Small Miracles
Beth Greene is not dead. Though it is not for a lack of trying.
After eight long years spent in the CRM's grasp, struggling to find reasons to continue surviving, Beth finally finds her reason: Rick and Daryl are alive, and they are closer than she ever could've guessed. Now she must take advantage of her only opportunity to escape and track them down.
Along the way, she revisits all of the places that changed her into who she has become. And she is forced to remember who she truly is at heart despite how unrecognizable she finds herself.
But she has an unexpected ally along for the journey. Just the same as her, he is somewhat of a living miracle. Except he's no longer living... he's a walker.
[Moonshine Awards 2023 Third Place Winner for Best WIP ZA, and Second Place Winner for Best WIP Reunion/Fix It!]
Chapter 21 // Part 13: The Car
Beth presses her foot on the gas pedal and drives out of the garage, watching in the rearview mirror as Yesenia and Elba wave goodbye. She feels tears pooling in her eyes and quickly blinks them back. It never ceases to amaze her how, in this new world, such strong and meaningful bonds can be formed in such short amounts of time. As she drives down the road and toward the gate, which is slowly sliding open, Mae leans out the passenger window and waves to Yesenia, Elba, and Guillermo. And then they are pulling out of the gate and onto the cracked street outside of Nuevo Atlanta.  The morning sun is slowly rising higher into the sky, casting a stark brightness across everything. Beth speeds through the streets until they reach the city limits and a sign that says they are leaving Atlanta. Even as she knows they are entering unknown territory and even more unknown dangers, she can’t help feeling as though a weight has been lifted from her shoulders: she has her weapons back, a car, and a refreshed store of supplies. Not to mention, she’s had two whole days of good food and real rest. She leaves both Grady and Nuevo Atlanta in the rearview mirror. The wind rushes in through the open windows, and as they reach the open, desolate freeway, Mae lets out a wild laugh. She turns to Beth with a grin that is slowly fading and turning to a frown of worry with every mile they put between themselves and the sight of the Atlanta skyline. “Beth.” “Yeah?” “Do you… do you think we’ll make it? Like, really make it?” Beth glances in the rearview mirror to catch Gale’s milky white eyes. They exchange a discreet smirk. “We already did.”

Christmas Carols:
I'll Be Home For Christmas by @mistressheroine
Beth Greene had returned from the dead a little over three months ago. Even though the snow is falling over Alexandria, Daryl Dixon can't help but notice he rarely sees her without her grey beanie sat firmly on her head. He thinks he knows why, and decides it's time to make sure she knows just how much she means to him. Written for Ultimate Bethyl Fic List holiday prompts for BHF23. This one is for "Christmas Carols".

The Accidental Christmas by @gneebee
It should have been a simple twenty mile drive home, but trouble started when Beth made a wrong turn and found herself lost. Bad went to worse when she swerved to miss a Doe and her Fawn, and now she finds herself with her car in a ditch in the middle of nowhere. Her only hope is to try and make it on foot back to the roadhouse she passed a mile or two back.
Merry Christmas! We can't wait to see what you come up with for the New Year prompts!

These are a little bit different from my usual style of photo editing, but it was something that was inspired by the Bethyl fic In Toto Corde by SquishyCool @im-immortal, which can be found here.
This fic...wow...so tragic but so beautifully written...while reading it, it played out in my head with the most vivid imagery, this star-crossed couple fighting for love, fighting for life...and sacrificing for that love. It haunts me in the best way possible.
I don’t know if I did it justice, but I was compelled to create something for it. I couldn’t decide if I liked bloodier Daryl better or not, so I thought, why not post both versions.
Seriously, go read this story, but prepare your heart.

Y’ALL!!
If you’re looking for a Daryl fic... read Risk it All by SquishyCool on AO3. It’s a modern day Bethyl and yes I’m biased because I love Bethyl but even if you don’t... holy hell is it HOT! Because it’s modern day, it’s easy to read it as an OC if you so please too, at least for me.
But seriously... You want horny Daryl, age difference, sexting/exchanging photos, taboo, smut GOODNESS then this is fic for you.

