Review: Praying with the Enemy

Synopsis:

When pilot Captain Ward Millar is forced to eject over enemy territory in North Korea, the ejection explosion snaps both of his ankles. Unable to walk, he is easily captured by North Korean and Chinese soldiers who interrogate, threaten, and starve him for strategic wartime information. He feeds the enemy false information while plotting his escape. But it's only a matter of time before they discover his lies. He knows it will take a miracle to gain his freedom, but his previous self-reliance on his own capabilities has never included appealing to a higher power. If only he had faith like his wife, Barbara, whose firm belief in God can move mountains.

North Korean soldier Kim Jae Pil was raised to believe in the power of prayer, but, knowing the Communist Party's views on religious groups, Kim and his family must keep their Christian faith secret. He is desperate to escape the army, return to his family, and then flee to South Korea.

With Millar imprisoned and unable to walk, and the North Korean army increasingly suspicious of Kim's actions, it seems impossible that either man will find the freedom they so desperately desire. But when these wartime foes cross paths, they find in each other an unlikely ally. Despite speaking different languages, Millar and Kim find common ground in their fragile faith and must rely on each other to undertake a daring escape.

Plot:

It was a routine exercise. Retired from World War Two, Captain Ward Millar stayed in the reserve for a few extra dollars, not realizing how soon America would go to war again. June 11, 1951, Ward was in South Korea, fighting North Korea, thousands of miles away from his wife, Barbara. His goal was to make his required number of flights to return home and stay home. When the end of his plane caught fire, Ward made the terrible choice to eject into enemy territory, rather than die in the sky. Breaking both ankles on impact, Ward waited for the American rescue team to come and pick him up. But they missed him, leaving Ward to be captured by the enemy. 

Kim Jae Pil did not want to fight. The North Koreas burned down his church, forced a gun in his hand, and stole his parent's land - all for the good of the people. But how can it be good for their people, if it goes against Jae Pil’s belief? When an American plane crashed, Jae Pil saw it as a time to act as he died in the fires and escaped back to his village. Reuniting with his mother, she said that all their family fled south, but she stayed back waiting for Jae Pil to return. About to take a break for the border, Jae Pil was spotted in the village and questioned why this able-bodied young male was not enlisted. Enlisting under a different name, Jae Pil looked for opportunities to escape.  

Thoughts: 

Steven Collis wrote this true story of an American pilot, and a Korean soldier, both trying to escape the Korean War. Taken from the third-person perspective of Ward and Jae Pil, Collis does an excellent job narrating the story and making this history book seem lively. Not knowing much about the Korean War, Collis has the North vs. South ideologies displayed beautifully throughout the book, as Jae Pil, our North Korea Soldier, was constantly told about the benefits of communism, and how great the North is, without actually believing it. Reading about Jae Pil's struggle with accepting what his people want, due to how it went against his religion, made the war seem very real. Ward was also an amazing character, who dealt with inhumane things during his time as a prisoner of war, while still keeping faith that he would see his Barbara again. Where this book does not dive into the horrors of war, as the content is pretty clean despite the story premise, Collis does not shy away about what this story is about. Collis really played into the aspect of “when times are harsh, have faith”, as both Ward and Jae Pil turned towards their religion when things got rough. Not that this is a religious text, as Collis plays the line between our characters praying to their god, but then dealing with the trauma around them on their own. The part of the story I did not like is how long it took Ward and Jae Pil’s storyline to overlap. The entire story had these two characters parallel to each other and only began to have them interact within the last fifty pages. Given the title, I figured these characters would have a lot of intense moments together when in reality they only had one or two. Overall, this is an awe-inspiring and memorable story about how two enemies can find faith in each other to overcome the impossible and escape the hell they find themselves in.

My F*cked Up Collector Backstory AU (Pt. 1)

So, recently I made a post mentioning that I kinda made a small AU type concept for an alternate Collector backstory. A backstory that I described as “kinda really fucked up, even for me”. It seems that a few people are interested, and I believe that it would be fun to at least just put out there for my fellow Collector angst lovers. Maybe even my general angst lovers. Possibly a few Hunter angst lovers? Who knows.

