Safe Foods
2024
Aluminum foil, stone clay, Hershey’s kisses wrappers and plumes, found objects, cardstock, spray paint, acrylic paint, glass microbead paint
inspired by David Seltzer, Sea Salt/Lemon Sage
With celiac disease, every meal is a risk. Gluten hides everywhere, from restaurant griddles to soy sauce and licorice. Since my diagnosis, I’ve identified “safe foods” I can always trust not to set off an intestine-destroying immune response: whole fruit, plain potato chips, most hot dogs, Hershey’s chocolate. When I’m stranded and hungry, I look for them. Drawing on the bright colors and abstract inedibility of David Seltzer’s Sea Salt/Lemon Sage, I made my safe foods easier to find by rendering them in an ANSI-inspired worksite safety palette. Use the headlamp for the full high-visibility experience.
Exciting news: This sculpture is on display at the ArtsWorcester gallery show Feast: Call and Response with the Fitchburg Art Museum through April 21, 2024.
Even more exciting news: the Fitchburg Art Museum selected it, along with nine other pieces from the show, to exhibit this summer!

@retroreflective asked: “you can’t hit me while the club penguin pizza parlor music is playing,” / I feel legally obligated to send you this one. from harley :)  // shit heard at art school pt. 3
Tumblr media
“WH— when did y-” Peter pauses from where he was about to... well, playfully hit Harley in the middle of the lab for messing with him again, and sure enough, the music is playing RIGHT from his phone— there’s not much room to catch himself before the laughter starts spilling out, and before he knows it, Peter is just doubling over instead. “C’mon! That’s cheating and you know it— you can’t just DISTRACT me with the jazzy club penguin tunes! Why do you even have that pulled up anyways? I mean— it’s- it slaps, agreed, but why?”

Spookami 2023 [Prompt 14 - Eyes]
I'm not gonna be the one to say it out loud, but... there's something... off about the captain in Sei-An, right?
Drifting a little bit into headcanon territory here, but you're really gonna tell me you had a whole race of folks living on the moon and expect me not to think they'd have some uncanny shit going on? Clearly you don't know me very well.
(Shading with night-time lighting is turning out to be a lot of fun y'all)

SOLAS Retroreflective Tape Dubai
Tumblr media
SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) retroreflective tapes are used on ships and other marine vessels to improve visibility and safety in low light conditions. These tapes are made of a material that reflects light back towards the source, making them highly visible even in the dark. In the Dubai, SOLAS retroreflective tapes are required to be used on all commercial vessels operating in the country's waters, in order to comply with international maritime safety regulations. These tapes are available from various suppliers in the Dubai and can be applied to a variety of surfaces on a ship, such as the deck, railings, and lifeboats.

watched nimona. cried. am absolutely going to steal some things for ava. especially most of (with obvious exceptions, which is also true of ava) their forms having some little bit of pink in them no matter what. like when nimona is mimicking bal at the start but the grey streak in his hair is pink? that’s perfect.