Chapter 20 // Part 12: Nuevo Atlanta II
She can see everything from up here. The building is just tall enough to overlook the entire community, as well as the skyline of Atlanta itself. And just as Elba said, it’s a perfect spot for stargazing. For thinking. For breathing. Beth steps to the edge and gazes out at the community of Nuevo Atlanta, able to see countless windows and shadowy forms. If she looks further, she can see the top of Grady in the distance. She sits herself carefully on the edge, feet dangling, and just looks. Just thinks. Just breathes. She recalls the letter from Edwards, squinting and imagining that she can see where the helicopter picked him up and took him away. It must’ve been the same spot where they picked her up and took her away. And after her, they took Shepherd. Where is Amanda now, she wonders? Is she still with the CRM? Did they make her a soldier? If Beth had stayed a soldier, would it have been possible that she and Shepherd would’ve been reunited? She’s not sure that she likes to think about that prospect. She squints and gazes further into the distance, imagining that she can see the border of Georgia along the dark horizon. Imagining what she may find waiting for her. She wonders what Daryl is doing right now. Is he sleeping in a clean, warm bed in his safe community in Virginia? Is Rick sleeping in his own bed just next door to Daryl? She knows they wouldn’t stay too far apart from one another, not even in a safe place. They are brothers—not by blood, but by circumstance and, most importantly, choice. Even after all these years, she thinks they’d prefer to stay close. Just in case. Now she’s imagining the damn near impossible: the future. A future where she and Mae both make it to Alexandria. And she already knows that she won’t want to be more than a few yards away from Mae at any given time. She’ll want to be able to step outside and look over and see Mae sitting on the porch next door, drinking coffee and reading a book in the morning sunlight. If Maggie is there—if she and Glenn are there—will they let Beth live with them? She’d like to live with her sister again. It’s been so long. It would make it feel more like home. But what about Daryl? Would he want to share a home with her? Is there a world where it’s possible for Beth to live in one house with Daryl, for Glenn and Maggie to live in the one next door, and for Mae to live in the one on the other side? Then Beth would have all the people she cares about most right within reach. She would finally feel safe. Really, truly safe. Or would she rather live next to the graveyard in Alexandria? Closest to the people she relates to most? She pushes that thought away just as quickly as it comes. She tilts her head skyward and gazes up at the vast stars. The crescent moon. The endless black sky. It resembles a graveyard, she thinks. All dead stars casting their final light, leaving pinpoint marks in the darkness of the abyss. She takes a deep breath of fresh night air, filling her lungs with it and reminding herself that she is alive. She is alive. She is alive. She is alive. And for just a brief moment, she wonders if it’s possible that Daryl is gazing up at the same sky and thinking the same thing.

Chapter 18 // Part 10: Georgia Institute of Technology
“Hola, güera,” he finally greets, speaking slowly and with a menacing tone. Beth blinks and slowly shakes her head. One of the men steps forward and rips the duct tape from her mouth with no care. She’s pretty sure it rips away all of the hair from her upper lip. She hisses in pain and turns her head away for a brief moment, stifling the sting as her eyes water. She glances from Fur Coat to his guards, and then to the men who brought her here, before finally craning her neck and looking back at the woman who spoke English earlier. But the woman retains a stoic face, hands gripped tightly around the rifle she keeps at her front, refusing to meet Beth’s eyes. Beth turns back to Fur Coat sitting upon his throne and waits. He raises his eyebrows expectantly. “Hola, güera,” he repeats slower, his tone sharper. Then he asks her a question, but she cannot understand it. Her throat goes dry. She swallows hard before responding, “No habla Español. Uh—señor.”