Probably just gonna call this the “Servitude Collector AU”. Might make other types of posts related to it. Might make a few OCs. It kinda relies/thrives on OCs. The OCs won’t quite be the focus of the AU, but they will be important to it.

Anyways, I didn’t quite properly write this out in the form of a proper, straightforward description. Instead, I thought of what is more of a half written one-shot in which I torment Luz and King by making them incredibly uncomfortable as Colly just kinda casually trauma-dumps on them a bit because Colly doesn’t realize how deeply disturbing the topic is.

This is the first part of that thing:

So the Collector now lives in the Owl House with the Owl Fam (might also just live with Camila, but hangs out sometimes in the Demon Realm), and is slowly becoming a functioning member of society. He’s actually relatively chill once you get to know him, just a bit bratty and way too powerful for his age. He also has a habit of saying some…questionable remarks. This is a particularly noteworthy incident.

So Luz, Colly, and King are all chilling in the house, each doing their own thing in the living room. Luz mentions that she needs to go in a few minutes.

Colly, who is eating a sandwich, pauses and asks, “wait, which friend is that one again?”

Luz: “You know, Hunter. The tall, blonde guy? Friend of mine? Doesn’t seem to like you? Used to be the Golden Guard? You probably know him.”

Then Colly casually drops this one-liner: “Oh, right, Belos’ pet.”

The other two people in the room freeze at this, and Luz slowly turns to him to make what is approximately this facial expression:

King, who knows exactly what’s going on here, quickly says: “Collector, buddy, we talked about this.”

The Collector scoffs. “Oh here we go again. I already told you, like, a bajillion times: 1) it’s a cultural thing, 2) it wasn’t that bad, and 3) it wasn’t slavery,” he says before crossing his arms.

Luz is now deeply alarmed, but King and Colly are completely lost in their own little argument at this point.

King: “Based on the way you described it before, it sounds exactly like slavery.”

Colly: “Just because we were considered property, and had little personal rights, and were domestic servants, and could face cruel and unusual punishments for disobedience, and had no property of our own, and were under the threat of execution if we tried to escape, and…okay, that does sound exactly like slavery when I say all that out loud, but I promise you that it isn’t. Besides, it wasn’t all that bad. I mean, I turned out great.”

Luz, quietly, to herself: “Ah, yes, great, well, that’s one way to say it.”

Colly: “Besides, we had some rights. We couldn’t be executed without permission from the king, we were allowed to have guards (we couldn’t really hire our own or ask for them, but we could have them), and it was illegal to punish any of us in ways that would give long lasting physical scars and/or injuries (though, in a society full of magic, that doesn’t mean much).”

King: “Besides the guards, that is less than the bare minimum.”

Colly: “Well since only the royals could have pets, we all lived with pretty well off people, and they would typically treat us pretty well if we behaved. We got nice food, comfortable living spaces, fancy clothes, all that nice stuff. We also never had to do any hard labor unless it involved magic, so I’d say we lived in luxury. Unless your person wasn’t very nice. Then it became a lot more complicated.”

Luz, finally deciding to speak up: “Um, I just have a small question to ask.”

Both turn to her, remembering that she’s present, and Colly gestures for her to continue.

Luz: “Yeah, so, what are you two…talking about? Like, what even is a ‘pet’ in this context?”

Colly gets clearly excited to explain, and immediately begins infodumping.

Colly: “Okay, so, in my species, we have your typical caste system-”

Luz: “Wait, caste system?!”

Colly, annoyed at being interrupted: “Yeah, you know, caste system. Do humans not know what that is?”

Luz: “No, we do…lemme just go grab something real quick.”

She runs out of the room really quickly and scrambles back in with a journal and pencil in hand. The journal is labeled “‘Discussion’ Topics to Have With the Collector”, which is essentially Luz/Camila’s shared journal that basically functions as Colly’s therapy folder, but in journal form. Everyone in our squad has their own “‘Discussion’ Topics” journal (“‘Discussion’ Topics to Have With Luz”, “‘Discussion’ Topics to Have With Hunter”, etc). I would just like to let that be known.

