossed to the chair she usually took over and sat down.
"What are we talking about tonight, Aelin?" Yrene asked.
Why was she here? Aelin had no idea. She just knew she didn't want to go home. If she went home, she knew Sam would be there because he was too good for her. He was planning on a late night of hot chocolate and cheesy Christmas movies. And Aelin should want to be there. But she was the idiot who went out for coffee with her ass of an ex. An even bigger ass than Chaol had been.
"I talked to him," Aelin said. "At least I listened to him."
"And? Do you feel better?"
"No." Aelin answered immediately.  “Because my current boyfriend who is the best man I could ask for after the hellhole that is Rowan Whitethorn.  My current boyfriend told me he loves me.  And what do I do but give him a kiss and tell him thanks.  He barely left my place half an hour ago before I came here.”
Yrene gave her a bland look. “Don’t you have friends for this?  This is girl talk Aelin.”
Aelin cursed and pushed herself off the couch.  She stood there for several long moments. “Why can’t I love him?  I want to.  Dammit, I want to.  But, I just…”
“What?” Yrene prompted softly when Aelin didn’t continue.  “But what, Aelin?”
“But what if it happens again?” Aelin asked.  She looked at Yrene and shook her head. “I thought I could trust Rowan and then he cheated on me.  I think I can trust Sam.  But I just can’t go through it all again.”
Neither of them spoke as Yrene makes a note in her little booklet.  She lets Aelin stand there breathing heavily and collect her thoughts.
But Aelin isn’t thinking much aside from being angry.  Angry at Rowan especially.
“He had no right to tell me he still loves me,” Aelin said suddenly.  “If he’d really wanted to talk why would he do that to me?  Why would he put me in that position?”
“Would you have listened any other way?” Yrene asked.  Aelin shot her an angry look and Yrene held up a finger. “All I’m saying is that he might not even know how to deal with it all either.  Have either of you moved on?”
“I’m trying,” Aelin whispered.
“And I am so proud of you for that,” Yrene said with so much conviction that Aelin felt tears prick her eyes. “But I also want you to consider what else might be holding you back.  You talked to Rowan; you made that step.  What else can you do?  Do you think you could—”
Yrene cut herself off and frowned.  Aelin watched her have an internal battle.
Finally, Yrene shook her head. “Do you think you could forgive him?”
Aelin cursed and stalked to the office door, closing it with a loud snap.

December 23rd
Rowan decided that he hated the holidays.
And he did not have to explain himself for it.
Besides, everyone basically already knew why he did.  And that it was his own fault for being in such a miserable state of existence.
Because of course he’d tried.  He’d tried to reach out to Aelin in the past year, just for some sort of reconciliation.  He’d never gotten anything in response.  Connall told him to try therapy.  Lorcan told him to try drinking himself to oblivion.  Fenrys had ignored him for the better part of the year.
And now they were in the holidays and Rowan had to at least try and not be a “broody old buzzard.”
As Aelin would have said.
He was a fool.  An utter waste of a fool.
“Remind me again why you’re having another holiday party?” Rowan asked Dorian that night.
Unlike the last party, this one was far more casual with far more alcohol and far less dress code.
“Because this one will actually be fun,” Dorian told him lightly.
The man still didn’t like Rowan, of course, but he had been gracious enough to allow Rowan to join his other friends to the invite.
“Especially when Aelin gets here and skins you alive,” Doran added.  With a feral grin that he’d likely learned from Manon Blackbeak, Dorian slapped Rowan on the back with far too much force and left him alone.
He needed a whisky.
As Rowan went to get a drink, he heard more guests arrive.  He glanced up to see Elide Lochan give a squealing hug to Lysandra.
Elide, he knew, was a longtime friend of Manon’s as well as a somewhat potential girlfriend of sorts to Lorcan.  Rowan wasn’t sure and didn’t really want to ask knowing Lorcan would likely punch him.  Elide was also a friend of Aelin’s so he would also be avoiding her.
“Oh look, it’s the ass,” Elide said as she calmly slipped past Rowan to grab a beer for her and her friend.
“Lochan,” he said looking down at her.
She fixed him with a sharp smile that was mostly teeth and derision.  Lorcan better pray he never get on the woman’s bad side.
The night was progressing far too slowly for Rowan’s tastes and he debated to simply walk out.  No one really wanted him there anyways.  He had to squash that plan when Aelin entered, her new boyfriend at her side.
As always, Aelin looked phenomenal.
Her hair was straightened and pulled into a low ponytail so it hung down her back.  Her makeup was simple with only bright red lipstick as the biggest accent.  If Rowan hadn’t already been screwed over by the sight, the tight black dress she wore did the trick.
