You twirl spaghetti on your fork, soft light illuminating the living room and your boyfriend’s bright eyes as you lose yourself in an explanation of your latest project at work. This was by far the most responsibility you’ve ever been given and while that was a little nerve-wracking, you’re more excited than anything.

“And once I get those drafts in, I’ll be able to—”

Your explanation is cut off by Austin’s lips on yours. Your brain buffers for a moment before you lean into the kiss, abandoning your plate on the coffee table in front of you to wrap your arms around his neck and pull him closer.

After what seems like hours of bliss, you finally pull away, dopey smiles on both of your faces. Your hands moves to cup his face, thumb stroking his cheek as you ask, “Not that I’m complaining, but… what was that for?”

Austin shrugs, turning to press a soft kiss to your palm before saying simply, “Not my fault you’re so cute, now is it?”

You feel your face heat up at the compliment, though your brow furrows in confusion.

“Cute? But it’s just a project, you’ve probably heard me talk about it at least a dozen times.”

He nods, humming an affirmation. “And every time you talk about it, you light up.” His blue eyes meet yours as he reaches to take your hand, the soft light turning his blonde locks a warm shade of gold as he continues, “I know I tell you you’re beautiful all the time, but seeing how excited and passionate you are about this… it’s honestly the most wonderful thing I’ve ever seen.”

You’re speechless as you process his words, and you fight the urge to hide your face in your hands, instead choosing to lean forward and hide your burning cheeks in the crook of his neck.

“I love you,” you mumble against his skin, the only reply you can think of to such a genuine expression of how Austin sees you.

You can hear the smile in this voice and feel the rumble of laughter that he tries to hide as he replies, “I love you, too.”

“Now,” He pulls you fully into his lap, his arms wrapping securely around you, “How about you tell me more about this project. You said you were waiting on some drafts?”

The small smile on your face transforms into a full-on grin as you dive into an explanation of authors and deadlines and the difference between line editing and proofreading, Austin listening intently the whole time.

Zelda was handed a doll. Abruptly, she remembered her manners.

“My name is Zelda. It is nice to meet you. What is your name?” She asked, a perfect repetition of the memorized words from her tutors.

“Link. That’s boring. Can we play now?” Link asked.

“Oh. Yes,” Zelda said. Link started moving her doll as Zelda sat waiting for instructions. When Link looked at her expectantly, Zelda pushed down her embarrassment and cleared her throat.

“How do we play?” Zelda asked.

“We’re playing knights. The bad guys are trying to capture you,” Link explained. She held up her doll’s arm, which had a pointed stick tied to the end. It was supposed to be a sword, Zelda realized.

“Okay.” Zelda moved her doll behind Link’s, away from where she was pointing her sword at the imaginary bad guys.

“Usually I wear my hair down with braids, yes. Sometimes I’ll put it up for training or if I need it out of the way for something, but I am proud of my hair and I put in a lot of work to take care of it.”

“My father taught me way back when I was young how he kept his so long and healthy. He would sit with me and brush through my hair and sometimes if I was good, he’d tell me stories about his victories and missions while he did it.”

Cipher also braids his hair as a displacement activity. If Infinite or Eggman ever scold or lecture him for anything, he won’t argue back, he sits and takes it and keeps his hands busy by putting tiny little braids in his hair or undoing ones he already has in. I don’t tend to draw it particularly detailed but if I were to render him in a style that allowed for that kind of detail, he’d have some natural loose curls and chunks of waves that come from where he’s taken out braids.

It took him forever to let anyone else touch his hair lol. When he was little little, like toddler age, it was an absolute nightmare to get him to take care of it, and he probably ended up with a buzzcut that didn’t match the rest of his fur length a couple times rip- when Infinite returned though, Cipher’s behavioral problems became Infinite’s problem and that was one of the first things he Would Not Let Slide, because he will not be seen with a child who won’t even brush his own hair.

Eventually when it was ingrained into him that there would be consequences for slacking, Infinite stopped doing it manually and let Cipher do his own thing. Cipher still asks sometimes if he’ll do it. Usually the answer is no.

Every so often, Laika offers to do it instead

“Say that again”

Thank you for the request darling!

“I love you.”

You froze.

And from his apartment 7,000 miles away in Australia, on your laptop screen Austin froze too as he realized what he had just blurted out.

It wasn’t that he didn’t love you, or that you didn’t love him, it was just… neither of you had said it yet.

“I mean… I’m sorry, sweetheart, this is not at all what I thought the situation would be when I first sai—”

You cut him off as he scrambled to explain, happiness and warmth filling your chest so full you thought you might burst.

“Say that again.”

The words tumble out of your mouth like you can’t say them fast enough. You want him to say it again and again and again, now that he’s said it you never want him to stop.

Even from the other side of the world, his smile has the ability to make your toes curl as he looks directly into the camera and says, softly and deliberately, “I love you.”

You can see a soft blush rising to his cheeks, and you can feel your own face heating up as you reply “I love you, too.” You can barely get the words out around the giant smile on your face, but you know he knows what you mean.

You can see his eyes moving, and you smile at the thought of him taking in every detail of your face on the screen as his eyes return to looking directly into the camera, like he’s looking right at you, and he says softly, “I can’t wait to tell you that in person.”

In 2023 I recovered from an aortic dissection that occurred in late November 2022, got diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, had another surgery, as a result of that surgery lost my voice for several months and tho I got it back it's still a little fucked up and singing's not really going to happen again, got half of my neck paralyzed, got Horner's Syndrome, got fired, apparently I broke my toe the other week, and so on and so on....