Chapter 15 // Part 8: Terminus
Mae frowns, glancing down at the lifeless walker before settling her gaze on Beth again. “Dude… you went away for a minute there. What happened? D’you…” Realization dawns on her face and she shoots the walker another look. “D’you recognize this person?” Beth swallows hard and feels the sting of bile in her throat and on the back of her tongue. “They remembered these things were people… before all this. They didn’t let it change them in the end. Don’t you think that’s beautiful?” She doesn’t respond. She gently pushes Mae aside and gets on her knees beside the walker, pushing him over until he’s flat on his back. She brushes aside his bangs with the tips of her fingers and stares down at his face, inspecting every inch of the decrepit flesh. As she does so, Mae stands up and backs away a couple of feet, giving Beth some breathing room and watching silently. After a solid minute of inspection, Beth heaves a sigh of relief. “It’s not him,” she says quietly. Then logic kicks in. Of course it’s not him. Daryl is alive. He is the only Daryl Dixon that would be listed alongside Rick Grimes. He is the only Daryl Dixon living in a community called Alexandria. He is the only Daryl Dixon who could’ve survived not only The Turn, but the destruction of the CDC, the fall of the farm, the winter on the road, the various runs for supplies, the devastating flu, the attack from Woodbury, the prison’s fall, the funeral home, the road once again, Grady, Terminus, and whatever else came after. Very simply, he is the only Daryl Dixon. He does not die. Beth suddenly feels very embarrassed. Very stupid. Very… weak. How had the sight of one familiar poncho hit her so hard that she was rendered incapacitated? All the same, she cannot stop staring at it. This poncho from another life. The only thing in this place that still remains of her family. The only piece of evidence that proves they were here, they survived, and they made it out.  Or at least Rick and Daryl made it out, she reminds herself. She runs her fingers over the stiff, coarse fabric. She wishes she could lean down and smell it—she wishes so badly that it might still hold the scent of the man she hasn’t seen in eight long years. But she knows that it has been cloaked over this walker for so long, drenched in so much blood and death, that all it smells like is rotting flesh. If it were salvageable, she would pull it off this corpse and take it with her. She would wear it, and she would not take it off until she could return it to its rightful owner.  Yet all she can do is wish. Some things, she thinks, never really change. Mae asks softly, “Was that his poncho?” Beth swallows past a thick and vile knot in her throat. She wipes away tears with the back of her clean hand. Then she opens her mouth to respond, turning her head to look at Mae. But the words catch and fall away as soon as she sees the three walkers shambling up silently behind Mae. “Mae!” She manages to cry out, jumping to her feet and wielding her knife just as Mae begins to turn around.  But it is seconds too late.

