Its so upsetting that side photoshoots & blooper videos & literal fucking ads have turned in2 "main content". That if anyone tries to claim Thomas & his crew have not posted shit, the team's response is "hey! We did do sanders sides content! You know, that ad where we talk about our merch/patreon/etc?" Like some sort of "got you".
When you create something, the main content is the thing you created. For example, 'The Good Place' is a show with 4 seasons; each episode is the content. When the NBC released bloopers for each seasons, while that is content, that is not main content for the series. It is additional content. It is unnecessary fun that is unrelated to the original series, because... it doesn't add anything. Bloopers do not add to the story or plot. A lot of times this content doesn't need to exist, but it is fun if it does!
Additional content comes with the main content. We have the series and then fun side things. We should not be counting this content as Thomas & his crew "doing something Sanders Sides related, so you can't say he hasn't done anything."
The thing is, though, we have started to count additional & unnecessary content as main content because we have not fucking gotten a main Sanders Sides episode in almost 3 years (it will be 3 years in May). Bloopers and Tik toks and photos are supposed to come WITH or AFTER the literal content of the series, but all we have been getting is that type of content for THREE YEARS.
If I walk into a Hot Topic and see Monster High Merch, that's not fucking content for the Monster High series. When your favourite Youtuber posts a photo of themself on Instagram that is not their content. If an artist posts WIP drawings to their Twitter that isn't their content. If I am listening to a podcast and at the end of the podcast they give an ad for merch, thats NOT THE CONTENT. THE CONTENT IS THE PODCAST, NOT THE FUCKING ADS? For the love of god, I feel like I am losing my mind.

Tangentially related to the current topic, with asides and TSS, I think Thomas and crew have fallen into the trap I've seen a few infamous kickstarters fall into.
A promised product (in this case the videos) gets popular, and the creator thinks that they have to make the product bigger and better and more impressive to please the people, and thus takes longer and longer to make. And then it's never good enough for the hype, and the creator forgot that people wanted the original promised product, that that was good enough and doesn't have to be so big. That the original product was what got people invested, not this big impressive thing they've decided they must make forever.
I'd say I hope Thomas realizes this and breaks from it, but he's claimed he's learned before and nothing changed. All I can say now is I hope his other projects don't fall into this trap, too.
yeah i think this same thing.
i’ve said before it’s like a vicious cycle where bigger productions require more time, which means longer waits, which require bigger productions to make up for them and to keep the audience’s attention, which require more time and so on. the photoshoots are also a good example of this like. just look at the skirt photos in chronological order.
we’ve told thomas many times that we’re alright with simple videos even if they take longer so thomas can take breaks. and he seems to understand this but then get trapped again. first he said they would make the Asides and he didn’t promise that they would be smaller but that they should come quicker and be irrelevant to the main plot, so he seemed to be aware that the series needs more lighthearted simple episodes. but then they forgot and got ambitious again. and then he did say after the last video, the one for the plushies, that it was fun making that simple thing and he will consider doing it more often. which like okay. good. good that you realize this for the third or fourth time? hope this time it actually helps break the cycle.
and again this is mostly because i’m worried about him! i want him to not feel pressured to do these huge things because he thinks they’re necessary to keep our attention! i like the small videos too! the casualness and apparent effortlessness was essential to building the original Sanders Sides fandom. as long as he’s having fun.

Okay I have thoughts and idk where else to put them so here they go on this hellsite.
Hi! I'm a huge fan of Thomas Sanders and have been with Sander Sides since the first video. And I have to say I am becoming extremely disappointed with Thomas's content, specifically Sander Sides in general.
Now you might be thinking, Em, it's Thomas's content, he can make whatever he wants without your input. And I would say, you're right! Thomas can do whatever he wants.
But we all know that Sander Sides is his big thing. His claim to youtube fame and what have you. The fact that the video that came out today was an AD, for something that we already knew about because of Twitter and Instagram, puts a very sour taste in my mouth.
He didn't need to film a Sander Sides video for this.
He could have easily posted a series of photos on Instagram of the Sides posing with their plushies. But he decides to drop a suprise premier on us, not give us a title, and hype us all up because he knows we are all waiting on the season finale. It may not have been his intent, because Thomas isn't that kind of malicious creator, but that is what it read like to me.
The last time we got a Sander Sides CANON video (not a sanders aside because Thomas has stated that those aren't plot relevant) was 2 years ago with Putting Others First.
And okay, you could argue that Working through Intrusive Thoughts was super plot relevant even though it was a Sanders Aside. That was 1 year ago.
I understand that it takes a while to get content filmed. But if it's going to take you 2 or 3 years for the next Canon Sander Sides video to post, tell us. Give us a heads up that there going to be a little hiatus of Sander Sides content. Don't dangle a treat in front of us, and never let us have it.
Not to mention that everything monetary that Thomas puts out is super expensive. I'm an adult who works full time and I still can't afford an $85 Christmas sweater, let alone a $30+ plushie. Even the Patreon bugs me a little bit, but I can do a whole other post on that.
I just wish Thomas would communicate with us a bit more frequently about Sander Sides. It's why he has such a big following. I'm happy that he is pursuing other ventures, like Roleslaying with Roman, getting back into creating music, and the photoshoots he's been doing. But he has to realize that the more he puts off Sander Sides, the more fans he loses.
I have watched so many of my favorite fanaritsts and fic writers say that they won't post anymore Sander Sides content because of this drought that we are in.
This post is not to bash Thomas in anyway. I think he is a wonderful person and is a light that we need in these dark times. Hell, hes one of the reasons I actually had the guts to come out. I just wish that the Sides would be more of a priority for him, because to me, as a fan of his, it seems like he's dropping the ball.
I miss this Fandom. I miss what it was.
I miss the boys so much. And I'm getting tired of waiting year after year for them. They have gotten me through some dark times, especially the love of my life Logan.
I'm just tired. And it makes me sad that I am starting to get tired of waiting.
TL;DR: I'm frustrated with the space of time between Sander Sides videos, and the fact that the most recent one we got was an AD for products we already knew about.

