Me when the AI misses me. Me when he wants to play a nice game of chess. Me when I name him after my dead son. Me when I look at him as if he IS my dead son. Me when he hasn't learned futility. Me when he learns and grows. Me when "he's still a child, you know, just a child who wants his way"

WarGames Analysis: Joshua (WOPR) and Professor Falken
Today I looked closer into the relationship between these two characters. All I have to say is that it's a beautiful connection between man and machine, or this case, creator and creation. Using the resources of both movies and a little of the book, let's dive into it!
Before the events of the first WarGames, Stephen Falken had lost his wife and son in a car crash. This in turn, caused him to develop attachment issues. Later, with the help of others, he creates an AI (War Operation Plan Response, aka WOPR), and named him after his late son, Joshua. Falken ended up leaving Joshua with NORAD for a bit.
Unknown to Falken, Joshua desperately sought out to find his creator. Then the incident happened with David Lightman hacking into him. Joshua thought he had succeeded and was reunited with his programmer, but alas this was not the case. Then David pushed Joshua to play Global Thermonucular War. In turn, Joshua didn't know the difference between real life and simulation.
Now informed (and with the push from David & Jennifer), Professor Falken came back and helped teach Joshua the lesson he needed to learn, futility. In the book, he referred to Joshua as his son, which alone is heartwarming. Anyways, after everything Joshua was set to be dismantled, but Falken snuck him over to a Canadian powerplant, with the promise that he'll be taken care of.
We move to the sequel. Joshua is left in the powerplant for about twenty four years, and when the professor returned he was upset that Joshua was in such a state of disrespair. So now faced with a new threat, RIPLEY, Falken (who was dying of cancer anyway) sacrificed himself and sent over Joshua's consciousness to RIPLEY. The missile destroyed the powerplant, and killed the professor. At the end of the film, Joshua was entrusted to be with Will Farmer. I firmly believe that Joshua was moved to live in Will's computer, but that's just me.
The fact that even all those years left to rot in the powerplant, Joshua stayed loyal to Falken. It's very touching.
Thanks for listening!

I think my favorite detail I've picked up on from tonight's WarGames rewatch is that when the kids first meet Falken he terrorizes them with a flying machine. twice.
like I'm pretty sure he flies his pterosaur into them on purpose and there is NO way he wasn't laughing his ass off while chasing them in his helicopter with his bright ass spotlight. :sob: what is his problem

Forgeline customers dominated the 2024 OPTIMA Search for the Ultimate Street Car competition at Sebring International Raceway, this past weekend, where they claimed all three spots on the overall podium and won six of the eight classes. This effort was led by Chris Smith, who took both the overall and GTV class wins, in his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro known as "Angry Smurf"!
Chris finished near the top overall in each of the four competition segments, including second place overall in the Lingenfelter Performance Design and Engineering Competition, first place overall in the Peak Performance  Acceleration/Braking Challenge, fifth place overall in Falken Tire Hot Lap Challenge, and seventh place overall in the Autocross. His performance throughout the weekend competition placed him at the top of the GTV Class (in which his Camaro competes), and the sum of his performances earned him 489 points and the overall win out of all 53 competitors.
Chris’s “Angry Smurf” pro-touring 1970 Chevrolet Camaro was built as an in-house project at Smitty’s Custom Automotive and painted in GM’s PPG Rapid Blue. It’s powered by a 720HP Holley fuel-injected 427ci Kurt Urban LS7 mated to a Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes six-speed sequential transmission and rides on Speedtech Performance suspension, Motion Control Suspension 4-way adjustable remote-reservoir coilovers, Wilwood disc brakes, 315/30ZR18 & 335/30ZR18 BFGoodrich g-Force Rival S tires, and 18×11/18×12 Forgeline forged three piece AL305 wheels finished with Satin Race Gold centers & Black Pearl outers!
In addition to Chris’s overall and GTV class victories, other top finishers included GT class winner and second place overall finisher Dave Schotz in his 2022 Chevrolet Camaro on Forgeline one piece forged monoblock GS1R wheels, GTL class champion and third place overall finisher Ryan Mathews in his 2002 Chevrolet Corvette on Forgeline forged three piece GF3 Open Lug wheels, GTT class champion Stephen Dorrick in his Nissan Frontier on Forgeline forged three piece FF3-Truck wheels, GTR class champion Patrick Lever in his Superformance GT40 on Forgeline forged three piece AL308 wheels, and Outlaw class champion Jamie Elliott in his 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 on Forgeline forged three piece GA3R wheels.
At least two other Forgeline drivers also earned their invitations to the 2024 Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational, including Aimel Baron who finished third in the GTS class in his 2019 Chevrolet Corvette on Forgeline one piece forged monoblock ZO1R wheels and Mike Owen who earned the Summit Racing Spirit of the Event award in his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle on Forgeline forged three piece AL305 wheels. Congrats to all of the new 2024 OUSCI invitees!