Hell she was glorious.
But he shouldn’t look at her like that.  He had no right to.  Not anymore.
Rowan knocked back his whiskey and refilled his drink.  What was he even doing here?
Aelin was laughing too loudly at something Manon said.  The two it seemed had the potential of becoming friends which in and of itself should terrify everyone.
He knew he must have been staring too long and too intently because Aelin chose that moment to look at him.  The light that burned in her eyes snuffed out almost immediately and Rowan felt his heart squeeze in his chest.
He was a damned fool.
#
Like everything else in her life, tonight wanted to screw her over.
Aelin found Rowan staring at her.  Blatantly.  A slight haze of panic wrapped around her, until her felt Sam’s hand cup her elbow and pull her into his side.  For that she was grateful.  Grateful for that small ounce of support.  Even though she couldn’t quite focus on anything, she could focus on Sam and the fact that he was there.
“Oh, we’re so excited,” Lysandra said, pulling Aelin from her tunnel vision of self-doubt. “It’s a miracle there was even an opening at the venue, but it’s going to be perfect.”
“That vineyard is so beautiful,” Elide agreed.  She wore her hair long with her straight-line bangs finally growing out to the point that she could part her hair properly and style her hair the way she wanted to.  Aelin had tried to convince Elide that getting bangs was not a good idea.  But Elide had been drunk and on a mission.
“You’re going to make me play the piano outside?” Aelin complained. At least she could somehow contribute to the conversation even though she was lightyears away from the party.
“Oh you’ll be fine,” Lysandra insisted.  She sent a wink Aelin’s direction as if to prove the worries were unfounded.
Aelin rolled her eyes.
This was normal.  She could do normal.  She could do easy and relaxed.  All of her friends were here.  All of the people she knew and loved.  With of course the one exception.
“I just can’t believe you guys were able to squeeze your way onto the top of the list,” Manon said.  She not so subtly thrust a drink into Aelin’s hand.  Something that would most definitely get her drunk, no doubt.
There was the briefest of pauses where Lysandra and Aedion exchanged a look that was so quick and practiced that Aelin first thought how wonderful it was that they knew each other so well to communicate the way that they did and then a terrible sense of foreboding.
It was seconds.  Seconds spanning years.
“Rowan helped,” Lysandra finally admitted.  The guilt on her face was evident.
Aelin immediately took a sip of the drink Manon had made her.  Oh yes, it was certainly going to make her forget about the night.
“He knows someone who knows someone,” Lysandra added.  She glanced over her shoulder to where Rowan was still hiding near the kitchen.
His feature’s in their perpetual scowled lightened only for an instant. “My friend, Ren owed me a favor.”
“Ren?” Aelin couldnt help but burst out.  Ren was the last person she would have expected Rowan to interact with.  Even though she was part of the reason the two even knew each other. “He hates you.”
“I became one of his managers in his company,” Rowan said softly.  He met Aelin’s eyes. “Helped him from going bankrupt.”
Her mouth went dry and she had to fight against her automatic instinct to drown the rest of the hellish drink in her hand.  Instead she nodded once.  Stiffly.
Well here’s to doing something right, she wanted to say.  She wanted to scream.  She wanted to do anything but stand there and tell Lysandra and Aedion how excited she was.
But what else was there?  She would not make a scene.  Not so close to the holiday.  Not when somehow everyone had moved on with their lives.
And then as a saving grace, her phone buzzed with an incoming call.
Deliberately, she leaned up to kiss Sam on the cheek before excusing herself.
By the time she made it to the hall outside the apartment, she’d missed the call entirely.  Aelin scowled to herself and headed downstairs.  As long as she had escaped, she would make the most of it.
Outside, the wind had settled.  At least she had a coat this time.  Her coat with the long sleeves and deep pockets.
The missed call was from Yrene which made Aelin roll her eyes.  Now who was bothering who?  But she called back all the same.
“Hello Aelin,” Yrene’s calm voice came on.
“Are you upset that I made it one day without bothering you?” Aelin asked with a low chuckle.
She walked a few steps down the block, careful to avoid chunks of ice from a brief dusting snow last night combined with the sudden chill of last week.
“I just like checking in on my people,” Yrene said.  The line went silent for a minute. “Are you okay?”
Aelin let out a long breath, glad Yrene couldn’t see her.  But it seemed that the therapist could read people well enough without actually seeing their face.
“I’m fine,” Aelin said.  She tilted her head up to the dark sky and watched as the first few flakes of snow began to descend.
