Random Flash Rogue Headcanons

Ideas that pop up a lot in my fanfics and fanart:

-Mick Rory was a farm kid.

-Roscoe Neyle Dillon is the son of Reginald Norton Dillon, a well-to-do banker, and Rosa Nicole Dillon, his rather pliant, weak-willed wife. Reginald held his son to punishingly high standards and was quick to criticize, berate, and threaten his son when he failed to live up to them. Rosa never intervened.

-Roscoe grew up in North Ridge, a suburb of Central City. He is on the autism spectrum, but grew up before it was widely recognized. He was constantly bullied by his peers and was disliked by most of his teachers because of his odd behavior. He had a number of special interests but the most prominent was, of course, tops.

-Roscoe is one of only three Rogues to attend high school and one of only two to have attended college. Lisa and Hartley also both graduated from high school, and Hartley also went to college. Roscoe studied (possibly has a degree in) physics.

-Roscoe’s parents currently live in Bridgeville.

-Mark (Marco) Mardon is the son of Patricia (Paloma) and Matthew (Matias) Mardon, and the younger brother of Clyde (Claudio) Mardon. His parents immigrated from Guatemala when he was a month and a half old and Clyde was about a year old. Both parents were college-educated, which made the process simpler than it otherwise would have been, and the family initially settled in Dunhurst, a suburb of Central City. However, they were never accepted there, and they eventually left the town after persistent harassment from the Clan of the Fiery Cross.

-They resettled in Bridgeville, and Matias and Paloma went to great pains to hide the fact that they were immigrants, Americanizing their names and refusing to let their sons speak Spanish outside of the home. Patricia became the head of the local library, and Matthew took a job as a teacher of geography at the local high school. The family eventually settled fairly comfortably in the middle class.

-Clyde was only 11 months older than Mark, so they were always in the same year at school. He was handsome, intelligent, popular, and athletic. Mark, by contrast, was painfully average. He couldn’t live up to the standard set up by his parents’ golden child, and eventually, he stopped trying, knowing that he would never measure up. He and Clyde were very close, but their relationship was often strained by the fact that Mark was so often compared unfavorably to Clyde.

-Mark dropped out of high school at 16 and ran away, eventually drifting into petty theft due to his lack of direction. Clyde, meanwhile, graduated high school early and earned a degree in meteorology. He started work on the Weather Wand when he was still in college, but didn’t finish it until he was 23. He died not long after of congenital heart failure, and then his shiftless younger brother strolled in and took the wand for himself.

-Samuel Joseph Scudder was born to Percival and Martha Scudder. Unfortunately, Percival contracted cancer a few months before Sam was born and died when his son was only 7 months old, leaving his wife with dozens of medical bills. The Scudders had never been particularly well-off, so Martha was forced to move into an apartment complex on Baker Street, colloquially known as Skid Row, where she would raise her young son.

-Martha was a talented seamstress, so much so that she was eventually hired by the Rathaways. While this provided steady work, the Rathaways were extremely demanding employers, and so Martha wasn’t able to be at home with her son as much as she would’ve liked.

-Young Sam loved cowboy movies and superhero comics. He was especially fond of the JSA and gathered a collection of JSA comics that he still owns (currently, he hides them in the Mirror Realm so the other Rogues won’t find out about them). He was also a boy scout and eventually became an Eagle Scout. He was highly intelligent and generally did well in school, and he was close friends with Jennifer Conners, who lived in the same apartment complex he did. When they entered high school, the two started dating, and even fantasized about getting married.

-Unfortunately, life on Baker Street was less than ideal. Sam was embarrassed by the shabby state of his clothes and possessions, had to watch as his mother tried to figure out how to pay their bills, and was surrounded by violence. Fights were common in the apartment complex where Sam lived, and, when he was 15 years old, he and Jennifer bore witness to Jennifer’s father being brutally shot as they came home from school. Both were traumatized. Jennifer began a years-long struggle with PTSD, and Sam’s anxiety levels went through the roof. Not wanting to burden his mother and knowing that they didn’t have enough money for therapy, Sam turned to cigarettes, and then alcohol, in the hopes of relieving his anxiety. As he spiraled into addiction, he got mixed up with the school’s party crowd, and dropped out at 17. He drifted into a life of crime and was sent to prison at age 19 for robbing a convenience store. In this prison, he would mostly break his alcohol addiction, but his smoking habit only got worse. More importantly, however, while serving his sentence for this crime, he would discover the Mirror Realm.

-Sam loves his mother, but he avoids her because he knows his actions disappoint and worry her. His ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Conners, though continually struggling with PTSD, managed to graduate from both high school and college, and currently works as a school counselor. Sam avoids her, too, but still holds a bit of a candle for her.

-Mrs. McCulloch’s first name is Eva. She is devoutly Catholic, and, as a result, Evan is also devoutly Catholic (albeit a very confused Catholic). He goes to Mass at least once a week, believes priests are basically infallible, and will threaten to kill you if you so much as look at a nun funny. He goes to Confession at least once a month and would probably go more often if each session didn’t last three hours.

