Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: An Opinion
So. This anime. Lots of opinions on it. From those that know it exists at least. I have my own that I'd like to share.
I don't remember how I found it. Feel like maybe my brother told me about it but I'm not certain. All I know is how it made me feel. And it was AMAZING.
Now normally I don't like zombie things. I get grossed out easily and scared easily and zombies tend to be too much for me. This was the first time I found zombies palatable and honestly actually kinda cool. It shocked me, but more than anything I found the world and the characters it was building up were the things that drew me in most and kept me hooked the whole way.
To this day it's one of my favorite shows ever. Probably my favorite anime. I know a lot of people don't see it that way. So it got me wondering; why? Why don't people like it like I do?
So here's what I decided to do; I'm going to go through and rewatch the entire series of Kabaneri, probably the movie too, and write down everything I think about it as I'm watching it. (In sub, because that's how I originally watched it and it's made it so I can't stand their dub voices, too used to the subbed ones. XD Wanted to let you guys know just in case it matters.)
Hopefully this will be an enlightening experience for all of us. I might finally understand why people don't like it much and maybe whoever reads them will find a new appreciation for a show I adore.
The tag I'll be using for this so everyone can find it is #kabaneri an opinion
I hope that despite any differences in opinions we might have, we'll all have fun doing this. ^.^

Ruby is a rare type of protagonist
This is gonna be long, you’ve been warned!
I am a grown ass adult woman. I like female protagonists, I prefer watching them and relating to them, and always have.
I’ve watched a lot of animes since my teenage years, upwards of 400 last I counted on MyAnimeList a few years ago. I’ve been to Tokyo - twice - and spent at least 20 hours scouring the anime stores of Akihabara. I paid the Japanese mailing service to send a Saber figurine back to my home country since it was too big to bring in my luggage. (This one!)
Why does this matter and what does it have to do with Ruby? Read on:
During my years of being an utterly anime fanatic, I started to grow bored. After 400 animes, you’ve seen most of the plot twists. Most of the stereotypical personalities. All the classics have been watched and rewatched. The story beats, even if presented in a new packaging, becomes predictable.
You start to see the patterns, so to say. I’ve been hyped more times than I can count, only to be disappointed when yet another promising series took a predictable, cliché turn with its story or characters. It may not be sudden, sometimes it happens several episodes or even a few seasons into the show. So you never know for sure until having spent a lot of time watching.
There are a lot of GREAT animes with male protagonists, but how rare isn’t it to find one that does NOT build towards the guy being needing to become stronger than his enemies and winning some important final fight? (as is common in shounen in general)
As time went by I found myself getting more and more picky with what I wanted to spend time watching. I prefer shows with the cool, badass, strong girls, since those are the ones I enjoy watching and them being girls makes it easier for me to relate and enjoy their achievements.
Cool...
Tumblr media
Badass...
Tumblr media
...strong girls.
Tumblr media
These are what I want. Finding them, however, can be tedious work, especially in the role as main protagonists.
In the anime world, there are some common tendencies with strong female characters:
1) The badass female character is either a side-kick to the male protagonist, eventually become overshadowed by a male protagonist, OR in some cases by some new girl, because heaven forbid any of the cool girls get developed beyond their one single character arc. (ex. Fate/Zero, A Certain Magical Index, Shakugan no Shana, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, any anime with a harem, and so many others - they can still be good shows though, that’s not the point!)
2) There are great animes out there with great female protagonists, however they are usually either a) sexualized (ex. Kill la Kill) or b) shows geared towards kids (ex. Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, The Owl Hourse (yes, I’m putting this here even if it’s not an anime) or c) romance focused (ex. Revolutionary Girl Utena). I love these shows for other reasons though!
3) The actually great action animes with badass female protagonists that are allowed to develop and not be overshadowed by their crush/secret male protagonist etc. do exist, but are sadly few and far between. (Soul Reaper is pretty great with Maka, although BlackStar steals a lot of space, and I prefer the anime for this exact reason. A Certain Scientific Railgun was my fav for a long time, but sadly Mikoto is in love with the harem protagonist of the main show and gets overshadowed whenever he’s involved.)
