Writing Master List
Here are my stories for Cillian and some of his characters, also tagged #fkmarrycilllibrary. The most recent stories are listed first for each category.
These are mostly, but not all, smutty reads, noted by this handy symbol: 🔞.
I typically write one shots and drabbles, rather than chapter stories. Character stories are pretty true to canon, unless otherwise specified. Unless otherwise specified, RPF stories are AU in the same way--Cillian is single, with no kids.
I tend to not take requests, only because I am not the fastest of writers, and I don't want to leave anyone hanging. 🙃 But do send an idea of you have one--I've sometimes dropped everything to pursue a juicy idea. I'm chaotic like that. 😉
I'm just getting started in this fandom, but for more of my work, check out @brownskinsugarplum76 for Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) stories, and @iggy-licious for Iggy Pop stories. We love a niche music fandom. 🥰
Last, please check for my perpetual reading list by searching #cillianwriterfam . Please bear with me as I slowly add to this tag.
Thanks for stopping by and reading! ❤️

Can you do a part two of Tommy and the girl he adopt from the orphanage I gotta see more of her relationship with Noah Solomon’s. And I beg an plead can you do a scene where the whole family goes to the fair and Noah’s there with Alfie. She’s riding on the Ferris wheel with like a friend or something she might be in a fight lol it’s Noah an please I beg you use the scene from the note book where Noah jumps up and hangs from the beg her to go forgive him. But she cheekily undoes his pants like Allie did and her whole family and alfie are watching it unfold !! Please
Dear Anon,
I wanted this so badly that I let this request jump the que. I've never seen the notebook and I had a different slightly more ridiculous scenario that popped into my head hopefully this is satisfactory!
Warnings: Angry dads, peaky typical violence, kissing, suggested sexual content, Aunt Polly loves you enough to stay up all night.
Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were a lot of things your parents did right and knowing how to motivate you to do well was one of them.
The fair was in town that weekend and if you got top marks on your finals, they would take you, and if you got okay marks Esme and John said they would take you behind their back. But you wanted to see your dad at the fair.
Lizzie always looked out of place because of how beautiful she looked. While Tommy always looked out of place because he looked like he was coming from a funeral or causing one. The thought of him taking you to the fair brought you a whole mix of feelings. Part of you thought it was funny, the other remembered how badly you’d wanted your dad to take you when you were little.
When Noah called to let you know that he and his family were also planning on going you refused to acknowledge the looming possibility that it could go horrifically wrong. He’d called to ask if it would be better that they go on a different day, but you assured him that was ridiculous. In your eyes, they were business friends. But still friends, no reason to give each other a hard time or cause a scene.
“Don’t worry about it Noah, I’m sure they will manage” You fought to get the words out in a reasonable tone. “If any problems come up, I’ll have us leave right away.”
“Don’t worry about it love, If things kick up on our end we can leave. I know how much you wanted to go.” His voice was like honey, and you just wanted to drown in it forever. God and he cared so much.
“That’s really sweet of you. I- I think it will be fine.” You said with a smile you hoped he could hear.
“I’ll call you before bed” There was a loud commotion behind him and you assumed he must be calling you from his dad’s work.
“And I’ll answer.” You responded back. Since you were going steady he’d call you every night before bed. Sometimes to chat, other times just to tell you he hoped you slept well. The line went dead and you let out a triumphant squeal.
Your dad flung open the study door scanning the room. Looking around the room and finding nothing out of place or alarming, his face fell and he let out a sigh.
“What's he done this time eh? Bloody boy -” He continued to grumble but you cut him off with a big hug. Normally you kept your screams of excitement and any loud noises to an absolute minimum because you hated how it set him off. War flashed in his eyes every time, you never knew what to do so you just hugged him and hope it helped.
“Nothing, nothing. Just excited to go to the fair.”
“Nothing to do with the Solomons also going to the fair then?” He responded easily holding you back. Your eyes went wide and you pulled away enough to look up at him. “That’s right us dad’s talk you know.” You froze up even more. Did Noah talk about you? Did Alfie?
“What do you talk about?” He looked at you for a long second holding you in suspense.
“Business and now thanks to you coordinated trips to the fair.” He sighed.
“Wait. Wait. Wait. He coordinate it? Like he, you know, he tried to get us all there at the same time?”
“According to Alfie, he won’t shut up about it. Wants us all to get along or something started talking about family trips out to the beach house, proposing after graduation, moving you off to London,” He watched your face twist up in horror before tickling you.
“DAD!” You shouted pushing his hands off you. He moved past you to put his briefcase on his desk.
“Caught your mother listening in on the phone with Esme in the kitchen.” He smiled at you and it was enough that you stopped bothering him even though you wanted to. “Not my fault, your mother knows no boundaries, trust me.”
“I’ll have to sort that out later.” You said sternly. You already knew that they listened in that’s why you had come up with codded phrases and words.
“Can we go still go then?” You asked him hesitantly.
“I’m not going to cause a gang fight at a family fair,” He said giving you a look that made you feel bad for implying such things. “ I know how to behave myself, it's Alfie we need to watch out for.”
You made a mental note to ask John what the history was between the two men next time he was drunk.
“So that’s a yes?” You asked hopefully.
“It’s not a no.” He answered back and you did a happy dance. “Now go bother your mother for invading your privacy, I have a lot to do”
You ran out of his study and went right into the kitchen, opening the door suddenly, startling the women on the other side. It wasn't even dinner yet and you could see that their faces were already quite rosy. You stared at them for a moment like you felt Tommy would, and they sat there looking suspicious.
“Noah’s going to be at the fair, with his family.” They both nodded and hummed, you watched Esme look out the window and Lizzie focus her attention on the napkin in front of her. “But I’m sure you already knew that”
You laughed as they both started blaming each other and rambling excuses. Normally it would irritate you but nothing could dampen your mood today.
“So naturally I’ll need help figuring out what to wear,” You said letting them off the hook. You watch the relief and Esme playfully smacked you on the bottom.
“Don’t do that your Aunty. I’m an old woman now!” She scolded
“If you're an old woman what does that make me eh?” Lizzie shot back. They continued on bantering and you claimed your usual spot at the table. Polly eventually showed up and joined in.
Where ever the women were, the men were usually not far behind. No better way to spend a Friday night than drinking with your family till the sun comes up. It was loud and your ribs always hurt afterward from laughing and singing. As things were starting to come to an end you sat on Tommy’s lap and got awarded your one alcoholic drink of the night.

Getting to the fair was surprisingly easy. Everyone was going but they were taking their own cars, except you were picking up Polly. She slid into the back seat looking mighty hungover from the night before despite it being nearly 5 o’clock in the evening.
She had her sunglasses on and before you said anything to her she held her hand up to silence you. She got settled and put her head on your shoulder tasking you with being a good pillow.