Yrene made a disbelieving grunt on the other end, but remained silent.
“I am,” Aelin insisted.  “I’m surrounded by my people.”
“Alright,” Yrene said, “let me know if you need anything.”
“I will,” Aelin promised.
As she hung up, she took a long breath and told herself it was fine for not going into everything with Yrene.  Because she was fine.  Really.
She turned to head back inside and came face to face with Rowan.  He remained a few feet off, just descending the steps from the apartment building.  At first, it seemed he didn’t even see her.  Until he turned.
They stood there, feet apart.  Worlds apart.  So far from where they had been.
“I was just leaving,” Rowan said.
Aelin stared.
“I didn’t even want to be there anyways,” Rowan continued.
Snow continued to fall.  The large flakes weren’t that imposing.  It would end quickly, at least that’s what Aelin had always heard.  A large snow would come and go, but the small one always lingered.
“Why would you even be there?” Aelin asked.  She shook her head, stuffing her hands in her pockets. “You don’t even like Dorian.  And Lys and Aedion will tie you to a spit and burn you alive.  Why—”
She cut herself off before saying something truly unnecessary.  Collecting her thoughts, Aelin breathed in the bone chilling air.
“Don’t you realize how hard this is for me?  I’m done trying Rowan.”
He let out a hollow laugh. “Try?  Did you try Aelin?  Or are you just like me, running away.  It’s what you did back then too.”
“Don’t you dare put this on me,” she hissed.
Aelin drew herself up so close to him.  Close enough to smell his cologne.  It hadn’t changed in all this time.  Close enough to see the dark flecks of his green eyes.  They were just as bold as before.  Close enough to remember.
Tears sprung to her eyes as she stumbled back.  Too close.  Too close.
Rowan cursed and ran both hands through his hair.  The longer bits fell into his face, cutting across his features.
She wanted to tell him good-bye.  Wanted to say that this was it.  She was done.  Because she was, wasn’t she?
“I’m sorry,” he said.  So soft that the words were almost swept away on the snowflakes curling past. “I didn’t mean that.  I just...Dammit Aelin, I don’t know how to do this.  I don’t know how to erase myself from your life.  From my life.  When even after all this time it’s always been you.  It’s only been you.”
The snow fell around them.  The thick tufts turned into tiny specks.  There was so much that Aelin almost lost sight of Rowan, even though she stood mere feet from her.
Bastard.  Bastard for doing this to her again.
Because all she could see was that woman, Lyria, leaving the apartment building.  A smug, secret sort of smile on her face.  And the woman couldn’t have been more different from Aelin.  Dark hair, tanned skin.  Small and petite.  And all Aelin could see was Rowan’s hands roving another woman.  His lips…
Aelin shuddered.
“I’m going to spend the rest of my life regretting what happened,” Rowan continued.  He was the one coming closer now.  He reached out to catch her when she turned away, his grip soft enough that she could have left if she’d tried.  “I’ll spend the rest of my life hating me for what I did to you.  To us.”
His words were too soft, too gentle.  Aelin found herself staring up at him with the tears in her eyes that she would not let fall.
She would not break.  Not now.  Here she was falling into the sense of love and life he always provided.  Hell.  What couldn’t she just let him go?
Aelin pressed a hand against Rowan’s chest.  The sweater he wore was thick but she could still feel the steady thrum of his heart beating an uneven rhythm.
“I’ll spend the rest of my life hating you for that too,” she said.
And then she pulled away.

We have, however, been forced to pick up demand from clients who’s OTHER suppliers have been shut down, so for a two month stretch we were working seven days a week without break. Things have gotten closer to normal schedule-wise recently, but we’re keeping all or our screening procedures in place for the foreseeable future.
🍓 song you can’t stop listening right now?
“I’ll Rust With You”, by Steam Powered Giraffe. It sounds like a peppy 50′s dance number, but it’s really about the slow all-consuming ache that overtakes you as the things you love are taken from you over time, and I think that’s just swell.