And it doesn’t matter if the show is named after the girl(s) or not!
Here are two girls, each with their own anime named after them (Railgun/Index). Guess who’s the most important character who actually drives the main story?
Tumblr media
Shakugan no Shana: Yes, Shana is the name of the girl. Guess which character gets the most power-ups and biggest development?
Tumblr media
There’s nothing wrong with liking these shows, I mean I watched them too, and I enjoyed them for the most part... but sometimes I just... whish the dude would stay a side-kick?
So, first impression of RWBY was... cautious optimism?
When I first watched RWBY, because an online friend suggested it, I was surprised to find four strong female protagonists - and Ruby presented as the main protagonist what with the very first episode being named after her and there was no guy in sight.
Seems good? Even if the animation is super wonky. Ruby is cool. I like her. She has an awesome weapon too and is competent with it. She even bites back at people instead of becoming submissive. She gets saved in first episode yes, but it was by an adult woman after a woman took over the fight from Roman.
Also no fanservicy panty shots, suggestive angles and what-not? Seems promising.
Tumblr media
But I’d seen this before. A show starts out with a cool, interesting, badass girl as the main protagonist. Then at some point some guy gets introduced, and it turns out he’s special, and she crushes on him, and then he gets stronger, and now she’s his side-kick, and more girls come along, and everything keeps scaling upwards forever (except the original girl), you get the idea.
Then the show turned into some hybrid of Harry Potter x Sailor Moon x high school anime spinoff wannabe with questionable quality? Okay, but maybe with these interesting girls and some cool plot it can work?
The Jaundice episodes seemed to fulfill the prophecy and I lost interest halfway through. Yes, even if the episodes were just 6 minutes long.
I dropped RWBY and didn’t touch it again for several years.
By this point V4 had just finished. I was bored one day, and I decided to give RWBY another chance.
Got past V1 and V2. It was better than I remembered. Got to V3 and... oh no, is Pyrrha gonna do the “stealing the protagonist role” thing?
Ugh. I hate when shows trade out their main characters for new ones because they can’t figure out how to develop the ones they already have. Pyrrha is fine, but I’m already commited to team RWBY you know? Pyrrha is so OP compared to the others, it won’t be fun watching her just demolish every single foe ever, especially if she’s gonna have magic as well. It’ll just be her special story along with her romantic story with Jaune. She is going to overshadow team RWBY and then what, is Jaune gonna come along and do the same to her eventually?
With little faith left, I pressed on to episode 9, 10, 11, and... holy shit.
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT!
Tumblr media
They really did that, didn’t they? They really made me think they were incompetent, cliché writers and all that. That they were gonna focus on Pyrrha and Jaune going forwards because they had no idea how to tell a compelling story with the girls they’d already established as “main protagonists”.
And then they a) Killed off the “ace student” promised for greatness and b) destroyed the High School setting and c) Allowed the bad guys to win and d) Introduced an actual competent villain AND e) Gave new depth to team RWBY and Ruby in particular.
Tumblr media
I was HOOKED. I realized RWBY is a show that allows its protagonists to take a backseat now and then, only to hit hard with the actual meaningful stuff. Developing and letting side characters shine as well, so that it doesn’t seem like team RWBY are the only characters with purpose in this world.
Cause no matter how special or strong or high on the political ladder they are, no character in RWBY has all the answers, nor do they have any means to actually stop Salem.
They still don’t!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby has her silver eyes, but they didn’t “save” Beacon, or Pyrrha, or Penny, or Atlas. Actually, they may be more a curse than anything, now knowing about the Hound and what Salem can do to silver-eyed warriors. Not even a meaningful curse in the “I’ll become a cool vampire” type of curse, but just... horrible! No! Do not want this! Actually bad curse!
Ruby can’t solve this alone. She’s not all-powerful, she isn’t the shounen protagonist who always powers up in a pinch, she’s not the Maiden of all Maidens, she doesn’t always have the answers, she’s not Ozpin’s host or Salem’s Chosen or any of those clichés. That’s not the point of her character and the story we’re being told.
