My window to order was starting to narrow, so I finally pulled the trigger on the Captain Accreditation License prop I'd been eyeing for my Batuu Bound birthday outing coming up. It's such a silly little detail, but the reviews are filled with people talking about getting to use it in Galaxy's Edge when the Stormtroopers stop them to ask to see some identification, which sounds like a fun interaction. And like, I can make a great deal of soft kit, I can even put together my own greebles out of foam -- but laser engraving is way outside my wheelhouse and tool access.
But before I could order it, I had to come up with a bunch of info to go on it, like name, home planet, ship type, that sort of thing. I had a basic idea of what sort of character I wanted to portray with my outfit for Batuu, but filling out the info for the pilot's license really made me lock down a bunch of details, which eventually evolved into full on original character creation.
It also got me started in learning to read Aurebesh, the Star Wars transliteration alphabet, but that's a whole other rabbit hole, lol.
Character wise, I started with my absolute love of piloting the Falcon in Smuggler's Run (my desire to do so again was one of the major reasons for deciding to do this for my birthday) and my fav in the sequel movies, Benicio Del Toro's "D.J." character. (The very brief political commentary about weapons manufacturers profiting off both sides of the war, and his little "live free, don't join" axiom are just so amazing, I still cannot believe we got that in a Star Wars movie.)
I also took into account that the timeframe for Galaxy's Edge is between Ep 8 and Ep 9, in roughly 34 or 35 ABY (years after the Battle of Yavin, at the end of Ep 4), and that I want to do the lightsaber building activity at Savi's Workshop the day we visit. The Etsy listing for the license also had an interesting little note about choosing a homeworld, calling out that 'because of well-known galactic events' Alderaan would only be an option for characters over the age of 40 or so. That comment got my mental gears turning, and sent me down the path of researching the year that Disney's Batuu is set in, etc.
At that same time, I was trying out different potential hairstyles for keeping my waist-length hair controlled during a day at Disneyland while still looking Star Wars-y. I tried a couple of Rey inspired hair styles, but eventually settled on something much more like Leia's looks in Ep 5 and Ep 6, with multiple braids wrapped around the crown to form a full circle. It's easy and comfortable and will keep my hair from tangling and works well with my hooded wrap thing, so I decided that hairstyle would be part of my look, and part of my character building.
So at that point I had: pilot, politically unaffiliated, soon to own a lightsaber, emulating Princess Leia and/or Alderaanian hairstyles, and grew up mostly after the fall of the Empire and probably wouldn't remember (or only just barely remember) the destruction of Alderaan. On that last point I was splitting the difference slightly -- if I translated my real age now into the Star Wars timeline (and Galaxy's Edge being set in ~35 ABY), then I would have been roughly 8 years old when Alderaan was destroyed. But in reality, I was born shortly after Ep 5 came out, and my earliest memories of Star Wars are knowing all about the movies, playing Star Wars make-believe with other kids in the neighborhood, and being excited that Ep 4 was going to be airing on TV.
After a lot of noodling on this, while sewing or driving or trying to fall asleep, the character started to come together in my head. Her mother was born and raised on Alderaan, but around age 20 (in 2 or 3 BBY, roughly) met a dashing young pilot on a freighter passing through, fell in love, and left Alderaan to be with him. They got married and lived mostly in the hyperspace lanes for a couple years, jumping from place to place. When she found out she was pregnant, she temporarily went back to Alderaan to be with her family and have her baby there. In the last year before the Battle of Yavin, she had a baby girl she named Samæni Ray, and after a few weeks she and the baby left Alderaan to meet up with her husband again.
So none of them were on Alderaan when the Death Star targeted and destroyed the planet. In the wake of the tragedy, the Alderaanian diaspora would have pulled together all across the galaxy, trying to get word of anyone who might have survived. And then, a miracle: Princess Leia somehow survived! The princess that Samæni's mother had grown up idolizing from afar, someone similar to her in age and physical appearance (pictures of my real mother from the 1970s bear a striking resemblance to Carrie Fisher in the same time period) -- the princess that Samæni's mother had loved for as long as she could remember, she not only survived but she stepped up to lead the Resistance against the Empire!
You know those people in real life who like, collected merchandise about Princess Diana? Yeah, that's Samæni's mom, but with Princess Leia, lol.
