Judy Tenuta, a brash standup who cheekily styled herself as the “Goddess of Love” and toured with George Carlin as she built her career in the 1980s golden age of comedy, died Thursday. She was 65.
Tenuta died Thursday afternoon at home in Los Angeles, with her family around her, publicist Roger Neal told The Associated Press.
“She was a very funny, amazing performer,” Neal said, and it was always a “happy time to be around her.”Her heart-shaped face, topped by bouffant hair with a flower accent, conveyed an impression of sweet innocence that was quickly shattered by her loud, gravelly delivery and acidic humor, expletives included. The accordion she made part of her act was “an instrument of love and submission,” as she fondly called it.
She was among a generation of performers who drove the popularity of live comedy in clubs nationwide including the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, Laff Stop in Houston and Caroline’s in New York City. A typically male-dominated field found room for women, including Tenuta.
Tenuta gained national attention in 1987 with “Women of the Night,” a HBO special in which she starred with Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone, and Rita Rudner.

Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time Part 2
Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Eddie Munson x Female reader
Summary: A steamy game of Truth or Dare escalates between you and your best friend Eddie Munson. It becomes increasingly clear he will stop at nothing to get your attention, including obsessing over you, stalking you at work, and wearing skin tight leather pants. Anything it takes to have you come over a play a naughty game of Truth or Dare
Warnings: 18+ Smut, Eddie is a perv, obsessive, irresistible, flirty, soft dom Eddie and mean Eddie but in a sexy way *wink wink.* Face sitting, creampie, unprotected sex, overstimulation. Eddie is a bit of a stalker because he's obsessed with reader, raunchy drinking game, a healthy amount of exhibitionism. And A bunch of other sexy things I want to be a surprise, etc.
Author's note: I really loved writing the first part so much that I couldn't help but write another one, Eddie and Reader's relationship is very personal to me lol I'm literally fangirling over my own writing right now. Enjoy, and remember to reblog and comment, it really helps and def encourages me to write more + means a lot to me! <3
It had been a week since you and Eddie confessed your feelings for each other, well more or less that's basically what happened. Most nights he would call just to talk about his day and ask you about your day, an excuse to hear your voice and to keep tabs on you. One thing Eddie Munson was sure of was that he didn't want anyone asking you out, or even innocently flirting with you, that was off the table. Eddie thought he was being casual, only coming into Family Video when you were scheduled, but you caught on quick.
"Need help finding anything, Munson," you're leaning up against the horror section shelf, arms crossed over your chest.
Eddie was squatting with his elbows on his knees, trying to find god knows what, he was particular with his horror movies. Eddie's hair was in a low bun, loose strands rested on his cheeks. You fought back a dreamy sigh that threatened to blow your cover, 'play it cool', you thought to yourself.
You squat down beside Eddie, and finally he turns to you, "I would, but the service here sucks," he slaps his knees and stands up, smiling down at you.
You fake pout, "that's offensive, Munson. I keep this place organized, and I do a pretty damn good job at that considering you like to put everything out of order on purpose, just to fuck with me. You're a menace." A very cute menace, honestly.
Eddie did that on purpose, mix up all of the tapes in the horror and comedy section and then watch as you huffed and puffed, organizing them all over again while he watched sitting on top of the counter, usually talking to Steve and Robin. That was most nights, but Sunday nights like tonight you were always on your own, mainly because Sunday was the least busy night and it was an option to work this night. But you were nothing but persistent in the pursuit of moving out of Hawkins, saving up for your way out was on your mind as much as Eddie Munson was. Which was saying something, because you thought about both a lot, both involved escapism and the irony of it all mocked you.
You hold out your hand to Eddie and he yanks you up by your hand so fast you have to steady yourself when you knock into his chest, you scoff while he's clearly amused that you're both chest to chest again.
"Woah, you ok," Eddie steadies you by your waist. You feel like a puddle of feelings looking up at him, all you wanted to do was kiss that goofy grin off his face.
"I would be ok if you stopped rearranging my masterpiece," you cross your arms over your chest, defiant but playful. Your cover was still holding strong, while you were screaming on the inside.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Eddie puts his hands up in defense and chuckles.
"Yes you do, you know exactly what I'm talking about," you poke his chest with your finger.
"But when you organize the bottom shelves I always get the best view of London and France...and your underpants. You know that saying, right?"
"It's a children's rhyme...so yeah, I'm familiar. Why are you interested in my underpants anyways, Munson?" You weren't wearing any panties today and there's no way you were about to organize those VHS tapes in front of Eddie, you would never hear the end of it.
"Stop calling me that."
"Fine, what do you want me to call you?"
"Daddy," Eddie smirks and pokes his tongue out at you.
Your face heats up, you'd be lying if you said you hadn't thought about calling him that outside of your fantasies. "You're such a perv, Eddie oh my god," you turn around and storm to the back of the store, the employee break room just behind the door. Eddie follows behind you, staring at your ass, and making sure to close the distance between you two when you hit the door his crotch is on your ass. Your hand rests on the door knob, frozen in place. It had been a week since you two were this close, it was driving you both insane being so close and keeping the game at play. But now since you both were aware, the rules of the game had changed drastically. Eddie was braver now, blatantly driving you crazy because he knew he could afford to be more obvious and in your face about it.
"Somethin' important in that break room, baby," Eddie whispers in your ear and you can feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up in anticipation.
"I have to pee, Eddie." You fake annoyance, this was your only way to maintain your cool, otherwise you would've fucked him in the aisles already. You had half a mind to make the horror section look like a porno, which Family Video would never dare to carry, being a family friendly store and all.
"Can I watch," Eddie says, completely serious and intrigued. Part of him wonders if you would ever consider saying yes to that question.
"Gross, no" you swat him away with your clipboard, you had your checklist for closing the store in hand.
"You should add doing me on that checklist of yours, sweetheart. What do you say," Eddie smiles nudging you back with his elbow. You're both facing each other now and you can feel your breath grow shallow with each passing moment. You wanted to be all over him in that moment, but teasing him was all apart of the fun. He tortured you, so it was only right you got to torture him back.
"Shut up, Eddie," you roll your eyes at him, fighting back a smile. Because his smile was just so contagious, it was hard not to melt at. You turn around, barging into the break room, turned away from Eddie and immediately letting that smile escape you while he wasn't looking at you, butterflies in your stomach.
Careful to coax that smile away because you knew Eddie would follow close behind you, not letting you out of his sight. He was in a good mood today, but that was about to change. You knew the more you teased him the meaner he would get, and that was sort of your goal.
"I have a show this Tuesday," Eddie mentions, sitting down at the break room table, manspreading like some kind of Greek god.
"Yeah...so?" You stand above Eddie and the moment you're close enough for him to grab he pulls you into his lap.
"So you're going," Eddie's voice gets huskier, more demanding as he places a gentle hand on your chin, tilting your face to his. "I don't like your attitude, Princess. Do I have to be mean to get your attention, is that it?"
