Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Spain (No. 2)
The building that is now contemplated as the co-cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada is, really, an amalgam of different styles ranging from the Romanesque of its head to the baroque of its genuine free-standing bell tower, passing through its body of naves, which can be classified as fully Gothic. To all this we must add the different reforms and extensions that it suffered during the Modern Age as a result of restorations, collapses or, simply, by the changes that each bishop was making to adapt the see to the tastes and fashions of each historical moment.
Several modifications were made to the original plant, adding:
in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries: the naves, defenses and portico of the west façade;
in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: the chapels of the apse, of the Immaculate and the two in sections 2 and 3 of the south façade;
in the seventeenth century the baptistery of the section of the feet;
in the eighteenth century, the south portal;
the tower, original of the twelfth century, was rebuilt in the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries; the latter in the current location.

Day 14 - 23 April Santo Domingo de Calzada to Belorado 21.7 km and 356m
Yesterday evening we joined Carol who has lived in America for 20 years but hails from Stafford prior to that. We had a meal in the hotel she was staying at El Molino Florin. It was a mill before being a hotel and is an ancient building. For a smart hotel I did think the cost would be higher but no - three courses including a beautiful white Rioja for 18€! My only gripe was that the rabbit stew I had was extremely bony. On our way back to our hotel we passed amazing Paradour hotel - the bar seems to be set in cloisters. Amazing place.
Left early for day 14 walk - think we were out by 7.30 to start the walk. We did a very short detour to Granon away from the very busy N120 Highway. Lovely village…even lovelier cafe! Other than that highlight it was a trudge trudge trudge day. The path ran very close to the motorway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You see the shell signs everywhere. Our favourite was in a church along the way. We passed some very old villages - Viloria de la Rioja, Vilamayor del Rio (very pretty) and a beautiful albergue in Castildelagado.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There seems to be a huge amount of road building works going on. Carrie suggested it might be to divert the motorway away from some of the ancient villages.
Tumblr media
For days we have been walking towards a hill (mountain? we are high up) we have named the nipple. Today we finally passed it. We both wondered if it was a hillfort at the top but on passing at close quarters I doubt it.
At Vilamayor del Rio we got to a cafe and were desperate for a pick me up of coffee and cake. Weirdly there was a ‘dance floor’ laid out in the cafe with a pole! This is Jenny who ‘striked a pose’.
Tumblr media
I did tell her she should use the photo as her profile. We did meet up with her again the following day in Atapuerca - in the only bar in the village.
Tumblr media
My face is suffering from the sun (a few days ago), the wind today, pollen, salt and God knows so I covered as much as I could. It made Carrie laugh anyway. And yes it did calm my face down.
Tumblr media
One of the amazing churches on route - so many you get lost in them. This is Iglesia Santa Maria Belgrado.
Our Albergue in Belgrado was fabulous. We had a 6 bed dorm with its OWN BATHROOM. Unheard of! The Albergue also had a heated pool but as neither of us had brought cozies and because it was stupid cold we didn’t bother. We actually went to a bar to warm up. Carrie was upset at seeing a dog badly tethered to a post. His lead was too short and the dog looked malnourished. His owner had obviously been drinking in the bar for a while. Carrie took some bread out to him - almost took her fingers off - he was obviously hungry. It wasn’t pleasant seeing it.
The Albergue was one of the nicest we have stayed at other than the cold. It had so many facilities. And the food was really good. We made more friends in our dorm. Our Camino family is growing!
And yes I am a day late posting… especially as we have again rejigged our timetable. Tomorrow we head for Atapuerca…over 18 miles so our backpacks will be transported. Carrie sorted that out and booked us an apartment 😄😄 in Burgos while I fired a few WhatsApp’s etc to try and get accommodation. Its getting more difficult so in Burgos we will have to book the rest of the trip.
Tumblr media
Some of the amazing wall art along the way.

they posted the list of all the towns that will participate in this year's grand prix so i had to make a post about it !!!
for the uninitiated, the grand prix is a legendary spanish game show that was rebooted last year after years without it that puts two towns to fight one against the other in funny silly games in which the mayor and the most prominent neighbours participate! it serves as promotion for the town and there's also a monetary price for the winner of the final i think ? it takes place during all summer so it's a core memory of spanish summer :)
here's an extremely long video with the best moments of last year, so you can see the vibes and what the games are about and stuff, it's very family friendly and kinda cringy but in a fun way
anyways, the towns !!!! there's 14 this year, below i'll post a pic of each of them; they're, in order:
almacelles, in lleida (catalunya), with 6.8k inhabitants.
bembibre, in león (castilla y león), with 8.1k inhabitants.
binissalem, in mallorca (balears), with 9.1k inhabitants.
burela, in lugo (galicia), with 9.4k inhabitants.
cangues d'onís, in asturies, with 6.3k inhabitants.
llerena, in bazajoz (extremadura), with 5.6k inhabitants.
medio cudeyo, in cantabria, with 7.6k inhabitants.
morata de tajuña, in madrid, with 8.1k inhabitants.
ondara, in alacant (valència), with 7.3k inhabitants.
olvera, in cádiz (andalucía), with 7.8k inhabitants.