The war to overthrow the Empire only lasted for another 5 years or so, ending with the Battle of Jakuu in 5 ABY. So I figure Samæni might have vague early childhood memories of her parents celebrating the end of the war. They weren't actively members of the Resistance, and Samæni's father was much more politically neutral, preferring to focus on his work as a freighter pilot, but as far as Samæni's mother was concerned, anything Princess Leia did was a blessing on the galaxy, so it would have been a big deal for her, both during the war and in the years after as the New Republic was established.
During those early years of the New Republic, Samæni's father's freight business continued to do well, and she mostly grew up in her family's Gozanti-class cruiser, as they moved things from one planet to the next. She learned to pilot at her father's side, eventually sat for a pilot's license exam as a young adult, and then struck out on her own. Samæni's first job as a pilot was for a company that operated light freighters as party ships, allowing those with modest disposable income to see the galaxy in style but without the expense of a yacht cruiser. (The company probably had a ridiculous tagline like: "From here to thar with an open bar!")
Since those early jobs-for-hire, Samæni saved up enough money to buy her own little light freighter and start an inport/export business in which she (and her partner Jack) go to outer rim worlds to buy antiquities, oddities, and rare objects and bring them back to an upper-middle class clientele in the core worlds and inner rim. Their current ship is a bit of an antique itself, a Kazellis-class light freighter that is flashy enough to fit in in the nicer areas of Coruscant, but hard-working and easily repairable enough to take Samæni and Jack to all those far-flung worlds with treasures to acquire. Their ship has room for some larger pieces, but most of the cargo area has been converted into full-time living quarters, since they rarely stay planet-side for very long.
Their home-port is the ecumenoplis planet of Denon, an inner-rim world that sits at the intersection of two major hyperspeed trade routes. Denon was the closest thing to a homeworld that Samæni had growing up, and her parents have since retired to the equatorial area of the planet, in a community with a lot of other retired pilots and haulers and ship mechanics. (Her father's favorite local cantina is named for the CEC catalog part number for a replacement hyperdrive lever. He and all his old pilot buddies think it is hilarious.)
Samæni's mother continues to talk about Princess Leia like they are close friends (despite never actually having met her), and keeps informed on the rise of the First Order and the resistance to it mostly because she has set up HoloNet news alerts for General Organa. But Samæni takes more after her father in that regard, doesn't particularly care about politics or taking sides in any civil war, other than how it impacts business. The destruction of the Hosnian system by the First Order's Starkiller Base is enough to push Samæni towards siding against the First Order, but she still isn't about to rush out to join the Resistance, either.
Her pilot's license lists Denon as her homeworld, and it would take some dedicated digging to find that her planet of birth is actually Alderaan. She only lived there for the first few weeks of her life, and her only memory of it is how sad it's always made her mother. The traditional hairstyles and the stories about Princess Leia are really the only parts of the culture that she inherited. Samæni has never wanted to talk about being from Alderaan with anyone, and as the Empire's successor has come to power in the last few years, it's seemed even more dangerous to let anyone outside of close friends and family know that she is technically a survivor of the last time a galactic power was going around destroying planets.
Samæni and Jack are heading to the outer rim world of Batuu to visit Dok Ondar's Den of Antiquities, and follow up on a tip about Savi's crew of 'scrap metal' gatherers, in case there's something there that might sell well on a core world. Arriving to find that both the Resistance and the First Order have a presence in Black Spire Outpost will be less than ideal, but Samæni and Jack have been to enough rough ports across the galaxy that they know how to keep their heads down and stay out of trouble.
And hey, if First Order troopers stop to ask them for ID, Samæni will have a genuine pilot's license to show them. ;)
#Batuu Bounding#Star Wars original character#2024 mood#my original characters#Samæni Ray#Samaeni Ray#pronounced sa-MAHN-ee#the spelling was a whole thing -- I didn't want it to be a real-world name or place AND to look good written in Aurebesh#but there's an Aurebesh letter for the combined ae vowel sound that makes it 6 letters long instead of 7#and with that spelling the only real-world thing that comes up with a google of it is an Icelandic word. Virkjun og jarðhitalög í hættu vegna eldgossins við Grindavík, 2023.
