idk I've been seeing some people getting upset over Rei being the legends protag so I made a meme:

#Pokemon Masters is it's own thing #but it's not 'canon' to the main games #just like Pokespe's protags aren't canon outside of the manga #with the exception of Red there's no canon protagonists #and Red's only the exception because Leaf didn't exist in game until the remakes + he's the only protag you can fight in other games #I would have preferred Akari but I will be protecting protag Rei with my life #he does not deserve hate just because DeNA assigned him to be based off the player character #he's just as much of a Legends protagonist as Akari is #so unless Akari or Rei appear in a future game #you decide who's 'canon' #and yes there was a even ratio of male and female canon protags prior to Legends #for males there's: Red Ethan Brendan and Hilbert #and for girls there's: Dawn Rosa Serena and Gloria #Then there's Selene and Elio which based off what I could gather could both be Sun and Moon's protagonists? #aka they both share traits of they're in game counterparts #so... 5 males and 5 females before legends #pokemon #pokemon masters #pokemon masters ex #pokemas #Pokemon Rei #Pokemon Akari

I genuinely think that the female protagonists in pokemon have a way better design than the guys, I mean sure sometimes I wished they wore pants or like sweaters just like the guys but I think that's why the girl protags are better in design since they have more variety (I think) when it comes to their design.

pokemon protagonist headcanons <3

these are the protags i default to in fanworks. i dunno how canon this is, but i don’t care. pokemon alternate dimensions make literally everything canon. so i’m just factually correct.

kanto (gen 1 and 3): look. leaf is great. she’s got charm. but come on. red is too much of an icon

johto and kanto (gen 2 and 4): as much as i WANT to say lyra (kris also exists, i guess), it’s ethan. or gold. whichever name you prefer. similarly to red, the female player character did not exist at the time of the original johto games, which makes ethan/gold automatically more likely.

hoenn: may. i just like her better. does pmex contradict me? yes. do i care? no.

sinnoh: dawn. man, lucas just gives me the vibes of a nerd who would be the prof’s assistant. dawn feels more. adventurey. i think this choice was influenced by the anime.

unova (bw1): this is a hard choice. hilda and hilbert are equally just kind of… there. i usually pick hilbert just because. i dunno.

unova (bw2): this, on the other hand? easiest choice in my life. have you ever looked at nate? did you even know his name is nate? can you envision nate? rosa is just better in every way

kalos: another choice influenced by the anime: serena. always. also calem feels like a kalos rival (derogatory)

alola: i have no basis for this but elio.

galar: similarly to rosa, though to a lesser degree, i think gloria is just objectively better.

paldea: i am 100% ambivalent. all the way i don’t even care. i don’t even remember how to spell these guys’ names. floran and julie or w/e. paldea is just one of those regions where you insert oc

My interpretation of Pokémon protagonists (Kalos)

Totally valid if u see them differently btw!! These are just my headcanons :]

-Calem and Serena are childhood friends that grew up in Vanville Town (they used to really hate each other as kids but still spend a lot of time with each other lol)

-they're big gossips but they mean well and are always very polite to other people

-Calem picked Froakie and Serena chose Chespin

-they're 16 (I think that's already their canonical age but I have specific age hcs for all protagonists)

-neither of them are super into collecting gym badges but Serena defeats all the gym leaders to prove a point and Calem has gotten a few badges for fun

-they're both VERY into fashion and constantly have to go to the Battle Chateau because they keep spending all their money on expensive clothing (they're stylish tho)

-Calem's goal is to become a professional video editor and Serena's goal is to open up her own bakery in Lumiose city (she's not very good at making macarons but she's trying her best lmao)

-their relationship is platonic but they'll jump at the opportunity to act like a couple if it benefits them in any way

-Calem is the more quiet one of the two, which he makes up for with his downright brutal remarks to those that bother him

-Serena is more extroverted and can get a bit too overconfident sometimes

-they both act like smug rich bastards but they're actually just teens who don't know what they're doing

-one thing they're equally talented at is rollerblading

-Serena genuinely cannot take Team Flare seriously and bursts out laughing every time they pull up in their fits (Calem tries to be serious about it but is hanging on by a thread)

-I like to think they're very chaotic as travel companions and absolutely cannot navigate, but when push comes to shove they can get serious and focus on taking out Team Flare