Luz sits back down and opens the journal, ready to start writing.

Luz: “Okay, I’m ready. Go!”

The next part occurs with more visual storytelling stuff.

Colly: “So, ours is, from top to bottom: Monarchs, Nobles, Potential Nobles (which are powerful families that might become nobles), Starkeepers, Planet Organizers, Grand Military, Space Jumpers, Researchers, Librarians, Scholars, Assistant Librarians, Guards, Commoners, and Servants, though nobody is really born a servant. 

If a child is born a commoner, but has unusually high magical potential, then they will typically be taken by the Royal Magic Tracking Agency and sent to the nearest Starkeeper, who will perform a few tests before announcing that a new ‘Servant’ is available. They will label how powerful the child is, therefore determining what type of servant they will be, and hold an auction of sorts overseen by the monarchs. Only nobles and the monarchs can get servants, and nobles are typically only allowed to have one of each type of servant. Monarchs can have a couple, but they are very picky, and only have a few at most, especially considering the number of assassinations some of the servants have planned on each other.

There are a few types of servants: There’s Planners, who do things like keeping track of your records and organizing your schedule and reminding you of important things you need to do and writing things down for you and stuff. There’s Bodyguards, who are your personal protectors at your side at all times. There’s Caretakers, who do things like clean the home and make food and set things out for parties and occasionally act as waiters and stuff. There’s also a few other ones that I don’t really remember. 

And then there’s Pets! Pets are basically there to entertain. You can dress them up to make them look pretty, have them stand around as decorations at parties, do entertainment stuff like singing and dancing and cool tricks, and even play games and stuff! I’d say that Pets are the best, since we don’t have as many responsibilities as the others, besides playing with kids sometimes, if the nobles have any. We’re also often some of the most powerful.

The complicated thing about us Pets is that we have a weird place in the caste system. We’re often considered more important than Commoners and even Guards, and some of us can tell them what to do (depending on the situation), but we aren’t really considered ‘people.’ We’re kind of like really expensive objects. Like, we’re important and powerful people often find us to be more important than not powerful people, and we get taken care of and treated as valuable, but if anyone said that the object should have rights, everyone would laugh. I mean, sure it’s valuable, but it’s not a person. And if someone had to choose between either saving, say, a Commoner, or saving a Pet, everyone would save the Commoner.

And that’s how Pets are viewed. We’re valued, but we don’t really have any kind of bodily autonomy…but hey! It’s better than being a caretaker! Those guys are seriously overlooked and neglected. It’s honestly kinda sad. But I can’t really say anything about that. My Lady was really mad last time…”

Colly spaces out for a second, and Luz stops writing as she and King both look at each other, concerned.

What about a collector x reader (platonic ofc) but the reader is one of the archivists who’s trying to mend things with the collector?

Mh...fine, just bc A- i have a Soft spot for Toh and SPECIFIC the Collector and B- i think i have a concept for this.

I think it depends a lot on whether Collie got along with this Archivist!Reader before the "incident" or whether he is willing to make amends with them. Obviously he wouldn't be willing to fix things with his sibilings who sent him to Earth just to get rid of him, but with Archivist! reader, there may be possibilities.

First of all, what could have been their dynamic with Collie? maybe something similar to Blue Diamond from Steven Universe and Pink Diamond (Collector), but way healthier, I mean, Archivist!reader didn't really have much time for The Collector but they tried to do what they could to keep him happy and entertained.

Maybe they were the ones who read to Collie before bed😭 and that's why he got into the habit of sleeping with a story from the book we see in the special. Perhaps even this Archivist!reader has taught The Collector how to use the spell to turn living beings into puppets (although for another purpose, of course). in general being a figure, although somewhat absent, well-intentioned compared to his other sibilings.

