First Secret Invasion Trailer From Marvel Studios At Disney D23
Tumblr media
Marvel Studios recently released the first trailer for Secret Invasion at D23. Secret Invasion is an upcoming Disney Plus series starring Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Emilia Clarke. The series centers around Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who is trying to try to stop the Skrulls who have infiltrated the highest spheres of the Marvel Universe. Secret Invasion has the feel of a spy thriller and is based on one of the most iconic Marvel comic book storylines of all time. In the comics, Secret Invasion was a crossover event that shook the very foundation of the Marvel Universe. A race of shape-shifting aliens called the Skrulls secretly infiltrate the Earth. The Skrulls infiltrate every form of government and even infiltrate the Avengers team. No one could be trusted and relationships were broken as a result of the strain of that mistrust. Marvel Studios first introduces us to the Skrulls in Captain Marvel; however, their characterizations are different from the comics. The Skrulls in Captain Marvel are refugees rather and are not a hostile invasion force. Secret Invasion looks like it will stick to the comic book storyline and will finally make the Skrulls a real threat. Nick Fury will not know who to trust and fans are in for a lot of great surprises as we will no doubt see. Marvel is releasing the first trailer for the upcoming Disney Plus series, Secret Invasion, At the D23 Expo. The trailer features Nick Fury as he navigates a world of subterfuge and secrecy. The Skrulls are replacing people and Nick Fury and Talos are the only things standing in their way. The Disney+ series looks dark and the tone is quite ominous in the trailer. sThere's possibly some fan-favorite Marvel characters who have been Skrulls from the beginning. We just don't know and that's what will make the series so enthralling. You can watch the first trailer for Secret Invasion below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZVTkn2NjS0 The trailer looks great and extremely dark for a Marvel series. Don't get me wrong, I think it totally fits with the tone, but it's reminiscent of a Jason Bourne style spy-thriller. I find it interesting that no major Marvel characters were present in the trailer. The idea that our favorite heroes are really Skrulls is intriguing and a bit terrifying. Maybe there will be a cameo or two, but for now, it looks like it's going to be the Nick Fury show. Which is good in a way. He's been a side character in every movie or show, so it's about time he got his own show. Hopefully, the show will be as good as we hope and lives up to the hype. You can catch Secret Invasion when it hits Disney Plus in Spring 2023. Read the full article

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Tumblr media
As I began marathoning the Star Wars films in production order, countless friends told me Episode II - Attack of the Clones was the worst of the prequels. Really? I remember enjoying it with the big armies, grown-ups actors (goodbye Jake Lloyd!), no Jar-Jar Binks, and addition of Christopher Lee as the villain. Having seen it again, I'll call it a better Star Wars movie than Episode I but purely as a movie, it's rough. Tin-eared dialogue, countless moments of “sequel-itus”, and a romantic subplot so poorly handled it comes off as genuinely creepy often make it hilariously bad.
Ten years after The Phantom Menace, Annakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is nearing the end of his training under Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). When the Jedi are assigned to protect Senator Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) she and Skywalker fall in love - a forbidden infatuation. Meanwhile, an assassination attempt on Amidala reveals the secret construction of a clone army and an impending attack by a Separatist movement seeking to topple the Galactic Republic.
Nothing can prepare you for the abhorrent performances but don't blame Hayden Christiansen, or Natalie Portman. Their dialogue sounds like the romantic letters I wrote when I was in high school. Everything's melodramatic, forced, and artificial-sounding. The blame must be forwarded to writers George Lucas and Jonathan Hales.
Assuming you overlook the dialogue and miss Christensen's creepy glares, you’ll still have to contend with the film's obsession with references. Why are C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) in this film? Their origins were unnecessarily told in the last movie, and now they just HAPPEN to participate in what turns out to be one of the most important events in the universe? And then, they'll go on to help destroy the Death Star? It makes this galaxy feel like a neighborhood. You could forgive their inclusion if it wasn’t for an origin story to Boba Fett thrown in as well. I get that he's a cool-looking character and a fan favorite but in-universe, he’s just some random mercenary. He isn't important. Except now he is 'cause we get to meet him as a kid. Does this give you more insight into his character? No, so what's the point?
Attack of the Clones has plenty of scenes that evoke the movie serials that inspired Star Wars. There's an immense gladiator coliseum complete with weird monsters, dizzying chases, exotic locations, and cliffhanger scenarios with multiple plotlines and our heroes being taken prisoner or awaiting their doomed fate. On paper, the movie sounds like it should work. It's the sloppy execution that's at fault.
Despite the mountain of problems I still kind of like this movie both ironically and earnestly. As a movie that’s so bad it’s good, this is great. The wooden, stilted performances make the bad dialogue more memorable and quotable. There are some cool moments throughout like an insane assembly line gauntlet no one should be able to traverse… unless they are as lucky as our heroes. It’s a mix of visual razzle-dazzle and coincidences so ludicrous you’ll be howling. It’s a fun movie to discuss because of the strange decisions made throughout and most importantly, it’s never boring. The monster and character designs are great, the action scenes keep getting bigger. There's also something comforting about seeing the series moving towards much better material. This is a much worse film than The Phantom Menace but as a Star Wars movie, I’ll take this sequel over its predecessor.
As The Clones Wars began, I wondered how I could have ever thought this was a good film. The dialogue kept getting worse, the plot holes kept getting wider until I reached serenity and enjoyed it. Not as it was intended but that's fine. If you ever get a craving for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, get some of your friends together. Set aside ample amounts of time. You’re going to need at least a half-hour to discuss what you just saw, and then, to cleanse your pallet (and restore some faith into the franchise) you’ll need another 2 hours to view the follow-up micro-series: Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It’s the only way to do it. (On DVD, December 4, 2015)

