Batman loses all likeability when you remember Arkham exists. Have you seen Arkham!? The damn place is a run down sanitarium or something! It's clearly never been renovated since the early 1900s! And yet it still stands! We're sending a bunch of mentally ill people to a place that looks specifically designed to torture them. The only batman who has my respect in this regard is the telltale games one. I'm pretty sure those games had (or had the option to have) arkham get replaced by an actual functioning mental health facility.

Cause let's be honest. You keep sending people like Two-Face, Riddler, Mad Hatter, Harley Quinn, Mister Freeze, etc to a place that looks like a 1800s facility where they'd try to beat the abnormality out of you, and then you're shocked when they don't get better! No duh, idiot! Or is the stupid rich man fine with gotham having a non-existent mental health system!? Screw you Batman. Screw you!

My favorite is definitely Jervis. Which is funny, because in just about every version he's my least favorite of the three. His design is just so fun and goofy and him. It's amazing. They all are.

Design Notes — Riddler | Scarecrow | Hatter

I drafted up some rogue designs last year, actually. They’ve mostly evolved from those. Content warning for horrific old art.

The McGriddler — Ah, a grown man with the strength of a baby! I’ve actually had this… horrendous peacock concept in my brain since 2022, back when my Riddler design was a dirty blonde/brunette. I hated him. He had the costume, but not the flair. Not to mention the generic facial structure.

Luckily, New Riddler is now an ostentatiously dressed vain attention whore! Highly fashionable, extensive wardrobe (def designing more outfits for him) and a possible mid-life crisis arc where he just wears a bathrobe and wifebeater for a month straight.

And listen, I’m not much of a writer, but there are notes on his personality.

Not great ones, though.

And rather than his ambiguous forensics/science job, he now works in I.T. Or rather, worked in I.T. (fired for patronising tech support customers)

For Jon — He’s always had black eyes with orange ringed pupils (initially blue) from the fear toxins. Drafted him up in high school because I was coping.

I’ve always intended to give him multiple costume designs. With narrative purposes. He redesigns himself. Ofc he couldn’t be satisfied with one thing, no, he has winter, summer, Witch Doctor, stealth etc. costumes on the way.

The initial design was trying to do too much — Patches, stitches, belt straps, arm warmers, utility belts, boots. Clutter. (Does NOT help that I can hardly decipher my old sketches.)

So, we just remove the overtly slutty components from the main design—

—And put them in a seperate campier Scarecrow design that I use as a Halloween-sona.

Silly Crazy Zonka Wonka — I think I was looking at pics of the Depp Hatter for the old design, which. May explain some things.

Acute observation! They look nothing alike. So I’ve kept absolutely nothing from the initial design except for the choppy wavy hairstyle.

Completely different colour scheme. Subbed out the TF2 Ghastly Gibus for the Towering Pillar of Hats. (Because ofc The Hatter would have something from the funny Hat FPS, no?) Shorter. Feebler. Every sickness on the planet. Congratulations! Mercury poisoning.

The initial concept for the redesign was to have a sort of reversible coat with his Arkham outfit on one side, and Rogue outfit on the other. You can see I just opted for him to wear a combination of both.

Despite surviving the grievous head injury that Alice had given her, Jervis' brain was in a whole lot worse shape afterward. Not only did it worsen preexisting issues, but it gave her new ones, such as muscle weakness, balance issues, chronic migraines, weakened vision in her right eye, and some slight difficulties with speech. Some of these have gotten a bit better in the time since, but there's one that still affects her majorly: her memory loss.

Jervis tends to forget things often and easily. He'll ask the same questions over and over again, or wander off and get lost, or blank on people's names despite knowing them for years (which is a small part of why he gives everyone Alice-In-Wonderland themed nicknames).

For the most part she isn't very bothered about this; she's usually a million miles away from earth anyway. There's just one major problem about her memory loss.

She can't remember what her Alice looked like. Which makes it hard for her to find a replacement.

When the villians are more sympathetic than the hero, you've failed. They should be at least equally sympathetic. For example: let's look at Spiderman. Despite me not liking Steve Ditko's Spiderman, I've seen Spiderman tv shows and movies and games. And you know what? I like the villians (I like Doctor Octopus, Mysterio and the rest), but Spiderman is a sympathetic character. His school life, his family life, he's relatable. So you can root for both him and enjoy the villians.

Not the case with batman. With possibly two main exceptions (Adam West's Batman and Batman: The Brave and The Bold), Batman puts me to sleep. His villians are compelling. Batman beats up the mentally ill for a living, and we call him a hero. What have Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face and The Mad Hatter all have in common? Oh, yeah. Clear signs of mental illness!

And don't tell me batman can't fix this! Arkham could be replaced with a functional care facility, but batman doesn't want to fix it. I honestly think he gets some sick pleasure from beating up the mentally ill. I really do think that. And that's why I want batman dead. I would not trust him if he were a real person and I don't trust him as a fictional character.

PS: Also, Stan Lee gave marvel a better "voice" than DC. DC is boring and hard to want to read. Marvel feels fun, bombastic and exciting! DC just shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. Their characters back in the 50s and 60s mostly feel like cardboard cutouts to me. Not the case at marvel.