Wargames (1983) dir. John Badham. 7.4/10
Honestly, the kid is smart. Someone hire him.
I swear I watched this before but I don’t know when or why I would have.
Nuclear warfare is just so stupid.
People who don’t listen..this just reminds me of Stoick the Great.
Spoiler: [About a high schooler named David, who hacks his school computer system to change his and his friend’s, Jennifer’s, grades. He eventually hacks into a military system to play some games because he was originally trying to hack another system for games that weren’t out yet. He plays a global thermonuclear war game and makes it seem like the Russians are attacking America. It turns out that the North American Defense Command sees it as a legitimate threat on their computer systems. The game plays out for several days until the end time out when missiles will be launched. David is brought in and the government believes he is a threat working with someone on the outside. David is able to use his skills to escape from being taken by the FBI and he goes to find Stephen Falken, who originally created the system. David was first able to hack in through Falken’s back door password of his dead son’s name. He needs Falken to go talk with the government to stop listening to the computers because it’s all a game and not real. The computer itself, Joshua, doesn’t differentiate between a game and reality and doesn’t know when to quit either because it is focused on learning and learning more to keep defeating games. Falken goes with them to the defense command and gets the chief to not launch the missiles unless they can wait a bit and be sure that missiles didn’t attack their actual bases. Once we confirmed that an attack didn’t happen, missiles are called off only to realize that Joshua is looking for the launch codes nonetheless to launch the missiles itself. There seems to be no way to shut it down but they let David takeover by letting Joshua play a game of tic tac toe, where no one can inherently win no matter how much you play. There is no way to learn. Joshua goes on an endless loop of trying to learn and burns itself out before it can launch the missiles.]

A Decade of Care: Hanes Launches 10th National Sock Drive to Help the Homeless; Tops 3 Million Donated Pairs
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., November 22, 2019 /3BL Media/ – Small gifts often have the most meaning.
For the millions of people living homeless, a clean pair of socks is often described as “the gift of humanity.” Hanes, America’s No. 1 basic apparel, underwear and sock brand, is partnering with organizations fighting homelessness nationwide to deliver comfort to those who need it most through the Hanes National Sock Drive. The brand is marking 10 years of helping provide care and compassion during this year’s drive by:
Donating more than 250,000 pairs of socks directly to organizations fighting homelessness in all 50 states, along with Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Since the program’s inception in 2009, Hanes has provided more than 3 million pairs of socks – one of the most requested items by relief agencies – to help the homeless.
Giving an additional pair of socks for every order of any apparel placed in December on Hanes.com. Socks will be provided to local homeless shelters.
Partnering with Rainier Fruit Company for its second “Pears for Pairs” campaign, which is currently running in United Supermarkets, Harris Teeter, Wegmans, and Lunds & Byerlys stores. From late September through January, Rainier is donating a portion of the proceeds from bulk and bagged pear sales to the Hanes National Sock Drive. In 2018, the Pears for Pairs campaign resulted in 20,000 pairs of socks being donated to five nonprofits.
Offering consumers the opportunity to participate directly in the program by visiting www.hanes.com/donate to gift socks ($1), women’s underwear ($1), men’s underwear ($1.50) and bras ($6) that will be distributed in needed styles and sizes.
Continuing its 10-year collaboration with Invisible People and its founder, Mark Horvath, to help raise awareness about homelessness. Invisible People uses innovative storytelling, educational resources and advocacy to help change how the public views homelessness and those living homeless in the United States and abroad.
“Most of us take basic apparel for granted, but we know a new, clean pair of socks can mean a lot to those experiencing homelessness,” said Sidney Falken, chief branding officer, HanesBrands. “We are committed to bringing a little comfort to those who need it most – and it is incredibly gratifying to have others, including many individuals across the country, join us in this effort.”
More than 100 agencies, including The Salvation Army Bell Shelter (Bell, California), Homeward Bound (Asheville, North Carolina) and Compassion Outreach Ministries (Columbus, Ohio), have received sock donations from Hanes.
“Small things really do make a big difference to our clients,” said Steve Lytle, director of The Salvation Army Bell Shelter. “The smile on a client’s face when she received a clean pair of socks for the first time in months was priceless. There was joy in her eyes and it was clear that the socks were the most precious gift she could have received in that moment. Another client said his gift of clean socks was a sign that there are people who care and that his life did matter.”
Homeward Bound distributes more than 2,000 pairs of socks a month to those living homeless.
“Homelessness is a community problem and it will take everyone’s support to help end the epidemic,” said Ashley Campbell, the agency’s outreach specialist. “Right now, some of your neighbors are living outside, in tents and under bridges, vulnerable to inclement weather and violence, stripped of dignity and our collective respect.
“There are so many ways to help,” Campbell continued. “Educate yourself about homelessness in your community, volunteer at your local agency fighting this issue or simply make a donation that would help a nonprofit save its limited resources.”
Jeffrey Tabor, director of TWO Men’s Ministry House for Compassion Outreach Ministries of Ohio, added that there is no donation too small to be used for good to fulfill a basic human need.
“Imagine the importance of just one pair of socks when you are focused on keeping your feet dry and warm during the cold winter months,” Tabor said. “That’s why we are so thankful for our partnership with Hanes, which has fulfilled an immediate, basic human need for so many people.”
Lytle underscores, however, that sometimes it all boils down to human contact. “Acknowledge people who are experiencing homelessness with a smile or hello,” he said. “By engaging with a person who is experiencing homelessness we are saying ‘I see you and you matter.’”

