Richard Chizmar (Gwendy's Button Box, Chasing the Boogeyman) will publish Memorials in hardcover and e-book on October 22 via Gallery Books.
Set in 1983, the 448-page horror novel involves a group of students who encounter a supernatural terror while on a road trip through Appalachia. Read on for the full synopsis.
1983: Three students from a small college embark on a week-long road trip to film a documentary on roadside memorials for their American Studies class. The project starts out as a fun adventure with long stretches of empty road and nightly campfires where they begin to open up with one another. But as they venture deeper into the Appalachian backwoods, the atmosphere begins to darken. They notice more and more of the memorials feature a strange, unsettling symbol hinting at a sinister secret. Paranoia sets in when it appears they are being followed. Their vehicle is tampered with overnight and some of the locals appear to be anything but welcoming. Before long, the students can’t help but wonder if these roadside deaths were really random accidents…or is something terrifying at work here?
Pre-order Memorials by Richard Chizmar.

finally got access to chasing the boogeyman by richard chizmar! i put it on hold at the library ages ago, but the waiting list was ridiculous. i'm closing in on the halfway point + really enjoying the framing used in the story.
i have a sort of love/hate relationship with true crime. on one hand, i've always been fascinated by the investigation + learning about how serial killers are caught, but it's also incredibly depressing to hear the details of these victims who had their lives ripped from them. i also don't like the weird worship of these serial killers that other fans of true crime often fall into.
so far this book is scratching the itch of getting what feels like a nonfiction story, but it (probably) won't emotionally destroy me since it's fictional. the photos are a really cool touch that add a sense of reality to the story tho!
i've got some theories cooking in my noggin + i'm excited to see if i'm actually onto something or completely out of my mind. lol

Please don’t judge me, here’s where I start being accused of not being a hardcore SK fan but I’ve only read the first Gwendy book so I’m gunna dive in and read the trilogy!
I hate how these books don’t match, urgh.

5 SECOND REVIEW
Tumblr media
* very interesting concept - a fictional account written in the style of a nonfiction, true crime book
* it feels very meta at times because of this, but in a good way
* i loved the writing and especially the setting
* i'm a big fan of books set in small towns or communities, i feel like this is where the biggest secrets are hidden, and if handled correctly, make for phenomenal storytelling
* i read this in one sitting, practically
* and while i think there's enough true true crime out there, and adding fictional true crime to it may be unnecessary, i genuinely had a blast reading this
* 4/5⭐️

I just finished Gwendy's Final Task and like... the implications that there is still a Pennywise presence in Derry as late as 2019?? Or are all those later instances just remnants of what once was?? Gwendy mentions the town is known for its high rates of missing children and disaster flooding. Did the town never lose that reputation even after 30+ years of what I must assume is fewer additional child murders or do Derry kids keep getting snatched since literally no one there seems to give a shit about anything?

Becoming the Boogeyman
Becoming the Boogeyman is the sequel to Richard Chizmar’s “fake true crime novel” Chasing the Boogeyman. I stumbled across this book in January 2022 and ever since then I have recommended it on all my platforms and frequently discussed it for its fresh take on a thriller novel: the story takes inspiration from Chizmar’s real childhood town and memories, including friends and family and several…

Book Review: Gwendy's Final Task (The Button Box #3)
Hello Readers! I hope you’re enjoying your short week from Memorial Day. Things are just plugging along for me, so I don’t have much of a personal update for now. That being said, it’s time for another book review! This time I concluded my read of the Button Box series with Gwendy’s Final Task (The Button Box #3) by Stephen King & Richard Chizmar. Though the second book wasn’t as good as the…

i just realized i never got around to checking in about chasing the boogeyman. i finished it a couple weeks back + ended up feeling very meh about it.
i was really into the vibe of a fictional story written like a true crime book at first, but there were a lot of slice of life stuff involving the author that i felt bogged the story down. it was interesting when it was being used to introduce the setting + the author, but after a while it started to feel distracting from the serial killer aspect + also got more and more boring to read.
i also felt like the ending was bland. the perpetrator wasn't surprising so it didn't feel like a twist or a particularly shocking reveal. i just kind of felt underwhelmed by the whole thing.

I finished the Gwendy Trilogy and continued the Gwen theme with this release from Paperbacks from Hell…very much a ‘meh’ book if you know what I mean?
Not sure what to read next…feeling something long and cozy for these rainy days…