“M-Maybe,” you stammer, Eddie’s delighted at his new found discovery.
“Ah, I know what you are now, makes a lot of sense too. Hmm, I think I could use this to my advantage.”
“What I am, what do you mean by that?” You wiggle under Eddie’s gaze, his eyes were practically black whenever he was like this, it was mesmerizing as much as it was terrifying.
“You’re. A. Brat. See, you can’t even stop yourself from grinding yourself on my dick. You’re so needy, Princess,” Eddie moves you so that you’re straddling his waist, both of your legs gripping his hips for dear life.
“I thought I was a cocktease,” your voice is hushed, small compared to Eddie’s loud mouth.
“Oh, you are. That’s what you’ve been doing the moment I walked in here, acting like what happened a week ago was nothing. If you wanted to get a fucking rise out of me it worked, you’re coming home with me tonight. When’s your shift end, Princess?”
“In thirty minutes…”
“See you in thirty,” Eddie hops out of his seat, pulling you up with him as he stands, striding out of the room without looking back.
Eddie knew what you wanted now, which was reassuring, but there were still answers left blank whenever he thought about you and what your relationship meant. How far can you go with someone and still consider them a friend? One thing was clear, and that everything had changed between the two of you for good. Maybe you could still consider each other friends, but most friends didn’t spend all day fantasizing about the other. Eddie sat in his van, parked in front of your work, contemplating how insane this all was. He had never felt this crazy about someone. Never could he imagine being so consumed, and so obsessed with you. He had always seen you as beautiful, funny, smart, reliable, but it wasn’t until that game night where you two had first seen each other in a different light. Eddie thought about that night a lot, and wondered how intentional your advances were, or if it was just a pure accident.
Everyone was drunk, laughing and playing cards, when you came back from a night out you found Robin, Nancy, Steve, and Eddie all at the dining room table. Nancy called to you first and managed to ask if you wanted to be dealt in. You said sure and she dealt you a hand of cards, but then you noticed there were no more seats left.
You looked over at Eddie, his lap looked so comfortable and inviting, so sit-able. And so you were still tipsy from the bar, so you thought to yourself ‘fuck it,’ and sat down in Eddie Munson’s lap. Eddie was shocked, you were always so polite and friendly…but never this damn friendly. The pressure of your ass on his thigh made it hard not to get a boner, but he fought for as long as he could, trying to play it cool. No one said a word about it, they hardly even noticed, all distracted with drunk chatter.
“Comfortable, honey,” Eddie squeezes your waist playfully.
“You’re the best seat in the house, Munson,” you say, definitely not thinking about sitting on his face. You had drunk two glasses of wine, and while it was having an effect on you, you were completely aware of your actions, just more inclined to do them is all.
Eddie chuckles, “so I guess girl’s night was better than game night with us then…did you at least miss me,” Eddie fake pouts. He was always naturally flirty so there was nothing off about this, but now things suddenly felt different, dirtier. The way he squeezed your hips made you feel like you were doing something forbidden.
You rub your thighs together at his words, moving to straddle his thigh, your elbows on the table. Staring down at your cards you place one in the deck, everyone was too busy and caught up with conversation to see what was happening right in front of them. It was almost too easy, you thought about taking Eddie to your bedroom right then, no one would even suspect a thing if you said you were tired and wanted to turn in for the night.
“Of course I missed you, don’t be silly,” you rubbed yourself on Eddie’s thigh, testing the waters.
Eddie’s cock grows beneath you and you grind your ass on him, it goes on for about five minutes and Eddie’s doing everything in his power to keep social grace even though you were driving him crazy. Eddie stood suddenly and excused himself to the restroom. Little did you know at the time, he went to your bedroom to relieve himself instead, he left early holding his jacket over his pants to hide the dark patch on his jeans.
“Is he…alright,” Robin questioned, raising an eyebrow in your direction. And for a moment you thought you were about to get caught before anything had actually started. But then thankfully Robin shrugged it off and went back into a rant about the newest book she read and how bogus the ending was. You sighed quietly in relief and went about the rest of your night like normal.
Normal was a funny word, a concept really, a concept that didn’t exist between you and Eddie anymore. That’s why when you opened the passenger door to his van, you didn’t know what to expect.
“So, are you kidnapping me or something? Because I don’t have time for that, I have an air tight schedule, Munson.” You couldn’t help it, the word just slipped out of your mouth, it’s what you were used to calling him. That’s what Steve called him for a long time until eventually Eddie started calling Steve ‘Stevie,’ that’s when everyone followed suit on the first name and nickname basis.
If looks could kill, you’d be dead, the way Eddie stared you down made your stomach do little flips. He looked really hot when he was angry, and maybe subconsciously you wanted to rile him up more than originally intended.
“What did I tell you about calling me that? It’s Eddie, got it?”
“Yes, sir,” you salute him with your hand and he scoffs back at you, muttering something along the lines of ‘that’s more like it’ under his breath while backing out of the parking space.
The ride to Eddie’s place was quiet, he moved into a one bedroom apartment a year ago, it wasn’t fancy but it was homey and modest. Eddie opens the front door for you, letting you go ahead of him, always looking for a chance to gawk at your ass. Eddie didn’t care about being subtle about it anymore, he pinches your ass the moment you step in front of him, cackling when you jump in surprise.
“Eddie! What was that for?!”
“Your butt is really pinchable. I can't help myself, but hey I almost forgot I have a surprise for you,” Eddie smiles mischievously and runs to his cabinets to fish out some shot glasses and a bottle of whiskey. He was planning on you coming over, he had deep cleaned and reorganized his whole apartment in a nervous rush two hours beforehand. But he would never admit that outright.
You cross your arms over your chest, narrowing your eyes at him, “what’s that for?” Stupid question, you knew what. Eddie wanted to play a game.
“I have a drinking game I’ve been dyin’ to play with you, honey,” bingo, fucking jackpot, you were right.
Eddie looked downright stunning tonight, and you finally have a moment to admire him under good lighting. A Black Sabbath muscle t-shirt that left little to the imagination with leather pants, god how could you only notice now he was wearing leather fucking pants?!
“Like what you see, doll,” Eddie winks and hands you a shot glass and brings you to his room, leading you by one hand, and holding his shot glass and the whiskey bottle in the other.
Eddie’s room was…clean? Strange and unusual behavior from a man that would usually forget empty beer cans in his room.
“Weird,” you mumble under your breath. Eddie’s making himself comfortable, head up against the headboard, pouring himself a shot and motioning for you to set your shot glass down and pours one for you as well. “So this game you’ve been dying to play with me…what exactly is it,” you ask, crawling on Eddie’s lap and making yourself comfortable straddling him for the second time today.
“Truth, Dare, or Drink sweetheart?” Eddie’s grinning from ear to ear, prepared Truth’s and Dare’s already in mind.
“Truth,” you say instinctively, already regretting your choice you wince, knowing what’s bound to come up. Maybe Eddie will go easy on you, or at least wait a few rounds to bring out the big guns so to speak.