Basically, nobody is happy about Thomas’ latest uploads of Sanders Sides. Because none of it at all relates to the season finale. He’s posted snippets of himself relaxing after an “8 hour script writing session” and we have yet to see any other updates. Today, he posted on his twitter that he’s finished with the script for part 3. So, progress is being made, but at a snails pace. So, understandably, the fan base is getting a bit agitated.
insane. absolutely batshit that ive been gone from this fandom for like what. i left around early 2020??? girl its been almost 3 and a half years and youre telling me the only thing ive missed are ads and photoshoots…..

“Roleslaying With They-Have-The-Same-Name-It’s-A-Coincidence-I-Swear” honestly, I think that was original title for this 💀
Thank you anon, for allowing me to properly express my frustration for this series.
My problem is not with the series itself. The series is nice and enjoyable and it looks like there is a plot already planned, which makes me hope we won't see too many questionable things. Also, I know almost nothing of D&D/roleplay, so it's very interesting to see how it works. I want to see what Thomas & Terrence will do and what will happen the more the story goes on.
What frustrates me can be summarized in two points:
1) Thomas is still writing Sanders Sides, so every other work means hours he could've used to plan his main series instead
2) Thomas lied about this series
I would like to focus on the second point, because I can't fully decide if Thomas has been very naive, plain stupid or if he just hoped people have a short-term memory. Unfortunately for him, my memory works very well regarding stuff I like and if you people don't remember what happened, please allow me to refresh your memory too.
The video is "What is coming Up, Everybody", the date is October 9th 2021: Thomas is giving us some information about what’s in store for us. He tells us the next official episode they’re working on is the season finale (so I suppose the plushie episode is just a figment of my imagination), he’s telling us about skits with the Sides and then, he says something interesting: “pretty soon we are gonna be introducing a new series”. Roman is excited and Thomas replies with these words:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Oh yeah, Roman, a little birdie told me that you, specifically you, are gonna love it."
You don't need a master’s degree to connect the dots. The way he says “specifically you”, the smiles and the tone of his voice all send the same message: something is coming and Roman will be involved.
We have another confirmation, when we finally see the first trailer of the new series: we don’t see it at the end of a random video, but at the end of a Sanders Sides video (the five years anniversary special). And in this trailer, we see our protagonist for the first time: he's a guy with brown hair, dressed in white and red, accompanied by a guy dressed in black and purple.
Thomas Sanders is a theater man. He knows the importance of color schemes and he definitely knows the color schemes he himself used for his series. He knows dark blue+black are for Logan, white+red are for Roman, light blue+brown are for Patton and so on. He knows these colors refer to these characters and uses them every time he impersonates said characters.
You don't believe me? Look at the photoshoots: Thomas might change clothes, but the color schemes stay the same. Janus is black and yellow, Remus is black and green, Virgil is black and purple. They are the Sides' colors and he perfectly knows it.
So we have a new series, presented at the end of a Sanders Sides video, with two main characters who have Roman and Virgil's color schemes. Is it really so impossible to connect them to Sanders Sides?
And even if you might've had a doubt, the series' name is "Roleslaying with Roman". Roman. I really doubt anyone on planet Earth would think “ah yes, this is completely unrelated to Sanders Sides”.
So we watch the episode, expecting references to Sanders Sides because literally everything told us it would be related to that series. But when the episode starts, we have a disclaimer that says: actually no, this guy isn't Roman from Sanders Sides. This guy, who has been presented for the first time in a Sanders Sides video, who has the same color scheme as Roman, who has the same name as Roman, who has a series whose name refers to Roman, is not Roman. Is a random character who coincidentally is called Roman just like the one from Sanders Sides.
Sigh.
Come on, Sanders. What am I, ten? You know I can still watch old videos and connect the dots, right? You know people have more than two neurons, right?
Honestly, I don't know what happened behind the scenes. It is quite clear that, when Thomas made the What is Coming Up Everybody video, this new series was supposed to be about Roman from Sanders Sides.
Then... who knows? Maybe Thomas & crew developed a plot+backstory for the character and realized it couldn’t work with Sanders Sides!Roman. It needed a brand new character. But the series was already called "Roleslaying with Roman", so they had to name the new character Roman as well.
That would explain why the plans changed but the guy kept being so similar to Roman and why, at the beginning of the new series, Thomas had to clarify he was a different guy.
If that's true, then I have even more questions, because I cannot figure out when they realized it. I mean:
The new series has been hinted on October 9th
The first trailer comes out on November 14th
The complete trailer comes out on November 23rd
The first episode comes out on November 27th
Since Thomas presented the series and made the trailers with all the possible references to Sanders Sides, he should've realized this character had to be different just before the first episode dropped. So he thought he was the same Roman from Sanders Sides... until a couple days before?
But it doesn't make sense, because he had to film+edit the video as well, right? And there are no references to Sanders Sides or Roman anywhere. So he should've known already when he made the video. So he definitely knew before November 23rd.
But then it makes even less sense, because if he knew, then why didn't he say anything before the episode dropped? Why did he remain silent? Why didn't he change anything like, you know, the character's name? Since this guy isn't Roman anymore, Thomas could've chosen another name - it's not like there aren't enough names in the world. And if he needed the same "sounds", some names are very similar to Roman, like Roland, Richard or Robert. Personally, I would've liked Roland a lot: "Roleslaying with Roland" sounds even better imho.
Or, if Thomas really really wanted to keep that name, he could've warned us way before the actual episode. Two measly lines on Twitter would've been enough. Even something like: "Hey guys, change of plan: the series will not be about Roman from Sanders Sides. I hope you will still enjoy and watch it". I think people would've watched the series anyway, even just out of curiosity.
But, honestly, I don't think Thomas & crew are so naive and disorganized, to realize the new series they're making isn't related to Sanders Sides. On the contrary, I think Thomas knew and he purposely didn't do anything to warn people before the actual start of the series.
Why? Money, of course. Thomas isn't stupid: he knows Sanders Sides is the main reason why people follow him. He knows that, if people believe Roleslaying is connected to Sanders Sides, they will watch it. And so, when he realized he couldn't connect them, he kept Roman's name as bait, to convince people to watch Roleslaying. Simple as that and way more plausible than not realizing the thing you're working on is different from another series.
This baffles me, because it's both a very clever and a very stupid move. It's clever, because he's using his best show to introduce a new one. And it's stupid, because his public isn't made of adoring kids with no memory, who happily accept everything he says.
And I think he knows. He must know. I refuse to believe he's so stupid and naive to think people would just shrug and ignore everything he said without saying a word.
Maybe he just underestimated his fans. I don't know. What I do know is that I would've appreciated a simpler, honest approach, instead of trying to bait me with false promises.