The upper photo is looking toward the location of the eruptions from about 15 km away but taken 3 months before the lava flows began. The power plant, which stretches over a considerable area, and the geothermal heating system serving SW Iceland are both under severe threat with the main road leading to them already cut by lava flows. The Icelandic government has constructed dikes to divert the lava, but that is uncertain protection.
Having recently read the novel The Fires by Sigríður Hagalín Björnsdóttir (sadly in English, for my command of Icelandic is feeble to say the least) gives me a strong desire to see the volcanic activity currently ongoing on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Wish I could hop on an Iceland Air plane, but that is not going to happen.

4: Do your parents approve of your music?
they’re think it’s crazy junkie music but they’re proud that I’m not mainstream (both have a unique taste, too) I mean my father likes Mongolian steppe music, music from the moai isles, musicians from the mountains in Peru <- fav, especially Iceland, literally from every corner of the world -except the country were we come from- … but I also catched him listening to T*ylor Sw*ft and K-Pop, J-Pop, Canto-Pop by the way we listen to lots of Palestinian AND jewish tunes lately
(sorry, I drifted away from the actual question)
32: If you had to listen to only one genre of music for the rest of your life, what would it be?

An Ḧwgly
Here are the Ḧwgly (countries) I have named (in An Kxo) so far in the Shadow World:
Worldbuilder's Note: Due to geographical reasons continents in the SW are divided where oceans would be on Earth. However it is also hard to divide up some places in this way because they are not individually named on every map so some places are left nameless or undivided for the time being. Also the name of a country means that main landmass and not that landmass and islands

Blog 08: Sense-Making of Nature Interpretation
Hey everyone, and welcome back for another blog post. In today’s prompt we are discussing the most amazing things we know about nature. For me, what comes to mind first would be the magnificent northern lights. Though I have never had the chance to see them in person, I can tell how breathtaking they would be just from pictures, videos, and descriptions.
Tumblr media
The northern lights are scientifically known as aurora borealis, meaning the light of dawn. They can be seen from the northern hemisphere in regions such as Canada, Alaska, Russia, Norway, and Sweden since these places cover the auroral oval (Waldek & Dobrijevic, 2022). However, since auroral activity is not always consistent, the oval can shift. An aurora refers to a natural light display projected in the sky (National Geographic, 2023). They can appear when charged solar wind particles from the sun approach the Earth as solar wind. These particles are able to interact with the Earth’s magnetic field (National Geographic, 2023). Most of this solar wind gets blocked by the magnetosphere, but some ions do get trapped. The area where ions are trapped in the atmosphere is called the ionosphere. Within the ionosphere, nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the Earth’s atmosphere collide (National Geographic, 2023). The energy from this collision creates the fascinating glowing lights we see as the northern lights. The colours of an aurora are influenced by altitude, as well as the atoms that are involved (National Geographic, 2023). oxygen atoms tend to produce a red colour, however this is rare as it happens only when the ions are striked high in the atmosphere. Commonly, oxygen produces green/yellow auroras. When hydrogen and helium atoms are striked, blue and purple hues can be seen (National Geographic, 2023).
Auroras have a deep meaning in several cultures as well. In Iceland, it is thought that looking at the northern lights directly would cause your child to become cross-eyed (Berg, 2023). In Finland, the Sami Indigenous people believe that the lights must be respected (Berg, 2023). In their culture, the auroras are considered to be living beings, and that misfortune would come upon you if you were to disrespect them (Berg, 2023). As I have mentioned before in Blog 7, music is also an important part of the Sami Indigenous culture as they communicate through song, by singing yoiks (Gray et al., 2001).
The northern lights are just one of nature’s several wonders. As interpreters, it is necessary for us to appreciate and understand the elements of nature in order to share our findings with our audiences (Beck et al., 2018). By surrounding ourselves in nature’s beauty, we can build a profound connection to it. As I continue to grow as an interpreter, I hope to both inspire and inform others about culture & nature (Beck et al., 2018).

Further Recom. + Notes: Humanizing sex work (SW) & the threat of the law
youtube
youtube
The Nordic Model, partial decriminalization…How it relegates sex workers to a space of precarity?