However, one day Collie simply... disappears and Archivist! reader does not know what happened, but as soon as they learns about his interaction with the titans and the power they have, they becomes terrified for the child's safety. so it probably helps to a greater or lesser extent in its disappearance.

imagine their reaction when The Collector simply disappeared/was trapped ☠️ similar to Blue Diamond, Archivist! reader sinks into a great depression for Thousands of Years, mourning the loss of their younger brother.

for the events of the series the other archivists are tired of Archivist reader's sad and poor performance since the incident, so they tell them to go to earth for a while to "get some fresh air" in the hope that they will change their attitude a little.

but surprise surprise, not only when wandering around the planet Archivist! reader realizes how much the world has changed (the witches, the near destruction of the world, A TITAN IS STILL ALIVE) but The Collector IS BACK.

I like to believe that Collie knows when his siblings are around, so when Archivist! reader arrives on Earth he somehow feels that he has to go and/or starts looking for them, which could lead to a pretty nice reunion and even Something sentimental, since we come, Archivist! Reader thought he would never see his little brother again.

although The Collector definitely has many doubts that he wants answered in order to forgive his favorite brother. Although I think he himself could realize that they didn't really participate in his disastrous trip to Earth, it doesn't mean that Collie didn't have fights with them. mainly because of the titans issue.

Archivist!reader may have a difficult time accepting his fault in that matter, but more than anything because his head has been quite battered by his other brothers and because unlike Collie they have not gone through a process where they understand the importance of mortality, Surprisingly, The Collector will have to be the one to guide them this time.

Collie really wants his brother to come to his senses and see the damage they did, for them to fix it together, for things to be like before but better! Even if he is partly angry with them for the incident, he still loves them by having good memories with them.

Let's say Archivist!reader comes to his senses (less traumatic than Collector, but he does it) and accepts not only the bad things he did, but REALLY tries to fix the damage he did to the Boiling Isles. I don't think to the point of fighting with the other Archivists, but he would definitely separate himself from them.

in that case, I can definitely see Collector not only forgiving them, but also welcoming them back into the archives, in the end they both have what they needed in the first place, Archivist! reader to a new point of view of things, beyond of what they can "file" and Collie has his brother :3

I can see Archivist!reader much more present not only in Collie's life in general, but also in his games, now that they are not busy, they can play whatever he wants! They wants to make up for all the lost time, although they doesn't object to just catch up while Collie show them the islands.

Imagine that Archivist!reader collapses when they tell Collector a bedtime story again after so long 😭 since they are so happy to have him again after so many years of silence (even Collie could get sentimental too) .

definitely Archivist!reader becomes quite overprotective of their little brother, almost to the point of a helicopter parent. They stop when they realize they're overstepping their boundaries, but the trauma of The Collector's disappearance is still fresh, so he can't really be that upset (although the subsequent meetings with King are definitely a bit weird).

In general, I think they could go back to being the sibilings they were before but even better, after all now they have all the time in the world to make up for what they lost.

Does Solly have a giant form like in the game? I've been wondering that for a while now (been a longtime follower of your AU and been wanting to know this question for a long time)

SO THIS MAY BE FUNNY… BUT YES AND NO.

Does Colly literally get bigger with no change to him whatsoever? No.

Does he just transform into canon Olly’s final phase? Yes, and it makes sense if I explain it, I promise.

So basically! The pendant Colly wears is literally him. The human body he has is a product of the magic of the Fold of Life in my AU! His human form can sustain injuries like a regular human, although he has an accelerated healing process unlike a normal human in real life. Since Olly’s whole deal is being able to fold himself into whatever he wants, Colly does that too, but with the pendant!

The pendant essentially unfolds itself, wraps the unfolded paper around Colly’s human form, consumes it, and begins folding normally like in canon PMTOK. This leads to him being able to fold himself into any normal origami creation, including his canon form, and all the forms shown in his boss battle!

One might wonder why he even bothers to transform if he’s got his own capable human form, and the answer is that like Olivia, in his base form (the human form is the base form in this AU), he’s not super capable of combat. He’s got a lot of powers of his own, being magic and all, but human bodies can be fragile. Any significant damage sustained to his human form depletes the magic energy of the Fold of Life keeping him, well, alive. You can think of the magic in this case as a human’s blood, essentially. So, it is very much possible for him to die from a human’s blood loss.