After weeks of waiting and working hard, you were finally there. You followed your cousins leaving the parents to walk around at their own pace.
You went along with whatever they wanted to do while you waited for Noah to get there. More than anything you wanted a kiss at the top of the Ferris wheel. Something your mind had cooked up in the many fantasies about how the day was going to go. Something that motivated you when you would start falling asleep on your textbook.
You were determined to get that kiss at the top.
Until you bumped into Roger. Why did gangsters think sending all their kids to the same school was a good idea?
“Ah! There you are! Was hoping I’d bump into you.” He smile at you and your stomach turned into a knot.
“Hi, Roger.” You said politely. “Was just about to go -”
“Come with me on the Ferris wheel, Eh?” He cut you off making you even more annoyed. But the line was moving and he looped his arm into yours. The only way out of it would be to cause a big scene. His eyes narrowed and you got dragged towards the little, pink car. Once off this contraption you were going make this boy's life a living hell. Before all the way in you made one more scan of the crowd for your dad somehow thinking he’d be the answer to all of this.
He started droning on about how you should go on some dates with him, get to know his family, leaving Noah behind. You felt your face get hot with anger, tears threatening to spill over on how such a terrible boy could cause such problems in your life. You should have started beating on him. Done something other than just go along with it. Your mind got worse and worse, as the thing started to move, you immediately regretted your decision of coming at all.
You started to panic being in a space with this asshole, while also moving away from the ground. Your heart started to hammer and your hands got shaky.
“You afraid, love?” He challenged, placing his hand on your knee suggestively. You pushed his hand away fighting the urge to start smacking him, it would only rock the car sending you into a fit. You tried desperately to focus on your breathing. After this was over you could run straight to your dad and leave. Go home to where it was safe. When suddenly the car made a horrid swinging motion.
__________________________________________________
“What do you mean she’s on the Ferris wheel?” Shock washed over Noah as he looked up towards the contraption. All you had talked about was how badly you wished he could come so they could ride the bloody thing.
“I thought she was up there with you,” Finn said coldly. Noah could tell Finn wasn't thrilled with the situation. He looked up and recognized Rodger’s navy blue cap. After his vile comments about her circulated to Noah he'd told her to stay as far away from him as possible. Realizing what he could be up to with her trapped in there all his sensibility disappeared.
Without thinking, or remembering his fear of heights, he was overcome with anger.
“That fucking bastard!” The words were out of his mouth as he charged towards the ride. The thought of him putting his hands on you trapped in that stupid pink car was enough to send him over the fence and leaping up into the air.

“Pulling my boy away from his faith. That’s what your little harlot of a daughter is doing.” Alfie said making Tommy’s fists clench. He could tell that Alfie regretted his choice of words without him saying anything so he let it go.
“Your dodgy son is going to drag her right back to the sewers.” He answered smoothly. And that's exactly what the boy was going to do. Drag her right back into the life he fought to pull the family out of.
“Should have raised her better.” He quipped back. Lizzie came and took his arm.
“Lovely girl you got there Mrs. Shelby,” Alfie said politely. “I haven't had the pleasure yet but I’ve heard a lot about her.”
“Likewise! Noah seems to have made quite the impression on her.” Lizzie smiled politely. Tommy looked around for any type of distraction when he noticed a boy hanging from the Ferris wheel. A commotion of yelling was going on when he noticed that it was his kid in the fucking car.
“Fuck!” Tommy took off towards the ride not able to do anything other than get to her as soon as possible. Dumb fucking kids were going to send her to her death fucking around like that.
Once he got close he could hear the shouting match. Of course, it was that stupid boy -
“What’s your girl done, that’s got my boy dangling 20ft in the air?!” Alfie demanded and it took everything in Tommy to avoid pulling his gun.
“WHY IS YOUR SON TRYING TO KILL HER EH?” He screamed back. He heard her let out a yelp and their attention refocused on the commotion in the sky.
“NOAH DON’T ITS NOT WORTH IT.” he hated seeing her in so much distress. He was either going to shoot someone or puke. Or both.
“YES IT FUCKING IS. HE’S DEAD. FUCKING DEAD.”
“WHO’S DEAD?” Lizzie screamed up causing him to jump.
“ROGER” The two of them screamed down in unison.
“YOU KILLED HIM THEN?” Alfie shouted and Tommy wondered how on earth his life decisions put him in such a ridiculous situation.
“NOT YET” Noah called down. Tommy hated the boy, more than anything. But watching his daughter's hands hold on to the edge and the conviction in his eyes to keep her away from the Roger boy, he had to say it was something he thought only himself capable of at that age.
The boy climbed into the car causing it to lurch. Tommy instinctively moved forward as if he could somehow catch her. Once the car steadied he didn't need to be there to know what was happening.
The car moved to the top taking them out of view.
__________________________________________________
Noah didn't waste any time. His fist mashed against Roger's face what felt like a hundred times. It was quick and the other boy didn't stand a chance. You looked at his hands, red knuckles split open, the way his arms looked with his sleeves rolled up. How he was out of breath, the fact that he did all of that for the worry that a boy might harm you.
The violence was a part of life in the peaky blinders, and while it was still alarming to you, you knew that if anyone in your family had found out about it later, a story much the same as the one unfolding before you would have been written just the same.
Same story, but this did something much different to you. You wanted nothing more than to kiss him. Not because you were at the top of a stupid Ferris Wheel, but because he was just so unbelievably hot.
It was over in seconds and he looked at you causing your heart to stop.
“Fuck” he breathed pushing the hair from his face. “You alright?!” he moved to kneel in front of you, his hands running over you. “Are you hurt? Did he hurt you?”
You could only sort of hear him as your eyes focused in on his mouth. You grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him close to you slotting your lips together.
You felt his hands grip onto you tightly, causing you to moan. You were happy to be out of view from the congregation of angry parents. Suddenly your mind was filled with all the sorts of things you needed from him, things you’d have to find a way to ask for. He broke the kiss as you realized the ride was coming back down. He sat down next to you, and quickly fixed your top and adjusted the pendant on your necklace. You were grateful that his mind was still functioning, you were in shock that people could make each other feel such things.
Never in your life had you seen people kiss like that, you didn't know that’s what people felt when they looked at each other. Suddenly you wondered how anyone managed to get anything done. Why get out of bed when you could feel like this?
________________________________________________________________________
“She’s going to be the death of him,” Alfie whispered.
“If he - fuck - I swear -” Tommy was too upset to form words.
“I know. He won’t” Alfie answered back and there was an honesty in his eyes that he trusted.
“I’d destroy you.” Lizzie put her hand on his arm in warning.
“I know.”
Tommy gave him a curt nod in response. Then they set in on getting the crowd to disperse.
“RIDE CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE PEAKY BLINDERS” Arthur called out firing his gun in the air. It wasn't what Tommy would have done, drawing even more attention to the messy situation but once that pink car was down he was grateful everyone had fucked off.