-Giovanni Giuseppi (James Jesse) is the son of Helen and Alessandro Giuseppi, both of whom are the children of Italian immigrants. He has a very, very, very large extended family, most of whom are in the circus with his parents. Many of them speak Italian; while James isn’t fluent in the language, he can understand it quite well and speak it well enough to get by. The whole family is very emotionally demonstrative and physically affectionate, which is part of why James has no concept of personal space. His relatives include his Zia Catalina (who runs an Italian restaurant), his Nonna Gianna, his Nonno Antonio, his Nonno Aberto, his Nonna Lucrezia, his Zio Luca, his Aunt Stella, his Zio Angelo, his Zia Loretta, his Zia Lucia, his Zio Armani, his Aunt Karen, his Zia Bianca, his Zio Rocco, his Zio Romeo, his Aunt Olivia, his Zia Etta, his Zio Dante, his Uncle Fred, his Aunt Susan, his Uncle Harold, his Aunt Lydia, his cousins Bobby and Susie and Maria and Carly and Matthew and Frank and Julia and Freddie and Joseph and Lucy, and his cousins’ kids, Angela and Charlie and Stefano and Gian and Marsha and Rose and Kaitlyn and Steve. He’s not entirely sure how he’s related to most of them. James’ family is all technically Catholic, mainly because they’re all Italian, but only about half of them are practicing Catholics.

-James invented the airwalker shoes when he was 13 years old.

-There was a very large age gap between Leonard and Lisa’s parents when they got married. This is because Larry/Lewis Snart was a 40-year-old creeper who got a 15-year-old girl pregnant. Shirley married him because she had nowhere else to go; her parents kicked her out when she got pregnant. She dropped out of high school soon after, and, after several years of abuse, she ran away, leaving Len and Lisa alone with Larry/Lewis.

-Len is about 5 years older than Lisa; he dropped out of high school at 14 so that he could support her and left home at 18. He continued to send money to her after he left, even after she became a professional figure skater.

-Lisa’s teenaged years were one long nightmare. She was a beautiful young woman, but because of her background, her mother’s reputation as a loose woman, and her father constantly calling her nasty names, she was demonized by the “nice, proper” people of her neighborhood as a temptress, someone who would lead their sons astray. (This in spite of the fact that they were often the ones making advances on her.) Her father also became increasingly abusive towards her, as Leonard had left the home and, as she got older, Lisa started to remind him of his wife. In response, she threw herself into her figure skating and tried to shut the rest of the world out. By the time she was 16, she was already one of the most talented skaters in the Midwest, and when she was 17, she left her father’s house and moved in with another girl on her skating team for the rest of high school. She graduated with a B+ average and was promptly snapped up by a professional figure skating team. Lisa had managed to escape-at least physically. Her teenaged years left her convinced that her beauty was something dangerous; something evil, and it took Roscoe over a year to break down her defenses when they met. However, once he did, she fell deeply in love. Finally, she had found someone who would never abandon her.

-Roscoe, for his part, was equally in love. After years of being seen as a socially awkward weirdo, he had found someone who thought he was sophisticated and intelligent; someone who didn’t laugh at his tops and who didn’t seem bothered by his quirks. It was intoxicating.

-Geraldine is 20 years younger than Hartley; she was born to replace him as the heir to the Rathaway fortune.

-Hartley’s parents were in their thirties when he was born. Both of them came from long-established “old money” families; their marriage was more the result of a business deal between Hartley’s grandparents than any sort of romantic relationship. Prior to her marriage, Rachel was a Kane. Her uncle was the father of Jacob Kane (father to Kathy Kane) and Martha Wayne (nee Kane), making her the first cousin of Bruce Wayne’s mother. Red hair runs in the Kane family, and she passed it on to both of her children.

-Similarly, Hartley’s paternal grandmother was originally a Queen before marrying into the Rathaway family. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg: Hartley’s at least a distant relative of most of the wealthiest people in the DCU.

-Geraldine is on the autism spectrum; she’s able to mask her symptoms well enough that her parents haven’t decided to pull the “let’s fix her with expensive surgeries” trick that they used when Hartley was born deaf.

-Hartley’s parents engaged him to a girl named Kathryn Kendell, the heir to a fast food corporation, when he was 18; nothing came of it because he got himself disowned before the marriage could actually happen.

-Hartley’s parents are intensely controlling and basically make all the decisions in their children’s lives without actually asking them for their opinions.

-Len Snart is prone to ulcers.

-Albert and Rita Desmond have an infant son named Alan. He likes to chew on his father’s Philosopher’s Stone. Alvin adores his “astral nephew” and kept showing up at Albert’s house uninvited to see him. Eventually Albert got tired of Alvin breaking in and put him on their baby-sitting list. Rita is less than thrilled by this but is at least pleased that Alan keeps Alvin from trying to ruin Albert’s life.

-George Harkness has two half-brothers: an older brother named Tom Harkness, the son of Agnes and Ian Harkness, and a much younger brother named Walter Wiggins, the 12-year-old son of W.W. Wiggins and his wife. (All these characters are canonical, but it’s never actually been officially stated that this is the case.)

-Jai West idolizes Jay Garrick and plans to take up his costume someday.