2023 Writing Wrap-Up
I'm a little late this time around since it's already 2024, but I haven't done a writing wrap-up since 2021 and I thought it would be fun to bring back!
So this year, I was on quite a roll for the first half of the year. And then July rolled around and I started slowing down until it came to a screeching halt. Not sure what happened. Maybe it's my ADHD and constantly shifting hyper-fixations to blame. But I gradually managed to come back around just in time to post something for Christmas, which I'm still working on finishing. However, my hiatus doesn't take away the pride I still have for what I was able to write during the year. And I look forward to writing more in 2024! So here's all I managed to finish/get a good start on and post during 2023.
Tumblr media
A Kiss For A Drink: 6,740 words; one-shot I actually started writing this back in 2020 or 2021, intended to be posted on Valentine's Day. And then I got a point where I couldn't finish it and let it sit for about 2 years. I finally came back with some inspiration and motivation and finished it just in time to post for Valentine's Day 2023! I'm really happy with how it came out. It was a fun idea that turned into a fun fic with a few laughs included, even if it is one of my least-viewed fics lol I had fun writing it too, which is all that really matters!
Tumblr media
Lunacy Fringe: 62,690 words; 8/8 chapters To say this fic suddenly came out of nowhere would be an understatement. I literally got inspired out of the blue while listening to an episode of the Therapy Gecko podcast and the next thing I knew, I was balls deep in a psychological thriller. I actually managed to write it in just over a month or so!! Which is really incredible for me, especially considering I didn't step away from it at all or lose inspiration before it was finished. I'm really proud of how it turned out, and I haven't really told anyone, but I am working on converting it into an original story and possibly self-publishing. It could end up being my very first original novel :) the feedback I got was far more positive than I'd expected, especially considering how I portrayed Beth. I'm overall so so happy with how it turned out!!
Tumblr media
Longer Than A Heartbeat: 157,289 words; 29/29 chapters Now this... this fic is one of my proudest pieces by far. I'll never get over how happy I am with how it turned out, and how I was actually able to finish it. For the last few years, every time I rewatched "28 Days Later," I couldn't stop thinking about how it would make such a good Bethyl fic, and how I wanted to convert it into a Bethyl fic that included Rick and Judith. I finally did it!! Technically, I wrote it in 2022, but I didn't completely finish it and post it until 2023. When I say I write for myself... this fic really proves it, because I go back and read chapters from it all the time just because it's so fun and I love how I wrote it. I was also pleasantly surprised by the reception and how people who hadn't ever watched "28 Days Later" enjoyed it! Not to mention, @boltthrutheheart made some incredible custom manips for me that I can never get over!!
Tumblr media
hot girl summer (playing by the rules); 167k+ words, 16/30 chapters Ah yes, here she is... the companion piece to the first 3 fics of "in for a penny, in for a pound" that I've been planning/contemplating ever since I did that first fic from Beth's POV for the series. I always wanted to show Beth's POV for all the major moments in the series, and then once I got started, I figured why not go all in and just do her POV for the entirety of the series thus far? It gives a little more insight into how she's feeling, why she does the things she does and says the things she says, and we also get to see exactly what she was doing all those times that Daryl couldn't help wondering about her (because I already knew in my head, but I thought it might be fun to share with everyone else). I also thought it would make the set-up for the next fic a little better, so we could try and understand Beth's motivations better and where she's at in her head. Of course, I got pretty into it and then hit a speed bump and then suddenly, lost all ability to write. It'll come back soon, though. I can't wait to finish this fic and move on to the next in the series, and eventually conclude Beth and Daryl's tumultuous journey in this fun little AU.
Tumblr media
Small Miracles; 39k+ words, 6/10 chapters This is the fic that finally pushed me back into being able to write. I had no plans of writing for BHF 2023, and then I suddenly had this strike of inspiration for a very weird idea and decided to go with it and try and finish it in time to post for Christmas. I did manage to finish about 1/3rd of the fic in time, but I'm still writing it and haven't lost motivation yet, so that's a good sign! It's also just really fun and kind of cathartic to do a new exploration of Beth's journey through the eyes of an older Beth who survived Grady, with that fun little supernatural twist added to it. I can't wait to finish this one, because I've had a lot of fun writing it and really look forward to seeing what people think of her entire journey and the way it will conclude.
To everyone who's read my fics, left feedback, kudos, bookmarks, or even helped me bounce ideas off and come up with plans for fics... thank you so much! I appreciate everyone in this little fandom so, so much. Y'all mean the world to me, and I am so grateful that we have this wonderful community in our own little corner of the internet. Happy New Year to you all, and I hope 2024 brings you nothing but blessings!