Ruby, like everyone else in this story, has to train, and learn, and fail, and do mistakes, and be wrong, and correct herself, and try again, and do better next time, and trust, take risks, experience loss and helplessness, and we have not seen the end of her development. I’m hyped for V9 not because of new fights, power-ups or what-not, but because I’m excited to see what Ruby has learned from their failures so far, how they’ll pick themselves up, and how they’ll try to approach the defeating of Salem.
Because at this point in time, they have no idea how to do any of it, and that’s what excites me most about RWBY and Ruby’s character in particular.
Ruby does not have all the answers, but she’s trying anyway, because the alternative is to give up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s 17 years old and has been thrust into war against a foe that can’t die, into a role of leadership she has no grasp on how to handle. She’s trying to learn from those around her, imperfect human beings as they too are. She’s doing her best, and although she happens to have special Grimm-melting laser beam eyes, that won’t stop Salem. It won’t save Remnant from the gods.
“What are you?” is going to be a very interesting question to explore in V9.
Ruby is a rare type of protagonist because she’s not the answer to every problem, she’s not the Chosen One solely able to save the world. Yet she’s also not overshadowed or sidelined by someone else. Her story intrigues me more than anyone else’s, in any other show I’ve seen.

Fanfic Update!
Don't Leave Me To Drown (two chapters, completed) Fandom: 甲鉄城のカバネリ | Koutetsujou no Kabaneri | Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Anime) Summary: Eight years ago, a lonely Ikoma ran away from home to a lonely beach in a lonely town and found an even lonelier merman. With nothing else to keep him on land, Ikoma joined his aquatic lover beneath the waves. Hatsune, his little sister, has grown up believing her brother died in the jaws of a ravenous merfolk. But unlike Ikoma, there’s nothing to call her to the shore except the deep-seated knowledge of a watery grave, and everything above the water worth living for. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t put aside the memory of her brother… Inspired by/a fan sequel to Mosstar’s Darkwater series. Contains repeated references to past familial abuse; nothing explicit but don’t eat the dead dove.
So I got (re)obsessed with Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, a show that has one of the tiniest fandoms I've ever been in, but it's okay because I've also managed to find some of the literal best fanfics within that tag on AO3. Shoutout to @river-muse cause I discovered her works and became so unwell with her merfolk AU story Drag Me Down that I absolutely could not resist writing a fanfic of her fanfic!
You don't need to know the canon show to read this fansequel, but you absolutely need to read the inspiring story first. (Unashamed plug for Drag Me Down and its prequel, they ripped out my heart and I want to inflict this really good story on everyone I know.) I wrote this in two days and could not think of anything else until I finished it. It was literally so fun to write, and yeah if you're a fan of the series (or just a nut like me) check this out!
(Please read the tags first, content warnings for referenced child abuse.)