On the other hand, origami doesn’t have blood, and the bigger something is, the less a few punches, sword slashes or bow/gunshots could hurt it. Think of how stabbing a rat would pretty much instantly kill it, but stabbing a whale would feel like a mere splinter to it. By transforming from his small pendant and human body (his human form incapable of changing size) to a bigger origami body, Colly is able to simulate that. Taking small scissors could literally kill him if used on his pendant, but small scissors used on a massive and extremely tough paper body may not even leave a scratch.

The way Colly even dies despite all this is because the paper of his pendant that is his life force still manages to become crumbled and torn when Olivia transforms into the giant hammer and repeatedly slams into his large form. He transforms back to his human form when dying, and his body looks beaten up to match. The pendant on him is torn, revealing the Origami Craftsman’s writing inside it. When he takes his last breath, all that is left is the paper used to fold him/his pendant, and his human body dissipates into a fleeting light.

If it’s too confusing an explanation, you can think of Soul Gems in Puella Magi Madoka Magica! The way they work is pretty similar. The same also goes for how the Gems work in Steven Universe. I didn’t base the AU off of either of those series despite adoring them both, but they wound up looking pretty inspired anyway!

Jack’s Squad Has Uno Night

A quick, goofy one-shot fanfic I wrote as copium for the DSAF 3 True Ending

Context (DSAF 3 TRUE ENDING SPOILERS BTW): Everyone has passed onto the afterlife (which is basically Heaven I guess) except at some point, Dave and Blackjack came back for Jack in the void, and Jack and Blackjack re-merged into one being so that Jack could also pass on.

Without further ado,

Jack’s Squad Has Uno Night

“Hey! Hey, you, Phone-face!”

(Oh boy…) “Dave, my face isn’t even a phone anym-”

“Shut up and come play some fuckin’ Uno with us!”

Dave, Dee, Jack, and Peter were all sitting around a table, just about to play their first game of Uno since their Happiest Day.

“Huh. I didn’t even know they had Uno in the afterlife.”

“Come on, Steven, we haven’t started yet, come join us!”

“Eh, sure, why not? What could go wrong…” 

“Hell yeah! We got a spot right here for ya!”

“Dave, I better not regret sitting next to you.”

“Sorry boss, but in Uno, there are no promises! ;)”

“Please don't ever wink at me like that again.”

“Alright, let’s do this! I’ve never gotten to play Uno before!”

“Oh shit, really? They had a deck back in the Flipside y’know, you shoulda said something!”

“...They– what. And you didn’t even think to pass some time down there with a game!? You just kept going on about kebabs the whole time instead!”

“God, don’t remind me…”

“Okay, okay! Whatever! Let’s just start the game already. Jack, you’re up.”

“Oh, uh, sure.”

The card to play off of was a green 2. After surveying his hand for a bit, he started to sweat. After a fair bit of consideration, he played a card.

“Bro, those don’t match.”

“Oh, sorry, wrong card.”

He tried again with a red Draw Two.

“Jack–”

“Nope, you’re right, I just, umm–”

“Jack, you haven’t… somehow forgotten how to play–”

“Of course not, Peter, you think I’d forget after all those games we played with Caroline? …Okay…” 

He laid down his Wild. 

“...

...Okay? Are y–”

“Hush, sir, I’m thinking.”

“It’s the first turn of the game, what is there to think about–”

“I don’t do well under pressure, Steven!” 

*sigh* 

“Sorry, take your time.”

Jack stared very closely at his hand. “...greeeen. Yeah, green.”

“...But it’s already gr–”

“Oh come on! It was 50/50 each– 

Okay, fine, I give up! I tried, but I’m just gonna sit this one out tonight.”

“Jack, what’s up with you, is everything alright?”

“Is it possible–look, I know you’re not a Shadow Doggo right now but– uh–”

“Oooh, I get it! He’s colorblind! Like a doggo!”

“Dave, I swear to God, you better not start being insufferable about this–”

“Oh, c’mon, Sportsy! Would I do that to you?”

“Yes, yes you would Dave.”

