Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Spain (No. 2)
The building that is now contemplated as the co-cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada is, really, an amalgam of different styles ranging from the Romanesque of its head to the baroque of its genuine free-standing bell tower, passing through its body of naves, which can be classified as fully Gothic. To all this we must add the different reforms and extensions that it suffered during the Modern Age as a result of restorations, collapses or, simply, by the changes that each bishop was making to adapt the see to the tastes and fashions of each historical moment.
Several modifications were made to the original plant, adding:
in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries: the naves, defenses and portico of the west façade;
in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: the chapels of the apse, of the Immaculate and the two in sections 2 and 3 of the south façade;
in the seventeenth century the baptistery of the section of the feet;
in the eighteenth century, the south portal;
the tower, original of the twelfth century, was rebuilt in the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries; the latter in the current location.

Not every town along the Camino has these big signs that are clearly intended for photos/selfies, but I love them; so here are four photos of me with names of Spanish towns/cities from when I did the Camino this last spring.

Tour St. Jacques, Paris, 2017.
Le début d'un Chemin Saint-Jacques !
Pilgrims gathered at the Tour St. Jacques, once a major church stood at its foot, and began the journey from Paris to Santiago. The chemin out of Paris, one of several routes in France, is still marked with yellow arrows. It eventually joins some of those other routes at Ostabat just before crossing the Pyrenees. At Roncesvalles (Ronceveaux) just over the crest on the Spanish side of those mountains begins the Camino francés, the French route.

Camino signs. Direction sighs are posted throughout the Camino. They are yellow arrows guiding pilgrims to Santiago.

Some regions have their own variations. On the Caminho Portuguese I have found that the mobile apps often take pilgrims on busy roads. In every case so far, the signs have led me along more tranquil and scenic routes.

In Portugal, there is another famous pilgrimage to Fatima. These arrows are blue.

Learning to Walk 8
Learning to do without (coffee?!?) and learning to receive hospitality.
CAMINHO PORTUGUÊS – Alvaiázere (32,730 STEPS – 24.41 KMS – 15.16 MILES) “I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of walking, that is, of taking walks – who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering…” – Henry David Thoreau, Walking Sunrise in Calvinos. The Walk Today Yesterday’s Tuna Turnover surprise, though not a proper breakfast, was at least…