Thank you Skippy and MM Anon!  Weehee, a fun collection so thought I’d put a few thoughts together today on the riddle.  Wonderful work by lots of anons today, hooray!  The below covers a few of the points made by these beauties and a few other thoughts.  PG, hope you are taking it easy and taking care of yourself as best you can, my thoughts have been with you a lot today x
…”I have a nose for these problems Referring to MMs ‘saddle nose’ allegedly a result of cocaine issues (saddle nose is a condition associated with nasal trauma, congenital syphilis, relapsing polychondritis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, cocaine abuse, and leprosy, among other conditions. It is characterised by a loss of height of the nose, because of the collapse of the bridge)
… M Andealerson… Appears Marcus Anderson is the dealer / supplier of above substances.  Potentially a play on words with ‘my son’ meaning he is actually Archies Dad which has been speculated over before.
seek Professional assistance …… Anonymously helped …  Assistance for the above problems to be provided by professionals.  Alcoholics Anonymous is probably the best known recovery system but there are many others Narcotics Anon, Gambling Anon, Sex Addiction Anon etc around the world and they provide a variety of services which can be participated in in person, over the phone, over internet chat etc, my understanding is that these services are much wider than attending meetings as is commonly known.  While it most likely refers to the couple of clues above and MM, I did wonder about the capitalisation here.  Potentially it is assistance in some manner (not necessarily an Anonymous group) for PA?
EXAMINE THE WEDDING GUESTS!!!……… One family member of dubious provenance …… These clues read together point to Doria - she was the only member of MMs family at the wedding.  Other anons have highlighted her dubious provenance related to both family status and finances.
If you break the sentences apart… or look at it a different way…
The wedding guests, well where on earth to start with this collection…  Rightly or wrongly, I believe that the clues received via Toronto Paper 1 and DripDrop on Twitter point to some of the bigger players in this big scam.  They push the Lindsay Roth (Lindsay Jordan on the wedding list as her married name) and the Roth family and being the connect to Madam.  Lindsay was the only Roth at the wedding so is it one of her family that provides the dubious provenance of MM in the BRF?  Her Dad is a lawyer and assisted with the press release in 2017 where PH asked the press to back off and respect the privacy of his ‘girlfriend’.
Dubious provenance, by itself, may also refer to Archie Darren Dolls much debated parentage.
A disgusted dignity … Dignity in the BRF, to me, means keeping quiet and getting on with things in the face of outcry.  So many are doing it just now (and likely disgusted by the MM sideshow), PH, PW, PE, HMTQ etc etc
“Look closer old thing”…Harried into it… If we are to look closer at something, I reckon MM has perhaps missed a detail on an important document (Who would have thought???  Haha!)  MM Anon recently hinted that she (MM) didn’t sign a prenup.  If Harry was hurried and harassed into marriage, maybe MM forget a detail to do with the marriage and this may be a way to annul rather than divorce with all the drama and money that a prenup would have taken care of.
“ both well hidden”. … Given the various Anons notes of late I think that this means both of MM’s ‘Children’.  The one that the golf caddy lady referred to and Archie Darren Doll.  Both are hidden and safe from this drama.  (Allegedly, Oh Yea Oh Yea etc, thank you and sorry I can’t recall them all, they crack me up)
A homing instinct. While it could mean MM has a homing pigeon urge to return to the US, I more think that this is PH having a homing pigeon instinct to return to his ‘second home’ Africa.  I hope that he goes on tour and with or without her actually enjoys himself in a role and country he suits very well.
Thank you....greatly appreciated.....🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Getting Almost There
Title: Getting Almost There Author: drharunosakura Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 4390 Summary: An almost but never was rears its ugly head again as the smallest of exhanges are moved to new heights. Author's Note(s): Let me know what you think about this. If enjoyed I wanna spin this into a proper chaptered fic.
Trope: Unresolved sexual tension
Sakura Haruno could not believe that her next-door neighbor for years, her knuckleheaded idiot brother, her best friend in the entire world would do this. Yet, here she was almost too terrified to step out of her condo to start on this day trip to see the said idiot. “Well, I might as well get this over with. It’s not like Naruto actually knows about my past with his best man.”
If Sakura knew that if this was the friend that Naruto wanted to pick her up she would have never agreed on the four-hour journey to the Land of Tea with him. She did want to support him and his wife. They were doing a grand reopening of the Resort they were given on their wedding day. Sometimes Sakura just couldn’t understand the kinda money the Hyuuga’s had She supposed her ride would understand better as he similarly grew up in the world of class and sophistication and excess. Moving to grab her suitcase and walk out she got a good look at Naruto’s best man and Sakura’s biggest mistake at his wedding, Sabaku No Gaara.
He looked good, too good. The kind of man that whether he was in workout gear, a three-piece suit or the jeans and a t-shirt he currently wore he looked like the clothes were absolutely made for him and him alone. Nationally ranked MMA fighter in high school and college, tech multi-millionaire of his own fortune and grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth he had made Forbes’ 30 under 30 the past three years in a row. There weren’t many people in this world that could make Sakura Haruno, research scientist, incredible trauma surgeon, and published marvel, insecure. But the redhead smoking a cigarette in front of an Aston Martin that probably cost more than her condo, did with ease. Seeing her approach and stamping out the cigarette the man that she would be spending the next several days with approached her slowly.