He assessed the situation carefully, his daughter looked fine, flushed, but okay. His arm was around her and that seemed to be where her focus was. The boy had an impressive red hand, hanging off of her shoulder.
Once the door was open, he knew exactly who this Roger was, and his father was going to -
“Drive by tomorrow morning at the paper shop?” Alfie said reading his mind.
“Bit extreme isn't it? Surely we should go for something more personal?” Lizzie said casually.
“I’ll call you later,” Tommy answered. He didn’t have to speak or move. She spoke to the boy with a look of affection and then ran to his side immediately. A look of apology was written on her face.
“We’ll deal with this,” Alfie told him, before giving Noah a look of pride. He would thank him for it later. He put his arm around her and the family all moved out in a unit piling into black cars.
__________________________________________________
Everyone had gone home, except Polly insisted on staying over. In some ways, you were grateful as your parents were in the study arguing. There was a knock at the door and Polly poked her head in.
“Oh what’s that face for, got a boy who’s willing to fight for ya.” She gave you a soft smile.
“I feel terrible. I don’t know if he will forgive me.” Tears started to pool in your eyes.
“Noah? Hardly your fault -”
“Dad.” You corrected her. He couldn't even look at you, the car ride home was spent in silence. He’d shut himself into the study as soon as he got home. After Lizzie knew you were alright she went in after him and they’d been shouting since. Polly snorted.
“Don’t ever worry about Thomas. He worries about himself.” Polly said with an edge to her voice you didn’t like. You watched her face as she thought about it for a moment. “He loves us all the best way he knows how. He’s done things - that none of us should have forgiven him for. But we do because we are family. The same kindness will be shown to you.” She lit a cigarette as if it would chase the unwanted feelings away. “Not that you fucked up at all. You chose to not cause a public scene thinking he would probably just try to chat you up. But that’s the problem with these boys. They think the whole world is being handed to them from their fathers, so they can take as they please.”
You thought about what she was saying, hoping that it didn’t apply to Noah.
“Can I bring him over for tea? I want someone to meet him.” You wanted some advice or approval. Bringing him to Polly would be the least stressful, but if Lizzie found out she’d be hurt, Esme would also be pissed. You sighed.
“Think he’s got you beat love.” You followed where her eyes were focused and saw him climbing up over the balcony railing fighting with the flowing green vines.
“I’ll leave you two alone then.” She winked at you with a smile. “I’ll try to keep an eye out for your dad” She got up and left you making you feel a whole wave of nerves. You went over to the glass door and opened it.
“Shit did your aunt see me?”
“Yeah, she knows. Said she’d give us a bit of space.” You hoped that he wasn’t going to hurt you, that conversation with Polly was definitely unfinished, but she wouldn’t have left you with him if she wasn’t sure that it was alright.
“Will you be in trouble?” He brushed the foliage off of his clothes giving you a look of concern that erased all of your worries.
“She said she’d keep an eye for dad.” You shrugged and smiled at him.
You motioned for him to come in and watched as he looked over your room. Its structure was fit for a princess but it was covered in pictures and postcards from family members as they traveled. Scarves and charms hung from the ceiling, most of them made at Polly’s house. A large brown stuffed bear beside your pillow that Tommy had gotten you for your first Christmas together, a charm that may include one of his stolen cufflinks, and one of Lizzie’s earrings hug directly above your bed watching over you. Most people said it looked like a jungle, but Polly assured you it was a temple worth being proud of.
“It’s a bit much but erm”
“It’s great.” He smile at you, and all you could think about was throwing yourself at him. What would you do after kissing? What had he done before you? Your stomach twisted unsure of what his expectations were of you.
“I called, before I could get a word in he told me to fuck off, then hung up the phone. Wanted to make sure you were alright after everything.” You blushed in embarrassment and also resisted the urge to laugh.
“Sorry-”
“It’s alright.” He stopped you before you could start apologizing. You pulled him down to sit on the bed and the two of you started talking about what happened, how his dad handled it, and what you were going to do about the parents.
He was very considerate, trying to take on the bulk of the responsibility, always checking in for what you wanted from the situation. The more you talked the more you leaned into him. The more you settled against his shoulder the heavier your eyes got.
__________________________________________________
Polly listened outside the door, for safety of course. Boys were unpredictable in the sense that they were very predictable. After watching the boys in this family cause unspeakable damage she was going to be sure that boy treated her right.
Listening to his offer to come over tomorrow morning to talk to Tommy, and offering her every possibility under the sun to make things easier on her. He even suggested taking the whole family out for dinner. She responded kindly saying she’d ask her mother what was best. Then he started asking what she wanted out of a relationship with him.
Polly’s heart gave a painful twitch, it was entirely too personal a conversation to be listening to, but curiosity kept her glued to the spot. There was an innocence that was only possible from young love, but they were handling it much better than she ever did. Talking about all sorts of things rather than running into trouble and heartbreak. After it got very quiet - she risked poking her head in to see them both passed out. She wished she could get a photo, just to keep stashed away.
Shutting the door, she moved down the stairs to see if Thomas was done shouting his heart out. Putting her ear against the door she could just make out what they were saying.
“If anything happens to her it’s my fault. It’s always my fault.” His voice was thick with a heavy sadness she didn't think him capable of expressing.
“Leaving her there would have been a life worse than death, I’ve walked both paths, this one is a million times better,” Lizze assured him quietly.
“Promise me I haven't ruined her life?” He was just above begging, but not by much. Her heart went out to that little boy that wasn't too much younger than her. Sweeter than ever, determined to be better than his father. Realizations set in about him that took him in a different light.
“Promise,” Lizzie said softly. Polly remembered the way they used to talk to each other and wondered how a mouthy teenager accomplished what saints couldn't.
“And what if he knocks her up then?” An edge of panic in his voice confirmed that he was indeed thawed out to something close to the man he was before all the madness.
“He’d be no better than you,” Lizzie responded sharply, and Polly hoped they wouldn't start at it again.
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry.” He choked on the words. “For all of it, for John, Grace, for Ruby. All of it was me, and I -” He was cut off and a whole commotion of passionate sounds erupted.
They were going to seek peace in each other in the best way they knew how. Polly moved back upstairs and settled into her room, keeping the door open for any problems. Pouring herself a whiskey she wondered if ever there would be a man for her. Picking up her book she hoped it would keep her own loneliness at bay.
She stayed up making sure to wake the two of them up to say goodbye before Tommy woke up. The boy awkwardly apologising and stumbling over his thank yous. After he was out the balcony her attention set in on the girl.
“Thank you.” She said softly.
“Ah, what are Aunties for eh?” She smiled. “Tea or are we having a lie-in?”
“Tea,” she said brightly. “We have lots to talk about.”