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is an original dark fantasy anime series that is not based on a manga. The first season of the series, also known as Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, consisted of 12 episodes in total and was directed by Tetsuro Araki. The anime, licensed by Crunchyroll and Funimation, originally met viewers on Fuji TV. Created by Japanese animation studio Wit Studio, Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress was first released on April 8, 2016. Wit Studio, a renowned studio, is also the creative studio for very popular anime such as Seraph of the End and The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Shortly after the anime was released, it attracted the attention of many animation fans. The second season release date of the series, which made the season finale in June 2016 with the episode “Iron Fortress”, has been discussed for years. So is the show going on now? How will the story be completed? Here is what we have compiled for you. Let’s first take a look at the story details of the anime written by Ichiro Okouchi.1 What is the plot of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress?1.1 What about the Manga of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress?2 Will there be a second season of the anime?2.1 A new anime season in the future?What is the plot of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress?Koutetsujou no Kabaneri takes us to Japan during the Industrial Revolution. More precisely, Hinomoto was an island country with its name at that time. Although we go back an average of 250 years, that period has already entered the post-apocalyptic period because the walking dead, whose origin and origin are unknown, have already surrounded the world. These zombie-like walking dead are called “Kabane” and they are faster and more agile than stereotypical zombies. Their hearts shine and they are hard to kill because they are woven with thin iron. The rifles and swords of the period can also provide some benefits against the Kabanes. In addition, they are extremely sensitive to the smell of blood and can move in a flock. .example_responsive_1 max-width:100%; width:100%; height:250px; @media(min-width: 500px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; @media(min-width: 800px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; Surviving people built high-walled cities to protect themselves from the Kabenes, which invaded the whole world, especially Japan. It is possible to travel between these cities called stations by armored trains. The protagonist of the series, Ikoma, also lives in Aragane Station, which is a middle-class station. Ikoma, who works in the maintenance of the trains, wants to fight them instead of hiding from Kabaneler because of a regret he has experienced in his past. For this, he is working on a weapon of his own design, and its purpose is to pierce the hearts of Kabanes easily with this weapon.Like all people trying to survive, Ikome and Mumei take the armored train called Koutetsujou. The destination of the train is Kongokaku, but the journey will not be easy. When everyone on the train is afraid of Ikoma, food shortages brought about by the overpopulation, nervous warfare, and of course, the constant threat of Kabane, Koutetsujou, and his contents are waiting for a long journey. .example_responsive_1 max-width:100%; width:100%; height:250px; @media(min-width: 500px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; @media(min-width: 800px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; What about the Manga of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress?Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress anime series does not actually follow a Manga and the script is prepared directly for the animation. The first season of the series had made a suitable final for Season 2.Will there be a second season of the anime?As of July 23, 2022, the second season of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress has not been confirmed. Wit Studio or any related company with the anime has not yet renewed Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress for a second season. But the good news for fans is not absent. The 81-minute, 3-episode sequel film published on Netflix on May 10, 2019, continues the story. Animated by the same studio, the sequel, titled “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato“, is not as popular as the main series, but it partially meets the audience’s expectations. Ikoma and Iron Fort join the alliance to take back the region from Kabane forced by taking their fight to the Unato’s battlefields.A new anime season in the future?For anime to have a new season, it must have a strong popularity and fan base. Only in this way, a new production of the series can be profitable for the creators. When we look at the first season’s disc sales of the anime, we see that it managed to reach its financial targets by selling 6,100 copies on volume average. Besides, released in the summer of 2019 and licensed by Netflix, the film screened on a small scale nationwide, limited to 2 weeks, and the estimated box office revenue is about 70 million to 100 million YEN. .example_responsive_1 max-width:100%; width:100%; height:250px; @media(min-width: 500px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; @media(min-width: 800px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; When we look at the popularity of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress today, we see that it has an average search volume on Google. However, considering that very few of the animes have been approved for the new season, this may not be considered a success. On Twitter, 77.1k people follow the anime’s official page. This number of followers is also not insignificant for an anime, but it is not perfect enough to guarantee a new season. Bofuri, one of the anime with a similar number of followers, had recently received a renewal. In addition, we see that the successful productions of Wit Studio, a successful studio, have received new season approvals.75% of anime with over 100k followers on Twitter have received a new season renewal once. On the other hand, 50% of anime with 40-100k followers have been renewed at least once.Since the series does not have a manga, there does not seem to be a problem in terms of the source material. On the other hand, the fact that they still generate income from the published mobile game shows that this brand is alive and that there is a possibility of a new season. The most critical point that reduces the possibility of Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress’s new season is that 6 years have passed since the last new anime season, and there is still no renewal. The director and writer of the series continued to participate in other projects after the series. Director Tetsurō Araki last appeared in the anime movie Bubble, which aired on Netflix on April 28, 2022. In addition, the author of the series, Ichirō Ōkouchi, took part in the original anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which will be released in October 2022. Hovewer, there are no announced or leaked plans for a second season of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. .example_responsive_1 max-width:100%; width:100%; height:250px; @media(min-width: 500px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; @media(min-width: 800px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; However, it should not be forgotten that many animes have been approved years later. If there is a leak or announcement about a new season in the future, we will let you know here about the all news about Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress, but our estimates are that the probability for a new season is around 40%. If there is a renewal, we may see a new season around 2024, considering the production time. .example_responsive_1 max-width:100%; width:100%; height:250px; @media(min-width: 500px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px; @media(min-width: 800px) .example_responsive_1 width: 336px; height: 280px;

1 Episode Attack on titan - Hajime Isayama
Attack on titan is my favourite anime and I do know this anime by heart. I've known this when I was still in high school. Although since this is a Japanese anime they all start in a manga. So this was made through traditional drawing and they are printed to make the millions of copy. As for animating it, Japan are really know for animation studios, one of the first studio that I knew is "wit studio" they're the ones who animated Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Attack on Titan and the famous anime as of today Spy x Family. Since they are an animation studio they have advanced gadgets to make good animes especially when it comes to those modern anime with a 3d like effect they have really good software to draw.