i haven't proofread this one yall be kind:(
Tumblr media
the night air was stickily humid, the kind of weather that warranted open windows and skimpy night dresses. the kind that lured a certain spider back into your home, breaking many personal vows to just leave you alone. you had kept the room empty, dark, only dimly lit by the reflective light of the moon casting shadows through the lace curtains you'd left open - an invitation to his presence. it was a way of making him comfortable, even with the colourful chrome shielding his identity, the darkness just made him feel that bit more safe.
your thin sheets had been thrown to the side, only barely tickling your ankles as you watched him. your dark hair strewn over your shoulder, lipstick smudged and the spaghetti straps of your teasingly thin, black nightdress falling over your shoulders.
he breathed deeply, lips parting against the mesh of his suit as you ghosted yours over his. you were used to the retroreflective eyes of his suit, you almost felt as if you could see through them now. like you could see into him, past his physical appearance underneath the mask.
you ran a finger teasingly under the edge of the mask, bunching it around your fingers as you lifted it slightly. his breathing was steady, fingers gripping at your plush hips as you straddled him, giving you unadulterated control over him. you left it to rest just over his nose, revealing his almost paper-thin lips to you, pouted and swollen. you ran a thumb over the dip of his cupids bow, unusually defined. you rubbed gently at the almost lack of stubble decorating his top lip, biting back a smile at how new york city's spider-man was a boyish youth who could barely grow facial hair. your fingers were curled around his jaw,the deep red of your nails mixing with the ghostly pale of his skin,a perfect match to his costume. "what do you look like?" it was almost a whisper, your eyes trained on the big, white of his suit as if you could make contact with him that way.
he breathed deeply,"you know i can't,it wouldn't be--"
"no," you cut him off, leaning to press a wet kiss to the piece of fabric just above his cheekbone,"i don't want you to show me. just tell me."
he was dumbfounded for a moment, wetting his lips as he stared at you. what difference would a description make? after-all,you still wouldn't actually know.
"tell me,spider." you cooed, running your lips along his cheek,"what is it? big, brown eyes?" you moved to press a kiss to the tip of his nose,"a piercing blue?",another kiss to his eyebrow,"green?" you made contact with his eyes, pulling back slightly as if to ask him to answer you.
"brown,the first one."
you hummed at this, continuing to trail your lips toward his ear, wrapping them around the shell over his mask. "my favourite."
your declaration had him almost hopeful. "what about your hair?"
"it's also brown," he started, moving his head to try and chase your lips again, growing bored of you suckling at his clothed ear. "i guess you could say curly."
you pressed a chaste kiss to his lips, just to satiate him for the moment. "just my type, bug."
he let a breathy chuckle pass, one that had your ears pricking and your eyes flicking up to his face, not that you could really see his expression, anyway.
"you got any freaky birthmarks?"
"no." he sounded almost offended at the question.
"scars?"
"not any that you haven't already seen."
you hooked a leg around his waist, teasingly slow as you curled inwards, pulling him toward you. you leaned back on your elbows, making a complete show of the movement and showcasing your accentuated cleavage to him,the straps of your thin nightgown dangerously low.
"easy." he warns, conscious of the blaring city that needed to be patrolled just outside your window.
"what? afraid you might overstay your welcome?" the smirk you wore was sickly,it rattled peter so much he felt like his bones were overheating, pushing any kind of feelings beyond pure, animalistic attraction down before he even had chance to indulge.
"'thought i was always welcome, baby." he said it like a statement, leaning down to slot his body above yours. his right palm was flat beside your head, the dip in the bed causing your body to lay slightly lop-sided,your hip popping just enough to brush perfectly into the palm of his left hand, giving the flesh a soft squeeze.
you dodged his kisses, leaving him to press wet dots to your jawline as he whined beneath you. "don't you have a neighbourhood to be saving?"
"-not when i have a beautiful lady right here who needs my help." he was quick, running a clothed finger through your slick to emphasise his point.