Going down to the kitchens, Polly was not surprised to find the contents of Tommy’s office in shambles.
“What happened?!”
Polly only gave her a look and laughed at the disgusted look her face twisted into. “I think it's best we let them sleep in.”

Ok another difference. Tommy and Grace, two years together, marry, and Tommy gently takes her to bed.
Tommy and Lizzie, supposedly married for two years, used to sometimes have casual sex. He wants to fuck her like when she was a prostitute and he was her client, and she has to beg him for at least this time in bed.
I think there is a big difference in how Tommy treats his two wives.

One Shot: The Promise of Spring
Tumblr media
1505 words
Tommy Shelby x Lizzie Shelby
No smut; all ages
AU-ish, with creative liberties taken, but there are 🚨spoilers🚨
File this under better late than never ☺️. It's my contribution for @runnning-outof-time ’s 4K follower celebration. Congrats again! Thank you for sharing your creativity with us. ❤️
The idea of putting the characters in situations that deviate from the norm sounded like fun. What I came up with is probably not fluff for the average character, but it's certainly a departure for Tommy, and it does leave him more vulnerable than usual. Lizzie seemed like the perfect love interest for the idea I had in mind.
I'd like to return to this and write another part in the future, but I can't promise when. ☺️
Thank you for reading. ❤️
Tommy strode across the lawn briskly, gloved hands balled in fists, toward the woods of his estate. He couldn't sleep, and he couldn't sit in his office for another minute.
It was just after dawn. The cold air of late winter sliced at his cheeks. He'd hoped the fresh air would wake him up and bring him to his senses.
He needed to be alone, and that time of day gave him quiet, if not also peace. There was no nagging from Lizzie, even though he knew that it came from a place of love and justified concern. No squeals for playtime from the children. Getting lost in their joy right now would only make him lose focus. No muddled big brother advice from Arthur, or sisterly tough love from Ada. And Polly… just like John, he'd never speak to her again, and not because of an argument. None of them, dead or alive, could help him or console him. He needed time, and quiet, to think of his next move.
It was always the same when it felt like the walls were closing in, like the next invisible threat was coming for his throne. There was something about being in nature that enabled him to do his best thinking. In these moments, he felt closest to his ancestors. They knew there was freedom in movement, wisdom in the wind, power to be gleaned from the majesty of the earth and the trees. Like them, it was the wellspring from which he replenished his inner strength. If it wasn't so cold, he probably would've slept outside that night, like he'd done so often when he was younger.
He approached his favorite spot, a clearing near the ribbon of creek that meandered through his property. He contemplated the creek, noticing that it wasn't completely frozen over, like it was the last time he'd gone out that far, for a similar reason. The last time, he'd gotten the answers he needed. This time? He was not so certain that he would find them.
He fished his cigarettes and lighter out of his coat pocket. “What the fuck am I going to do…” He muttered out loud after the first pull of nicotine. Like the tendrils of smoke wafting from the cigarette, his words hung in the air briefly before fading away, without a good answer.
He scanned the field and woods beyond, and then he looked to the sky, watching the occasional bird swoop and soar, then alight in a tree. He continued to smoke and think. He closed his eyes, inhaled and exhaled deeply, and listened to the rustling of the wind.
He was tired of living two lives, as a rising MP, in addition to still being a kingpin, albeit one relegated to the shadows more and more every day. Tired of always having to be on guard. Tired of keeping so many secrets from Lizzie out of what he considered to be protection. He opened his eyes. No ideas were forthcoming. Not yet. As his problems got bigger, the solutions were harder to come by.
He decided to go back to his office and tend to the day’s phone calls and mail, to clear his desk of mundane tasks so there were fewer things to think about.
He dropped his cigarette and stamped it out. While watching the embers die on the ground, he saw a familiar flash of yellow and walked over to it.
Daffodils. Just three flowers so far, but more would come as the weather warmed. They were Lizzie's favorite, and he'd had them planted throughout the property. He remembered how excited she was, during their first spring at the estate, to see a large patch of them on the lawn outside their bedroom window, a sea of flowers in one of the happiest colors. He was pleased to give her a bit of joy after all the pain he had caused, all the pain he was still causing.
Lizzie… Blessed, loyal Lizzie. She deserved better, he thought.
He knew what he needed to do.
***
He stood in the dining room doorway, watching her. He'd removed his outerwear earlier and warmed himself by the fireplace in his office, gathering his thoughts before seeking her out.
Lizzie was reading the newspaper and picking at her soft-boiled egg, toast, and tea. She was alone in the large room, and her expression was weary. The look was far too familiar these days. He couldn't remember the last time she'd smiled with the same happiness as when their world was simpler, like when he'd bought her a typewriter to practice on a few years before. No, he'd never wish for simpler times when his family was so much better taken care of now. He knew wishes would be pointless, anyway–a naive and misplaced use of energy. But he hated the way she'd given so much of herself–to him, and to the business, as it grew–while only getting the occasional fragment of joy. Normally this feeling was locked away in the depths of his heart, but it surfaced today, and he needed to address it. For both of them.
“Oi, Lizzie.” He cursed himself silently when she startled at the sound of his voice. He crossed the room quickly and stood by her side.
He tried again, softer this time. “Lizzie. Hey. We need to get away this weekend.” He gently rested a hand on her cashmere-covered shoulder.
She didn't bother to look up at him. She just dropped her heavy silver cutlery on the Wedgewood plate and sighed. “What is it this time, Tommy? A mass execution here, led by Arthur? Or did your spirits tell you bloody Nosferatu is coming for the children?” With that, she looked at Tommy, rolled her eyes, and waited for his next order, an exhausted soldier in a never-ending battle.
“No.” He sat down next to her. “You and me. We need to get away. Us. We need… We need something different. For a few days, eh? Away from this,” he said, gesturing to the grandeur of the room. “It won't change this,” he said, gesturing again, “this new, fucking world, with all its fucking problems, but… You need a break. I… I need a fucking break. I can't sleep. Can't think. Can't fucking think right now, Lizzie. And this?” He looked around, settling on the large family portrait on the wall. “This world of ours, that's supposed to be so much fucking better than Small Heath? This isn't safe when I can't think.”
His stare never wavered from her eyes, but his chest rose and fell rapidly with his ragged breath. He closed his eyes to compose himself, then took Lizzie's hands into his.
He swallowed hard before continuing. “What I need most is you. Love, honor, and cherish, eh? That's what the vows were, what I promised, for you, in front of everyone. I know you don't feel very cherished by me. But that… It changes now. It changes now, Lizzie. You are too fucking important to me.”
He looked away, cleared his throat, and trained his eyes on her again. Her expression had softened the tiniest bit. It would be imperceptible to anyone else, but he knew. This is what she'd wanted to hear for so long now.