So the episode is about a young lad named Eren Jaeger with big dreams. He wanted to explore the outside world with his friend since they live inside the walls thats 50 metres high. On this episode he was having a dream while his foster sister woke him up to go home since they gathered firewood together. They went to the main road and soldiers entered the plaza, they are called the survey corps, the ones who fight titans outside the walls. Eren admired the soldiers since he wanted to become one of them when we grows up. Mikasa tried to stop him from dreaming about it because it is a very dangerous job. They so came home and Mikasa told Eren's mom that he wanted to join the survey corps as a result his mom got angry. Eren's father left home after he got scold to go on a business trip. Soon after Eren ran away to meet with his friend Armin and to talk about joining the survey corps and about the outside world. Sadly on that day they were attacked by a 60 metre Titan and broke the wall for the titans to go in. The village was attacked and countless of people died. While Eren's mother got stuck on the house debris and couldn't get out, Eren tried to rescue her but it was no use. SO the mom told their soldier friend to take Mikasa and Eren away and let her die. The soldier did and Eren watched his mom get eaten by a titan.
Attack on titan or its japanese name "Shingeki no kyojin" (Aka AOT or SNK) was shown in a medieval state, much like a steampunk era with the world having taken shelter behind three massive stone walls that protect them from the Titans, naked weird humanoid giants, who prey on humans. The main story revolves around the mystical descent of the Titans, and revealing the forgotten history of mankind. So basically a whole bunch of unsettling gore horror and mystery I saw it when my sister told me about it. Back in 2013, when it was all hyped and people were going crazy on how great this new animated series was. I was so excited to see it, but I didn't know what to expect. it's been almost 9 years since I watched it. Today, which was the "Final Season" and the anime series is still ongoing. I have to say that its a masterpiece as it was able to capture so many emotions from everyone. I think it was one of the best shows ever created.

𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎 : ( kabaneri of the iron fortress male characters )
a/n : why is there no fanfics about this fandom?? hello?? okay, guess i'll start first!
consist of : fluff, established relationship, gender neutral reader — start of the relationship
Tumblr media
𝐁𝐈𝐁𝐀, ah yes, the epitome of 'i do not know what love is'. if you do became his partner, please have mercy on his soul—being his significant other, you must be patient with him. biba trust you to a certain length when you and him first started dating but it slowly crumbles down like glass and will eventually starts on fully trusting you. baby steps, baby steps, you guide him on these things with a gentle act, careful not to startle the man. though busy, biba will always find ways to make up for you and spend time, making sure that you're entertained before going back to work. since he doesn't know how dating works, biba relies on his words, making sure that you felt love. everyday he'd come and ask where you are only to tell you“i love you.” with a light smile on his face, leaning forward to place his forehead upon yours, closing his eyes to relish the moment.