“Naruto didn’t tell me it was you I was picking up. Here I thought I’d have to play Prince Charming to some... random bimbo.” He paused as he looked her up and down, before moving to grab her luggage and place it in the deep red convertible he was driving.
Not realizing Sakura had been holding in her breath for some time until she released it the moment he turned his back, she took a few more breaths in preparation for spending quite a bit of time with a man she has been avoiding for the past year.
“I’m surprised you didn’t fly there.” She murmured and he turned his head before snorting and opening up the door for her.
“I don’t like flying commercial and Temari needs the jet for her fashion show this weekend. I like not being a complete prick to my big sister.” He smirked before shutting the door and giving Sakura a moment to marvel at the luxury of the car he owned.
“What no helicopter?” She joked under her breath before holding it as Gaara moved over her and reached to grab something. He still smelled like fresh electronics and cinnamon and cigarettes and she hated how hypnotic of a scent it was to her. Pulling back the man grinned and produced a pair of sunglasses before whispering in her ear.
“Naruto hasn’t yet re-zoned the helicopter pad yet, I asked.” Before slipping on the sunglasses and starting them on their journey.
Sakura was silent for the first hour or so of their ride, glancing every so often at the redhead next to her. She remembered exactly what she felt the first time they locked eyes. It was at the initial rehearsal dinner and he was the last to arrive. No one knew what this mysterious best man looked like but Naruto was adamant that his best friend in the entire world from business school could be the only person he wanted to be the role and we would all love him.
Sakura was sitting beside Hinata and Ino, gushing over the fact that one of them was finally getting married when he walked into the private room of Choji’s restaurant. Ino was the first to recognize him and man was she starstruck.
“That is Sabaku no Gaara. How on earth did Naruto become best friends with Suna’s most eligible bachelor of the year?” Sakura couldn’t help but giggle. As she was the maid of honor (Hanabi was slightly too young as Hinata’s little sister) Sakura went to introduce herself to her partner for most of the wedding festivities.
“Sakura-Chan! You have to meet Gaara. This is my best man and he saved my ass a few times in business school.” Naruto grinned and Sakura turned to look at the redhead in question. She had vaguely heard of the Sabuko family, mostly from Shikamaru and his wild affair with the fashion designer Temari, but the younger was the marvel.
He was just under Naruto’s height but had the presence of being head over shoulders taller. He had eyes the color of jade and a smile that seemed new on him like he was trying it out for show and wasn’t sure if he would take it home or not. His hand reached out to shake hers and the low timbre of his voice absolutely rattled Sakura.
“You’re the maid of honor right? Naruto has not shut up about you. I guess you’re my partner for this thing.”
“Y-yeah.” She chuckled, hating herself for the stutter and quickly moved to shake his hand. She hadn’t been this flustered since high school and here she was near blushing at a man for smiling at her and shaking her hand.
“Well, you two are gonna be great pals. I’m gonna go check on Hinata and get this thing going kay?” Naruto grinned and moved along, leaving Sakura to show Gaara his seat across from her at the table.
“So,” She asked at the venue, they were waiting for their part in the ceremony to begin and Sakura thought she might as well get to know the man she was walking down the aisle with… figuratively speaking that was. “How did you and Naruto meet?”
Turning towards her Gaara smirked and this half-smile felt quite warn in, it suited him better. “I kicked his ass in a speech and debate class and he literally kicked my ass in the gym. We’ve had one another’s backs after that and he became like a brother to me in business school.”
Nodding Sakura looked up at the two to be married and added. “Well he was so excited everyone gets to meet you. It’s not like you get to visit too often living all the way in Suna right?”
Turning towards Sakura before taking another glance at the groom he replied. “I suppose I could visit more if given a good reason.”
Stopping at a traffic light Sakura supposed the silence had gone long enough and she couldn’t take it anymore. As she was far too terrified to touch the radio of his car she blurted out a question.
“So, what errand did you need to run for Naruto that was close to my place?” She quipped knowing that Naruto was a good enough bridge for them to talk about to start with; lest she loses her mind in the silence.
“Naruto needed a couple of high tech systems to help his POS system run on the multitude of international clients the resort sees. Making it easy for the employees to use multiple types of credit cards and translate itemized receipts was a pretty simple program to run. I just made it an offline system and there are a couple of monitors in the back so I could just give it to him to install before opening day next week. I have a pretty good supplier in the area and picked them up before I got you.”