“I know, Tommy,” she murmured. She squeezed his hand. “I know. I've always known, but I've wanted to hear it from you. But not just hear it,” she said, tears forming in her eyes. “I've needed to feel it, too. I haven't felt it in a long, long time from you,” she said, as her tears started to fall.
“Oi.” This time, he said it softly, before cradling her face with his hands and wiping away her tears. “Lizzie. I know. And like I said, that changes now. After breakfast, I want you to find a place. Find somewhere, away from here, that we can go and have a weekend. Alone. This will be the first, but it won't be the last. I promise you that. I'll put Ada in charge, have her spend the weekend here. The children will be in good hands. And we'll have some time alone. And you can ask me any questions you have. About anything. And I will tell you everything. I can't… I won't shut you out anymore. I do love you, Lizzie, even when it feels like my body is here and my mind is everywhere else but with you.”
They kissed, and Tommy relaxed. He'd never remove all the weight of his duties off his shoulders, but he was confident that he could do better for Lizzie. And maybe, after the weekend, he'd have a better sense of what to do with all the other problems piling up.
Lizzie held his face with one hand, tracing his cheek with her thumb. “All right, Tommy." She smiled the smallest of smiles. She was still wary of his promise, but she was more hopeful than she'd been in a long time. "I’ll look into it. Is there anywhere you had in mind?”
“No. Just… Anywhere but Margate. And before you ask, I will tell you why.”

Closing Walls & Ticking Clocks is one of my favourite current series from you and I'd love a chapter where both sides of the family 'attempt' to have a peaceful dinner as a truce that eventually turns into the chaos one would expect when the Solomons + the Shelbys come together 🤭🙈 lots of love from Cass, proud of you always my friend.
Lovely Cass!
This is a whole bunch of things and it does include a dinner but most of the chaos will be in the next chapter! Hope you like where this is going. Love you ❤️
Rated: nothing explicit. The reader has an anxiety attack - not described in too much detail, but there are flashbacks to abuse, and she is comforted immediately. Mentions of losing a baby in the past, usual Shelby drama / peaky related themes

You watched closely as Lizzie and Tommy navigated their relationship. He’d become much more protective of her, trying to be by her side more.
You’d sneakily traded bits and pieces of information about you and Noah to Polly till she was tipsy enough to give you more details about what had happened to Ruby. Once finished her eyes glazed over as she looked into the fire. You knew that she put on a sunny exterior for you and the kids, but deep down she looked an awful lot like Tommy in these moments.
Tired.
There were little wrinkles on her face that you’d not previously noticed and suddenly you felt the familiar pain of knowing that nothing lasts forever. Your eyes watered slightly at the thought of losing everyone one day.
“Time is all you have in the end.” She said darkly as if reading your thoughts. “Lizzie’s tough, she’ll be fine, love.” She followed in her usual tone.
The next few days you felt weighed down by Lizzie’s story. Unfortunately, there was nothing for you to do other than hope and pray that things would be different. Doctors were in and out frequently, and you’d walk in step with them asking questions till Tommy would tell you off.
The only thing that took your mind off of her, was the ever-growing threat against the family. Faceless, nameless, and motivated by revenge. No one would answer your questions or concerns.
Not knowing what else to do you called Noah. Mostly because you missed him, but also because you hoped that if Alfie had heard anything Noah would pass it along to you. The sound of his deep voice was enough to make your shoulders drop and you slid down the kitchen wall, taking a stolen cigarette out of your pocket. You started off with the code immediately, assuming anyone could be listening to your calls.
“I got a new coat ordered, it's Red. Going to match my Red shoes.” You said in a girly tone.
Red - things are sketchy, don't say too much.
“I liked the green one personally. Should I come around later? ” There was a faint tone of worry in his voice that made your knees weak.
“No, dad’s very busy. Lots of things happening with the business, you know how it can get.” You brushed him off taking a long drag of your cigarette. Wishing more than anything you could rest in his arms for a bit.
“I miss you.” He said softly and you heard an eruption of abuse calling after him from the men in the warehouse.
“I miss you too. Tell your dad I say hi? Might need to bring some apples around to make a pie one of these days.”
Apples - help.
“I’m sure he’d like that. When are you available to come around?”
“Anytime over the next few weeks should be fine. Nothing urgent is happening with me at the moment.” Things felt very urgent. But you didn't want to worry him.
“Just missing you both. Your dad always has so much to say.” You laughed a little remembering the brief meeting you’d had with him.
“We miss you too, love.”
“I’ll call you tonight.”
“Bye.” The line went dead and you hoped he understood what you were asking for.
You took a few breaths before getting back on your feet. You quickly opened a window and aired out the space before going up to find Lizzie. You spent the day by her side trying to make her laugh. When she’d get quiet you’d tuck in next to her and read. You found a great deal of comfort in being beside her and with the way she’d press a kiss to the top of your head or run her hand down your arm you felt she must feel the same.
That night, faceless men started following you in your sleep leaving you with the feeling that you were being watched. The phone rang sending you out of your bed and flying down the hallway. The ringing had stopped before you reached the phone at the bottom of the stairs. Moving into Tommy’s study you assumed he’d be giving Noah a hard time like he usually did. But it was silent. Your dad’s face was emotionless and cold as he looked up from his desk. He listened to whoever was on the other end of the phone.
“That won’t be necessary.” Swiftly he ended the call while putting out the cigarette dangling from his other hand.
“They are going to start closing in on us. No phone calls, no one in, and no one out of the house. You hear me?” His eyes were dark and for once you understood why people were so afraid of him. You froze on the spot your brain understanding what he was trying to say, but the rest of you only registered his tone. A wave of irrational panic started to shoot through you. He never talked to you that way ever.
“Do you hear me?” His words cut into you. “Don’t go calling Noah, just fucking forget him eh? For now. For both your sakes just fucking leave this alone.”
I fucked up. He blames me.
Memories of your late father's hand across your cheek became harder and harder to push down. Memories of the Priest at the orphanage with his hands around your neck flooded your mind.
Suddenly he got up from his seat and instead of running you decided to drop to the floor finally breaking eye contact. You tried to push him away as he picked you up and without a word he carried your shaking body upstairs. Your mind was racing in a hundred different directions accepting your fate, you squeezed your eyes shut. You heard a door open and then you were placed on a bed, but the sheets were wrong.
“What’s wrong with her.” Lizzie hissed and you felt her hands cradle your face.
“I may have shouted at her,” Tommy responded in an exasperated tone. He picked you up and placed you properly next to Lizzie.
“You shout at each other all the time?” She whispered, her cool fingers brushing the worry lines from your forehead. “Thomas,” She said in a tone that would wilt flowers.
“I’m fine.” You whisper. You felt the two of them get you under a blanket.
“Look, look at me.” He said softly. You shook your head, afraid to see that awful look in his eyes again. He said your name and Lizzie put her arm around you. You could tell by her sharp intake of breath that whatever she was about to say would be fatal. You opened your eyes and saw the version of him you were used to.