Day 12 - Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada
The Guide Book says today was 13.2 miles, but we made a small diversion for lunch and my phone says 14.5 miles.
We had our bags transferred today so travelled light. As we walk more days the pads of our feet are getting a bit sore and the rucksack feels heavier and heavier! It’s really easy to have it transferred, most albergue’s have envelopes belonging to the carriers which you attach to your rucksack. You need to have somewhere reserved to send it to, and I have been doing all the booking online.
Anyway, back to today…We set off as usual at 7:30 in overcast weather with the odd spot of rain. Within half an hour we had our ponchos on but it never got more than a bit drizzly.
We climbed out of the town through some forestry passing an odd statue of Jesus up on the hill. The hillside, path, rocks and land in general is very red in this part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were plenty of vineyards to admire, some being very well kept with guys at the side of the path strimming the weeds away. The above ground irrigation system was interesting to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were making for Azofra for breakfast, about 4 miles away. Breakfast was the usual coffee, orange juice and pain au chocolat. But to be honest the novelty is now wearing off and we’re thinking of other things that we could have instead.
The lunch stop was about another 6 miles away so we plodded on. Our lives are defined by how far away the villages are for breakfast, lunch and final destination!
The landscape initially wasn’t particularly pretty, the path passing by the side of a motorway, but it soon turned inland and we were once again rewarded by huge open fields, reverting back to the chalk path, deep green barley fields, yellow rape fields and poppies by the pathway. The weather cleared up, the sun came out, and we had some amazing views either side to the hills and mountains.
Tumblr media
As we approached Ciruena, our lunch stop, we initially went through what looked like a golf resort, with modern seemingly empty houses, a golf course and swimming pool. It all looked a bit out of place and odd.
Tumblr media
We diverted off the waymarked path into Ciruena village to the local bar for a welcome drink (Jane had freshly squeezed orange juice and I the local lemonade that I have become very attached to) and a warm tuna, cheese and egg roll.
After lunch we carried on through the open landscape finally reaching Santo Domingo shortly after 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’re in an ancient very large albergue right in the middle of the old town. Our room is in the old part of the hostel up in the eaves. All bar one of the beds are single beds, it’s like an old school dorm!
Tumblr media
I chilled until 5 while Jane went for a wander, then we both went to see the cathedral. It’s huge and they have done a good job inside of making sure everything is explained very well.
Tumblr media
We had a Pilgrim’s menu in the square then went to find the supermarket for a few bits. On the way we passed groups of youngsters practicing for a dance competition and it was great to watch them.
Now we’re back and chilling, and hoping we’ll get some sleep. Tomorrow is a very short day so hopefully we can snooze in the afternoon.

The hermitage stands on the south side of the Plaza del Santo and tradition says that it was built on the old and humble oratory made by Domingo García 'El Santo'. In 1487 the stonemasons Sancho and Pero Gil built two walls and changed the position of the façade. In 1527 the Master Hernando made the doors and the stonemason Yñigo the roofs. Thus it was raised until it was finished with the current appearance in 1710.
The hermitage had several destinations since it served as the first dwelling of the Cistercian Nuns until finishing their monastery and was the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Saint.
The Virgen de la Plaza is the patron saint of the city, whose feast is celebrated on August 5 and her image, with that of the founder, go out in procession on September 18, Thanksgiving Day in the town.

Days 9 & 10, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Belorado
I have left the lush, green vineyards of La Rioja behind and have now entered the quite sun scorched region of Castilla y León. The sun is blazing and there is rarely shade. I am carrying a lot of food and water so that I don’t get caught without supplies. I visited a pharmacy yesterday and the super helpful pharmacist hooked me up with a complete set of Compeed bandages to take care of blisters, SPF50 lip balm and electrolytes to help replenish as I go. Spanish pharmacies put my local CVS to shame!
Tumblr media
All around me is great big blue sky and many shades of brown landscape. I can not only feel the heat, but it’s visible. I am crossing potato farms as well as fields of sunflowers used to make oil. These sunflower fields have seen prettier days, as now they are just skeletons of what they once were.