Sometimes she forgot how smart Gaara was. How he could light up a room the moment he gathered their attention or how he could seemingly make things just appear from him. He could solve any problem at the drop of a hat and never seemed to make a big deal of it.
Sakura was freaking out. She was single-handedly going to ruin the wedding of her best friend in the entire world. Ino dealt with the flowers. Choji had catering down to a science. Hinata’s family dealt with the venue. All Sakura had to do was handle the music and her duo for the ceremony completely bailed. She had 72 hours to find another musician or Hinata was walking down the aisle in silence.
Sighing Sakura placed her head in her hands in her hair and let out a long slow groan.
“Last I checked wasn’t it the bride was supposed to be the one to freak out about a wedding?”
Looking up she saw Gaara. He was in a tank top and running shorts and yet she couldn’t be bothered to think him out of place in the hotel’s business center.
“Well, when one of your biggest roles in the wedding, really your only role in the wedding falls through you’re bound to get a bit stressed.” She sighed.
Sitting down beside her silently while he answered a few emails on his phone he asked, “So, what fell through?”
Looking at him she bit her lip before responding. “I was supposed to get music for the wedding and reception and I found this great band for the reception. That’s settled and I thought I found this beautiful Guitar and Violin duo for the ceremony but they canceled last minute and I don’t know where I’m going to find someone and this has to be perfect because it’s Hinata and Naruto and Hinata has been pining after Naruto since we were in grade school and if anyone deserves a fairytale wedding it’s her and I don’t know what I can do to fix…” She went to continue but Gaara stopped her with a silent hand before asking.
“So you need an appropriate soloist or duo that can play at the wedding ceremony right?”
Sakura nodded and went to explain her worries before looking at Gaara dial a number and pick up the phone.
“Cousin, Sasori you still dating that stupid artist guy? He still good friends with that harp player what’s his face Haku. Yeah, the one who just finished up that European tour. Get me his contact info for a job on Saturday. Wedding. I need it guaranteed but put that lovely family money stamp on it kay? See you for dad’s obligatory family get together next month.”
Sakura paused and attempted to close her mouth from the awe that she just experienced. “Y-you didn’t have to do that. You barely know me why would you help me like that?”
“I haven’t helped you yet. But if you haven’t gotten a text from me with his contact info in two hours then my cousin won’t be getting his spot in the gallery I own this year either.” He chuckled and moved to answer another set of emails.
“I don’t know how I can repay you Gaara, this is so sweet.”
Turning towards her Gaara simply smirked and lifted her chin. She could feel the heat of his breath against her cheek and she hoped she wasn’t blushing as noticeably as she felt she was. “Continue keeping this wedding exciting for me and Naruto happy. He deserves this day to be perfect too and it’s the least I can do to make sure it stays that way.”
Sakura paused as they pulled into a little cafe just passed the highway. Stepping outside it Sakura followed him as he ordered his order and then silently turned to her for her to add-in. Paying for the both of them before Sakura even had a chance the two of them moved to a spot outside of the cafe and Gaara pulled out another cigarette.
“I have to say this once just as a doctor, you know how bad those things are for you.” She murmured knowing he probably didn’t want the scolding but unable to hold back any longer.
“Running as many companies as I do at my age will kill me a lot faster. I think a couple of cigarettes a day are hardly comparable to the stress that puts on my body.” Rolling her eyes at that she conceded to her one statement and went to sip her coffee. She, while not one for too many sweets was a true lover of whipped cream and relishing in the delicious taste that accompanied her latte.
“How is the whole doctor thing going?” He mentioned after a while, startling her and shocking her that he remembered.
“Um, it’s great. I just finished up my residency so everything feels finally permanent; like I’m finally out of school. How is everything your way?”
Putting out his cigarette he paused before answering, taking a long look at her first and Sakura inwardly cursed herself for the delicious shudder that went down her spine.
“Of the Sand Corp is doing decently. Enough that my father is pressing me to sell it under the Kazekage Industries umbrella; not like I would. It seems he is punishing me for doing so by giving me more responsibilities to run under the family business not that Kankuro isn’t an epic VP of my company anyway.”
“Well at least visiting Naruto will give you a bit of a vacation. When do you have to go back to Suna?”
Taking a moment take a long gulp of his coffee, and give Sakura time to ogle the bicep that was holding it he responded, “I actually moved to Konoha a couple of weeks ago. Kazekage Industries is expanding and dad wanted me to take over the branch here. Hence making it really difficult to fully run my tech business based in Suna.”
