Nature's Woodland Decay - Scarlet Cup Fungi
flickr
Nature's Woodland Decay - Scarlet Cup Fungi by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: SCARLET ELF CUP (Sarcoscypha austriaca)..Mystical and cheery, the scarlet elf cup grows on decaying sticks and branches in damp spots and beneath leaf litter on the woodland floor. Their bright pops of colour brighten up even the darkest winter day.Elf cup fungus is fairly widespread but uncommon in Britain and Ireland. It favours areas with high rainfall and can be seen on decaying sticks and branches – especially in damp areas of the woodland floor – and on ditch sides and stream banks.

Lovely little find - scarlet elfcup mushrooms (sarcoscypha austriaca or, perhaps sarcoscypha coccinea, they are hard to distinguish).
Even if a little troubling, as they are not supposed to grow in the middle of the winter here in Lithuania. Never seen them before March, actually, and the pic was taken on the third of November (2020).

Sarcoscypha austriaca,
eastern white and red elves cup fungi
Up until recently, I just assumed that every red elves cup fungi that I came across in the united states was the same species with different forms, this is not the case however; there are three close look-a-likes within’ the United States and usually everyone Ids them under one species, Sarcoscypha coccinea. S. coccinea is actually a species only found within’ the temperate forests of the Pacific Northwest during spring time and is distinct from the other two species of red elf cup fungi,S. dudleyi and S. austriaca, of the eastern portion of North America and the midwest. The Identification key for separating the two eastern species out requires you to either have a clear non damaged specimen and a hand lense to look at pour space or a microscope to view spores and growth patterns in hyphae.  I found this example two years ago about this same time of year and only recently was I able to get any second opinions on a real ID because I had to go back and find more examples.
Photographed by the parking lot at the beginning of Clifton Gorge, Clifton, Ohio.

Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha coccinea) and Ruby Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha austriaca) (indistinguishable without microscopy) are one of the few Spring mushrooms that are also edible. They have a mild taste (when overcooked, can become flavourless). They can be gently pan-fried in a little oil/ butter or used in a stew, and they make a nice addition to pasta and rice dishes, or fried eggs.
If you're out looking for them, Elf Cups enjoy wet, muddy places (often close to a stream), and they grow on fallen twigs, rotting wood, under dead leaves but can be easily spotted because of their bright red color.

Another wonderful discovery from the Mon River Trail this afternoon: either scarlet cup or scarlet elf cup (Sarcoscypha dudleyi or Sarcoscypha austriaca), radiant red, late winter to early spring fungi of Appalachia’s rich, moist woods. After consulting my trusty, beaten-up field guide, I was forced to call “uncle”. Short of being able to examine the spore pattern, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish dudleyi from austriaca.

The weather has finally cleared up enough to do some hiking! A few friends I came across while hiking in the German Alps recently:
Tumblr media
Peltigera sp. (Likely P. praetextata but I didn't take a sample so I can't be sure)
Tumblr media
Another Peltigera! Likely P. horzontalis. I love that dark color on the bright green moss!
Tumblr media
I love the colonies of effervescent crustose lichens that grow on beech trees. This particular sample was a brighter green than I typically see around here (the picture doesn't exactly do it justice). You can really see it next to the grayish-white of more typical graphis lichens common this habitat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not lichens, but another ascomycete fungus--Sarcoscypha austriaca, or scarlet elf cup!
A few more fungal friends because why not:

Gorgeous! I have found that since I started studying lichens, I notice so many more incredible things in nature than I did before just by taking the time to note the small, incredible details of the ecosystem. Go outside, look for lichens, and be amazed at what you will find!