(Sweden, Norway, Iceland, N. Ireland, Canada) — selling sex is not illegal but buying sex or profiting from the SW of somebody else is… sometimes referred to as “ending demand” & “exit services” are set up to try and help get SW out of the industry — it is seen by many as a very progressive & feminist way of protecting SW
Issue: a worker could come forward with complaint but a client couldn’t (say especially if you want to report a child being used) + ^selling of sex itself is not a problem but all the parallel activities are criminalized, which leads SW living under the constant threat of police violence & the danger of black market
Whereas legalization would require a lot of licensing, maybe specific venues, and tends to lead a sort of brothel system… creates a two-tier system where if you don’t have the money to afford the licenses & fees or the the right ways, then that leads to criminalization or the pressure to work for some wealthy capitalist who has the money to own a brothel & pay for all their licensing in exchange for them to be under his thumb
^ impacts marginalized communities (trans, queer, LGBTQ+ communities, homeless, immigrants, racialized, disabled)
Although public health is often a concern when it comes to SW, it’s usually approached only in terms of risk of STD… there isn’t much discourse about police violence, deportations, evictions, and poverty, all of which are hazardous to health (less about the health of the workers themselves but more about the imagined health of the community)
Wider structural problems: main issue is the stigma, eviction, lack of healthy mental health care facilities, gynecologist
AGAINST DECRIMINALIZATION: not about morality!!!
There is an argument that if the money is the only consent (you wouldn’t do it otherwise), then all SW is rape… but could we say the same for the lack of “enthusiastic consent” as actors? Difference between sexual intimacy as job v sexual assault at workplace
SW don’t do “productive work,” so, they shouldn’t sell themselves since there is nothing valuable produced except for $$ — emotional aspect is also part of the service world, thinking of labor of only in terms of products & manufacturing is bs
concern of sending a bad message — it sends the message that women’s bodies are for sale to men (ignores all the women who pay for sex & all the men who pay for sex with other men, & all the people who pay SW for things that aren’t really sex)... even if a women chooses to do it… still doesn’t mean it’s a feminist cause, if you’re choosing to buy into this very patriarchal & misogynistic industry, you’re reinforcing the idea that women exist for male consumption (which isn’t just an abstract concern about optics but an idea that regularly gets women of all backgrounds harassed & even killed)
Post WWII in N. America, there were heightened concerns about the future of the nation that coalesced in concerns about the proper sexual development of teenagers
A strong nation = strong families guided by a monogamous, heterosexual, reproductive/procreative couple
Role of sex ed.:
Abstinence-only: often argues that sex before marriage is harmful & that having more than 1 sex partner is wrong & destructive
Abstinence-plus: highlights abstinence as the only sure way to avoid pregnancy/STIs (teaches about safe sex practices but rarely pleasures)
Importance of comprehensive sex ed.: teaches about safe sex practices, LGBTQ sex, casual sex (some curricula teach about pleasure but not all)
Florida’s “Don’t say gay bill,” legislation to outlaw the teachings of LGBTQ
The conservative pathologize, if not criminalize — sex & sexuality as a threat
^these political/religious narratives lead to laws criminalizing non-normative forms of sex — sex work
Riley Reyes, adult performer, chair of Adult Performer Advocacy Committee (a labor group by and for adult performers — APAC)
SWERF: sex work excluding radical feminist… entering popular usage & leftist spaces
In the book, “Prostitution Policy in the Nordic Region,” scholars May-Len Skilvrei & Charlotta Holmstrom say that there really isn’t such a thing as “the” Nordic Model… pimping is legal yet landlords & friends of SW are vulnerable to pimping charges since the law cannot distinguish between the third parties who are helping & the law parties who are hurting
Inconsistencies in law protection can be better understood from thinking of Nordic model as a philosophical approach than a legal one
SESTA & FOSTA are federal bills in the US that have criminalized certain kinds of sexual speech on the internet — illegal to talk about sex or SW on online platform & they’ve made the platforms liable for that speech — say selling sex on YouTube, then YouTube could be criminalized… that is why craigslist shut down their personal ad section & why tumblr is no longer a place where sex exists
Book “Sex at the Margins,” anthropologist Laura Agustin — how “trafficking” & “rescued” are used synonymously — in actuality, you’ve been arrested, imprisoned, your wages have been confiscated, & you’ve been deported back to a country you didn’t even want to be in without trial or even charges… “anti-trafficking operations”