“What have you and King Steve done,” oh so he wasn’t going easy on you at all, not even a little bit.
Whatever, you had to answer this truthfully sometime, better late than never. You downed the shot before you spoke, Eddie’s eyes widened at this, his heart skipping several beats. “He taught me a few things, like how to kiss. But it’s not what you think, Eddie. It wasn’t that big of a deal, really. Are you satisfied now?”
“What do you mean taught you a few things, what does that even mean? Just kissing? Why did you need a fucking teacher, anyways. Did he con you into that so he could feel you up or something, I mean, fuck. That just sounds like a porno to me, sounds fucking ridiculous to me.” The thought of you and Steve sharing such an intimate moment, made Eddie’s heart ache a bit, but imagining the two of you kissing did give him a semi hard on.
“Ah ah ah, wait your turn. You only get one question at a time, sir. Play by the rules,” you say, Eddie rolls his eyes at you. “Truth, Dare, or Drink, babe?”
Eddie’s heart flutters at the pet name but he keeps a straight face, “Well, since I’m drinking no matter what after listening to that…fuck it, dare me,” Eddie downs his shot and pours himself another, downing that one as well.
“Jesus, you haven’t even heard the dare yet.”
“I needed the first one for sanity, and the second one for bravery, now dare me!” Eddie yanks your hair playfully and you swat his arm.
“Ok fine, I dare you to…”
Eddie chants, “please say eat your pussy,” three times with his hands clasped together in prayer and his eyes screwed shut while you think of a dare.
“Take your shirt off,” it wasn’t much but it was the best you could think of under pressure.
“Oh, so you are horny, good to know. Lame dare, but good to know,” Eddie tosses his shirt on the floor and slaps your ass. “I could still eat your pussy though, I don’t need to be dared for that. That’s on the house!”
“Focus, Eddie! Keep your head in the game, this is serious!”
“I’ll have you know I am very serious, now Truth, Dare, or Drink?” Eddie’s eyebrows are raised, prompting you, a whole list of truths and dares already circulating his mind.
“Dare…and drink,” you hold out your glass and Eddie pours you another shot and you toss it down, wincing at the burn, but appreciating the warm feeling that grew in your stomach from the whiskey.
Eddie has something wicked in mind, you could tell by the look on his face,  “I dare you to sit on my face,” Eddie’s staring you down, laying down and making a ‘come here’ motion with his pointer finger.
You take a deep breath and crawl onto his chest and plant a small kiss on his cheek, the way Eddie had his tongue out and wiggled his eyebrows at you made you throb. Thinking about his tongue on your pussy was something you thought about constantly, and now it was finally happening, in the hottest way possible no less. You place yourself on his face, Eddie grips your thighs, pulling you down further so you weren’t hovering.
“Oh fuck,” you moan, hands running through his curls, you pull on his hair when his tongue sucks at your clit. You start grinding on Eddie’s face and he does the unthinkable, HE starts moaning at how you tasted. Eddie squishes your thighs, massaging them, your face is flush and you try not to laugh. He sucked on your clit so hard that it tickled, you throw your hands over your mouth, but not before one giggle escapes. Maybe he won’t notice? Eddie stops and you smooth your skirt down so your can see his face better. Oh god, he fucking noticed. He also noticed you didn’t wear panties underneath your skirt today. He wasn’t about to let those two things go without chastising you about them.
“Hey, what’s so funny, punk,” Eddie questions you, his mouth wet from you.
“It just tickles, that was,” you sigh deeply, “amazing. But don’t get a big ego because I said that,” you point your finger at him and he tries to bite it but you pull it away quickly. “Now, Truth, Dare, or Drink, Eddie?”
“But I wasn’t finished!” Eddie tugs at your skirt and tries to pull you up to his face again, you resist him and scoot into his lap. He sits up, hands propped up behind him and sighs, “you’re driving me crazy again.”
“Too bad, answer the question, pretty boy,” you say and squish his cheeks together. Eddie thinks he’ll die if you call him another pet name, you’re softening the mean Eddie that showed his face not too long ago.
“Are you kidding? Dare me, and make it challenging this time, babe. Shock me,” Eddie tosses back another shot and winces, slamming the shot glass down on his bedside table.
“I dare you to call Steve Harrington and ask him on a date,” you giggle at the utter shock on Eddie’s face at your words.
“Well, you shocked me. But I’m drinking and not at liberty to discuss Stevie for the rest of the night, ok?” Eddie takes the whiskey bottle and takes one big gulp.
“Easy there, tiger,” you say, taking the whiskey bottle away from Eddie before he tries to chug anymore. “I think we’re good on this for tonight, I’m putting this away,” you roll off the bed and stride into the kitchen, placing the whiskey bottle back where Eddie got it, hoping he doesn’t try to argue with you on this one.
“You’re such a killjoy, baby,” Eddie grumbles from behind you, following your every move once again. You turn around to see Eddie admiring you, amused by how responsible and cute you were, the little things showed you cared about him and it made his heart swell. “My sweet little killjoy, my little cocktease, my little brat,” Eddie rattles on, caging you to the counter, arms on either side of you . “Am I going to have to show you how to ease up, ya know, just let me in. I know you want me, baby. Afterall, that’s why you’re wearing this skirt, huh? That’s for me, isn’t it,” Eddie’s face is proud, “I love the lack of panties by the way, easy access. Only for me, right,” Eddie’s in your face now, staring down at your lips and licking his own.
You’re speechless, for once you’re speechless. That was a lot to process, and Eddie was on a roll, you wanted to hear more from that dirty mouth of his.
“Truth or Dare,” Eddie challenges you one last time.
“Dare, definitely dare,” you say, knowing you would’ve done whatever he asked of you right then and there. You were under his spell, you thought, or maybe you just happened to have a soul crushing, heart pounding, crush on your best friend that changed the dynamics of your friendship forever. Probably the ladder, though.
Eddie grabs a handful of your ass and squeezes, “I dare you to hop up on my counter and open those pretty legs for me. Here, I’ll help,” Eddie lifts you up and sets you down on the counter, discarding your shirt you stare at him in awe. You never really thought raw sex appeal was a real thing until you saw Eddie Munson at work, and riled up. He was a sight for sore eyes, that was for sure. Shirtless, tatted, leather pants, the imprint of his hard cock through his pants were very distracting. Eddie opens your legs, insisting you keep your ‘pretty skirt on for him’ winking, unzipping his pants to reveal he also didn’t wear underwear today either. His dick hit his stomach, pre cum staining his newest tattoo of a dragon in red ink. Eddie peels the leather pants off and situates himself between your legs, “you’re being so good for me, doll. I’m really proud of you, nothing smart to say?” Eddie holds his dick in one hand, rubbing it up and down your pussy.