-Josh Jackam-Mardon’s weather-controlling abilities are directly tied to his mood. When he’s happy, it’s sunny and he makes rainbows. If he’s cold, the temperature will increase. If he’s hot, the temperature will drop and it might even start snowing. If he’s sad, it rains. If he throws a temper tantrum, it creates a thunderstorm-and if he’s really upset, a tornado will form.

-When Barry Allen was 13, he paid the admission fee that was required in order to meet the members of the JSA for both himself and a 9-year-old Sam Scudder. It’s one of both men’s fondest memories, and neither realizes that the other was the boy who met the JSA with him on that day.

-Axel Walker is the son of Alan Walker and Alice Strickland. His father is a used car salesman who left his wife for Axel’s stepmother, Barbie, when Axel was 7 years old. Axel does not like Barbie and isn’t particularly happy with his father, either. Axel’s mother is Jewish. As such, so is Axel (although Axel doesn’t practice his faith much, if at all.) He can read a bit of Hebrew and speak a bit of Yiddish.

-Eobard Thawne is convinced that he is an expert in 21st-century technology. The result: “This is a historical device called a toaster. It served as a primitive form of climate control!”

-Abra Kadabra, by contrast, spends most of his time in the 21st century baffled by the devices used by these primitive savages. What sort of communication device doesn’t send a perfect three-dimensional copy of your body to the person you’re talking to? What kind of food-preparation device takes twenty minutes to cook a meal? Why don’t their hygiene devices instantly clean their bodies of dirt and odors instead of requiring water that’s never a comfortable temperature? HOW DO YOU OPERATE THIS ‘REMOTE CONTROL’? This makes him a very annoying house guest.

-Mick Rory is an accomplished cook, home repairman, and knitter.

-Albert Desmond is often so lost in thought that he puts his keys in the refrigerator.

-All of the Rogues are more scared of Iris Allen than they are of Barry. And with good reason.

-Owen Mercer is good friends with Joan Garrick.

-Sam is developing the early stages of emphysema but refuses to admit it because it would mean having to try to kick his smoking habit.

-Mick Rory’s body is covered by third-degree burns, and his voice is unnaturally raspy because of all the smoke inhalation he’s undergone over the years.

-Mark Mardon is a horrible klutz. If he can trip over something, he will end up doing it. This is part of why he likes being able to fly so much.

-Len Snart and Sam Scudder are huge fans of Central and Keystone City’s sports teams. Linda Park-West is among the few who can rival their civic pride in this regard. Evan and Digger are both big fans of rugby and cricket. Hartley is solely a baseball fan; the other Rogues don’t much care about sports unless betting is involved.

-Mark Mardon watches the weather channel solely so he can make sure that the reporter’s predictions are wrong.

-Digger loves the great outdoors and can hike for hours.

-Mark Mardon is terrible at cards but gambles constantly anyway. He’s lost more money than he’s ever stolen trying to win bets. James, by contrast, is a master cardsharp.

-Sam and Roscoe spend more money on clothes (and more time in the shower) than the rest of the male Rogues combined.

-Dexter Miles knows the birthdays of everyone in the Twin Cities. No one knows how he knows this, he just does. When it’s a Rogue’s birthday, the museum opens a exhibit exclusively about them for a few days. The Rogues don’t know this is intentional and it’s really starting to freak them out.

-When the Rogues found out that the Flash Museum hires people to dress up as them and teach young visitors about science, Sam Scudder waited for a day when the museum’s ‘Mirror Master’ called in sick and showed up in his place. All the visitors to the museum that day were agreed that he was the best “Mirror Master” the museum had ever had.

-James once went to the Flash Museum in full costume and stood right by one of the statues of him. He even posed in exactly the same way. He was immediately informed by a patron that he was much too blonde to be the real Trickster. James found the whole experience very amusing.

-Roscoe insists that all the statues of him at the Flash Museum make him look fat. Lisa thinks that’s ridiculous and says that they’re almost as handsome as the genuine article. Len agrees that the statues make Roscoe look fat and thinks it’s hilarious.

-All three of the Flashes have, of course, been to the Flash Museum while in costume. Like James, they are often told that they don’t look anything like the real Flashes. Barry and Jay are baffled by this; Wally thinks it’s funny.

-Mick Rory donated his chili recipe to the Flash Museum’s diner. It’s one of the more popular dishes amongst people who love spicy food.

-Wally is trying to convince his wife to get the kids a pet cheetah. “Come on, honey! It’ll be good for the twins to have a pet who can keep up with them!”

Lớp học

Jeno đang chờ Donghyuck trong lớp. Cậu ấy ngồi một mình nghe nhạc khi nghe thấy tiếng cười đùa lớn tiếng đang đi vào phòng. Cậu ấy nhìn lên và thấy Mark cùng với bạn anh ta (Lucas, Jungwoo và Jaemin). Cậu ấy giật tai nghe ra và đi thật nhanh đến chỗ Mark. Jeno đang giận dữ. Tại sao hắn ta lại vui vẻ đến vậy sau khi làm Donghyuck phải đau khổ?

Mark: Jeno à sao cậu lại nổi khùng lên vậy? Trông chẳng khác gì con bò. Haha

Hắn ta tiếp tục cười lớn với bạn của mình nhưng rồi nhận ra lí do vì sao Jeno nổi giận. Hắn không còn cười nữa, môi mím lại thành một đường mỏng.