𝐈𝐊𝐎𝐌𝐀, quite the level headed boyfriend he is—upon entering a relationship with you, he still remains awkward and unaware of what to do nor act whenever around you thus oftentimes resulting in a series of misunderstandings to which he grows aware of and runs off to apologizes to you. “y/n, I'm sorry, i was wrong.. if only-” and you would no doubt falter at the way his eyes glisten with a genuine glaze, the way he held your hand, pressing his forehead on the back of your hand as a support and assurance for his guilty heart, you'd forgive him in a heartbeat because you know that ikoma always mean well. upon hearing of your 'i forgive you' the boy is quick to hug you on the spot and gently whisper a continuous chant of your name, how sorry he is, and i love yous. eventually growing flustered when he calms down.
𝐊𝐔𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐔, unlike biba, uses his actions to show his affection. of course he is always busy with guarding the heiress but whenever he finds the time to take on a break, kurusu hurries to the car that you are riding on and greets you, hugging you with longing or kissing the spot of your cheek/forehead/crown lightly with a small whisper of “i miss you, y/n” that you would have to strain your ears to hear. but of course, alike to the heiress, kurusu also guards you intensely and seriously, not wanting to bring harm to you. this man is overprotective af. you bet that whenever the koutetsujou stops for a oil change or a break, he'd go on his way to bring you meals and drinks, staying beside you the whole time and making sure that you eat before going on his way to continue his job after a pat on the head.
𝐒𝐔𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐈, is definitely a smug man, proud of the fact that you are his partner and claims to everyone how he is so damn lucky and blessed by the gods that everyone grows tired of him. handsy too, sukari always has a hand on you—if not, always looks after you like a hawk. relationship with sukari is fun and annoying, at times he treats you like a man where he'd constantly tease you and roughhouse with you, keeping you in lock hold until you agree to his claim, smudging your face with dirt before laughing at your messy look “hehe, look at you, so ugly~ ouch! i was just kidding!” but there are also times where he is so soft and that is whenever sukari would kiss your nose or pinch your cheek with the slightest smile.
𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐔𝐌𝐈, is a softy for you, one who always follow after you like a puppy all the while asking if you need anything. he is quite the sweetheart. boy literally worships your every step, though of course, he still thinks for himself—sometimes, but he can't help it, come on! you're the first person whom he ever ends up with and hopefully the last as well, of course he's so helpless around you! the cute things you'll see is that whenever you're around, takumi always gets clumsy especially at work that when he hears your wonderful and sweet voice he'd accidentally hurts himself. “oh-oh! y/n! you shouldn't be here, c'mon i'll escort you out, what if you get hurt, hmm?” you bet that ikoma always shakes his head at how lovesick his best friend is.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, la serie arriva su Crunchyroll

Base it on how high you score the actual series, sorry I forgot to say that earlier
hmmmmmm let’s see, in no particular order:
SSS: Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo
SS: Gangsta., Gintama, A:TLA, Mushishi, Black Lagoon, Banana Fish, Mononoke
S: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Zetsuen no Tempest, Fruits Basket, Kono Oto Tomare!, Akatsuki no Yona, Chihayafuru, Haikyuu, HTTYD (movie), Inuyasha
A: Natsume Yuujinchou, Violet Evergarden, Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun, Boku no Hero Academia, Dreamworks Dragons series, Detective Conan/Magic Kaito
B: Soul Eater, Nurarihyon no Mago
Guilty Pleasure: Soul Eater (lol), Detective Conan/Magic Kaito, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri
the guilty pleasure is the ones I usually don’t find appealing but surprisingly liked or shows with cool concepts but lots of wasted potential
this is ranked with how I score the show in its entirety. there’s more in lower ranks as well but those are mainly just old guilty pleasures lmao

fall 2019: thoughts
stuff this season i’ve finished:
ensemble stars. muuuusic, man. i tried playing the mobage at the beginning of the year and failed, so a friend said it’d be easier to just watch. pretty fun! kinda just casually binged through it.