“You look really yummy right now, so no,” you hold his face in your hands gently and crash your lips into his. Eddie slams himself into you with ferocity, no one’s called him yummy before and he thinks he could get used to that, get used to your body as well. You wrap your legs around his torso and moan into his mouth, a moan you didn’t know you had in you, it was so pretty it sounded fake.
Eddie breaks the kiss to suck on your neck, mumbling sweet nothings into your ear, “you’re so pretty, baby. Did I ever tell you that? Oh god, you’re being so good for me tonight I’m going to fuck you so good. Can you touch yourself for me, please? Yeah, rub your clit just like that, you’re perfect.” Eddie’s praises and rough pace was enough to make you see stars alone, your fingers on your clit was sending you over the edge. Overstimulated and a moaning mess, you kiss him with tears falling down your cheeks, Eddie sucks on your tongue and bites your lip, he was overstimulating you on purpose. Knowing much more about women’s desires than any man in Hawkins, only because he was obsessed with women and sex, and learning about the two of them. The female sexual response was something that came naturally to him, he had enough practice to know what drove women crazy, and you were the cherry on top. The one he’d been waiting to spoil with his knowledge, but it was almost downright devilish from your perspective. You’d never fallen apart in front of someone like this, it was new…but a good new.
Pulling away from the kiss Eddie wipes a tear from your eye and cups your cheek, “aw, did I make you cry? I’m so sorry, baby. But I’m not finished yet, do you think you can be a good girl for a little bit longer for me?”
You shake your head yes, fucked out and resting your head on his shoulder, holding his torso while he pounded into you. Eddie gripped your hips and resumed his fast pace for a good ten minutes, kissing your chest, neck, and lips until you felt him come deep inside of you. You could feel his dick twitch as he pulled out of you, “I’m really proud of you, baby,” and sloppily kissed your lips.
“Does my makeup still look good,” you sniffle and wipe under your eyes, laughing at how absurd this all felt. Fucking your best friend felt like a sin, it was something secret that was just for the two of you to share. The feelings you two shared only made it worse, made you feel more guilty, and scared the friendship would never be the same. That worry never leaving your mind most days, but right now you didn’t care, this wrong felt so right.
“Don’t worry about it, you look yummy,” Eddie smirks and pulls you in for another kiss.
Before you knew it, it was finally Tuesday, the day of Eddie’s show and you were sitting at the bar watching his set, he was wearing those fucking leather pants again. Eddie kept glancing over at you, not being able to help himself. You were wearing a flattering red dress adorned with red lipstick, he admired the bold choice, and you admired his. The Pants were definitely something you could consider your weakness now, something that would always make you think of how your best friend seduced you again, and how you were starting to care less any time you saw him mouth something to you from the stage between songs. Eddie mouthed the words ‘hey, killjoy’ and ‘yummy,’ and winked every time he caught you staring at him with your mouth open. Watching him play was fucking mesmerizing.
When the show ended Eddie sauntered over to you, resting his elbow on the counter and leaning into your personal space, “did you like it?” He was ecstatic you went to one of his shows, cheering him on silently from a pretty decent size bar crowd he had managed to gain over time. They were a town favorite, Corroded Coffin was one good show away from a state tour, and Eddie was proud of that.
“I loved it, the guitar player was pretty cute too, and the singer…,” you smile up at his face that was glistening with sweat.
“Hey, I happen to be both of those guys. What are the odds, wanna have a private show in about an hour? VIP only!”
“Isn’t it inappropriate to take advantage of your fans,” you tease him.
“I think it would be inappropriate to not take advantage of how killer you look tonight, doll face. See you in an hour,” Eddie grins, stealing your beer, then smooching your cheek quickly and hugging you to him with affection. Sticking his tongue out at you, he jogged away to pack up his equipment with the rest of the guys.
Your mouth dropped, not caring if anyone saw, because still it could’ve easily been seen as regular Eddie behavior from an outside view. But you knew better, you knew right then and there you were head over heels in love with your best friend Eddie Munson.

Just look my way is such a bizarre song. The official version keeps on like “I’m sad that I have to let you go, but why don’t you love meeeeee, also i’m going to improve as a person so love meeeeeeee”
Also remembering that this song is attached to this raunchy comedy series makes it so funny, this extremely emotional song is dedicated to a man who says shit like:
“If you try a stunt like that again I will fuck you and your wife”
“I challenge you to a fucking… challenge! Fuck I said that twice.”
“You know that bridge over the freeway? Shit off it!”
“I am not above hitting a female in front of her daddy”
“Don’t let her access any of your holes”
And also shoots children. Is Stolas okay with shooting kids? The show really wants you to think he’s super nice actually, so I imagine the answer is no.

Hi again xx
It’s five in the morning and you know what that means! I’ve been thinking about things while trying to SLEEP grah! I wish Insomnia was a thing I could grab by the throat and strangle. Anyways..
Helluva Boss makes me angry for a whole lot of reasons. The top reason, though, is that I actually kind of liked the idea behind it.
Look, I’m a sucker for a good comedy. Demons who get paid to go to Earth and assassinate other demon’s enemies? Now that’s right up my alley—damn, that’s probably a plot I would’ve come up with for one of my stories/roleplays.
But, Helluva Boss completely lost the plot. It’s become this rancid, poorly told ‘love story’. The characters have personalities that switch from episode to episode (or no personalities at all), the main ‘love interests’ are horribly problematic for a plethora of reasons, not to mention—the main plot (demon assassins) has BARELY been utilized.
This show gets such high praise but all it is, is a mashup of raunchy sex jokes, incest and sa jokes/plotlines, trauma that never gets mentioned again, and cussing that doesn’t add anything.
And before ANYONE goes ‘oh you’re just sensitive’—I’m an avid watcher and fan of South Park and The Boys, two shows that have characters who cuss like a storm, have trauma mentioned, and have raunchy sex jokes. The thing is, they’re utilized right. They’re done right and well. They’re FUNNY.
South Park has brilliant comedic timing and The Boys knows how to keep the plot. Helluva Boss is just—there.
It’s sad because it could’ve been something really good! RIP to the former plot of Helluva Boss—forever in my heart as something that actually peaked my interest.
(Also save female characters from Vivziepop, she has NO clue how to write them!! Justice for the girls 💪🏽)

Just watched Joy Ride (2023) and mixed thoughts.
Spoilers below!!
It was really, really refreshing to see East Asian women being portrayed as unapologetically raunchy and messy and terrible and fucked up. It's the first time I've seen a movie where they're NOT some out together socialite or kung fu badass or a fetishized dragon lady or delicate lotus flower. The characterization was well done and I felt like they were fleshed out pretty well, and it was a very sex-positive portrayal of East Asian women and it was done ENTIRELY without fetishizing them. It's a low bar to pass and the fact that this is the first movie I've seen that passes this bar is... depressing but it was very nice to see that they can be trashy and sexy and just be themselves.
It's the typical sort of humour you'd expect from an R-rated comedy. Not my sort of thing entirely, but I had some laughs for sure and some other reviewers thought it was hilarious.