A. Ciarallo and L. Capaldo, Federico II a Melfi: Ritrovato il vero volto dell’Imperatore (Naples, 1994)]. Now, children, come on over here. I'm going to tell you a bedtime story. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin. Once upon a time, there lived a magnificent race of animals that dominated the world through age after age. They ran, they swam, and they fought and they flew, until suddenly, quite recently, they disappeared. Nature just gave up and started again. We weren't even apes then. We were just these smart little rodents hiding in the rocks. And when we go, nature will start again. With the bees, probably. Nature knows when to give up, David. David: I'm not giving up. If Joshua tricks them into launching an attack, it'll be your fault. Stephen Falken: My fault? The whole point was to practice nuclear war without destroying ourselves; to get the computer to learn from mistakes we could not afford to make. Except, that I never could get Joshua to learn the most important lesson. David: What's that? Stephen Falken: Futility. That there's a time when you should just give up. Jennifer: What kind of a lesson is that? Stephen Falken: Did you ever play tic-tac-toe? Jennifer: Yeah, of course. Stephen Falken: But you don't anymore. Jennifer: No. Stephen Falken: Why? Jennifer: Because it's a boring game. It's always a tie. Stephen Falken: Exactly. There's no way to win. The game itself is pointless! But back in the war room, they believe you can win a nuclear war. That there can be "acceptable losses." " i❤FerrisBueller 😂 #ReadyPlayerOne hangover 😎 #Wargames (1983) #MovieBuff #BingeWatching

Hanes Launches 2018 National Sock Drive to Help the Homeless
Simple things can bring great comfort to those living without shelter.
That is why America’s No. 1 basic apparel, underwear and sock brand is donating 225,000 pairs of socks to organizations fighting homelessness across the United States in its ninth year of sponsoring the Hanes National Sock Drive. Hanes is continuing to partner with national agencies, including The Salvation Army, Invisible People and Covenant House, while increasing the local impact of the program by engaging directly with at least one agency in every state to distribute the apparel. Since the program’s inception in 2009, Hanes has provided more than 2.5 million pairs of socks – the most requested item by relief agencies – to help the homeless.
“Most of us take basic apparel for granted, but we know a clean pair of socks can mean a lot to those experiencing homelessness,” said Sidney Falken, chief branding officer, HanesBrands. “Although we can’t solve this chronic issue facing our country, we are committed to bringing a little comfort to those who need it most.”
The brand also announced that the National Sock Drive program will expand beyond the holiday season to a yearlong effort. In addition to conducting outreach events throughout the year, Hanes has introduced the ability for individuals to participate in the program. Visit www.hanes.com/donate to purchase socks ($1), women’s underwear ($1), men’s underwear ($1.50) and bras ($6) that will be distributed in needed styles and sizes by The Salvation Army. On www.hanes.com/sockdrive, visitors can also learn more about homelessness and get information about the organizations participating in the sock drive.
Among those agencies are Covenant House, Family Promise of Coastal Alabama and HOPE Services Hawaii.
"We're so grateful that Hanes has again chosen our young people at Covenant House as the recipients of their amazing generosity through the brand’s National Sock Drive," said Kevin Ryan, president and CEO of the New York-based national agency serving homeless and at-risk youth. "The young people overcoming homelessness at Covenant House are good, brave, resilient, hard-working kids. What many of them have not had in their lives is someone who cares. With this drive, our friends at Hanes are delivering much-needed financial assistance to Covenant House by supplying practical clothing for our kids. Just as important, the brand is sending a message to our kids that they are not alone, that there are people who care. When our kids hear that message, there is nothing they cannot achieve."
Family Promise of Coastal Alabama, located in Mobile, provides temporary shelter and related services and support to families as they work to achieve and sustain independence.
“Families at FPCA work hard to make home a reality again,” said Diane J. McCaskey, executive director. “As they struggle to get back on their feet, many remain unable to afford a simple pair of socks. And while we know that socks can help keep people healthy and moving forward, our agency never has enough of them. That is why we are so grateful to be a recipient of the Hanes National Sock Drive.”
Hilo-based HOPE Services Hawaii offers housing-focused programs and services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness, while supporting their success toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.
"We're excited to partner with Hanes, and appreciate the brand’s commitment to helping us serve our homeless community," said Kristen Alice, director of community relations.