“Alfie and I don't have the best track record. He’s sold us out a few times, Eh? He works for the highest bidder. The last thing I want to see is you or the boy caught up in this. I don’t want either of you hurt. I know you will blame yourself for the rest of your life if something happens to him.”
Grace.
His words started to make sense, well, they always made sense. It was the way he said it that set you off. You nodded to show that you understood.  He kissed your forehead and you made an unsuccessful effort to not jump away. The hurt in his eyes and the way Lizzie tensed up caused you to tell the truth.
“It’s not you. My dad- the priest - I - “ You took a deep breath. “I figured I was in for a beating. Just caught me off guard. You're fine. Thank you for caring about Noah.”
“Care is a bit much-”
“Thomas,” Lizzie warned. He let out a sigh, something flashed in his face and you assumed it was wonder about how he ended up here.
“What? Look, no one is putting their hands on you, certainly not me. And if anyone does I’ll kill them myself.”
You nodded and were grateful that those words ended the evening. You held his hand until you felt like you could doze off. Lizzie had fallen asleep again and you moved her arm off of you gently before kissing Tommy good night.
You fell asleep the moment your head touched the pillow.
Waking up your heart sank at the thought of not seeing or speaking to Noah for an undermined about of time. Sadness quickly turned into rage at the thought of some of the girls in your class moving in on him in your absence. With a huff of defeat, you got up and stuffed your feet into your slippers. Opening the curtain you were met with a positively gorgeous sight. The forest was coated in a heavy blanket of white snow.
Everything was pushed from your head momentarily as you ran through the house to find your parents. Loud voices were drifting up from the stairs and suddenly you were met with the whole family stuffed into the entryway. Swearing and shouting at the kids and where people's things were, the chaos only added to your high spirits.
“What's going on?”
“Movin' in!” Arthur boomed pulling you into a hug. The maids floated passed you to help bring everyone's things in. You naturally moved to Tommy’s side.
“Dad! Did you see the snow!”
“It’s hard to miss.”
“Can we go for a walk today?” You wanted to spend time with him just to ensure everything was good between the two of you. John came close and pressed his shoulder against Tommy’s before he could answer.
“Whole pack of cars just pulled up to the gate,” John said in a hushed voice. “M’ assuming it's for her.” He nodded towards you with a small smile.
“Why would it be for her-” Tommy stopped suddenly. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Knowing that look could only mean it was Noah, you moved passed everyone to set out onto the front steps.
It looked like the King was coming though. A whole parade of black cars rolled up and started pouring in from the gate. Without better judgment, you kicked off your slippers and tore down the steps in nothing but your nightgown and wool jumper.
“No! -” Tommy shouted but you saw the third black car slow down and Noah got out and started towards you. Everything was pushed from your mind as you ran through the snow-covered drive.
___
She jumped up and he caught her in a large embrace, twirling her around, her laugh echoing. They said nothing as he picked her up and started to carry her the rest of the way back to the house.
“So romantic isn't it?” Esme said and Tommy resisted the urge to put a hole in the wall.
“Young love. Can’t be stopped can it?” Lizzie said appearing out of nowhere.
“She must have mentioned what's going on. Brought the whole fucking organization by the looks of it.” Esme responded. Lizzie looked over to Tommy, his posture made her quickly grab his arm to lean against him.
“Not sure how they’re going to get back to London in this weather,” Polly stated the obvious with a devious smile on her face.
Noah carried her all the way up the stairs placing her on the entryway carpet.
“What are you doing here!” She said breathlessly, her face pink.
“Bringing Apples.” He answered easily. Her face lit up as everyone watched in confusion. Whatever it was it meant a lot to her.
Apples? - better not be some kinky shit or ill skin him alive. Tommy thought bitterly as Alfie came into view.
“Morning,” Alfie said looking pleased with himself.  “Word on the street says the Shelbys are back under one roof.”
“Office,” Tommy said pulling Lizzie alongside him. Arthur and John watched Alfie closely as they all descended into the office.
__________
The office door closed and you looked back up at Noah still unbelieving that he was there. After carrying you all that way your flushed body was most certain of his close presence, but your mind was more stubborn. You thought maybe his dad would call if he heard anything. You didn't think he’d come all this way in a snowstorm. He kept you close and you were desperate to talk to him alone. A look that must have been obvious as Esme suddenly started herding you all into the Kitchens.
“Long journey like that requires a hot cuppa tea!”
The three of you sat at the table while the kids ran wildly through the house. She poured glasses of whiskey and hot tea before starting her interrogation.
“So all the way from London, that’s a long way for some tea.”
He chuckled and took a  sip of the whiskey before answering.
“It's excellent tea.” He smiled at you and your face turned hot. “I heard that things were getting a bit dangerous in these parts. Thought the least I could do is ask around and come to help out.” His stare was intense as you realized the full extent of what he meant. He brought everyone here to protect you.
“Interesting and what did you hear exactly?”
“The Changretta family was taking a special interest in the whereabouts of the family. They came to us, the day before some Irish lads told us that you were all moving back to watery lane. You called later on saying things were dangerous.”
“And all the lads?”
“Wasn’t sure what type of folks you had protecting the place. Figured more wouldn't be a problem.”
“And your Da’ what’s in it for him?”
“Ah, that I’m not quite sure of. I’d like to think that they did it because I asked. But he and Thomas always seem to have something going on between them.”
Esme nodded satisfied with her answers.
“So you brought men - “
“And guns.”
“Men and guns, but how are the two of you going to get back to London.”
“Figured we join in on the fun.” He shrugged. Esme let out a laugh.
________________________________
“I told you this wasn't necessary,” Tommy said in a tense voice.
“Eh, the boy wouldn't shut up. He’s miserable when he starts. Just like his mum was.” Alfie said looking around.
“Why help us?” Arthur asked with clenched fists.
“Well, things are a bit different these days, no?”
“Not different to us. Kids in love or not, we still have history, and this isn't a time to be doing business.” John said responding before Arthur could get them into trouble.
“Irish boys are out on the street saying that the Shelby clan are moving back to Watery lane. Changretta are chasing every lead they get for information about you lot. Gave me an offer to help finish you off.”
“And?” Tommy said cooly.
“And I told them I’d see it done. The real question is how are we going to get back at them if we are holed up in the house?”
“The snow -” John started.
“-Will give us time to plan, but we’ll need to be ready once the roads clear.”
“Again why help us?” Tommy asked.
“I have a business offer.” Tommy knew he wouldn't give more information with everyone in the room.
“You lot out.” He waved for everyone but Lizzie and Alfie to leave. Once the door was shut he waited for him to go on.
“Well, this gives me a couple opportunities. To spend time with your girl and also to ask about the passages you used to transport certain goods. I’ll assume you still know some people.”
