The Dakota 38 [+ 2], Mankato, Friday, December 26, 1862 [Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, MN]
(images: excerpts from A Detailed Account of the Massacre by the Dakota Indians of Minnesota in 1862, Marion P. Satterlee, Minneapolis, MN, 1923, pp. 94-95. Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
«On November 8, after completing harried trials of Dakota prisoners taken after their surrender at Camp Release, Henry Sibley presented the list of 303 condemned Dakota men to the US government. Two days later, President Lincoln wired Gen. John Pope, Sibley’s superior: "Please forward, as soon as possible, the full and complete record of these convictions." Lincoln and his lawyers then reviewed the trial transcripts of all 303 men. "Anxious to not act with so much clemency as to encourage another outbreak on one hand," Lincoln explained to the US Senate, "nor with so much severity as to be real cruelty on the other, I ordered a careful examination of the records of the trials to be made, in view of first ordering the execution of such as had been proved guilty of violating females." When only two men were found guilty of rape, Lincoln expanded the criteria to include those who had participated in "massacres" of civilians rather than "battles." He then made his final decision, and forwarded a list of 39 names to Sibley. Ordered that of the Indians and Half-breeds sentenced to be hanged by the military commission, composed of Colonel Crooks, Lt. Colonel Marshall, Captain Grant, Captain Bailey, and Lieutenant Olin, and lately sitting in Minnesota, you cause to be executed on Friday the nineteenth day of December, instant, the following names, to wit [39 names listed by case number of record: cases 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 19, 22, 24, 35, 67, 68, 69, 70, 96, 115, 121, 138, 155, 170, 175, 178, 210, 225, 254, 264, 279, 318, 327, 333, 342, 359, 373, 377, 382, 383]. The other condemned prisoners you will hold subject to further orders, taking care that they neither escape, nor are subjected to any unlawful violence. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States». – Minnesota Historical Society

Phryne’s St. Paul
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 1840’s, the Wabasha Street Caves were born as silica mines.
During prohibition, enterprising owners opened a speakeasy which later became Castle Royal, a glamorous and completely subterranean nightclub. Ordinary citizens danced to the music of Cab Calloway while rubbing elbows with notorious gangsters like John Dillinger.
Rumors of the after hours murder of three Chicago area gangsters still persist.
Today the Wabasha Street Caves are open for tours and Thursday night swing dancing.
This summer, they’ll be home to an exclusive Saturday event during Miss Fisher Con ’23!

St. Paul cop wont face criminal charges in deadly shooting
ST. PAUL (MN) — The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office has announced that it will not be filing criminal charges for the fatal police shooting of Howard Peter Holliday Johnson, which occurred on December 5, 2022. Ramsey County prosecutors reviewed the investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and concluded that St. Paul police sergeant Cody Blanshan’s use of deadly force was legal under Minnesota law. In an email sent to his staff, John Choi of the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office said that Sergeant Blanshan responded to a report about a domestic violence as described in your memo. Your memorandum concludes, in the end, that the use by Sergeant Blanshan of deadly force was justified under Minnesota Law. I agree with the conclusion you reached and commend the thoroughness of your analysis of the evidence collected by BCA investigators. “I also appreciate that Jeff Noble was retained as a police force expert to help us and the public better understand the circumstances surrounding this officer-involved fatality, including the tactics used by responding officers.” Just days after the shooting, St. Paul Police released the body camera footage. Choi requested that BCA release “all public data” from this investigation as quickly as possible. BCA reports that St. Paul Police responded to Earl Street near Hudson Road shortly after 6 pm on Monday to reports of domestic violence. Investigators reported that the 911 caller said Johnson was armed and that officers had formed a perimeter at the scene. A woman left a store on Hudson Road at the same time and got in her car. The BCA reported that Johnson pointed a gun towards the woman’s vehicle as she started driving away. Blanshan was seated in a squad vehicle nearby, as part of the perimeter. According to the video, Blanshan told his radio “He’s there.” “He is walking eastbound.” He’s got the gun in his hand. He’s pointing at a vehicle, he is trying to carjack. Investigators claim that Blanshan then hit Johnson with his squad car, knocking him down. “Don’t do it!” Johnson shouts. Johnson got up and fired at Blanshan. He was killed. Blanshan did not suffer any injuries. Investigators claim that officers handcuffed Johnson before EMS arrived and administered first aid. He was taken to Regions Hospital where he later died. BCA agents reported finding a Glock Pistol in.45 calibre and three bullet casings of.45 calibre at the scene. The BCA also said that they found 10 9 millimeter cartridge cases, which “could be consistent with the department handgun Blanshan used.” Source by [author_name]

Going on the St. Paul Gangster Tour for my birthday!
Tumblr media
I was trying to figure out what to do for my 62nd birthday next month (no way I’m that fuckin old), and I remembered this!  It’s perfect as research for a kids book I’m working on, which includes the gangsters that ran around free in the 20s and 30s in St. Paul, MN.
The St. Paul Gangster Tour:
“The Original and best Saint Paul Gangster Tour (2 hours by Bus in comfort) is the only tour that starts at the historic Castle Royal Gangsters nightclub, preserved today as the Wabasha Street Caves. The Tour reveals why Saint Paul was a center for bootlegging operations and criminal activities during the 1930's prohibition era. Tour route covers all the gangster sights in the entire 5 miles radius of St. Paul where the gangsters lived it up as they planned and executed some of the most notorious crimes ever perpetrated in the upper Midwest. Notorious gangsters included John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, "Machine Gun" Kelly, Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, Fred Barker, Arthur "Doc" Barker, and Ma Barker. Your Guide will be a nefarious gangster hood or his moll, who will be informative and humorous. Tour will take you past the most infamous gangster hideouts and the famous nightclubs where many gangsters spent time socializing with the public. Explore with us the elusive sites of kidnappings, and gun battles associated with the 1930's gangsters.”