^ if the law wants to cut down on migrant SW & immigrant workers of all kinds, being exploited & endangered, decriminalize the human moment — no more detention centers, visas, language tests, income requirements…
Decriminalizing SW… sex trafficking would still be fully illegal, labor rights violations are labor rights violations, & people under SW would be able to report
Some do it for enjoyment, some do it for money (poverty or SW)... survival
LEGAL to buy & sell sex… but if you do it in a flat with someone else (brothel-keeping), illegal… outdoors (solicitation), illegal… advertise (depending on where you do it), might be illegal… help a SW book gigs because they can’t use a phone, if you borrow money from a SW, if you’re a driver or a bodyguard of a SW, then you’re profiting from someone else’s SW & technically that is pimping, which is illegal
ILLEGAL… working in a flat with someone else & having a security guard would be safer but it is against the law. If you’re working outdoors and want to talk to clients about prices and condom use before you get in a stranger’s car… must do it in a rush since if you’re spotted, you could be charged with solicitation or hit with a prostitute’s caution, which will show up on a background check
Is money taken away if police suspect (not prove) that it is based off of SW? Renters cannot rent to SW (illegal… eviction)? In Northern Ireland, you could face a potentially unlimited fine, eviction from home, be charged — all w/o trial for doing something that is completely legal.
Testimony on being arrested in the video (migrants being deported w/o trial, arrested w/o clothes)
There’s an unspoken assumption I think that arrest, imprisonment, or threatening somebody with those things is morally neutral… but they are forms of violence since the SWs are harmed by it.
Book: Playing the Whore, Melissa Grant
Note that since the 70s & earlier, many SW consistently identified the police, not clients, as the major source of violence in their lives.
“It doesn’t feel like that these laws are there to protect people since they clearly don’t, it just feels like they want to see SW disappear”
There’s distinction between “SW is violence” — no amount of SW is ever okay & some kind of criminalization is the only answer — v “the sex industry features violence & exploitation” — we can have a chat on ways to reduce it
Radical feminist Julie Bindel & many others argue that SW is bad in itself… a lot of SW acknowledge their exploitation, not wanting to do SW, & yet argue that decriminalization is the best way to reduce them… if you want to be an abolitionist, it is not enough to say Sex industry features violence but that SW is violence
How SW accommodates disabled communities
Oliver discusses the complicated patchwork of the demonizing, patronizing, and problematic American laws against world’s oldest profession with a rather humorous undertone. He refrains from moral policing sex work and argues that it is inarguably labor (LastWeekTonight). His critical and human-rights centered approach allows me to apply
Oliver touches on the absurdism of the “legality” which is established based on camera presence, how consensual sex for money or goods off camera remains illegal (LastWeekTonight).
Oliver critiques the wrongful premise of the impossibility of consent in practice and reduction of all sex workers to exploited “victims,” the cliché of sex work being synonymized with trafficking, police and white supremacists selling themselves as “the saviors,” and the hyper-surveillance and mass incarceration of sex workers (LastWeekTonight).
Oliver recounts how the legal processes and policies harm those that they claim to protect — the irony of police sting operations in the United States since they are fundamentally arguing that police should be able to have sex for their jobs legally to stop other people from having sex for work.
The threat of arrest for people of color, the provision of prohibition against loitering for the purpose of prostitution (a stop & frisk policy for sex workers — NYPD has interpreted completely legal activities like talking to pedestrians or dressing “provocatively” as the basis for an arrest... seized condoms and used that as evidence of prostitution or charged with the misdemeanor of possessing an instrument of crime/criminalizing condoms... unsafe sex), and how criminal record limits sex workers’ future for both people who want remain or leave the field — for example, a woman in Alaska has a record as a sex offender since was charged with trafficking herself because the law changed from “promoting prostitution” to “sex trafficking.”
that just like with any other job, fundamentally the only way to make sure that people have a choice in the way they earn money is to make housing affordable, healthcare accessible, and to not burden marginalized people with a criminal record

Pokémon Legends Arceus Theory
Y’all remember that “found footage”-style reveal trailer we got for Hisuin Zorua and Zoroark?