Jeno: Anh có biết mình đã làm Donghyuck đau lòng như thế nào không hả? Giờ anh vẫn còn cười giỡn với bạn bè của mình cơ mà? Con mẹ nó cười giỡn! Tình cảm là trò đùa của anh à? Hả đồ điên kia!

Jungwoo: Thì thầm từ một phía, nhưng đủ lớn để Jeno có thể nghe thấy Cái gì, Mark cậu vừa chia tay cậu ta à? Kiểu cậu nói về cậu ta, mình tưởng cậu chia tay lâu rồi chứ.

Tim Jeno rộn ràng vì nghe thấy Donghyuck gọi mình như thế. Cậu ấy hít một hơi thật sâu và nắm lấy tay Donghyuck.

Jeno: Chắc cậu cũng đoán được, chuyện này là về Mark.

Donghyuck chậm rãi gật đầu và nhìn vào mắt Jeno

Jeno: Lúc sáng này mình thấy hắn ta cùng bạn bè của mình cười nói vui vẻ, mình đã nổi giận vì sao hắn ta lại vui vẻ đến thế sau khi chia tay cậu. Nhìn cậu như vậy, mình rất đau lòng. Nên mình giáp mặt hắn -

Jeno: -hắn nói hẹn hò với cậu vì thua cược. Mình không biết đã xảy ra chuyện gì nhưng khi nghe đến đấy mình không ngăn được đâ-

Giọng cậu ấy nhỏ lại khi thấy Donghyuck không buồn bã như mình nghĩ. Donghyuck chỉ nhìn xuống ngực của Jeno và chậm rãi bước đến tựa đầu mình lên. Jeno đặt tay lên lưng của Donghyuck và trượt lên xuống vỗ về.

Jeno: Và rồi mình đấm hắn ta. Giờ thì cả hai đều bị phạt ở lại sau giờ học.

Donghyuck không nói gì khi đứng trong vòng tay của Jeno. Cậu ấy không biết phải nói hay phản ứng ra sao. Jeno sau đó mới nhận ra Donghyuck đang khóc. Im lặng để những giọt lệ thấm đẫm áo hoodie của Jeno.

Donghyuck: [Sotto voce] Chí ít là cậu không bị đình chỉ học.

Jeno: Ừm, chắc là vậy.

Donghyuck cẩn thận lùi lại và bọn họ liền đi đến phòng học tiết tiếp theo, rằng chắc chắn cả hai đều đã rất trễ học rồi.

Sau giờ học - Lớp học

Jeno và Donghyuck dọn dẹp lớp học sau khi mọi người đều đi về. Bọn họ quyết định ngồi nghỉ một chút trên chiếc bàn, cạnh bên nhau. Donghyuck cứ đau đáu về điều gì đó từ khi họ trở về từ con hẻm. Donghyuck thở ra trước khi quyết định nói cho Jeno những câu chữ ngu ngốc cứ liên tục xuất hiện trong đầu cậu ấy.

Donghyuck: Mình biết đó là một lời thách.

Jeno: Cậu đang nói gì vậy? Chuyện về Mark sao?

Donghyuck gật đầu, cậu ấy nói tiếp trong khi đầu vẫn cúi xuống.

Donghyuck: Mình đã biết nó là một lời thách. Nhưng mình đã mong nó không phải sự thật nên mình tự thuyết phục bản thân mình rằng mình chỉ đang tưởng tượng mà thôi. Mình thật ngu ngốc mà. Mình biết chứ. Mình chỉ là, thích anh ta quá nhiều và mình không muốn kết thúc. Mình xin lỗi Jeno. Mình đúng là đồ ngu vì cứ mãi phớt lờ chuyện đó.

Jeno: Vậy cậu vốn đã biết anh ta không có tình cảm với mình nhưng vẫn dấn thân vào sao Hyuck?

Jeno: [V.O] Tại sao cậu lại tự chuốc lấy khổ chứ? Mình có thể đối xử tốt với cậu hơn gấp trăm lần.

Donghyuck: vẫn không dám nhìn vào mắt Jeno và gần như bật khóc Mình xin lỗi Jeno. Tụi mình chia tay là lỗi của mình. Mình lẽ ra phải chia tay anh từ nhiều tuần trước mới phải nhưng là do mình đã không muốn kết thúc.

Jeno: Hyuck à không phải lỗi của cậu, Mark đã hẹn hò với cậu chỉ vì một lời thách! Cậu còn thích hắn ta thật lòng và không muốn chia tay. Điều đó dễ hiểu thôi mà. Cậu đừng tự đổ lỗi cho mình nữa. Mình sẽ chăm sóc cho cậu mà nên cậu đừng tự nhận hết lỗi lầm nữa.

Jeno dừng lại, ôm lấy gương mặt của Donghyuck để cậu ấy có thể nhìn Jeno. Jeno nở nụ cười, khoe ra đôi mắt cười xinh đẹp của mình, làm Donghyuck thoáng đỏ mặt.