“Oh, that is tricky, but at least when Naruto comes back or visits he’ll be able to see you as well. Have you been adjusting ok considering?” She asked taking another long sip of her coffee, not noticing the spec of cream that remained on her upper lip. Sakura wondered how he managed to do it all and how much stress she would be under if put in half of that situation
“The takeover was a bitch and I can’t find a good assistant to save my life plus I don’t know anyone in this town besides well, you and I just found that out.” Taking a moment to lean in close to her Sakura froze.
Was he going to kiss me? This is just like the wedding I’m freezing. He looks so good but we haven’t spoken in nearly a year! Oh kami please. Sakura thought before noticing him remove the offending cream and take it between his own lips.
“Think you would oppose to showing me a few places where I can lesson my will to murder? A good gym and a good bar would be only for the greater good at this point.” He teased and she frowned as he seemingly looked like he was enjoying this torture he was putting on her body.
“Yeah, I do. Perks of growing up around here and going to undergrad here.” Taking their collective silence Gaara moved to give her one of his smirks and asked.
“I might actually have to take you on a date then cherry blossom. Think you could handle me this time?” Sakura blushed and turned to look out at the scenery before them. The land of fire was changing into the more tropical more scenic land of Tea, though as Naruto’s resort was on the coast it would still take another hour or so to get there.
Taking the pause neither as a good or bad thing, Gaara finished up his coffee and stood up to stretch before glancing down at her. “Come on, if we’re late Naruto will assume I’m dead and blow up my phone to the point of me throwing it out the car, and between you and me I really can’t lose another phone this quarter.”
Giggling Sakura stood up and followed him to the car for the last leg of their journey. “Alright but just keep to driving safely. Late or not if I’m dead I can’t patch you up after a car crash.”
“I’ll definitely keep you alive but no promises on 100% safety Sakura.” He chuckled twirling his keys in his hands. “I gotta live a little reckless or I’ll go insane.” He paused before fully getting in the driver's side, “Well more than I already am.”
Sakura was attached to her phone at their bachelorette party spa night. The timid Hinata not one of clubbing or strippers so Sakura and Hanabi planned an elegant pamper night for all of the bridesmaids.
“Forehead, this is a girls night. Stop texting your prince charming of a boyfriend and come join us.” Ino chastised before moving to see what she was actually looking at.
“Oh my God girls she actually is texting Gaara.” Stealing Sakura’s phone to bring it to the girls Ino giggled much to Sakura’s chagrin.
“Let me see here, ooh, pamper night going well. Promise me you’ll send pics of Naruto if he does anything stupid?”
Sakura tried and failed to grab it, only to have it thrown to Ten-Ten, who continued reading.
“What’s in it for me? And he added a winky face!”
“Guys, come on.” Sakura groaned moving to grab it only to have the phone thrown to Hanabi.
“That’s not very Best Man behavior of you.” Hanabi paused before cracking up. “Oh my god Sakura is full-on flirting and I think Gaara is flirting back. He just responded.
“What did he say?” Ino grinned moving to hold Sakura down with Ten-Ten at the assist.
“He said, I may be the best man but that doesn’t make me good. I think we should respond.” Hanabi chuckled and mortified Sakura tried to escape.
“Hanabi, don’t.” Sakura begged.
“Kid you got this, we’ll give you the honors.” Ten-Ten chuckled and Sakura wiggled stronger before moving out of their grasp.
“And, send.” Hanabi chuckled giving Sakura her phone back and watching her pale in complexion, then only more so when the girls heard the ping of a response.
“So,” The bride-to-be finally spoke up. “What did he say?”
Nearly too shocked to respond, Ino looked over her shoulder and squealed before announcing.
“So our lovely Hanabi moved us with her elegant words of asking the very tasteful So what are you good at? And it looks like our little cherry blossom might have caught herself a billionaire.”
“Why?” Ten-Ten asked before Sakura took back her phone and shut it off.
“Because,” Ino continued. “He told forehead that he could schedule some time to show her later if she liked.”
Sakura shook her head from her blush and tried to calm herself from her memories of Gaara at the wedding. They were nearly inseparable then. He was always so smart, and so good with his words.
“Are you too warm Cherry Blossom?” Gaara added moving to turn up the air and finally turn on the radio, shifting the dial till some form of music could be heard.
“Maybe a bit, though I’m not exactly uncomfortable.” She whispered out looking at the road flying past them as Gaara sped them along the highway.
“So I still make you squirm is all. I know how to fix that.” He chuckled and Sakura involuntarily shuddered before responding.
“The wedding was a mistake. I don’t normally do things like that and I shouldn’t have gone as far with you that night.”