actors: songs connection. the main franchise’s mainly just vocaloid covers and drama tracks so ngl what i expected: slice-of-life about the daily lives of school boys with the occasional insert song. what i got: that, plus a casual meta somewhat-isekai side plot, which was what got me hooked. the whole thing with the cats, white shadows and thrive central is super intriguing, and the few eps really went all out
honzuki no gekokujou / ascendance of a bookworm. i’ve read the light novels so i was just stoked to see everyone on screen. nothing extraordinary, but it was fun to see them animated (and all the funky hair colors, like seriously, there’s probably enough to fill the whole spectrum). main’s design was a lil different and benno’s voice caught me off-guard, which took some getting used to. they also kinda skimmed over details to fit vol 1’s plot within 14 eps, but overall a pretty good adaptation! part 2 comes out next year and i can’t wait to see my three gray-robed children
kono oto tomare / sounds of life! cour2. absolutely loved it. doujima’s arc and the qualifiers’ arc are my favorites, and seeing 天泣 beautifully animated was the highlight of my month. the nationals’ arc has yet to finish in the manga so there probably won’t be another season anytime soon. in the future, hopefully! i want to see my new 1st-year kids animated too ;;
hoshiai no sora / stars align. yo. this was my Anime of the Season, this cleverly-disguised drama/sports anime with a ton of issues to talk about. literally so much to unpack in just 13 eps: the team’s developments and struggles with their identities and self-worth, their wholesome friendship, their strained or even plain awful familial relationships. it’s honestly a real shame we’ve been robbed of the second half since they axed it, but there’s a twitter campaign going on rn so fingers crossed! i will forever love these children and their stupid grasshopper dance. please let me protect them
+ stuff i’ve caught up on:
aoharu x kikanjuu. eh, kinda just skimmed through this one. it was something i just sat down in my sleep-deprived state to watch, and while some parts were entertaining, it’s mostly... forgettable
blackfox. the story felt a bit chunky to me since there wasn’t a lot of time to fully develop character relationships, but it got the job done in terms of accomplishing rikka’s main goal (or well, getting there). the animation is superb and everything is just visual eye-candy. it also felt kind of slow in the middle? hm, will give it a rewatch another time to fully grasp it.
rokka no yuusha / rokka: braves of the 6 flowers. this ended up more on the mystery genre than i expected, but not necessarily in a bad way. the premise, and admittedly the first half, was mediocre, but it started getting interesting once it went to trying to find the ‘fake’ chosen one, which i saw coming from a mile away. kind dragged out longer than i thought necessary, but the buildup to the reveal was executed alright. characters were fun, though i thought fremy’s development (especially with the romance) was awfully slow, which might be why i wasn’t invested in it
koutetsujou no kabaneri / kabaneri of the iron fortress. coming from someone who hadn’t watched AOT, i really tried to like this. and i did like most of it: the industrial setting, the concept of the stations, all the metal and steam incorporated in the designs, the characters and their individual roles on the train, the animation, the fights, the visual effects of blood and sparks bursting everywhere- the only part i didn’t really like was probably the second half of the series, with biba and his hunters. the pacing was just too drawn out, some of the characters’ actions didn’t make a whole lot of sense, and ikoma took way too long to get his shit together. one can argue it’s for the sake of emotional development, but- yeah, still too long. i’d really only rewatch the first half
world trigger. it’s been on my watchlist since forever and i have regrets sleeping on this for years. i’ll admit everything’s a little slow paced and over-explained but i’ll forgive it for all the great and lovable characters. although the fugitive arc was a little slow and didn’t capture my full interest; the writing also felt a bit off and not really consistent with the rest of the series, which i later learned was because it was an anime-only arc, but i’ll take it only because it gave us the extra youtarou ep. definitely adding this to one of my favs now. next season next year!
ongoing: radiant s2, ahiru no sora, boku no hero academia s4, mairimashita! iruma-kun, gintama (2006) (yep taking my time with this)
dnf but might go back into: beastars, urashimasakatasen, assassins pride

Best anime, my opinion? Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) a post apocalyptic anime. Its Zombie themed. It has a big ass armored train, like I'm talking huge! Like the entire rail system of Japan had to be widened and completely redone to fit this big metal behemoth. It has good story. A good amount of action. Sadly the series is kinda short but look at this fucking thing!