First Footage From Marvel Studio's 'The Marvels' Hits D23 Expo
Tumblr media
We have our very first look at the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Marvels from the D23 Expo. The Marvels is set for release on July 28, 2023, and will feature Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, and Samuel L. Jackson. This will serve as the sequel to Captain Marvel and Marvel has been very secretive about its plot. As of now, we know relatively nothing about the film; however, we do know it will feature a team of superpowered women known as "The Marvels." D23 has given us our first look at The Marvels and several other projects. The footage was taken by fans in attendance at D23 and features clips and behind-the-scenes insights into the film. The film is described as "Full comic book madness" and we get to see a bit of that in the footage. The project is currently in production and is on track to hit its July 28, 2023 release date. No word on the plot or any significant details; however, this first look should be enough to satisfy fans until we learn more. You can see the entire sizzle reel from the D23 Expo below: https://twitter.com/BRMarvelNews/status/1568293673913446400?ref_src=twsrctfwtwcamptweetembedtwterm1568293673913446400twgr183c05569c2d84061d171ebfa0d34bf278df6c65twcons1_&ref_url=httpswww.murphysmultiverse.comd23-new-marvel-studios-teaser-offers-first-glimpse-at-x-men-97-and-the-marvels I think the footage from The Marvels is great. Some of it was from past projects like Wandavision, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel, but I think there is some new stuff in there. Marvel is usually pretty secretive about their projects and The Marvels is no exception. We have very little information about the film and even the rumor mill is pretty quiet. Given the Skrulls' involvement in Captain Marvel, it's likely that The Marvels could tie into the upcoming series Secret Wars with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn. That's simply conjecturing but it makes sense given what we know. It's also possible that The Marvels could expand the MCU Cosmic universe seeing that Captain Marvel as a character spends most of her time in space. Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau are more terrestrial characters but this could be their chance to see the greater universe. Hopefully, we'll get more information on the film in the coming months, but you can catch The Marvels when it hits theaters on July 28, 2023. Source: Marvel News via Twitter  Read the full article

Unbreakable (2000)
Tumblr media
M. Night Shyamalan’s take on the superhero genre is one of his best films. Unbreakable is smart and has a jaw-dropper of an ending.
When David Dunn (Bruce Willis) escapes from a train wreck without a single scratch, Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) is convinced it’s because he’s special: the real-life equivalent of a comic book superhero.
Almost all of M. Night’s films are about two topics and the unexpected way they intersect. An alien invasion and a preacher who’s lost his faith. A family stranded on a hostile planet and a son trying to prove himself to his father. A trio of women trying to escape their abductor and the idea that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Same here. While on the surface “Unbreakable” is about a man who might be a superhero (for a lack of a better term) it’s also about a person who finds their purpose in life. I love superhero films, but the first installments are usually my least favorite. I want to see the acts of heroism. I’m less interested in their personal life with the obligatory love interest, the villain whose origin is tied with the hero’s, the development of the costume, etc. Particularly with modern superhero films, it feels as if what we're watching is just the building to something else. Not this time.
While Unbreakable contains elements of fantasy, this is a tale mostly grounded in reality. The characters feel genuine. Elijah is kind of sad, and your heart goes out to him when he finds this person he’s been looking for. David may be invulnerable on the outside but you’re worried for his personal life. There aren’t any big action sequences in the film but you’re captivated nonetheless.
My one criticism is that M. Night clearly wanted to include certain comic books and comic book characters in the story but couldn’t. That was outside of his control. What wasn't was the screenplay, which could've been adjusted accordingly. At a glance, you’d swear that Elijah is holding a copy of Action Comics #1 (the first appearance of Superman) but upon closer inspection, it’s some made-up title with the same font. He couldn’t get Marvel to allow him to show Amazing Fantasy #15 instead? You see Marvel Comic books everywhere else in the background, so why not? I know it seems like a small thing, but this picture is all about superheroes. Elijah collects them, it explores the topic deeply because it knows what we know and expect. M. Night is obviously knowledgeable about the subject which makes this detail stick out.
Unbreakable doesn't get the proper credit it deserves. There have been many superhero movies made since and few have approached their powers and characters with the same insight and self-reflection as this one. It isn’t big, but it feels personal, and that ending... it's one you can't forget. (Theatrical version on DVD, January 31, 2017)