I’m pretty sure that the unnamed and unseen person recording it is Ingo.
He’s explicitly stated to be another time traveler, but unlike the player character, he’s lost his memory and has no Arc phone.
We can see that the phone is lost during the filming; from the environment, it’s clear he’s in the Alabaster Icelands, where the Pearl Clan base camp is located.
It is also the site of Lake Acuity, home to Uxie.
And according to one of the Pokédex entries:
Known as "The Being of Knowledge." It is said that it can wipe out the memory of those who see its eyes.
So being attacked by Zoroark, and then, perhaps, seeing the eyes of Uxie, would account for the condition of Ingo’s clothing, the lack of a phone, and the loss of his memories.
Is this conclusive without-a-doubt? No; as has been pointed out to me, Ingo would know damn well what a Zorua is. The Hisuin variant looks very much like its Unovan counterpart.
Still, the rest of the evidence does point to Ingo being our camerman. Which is both delightful and also very rude, Pokémon, how dare.
quick edit
forgot to mention Hisuin Sneasel can be found in the Alabaster Icelands, so it could very well be that Lady Sneasler found him and brought him to the Pearl Clan. Just bringing it up. :3

Princess Mononoke, twins, barber camp, and The Last Movie Stars....a list
 Happiest of Fridays!
This week I have been getting back into the swing of things after being on vacation in SW Michigan, next to Alabama it is my favorite place on Earth. Visiting dear friends, celebrating a marriage, and playing with friend’s babies is always a joy. I’ve included some photographs of my time in MI. I hope, as always, that you enjoy! The list below has a bunch of random bits and bobs as always.
·      Barber Camp teaches life lessons (wapt.com). Our capital city of Jackson, with a rich and dark and beautiful and sad history….is deeply struggling at present. The murder rate per capita is higher than anywhere in the US. And in the last month or two…it’s been teenagers and children. And it saddens me so incredibly much and I personally have no clue what should be done. But-I do know that there are so many people within the city that are working so hard to help. And Tracey Williams is doing just that. Check out her story in the link.
· The case for a shorter workday - BBC Worklife. The logic for moving to a six hour work day is definitely there. “Norway and Denmark have workweeks shorter than 40 hours, and are respectively the second- and seventh-most productive countries in the world.”
·      The empire the Aztecs couldn't conquer - BBC Travel. I haven’t yet made it to the Americas and their ancient history, so learning about the P'urhépecha Empire was fascinating.
·      Why Scottish women and Icelanders are closely linked - BBC Reel. Aud the Deepminded, a warrior.
·      Ashley Ness Discovers She's Pregnant with 2 Sets of Identical Twins | PEOPLE.com. This is incredible, a one in ten million chance!
·      'Perfect fit': Halifax woman unknowingly buys used roller skates she owned 40 years ago | CBC News, what an incredibly fun story!
·      Princess Mononoke: The masterpiece that flummoxed the US - BBC Culture. This film is my favorite of Miyazaki, yet I have never been able to quite put my finger on why it was until I read this article. This quote sums it up for me, "Whereas Japanese culture is more based on a sense of impermanence. There’s a cycle and a feeling that you have to enjoy what you have. It’s not necessarily a bad world, but it's a complicated world." “It is an echo of an enduring theme of Miyazaki's later work: a rallying call to children, and perhaps to himself, that no matter how bad the world gets, no matter how tempting it is to fall into fatalism or despair, you must keep on going.”  Also, pro tip…..never watch the American version, watch the Japanese version with English subtitles.
·      Princess Mononoke (Hime) Joe Hisaishi in Budokan - YouTube, extraordinarily beautiful soundtrack.
·      The Last Movie Stars | Official Trailer | HBO Max - YouTube. A documentary on the life of and careers of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward looks to be fascinating.
·      THE HU - Black Thunder Part 1 (Official Music Video) - YouTube. The cinematography of their music videos is top notch. I love how they tell their history through music by blending traditional music with metal.
·      Street Food: USA | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube. This Netflix show looks great, another road trip may be needed.
For fun, my top 4 on repeat from Spotify:
MOVE by TNX, Surface Pressure by Jessica Darrow, Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga, and Planet by Franko Gonzo.
Enjoy your weekend!
