Sure you technically ranked under him in terms of status in the Cloud Knights. Sure he already had a very capable adult looking after him already. And sure the kid knew how to defend himself perfectly well on his own. But you just couldn’t help it. The moment you saw Yanqing, it was like being reunited with a long lost child. In fact it didn’t take you long at all to go to the General and ask about Yanqing’s home environment and living situation, to which the General replied to all your questions in that calm, lazy way he does, with a growing amusement in his voice as he realizes Yanqing has found yet another person who wanted to adopt him. The General politely reminds you that Yanqing is very capable, and he’s got him looking out for the boy, so there was really no reason to worry. But this can’t dissuade you. He’s your boy, it’s your JOB to protect him. To add fuel to the fire in a way, Jing Yuan amuses himself by assigning you under Yanqing, so the two of you will have more time together. Yanqing doesn’t really know how to feel about you constantly hovering over him, checking him for wounds after a fight, asking if he’s been eating okay and feeling well… I mean. It’s not like you’re his parent. I can see him eventually getting frustrated and raising his voice at you, but he will eventually apologize, and grow to appreciate you. After all, Jing Yuan doesn’t buy food for him, but you sure will. He just needs to learn to see the benefits of having yet another parental figure in his life. Yanqing is a sweet kid though. It does get to the point where he comes to you and Jing Yuan first to show you a new sword he bought or tell you about a criminal he captured. It’s cute to see him so excited about something. You’re eventually allowed to pat his head. He doesn’t mind it once he’s comfortable enough around you, even if he doesn’t like being treated like the child he is. All in all he’s just a great choice to adopt, and he’ll learn to accept you as a parental figure. Be patient.