Jeno: Lỗi ở ai không quan trọng, cậu vẫn có mình đây và mình quan tâm đến cậu và mình sẽ mãi bên Màn cậu. Cậu biết đấy. Đừng nghĩ về những chuyện trước kia mình đã làm nữa, như vậy chỉ chuốc thêm hối hận mà thôi.

Jeno buông gương mặt của Donghyuck ra, cậu ấy cũng dần đỏ mặt, xấu hổ vì mình đột nhiên nghiêm túc. Cậu ấy nhảy xuống khỏi bàn và vỗ hai tay vào nhau rồi sau đó tóm lấy chổi cũng ki hốt rác.

Jeno: Quét dọn cho xong nào rồi mình sẽ mời cậu uống gì đó nhé.

Màn 10

Quán Cafe’

Jeno ngồi trên chiếc ghế xoay nhìn ra khung cửa sổ. Donghyuck thì đang gọi thức uống. Hai tay Jeno ôm lấy gương mặt mình và tự suy ngẫm.

Jeno: Mình dạo này làm sao vậy? Mình cứ nói những điều thật … ngu ngốc. Nếu Donghyuck biết được tình cảm của mình sẽ ngượng nghịu lắm. Mình cũng chẳng giỏi che giấu nữa! Jeno à chấn chỉnh bản thân lại xem. Mày đã giấu tình cảm bao nhiêu lâu nay rồi tại sao bây giờ cứ phải thể hiện lồ lộ ra làm gì chứ?

Luồng suy nghĩ của Jeno bị cắt ngang khi Donghyuck ngồi xuống bên cạnh.

Donghyuck: Bọn họ nói sẽ đem đồ uống lại cho tụi mình.

Jeno gật đầu và bọn họ dành mấy giờ đồng hồ tiếp theo cùng nhau vui vẻ uống món cà phê nóng hôi hổi của mình.

Màn 11

Một tuần sau đó, phòng ký túc của Jeno.

Bọn họ như thường lệ trải qua một tuần, Donghyuck vẫn đang hồi phục sau khi chia tay nhưng đã cảm thấy tốt hơn rất nhiều. Donghyuck hẹn gặp nhau ở phòng của Jeno sau giờ học.

Jeno: Sao cậu lại muốn gặp ở phòng mình vậy? Tụi mình có thể đi chơi trong khuôn viên trường như mọi khi mà.

Donghyuck: Mình có chuyện muốn nói với cậu.

Jeno hơi lo lắng bởi vì sự nghiêm túc trong tông giọng của Donghyuck. Jeno cũng lạc giọng đi để bắt kịp sự nghiêm túc đường đột đó.

Jeno: Chuyện gì vậy. Bạn có thể nói cho mình bất cứ chuyện gì, hoặc không cũng được, nếu cậu không muốn cho mình biết.

Giọng nói cậu ấy càng lúc càng nhỏ lại, và cậu ấy thấy Donghyuck nép lại gần hơn.

Donghyuck cúi mặt tiến lại bên cạnh Jeno. Jeno chỉ biết mỉm cười vì sự đáng yêu của đối phương khi cố tỏ ra nghiêm túc.

Nụ cười của Jeno dần bay biến khi đôi môi của Donghyuck chạm vào môi cậu ấy trong phút chốc. Một cái chạm thật khẽ. Donghyuck ngại ngùng gãi cổ mình rồi nhìn lên Jeno. Hai má của Donghyuck cũng đỏ ửng.

Donghyuck: Như thế này có sao không?

Jeno ngỡ ngàng nhìn Donghyuck - vẫn cố gắng hiểu chuyện gì đang xảy ra. Sau một lúc cứ tưởng như cả thế kỳ, cậu ấy cũng nhận ra mình đang cần trả lời một câu hỏi.

Jeno đặt tay lên lưng của Donghyuck, chậm rãi vuốt lên đến cổ của cậu ấy và kéo cậu ấy lại gần. Đôi môi của cả hai chạm nhau một lần nữa.

Đó là một nụ hôn ướt át, ban đầu có chút ngượng ngùng, nhưng dần dà lưỡi của bọn họ bắt đầu khiêu vũ và tay của Jeno vuốt ve gáy của Donghyuck. Đây là mơ sao? Cậu ấy không biết. Jeno: Không đâu cưng à.

Jeno vén một vài sợi tóc của Donghyuck sau tai.

Jeno: Miễn là bây giờ mình đã được bên cậu.

Donghyuck: rợn người Jeno à, ghê quá đi.

Donghyuck bật cười và hôn lên môi Jeno lần nữa.

Série A, l'hebdo numéro 1

Le point sur la préparation et le mercato des grosses écuries de ce championnat...