I could tell that the film was indeed made by diaspora for diaspora. There were just so many little details sprinkled through the whole thing that I could recognize from lived experience
While the film certainly made some commentary on internalized racism, I felt like it never really followed through with exploring this theme, or that when it did, it was somewhat superficial and did not really fully address it. Same goes for exploring the theme of being in-between - something that's very, very central to diaspora - as well as the identity crisis evoked by a twist I admit I was surprised by. All of these, while they had the potential to be weaved more strongly into the film, were not really fully addressed - and while this is a comedy movie, the way that all these themes were set up as serious things to address led to a rather mediocre reaction to its execution.
The female gaze is generally very, very, very present for this film, which is once again rare to see in R-rated comedies with nudity and sex. None of the four friends are ever objectified as sex objects, and anything sexual is something they choose for their own pleasure. It's a very sex-positive take, again.
Sprinkles of queer Asian experience in there too, which is nice to see. I found Deadeye to be a very compelling character as I can relate to them in several levels, and it was really really nice to see queer Asians who can be awkward, be raunchy, be terrible, be unapologetic, a d just be human.
Plot was a typical comedy plot, so not revolutionary at all and with some plot holes, but it's a plot.
One more point under the cut with bigger spoilers but also CW: Mentions of SA.
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5 - 7/10. Not great, not bad. Could've been better. Some weird spots. But it sure is something, and I'm glad to see more Asian American rep all across different genres.
One of the biggest scenes that made me feel off was a scene where Stephanie Hsu's character, Kat, has a bag of coke up her ass, and it breaks. She freaks out because she feels it entering her system and it makes her, as she says, "very horny." At this point, she and the three others are in a hotel with a bunch of hot athletic Asian men who are friends with one of the MCs. One of the men, who's also Kat's ex, tries to hit on her and hook up with her, but she tries to reject him - she also tells him that she's engaged, which he is. He does not back off and he does not take her seriously. She runs off (to the gym). He follows.
While he definitely thinks she's sober (he has no idea she's on drugs), the rest of the gals, FULLY AWARE that Kat is completely drugged out of her mind and being hit on by someone she does not want to be with, decide to go their separate ways while wishing everyone a good time and to "have fun tonight". Nobody checks on Kat.
At that point in the film I was beginning to get extremely worried that they were going to play off a date rape-esque scenario as a humorous, joking one given how the entire tone of this scene was a humorous one.
At the end, they do not have sex, thank God.
The scene between them is indeed sexually charged. What happens is that she pulls a muscle when trying to work off the energy, and he uses a muscle blaster/massage gun on her back. He does not touch her without her asking him to, but she is still under the influence of drugs (which he doesn't know...but still...). She then grabs a basketball and puts it between her thighs, and he uses the massage gun on the basketball. Afterwards, she takes the gun and uses it on his balls, and apparently shatters his pelvis. Wow
This is never addressed afterwards, ever. The scene left me feeling rather confused and more uncomfortable than anything else in the entire movie. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but something about it was clanging bells in my head.

Bottoms was great!
I think a few characters and arcs were a little undercooked, but for a rather new director and for what it was, a campy teenage romcom that harkens back to the crazy camp of the 80s/90s, it did a very good job and it was Gay with a capital G, extremely overt from the very first line, this movie passes the Bechdel test by instantly having their two main named female characters talk about fucking hot chicks in true raunchy 80s teen romcom about losers banging cheerleaders fashion, so I'm always gonna give movies led by women and gays more leeway to be bad than any other kind of movie
The chemistry between the cast is wonderful and brilliant and their comedic timing together is beyond fantastic, the work being done between Ayo and Rachel is exceptional to watch, they lead the movie and carry it on their shoulders and they wear the titles of main characters extremely well
During my showing me and one other overtly gay guy were cackle laughing at the jokes and half the time we were feeding into each others reactions
Go see this movie for a fun campy gay time and be prepared to wonder why every raunchy teen comedy following nerdy boys trying to get with cheer leaders isn't about nerdy lesbians trying to get with cheer leaders instead ✌️

Movie Review | Superbad (Mottola, 2007)
Tumblr media
This actually came out when I was in high school and was a pretty big hit, so the ideal time to have watched this would probably have been then. But in part because I wasn't going to the movies regularly at the time, in part because I didn't (and still probably don't) have much affection for the overarching comedic sensibilities of the era, and in part because this is one of those movies that some of the more annoying people I knew adopted as their personality, I didn't get around to it. But as I've seen two of Greg Mottola's movies over the past few days, I figured now would be as good a time as any to close this blind spot. It was unlikely I would ever again be in the same Mottola Movie Mood.
Now, this will be a shock to nobody except me, but given that I'm so so at best on a lot of beloved comedies from the era, I actually enjoyed this. Speaking from experience, this movie fundamentally understands the angst of being a loser in high school. It understands that losers don't want to be losers but are maybe a little more attached to their identities than they realize. It understands that there are different tiers of losers, and the losers in the higher tiers, perhaps due to their insecurities, will look down on the losers in the lower tiers, but are still closer to each other than with the rest of the population. And it understands that when you've internalized being a loser for a certain amount of time, it can be hard to read signals from those outside your social strata. The particulars of my exact experience are different (quite frankly, these guys are smoother than I was; McLovin at least told the girl what time it was, I would have just avoided eye contact and walked away without saying anything), but the overall sentiment rings true.
And most refreshingly, the movie is surprisingly gentle. The friendship between the heroes is well realized and acted with a certain amount of texture. The movie does not hold its female characters in contempt, and actually fleshes them out as individuals to the extent possible when filtered through the heroes' perspectives. There's a buildup near the end when one of the heroes prepares to hook up with the girl he desires that leads you to expect a cruel pull of the rug, but to the movie's credit, it does not play things that way. The results are raunchy but not mean-spirited. And most surprisingly, for a movie that came out before #MeToo, it's surprisingly sensitive around matters of consent.
You can compare this to something like Revenge of the Nerds, which is probably the '80s equivalent of something like this. Both movies have arguably lovable nerds, but the earlier movie frames the proceedings through a snobs vs slobs conflict and paints clear enemies, while this presents a story of introspection and self growth without many overt villains. And more importantly, the earlier movie is more cavalier about violating consent and has you root for its heroes as they commit straight up sex crimes. This one realizes that sex crimes are bad. That said, I must confess I enjoy the earlier movie more, in part because of the better rounded cast, in part because of the musical number, and in part because I prefer '80s boner comedy sheen to 2000s boner comedy sheen. So I'm afraid I'm on the wrong side of history with this one.
Anyway, I remember people had McLovin fever when this came out, and even I admitted that the bits in the trailer were pretty funny. But seeing the movie now, the extent to which he's transparently pushed as a breakout character felt a little clumsy. And while Mottola in general likes to structure his movies around detours from what I've been seeing, I think the scenes with McLovin and the cops grind the movie to a halt. The rest of the movie has moments of exaggeration (one of the heroes getting into a fight with Kevin Corrigan thanks to an incriminating menstrual bloodstain on their pants), but these scenes totally break the reality of the movie and feel like something out an SNL sketch. They are not free of laughs, but feel much too broad for the overall tone of the movie.