Chapter 17 // Part 9: Grady Memorial Hospital
There is still plenty of evidence of the mass bombings that occurred right after The Turn, but more than that, there is evidence of time and weather eating away at everything. Nature is reclaiming what has been abandoned by humans. The once-pristine buildings are now covered in sprawling ivy and patches of moss, the neatly-manicured parks and lawns are overgrown and flowing out into the streets. There are flowers and lush green plants everywhere. The trees have grown taller, larger, more formidable than ever before. Strange fungi sprout up in even stranger places. Birds fly overhead, flocking from one tree to the next, making nests in the ledges of shattered windows and calling out to one another. Beth spots stray cats and wild dogs darting from one dark place to another, no longer accustomed to the presence of living humans and wary of the very sound, hiding away as soon as she rounds a corner or takes a step in their direction. There are field mice, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, and even deer in places where, a decade ago, they would’ve never dared tread. At one point, Mae stops and lets out a little gasp. Beth whips her head around, expecting the worst, but only finds Mae turning to her with a wide smile on her face. She holds out one hand and Beth sees multiple ladybugs crawling across her skin from where she reached into an overgrown patch of leaves stretching out from the shattered window of a convenience store.  “Look at ‘em!” Mae whispers loudly, her eyes filled with wonder as she watches the ladybugs crawl up and around her wrist and lower arm, some of them getting caught on the edges of her long sleeve. Beth feels something twist inside her chest. A memory flashes through her mind very briefly: a single ladybug settled on a leaf, crawling onto her finger as she patiently waited and gazed at it with a dream-like wonder. The first thing to bring a smile to her face in many days. Gale says, “A sign of good luck.” Mae carefully brushes the insects off her skin and back to the leaves they occupied. “Let’s hope so.” Beth doesn’t say anything, but she most certainly agrees. Only a couple of hours after noon, with the sun high in the sky and beating down upon them, they reach Grady Memorial Hospital. Beth stands in the middle of the street and stares up at the burnt-out shell of what was once a grand building. She does not dare circle around to the other side, already well aware of what awaits her there: the various abandoned cars, one of which she had been laid to rest in by her own family. She doesn’t even know if that car is still there. She doesn’t want to know.

Chapter 19 // Part 11: Nuevo Atlanta
"It is no longer just the old campus of a college, but an entirely new town. We are spreading out more every year. We have already reclaimed four blocks of the city, and we are working to reclaim more. It has become our territory, our property, our home. We’ve had twenty-three live births this year alone, and many more over the last eight years.” Twenty-three living, crying babies who require food and attention and safety, Beth thinks. She exhales a breath of disbelief. “How many people live here now?” Yesenia shrugs casually. “Over four-thousand, give or take. We are due for another census before the new year.” It’s like a punch to the gut. Beth stops in her tracks and looks around with a newfound sense of realization. This place had appeared big, and it is clearly prospering, but to think that over 4,000 living people are residing here? That’s unspeakable when it comes to the expectations of the CRM.  Populations like this simply do not exist outside of the Civic Republic and the Hidden City.  “What-why are you not listed on the map?” She asks, settling her gaze on Yesenia, who has also stopped and turned around to meet Beth’s eyes. Yesenia smiles coyly. “That is another story, mija. I cannot tell it properly on my own.” She gestures for Beth to follow as she begins leading the way forward. “Come. We should meet with El Concejo. They are expecting you.”

Chapter 13 // Part 7: The Train Tracks
They stop only for a moment, just long enough to find the familiar headstone that Beth so distantly recalls amongst the overgrown grass and wildflowers. She yanks away crawling ivy and small patches of moss to reveal the inscription: Beloved Father. And then she stands back and simply gazes upon it, shutting her eyes and trying to remember how it felt to hold Daryl’s hand. Trying to imagine how it might feel now, with her hands just as callused and scarred as his own. Yet still warm. Still warm and alive and loving. When she opens her eyes again, she sees Mae kneeling and gently picking a handful of yellow wildflowers, their petals wilting under the weight of raindrops. Then she places them with tender care atop the headstone and steps back to admire the sight. It brings a sad smile to Beth’s face. Mae turns her head and catches Beth’s eye before she whispers out, “For my dad, too. If that’s okay.” “Of course. For both our dads… and everyone else.” They let a respectful silence of remembrance fall between them. But it is broken all too soon by the distant groans of walkers shambling through the woods in their direction. “There’s more on the way behind ‘em,” Gale says quietly. “The closer ya stick to me though, the easier they’ll lose our trail.” Beth nods. There is no time left for lingering on the past. There is only the future. “Let’s move.”
