Hit Russian author, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, as a Christmas gift, gave me a chapter he scrapped while writing The Possessed and it is now my sole duty to share it with the world

Dostoyevsky’s Demons, The Devils, or, The Possessed.
Less may have gone wrong if Pyotr Verkhovensky and Nikolai Stavrogin would have simply kissed.

KIrillov and shatov
(send me blorbos for bingo!)
Tumblr media
justification:
Yeah. yall expected this
devils could have entirely been just kirillov doing his lil stretches and rambling about god-man and man-god and i would've absolutely eaten it up.
ticked the "has done nothing wrong (is a war criminal)" box bc TECHNICALLY he did cover up a murder. however he is also probably the nicest character too (and outside of tumblr ppl tend to forget that kindness hence the fandom box)
i'd put him in a wood chipper because i think he'd want me to
i can't fix him myself but i could give him a copy of the fall or the myth of sisyphus by camus and THAT would absolutely fix him
"need him in a way that is concerning to my well being" not biblically just. i am so obsessed with his character it is a health hazard
also pretty privilege. why do they talk about his face so much
Tumblr media
justification:
him punching stavrogin in the face is fucking iconic and i acknowledge that me cheering that on would probably make him worse
we needed more elaboration on america bc him and kirillov as foils (especially in faith) is really good and i want More. i need to reread
honestly i feel like there's not a single character who doesn't tick the "done nothing wrong (is a war criminal)" box in devils
and the "complex and well written. would skin irl" box. kirillov barely escaped bc he's such an introvert and i have some engineering buddies but i would hate all the rest of these dudes irl because they're all polisci bros. sorry
i actually didn't really care about him that much at first but his progression in the story was fucking sick and he very much grew on me

People sometime assume that Dostoevsky's work is serious stuff because of its dark and insightful themes but that hoe Stravrogin just kissed this woman in front of her husband and then bit the governors ear like RIP Dostoevsky you would have loved trashy reality tv

Ive been thinking about Demons today and reminded myself that I once calculated (cause I don't think it was explicitly mentioned in the novel?) that the plot begins around 1866. A very short time before that, in 1861, serfdom was abolished in Russia, which is for example how Shatov could even begin studying, having been by birth a serf. I cannot underline this hard enough - Daria and Ivan's father was literally owned by Barbara Petrovna, like an object. We have no proof to think she was in any way worse towards her serfs than towards other people, in fact we have proof to the contrary by some of her qualities or the fact she as well as adopted Daria and took care of Shatov when he really needed it. The important thing about it is, however, something else:
Stavrogin grew up in a reality where he could expect to inherit people, actual people, from his parents. If the abolishement did not proceed, he would in the future own Shatov and Dasha and it was snatched from him right at the edge of adulthood. In this light the fact that he sneaked in through a back door to posses both siblings is even more sinister than it could have appeared before.
Lands in Russia were described by how many people (serfs) lived there, they were tied to the land, could be sold or inherited etc. They were called simply "souls". Stavrogin then grew up expecting to one day come into literal physical possession of the souls of the siblings, and when it was clear he would not, he did what was in his power to actually steal these souls - quite literally, and he was successful in that.

So uhh,,, many people from here saw art work made by @mohich of Stav as vampires
many people from discord know that I have been hyperfixated on the idea of demons!vampire au
So I made some art 😎
Tumblr media
I will make more, soon Pyotr
But I’ll explain the more or less changes in characters made for the au
Shatov is a werewolf based on Ethiopian wolf, mostly because of the fur colour
Kirillov a vampire based on flying fox/Pteropus
Dasha is an alchemist
And Liza is a monster hunter BUT - she is more keen on trying to be civil and resolves to killing only in most dangerous situations