“You literally just called me Phone-face minutes ago.”

“Believe me, Steven, you’re not the only one.”

“Jeez, some friends you all are!”

“When I was just Blackjack, you wouldn’t stop treating me like a literal dog!”

“Oh, come on, we're bringin' this up again?! Old sport, you’re exaggerating! And you WERE a doggo in my defense!”

“I told you many times I wouldn’t ‘go fetch,' yet that never stopped you from throwing random stuff and getting all upset every damn time when you had to go get it yourself!”

Dee stifled some laughter.

It was getting intense. Dee and Peter had a fair number of cards, but Steven and Dave both had just one card left. It was Peter’s turn, and after, it would be Steven’s and then Dave’s. Steven was desperate to win just once tonight, but Dave was grinning like a smug bastard next to him.

(Please, just keep it yellow, Peter, I’m begging you.)

“Sorry, but not sorry, boss.” He had a Draw Four for just the occasion. 

“Blue.”

“FUUUCK YEEEAAAAH!” Dave stood up and slammed his last card a little too hard on the poor table.

“HHHHHHH– Y-YOU– YOU MOTHERFFF- H-H-HE-HEC–”

But Dave suddenly turned and grabbed Steven’s shoulders.

“No, Steven, SAY IT! I KNOW YOU’VE GOT IT IN YOU SOMEWHERE!”

“Dave, wh–”

“CALL ME A MOTHERFUCKER, STEVEN.”

“Dave, you’re being scary again–”

“Please, if not for yourself, then do it for me!”

Peter, Dee and Jack were silently transfixed on what was unfolding. Dee reached in for some of Jack's popcorn that he’d microwaved earlier.

“Well, I’m certainly not doing anything for YOU after that bullcrap!”

“It’s ‘BULLSHIT,’ Steven! 

...Dammit! And here I thought we had a breakthrough…”

“But look on the bright side, Dave!” She was still chewing popcorn. 

“He’s started using the Lord’s name in vain more lately, that’s still something!”

“Yeah, but he was so fuckin’ close! He got to ‘motherf–’! He got to the F, Dee!”

“Why are you creeps all so invested in my speech habits!?”

Harry is the first child out of four to famous film director Harry Griffin Sr. ( Steven Spielberg fame ). He had always grew up around movies.

Going to movie premiers were just fun family activity for Harry growing up. He also loved to visit his father on set. He did get small background roles in a lot of his father's films.

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Road Rovers- “A Hair of the Dog That Bit You”

Road Rovers is one of those Kids WB! series that feels forgotten, released shortly after the block’s exciting original lineup (consisting of new episodes and already iconic repeats of Animaniacs, spin-off Pinky & the Brain, Freakazoid!, The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries and Earthworm Jim) but premiering just before Pokemon was gifted to the block and made Warner’s wacky comedies become irrelevant basically overnight. The show only had one season and made its way to Cartoon Network alongside Freakazoid!, but feels less important, probably due to Road Rovers having half as many episodes.

Now, I’m a child of the 90′s and this era of cartoons still matters to me. Like most people my age, Animaniacs and Tiny Toons were formative shows, but I remember enjoying both Freakazoid! and Road Rovers when they made their way to CN, but I recall enjoying the former a lot more when I rediscovered both series as an adult. Road Rovers was missing some of the wit that made Tom Ruegger’s other shows stand out. Maybe not having Steven Spielberg around to produce was what distinguished the show for the worst, or maybe the show can’t decide if it wants to be a parody of action cartoons of the time or just a sillier version of one.

Ah well, trying it again now shows some charms, and makes me feel a little nostalgic for when I was the weird kid who’d rather watch the less popular shows than Rugrats (which I did also like. I watch cartoons not owned or licensed by Warner, some times, I swear), and this is an entertaining episode. First, if you need a reminder, the Road Rovers are humanoid versions of some of the world leader’s pet dogs, like Hunter, a golden retriever owned by the president, or Colleen, a collie who belongs to the UK’s prime minister, who were turned from regular dogs into what are called “Canosapiens” who protect the world from evil and stuff.