What are your tastes in media? (Music/TV/Film/Books)
Sorry for the late reply!
When it comes to TV/Film/Books (…any storytelling type of media in general) I really like a combination of horror/thriller and comedy. Especially dry humor, but not necessarily. I love a lot of raunchy and stupid stuff too. My favourite shows are probably South Park (rewatched this one 1000 times) and Parks and Rec (we don’t watch a lot of live-action (???) series though, and it’s been a while since we watched this one). Of course, these two aren’t really horrors/thrillers lol, but a good example of a thriller show that I love would be Hannibal. This one we also rewatched 100000 times, it’s honestly perfect: the story, the aesthetics, the gore, and of course of course the relationship between Hannibal and Will.
I wanted to say that I don’t really love stories that focus on romance, but then again, one of my favourite movies is Heathers, so I guess based on this + my love for Hannibal one might say that I do love romance, but a very specific type of it lol
In general, I tend to especially enjoy the ones that have a strong visual style and aesthetic, like The Shining, Parasite, Midsommar, Suspiria and stuff. But I don’t only watch horrors; Katsu (who is also a person that introduced me to horror in the first place) recommends me a lot of very good films.
I don’t read books very often (oof), but out of everything I’ve read over the past couple of years, the things that I liked the most were “Misery” (by King) and Lord of the Flies.
When it comes to music, I guess I don’t even listen to it very often either. I love soundtracks, I love anime music and vocaloid music (mostly old tracks that I’ve been listening to for years), sometimes I listen to stuff from musicals. One of my favourite bands, Sound Horizon, pretty much tells stories with their music, and I really love them for both this and their sound in general. Well, and of course things that Katsu and my friends send to me.
Hmm… I guess I love strong female vocals. I still love Evanescence very much + love Ado’s songs a lot.
I won’t talk much about my favourite anime and manga (I actually have written posts about it before; they are a bit old though), but I’ll say that a lot of things that we love is either seinen or some kind of BL-ish comedy lol
To help myself with this reply, I opened both MAL (for anime and manga, duh) and Letterboxd accounts, although my ratings there are a little bit over the place, so I couldn’t trust them...
There are moments when we watch or read something that is super out of our comport zone, and it’s usually a pretty interesting and refreshing experience, so even though all of my answers were pretty much “YES DARK STUFF TEEHEEHEE”, I’m not opposed to other stuff. I guess the most ultimate important thing that could make me love any type of media (as long as I have time to dive into it) would be the unapologetic self-indulgence that the author has for their work. Somehow it’s very easy to sense when you watch or read something. I really love experiencing media and just know that the author is having fun. I love passion projects where you can clearly see it is one for the author.
But this sounds a bit cheesy, I know lol

Joy Ride: Review
Crazy Hitch-hiking Asians
Tumblr media
While comedies like Bridesmaids and Girls Trip have showcased the hilarity of female friendships, major studios have shied away from films about Asian girls just having fun. But, doing for raunchy comedies what Crazy Rich Asians did for rom-coms, Joy Ride is here to give the genre a much-needed shake up. Delivering a ton of riotous laughs at breakneck pace, this is one of the funniest films in years.
From first-time director Adele Lim (part of the writing team on Crazy Rich Asians), Joy Ride is tied together by a moving study of identity and friendships. We follow Audrey (Ashley Park), an uptight career woman who was adopted by an American family, and never met her birth mother. Learning how to blend in in a dominantly white neighbourhood, she met best friend Lolo (Sherry Cola), a slacker who protected her from racist bullies, and now specialises in body positive art installations (a lot of penises). When a big work opportunity presents itself for Audrey in Beijing, Lolo convinces her to hit two birds with one stone and meet the woman who gave her up for adoption.
The journey takes a while to get going, as the two friends pick up Audrey’s college roommate Kat (Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Stephanie Hsu), a saintly actress with a wild past, and Lolo’s cousin ‘Deadeye’ (Sabrine Wu), a strange but endearing K-pop stan. But as with all joy rides, things don’t go entirely to plan. And after a run-in with a troublesome drug-dealer, this trip takes a turn for the chaotic.
Written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao, this keeps the laughs coming at a pace that’s almost hard to keep up with. You may think you’ve seen every scene of friends accidentally taking drugs in cinema, but you’ve not seen anything quite like this. The standout set piece is a mind-blowing sex montage featuring a Chinese basketball team, which brings plenty of tension, lust and repressed feelings to the surface. There’s also a hilarious K-Pop rendition of Cardi B’s ‘WAP’, which reaches a shocking climax the likes of which you rarely see in cinema.
Joy Ride might go to some crazy places with its comedy, but there’s still plenty of heart amid the chaos. While you can see the third-act complications from a mile away, Lim keeps things fresh with plenty of surprises and a dedicated cast that bicker and bond like real life friends. Everyone gets a moment to shine, though Sabrine Wu’s oddball performance threatens to steal many a scene. The result is a study of female friendships that feels sincere and true to life, as well as an affecting story about belonging that will have you reaching for the tissues. Fast, lean and full of freewheeling energy, this is not a ride you’ll forget in a hurry.
With first-time director Adele Lim at the wheel, Joy Ride manages to be both an outrageously funny comedy and a touching portrayal of female friendships.

Siyaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
Hoe are you doing???!?!!????
I just reread the strip lawyer and omggg your mind!!!!!!! Lemme kisss OMGGGGGGGG LIKE HOW CAN YOU WRITE SOMETHING SO DELICIOUS I CAN DIEE REREADING TAHT FOREVER!!!!!!!!!
On that note can you give me a peak , or perhaps just warning tags, of any of your wips with other sexy ass smut please?????? I just want to know what you're thinking next cause ksurjekssllsworbkeslslslsllslsls every time i read your fics my brain is like omg what was she thinking 🧐😯🧐
Thank you and i really hope you have a blessed day today for making me so giiddy this early in the morning.
P.s. pls tell me where you read manga and watch anime and some spicy and sweet recommendations please.
I love comedy and I have never watched anime. I don't like action though. Just something lighthearted (and a bit raunchy if possible) to keep me entertained hehe.
AAAAHHHHH IVVYYY I can't believe you could reread a fic of mine and still find it enjoyable, that is the biggest compliment, thank you so muuuccchhhh 🥺🥺🥺🥺 <3
WIP... I have only two at the moment... one is stigma... that has been going on for 2 years now (insert a pic of mine completely ashamed of myself) - that doesn't really have much smut, and there is more of a plot in that. Hence, the porn monster in me is having difficulty finishing it ehehehe 🐥 another one is a part of keynote! i have some ideas, im still thinking it through, but THAT will be smut galoorreeee! i want them to try new things, i want hoseok to push his own boundaries along with yn's, so that will be fun to write :3 I'm so happy you're looking forward to them, I will drop snippets when I get time to write them eheheh <3 Thank you so much for making my weekend with your kind wordsss 💓
So manga, I usually use https://mangatoto.net/, I find most of the ones I read over there. Anime I usually just go to Netflix and watch whatever is there, but you can also use gogoanime to watch whatever you want!