La Juve et son recrutement intelligent

Durant ce mercato, la Juventus de Turin s'est renforcée de fort belle manière au poste de défenseur central qui a fait faute la saison passée notamment à cause des multiples blessures de Giorgio Chiellini qui a été forfait lors de la double confrontation décisive face à l'Ajax d'Amsterdam mais aussi à cause d'un Leonardo Bonucci qui n'est pas vraiment au niveau depuis son retour l'été dernier. En effet, les bianconeri ont déboursé pas moins de 119 millions pour fortifier ce secteur de jeu avec l'arrivée du colosse néerlandais Matthijs De Ligt (75 millions), et de deux révélations l'an passée en Série A, Merih Demiral (18 millions) et Cristian Romero (26 millions). La Juve a aussi renouvelé son milieu de terrain avec l'arrivée pour zéro euros d'Aaron Ramsey et d'Adrien Rabiot. Ces deux nouvelles recrues pousseraient vers la sortie Blaise Matuidi et Sami Khedira. On enregistre également le retour de Gianluigi Buffon, la légende de ce club qui endosserait le rôle de second gardien derrière Wojciech Szczesny. Côté départ, la Juventus de Turin a échangé Leonardo Spinazzola contre Luca Pellegrini + 7,5 millions. Le mercato réalisé en ce moment par Fabio Paratici permettrait aux hommes de Sarri de rayonner au niveau national et continental.

Naples et son mercato d'opportuniste...

Le Napoli a réalisé un des plus beau coup de ce mercato italien, en échegeant Amadou Diawara + 15 millions, jeune milieu de terrain guinéen qui n'est jamais entré dans les plans de Carlo Ancelotti à cause notamment de sa blessure qui l'a tenu éloigné des terrains pendant plus de deux mois, mais aussi à cause de la rude concurrence au milieu avec Fabian Ruiz, Piotr Zielinski et Allan, contre Kostas qu'on ne présente plus. Le club napolitain voulait redynamiser son attaque c'est pourquoi, début juin, il avait approché le PSV pour s'offrir les services d'Hirving Lozano mais tout a capoté à cause d'une histoire de droit d'image qui faisait monter le salaire du méxicain. Le Napoli s'est alors penché sur le cas de James Rodriguez qui est considéré comme indésirable au Real Madrid, mais le président De Laurentiis a force de vouloir faire baisser le prix s'est fait doublé par l'Atlético Madrid qui est en passe de boucler l'arrivée de James. Le club napolitain a quand même vu arriver deux gardiens en transfert définitif, il s'agit de David Opsina pour 3,5 millions et Alex Meret pour 22 millions. Coté départ, Roberto Inglese s'est engagé avec Parme pour environ 14 millions.

L'Atalanta mise sur la continuité...

Le club bergamasque qui a fait vibrer l'an passé toute l’Europe et qui a réussi à se qualifier pour la plus prestigieuse des coupes européennes, a su tout d'abord conserver son entraîneur Gian Piero Gasperini qui était convoité par de nombreuses écuries italiennes comme la Roma ou encore l'AC Milan. En conservant leur entraîneur, les dirigeants conservent leur projet qui repose essentiellement sur la manière dont Gasperini arrive à faire éclore de nombreux jeunes depuis son arrivée comme Franck Kessié ou encore Bryan Cristante. L'Atalanta, pour l'instant, arrive à garder leurs cadres sur le terrain comme Papu Gomez, Josip Illic et Duvan Zapata qui ont fait le bonheur la saison dernière des supporters bergamasque. Ils ont aussi étoffé leur effectif avec l'arrivé de Luis Muriel et de Malinovskyi pour moins de 30 millions. Cependant, le feuilleton de l'été coté Atalanta était le fait de trouver un stade pour pouvoir jouer la Ligue des Champions, et c'est fait, ils joueront à San Siro même si cette décision a fait beaucoup de bruit à Milan notamment par l'intermédiaire de la Curva Sud Milano, principal groupe de supporter milanais.

L'Inter, l'heure du grand ménage...

Alors qu'il était en stage de pré-saison à Lugano en Suisse, Mauro Icardi qui est en conflit depuis le 14 février avec son club a été écarté de ce stage par son nouvel entraîneur Antonio Conte. En plus de cette exclusion, Mauro Icardi ne fera pas parti du groupe qui s'envolera en Asie pour une tournée de matchs amicaux. L'argentin qui souhaiterait rester à l'Inter, ne serait pas dans les petits papiers de son entraîneur et des dirigeants qui voudraient même le vendre, on sait que la Juve s'est montré intéressé par le joueur. Radja Nainggolan, recruté l'année dernière pour 38 millions, pourrait suivre le même chemin qu'Icardi puisque Beppe Marotta, le directeur sportif, a déclaré « Icardi et Nainggolan ne rentrent pas dans notre projet ». Pour compenser, le club interiste a été très actif sur le marché des transferts puisqu'il a enregistré quatre arrivées et pas des moindres avec tout d'abord celle de Diego Godin qui n'a rien coûté puisqu'il est arrivé libre. Les dirigeants de l'Inter ont ensuite cassé la tirelire pour s'offrir les services de deux espoirs italiens, Nicolo Barella pour 45 millions d'euros et Stefano Sensi pour 25 millions. L'Inter de Milan a également fait venir Lazaro pour 20 millions. Si l'Inter arrive à recruter Romelu Lukaku, ils auraient une équipe qui ressemble à quelque chose notamment avec Antonio Conte aux manettes.

L'AC Milan, place au renouvellement...