In this one, the Rovers fight a pack of werewolves wrecking havoc in London, and while they fend them off, Exile, the Russian president’s siberian husky, is bit by one. He’s worried that he will turn into a werewolf, and the Rovers try to find a cure to protect him. However, there’s a change in course, as Collie ends up turning into a werewolf instead.

This has some clever moments and fun bits with dogs, all good boys and girls. Who could ask for more?

Creepshow: Season 3 will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on December 6 via RLJE Films. Based on George A. Romero’s 1982 horror anthology film, the Shudder original series has been renewed for a fourth season.

I have a dog! Her name is Laika and she's a Rough Collie. I love her and her long snoot so much.

I also have a cat! His name is Samblabiticus (Or Samb for short) and he's my son. Don't tell him he's adopted.

I have a few others pets like Steven the leopard gecko and Gav the Crestie. Love 'em all.

I draw a lot of himbos and whatnot, but sometimes you'll see me draw some other things. I'm excited to come to somewhere so much more mellow than Twitter... Was really taking a toll on my mental health. Anyway, have some art that I've done and pictures of my little guys. :)

Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog - Zoobotnik (Screenshots & Review)

Damn, it's been a while since I did one of these, hasn't it? I was missing this ol' goofball cartoon, and boy did I get a weird episode to return on!

This cool rabbit gal, Mildred, fares better on the Bechdel test than this episodes leading female character will...

The story starts off with Sonic and Tails zooming along, Sonic wanting to get his sneakers re-treaded. He knocks the leaves off some local trees, revealing their... undies? This must be foreshadowing (also it's...nice to know trees on Mobius wear underwear!). They soon hear a newspaper selling kid shouting about abductions,  and is skeptical at first, until he encounters a crowd of folks in a panic. One of them, Mildred, starts going on about her gal friend who dissapeared at a baseball game. Even as he is talking with the crowd, people start vanishing again- and sometimes leaving their underwear behind. The tree thing was foreshadowing after all! While Sonic is trying to make sense of the situation, even Tails ends up getting kidnapped! This pushes Sonic over the edge and really pisses him off, so he goes off to find his little buddy.

A dog-duck!

Katella, accompanied by her favorite music and her giant boobs. A Hannah Barbera cartoon is missing a character somewhere... In another location, we see a character who seems to a duck/dog hybrid walking along, which is neat and  a more creative character design than we usually get from background characters on the show. Unfortunately, the poor fellow is feeling spooked, and starts to run to wherever he's headed, before being captured by a giant huge-boobed woman who looks like she got lost on the way to an 80s Hannah Barbera action cartoon (seriously, she is weirdly out-of-place looking in this show. When I saw gifs of her and Robotnik on tumblr in the past, I figured it was something from an early conceptual version of the show). We find out that her name is Katella, and she is a huntress from outer space who likes to kidnap unique creatures from different planets and auction them off to zoos around the universe (kinda reminds me of the space zoo from Steven Universe). She seems to be a pretty tough gal, but later on she'll fail the Bechdel test pretty badly (I actually just recently found out the woman who made the Bechdel is a queer cartoonist! Pretty neat.) .

He installed his bathtub on the walkway of his throne room?!

I missed these two goofballs!

This reporter gal, Collie Chang, is based on a real-life news reporter called Collie Chung.

It looks like when the print shop was designed they made the building so small that they were forced to install the printing press outside. I bet someone got fired for this!

Coconuts, having witnessed this incident, runs to tell Robotnik that Katella has arrived on the planet, and Robotnik is very pleased to hear this as he could get her to eliminate Sonic from his life. At the same time, Sonic is being interviewed by newscasters about the development and then goes around putting missing Mobian posters on all sorts of things to help people find Tails. He even puts one on some guys butt!  He also asks around for help from a wise old man, an Inuit-looking fellow, and a big chubby dude in the jungle. Back at Robotnik's base, We see that Robotnik has invited Katella over for dinner, and has ordered Scratch and Grounder to clean up the place. When she arrives, she seems to be playing her own theme song on a portable record player she carries around, which was cute. As she barges in the door, Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts all seem to react to her about the same way Markiplier reacts to Lady Demitrescue  - two of them even turning themselves into literal door mats so she can step on them. Fetish cartoon!