“Oh calm down cupcake I kept my pants on. You leading me on and then ghosting after just a kiss when you were acting like you wanted a lot more than that should make me a little antsy to be near you again not the other way around.” He scoffed moving to turn on their exit and get to the last leg of their journey.
It was the reception. The ceremony was lovely Gaara’s call had come through and it turns out Haku was someone Naruto had met a long time ago and had changed his life. The blonde idiot fully burst into tears at the sight of the delicate man softly singing as his bride came down the aisle. The pictures had all been taken the speeches given and now it was simply time for the party that they all knew Naruto could throw. Sakura was taking a well-deserved spot of air when she saw her best man on the balcony having a cigarette.
“You gave a wonderful speech. I think a couple of people cried, Iruka-sensei I know did.” She chuckled and he turned and smirked when he noticed it was her. Offering her a cigarette that she politely declined, he took a step to close the distance between them.
“I’m glad you enjoyed it Sakura, I’ve always had a knack for a good speech. Yours was pretty cute as well. I can tell Hinata really enjoyed it.”
Blushing slightly Sakura swirled the bit of champagne she had in her glass before asking, “How long are you in town for?”
“Couple days, then I have to head back.” Pausing when he saw her mood utterly deflate he moved to hold her chin. “But I can always make the most of my trip now.” He grinned and pulled her in for a breath-stealing kiss.
It made her weak at the knees. She felt dizzy. She felt like everything she had ever desired was in that kiss and so much more could be had, and it terrified Sakura. Pulling back she looked at him and quickly uttered out a soft. “I have to go.” Before disappearing from the venue.
It took a long time for Sakura to realize why she bolted when all her body was screaming at her to do was screw Gaara in his hotel room till the sun came up. He terrified her. Gaara had this type of undeniable power to him. He wasn’t overly tall. He was fit but no monster. He was beautiful but not in a way that was common and yet anytime Gaara spoke the entire room always gave him 100% of their attention. He was in control at all times and that was not something Sakura had any idea how to deal with. She was Sakura Haruno. She was a woman who always called the shots and she certainly was not one who knew how to deal with an alpha like Gaara; especially for a one night stand.
Not to mention that she had just had a rather ugly breakup with Sasuke Uchiha and was learning to be on her own; something that would have been ruined if it just looked like she fell into the closest thing available. So nothing about their current predicament made it seem like they should start a relationship and rather than deal with Gaara’s temptation of simply being there nor the teasing of her friends Sakura bolted and went back to the safety of her condo and her job.
She honestly thought she had gotten over her handsome wedding parter but the time apart clearly didn’t change the way her eyes still longed to undress him or the way she would follow the curve of his lips when he talked. How she could picture those hands of his wrapped around her body and how even going back to her deepest of crushes should she ever remember being remotely attracted to anyone else.
“We’re gonna be there soon.” Gaara murmured pulling her out of her thoughts and she took one last look at the curve of his jawline and how it tensed slightly as he turned before she moved to look at them entering the gates of the property.
Gaara parked briefly and before Sakura could react he had gotten out and moved to open the door for her. “One best friend of Naruto’s arrived safe and sound. Now I just need to collect my fee.” He smirked and Sakura scoffed and looked up at him.
“And what fee would that be?”
“I’ll take it in installments over the course of the weekend but I will go ahead and get my first payment before we spy the knucklehead.” He teased and pulled her up close to him. She could feel his chest pressed against hers. Smell that amazing cinnamon scent that only he had. Their lips were barely separated, their breath intertwined in a way that begged them to kiss.
She was shocked, she was aroused and she had just closed her eyes to let them have their second kiss when seemingly as soon as it started it was over and he pulled her away.
“What was that?” She asked slightly out of breath and angry at the overflow of emotions that were racing through her body.
“Evidence that you still want me so bad you can barely stand it.” Pulling her close to whisper in her ear and she actually did let out a soft moan as he whispered out.
“Our mutual friend has so kindly scheduled us some time together. I think this is the perfect opportunity for me to show you something I’m rather good at.” He grinned and pulled away grabbing both of their bags as they walked towards the entrance to the resort.
I really should have stayed at home. Sakura thought to herself as she walked behind Gaara and saw the genuine smile on his face as he greeted Naruto and she finally saw her best friend of over 20 years.
But it had been a while since I’ve had a vacation. Her mind rebutted. Maybe he is just an added part of the relaxation?
“Come on Sakura, Naruto says our rooms are right next to each other isn’t that convenient?” He added and resumed carrying both of their luggage.
Or maybe this weekend will be the most tiring vacation I have ever had.