“I’ll have it done,” Tommy said after a long moment.
“Thomas, I’m not sure I like where this is going. He’s a fucking mess without her.” Alfie said in a low tone.
“That makes two of us,” Tommy answered sternly.
“If I find out this is some big play to get back at me I’ll be sure you all pay a hefty price.”
“Trust me, this is the last thing I want her involved in."
The two men stared at each other for a long while.
“Look, we love our daughter, you love your son. For their sake let’s try to keep things as normal as possible. No business when they are around. Whether things work out or not let's just try to get along like parents would?” Lizzie was starting to feel another bout of morning sickness come on and was desperate to be back upstairs.
“Deal.” Alfie put his hand out and they shook on it.
______________________
Soon enough the Sitting room was packed. You were very amused at Alfie and Noah being thrown into the mix. You sat next to him and you both kept a close eye on Tommy and Alfie leaving to speak in private with the boys every time information came in.
“Do you want to go for a walk with me?” You asked desperate for some fresh air and space to talk freely about what he’d said to Esme.
“Not sure that’s the best idea. Don’t want you to catch a cold.” He looked around the room giving away his actual motive.
“Sit outside on the steps for a bit?” You bargained. Somehow you both managed to slip out unnoticed and went to sit on the steps at the back door. Lots of camps were set up with big fires and people making jokes and laughing.
“So you know about these Changretta folks?” You watched his face closely as he thought about his response.
“Not really my place, love.” He lit a cigarette and avoided your eyes.
“Please? No one will tell me anything.” He let out a sigh and you leaned against his side, he wrapped his arm around you.
“They are an Italian family. Apparently, John killed off a guy for dating Lizzie a while back. Things went back and forth before they had their hands full with other things. Now Luca has come back to avenge his family by taking yours out.”
“And you are involved because of me?” You said weakly.
“Dad’s been trying to expand business in New York for a while now, plus he wants something from Tommy.” His eyes told you it was something else. “Even without that stuff, we’d be here. Not going to leave you alone when I know I can help.” You leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips. Enjoying the smell of cigarette smoke and the warmth of his hand on your cheek.
“Wait - John killed someone for dating Lizzie? What - wait what do you know about my family?”
“Erm- A fair bit, I suppose.” A dark feeling made itself present in the pit of your stomach. You mentally slapped yourself for not asking these types of questions sooner.  You looked at him sprawled on the top stair smoking his cigarette. Revisiting Tommy’s words from the night before about how Alfie had sold them out.
What if you’d just brought the enemy into the house? What if that’s why he’s with you.
“Our families are more friends than they are enemies. I’m not interested in business, your dad worked hard to get his life cleaned up. I respect him for not wanting you to fall into all this.”
“Does that mean you’d leave it behind?” He leaned in closer to you and you suddenly wanted more than anything to kiss him again.
“In a heartbeat.” He kissed your forehead before helping you up.
___________________________________
Tommy sat at the table, a task that was already challenging with his family. Alfie and Noah were an interesting addition. He would never admit it but having them here wasn't as horrible as he thought it would be. Alfie was well-behaved, and for the first time, Tommy got the feeling that perhaps the two of them were getting old.
Most of the dinner was spent harassing the two teens. Noah took on the worst of it.
“Your dad is a right savage. He ever tell you about the time with the Russians? Savage.”
“Alfie,” Tommy warned.
“You should have seen them the whole lot of them acting like animals. We stole -”
“Alfie.” He said more sternly.
“Fine, but what about the time with the bear in the pub - that’s a right classic.”
“Bear in the pub?” Lizzie asked as Tommy finished the last of his drink.
“Nother time I suppose.” He scratched his beard. “Well, what about you love, what are you planning to do after school.”
“I erm - well I was thinking of pursuing accounting. Always jobs for that and I’m good with numbers. I haven't thought about it much.”
“Numbers, I like that. Smart girl, people like us always need clever accountants. Very sharp.”  Alfie said cheerfully and Tommy hated how she was eating up his approval.
“If you were to be married -”
“Alfie” Tommy growled earning a laugh from Esme. Arthur looked positively distraught over the concept, reaching for the whisky bottle.
“We can save that for later I suppose. Hmmm well, there was how we first met - do you remember darling?” He looked over at Tommy and it wasn't unnoticed how annoyed he was.
“What if we don't tell stories tonight, eh?” Tommy suggested tensely. Alfie thought about it for a moment before turning to Polly.
“Are you really a gypsy queen? Does that make you sort of famous amongst your people?” He started again and Tommy was suddenly worried that they would run out of whiskey if the snow was actually going to stick for a full week. Esme seemed to find the whole thing hilarious often indulging him with stories and jokes. Tommy was grateful for her ability to keep things civil. Eventually, Arthur was looking slightly pickled and it was well past eleven.
He locked eyes with Polly and she asked a silent question.
Should we keep drinking, or go to bed?
Everyone hated the dining room, this was probably the most time they’d managed to spend in it,  but moving to the kitchen was more a family-only type thing. Looking over to Lizzie answered the question well enough. She looked beautiful but exhausted.
“Bout time for bed eh?” Polly announced.
“Guess so. Help me with the stables?” Arthur asked you and you nodded looking slightly surprised. Which meant something was most certainly going on. There was no reason to help with the stables.
“Francis, can you show everyone to their rooms?” Tommy asked easily.
“Of course.” She answered.
Tommy watched as you gave Noah a hug, he whispered something in your ear that made you smile. Then you moved into the entryway to pull your boots on.
“Night.” Tommy nodded at Alfie.
“Night” He nodded back.
After helping Lizzie up to the room he went out the stables to see what the commotion was about. He followed the dark path to the stables.
“No way. No absolutely no. How? I just - you and Lizzie. Does Esme know?!” Your voice called out as he approached the door.
“Well, I’m sure it's been mentioned but let's not bring up the past eh?” John responded looking slightly pale. Tommy leaned against the doorway watching his two brothers attempt to lecture you. John sitting on a bucket as Arthur paced in front of you. You saw him standing there but decided to keep quiet.
“Anyway the point is. Lots of stuff between us and the Solomons eh.” Arthur started
“Can’t trust em” John added
“And trust me. I know exactly what you're thinking. Oooh he’s so handsome and he smokes cigarettes and his hair's all swoopy and he’s got nice muscles. He’s all mysterious and dangerous. Swoon, maybe I could change him.”
“You can't,” John said nodding.
“Absolutely can’t change him.” Arthur continued. “Now he’s here because he’s done business with Tommy. Once he’s gotten what he wants and this mess is cleaned up. He’s going to be on to the next lass.”
“You’ll be devastated.”
“So don't even think about sleeping with him. He’s probably fuck-” Tommy watched your face pinch up similar to the way it had before you fell to the floor the night before.
“That’s enough Arthur.” Tommy interrupted sharply. “I think she understands.”