Avec son chamboulement à la tête du club, le Milan a changé de ligne directive puisqu'il souhaite désormais miser sur la jeunesse comme on peut le voir avec le recrutement de Krunic et de Bennacer pour moins de 25 millions. En plus de cela, l'AC Milan a également changé de coach puisque Marco Giampaolo a remplacé Gennaro Gattuso. Avec ce changement le club milanais a revu complètement son effectif puisque le nouvel entraîneur souhaite s'appuyer un 4-3-1-2, ce qui rend de nombreux joueurs indésirables, même si le tacticien italien a déclaré vouloir voir tous les joueurs avant de donner son accord pour une vente. Coté match amical, l'AC Milan affrontera Novara ce vendredi avant de s'envoler pour sa tournée américaine où il jouera contre le Bayern, Benfica et Manchester United. Enfin, selon les rumeurs, les milanais souhaiteraient tenter la piste Luka Modric même si son salaire de 12,5 millions par an freinerait les dirigeants milanais.

La Roma, le grand flou...

Après une saison plus que décevante, l'AS Roma est attendue au tournant pas ses supporters notamment à cause de son divorce avec les deux légendes du club à savoir Francesco Totti qui a démissionné de son poste au sein de la direction sportive et Daniele De Rossi qui n'a pas été prolongé. En plus de cela, le club de la capitale s'est séparé de ses deux meilleurs joueurs de la saison passée, Kostas Manolas et Stephan El-Shaarawy qui est parti en Chine pour 16 millions. Même le directeur sportif, Petrachi a confié lors d'une conférence de presse que si il pouvait, il changerait tout l'effectif ce qui montre bien l'état actuel de la Roma. Cependant, elle reste active sur le mercato avec l'arrivée de Jordan Veretout pour 19 millions, de Spinazzola, de Pau Lopez pour 23,5 millions et celle d'Amadou Diawara lors de la transaction avec le Napoli pour Manolas. L'AS Roma se trouve dans une impasse où il ne faut pas se manquer pour pouvoir redevenir une des grandes équipes de Série A.

New Years in New Zealand

Christmas belongs to the northern hemisphere. But on New Years Eve, there is nowhere better to be than New Zealand.

So many holidays seem backwards in New Zealand. For one, I’ll never get used to sipping Chardonnay on a deck drenched in summer sunshine on Christmas Day. Christmas belongs in the northern hemisphere, where you gather because it’s cold, bask in company to stave off winter’s depression, and wrap yourselves in blankets while opening presents.

But New Years Eve only makes sense in New Zealand.

“I never miss a New Years in New Zealand,” I told the American professor sitting next to me on the December 28 flight to Auckland from Chicago, who was headed to a conference in Otago. As my flight took off I had promised a friend in the Midwest I would try and get a photo of what it felt like to spent New Years in New Zealand with my friends.

“Where are you going?” the professor asked.

“Auckland,” I replied, unable to suppress a smile as I said it.

“I wrote a novel about the friends I met within weeks of moving there 15 years ago,” I said. “I’m pretty much headed straight to them.”

I smiled wry. “What designates who comes first? Chronology or hierarchy?”

I may have been born in Chicago, but I found myself in New Zealand. Yet when people think of New Zealand, they often think of visuals like this.

Yet landscape photos of New Zealand don’t really capture the experiences I’ve had. My friends in New Zealand don’t like rugby and they don’t climb mountains. My friends are Antipodean urban rats. Some of the best times I’ve ever have been prowling K Road with Matt, who goes by Karma Chaos when dressed in drag.

Often I would take the stage alongside him, pantomiming on the guitar I dragged around ever since leaving Illinois but at the time rarely plugged in.

Matt is so full of life and adventure at the time I thought I would spend a wild few months with him and then watch him dance off into the sunset, our paths never to cross again. I was wrong. Our friendship is one of the longest and most loyal I’ve ever had. When Matt got married in 2015, I was the photographer.

By the time I landed Matt and Gian were already in Whangamata, about two hours outside of Auckland. There is something about the air in Auckland that I sense as soon as I step off the plane. It speaks to me: You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Your life is about to change in ways you could never imagine, but only if you let it.

Rather than roll straight off the 16-hour flight and onto a bus, I spent a day in urban solitude, acclimatising to the city’s rhythms.

When I turned off Kitchener Street, my spirit still lifts at the sight of the massive tree branches that seem defy gravity and turn the pathway into Albert Park into a tunnel.

After journalling against a tree I grabbed a few pieces of sushi at my favourite spot on High Street and headed to the Tepid Baths for some sauna and swimming sets, backstroking as the sun streamed onto the water through the skylights. They’re a bit fussy about photos in there so I didn’t whip my phone out, but here’s an image from NewsHub to get a sense of what it feels like. In your imagination, add some rows of bunting in primary colours; floating past them on your back is such a relaxing sight.

(To be fair, the photo is from an article about the pools being closed due to a legionella outbreak; no place is perfect).

On my way back to Britomart, it was winter and midnight in Chicago, where I had been not 24 hours before. In Auckland, it was seven pm on a summer’s evening; people were sunning in the grass downtown as the sun set behind the buildings.

Fifteen years on, I still marvelled: I can’t believe this place exists.

After waking up on New Years Eve, I stopped by the Tepid Baths again before getting on the bus to Whangamata around noon. I could have dried, straightened, and styled my hair. But also, fuck it.