Fe-tish car-toon....

I really don’t know what to make of when she turns into...this ....thing. Is she supposed to be shapeshifter? Is this supposed to be a visual gag representing that she’s attracted to someone and turned into a giant freaky heart head monster? When Katella makes it to Robotnik's throne room, she turns into a freaky giant heart thing that looks like some sort of Pac-Man monster, and immediately begins obsessing over Robotnik and wanting to marry him (there goes the Bechdel test!). She shows her affection by pummeling the hell out of Robontik and he's rather frightened by all the unwanted sexual advances, not to mention all the physical abuse. Eventually he catches his breath enough to talk to her about capturing Sonic, and she agrees to help him.

This hippo dude looks creepy...

Meanwhile Mildred is giving me Cuphead vibes here. I want her to get her own episode! It turns out that for all her skill at abducting people, Katella still has pretty terrible trap-setting skills. She makes an obviously-fake looking Tails doll tied to a tree stump, with visible trap mechanisms, and Sonic of course sees right through the trap, but lets himself get caught on purpose so he can be led to wherever Tails and the others are located. While being carted off to Robotnik’s lair, he overhears Katellas creepy demands for Robotnik to marry her without his consent, and starts plotting a scheme to take advantage of the situation. Once he's imprisoned with the others, Sonic cuts a hole in the floor so the others can escape, and stays behind with Tails to plot a way to spitefully torment Robotnik. Sonic and Tails have a real mean streak in this episode!

This gal has issues...

“Uh, what’s a wedding?”

Not too much later, Sonic and Tails show up in the room where Robotnik and Katella are to hurriedly help them get married. Scratch and Grounder are provided with Beat Man and Maid of honor outfits, and they're pretty adorable in this scene. :) Tails starts playing an organ in a fancy suit, looking like a dastardly little villian himself. Sonic is dressed as a justice of the peace, and there's some nice subtle humor as Sonic is talking - you can see his shadow moving about on its down, doing various funny gestures. Just as Katella is again strangling the poor Doctor, An unexpected character shows up  - Momma Robotnik! Tails is surprised to see her, finding out that Sonic called her to let her know what was going on, figuring she'd come and wreak even more havoc than Katella. Sure enough, she gets into  a brawl with Katella (whom briefly turns into the freaky heart shaped thing again), and even with her yelling at and hitting him, Robotnik is at first relieved that his Momma saved him from the rapey madwoman. Eventually Katella calls of the marriage herself, as she doesn't want Momma Robotnik for a mother-in-law. As she leaves and Momma scolds her son, Sonic and Tails watch the moon and congratulate themselves for making Robotniks day miserable. Feels quite mean-spirited, but considering all the terrible things Robontik does, I can at-least udnerstand the bitterness and malice these two kids would have towards him.

In the Sonic Says short, we see Tails trying to make friends with a squirrel in a tree. I know from experience that squirrels are adorable but also very evil and stupid (the little bastards like to run in front of my car and scare the shit out of me), so Sonic is right to warn Tails to be careful about touching wild or even tamed animals without permission or fair warning. I appreciate the considerate way Sonic words things - "you might scare the animal, and it could end up biting you trying to protect itself". Much better way to present this to kids than just saying things like "dogs are bad and dangerous" or something like that.

Watch out, Tails! Squirrels are jerks!

This episode was defintely a weird one. Katella unfortunately was yet another female character to have tired old sexist tropes tacked onto her, but the actions scenes with her were at-least fun and full of energy. there are some cute moments for Scratch and Grounder too, and it's always good to see more Momma Robotnik.  the wedding scene at the end also has some funny and cute moments. If you can look past the sexist stuff, this episode is fairly entertaining and certainly unique for Katellas strangely out of place design. Now I wonder if there's a rogue Aosth villain character roaming around in some old 80s He-Man episode or something...

If I get enough free time this week I should be able to do some more Sonic reviews before my work week starts up again. Stay tuned!