You nodded hiding away the hurt in your eyes.
“How many random people have you guys killed?” You asked.
“I don’t know about random…” John mumbled
“Are we including the war?” Arthur asked. Tommy thought about the past and wondered if what you’d seen in your life would make you understanding of the choices he’d made.
“Okay so let me get this straight. Lizzie was a wh-prostitute, sleeping with Tommy then John wanted to marry her - but you ruined it - Gace - the Grace was gone, then back, then passed, and then you started sleeping with Lizzie again as her boss - and then you married her when she got pregnant - then got me when Ruby passed?”
“More or less” Tommy shrugged, seemed a bit over the top when it's all laid out like that.
“Wait till she hears about Gretta,” Arthur said quietly.
“And all the others in between-” John added before stopping himself.
“Do you love her?” Your voice was steady, and he knew you well enough to know you were gearing up for a fight.
“Yes.” He answered seriously.
“Promise?”
“Got you so she’d stay.” He wasn't sure if it was the right thing to say. “Ruby brought us together, but I think it was meant to be from the start.”
You nodded thinking for a moment.
“Do you think Alfie is here to kill us in our sleep?”
“No, I think Alfie’s here because he wants a piece of  New York and wants Changretta out of the way.”
“Do you think Noah’s with me to ruin the family?”
“No. Alfie wouldn't send his son to his dirty work. I’m not sure of his intentions, but I don’t think they are related to the business.”
“So you think he likes me for me?”
“I think teenage boys are awful and cruel. For his sake, he better like you for you. Or we’ll handle it.”
“Either way you won't leave me?” Your eyes narrowed and he could tell it was difficult for you to get the words out.
“Never.”
“No matter how bad I fuck up?”
“Never.” He repeated. “That being said you can sleep in with Lizzie tonight.”
“Was going to sleep with Pol.”
“No.” He answered easily.
“Alright.” You said without fuss surprising him.
“Now is there anything else you both left out?” He looked and John and Arthur.
“Well, we could be out here all night-”
“Let’s not and say we did, eh?
They all piled back into the house and you followed Tommy up the stairs before going back to your room to change.

After getting ready in your bathroom you noticed that your bedding had already been moved. You slowly made your way to your parent's room down the hall. Getting close to the door you heard them talking.
“Well, how would you know what she thinks of me now?” Lizzie snapped. You decided to make your way in there to break up whatever they were arguing about.
“Probably no different than she’s always thought of you.” He mumbled as you came into the room.
Lizzie gave you a strange look and suddenly you thought back to how Arthur had spoken about her past. You stepped over your cot at the foot of the bed to climb up in between them.
You placed yourself against her side and enjoyed the way she embraced you.
“Are you frightened again?” She whispered, running her hands through your hair.
“No - well I’m not sure. I want to think Noah’s here for the right reasons.”
“I think he is darling. Try not to stress over it.”She placed a kiss on your head and you felt better knowing what she thought.
You considered going back to the floor but to put Tommy at ease you stayed between them dozing off.

Tommy & Ada parallels
Tumblr media
Political inclination
Tommy was known to be communist/socialist before the war, dreaming about changing the world. After Grace, he eventually decides to pursue politics.
Ada also shared communist ideologies and is active to an extent with Freddie. When Tommy became MP, she naturally became his political advisor. In the finale, Tommy reiterates the fact that she was born for politics in her family.
Fine things in life
Tommy liked to possess lavish and fine things. His suits for example, In s1, we see how he gets his suits done from the same place as Kimber. In s4, we hear how he gets his suits done by a tailor in London. Similarly he admired Tatiana’s luxurious car in s3 just like the look of awe he gave May’s mansion. Arrow house was decorated with the finest things - paintings, interiors, furniture and his bedroom with Grace too.
Ada’s house in s2 said it all. The interior, the furniture everything was expensive and grand. This aspect of her personality is reiterated in s5, by showing the luxurious redecoration and also her art pieces, vases etc (when finn was too scared to ruin it with his blood)
Love & Marraige
Both married the love of their life inspite of opposition from family. Ada married Freddie even though Tommy and her brothers were against a communist. Tommy married Grace even when Polly was against her.
Tumblr media
Both their children were born out of wedlock. When Ada got pregnant there was ambiguity about Freddie’s intentions for her. Just when Ada lost hope and decides to be practical and abort, they have a dramatic reunion at the train station. Their love for each other is validated and they look forward to have their child. Similarly Grace got pregnant with Tommy’s child, there is ambiguity about her intentions and it seems they will go their separate ways again. Just when Tommy seems to have accepted that she will sail away and decides to be practical and be with May, they have a dramatic reunion at the Derby. Their love and longing for each other is re-validated and they look forward to have a life together.

Both lose the love of their life. Tommy takes it way worse because of his already existing war trauma. Ada is normal and emotionally stable so she carries on without getting sucked into addictions, depression and hallucinations whereas we all know how Tommy suffered after Grace.
Both end up being widowers and single parents

Companionship
They never looked for love again. Companions yes but not another love.
We see Ada interested in the Russian spy in s3 and later we see her with Ben Younger. There may be other men whom she saw which we don’t see onscreen. Tommy, we all know went from women to women. Prostitutes, aristocrats, communist, secretary, dead wife’s ghost, ex girlfriend’s ghost, you name it!!!
Ben Younger was Ada’s constant and the longest one we see with her. They seem to share a stable relationship like two “mutually consenting normal people” who respect each other, can share. Lizzie is a constant go-to for Tommy but they share an unequal dynamic where she has been hopelessly in love with him from beginning while he saw her as no strings attached buddy and had other priorities and is done with love after Grace. Thats why that relationship is chaotic and toxic but also convenient and practical for both.

Interestingly they also have a child out of wedlock with their companions. The difference is Tommy had to marry Lizzie as a man who took responsibility of his child. Whereas Ada mentions she wasn’t planning to marry Ben, it’s seen as a bold move.
Ada and Ben’s relationship confirms what Grace fan always knew unlike a certain section of the fandom . Just because a partner is decent and good and you like them does not automatically mean you fell in love. Ada explains in a s5 scene after she hears of Ben’s demise “I didn’t love him. But I liked him. He was decent and good….I wasn’t going to marry him. God he didn’t deserve us”. This is exactly how Tommy and Lizzie were designed too. Due to Tommy’s trauma and unequal feelings for Lizzie, their relationship is more toxic in nature than Ada and Ben’s. But at the core it was companionship. Two people having a convenient partnership that serves both. Tommy also found Lizzie to be decent and good compared to him. She took care of his children and was loyal to him and his family. She didn’t deserve him. He didn’t love her either but liked her. He felt sorry for her as she had to bear the ultimate pain of losing a child.
There is so much more I wanted to cover about their bond. But this post will be too long. So will do a separate post.