Comedy and raunchy... I will drop the manga's I've read recently, they should fit your taste ehehehe they're mostly erotica + cute romcom!
DISCLAIMER: A lot of manga get discontinued often, so I can't guarantee these are all completed!
Oshiete Kudasai Fujishima-san - this is GOOD. Consent is great, the male lead is hot, the sex is actually really good and not the same scene repeated 50 times! But... the female lead... this one comment sums it up:
Tumblr media
(Rio being the female lead) But I still recommend it!
2. Hapi Mari - This one is really nice! I like the character dynamics, it is not super explicit but the characters are sketched out pretty well. Slightly dumber female lead, but its not as bad as the previous one!
3. Osananajimi Bartender to Hajimeru Kaikan Lesson - short I think, the art style is not to my liking. But the characters are so nice, and the side characters are sweet! And they have this 'cocktail language' that is very cutely used hehe, good read! And CONSENT!!!
4. Tada no Renai nanka de Kikkonai: Kojirase Joushi to Fetish na Buka (We Can't Do Just Plain Love: She's Got a Fetish, Her Boss Has Low Self-Esteem) - The title is pretty funny lmaoooo and I love this manga the most of them all!! This female lead is TO DIE FOR. The concept of this manga is really fun, so this is honestly such a hidden gem. I highly recommend this.
5. Talk To Me - this is actually a manhwa, so the art style takes some time to get used to. Also a little slow, not much happens each chapter, but its a very cute light-hearted read, smexy smexy though! The 2 couples are written very well, so I am currently enjoying this quite a bit ehehe
As for anime, my recommendation of Kaichou Wa Maid Sama still stands!! It's a good anime, and the manga left me in tears <3 Other than that, here are some of my favs that fit your taste (none of these are erotica like the mangas, but they're still very funny):
The Disastrous Life Of Saiki Kusuo (deadpan humour, love it)
Gintama (this is my fav anime of all time, but it has fighting in it as well)
Great Teacher Onizuka
The Way of the Househusband
Ouran High School Host Club (!!!)
Food Wars (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Monthly Girls' Nozaki Kun (so so cute and funny)
Haven't you heard? I'm Sakamoto
Wotakoi (extremely cute and very light hearted, office romance)
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (!!!!!)
*deep breath* That is all from me LOOLLL I'm sorry I laid out a huge ass list but I was too excited to talk about my recs. I hope you enjoy them, please tell me what you think of them once you read/watch them!! Thank you once again for sending me this sweet ask <3

No Hard Feelings (dir. Gene Stupnitsky).
There is a single scene so audaciously raunchy and surprising it's worth the price of admission alone in its brave hilarity. It's hard to recall a female movie star of the calibre and talent of Jennifer Lawrence (also a producer) doing so much for the sake of being funny in another contemporary sex comedy. A throwback to juvenile '90s young adult comedies, [it] also packs the expected amount of heart while referencing contemporary themes of inclusion, gentrification, inequality, and gender politics.

The Sex Lives of College Girls still prefers spectacle over substance
So, the Sex Lives of College Girls premiere episodes were okay. Nothing problematic, nothing impressive either. It still feels like something is missing. There’s not much of an overarching plot to tie events together and give it a sense of momentum, but it’s not episodic enough for each episode to have a coherent narrative purpose or resolution. Granted these are 2 episodes out of 10, but this was an issue I had last season as well. The episodes are feel less like a cohesive story and more like a collection of short, quippy scenes with the same pop music and wide shots of campus transitions 8 times in a row. It’s very flashy, but it feels more designed to keep us engaged with flashy editing rather than substantive storytelling.
As for the substance, the storylines they’ve set up for this season are fine so far but still feel like they’re missing an emotional depth. Part of this for me is the setting. As it was pointed out in the first five minutes, these characters (other than Kimberly) are extremely rich. That makes Kimberly’s storyline the closest thing to relatable so far, because they all feel so far removed from society that it’s hard to care at all about any day to day obstacles they encounter. That’s unfortunately a result of where the writers decided to set the show, so that might just be a permanent roadblock to my personal investment. Ymmv, that’s fine. But because of that, the big obstacle to the girl’s happiness that these episodes presents is that they...can’t party, and they’re sad about that. That just isn’t compelling for me.
There’s also the characters themselves, which I haven’t been able to connect with at all. The only characters that feel real are Eric and Canan, and for a show with four female leads that seems like a failure of writing. They’re the core of the show, but they still just feel like outlines of characters and not real people. More importantly, they barely feel like friends. They spend a lot of screentime together, but the way the show is paced and written hasn’t allowed them time to slow down and connect with each other. Aside from Kimberly and Leighton it doesn’t feel like they’ve bonded or grown together as a group. They just feel like four roommates who jump from set piece to set piece together. Which isn’t inherently a problem, but without an emotional underpinning that’s all it is, surface level spectacle and popcorn raunch.
The other thing that feels surface level is the way the show approaches “wokeness.” I hate that word because it’s blunt and diminutive of the wider progressive movement, but unfortunately that’s what the show has presented so far. Last season saw some actively harmful treatment of the queer community; the pick-me-gay girlfriend and the way the other girls at the women’s center were treated in-narrative as punchlines was part of a larger, worrisome pattern in how Hollywood has tried to present woke (specifically queer) characters. The show feels like a centrist’s vision of progressive. There’s constant dialogue that beats us over the head with the fact that THIS SHOW IS WOKE, but very little substance to actually back that claim up. Nothing in these premiere episodes felt actively harmful like season one, but with things like the same AOC joke Hollywood has been running for the last 5 years it doesn’t have anything new to say either. They’re trying to reclaim sex positivity, but the way the show revolves around it as if nothing else matters ends up feeling self defeating. In trying to reclaim the raunchy comedies that the guys have had for decades, it ends up feeling like we’re looking through the same lens just with a different presenter. The dialogue and presentation of the show spends too much time defining itself against the patriarchy, rather than leaving it behind and just telling its own story.
And that might be a feature, not a bug, and I’m just looking for something that this show doesn’t intend on offering. But it has the potential to be more, and it’s just frustrating seeing that go unfulfilled.
and thanks to @the-bensolos for their help on this post!

Spidey, Sony, Etc.
Tumblr media
The numbers are in.
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE opened with a truly spectacular $120m. This makes it one of the biggest domestic opening weekends for an animated feature in North America, only behind... CGI LION KING ($191m), INCREDIBLES 2 ($182m), SUPER MARIO BROS. ($146m), FINDING DORY ($135m), FROZEN II ($130m), SHREK THE THIRD ($122m), and TOY STORY 4 ($120.9m).
