fascinating, how, at the beginning of s2, lord beelzebub shows up and offers crowley forgiveness for his treason, and a hefty promotion, in exchange for gabriel.

but gabriel is in aziraphale’s bookshop, and if hell got ahold of gabriel, heaven would immediately look to aziraphale as the offender.

so despite how much crowley hates gabriel for what he did to aziraphale, and how dire the punishment is for harbouring gabriel, crowley doesn’t do as hell bids, because his love for aziraphale is far greater than his hatred for those who have hurt his angel, and greater than the horror of being erased from the book of life. instead he immediately thinks of aziraphale — “aziraphale, what have you done.”

but when the metatron offers aziraphale power and promotion, aziraphale agrees.

crowley views great power as inherently corrupt. aziraphale believes he can use great power to change the world, to change heaven, for the better — for crowley.

so when aziraphale says to crowley, “i forgive you,” he’s letting him go, because his desire to see crowley happy is stronger than anything else, just as crowley’s desire to see aziraphale safe is paramount, no matter the cost.

if you love him, let him go.

they’re saying the same words, but they’re speaking different languages.

we talk about the marauders as a doomed narrative a lot but i’d like to raise the idea of it as a haunted one. or specifically a story littered with characters who did not die when they were supposed to. lily is the most prominent example of this: the Woman In The Margins, but often a ghost as well. she is discussed in terms of her robbed potential, appears in mirrors and apparitions, and the physical imprint of her love on harry influences a narrative that she is no longer part of. it is difficult to characterize her because we are given so little, but it’s also a strength that she is Defined By Absence. insane, but that’s why her strongest foil might be barty crouch jr: a character who wrongfully lived past the “end” of his story, and never technically died at all! lily is not present in the story, yet exerts narrative influence & asserts her absence. conversely, barty crouch is a Walking Plot Device, who is only ever relevant as long as he is present. his characterization is confusing, because he only has whatever traits might further the plot: sometimes a genuine teacher, or an evil prodigy, or “insane” or w/e. yet he gets a whole book of Presence! barty doesn’t even die: he receives the dementor’s kiss offstage. even the text does not give him a true “ending”, unlike lily, who continually experiences endings even after her death— revived by the text to shout her last words over and over on the page.

How to (Not) Choose a Rival

I could do the meta thing and talk about how Yuri died and be serious about something... or I could talk about how he lived LIKE A DRAMATIC MOTHER FUCKER (derogatory (lovingly)). Also Barnaby... the pretty men aren't safe here.

Yuri really thought he had handpicked his rival, narrative foil, archnemesis, the works.

He purposefully sought Barnaby out in the Beginning, telling him that he couldn't wait to see what his sense of justice was. Barnaby is NOT getting the hint as per every good potential archnemesis, so he walks away the enigmatic and beautiful man he is. He's going to live his best anti-hero ( / villain/ whatever morally gray character label you have assigned to him) life.

In season one he purposefully zeroes in on Barnaby (not that he had to do much work because Barnaby had already zeroed in on him), aggravates him with the iconic "What will you do to me, catch me and rip off my suit, tear me limb from limb?". He's putting in the fucking WORK for this shit.

Barnaby proved that he was not the hero he had thought he was, by trying to kill him. What he sees is a man no different from all the other heroes he had written off. Yuri’s disappointment was palpable. Barnaby's sense of justice didn't just contradict his, it was NONEXISTENT. He kinda loses interest. Barnaby fucked up his first real date with an actual rival. Poor guy. He could have lived that anime protagonist life. He's young, handsome, and capable. He could have had a crime syndicate to destroy, and a vigilante rival to boot.

Yuri put in all that narrative work, the private cryptic conversations, high-speed chasing only for Barnaby to fuck it all up by not being his exact narrative parallel. Damn you Bunny. You're the reason Yuri can't create a cohesive narrative in his memoir (diary).

All is lost. How can Lunatic be a true Paragon of Justice without some sort of adversary to challenge? Oh, the humanity. Back to the drawing board.