Gian picked me up in Thames and we rolled across the Coromandel Peninsula to Whangamata. Eleven of us were staying in a house that Lucas had been given to live in as part of his job working for Water Care, which was how he was getting his permanent residency. Technically speaking, it was a bach, which is shorthand in New Zealand for “a few planks thrown together, no heating, little electricity, and not much thought put into it.”

When New Zealand wants to publicise itself, it shows off landscapes. It does not show the houses. Gian and I cast our eyes over the sign that had been spray-painted on a plank of wood leaning against the deck.

“Happy new year bithes?” we mused.

Matt was grinning from ear to ear inside, a drink lodged in his hand. “Happy New Year bitches!” he cried. “Did you see the sign? Did you spot it?”

“It’s missing a C,” I said.

“I KNEW you would notice,” he replied. “Yulie did it.”

“My English isn’t very good!” Yulie cried. She had moved over from Russia two years ago and had no intention of going back. Long may it last, she said of her time in New Zealand. Residency dependent.

“It’s our new name for our crew!” Matt cried. “We are The Bithes!”

Matt frowned at the sight of my air-dried hair and fresh face. “You don’t style yourself at all when you’re not with me,” he cried.

“I’m not going to not go swimming just to impress you, Matt,” I replied.

Matt pulled at my hair, applied eyeshadow, called for lipstick. He stepped back. “There! Now you look like you have a home! God, you looked like we picked you up off the side of the ROAD!”

I smiled. “Yeah, and you know why I do it? ‘Cause I know you’ll always pick me up anyway.”

Matt sighed. “True.” He put a final piece of hair into place. “Now you look how you’re supposed to: like a rock star.”

Gian and Lucas fussed in the kitchen over potatoes and lamb and ham that Matt glazed. Another contrast to the few New Zealand cultural cliches is that my friends are also rarely from New Zealand. Matt came over from the UK as a kid. His partner Gian is from Brazil. As we ate, we marvelled how amongst the crew of 11, only three were from New Zealand. We were born all over the world: Brazil, Poland, Russia, the UK, the United States, Zimbabwe. Yet we had all met in New Zealand. We crossed paths through looking for the same thing: adventure, freedom, presence, joie de vivre.

This is not unusual. As of 2016, 39% of the people in Auckland are foreign-born migrants, making Auckland more diverse than New York or London.

“Never done it before,” Matt said of the glaze. It was beautiful, we all agreed.

As the night wore on, none of the photos of New Years Eve quite captured that free-spirited feeling of being in New Zealand that I envisioned. We could have been having a dance party anywhere, hair slowly getting messed, irises growing wider by the minute.

Matt and I held each other and marvelled at our 15 years of friendship. The last New Years I had spent with him was one decade ago: 2009 rolling into 2010, before moving to the South Island.

“This year, we return to the stage,” Matt insisted.

“Fuck yes,” I agreed. “We’ll write some more songs, too.” Our band had finished one song but written parts of another dozen and had about 17 hypothetical albums, most of which were only titles.

Somewhere around 4.30am I fell into a horizontal position, leaving Gian in the hands of Matt and Grant. Gian thought he was on K Road. Matt and Grant had plenty of questions for him.

“I’m going to Family Bar,” Gian said.

“Okay,” Matt replied, calm as. “You go ahead. I’ll be there in five minutes.

Gian didn’t move.

“Wait,” Matt said. “What about the guys we were going to sleep with?”

Gian thought for a minute. “They’re at Hannah’s.”

Matt and I looked at each other. “Who is?”

“The guys from Grindr.”

“All of them?” we marvelled.

“No.” Gian paused. “Some of them.”

“How many?” Matt pressed.

Gian hesitated. “Twenty.”

Matt and I doubled over in laughter. “Twenty?”

The room started to stir sometime in the afternoon. Lucas, Antony, and Gian drew us to the beach, which was a five-minute walk away. It was a New Years Day tradition in Brazil to jump seven waves for good luck.

We walked towards the water in a line and jumped seven together, calling out the numbers as they passed.

“Now nothing bad will happen this year,” Antony said.

Afterwards we dove under the waves, splashed, doggy paddled, and floated on our backs.

“The North Island is a different country!” I cried. Try relaxing in the water in a bikini on the South Island. Get back to me once the feeling returns in your feet. I give it a week.

I insisted on a portrait of Matt and Gian on the beach, four years on from their wedding.

Everyone else was staying in Whangamata for another five days, but as much as I love the party lifestyle, I cannot stay. It was time to return to the South Island. Yet after some strife in Chicago, I was relaxed, refreshed, ready to return to the PhD. My sacral chakra had opened. Auckland was within me.

My last afternoon we headed to a waterfall that had slowed to a trickle due to months without rain. Still, the pools were deep enough for cannonballs. I sat in the shallows between the pools and tried one last time for the photo. Ashley surfaced in the water behind me as I panned.

“Smile, Ashley,” I said as I moved the phone in her direction. “This is a panoramic shot.”

“Ah!” she cried, mouth open, trying to move out of the way as I passed.

“Kind of like Lord of the Rings,” we mused.

“That image is going to haunt me,” Antony said, zooming in.

Nailed it.