That's also $85m more than what INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE opened with. Like I said in an earlier post, this joins the leagues of films like TERMINATOR 2, AUSTIN POWERS 2, SHREK 2, INCREDIBLES 2, and a few others... Where the original did either well enough or was a small sleeper hit, and the sequel just straight up exploded. Really shows what kind of staying power the first film had after its initial run... And I knew it way back when, too, because the first SPIDER-VERSE had incredible legs. It wall-crawled its way to $190m domestic off of that okay $35m opening, a rare 5x multiplier! I predicted around $90m for the opening weekend at the end of this past year, but I'm happy to be way off on that...
So... Sony Pictures Animation has a few films laid out, some of which are theatrical, some of them aren't (such as K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS, which is being directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans). SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE is the only movie with a concrete release date, which is currently March 29, 2024.
In the works are the aforementioned DEMON HUNTERS, a SPIDER-VERSE movie lead by female characters, along with a 2D Genndy Tartakovsky-directed raunchy dog comedy called FIXED, an animated GHOSTBUSTERS movie that's reportedly circling 2025, an adaptation of the graphic novel BUBBLE, TUT from HAIR LOVE director Matthew A. Cherry, TAO from director Emily Dean, and another Tartakovsky project called BLACK KNIGHT.
FIXED seems to be far along, if not done, and its first look will be given at Annecy in a matter of days. I'm hoping we get a release date for this picture, and a few others, but at this point, it looks like FIXED will be hitting theaters some time next year. Tartakovsky told a fan on his Instagram that FIXED was aiming for theaters, instead of being a streamer title. K-POP, on the other hand, is a streamer title - which kind of bums me out. The premise sounds so cool and fun, and because it's a post-SPIDER-VERSE Sony Animation movie... I think we'll be in for something really unique and dynamic.
Sony Animation also gave us the Lord and Miller-produced THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, a real visual blast and a fun ride from top to bottom, a film that would've looked fantastic on a big screen, but couldn't go there because we were still in the early years of the pandemic. Release it now, and it'd maybe have a chance of making a suitable enough gross. There was also VIVO, WISH DRAGON, and the fourth HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA... SPIDER-VERSE Deux would've shared last year with HOTEL, but it was so gargantuan that it had to move almost a year away... I'm glad they took their time, given what I witnessed this past Friday afternoon.
And it all made sense, really... I was wondering why Sony Animation were so mum on when their future movies were coming out. I was like, "FIXED looks done! Or close to done? Why no date?" ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, and its followup, were such Herculean efforts. We're hearing more and more about what kind of technical and artistic wizardry real went into this movie, such as the multiple framerates on one single character (Spider-Punk)... It's like, yeah, no wonder... They seemed like all hands on deck movies, and that everything else needed to be put aside for a brief second.
FIXED is an exception, though, as that is/was being animated at Renegade Animation. Some Sony Animation movies aren't done at the Sony Imageworks unit in Vancouver, sometimes other venues work on those movies. WISH DRAGON was a Chinese co-production with a number of studios, and THE STAR was done up at Cinesite. To name a few examples...
Maybe come next week, we'll hear what's up with FIXED and K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS. Keep in mind, Sony Animation also launched a TV series with AGENT KING a little while ago, and YOUNG LOVE - based on HAIR LOVE - is around the corner. The plate is full.
So... Congrats SPIDER-VERSE Two! Makes me wonder how much higher BEYOND will open. Given the various dismayed reactions to the film being over, as opposed to *what happened* in the final 10 minutes, I think it has a chance to get an ENDGAME-style bump. Sometimes, when a sequel opens so big, the third one kinda dips a little... I don't think that will be the case with BEYOND... It could even challenge CGI LION KING for the top opening weekend gross for an animated movie... I'd love to see it.
Also quite neat that the two biggest openings of 2023 are animated movies... MARIO with $146m, and now this with $120m... Right behind is MCU entry GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 with $118m. Which also has a lot of animated characters and animated VFX in it. With the strong reception it has, I can see this easily getting a 3-3.5x multiplier, and making its way to $400m domestic, and perhaps double that worldwide... With that, it would become Sony Animation's highest grossing production, dethroning the live-action/animated SMURFS movie that made around $563m back in 2011. Surreal to think that that film has remained their biggest picture, but if we're going to go with all-animated movies... HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 would be tops with $528m worldwide.
Most importantly, it's quite beloved already, a film that has blown minds. INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE caught the world by surprise, and this animated Spider-Man movie eventually won a lot of hearts over, hence this opening so big. Like I said before, I feel this is a watershed moment for animated features...
Not dissimilar to how plenty of adult audiences showed up in droves for the early run of Disney Renaissance animated movies. Or how Pixar and early DreamWorks/PDI films scored huge numbers circa the late '90s/early '00s. Or how we saw more blockbuster heavies in the 2010s like TOY STORY 3, FROZEN, and INSIDE OUT. It continues to prove that a lot of the public likes animation quite a bit, and will shell out hard-earned money to see these films in theaters. I know people will say "But it's still Spider-Man, it's Marvel, it's a well-known IP." Yes, that's correct... But plenty of adults could've said "What? Why is there a Spider-Man CARTOON now?" I feel INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE had a lot to prove, and it did, hence those excellent legs. Anyways, yeah, adults show up to cartoons...
Too bad the heads who don't pay the filmmakers, or those who run prestigious centers celebrating film... don't give the medium much respect, can't or absolutely refuse see that...
But the public says otherwise, and that's what matters to me. The popular vote vs. a very biased electoral college.

I don't have the bandwidth right now to get into it, especially because I know there ARE differences in the two films and their ~appeal, but if y'all were half as sincere about ~wanting to see bright and fun stories about women~ as you say you are to justify Barbie being promo'd this obnoxiously, you would be promoting Joy Ride.
Obviously, a raunchy comedy isn't going to be for everyone, but it IS a movie very much about the trauma of a entering adulthood and leaving behind "girlhood" (like the barbie movie), it is about fan culture and does tap into that (like the barbie movie), it is about female friendship and the power of teamwork between an unlikely gaggle of women (like the barbie movie). It's also about a lot of other things (women wanting to fuck, being nonbinary and neurodivergent and being isolated, the effects of transracial adoption and being alienated from your own culture, racism in general, AND MORE!). It is a comedy that has something to say.
It has a current hollywood darling in it (Stephanie Hsu), who honestly has done more for us than Margot ever has.
I won't say liking the Barbie movie is wrong (although the BLATANT and overwhelming consumerism and BUY THESE PINK ITEMS of it all is... exhausting) but like... some energy for Joy Ride would be nice. In many ways, it's a groundbreaking film, in many ways... it's not (it's a very comfortable, familiar narrative and has some of hte same issues many films in that space have).
But it's just weird trying to sort of promote Barbie as this like... progressive move while completely abandoning films like Joy Ride. Especially when Barbie doesn't need anyone's promo but Joy Ride very much does.
