Day 410

As I prepare to script Cael’s intro (because I realized yesterday that I should start that soon), I realized that this must be what it’s like to write something with the purpose of it being used. In the past, it’s been really hard to imagine the act of outlining or even drafting one’s work. There is this constant joke among writers that the characters often hijack the story, and everyone knows how overwhelming it can be to even think about editing your first draft.

However, I am writing with the purpose of that piece eventually becoming a script, which will then be used in a webcomic, and that has forced me to be more mindful of how I write. For simplicity's sake (and because it’s tradition in comics) the primary story is broken up into smaller stories that make up this much larger story.

While we technically don’t need to, because Chimera Academy isn’t being posted by chapters, but rather by pages like webcomics had been since the early days of the internet. However, it’s much easier for both me and @wereah, to work like this. This allows me to write and script the story in chunks, this way Were-Ah always has something to work with. Hence, the reason why I have to work on Cael’s intro soon, because she’s right now working on Thea’s intro.

But it also allows us to edit on the fly. While the primary idea of all my intros so far has survived, it’s the little details and dialogue that end up changing. Most of the time, it’s the result of what happens when you turn something into a comic. Dialogue might need to be removed or even added for the clarity of the reader. Something I had imagined when I wrote the script, might be better served with a different art direction, or while in the middle of making the page, a question may be thrown back to me as the writer, what is the best way to convey something.

In this way, my works never stay completely the same from the first time I’ve conceived it to the point it is being drawn. And that is perfectly fine, but it’s also been fascinating to take part in this process.