The River Jordan and Sweetpea are electric engines on the first railway on Mars.
River Jordan was the first one built, being the product of a collaboration between the nations who established the colony.
Sweetpea was donated by a coronal aerospace guild and assembled onsite. Her parts were imported and her blueprints were crownmade, so her visage is coronal.
Visage and the nature of living transport
Engines take the image of their creators. Their faces are not organic, and are more like a vessel for helpful senses and communication tools.
They come alive soon after they are built, once out of eyeshot for any moment. Attempts to stare at a new engine to see it stir are foiled somehow (blinks, saccades, CCTV malfunction, momentary lapse in attention). Not all engines come alive, as their animacy is often (but not always) decided by the intent of the builder.
Living engines can assess their circumstances and make judgements based on them. They are useful in volatile situations as an expert second opinion on conduct and design, and are capable of sensing external and internal problems quickly.
In calmer periods, they may not get adequate stimulation, and their personalities may interfere with their efficiency. For this reason, railways have their preferences when they build and purchase engines.
The facial material ends at the surface of the machine and is inscrutable in composition—the material appears to be made of itself, and is unusable for any other purpose besides as an engine’s interface with the world. If damaged, the material heals. If removed, it disappears. The conceptual self-referentiality of engines’ faces, souls, and senses deter scrutiny.
Living machines exist as a fact of the universe. Their animacy is cloaked in an analysis-averting antimeme.
Human Engines
Engines designed and built by humans possess dual-pinhole pupils that dilate into an elliptical shape, granting them a broad field of view and tolerance of rapid changes in light levels (such as in going in and out of tunnels). Deep set zygomata allow them to look directly to their sides, and with the dual-pinhole setup, they maintain some depth perception in monocular sight. Their pupil shapes are hidden by their black irises, which absorb glare. They can see clearly to their front and sides, but can’t see up or down very well. A tapetum lucidum retroreflects incoming light back through their retinas, granting them vision in darkness. The nictitating membranes and long eyelashes protect the eyes from dust.
The chemicals engines are capable of detecting are relevant to their purpose, e.g. distinguishing coal, gasoline, diesel, and wood fires from their smoke but not being able to distinguish or detect food smells. Similar to how cats, obligate carnivores, have lost their ability to taste sugar due to its absence in their diet, but can taste ATP for its presence in meat—engines can parse environmental and industrial scents, but will have wildly varied responses to food and fragrant compounds, often being unable to notice them.
To investigate an aroma, they slightly lower their bottom lip to take air into their vomeronasal organ located behind the upper incisors.
Engines do not require oxygen, but if debris enters the nasal passage, human engines will sneeze to:
Ensure their voice resonates properly,
Keep their olfactory facilities clean, and
Indicate to engineers that particle buildup may have occurred in other places, such as the boiler tubes for steam engines.
Crown Engines
Just as the tongue is the only colored object on a human engine’s face for distinguishability, so are the teeth on coronal engines. The positions of the upper and lower jaw indicate tone, functioning in communication similarly to eyebrows.
Coronal engine eyes consist of an armored cornea surrounded by a cuticle and muscular eyelid. The cornea moves with the help of the embedded eyestalk supporting it. The cuticle is lubricated with an oil-based film and is less susceptible to irritation than the aqueous solution on human engine eyes. The undersides of the eyelids and surface of the cornea are covered in setae, preventing chafing and reducing airflow on the cornea. The hairs catch debris and are combed out by the lids with a puckering motion.
To make up for unenhanced vision by human engine standards, coronal engine hearing is advanced, allowing the listener to pinpoint sound sources through triangulation of the four inner ears. Coronal engines, too, channel sound through their incisors and into their internal ears via the acoustic windows at the hinge of each jaw.
Coronal engines achieve their sense of industrial smell through the gustatory papillae that line their choana and pharynx. They supplement their olfaction by introducing cool air behind the heat pits inside their nares.
Coronal engines’ thermoception is more efficient than living crowns, as coronal engines’ faces do not produce heat nearly proportional to their mass.
Conversely, the tines heat up significantly hotter than the crown average for unambiguity in temperature tones. The origin of the tine thermal energy appears to be redirected from excess produced by the machinery, or from the face’s temperature directly.
Extramodal senses
Engines are capable of listening from within their cabs with greater acuity than mere conduction of sound through the body would suggest. Other unsubstantiated sensory abilities include:
Discernment of water/fuel quality within the framework of taste though intake alone
Somatosensory awareness in the entire body, not just the face

My three parts of the Round Robin I recently took part in! The sketch I lined was originally by @mikanashii, and the one I colored was originally by @feliciadraws.
If I've learned anything from this collaboration, it's that I'm definitely the oddball out of the three of us. I feel like you can pretty much sum up each one of my contributions as "and then there's how Bamboo sees things!"
Lineart is still my enemy. Don't judge me.