I dont luke when people ar elike "Thomas doesnt owe us anything" because,, he has a patreon, people are paying him because the promise of content
I had patreon for months, and I didnt get anything out of it, cause he didnt really post anything to have anything to put there..? unless you count backstage things about like, phtotoshoots ?
"you can have access to sanders sides scripts!" Ok then write sanders sides
,
(This is not counting the livestreams)
Also this is totally just me being bitter
the patreon blows my mind a little. cos. it’s supposed to give people more content, but it’s dependent on the content non-patrons get, which thomas doesn’t make, but then thomas tries to defend it by being like “id like to think the patrons are supporting everything we wanna make” but nothing is actually being made other than ads and photoshoot BTS or some shit, so is he saying “id hope that the patrons WANT random photoshoot bts and scripts for videos we don’t make for years at a time and ad free videos that we don’t make for years at a time” girl WHAT
literally all i got out of the patreon was the fuckin. bts for photoshoots, directors commentary (which i did enjoy), scripts for like. i wanna say three or four videos? you can’t even access scripts from videos before… dwit? i think? idk i haven’t been a patron since like august or september, uhhhh extra photos from photoshoots, and i can’t think of anything else. oh, and the livestreams i never watched skdjdjfj
like. the patreon was a good idea for about four and a half seconds. then when implemented became a clusterfuck
sigh

I don’t think he “doesn’t want to make Sander Sides anymore” otherwise he wouldn’t have done the constant photoshoots with them, start the Sander Asides series, or talk about it with so much love. As for the Roman of Reston not being Roman…you’re telling me you have never made an OC based on an established character that you love?
To be honest I’m just jaded toward Thomas at this point (reasonably) so a lot of the stuff I say about him that’s negative like that stuff you mentioned is due to that. I know he probably genuinely loves the series but it’s really hard for me to see it that way anymore.

The biggest reason I decided to go the route of gathering up the Sides’ photoshoot outfits was because every time I went to the Sanders Sides wiki, it would only have a section on their shape-shifting but nothing on their changing wardrobe. Which is fine if I wanted to incorporate, say, Puppet! Virgil’s heterochromia. But it does nothin if I were to try finding what Remus’s eyeball shorts look like.
And I don’t know enough about how to edit a wiki page (let alone how to create a new page) to include anything along those lines, also assuming that the wiki takes anything that’s still created by Thomas but not strictly a Sanders Sides episode.
